Summer recreational boating impacts on erosion, turbidity, and phosphorus levels in Canadian freshwater lakes

Increases in boat traffic over time can present a risk to the integrity of aquatic ecosystems. In addition to severe environmental degradation or boat-related disturbances, boat wave’s kinetic energy can induce a cumulative impact on freshwater ecosystems. However, seldom data report the impacts of boat waves on shoreline erosion and physico-chemical properties on freshwater lakes. In this study, we monitored shoreline erosion, turbidity, and total phosphorus levels. Wave-induced shoreline erosion was measured through shoreline rebar pin excavation across five lakes in southern Quebec. Sediment resuspension was measured through turbidity sampling in Lake Massawippi over three years. Total phosphorus was also monitored for potential impacts of sediment resuspension. Our study did not detect significant shoreline erosion. However, water turbidity was positively correlated with boat traffic and wind speed and negatively with the littoral slope angle. Moreover, water total phosphorus levels were positively correlated with turbidity. Thus, despite a lack of detectible impact on the shoreline, our results suggest that boat waves can have an impact on freshwater lakes with an increase in sediment resuspension and phosphorus availability. Management agencies could therefore benefit in the long-term from implementing or reinforcing policies aiming to minimize the impact of boats on sediment resuspension.

Exploring the Combined Effect of Exercise and Apigenin on Aluminium-Induced Neurotoxicity in Zebrafish.

Aluminium (AL) is a strong environmental neurotoxin linked to neurodegenerative disorders. Widespread industrial use leads to its presence in water systems, causing bioaccumulation in organisms. This, in turn, results in the bioaccumulation of AL in various organisms. Several studies have highlighted the benefits of enhanced physical activity in combating neurodegenerative diseases. Meanwhile widespread presence of apigenin in aquatic environment has been largely overlooked, in terms of its potential to counter AL-induced neurotoxicity. The combined impact of exercise and apigenin in mitigating the effects of AL-induced neurotoxicity in aquatic animals remains unexplored. Hence, the objective of this study is to determine whether the combined treatment of exercise and apigenin can effectively alleviate the chronic neurotoxicity induced by AL. Zebrafish that were exposed to AL showed behaviours resembling anxiety, increased aggression, unusual swimming pattern, and memory impairment, which are typical features observed in Alzheimer's disease (AD)-like syndrome. Combined treatment of exercise and apigenin protects zebrafish from AL-induced neurotoxicity, which was measured by improvements in memory, reduced anxiety and aggression, and increased levels of antioxidant enzymes and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity. Furthermore, AL exposure is associated with increased expression of genes related to neuroinflammation and AD. However, synergistic effect of exercise and apigenin counteract this effect in AL-treated zebrafish. These findings suggest that AL is involved in neurodegenerative diseases in fish, which could affect the integrity of aquatic ecosystem. Hence, there is a strong correlation between enhanced physical activity, apigenin, and the well-being of the ecosystem.

Assessment of chemical integrity based on ecological thresholds in one of the largest basins in China

Chemical integrity plays a crucial role in maintaining the ecological integrity of aquatic ecosystems. Despite its significance, assessments of ecological integrity often prioritize biological evaluations, leading to infrequent and inadequate scrutiny of chemical integrity. Additionally, a comprehensive framework for separately assessing chemical integrity has not been established. To address this issue, we established a new index for evaluating chemical integrity, achieved through indicator screening, normalization, and weight assignment. Combined with the threshold indicator taxa analysis (TITAN) and Pearson correlation analysis, main evaluation indicators and their indicator species were identified and the corresponding response threshold was determined. These thresholds were then applied to improve the normalization method, with weights determined by indicator species proportions. This index was applied to evaluate the chemical integrity of the Huai River Basin, which is one of the largest basins in China. The results indicated that ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), nitrate nitrogen (NO2-N), pH, and turbidity (Turb) were identified as the core parameters for evaluating chemical integrity. The conventional normalization method (max–min normalization) led to overestimation of the assessment results, whereas improved normalization method based on ecological threshold yielded better and more reasonable results. This study provided a reference for the selection of appropriate indicators and improvement of normalization method to better assess chemical integrity. And it would become a useful tool for monitoring and rehabilitating the chemical integrity in such basins.

Setting nutrient boundaries to protect aquatic communities: The importance of comparing observed and predicted classifications using measures derived from a confusion matrix

Defining nutrient thresholds that protect and support the ecological integrity of aquatic ecosystems is a fundamental step in maintaining their natural biodiversity and preserving their resilience. With increasing catchment pressures and climate change, it is more important than ever to develop clear methods to establish thresholds for status classification and management of waters. This must often be achieved using complex data and should be robust to interference from additional pressures as well as ameliorating or confounding conditions. We use both artificial and real data to examine challenges in setting nutrient thresholds in unbalanced and skewed data. We found significant advantages to using binary logistic regression over other techniques. However, one of the key challenges is objectively selecting a probability from which to derive the nutrient threshold. For this purpose, the examination of the proportions of matching and mismatching status classifications of nutrients and a biological quality element using a confusion matrix is a key step that should be more widely adopted in threshold selection. We examined a large array of statistical measures of classification accuracy and their performance over combinations of skewness and imbalance in the data. The most appropriate threshold probability is a compromise between maximising overall classification accuracy and reducing mismatches expressed as commission (false positives) without excessive omission (false negatives). An application to a lake type indicated total phosphorus thresholds that would be around 50 μg l−1 lower than the threshold achieved by an ‘unguided’ approach, indicating that this approach is a very significant development meriting attention from national authorities responsible for water management.

Effects of altered streamflow on macroinvertebrate taxonomic richness and composition in the Goulburn River, Australia

River systems have been stressed by the construction of dams and regulation structures which influence aquatic ecosystem integrity. Previous studies considered the general significance of regional streamflow regimes for aquatic communities, but they did not investigate the influence of specific components of flow regimes on aquatic ecosystems under the combined impact of regulation and extreme drought events, limiting our ability to design and implement precise environmental flow management strategies. This study aims to quantify the relationship between macroinvertebrate biotic indices and ecologically important streamflow characteristics derived from five natural flow regime components by investigating the spatiotemporal variation in the macroinvertebrate assemblage in regulated and unregulated reaches and identifying specific flow indices that have a direct impact on macroinvertebrates in the Goulburn basin in Victoria, Australia during the Millennium Drought period. The relationship between dominant flow metrics and macroinvertebrates indices was investigated using boosted regression trees (BRT). The results revealed a significant difference in hydrological variability between regulated and unregulated reaches. The regulated reaches demonstrated reduced hydrological variability during low flow periods, and rapid increase in discharge during high flow periods when compared to unregulated reach. Unregulated reach had 38% more taxa richness than regulated reach impacted by hydropeaking. Eight indicator taxa were identified in the unregulated reach, and they exhibited a higher Stream Invertebrate Grade Number Average Level (SIGNAL 2) score, indicating that they were highly sensitive species. The maximum flow in June was the most important flow parameter that influences the macroinvertebrate indices as per the BRT model. Better management of environmental flows will benefit from identifying which aspects of the natural flow regime impact stream ecosystems and predicting the consequences of altered flow regimes on aquatic ecosystems.

Fly ash-based zeolitic materials of different surface chemistry and texture: Insight into adsorption performance and mechanisms of aqueous BTEX removal

Water contamination caused by anthropogenic, and unforecasted release of BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene) compounds threatens the quality and integrity of aquatic ecosystems. BTEX sorption with novel materials characterized by increased hydrophobicity and stability has been proposed to overcome such contamination. This study aimed to investigate the whole array of hydrothermally synthesized zeolitic materials exhibiting different properties, as well as zeolite/carbon and zeolite/vermiculite composites, to analyse their potential in removing aqueous BTEX. Various parameters and experimental conditions, including the type of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), initial concentration, BTEX coexistence, and increased solution salinity, were studied to verify the applicability of the derived materials. The adsorption capacity of the materials and their governing removal mechanisms were additionally elucidated. The primary removal mechanism involved partitioning on unburned carbon residues, which was observed in zeolite/carbon composites showing the highest BTEX removal efficiency. NaA-zeolite/carbon composite was the most effective in removal of BTEX, with the removal capacity of 15.36 mg/g towards p-xylene. Moreover, the increased salinity of the BTEX solution affects adsorption performance for polar adsorbates, irrespectively of the applied zeolite/carbon composite. Fly-ash (FA) and high-carbon fly-ash (HCFA) were successfully valorised into products with better textural features. These products may effectively tackle organic water pollution caused by VOCs under near-real-life conditions.

Remote quantification of the trophic status of Chinese lakes

Abstract. Assessing eutrophication in lakes is of key importance, as this parameter constitutes a major aquatic ecosystem integrity indicator. The trophic state index (TSI), which is widely used to quantify eutrophication, is a universal paradigm in the scientific literature. In this study, a methodological framework is proposed for quantifying and mapping TSI using the Sentinel Multispectral Imager sensor and fieldwork samples. The first step of the methodology involves the implementation of stepwise multiple regression analysis of the available TSI dataset to find some band ratios, such as blue/red, green/red and red/red, which are sensitive to lake TSI. Trained with in situ measured TSI and match-up Sentinel images, we established the XGBoost of machine learning approaches to estimate TSI, with good agreement (R2= 0.87, slope = 0.85) and fewer errors (MAE = 3.15 and RMSE = 4.11). Additionally, we discussed the transferability and applications of XGBoost in three lake classifications: water quality, absorption contribution and reflectance spectra types. We selected XGBoost to map TSI in 2019–2020 with good-quality Sentinel-2 Level-1C images embedded in the ESA to examine the spatiotemporal variations of the lake trophic state. In a large-scale observation, 10 m TSI products from 555 lakes in China facing eutrophication and unbalanced spatial patterns associated with lake basin characteristics, climate and anthropogenic activities were investigated. The methodological framework proposed herein could serve as a useful resource for continuous, long-term and large-scale monitoring of lake aquatic ecosystems, supporting sustainable water resource management.

Comprehensive evaluation of environmental flows in the Yangtze River regulated by two large dams

The ecological sustainability of rivers and floodplains depends on their natural flows. Dam construction on rivers has dramatically altered the hydrologic regimes, in turn affecting aquatic ecosystem integrity. The environmental flow components was applied to exam the impacts of the two dams (i.e., the Gezhouba Dam and the Three Gorges Dam) on downstream flows of the Yangtze River, China. Due to the operation of the two dams, the Yangtze River's flow regimes became homogenous through increasing streamflow during the dry season and decreasing streamflow in the flood season. The monthly low flows from January to April significantly increased by 14-31%, while October and November low flows significantly decreased by 18-25%. We observed the decreased duration and frequency of extreme low flows and floods, particularly the disappearance in large floods. These homogenous flows strongly influence the aquatic biodiversity. To alleviate the hydrologic alteration and minimize the negative ecological influence, low flows should be lower and floods should be reestablished as a natural state. The flow characteristics of duration, timing and rate of change should also be incorporated into the environmental flow recommendations. Our results could provide a potential solution to the tradeoffs between water resources exploitation and natural water requirement in the highly regulated rivers.

Swimming behavior and energy metabolism of the calanoid copepod invader Sinodiaptomus sarsi

The appearance of invasive species threatens the integrity of aquatic ecosystems. Much is known about dispersal and introduction mechanisms while little is known on the biological properties of invasive species, such as behavior and energy efficiency, allowing them to successfully colonize new environments and compete with native species. This study examines the functional features of the Asian invasive copepod Sinodiaptomus sarsi (Rylov, 1923) that has invaded Europe since 2016. We focused on the energy metabolism and kinematic parameters of the main swimming types (i.e., gliding, hovering, small relocation jumps, and the escape reaction) of females and males of S. sarsi. Based on the above parameters, the mechanical energy for swimming and the respiration energy needed for movement were calculated. Females and males spend up to 95% of time hovering and slowly gliding at a speed of up to 0.5 cm s−1. During the remaining time, the average swimming speed was 8 cm s−1 by small jumps. In contrast, the average speed was 42 cm s−1 during escape swimming. Non-ovigerous females moved faster than ovigerous females during all relocation swimming types except for upward gliding. While performing small jumps with a frequency of 0.79 Hz, the respiration rate of active non-ovigerous females (0.32 ± 0.03 µg O2 ind−1 h−1) was 2.1 times higher than that of anesthetized individuals. The respiration energy associated with movement was 2.6 * 10−3 J h−1, while the total mechanical energy was only 4.2% of this value. The low energy cost of feeding along with the high speed of locomotion may explain the success of this Asian invader in European waters.

Re-validation of biochemophysical variables as metrics for assessing the ecological integrity of an aquatic ecosystem (Badagry Lagoon, Lagos, Nigeria)

Assessment of ecological integrity of aquatic ecosystem is a major priority for scientists, government and private concerns all-over the world. In this study, multi-metric indices (physico-chemistry, biodiversity, length–weight relationship and condition factor) was used to evaluate the ecological integrity of Badagry Lagoon, Lagos, Nigeria. Three sampling sites (Akarakumo, Topo and Ajido) were selected based on extent of fishing activities. Water and fish samples were collected monthly from the three sampling stations for ten consecutive months (February to November, 2018). Standard methods were used for the analysis of physico-chemical parameters, fish diversity, length–weight relationship and condition factor of some fish species from the study sites. Simpson’s dominance index (0.056–0.057) and Shannon diversity index (3.11–3.13) were similar for the three sampling stations. The initial growth coefficient (a) in this study varied within a very narrow range (0.01–0.04) while the growth coefficient (b) had wider range (2.14–3.16). Growth pattern was predominantly negative allometry. Most of the fish species encountered were not under threat of extinction except Sarotherodon melanotheron and Sarotherodon galilaeus that were critically endangered and vulnerable, respectively. The physico-chemical variables of the sampling stations indicated that the ecological integrity of the water body is high, and this was corroborated by the results of biodiversity study, length–weight relationship and condition factors. Therefore, these metrics can be used in the assessment of the ecological integrity of aquatics.

Reservoirs regulated by small dams have a similar warming effect than lakes on the summer thermal regime of streams

Small dams account for the majority of reservoirs throughout the world, yet little is known about their effects on stream temperatures. Given that water temperature is vital for maintaining the integrity of aquatic ecosystems, studying the effects of small dams is important. This study aims to understand the effect of small dams on summer stream temperatures in a protected area in southern Quebec, Canada. We assessed the effect of small surface-release dams on four attributes of the thermal regimes (magnitude, frequency and duration of warm events, and rate of change) of streams by comparing water temperature measured in the main tributary upstream and in the main outlet downstream of the reservoir. We also compared the thermal effects of reservoirs to those of natural lakes of similar size. Using a generalized additive model, we identified key determinants of stream temperature to assess the influence of reservoir and natural lake characteristics on the thermal regime of streams. In August 2020, we observed an average warming of 3.7 °C downstream of reservoirs regulated by small dams compared to conditions upstream of the reservoir. During this period, the warming effect of reservoirs was not significantly different from the warming effect of natural lakes (3.4 °C). In addition to the drainage area, distance to an upstream water body, and the proportion of the watershed occupied by water bodies were the primary determinants of stream temperature in August, demonstrating the importance of nearby water bodies on stream thermal regimes. Given their warming effect, small waterbodies may limit the available habitat for species that are sensitive to warm temperatures. As the construction of small dams is accelerating at the global scale, a clear understanding of the cumulative effects of small lakes and reservoirs on stream temperature is required to ensure the sound management of aquatic ecosystems.

Urban development and industrialization impacts on semiaquatic bugs diversity: A case study in eastern Amazonian streams

Landscape changes have caused the decline of biodiversity and affected the integrity of aquatic ecosystems. In this study, we assessed the influence of industrialization associated with urban development on aquatic environments and the biodiversity of semiaquatic bugs (Gerromorpha) at different scales (water quality, habitat, and landscape). Using the simple buffer method, we evaluated nine streams assessing water quality variables, habitat structure, and linear features (radius ​= ​300 ​m, length ​= ​600 ​m) for the percentage of land use and land cover. Our results found that species composition of Gerromorpha was mainly affected by primary forest cover, habitat integrity, leaves substrate, and water temperature (29% explanation), and the species richness was mostly influenced by the habitat integrity index (HII) and phosphorus concentrations. The model that best explained the variation in species richness showed a positive relationship with phosphorus concentrations and HII (43% variation). Therefore, our results show that those human activities are the main factors altering aquatic biodiversity from local to regional scales. Therefore, the retention of riparian forests – even in urban and industrialized areas – can maintain the diversity of semiaquatic insect species by providing suitable environments for the habitat, feeding, and reproductive requirements of these aquatic organisms. Finally, our results also show that the management of riparian vegetation in urban areas and industrial complexes promotes aquatic biodiversity conservation in regions under development in the Amazon.

The vital roles of blue foods in the global food system

Blue foods play a central role in food and nutrition security for billions of people and are a cornerstone of the livelihoods, economies, and cultures of many coastal and riparian communities. Blue foods are extraordinarily diverse, are often rich in essential micronutrients and fatty acids, and can often be produced in ways that are more environmentally sustainable than terrestrial animal-source foods. Capture fisheries constitute the largest wild-food resource for human extraction that would be challenging to replace. Yet, despite their unique value, blue foods have often been left out of food system analyses, policies, and investments. Here, we focus on three imperatives for realizing the potential of blue foods: (1) Bring blue foods into the heart of food system decision-making; (2) Protect and develop the potential of blue foods to help end malnutrition; and (3) Support the central role of small-scale actors in fisheries and aquaculture. Recognition of the importance of blue foods for food and nutrition security constitutes a critical justification to preserve the integrity and diversity of aquatic species and ecosystems.

Health status monitoring of Mystus cavasius through histological aberrations of liver and kidney due to the deterioration of water Physico-chemical parameters in Surma River

Water pollution is a threat to aquatic organisms, including fish, and is a global concern for aquatic biodiversity and ecosystem integrity. This study evaluates the effect of waterborne pollutants on Gangetic Mystus (Mystus cavasius) collected from the Surma River, Bangladesh between April 2018 to March 2019. Histomorphological studies of liver and kidney were carried out on 10 individual species collected at each of four sampling sites and one control site. Water quality parameters were also recorded at each site. We observed several histological alterations in the liver, including hemorrhage, pyknosis, necrosis, vacuolation, lipid droplet, nuclear alterations, and hepatocyte hypertrophy. In the kidney, the histopathological alterations included vacuolation, necrosis, hemorrhage, degeneration of glomerular tubule, dilation of Bowman's space and blood congestion. Temperature fluctuated between 19.7 ± 1.57 °C and 32.3 ± 1.74 °C, dissolved oxygen at the surface ranged from 4.15 ± 0.31 to 5.15 ± 0.35 ppm, pH ranged from 7.42 ± 0.33 to 6.50 ± 0.12, nitrite ranged from 0.022 ± 0.21 to 0.817 ± 0.02 mg/l, ammonia ranged from 0.70 ± 0.11 to 0.16 ± 0.19 mg/l and alkalinity ranged from 109.41 ± 0.02 to 14.32 ± 0.20 mg/l during the time frame of the study. Water quality parameters could not found the suitable range from November to February. The main aim of the present investigation revealed that histopathological changes of liver and kidney of Gangetic Mystus appeared to be a useful biomarker to assess the impact of toxicity of water pollution.

The toxicological impact of the sunscreen active ingredient octinoxate on the photosynthesis activity of Chlorella sp.

Products designed to filter ultraviolet (UV) light are responsible for growing levels of anthropogenic environmental contamination. Octinoxate (ONT) is among the most common UV filtering active ingredients in cosmetics and sunscreens. The present study was designed to evaluate the toxicological effects of ONT on the photosynthetic activity of the Chlorella species of marine microalgae. These analyses identified ONT as a potent photo-toxicant, the effects of which were more pronounced upon light exposure relative to in the dark. Short-term ONT exposure had no effect on photosynthetic electron transport capacity in the dark but did significantly reduce the ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase activity in Chlorella cells, suggesting that this compound can directly suppress the photosynthetic Calvin cycle. When cells were subsequently exposed to light, the disruption of this cycle resulted in an excess of excitation energy, in turn driving the excessive generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS-mediated disruption of cellular metabolism further aggravated this ONT-induced microalgal damage. As such, under natural light conditions, these microalgae cells are exposed to increased oxidative stress that impairs their growth and causes pigment bleaching. Restricting the utilization of ONT-containing sunscreens thus has the potential to better preserve the integrity of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.

Evaluating suspended sediment and turbidity reduction projects in a glacially conditioned catchment through dynamic regression and fluvial process‐based modelling

AbstractElevated turbidity (Tn) and suspended sediment concentrations (SSC) during and following flood events can degrade water supply quality and aquatic ecosystem integrity. Streams draining glacially conditioned mountainous terrain, such as those in the Catskill Mountains of New York State, are particularly susceptible to high levels of Tn and SSC sourced from erosional contact with glacial‐related sediment. This study forwards a novel approach to evaluate the effectiveness of stream restoration best management practices (BMPs) meant to reduce stream Tn and SSC, and demonstrates the approach within the Stony Clove sub‐basin of the Catskills, a water supply source for New York City. The proposed approach is designed to isolate BMP effects from natural trends in Tn and SSC caused by trends in discharge and shifts in average Tn or SSC per unit discharge (Q) following large flood events. We develop Dynamic Linear Models (DLMs) to quantify how Tn‐Q and SSC‐Q relationships change over time at monitoring stations upstream and downstream of BMPs within the Stony Clove and in three other sub‐basins without BMPs, providing observational evidence of BMP effectiveness. A process‐based model, the River Erosion Model, is then developed to simulate natural, hydrology‐driven SSC‐Q dynamics in the Stony Clove sub‐basin (absent of BMP effects). We use DLMs to compare the modelled and observed SSC‐Q dynamics and isolate the influence of the BMPs. Results suggest that observed reductions in SSC and Tn in the Stony Clove sub‐basin have been driven by a combination of declining streamflow and the installed BMPs, confirming the utility of the BMPs for the monitored hydrologic conditions.

Estimating aquatic invertebrate diversity in the southern Alps using data from Biodiversity Days

High biodiversity is a prerequisite for the integrity, stability, and functioning of global aquatic ecosystems, but it is currently subject to anthropogenic threats. Small freshwater bodies with high habitat diversity are essential to sustain regional biodiversity, but species inventory and biodiversity are largely overlooked, especially in mountainous regions. In the Italian Alps, obligate assessments of freshwater biota (e.g., for the European water framework directive, WFD) are usually done in larger rivers or lakes only, which is why many taxa from small freshwater habitats might have been overlooked so far. Here we summarize and discuss the efforts to record aquatic invertebrates within the framework of so-called "Biodiversity Days", organized since 2001 at 13 different sites located across the North Italian province of South Tyrol. These events with voluntary participation of scientists and naturalists from universities and environmental agencies led to the detection of 334 benthic invertebrate taxa in streams and lakes (mostly species or genus level), whereby higher taxa richness was found in streams. The overall hierarchy of species numbers within invertebrate orders or families corresponded to that of other Alpine regions (groups richest in taxa were Chironomidae and Trichoptera) and these Biodiversity Days contributed to biodiversity research of that region in detecting 167 additional taxa. Besides analyzing yearly gains in the regional taxa inventory, we predict that future surveys will lead to new discoveries of aquatic taxa for that province (i.e., current modeling estimates a regional inventory of more than 600 taxa). However, specific surveys in hitherto unconsidered habitats, such as morphologically modified or urban waters, might reveal even more taxa than currently estimated. Besides characterizing the invertebrate fauna of this region and providing a first reference list for future monitoring projects in the same region, this work demonstrates that such Biodiversity Days can contribute to biodiversity research.

Recharge from glacial meltwater is critical for alpine springs and their microbiomes

The importance of glacier meltwater as a source of mountain-block recharge remains poorly quantified, yet it may be essential to the integrity of alpine aquatic ecosystems by maintaining baseflow in streams and perennial flow in springs. We test the hypothesis that meltwater from alpine glaciers is a critical source of recharge for mountain groundwater systems using traditional stable isotopic source-identification techniques combined with a novel application of microbial DNA. We find that not only is alpine glacier meltwater a critical source of water for many springs, but that alpine springs primarily supported by glacial meltwater contain microbial taxa that are unique from springs primarily supported by seasonal recharge.
