Appreciative Inquiry: An Integrative Review of Studies in Three Disciplines

This integrative literature review aims to review, critique, and synthesize the existing literature on appreciative inquiry (AI) in three disciplines where the most significant number of AI-related articles could be found: healthcare, higher education, and management. We sought to identify critical insights, along with similarities and divergencies between the three fields. We identified diverse reasons for adopting AI methods and differing degrees to which researchers adhere to the 4D cycle. The reviewed literature suggests that AI yields positive effects across three levels (individual, group, and organization). Our results indicate that positive impacts from AI can be achieved even when not all steps of the 4D cycle are strictly followed. Furthermore, we discovered numerous innovative AI applications and multiple instances of using modified AI models. Based on our research findings, we proposed a systems model for understanding the AI process and offered implications for both HRD research and practice.

Designing the CSRD System: Insights from Management Systems to Advance a Strategic Approach

ABSTRACT The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) represents a pivotal opportunity to embed sustainability into corporate strategy. This article investigates CSRD from strategic and Decision System Support (DSS) perspectives, both being novel fields of CSRD research. By exploring the interconnection between these domains through the lens of management systems, particularly ISO14001, our study aims to uncover strategic insights and inform the development of robust DSS for CSRD. We conduct a thematic comparison of CSRD and ISO14001 standards, revealing strategic potentials of CSRD and implications for DSS development. Drawing on an integrative literature review, we identify key factors influencing the integration of sustainability into corporate strategy and provide insights into the strategic implications of management systems. Our study contributes to the professional debate on CSRD by elucidating its relationship with strategy, environmental management systems, and DSS, offering practical guidance for corporations navigating the complexities of sustainability reporting and management challenge never seen before.

Glucans: A Therapeutic Alternative for Sepsis Treatment

Sepsis treatment is a challenging condition due to its complexity, which involves host inflammatory responses to a severe and potentially fatal infection, associated with organ dysfunction. The aim of this study was to analyze the scientific literature on the immunomodulatory effects of glucans in a murine model of systemic infection induced by cecal ligation and puncture. This study comprises an integrative literature review based on systematic steps, with searches carried out in the PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase databases. In most studies, the main type of glucan investigated was β-glucan, at 50 mg/kg, and a reduction of inflammatory responses was identified, minimizing the occurrence of tissue damage leading to increased animal survival. Based on the data obtained and discussed in this review, glucans represent a promising biotechnological alternative to modulate the immune response and could potentially be used in the clinical management of septic individuals.

The Digital Evolution Strategies for Overcoming Cybersecurity and Adoption Challenges in French SMEs

French Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) face a crucial juncture in their path towards digital transformation. They encounter notable obstacles in embracing digital technologies and bolstering cybersecurity measures. This integrative literature review examines the complex relationship between digitalization and cybersecurity, highlighting their importance for enterprises' ongoing competitiveness and operational security. The study is focused on two primary areas: the integration of digital technologies and the establishment of robust cybersecurity frameworks. This review thoroughly examines existing research to offer strategic insights for leaders of French SMEs and IT policymakers. It employs rigorous inclusion and exclusion criteria, detailed data extraction, and comprehensive synthesis to ensure a systematic analysis. The findings emphasize the critical roles of organizational culture and innovation diffusion in shaping the adoption of technology and the implementation of security practices. The review puts forward practical suggestions to address the digital divide, strengthen cybersecurity readiness, and promote a digital environment accessible to all sectors of French SMEs. These recommendations focus on enhancing operational efficiency, minimizing expenses, and fortifying the security framework to bolster a solid national digital transformation. The study's conclusions highlight the significance of these findings for future research and practice, providing a thorough guide for incorporating digital transformation and cybersecurity in the context of French SMEs.

P.043 Developing a brief clinical dataset for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Background: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) causes progressive muscle wasting. The Canadian Neuromuscular Disease Registry (CNDR) previously developed a comprehensive DMD dataset in accordance with the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF). Our objective was to develop a brief ICF core set that best aligns with the priorities of individuals and families affected by DMD. Methods: A literature review of best practices was prepared and reviewed by a multidisciplinary team at the CNDR. The entire process involved patient and parent input and participation and was compliant with the World Health Organization guideline to develop brief ICF core sets. Results: An eight step process was developed. In brief, these included multi-stakeholder consensus meetings, ranking surveys, mapping to international standards, further consensus meeting, evaluation of clinical feasibility in multidisciplinary clinics across Canada, an integrated literature review, and development of a finalized brief ICF core set for DMD. Conclusions: The process of identifying the priorities of those living with DMD using the brief ICF core set will support post-marketing surveillance of novel therapies. The next step in this project will be to identify the specific outcome measures that best align with the brief ICF core set for DMD, for their eventual inclusion in the CNDR registry.

Wetland gentrification: the African variant on ecological gentrification

There is growing scholarly interest in notions of ecological gentrification – whereby environmental improvements drive up real estate prices, with the subsequent displacement of low-income residents – particularly in the global North. Drawing on an integrative review of extant literature on African urbanism, urban greenery encroachment and gentrification, this paper argues that the Western notion of ecological gentrification has little or no application in African cities, which are confronted with rapid encroachment on urban wetlands amidst burgeoning urbanization and its attendant increasing demand for property development. We conceptualize the African variant on ecological gentrification as “wetland gentrification”. It occurs when land scarcity and rising property values in African cities cause indiscriminate depletion of urban wetlands for property development, leading to the destruction of ecological resources and displacement of human populations. This paper discusses, among other topics, the implications of wetland gentrification for urban governance and vice versa.

Educational Programme to Implement Skin-to-skin Contact for Preterm Infants in the Intensive Care Units: Qualitative Study Proposal

Introduction Skin-to-skin contact (SSC) has been widely adopted as an efficacious and useful approach to neonatal care. Despite the endorsement of this practice by the World Health Organization (WHO) over a decade ago, healthcare institutions in South Africa, particularly in the North West Province (NWP), have shown limited progress with regard to its implementation. Of particular concern is the fact that South Africa accounts for 60% of the global mortality rate among low birth weight (LBW) preterm infants. Therefore, an educational programme can be beneficial for both parents and nurses in implementing SSC for preterm infants in intensive care units, with the aim of reducing the neonatal mortality rate. Aim The aim of this research is to develop an educational programme to implement SSC for preterm infants in intensive care units of the NWP. Methods This study will be conducted in three phases. Phase 1: An integrative literature review (ILR) will be conducted by following these five steps: formulation of the review question, search strategy, critical appraisal, data analysis, synthesis and conclusion. Phase 2 represents an empirical study using a qualitative exploratory and descriptive design. Purposive sampling will be used to select two populations. Population one will be parents of preterm infants and population two will be registered nurses and midwives. Semi-structured focus group discussions (FGDs) with a minimum of six participants will be used to collect data in both populations until reaching data saturation. Data will then be analyzed using steps proposed by Creswell and Clark. Phase 3 consists of the development of an educational programme to implement SSC for preterm infants in intensive care units, using Kellogg’s Logic Model (KLM). The following three KLM steps will be used for the development of an educational programme: inputs and activities, identifying outputs, outcomes, and outcomes indicators. Conclusion The study furnishes an introduction to the research, the aim and objectives of the research as well as the research methodology that will be adhered to. The results obtained from phases 1 and 2 will be used to form the basis for the development of an education programme in phase 3.

Facilitating Utilization of Evidence-Informed Management by Nurse Managers in Healthcare Facilities: An Integrative Literature Review

Background and Objectives. The scarce empirical and scientific information concerning evidence-informed management reports various benefits for nurse managers, including reduced staff turnover, enhanced working environments, and improved patient outcomes and policy implementation. This review summarizes best available evidence on facilitating utilization of evidence-informed management practices by nurse managers in healthcare facilities. The review could assist in a comprehensive overview of determinants that could assist nurse managers’ successful utilization of evidence-informed management. Methods. An integrative review of the literature was conducted, including peer-reviewed articles published between 2010 and 2022. The databases used were BioMed Central, CINAHL Complete, MEDLINE Complete, PubMed (via EBSCOhost), the Complimentary Index (Taylor and Francis, Elsevier, Wiley, and Springer), Sabinet, ScienceDirect, and Scopus, followed by a manual search using Google Scholar and a citation search. Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence-based Practice Research and non-Research evidence tools were used for appraisal. Thematic analysis was used to synthesize the extracted data. Results. Based on thirteen determinants influencing nurse managers’ utilization of evidence-informed management practices, three themes were identified from a total of thirteen relevant studies: (1) Nurse manager determinants in utilization of evidence-informed management (Microlevel); (2) Organizational determinants in utilization of evidence-informed management (Mesolevel); (3) External stakeholders and context determinants of utilization of evidence-informed management practices (Macrolevel). Conclusion. The themes were found to be interconnected and interdependent, facilitating the effective utilization of evidence-informed management by nurse managers at micro-, meso-, and macrolevels, but highlight the need for strengthening health systems and support. Future studies are required to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the determinants influencing nurse managers’ utilization of evidence-informed management practices. Implications for Nursing Management. For nurse managers to optimally utilize evidence-informed management, executive management and policymakers require to provide resources and support such as continuous education, incentives, effective communication, funding structures, and ownership.

Leadership training and development in the age of artificial intelligence

Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the multifaceted implications of AI on leadership dynamics and organizational practices. By synthesizing insights from behavioral theory, AI analytics, and ethical considerations, the study aims to equip leaders with the requisite knowledge, skills, and mindset to foster adaptive leadership, anticipate change, and cultivate innovation amidst AI-driven disruptions. Design/methodology/approach This article employs a qualitative research approach, integrating literature review and conceptual analysis to explore the intersection of leadership development and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Drawing insights from scholarly articles, theoretical frameworks and practice, the study elucidates the evolving landscape of leadership in the context of AI adoption. Practical action points are derived to guide organizational leaders and educators in navigating AI-induced transformations effectively. Findings The integration of AI into leadership dynamics necessitates a paradigm shift in leadership paradigms, emphasizing the fusion of technical proficiency with emotional intelligence. Behavioral theory coupled with AI analytics offers valuable insights into effective leadership behaviors, facilitating the design of tailored leadership development programs. Proactive leadership strategies, ethical considerations, and talent management emerge as pivotal factors in navigating AI-induced transformations and fostering organizational resilience. Originality/value This article contributes to the literature by synthesizing diverse perspectives on AI leadership and offering practical action points for organizational leaders and educators. By highlighting the integration of behavioral theory, AI analytics, and ethical considerations, the study underscores the importance of interdisciplinary approaches in leadership research and education. The insights derived from this study inform organizational practices, curriculum development in higher education, and future research agendas, fostering ethical AI adoption and cultivating adaptive leadership cultures in the age of Artificial Intelligence.

Study of the relationchips between leadership and psychological safety

Leadership is an essential and indispensable factor in organizations and has a direct connection with organizational effectiveness. When there is a connection between employees and leadership, it is possible to generate psychological safety, which allows free expression of judgments and favors the productivity of employees, who can be more creative because they are more available for expression and learning. For the preparation of this article, an integrative literature review was carried out, using the method proposed by Whittemore and Knafl (2005), with the research problem: what is the influence of leadership on psychological safety in organizations? The review findings portray the importance of psychological safety as a mediator between the leader's role and the team's behaviors, and the transformational leadership style favors psychological safety in organizations.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging and functional dyspepsia: Predictive value questioned

Functional dyspepsia is a challenging condition in gastroenterology, characterized by digestive symptoms without evidence of organic pathology. Conventional diagnostic methods have significant limitations in terms of sensitivity and specificity. This study aims to explore the potential of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) as an innovative diagnostic approach for functional dyspepsia, with a view to improving diagnostic accuracy and benefiting patients. This integrative literature review, following the PRISMA guidelines, investigated the use of fMRI in the diagnosis of functional dyspepsia. Sixteen articles were selected after rigorous screening, employing detailed descriptive analysis and narrative synthesis. As a result, it was noted that patients with functional dyspepsia exhibit alterations in brain activity, especially in areas associated with sensory processing and emotional control, indicating dysfunction in these regions. It is concluded that fMRI has promising potential in the diagnosis of functional dyspepsia, complementing conventional methods. Although specific pathognomonic patterns have not been identified, the affected brain areas offer a basis for applying fMRI, improving understanding of the condition and enabling more targeted therapies.

Experience of Family Members of Relatives With Substance Use Disorders: An Integrative Literature Review.

Background: Substance use disorders (SUDs) present substantial challenges for family members living with or supporting relatives with SUDs. This review explores existing literature on family members' experiences with relatives with SUDs and their support needs. Method: An integrative review was conducted by searching literature in the Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health, PubMed, PsycINFO, ProQuest, and Scopus databases. Results: Five themes were generated based on analysis of 26 empirical studies: (a) family members' and caregivers' experiences of SUDs; (b) impact of SUDs-related aggressive/violent behaviors on families; (c) dilemmas faced by family members; (d) culture and family stigma related to SUDs; and (e) factors contributing to SUDs, challenges, and support needs. The review highlighted barriers to seeking support due to stigma and guilt, underscoring the need for structured support programs. Conclusions: This review sheds light on the challenges faced by family members with relatives suffering from SUDs and emphasizes the crucial need for structured support programs. The findings provide insights for developing initiatives to address the social and trauma-induced needs of family members and to establish support resources for them.

Diagnosis and treatment of neonatal bacterial meningitis: integrative review

Objective: Understand the pathology and management of neonatal bacterial meningitis, addressing diagnosis and treatment. Methods: An integrative literature review was carried out, following the PICO strategy (population, intervention/exposure, comparator and outcome), with a search in databases such as PubMed and Portal Capes. Observational studies from the last 10 years related to the diagnosis and treatment of bacterial meningitis in neonates were included. Result: The main results highlighted the importance of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis in diagnosis, the appropriate choice of antibiotics such as ceftriaxone, and advanced diagnostic methods for early identification of the disease. Furthermore, infectious agents associated with meningitis and effective therapeutic strategies were discussed. Conclusion: A multidisciplinary approach, simple clinical indicators, CSF analysis and appropriate antibiotic treatment are crucial for an accurate diagnosis and effective management of neonatal bacterial meningitis. It is necessary to continue research and development of new technologies to improve the management of this critical condition, especially in regions with limited resources, aiming to improve clinical outcomes and quality of life for patients.

Urban nature-based solutions planning for biodiversity outcomes: human, ecological, and artificial intelligence perspectives

AbstractNature-based solutions (NBS) harness ecosystem services for urban enhancement, promoting biodiversity, habitat creation, and water management while improving human well-being. However, decision-making often favours specific NBS designs, leading to uneven benefits distribution. Whereas human-centric NBS design relies on convenience, financial sustainability, historical aspects, and amenity increase through NBS technical solutions, flora- and fauna-centric (or eco-centric) design targets spatial connectedness of blue-green spaces, increase in species richness, and habitat within urban centres. Both approaches can shape the urban biodiversity landscape, yet; they often clash around planning priorities. Recent advances in AI offer potential for AI-centric urban planning, though its role remains unclear. This study examines the interplay between biodiversity and NBS planning across human-, eco-, and AI-centric domains, aiming for balanced urban outcomes. We blended narrative, integrative, and systematic literature review and propose future steps for more balanced NBS development. The findings of this work suggest that AI presents an opportunity for a more balanced NBS design through its applications in climate change prediction, water management, and project visualisation. Incorporating AI into urban planning tools can expedite modelling process, improve stakeholder communication, and enhance project outcomes visualisation. By integrating human, eco, and AI-centric approaches, urban planners can foster resilience and sustainability in NBS implementation, ensuring equitable distribution of benefits across urban landscapes.

Introduction: Alzheimer's is a significant challenge for healthcare systems, due to the increasing global aging population, which requires a comprehensive and patient-centered approach. Objective: The research has the general objective of analyzing nursing care for patients with Alzheimer's in primary care, and the specific objectives of contextualizing Alzheimer's disease and its characteristics; describe the pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer's Disease; present the importance of the role of nursing professionals and what interventions are carried out. Methodology: This study is a systematic and integrative literature review, the search was carried out virtually from September 2023 to April 2014, in the databases: Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo), PUBMED (National Library of Medicine), Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS) and BDENF. Results: The 15 articles selected for results and discussion addressed the contextualization and characteristics of Alzheimer's disease, described the pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment and concluded by integrating nursing into primary care, in addition to realizing the importance of patient-family monitoring. nursing. Conclusion: During primary care, nursing collaboration is crucial to providing holistic, personalized care to individuals and families affected by this debilitating condition. Recognizing the importance of early diagnosis, education and continuous monitoring, it is clear that nurses play a central role in the comprehensive approach to Alzheimer's, standing out as agents of change and support amidst the growing challenges faced by this increasingly growing population. vulnerable.

The influence of linguistic profiling on perceived employability: a new application of the systems theory framework of career development

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to clarify the influence of linguistic profiling on perceived employability. In doing so, we recognize multiple factors that can contribute to this relationship. Using the systems theory framework (STF) of career development, we categorize these factors based on whether they primarily reside within the societal system, the organizational system, or the individual system. Subsequently, we construct and present an open systems model that depicts the influence of linguistic profiling on perceived employability in context with other societal, organizational and individual factors.Design/methodology/approachThe STF provides a theoretical perspective on how to contextualize linguistic profiling and perceived employability within the scope of career development. We employed an integrative literature review method to locate existing research studies that investigated the influences of linguistic profiling and perceived employability. The literature search process, coupled with inclusion and exclusion criteria, resulted in 46 publications retained for analysis.FindingsFindings provided evidence of language ideologies that contribute to linguistic profiling globally. Linguistic profiling usually results in reduced perceived employability. There was variation in the research findings based on the context of the research studies. The context consisted of the societal, organizational and individual systems in which the research study was conducted. Findings supported our construction of an open systems model of the influence of linguistic profiling on perceived employability, which is rooted in the STF.Originality/valueThis study highlights the negative influence of linguistic profiling on perceived employability. It also demonstrates how the STF can be used to contextualize the linguistic profiling problem within societal and organizational systems.

A History of International Engagement in the Council for Exceptional Children Since 1980. Part 1: Organizational Components

Abstract Is the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), arguably the largest professional organization in exceptional education in the world, international or not? What does it mean to be international? An integrative literature review of primary sources of CEC news articles, reports of initiatives and workgroups, and columns in CEC publications that provided records of the Council’s internationally related thinking and activities involving countries outside the United States and Canada was conducted to reconceptualize CEC’s international nature since 1980. In this article, we report the findings from these sources that provide evidence of international aspirations and activities at times for six organizational components of CEC—mission and vision, policy, units, committees, work groups, and membership. There were instances of international thinking and efforts in these components. Both are necessary for meaningful international engagement, as neither is sufficient on its own. Our results suggest, though, that each may have been wanting. Recommendations are provided on how CEC can increase its global engagement through these elements.

Through a comprehensive review, we shed light on the essential leadership skills necessary within the context of neoliberalism. By addressing these challenges head-on, leaders can navigate the neoliberal waters and build the capacities needed for successful instructional leadership in higher education.

L-PRF como alternativa para tratamento de Comunicações Bucossinusais: uma revisão integrativa

Oroantral communication is defined as a direct access between the sinus cavity and the oral cavity. This condition is often accidentally caused during the dental extraction of a tooth whose roots are closely associated with the floor of the maxillary sinus, in addition to oral pathologies and even traumas. The technique of using the L-PRF membrane associated with flaps is widely used for extensive communications and has several advantages. The present study aims to analyze the efficacy of L-PRF in the treatment of existing oroantral communications in the most current literature. An integrative literature review was conducted to list and analyze the efficacy of L-PRF in tissue healing when obtaining the closure of oroantral communications. Scientific articles from 2014 to 2023, published in full in Portuguese and English, were selected and excluded were literature reviews and systematic reviews, articles in languages other than Portuguese and English, repeated articles in the databases, and articles that deviated from the theme proposed in the guiding question chosen. The data search was conducted in Google Scholar, LILACS, and PubMed, through the combination, using the Boolean operator “AND,” of the descriptors in English: “Oroantral Communication,” “L-PRF,” “Maxillary Sinus.” A total of 205 articles were found, but only 9 satisfactorily met the listed criteria. After a careful analysis, it was observed that the authors suggest that the use of the L-PRF membrane insertion technique for tissue healing involved in oroantral communication associated with sutures or flaps for its closure is feasible, effective, and widely spread in modern Dentistry.
