Investigation of the impact of dual inoculations of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria on drought tolerance of maize grown in a compost-amended field under Mediterranean conditions

In the current context of rapid climate change, water scarcity and soil poverty are becoming increasingly alarming, leading to growing losses of 30–50% of global agricultural production. It is imperative to find environmentally-friendly approaches for improving plant tolerance to drastic conditions, particularly in arid and semi-arid Mediterranean regions. Biostimulants based on symbiotic microbes are emerging as effective strategies for improving tolerance and agricultural productivity. This study aims to evaluate the effects of single and double inoculation of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (My) and plant growth-promoting bacteria (Ba) on the growth, physiological and biochemical traits of maize crop grown in compost (Co) amended soil under two irrigation regimes: well-watered (WW: 100% of crop evapotranspiration [ETc]) and drought-stressed (DS: 50% ETc) using drip irrigation system. Reducing irrigation to 50% reduced shoot dry weight (SDW), root dry weight (RDW), 1,000-grains weight (TGW) and grain yield (Y). However, Ba alone increased SDW by 63%, while CoMyBa improved RDW, TGW and Y by 197, 43 and 175%, respectively compared with the control under DS conditions. Dual inoculation boosted root colonization intensity, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), total chlorophyll and leaf area of maize seedlings in compost-amended soil, compared to the controls. The application of Ba significantly reduced hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde by 46%, in maize seedlings grown in compost-amended soil, compared to the controls under DS. Our results indicated that My and Ba significantly boost the ability of maize to tolerate drought by improving water supply and physiology and stimulating the accumulation of organic and inorganic osmolytes, as well as improving the properties of soils such as cation exchange capacity particularly amended by Co. The dual inoculations were the most effective and represent an environmentally-friendly and relatively inexpensive approach to optimizing agricultural production and soil restoration programs in Mediterranean regions.

Mycorrhizas and Trichoderma fungi increase the accumulation of secondary metabolites in grain legume leaves and suppress foliar diseases in field-grown conditions of the humid forest of Cameroon

BackgroundArbuscular mycorrhizal and Trichoderma fungi alter the synthesis of secondary metabolites of plants and confer tolerance from pathogens attacks. However, there is less supportive evidence from on-field studies confirming the above-mentioned hypothesis, particularly for the humid forest zone of Cameroon where pathogens are important sources of yield losses for legumes such as soybean and common bean.Materials and methodsWe evaluated the impacts of mycorrhiza isolates of Rhizophagus intraradices (Ri) and Trichoderma asperellum (Ta) fungi and their co-inoculations (Ta x Ri) in the synthetizing of leaves secondary metabolites, foliar disease symptoms, growth, N and P uptake, and yields of three genotypes of soybean (TGx 1485-1D, TGx 1990-93 F, and TGx 1990-97 F) and common beans (NUA-99, DOR-701, and PNN) under field conditions of Cameroon.ResultsWe found that common bean plants showed a lower foliar infection rate but a higher increase in root colonization intensity, shoot dry weight, and N and P uptakes than soybeans when inoculated with Ri and Ta treatment. However, the grain yield of soybean soybean was higher (2000 kg ha 1) than the common bean plants for the Ri × Ta treatment. The soybean genotype TGx 1990-93F had increased root colonization intensity and the lowest foliar infection rate, making it stronger and tolerant to pathogen attacks when co-inoculated with Ri × Ta fungi (F). Bean plants inoculated with Ri and the co-inoculated with Ri × Ta demonstrated lower symptoms of foliar attack, and increased root colonization, particularly the PNN variety. The total amino acid and proline accumulations were higher for soybean than common bean plants due to fungi inoculations, and soybean genotypes accumulated more excellent contents of amino acid and proline in the control (10.1 mg g− 1 fwt) that significantly increased under the Ri × Ta inoculation (13.4 mg g− 1 fwt).ConclusionsCommon bean plants inoculated with Ta and Ri fungi accumulated higher phenolic compounds in their leaves that aided them in overcoming the pathogen attacks than soybean plants.

Impact of roots on the hydrogeological properties of silty soil covers

Mine tailings storage poses significant environmental risks such as the formation of acid mine drainage. Engineered covers offer a solution by controlling water ingress. Their performance is based on specific soil hydrogeological properties (SHPs). They must support vegetation which can impact saturated hydraulic conductivity ( ksat) and water retention curve (WRC). This study assesses the impact of 4-year-old willow root colonization on silty soil covers using flexible wall parameters and water retention tests. The obtained SHPs were compared with root traits. The results suggested that the hydrogeological properties of the studied in situ samples were not significantly affected by roots. The variation of measured and predicted ksat values spanned an order of magnitude, regardless of the root colonization intensity, up to a root length density (RLD) of 2.98 cm/cm3. RLD showed a significant and positive linear relationship with measured ksat values ( R2 = 0.54). However, when root colonization was low (RLD < 1 cm/cm3), RLD was negatively correlated with the nvG ( R2 = 0.44) parameter of the van Genuchten WRC model, while the opposite relationship was observed for samples with RLD > 1 cm/cm3 ( R2 = 0.61). Additionally, RLD and the coarse root (diameter > 1 mm) volume to fine root volume (C/F ratio) influenced WRCs. Over time, coarser roots may have a more pronounced impact on SHPs; further research is needed.

Changes in arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal communities, mycorrhizal soil infectivity, and phosphorus availability under Chromolaena odorata (Asteraceae) invasions in a West-African forest-savanna ecotone.

Substantial areas of agricultural lands in Sub-Saharan Africa have been invaded by Chromolaena odorata (Asteraceae), but the consequences for arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi (AMF) remains poorly understood. This study explores changes in diverse AMF community attributes and soil available phosphorus following C. odorata invasion in forest and savanna fragments in Côte d'Ivoire (West Africa). Invaded-forest (COF) and savanna (COS) sites were compared to adjacent natural forest (FOR) and savanna (SAV) fragments, respectively. Physico-chemical variables and AMF spore density parameters were determined for soil samples from 0-20cm depth. An 18S ribosomal RNA metabarcoding analysis of AMF communities was conducted. In addition, cowpea (Vigna unguiculata)was grown on soils collected from these sites under greenhouse conditions for determination of soil mycorrhizal infectivity. Noticeable changes in the composition of AMF communities in C. odorata relative to nearby forest and savanna non-invaded sites were observed. AMF-specific richness in COS (47 species) was lower than that in SAV (57 species) while it was higher in COF (68 species) than in FOR (63 species). COF and COS differed in AMF specific composition (Dissimilarity index = 50.6%). Chromolaena odorata invasions resulted in increased relative abundances of the genera Claroideoglomus and Glomus in COF, a decreased relative abundance of Paraglomus in COS and decreased relative abundances of Ambispora in both COF and COS. Total and healthy spore densities, cowpea root colonization intensity and soil available P were all higher in invaded sites than in natural ecosystems. Remarkably, although these values were different in FOR and SAV, they turned out to be similar in COF and COS (4.6 and 4.2 total spores g-1 soil, 2.3 and 2.0 healthy spores g-1 soil, and 52.6 and 51.6% root colonization, respectively) suggesting a C. odorata-specific effect. These findings indicate that soil mycorrhizal potential and phosphorus availability have improved following C. odorata invasion.

Paired Root-Soil Samples and Metabarcoding Reveal Taxon-Based Colonization Strategies in Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Communities in Japanese Cedar and Cypress Stands.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in the roots and soil surrounding their hosts are typically independently investigated and little is known of the relationships between the communities of the two compartments. We simultaneously collected root and surrounding soil samples from Cryptomeria japonica (Cj) and Chamaecyparis obtusa (Co) at three environmentally different sites. Based on molecular and morphological analyses, we characterized their associated AMF communities. Cj was more densely colonized than Co and that root colonization intensity was significantly correlated with soil AMF diversity. The communities comprised 15 AMF genera dominated by Glomus and Paraglomus and 1443 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) of which 1067 and 1170 were in roots and soil, respectively. AMF communities were significantly different among sites, and the root AMF communities were significantly different from those of soil at each site. The root and soil AMF communities responded differently to soil pH. At the genus level, Glomus and Acaulospora were abundant in roots while Paraglomus and Redeckera were abundant in soil. Our findings suggest that AMF colonizing roots are protected from environmental stresses in soil. However, the root-soil-abundant taxa have adapted to both environments and represent a model AMF symbiont. This evidence of strategic exploitation of the rhizosphere by AMF supports prior hypotheses and provides insights into community ecology.

The papaya tree is not very exploitable on the international market because of the post-harvest decline of the fruits. In this study, we identified arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) from the rhizosphere of papaya in two agroecological zones of Cameroon (Njombe-Pendja: NP and Yaounde: Y). Morphological studies on the density, the rate of root colonization, the diversity of AMF species were evaluated. Molecular identification of AMF was performed by sequencing the small subunit (SSU) 18S rDNA gene region from soil samples. These genes were amplified from the AML and NS2 primers. The total number of spores per 100 g of dry soil was significantly different (P<0.05) depending on the sites, ranging from 391 in NP to 790 in Y sites. The frequency and intensity of root colonization was not significantly different in the two sites. Eleven (11) AMF belonging to seven (7) genera (Scutellospora, Gigaspora, Acaulospora, Entrophospora, Funneliformis, Glomus and Racocetra) were recorded. Two AMF species (T1: Scutellospora rosa and T6: Racocetra gregaria) were recorded at NP and absent at Y. The Shannon-Wiener index revealed a low diversity of AMF species. Homogeneity of species was recorded. Molecular analysis reveals that the AMF species obtained have sizes of 250 bp. Pb Stress and Ectomycorrhizas: Strong Protective Proteomic Responses in Poplar Roots Inoculated with Paxillus involutus Isolate and Characterized by Low Root Colonization Intensity.

The commonly observed increased heavy metal tolerance of ectomycorrhized plants is usually linked with the protective role of the fungal hyphae covering colonized plant root tips. However, the molecular tolerance mechanisms in heavy metal stressed low-colonized ectormyocrrhizal plants characterized by an ectomycorrhiza-triggered increases in growth are unknown. Here, we examined Populus × canescens microcuttings inoculated with the Paxillus involutus isolate, which triggered an increase in poplar growth despite successful colonization of only 1.9% ± 0.8 of root tips. The analyzed plants, lacking a mantle—a protective fungal biofilter—were grown for 6 weeks in agar medium enriched with 0.75 mM Pb(NO3)2. In minimally colonized ‘bare’ roots, the proteome response to Pb was similar to that in noninoculated plants (e.g., higher abundances of PM- and V-type H+ ATPases and lower abundance of ribosomal proteins). However, the more intensive activation of molecular processes leading to Pb sequestration or redirection of the root metabolic flux into amino acid and Pb chelate (phenolics and citrate) biosynthesis coexisted with lower Pb uptake compared to that in controls. The molecular Pb response of inoculated roots was more intense and effective than that of noninoculated roots in poplars.

Impact of soil stockpiling on ericoid mycorrhizal colonization and growth of velvetleaf blueberry (Vaccinium myrtilloides) and Labrador tea (Ledum groenlandicum)

Soil stockpiling is a common practice prior to the reclamation of surface mines. In this study, velvetleaf blueberry and Labrador tea plants were grown from seed in fresh soil, stockpiled soil (1 year), and autoclaved stockpiled soil (1 year) obtained from the Canadian boreal forest. After 7 months of growth, the root colonization intensity with ericoid mycorrhizal (ERM) fungi in both plants growing in stockpiled soil was lower compared to plants growing in the fresh soil. The diversity of ERM fungal species in roots also decreased due to soil stockpiling and Pezoloma ericae was absent from the plants growing in stockpiled soil. Changes in the ERM root colonization in plants growing in stockpiled soil were accompanied by decreases in root and shoot dry weights. Leaf chlorophyll, nitrogen, and phosphorus concentrations of velvetleaf blueberry were higher in fresh soil compared to 1‐year stockpiled soil. Plants grown in the autoclaved stockpiled soil became colonized by the thermotolerant ERM fungus Leohumicola verrucosa and showed higher root and shoot biomass compared to the nonautoclaved stockpiled soil. The results point to the importance of ERM fungi for growth of ericaceous plants, even under favorable environmental conditions and adequate fertilization, and suggest that reduced ERM colonization intensity and ERM fungal diversity in roots likely contributed to the negative effects of soil stockpiling on growth of velvetleaf blueberry and Labrador tea.

Aboveground and Belowground Colonization of Vegetation on a 17-Year-Old Cover with Capillary Barrier Effect Built on a Boreal Mine Tailings Storage Facility

Acid mine drainage is an important environmental risk linked to the surface storage of reactive mine tailings. To manage this problem, a cover with a capillary barrier effect (CCBE) can be used. This oxygen barrier cover relies on maintaining a fine-grained material layer (moisture-retaining layer, MRL) with a high degree of saturation. CCBEs can be colonized by surrounding plants. Plant roots pump water and could impact CCBE’s performance. This performance is predicted with unsaturated water flow numerical models in which vegetation parameters can be included. Vegetation parameters may be specific in a CCBE environment. Therefore, analyzing and quantifying the vegetation that colonizes this type of cover is necessary. Plant colonization was investigated through cover and density surveys on 12 transects on a 17-year-old CCBE in the mixed forest of Quebec, Canada. Then, aboveground vegetation and root colonization intensity at three depths in the MRL were characterized on 25 plots of five dominant vegetation types (Salix, Populus, Alnus, Picea sp., and herbaceous species). The mean root length density under plots dominated by Salix sp. was higher than in the other plots. Root colonization of the MRL was concentrated in the first 10 cm and occurred under all woody and herbaceous species as well. This work quantitatively describes, for the first time, the vegetation colonizing a CCBE both at the above- and belowground levels. These data will be useful to better predict the long-term performance of this engineered reclamation cover.

Seasonal variation in the response of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi to grazing intensity.

Despite existing evidence of pronounced seasonality in arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal communities, little is known about the ecology of AM fungi in response to grazing intensity in different seasons. Here, we assessed AM fungal abundance, represented by soil hyphal length density (HLD), mycorrhizal root colonization intensity (MI), and arbuscule intensity (AI) throughout three seasons (spring, summer, autumn) in a farm-scale field experiment in typical, grazed steppe vegetation in northern China. Seven levels of field-manipulated, grazing intensities had been maintained for over 13years within two topographies, flat and slope. We also measured soil nutrients and carbon content throughout the growing season to investigate whether seasonal variation in AM fungal abundance was related to seasonal shifts in soil resource availability along the grazing gradient. We further examined the association between AM fungal metrics in the different grazing treatments through the growing season. Our results showed a pronounced seasonal shift in HLD but there was no clear seasonality in MI and AI. HLD was significantly negatively related to grazing intensity over the course of the growing season from spring to autumn. However, MI and AI were related negatively to grazing intensity only in spring. In addition, differential responses of AM fungal abundance to grazing intensity at the two topographical sites were detected. No strong evidence was found for associations between AM fungal abundance and soil resource availability. Moreover, AM fungal internal and external abundance were correlated positively under the different grazing intensities throughout the growing season. Overall, our study suggests that external AM fungal structures in soil were more responsive to seasonal variation and grazing than internal structures in roots. The findings also suggest that early grazing may be detrimental to AM fungal root colonization of newly emerged plants.

FungalRoot: global online database of plant mycorrhizal associations.

Testing of ecological, biogeographical and phylogenetic hypotheses of mycorrhizal traits requires a comprehensive reference dataset about plant mycorrhizal associations. Here we present a database, FungalRoot, which summarizes publicly available data about vascular plant mycorrhizal type and intensity of root colonization by mycorrhizal fungi, accompanied with rich metadata. We compiled and digitized data about plant mycorrhizal colonization in nine widespread languages. The present version of the FungalRoot database contains 36303 species-by-site observations for 14870 plant species, tripling the previously available compiled information about plant mycorrhizal associations. Based on these data, we provide a recommended list of genus-level plant mycorrhizal associations, based on the majority of data for species and careful analysis of conflicting data. The majority of ectomycorrhizal and ericoid mycorrhizal plants are trees (92%) and shrubs (85%), respectively. The majority of arbuscular and nonmycorrhizal plant species are herbaceous (50% and 70%, respectively). Our publicly available database is a powerful resource for mycorrhizal scientists and ecologists. It features possibilities for dynamic updating and addition of data about plant mycorrhizal associations. The new database will promote research on plant and fungal biogeography and evolution, and on links between above- and belowground biodiversity and ecosystem functioning.

Plant growth drives soil nitrogen cycling and N-related microbial activity through changing root traits

Abstract Relationships between plants and nitrogen-related microbes may vary with plant growth. We investigated these dynamic relationships over three months by analyzing plant functional traits (PFT), arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) colonization, potential N mineralization (PNM), potential nitrification (PNA) and denitrification activities (PDA) in Dactylis glomerata cultures. D. glomerata recruited AMF during early growth, and thereafter maintained a constant root colonization intensity. This may have permitted high enough plant nutrient acquisition over the three months as to offset reduced soil inorganic N. PFT changed with plant age and declining soil fertility, resulting in higher allocation to root biomass and higher root C:N ratio. Additional to root AMF presence, PFT changes may have favored denitrification over mineralization through changes in soil properties, particularly increasing the quality of the labile carbon soil fraction. Other PFT changes, such as N uptake, modified the plants’ ability to compete with bacterial groups involved in N cycling.

Long-term grazing exclusion influences arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and their association with vegetation in typical steppe of Inner Mongolia, China

It is not certain that long-term grazing exclusion influences arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi and their association with steppe vegetation. In this study, soil and plant samples were collected from two sites of grazing exclusion since 1983 (E83) and 1996 (E96), and one site of free-grazing (FG) in the typical steppe of Xilinguole League, Inner Mongolia, China, and assayed for soil basic physicochemical properties, AM fungal parameters, aboveground biomass and shoot phosphorus (P) uptake as well. The results showed that long-term grazing exclusion of E83 and E96 led to less drastic seasonal changes and significant increases in spore density, hyphal length density and root colonization intensity of AM fungi and even soil alkaline phosphatase activity, by up to 300, 168, 110 and 102%, respectively, compared with those of FG site. In addition, the total aboveground biomass and shoot P uptake of E83 and E96 were 75–992% and 58–645%, respectively, higher than those of FG. Generally, the root colonization intensity, spore density, and hyphal length density of AM fungi were all positively correlated with the aboveground biomass and even shoot P uptake of plant. These results may imply that grazing exclusion play a critical role in increasing the growth of AM fungi, and subsequently, may increase plant P uptake and aboveground biomass production. Moreover, the spore density could sensitively reflect the impacts of long-term grazing exclusion on AM fungi since survival strategy of spores in soil.

Groundcover management changes grapevine root fungal communities and plant-soil feedback

The objective of this study was to determine if vineyard groundcover management can mitigate negative plant-soil feedback caused by soil borne pathogens through changes in root fungal communities. Whole-soil inoculum was collected from a field trial of groundcover identity (exotic grasses, exotic grasses plus legumes, native grasses, and native grasses plus forbs) and irrigation type (drip, sprinkler, and a combination of both) in a modified feedback experiment with grapevine rootstock ‘101–14’ (Vitis riparia x V. rupestris). To see if these groundcovers would differ in their ability to protect vines against negative feedback caused by a soil borne pathogen, we inoculated all pots with the soil-borne root pathogen, Ilyonectria liriodendri (Halleen, Rego & Crous) Chaverri & C. Salgado. After eight months, vines growing with soil trained by exotic grasses had greater above-ground growth response relative to sterilized control than did vines growing with soil trained by native grasses and forbs. These treatments also resulted in compositionally distinct root fungal communities. The intensity of root colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi did not differ among ground cover treatments. Our results show that soil feedback outcomes for grapevines, including negative effects of black foot pathogens such as Ilyonectria liriodendri, could depend on groundcover vegetation management that alters root-associated fungal communities.

Real-time PCR quantification of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi: does the use of nuclear or mitochondrial markers make a difference?

Root colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can be quantified by different approaches. We compared two approaches that enable discrimination of specific AMF taxa and are therefore emerging as alternative to most commonly performed microscopic quantification of AMF in roots: quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) using markers in nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrDNA) and mitochondrial ribosomal DNA (mtDNA). In a greenhouse experiment, Medicago truncatula was inoculated with four isolates belonging to different AMF species (Rhizophagus irregularis, Claroideoglomus claroideum, Gigaspora margarita and Funneliformis mosseae). The AMF were quantified in the root samples by qPCR targeted to both markers, microscopy and contents of AMF-specific phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA). Copy numbers of nrDNA and mtDNA were closely related within all isolates; however, the slopes and intercepts of the linear relationships significantly differed among the isolates. Across all isolates, a large proportion of variance in nrDNA copy numbers was explained by root colonization intensity or contents of AMF-specific PLFA, while variance in mtDNA copy numbers was mainly explained by differences among AMF isolates. We propose that the encountered inter-isolate differences in the ratios of mtDNA and nrDNA copy numbers reflect different physiological states of the isolates. Our results suggest that nrDNA is a more suitable marker region than mtDNA for the quantification of multiple AMF taxa as its copy numbers are better related to fungal biomass across taxa than are copy numbers of mtDNA.

AM fungi patchiness and the clonal growth of Glechoma hederacea in heterogeneous environments.

The effect of AM fungi spatial distribution on individual plant development may determine the dynamics of the whole plant community. We investigated whether clonal plants display, like for other resources, a foraging or a specialization response, to adapt to the distribution of AM fungi. Two separate experiments were done to investigate the response of Glechoma hederacea to a heterogeneous distribution of a mixture of 3 AM fungi species, and the effects of each species on colonization and allocation traits. No specialization and a limited foraging response to the heterogeneous distribution of AM fungi was observed. An effect of the AM fungal species on plant mass allocation and ramet production, but not on spacer length, was detected. Two possible explanations are proposed: (i) the plant’s responses are buffered by differences in individual effects of the fungal species or their root colonization intensity. (ii) the initial heterogeneous distribution of AM fungi is perceived as homogeneous by the plant either by reduced physiological integration or due to the transfer of AM fungi propagules through the stolons. Microscopic and DNA sequencing analyses provided evidence of this transfer, thus demonstrating the role of stolons as dispersal vectors of AM fungi within the plant clonal network.

AM fungal communities inhabiting the roots of submerged aquatic plant Lobelia dortmanna are diverse and include a high proportion of novel taxa.

While the arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis is known to be widespread in terrestrial ecosystems, there is growing evidence that aquatic plants also form the symbiosis. It has been suggested that symbiosis with AM fungi may represent an important adaptation for isoëtid plants growing on nutrient-poor sediments in oligotrophic lakes. In this study, we address AM fungal root colonization intensity, richness and community composition (based on small subunit (SSU) ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequencing) in five populations of the isoëtid plant species Lobelia dortmanna inhabiting oligotrophic lakes in Southern Sweden. We found that the roots of L. dortmanna hosted rich AM fungal communities and about 15% of the detected molecular taxa were previously unrecorded. AM fungal root colonization intensity and taxon richness varied along an environmental gradient, being higher in oligotrophic and lower in mesotrophic lakes. The overall phylogenetic structure of this aquatic fungal community differed from that described in terrestrial systems: The roots of L. dortmanna hosted more Archaeosporaceae and fewer Glomeraceae taxa than would be expected based on global data from terrestrial AM fungal communities.

The role of soil microbiota in plant stress management, though speculated a lot, is still far from being completely understood. We conducted a greenhouse experiment to examine synergistic impact of plant growth promoting rhizobacterium, Bacillus subtilis (BERA 71), and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) (Claroideoglomus etunicatum; Rhizophagus intraradices; and Funneliformis mosseae) to induce acquired systemic resistance in Talh tree (Acacia gerrardii Benth.) against adverse impact of salt stress. Compared to the control, the BERA 71 treatment significantly enhanced root colonization intensity by AMF, in both presence and absence of salt. We also found positive synergistic interaction between B. subtilis and AMF vis-a-vis improvement in the nutritional value in terms of increase in total lipids, phenols, and fiber content. The AMF and BERA 71 inoculated plants showed increased content of osmoprotectants such as glycine, betaine, and proline, though lipid peroxidation was reduced probably as a mechanism of salt tolerance. Furthermore, the application of bioinoculants to Talh tree turned out to be potentially beneficial in ameliorating the deleterious impact of salinity on plant metabolism, probably by modulating the osmoregulatory system (glycine betaine, proline, and phenols) and antioxidant enzymes system (SOD, CAT, POD, GR, APX, DHAR, MDAHR, and GSNOR).

Quantitative assessment of the differential impacts of arbuscular and ectomycorrhiza on soil carbon cycling.

A significant fraction of carbon stored in the Earth's soil moves through arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) and ectomycorrhiza (EM). The impacts of AM and EM on the soil carbon budget are poorly understood. We propose a method to quantify the mycorrhizal contribution to carbon cycling, explicitly accounting for the abundance of plant-associated and extraradical mycorrhizal mycelium. We discuss the need to acquire additional data to use our method, and present our new global database holding information on plant species-by-site intensity of root colonization by mycorrhizas. We demonstrate that the degree of mycorrhizal fungal colonization has globally consistent patterns across plant species. This suggests that the level of plant species-specific root colonization can be used as a plant trait. To exemplify our method, we assessed the differential impacts of AM:EM ratio and EM shrub encroachment on carbon stocks in sub-arctic tundra. AM and EM affect tundra carbon stocks at different magnitudes, and via partly distinct dominant pathways: via extraradical mycelium (both EM and AM) and via mycorrhizal impacts on above- and belowground biomass carbon (mostly AM). Our method provides a powerful tool for the quantitative assessment of mycorrhizal impact on local and global carbon cycling processes, paving the way towards an improved understanding of the role of mycorrhizas in the Earth's carbon cycle.

Global patterns of plant root colonization intensity by mycorrhizal fungi explained by climate and soil chemistry

AbstractAimMost vascular plants on Earth form mycorrhizae, a symbiotic relationship between plants and fungi. Despite the broad recognition of the importance of mycorrhizae for global carbon and nutrient cycling, we do not know how soil and climate variables relate to the intensity of colonization of plant roots by mycorrhizal fungi. Here we quantify the global patterns of these relationships.LocationGlobal.MethodsData on plant root colonization intensities by the two dominant types of mycorrhizal fungi world‐wide, arbuscular (4887 plant species in 233 sites) and ectomycorrhizal fungi (125 plant species in 92 sites), were compiled from published studies. Data for climatic and soil factors were extracted from global datasets. For a given mycorrhizal type, we calculated at each site the mean root colonization intensity by mycorrhizal fungi across all potentially mycorrhizal plant species found at the site, and subjected these data to generalized additive model regression analysis with environmental factors as predictor variables.ResultsWe show for the first time that at the global scale the intensity of plant root colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi strongly relates to warm‐season temperature, frost periods and soil carbon‐to‐nitrogen ratio, and is highest at sites featuring continental climates with mild summers and a high availability of soil nitrogen. In contrast, the intensity of ectomycorrhizal infection in plant roots is related to soil acidity, soil carbon‐to‐nitrogen ratio and seasonality of precipitation, and is highest at sites with acidic soils and relatively constant precipitation levels.Main conclusionsWe provide the first quantitative global maps of intensity of mycorrhizal colonization based on environmental drivers, and suggest that environmental changes will affect distinct types of mycorrhizae differently. Future analyses of the potential effects of environmental change on global carbon and nutrient cycling via mycorrhizal pathways will need to take into account the relationships discovered in this study.
