Scenario-based training (SBT) environments are effective, carefully planned learning events that give trainees an opportunity to practice targeted skills in a variety of situations, while performance is monitored and assessed for feedback (Cannon-Bowers & Salas, 1998). However, SBT for teams can require a large number of instructors to man events, and can lead to high instructor workload. This paper describes a 5 year Science and Technology (S&T) effort that addressed challenges that instructors face in conducting SBT exercises in a team environment. We discuss the design of instructor operating systems (IOSs) that provides instructors with the ability to monitor scenarios, assess key performance indicators, and to remediate breakdowns in performance during team training. Further, we describe an effectiveness evaluation of the impact of an adaptive IOS on instructor performance and workload.
