TED Talks and entrepreneurial intention in higher education: A fsQCA approach

Higher education institutions are aware of the importance of entrepreneurship education in reflecting real-life scenarios and increasing students' professional opportunities. Universities attempt to nurture students' entrepreneurial skills and awaken their entrepreneurial intention through specific or transversal entrepreneurship courses in a wide variety of degree programs. By using active learning techniques, such as TED Talks, students can improve their entrepreneurial intention. However, the potential of TED Talks to stimulate students' entrepreneurial skills and intention has not yet been studied from a multicausal perspective. This study contributes to the entrepreneurship literature by describing an educational experience based on active learning at a Spanish university. TED Talks were introduced to stimulate entrepreneurial intention in undergraduate students (n = 25) and master's degree students (n = 32). The impact of the experience was assessed using fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA). Given this approach, no single characteristic was found to lead to high (or low) levels of entrepreneurial intention in students. Instead, combinations of factors were found to cause this outcome. The findings show different student profiles that lead to high and low entrepreneurial intention. The findings thus confirm the multicausal nature of entrepreneurship in higher education institutions.

Institutional entrepreneurship and digital transformation: The role of outsider CEOs

The widespread diffusion of digital technologies forces incumbent firms to drive their digital transformation. Digital transformation not only involves a change in strategy but also requires new institutional logics for firms helping to operate in digital business environments. Firms increasingly hire outsider CEOs to cope with this development, but the necessary institutional change questions whether outsider CEOs can indeed realize digital transformation. We draw on the institutional entrepreneurship perspective to make sense of the role of outsider CEOs in digital transformation. We theorize that digital transformation awareness stemming from prior experience with digital transformation enables outsider CEOs to act as institutional entrepreneurs and realize digital transformation. We further argue that outsider CEOs with digital transformation awareness particularly benefit firms facing abrupt rather than accumulative digital transformations. To test our hypotheses, we introduce a novel, machine-learning-based digital transformation measure. Panel data regressions provide support for our predictions. Our findings contribute to a more nuanced understanding of the role of outsider CEOs as change agents.

Collective institutional entrepreneurship for the EPSAS programme: The missing link

IMPACT Three categories of institutional entrepreneurs are potentially capable of accomplishing multi-level accounting change processes, such as the issuing of European Public Sector Accounting Standards (EPSAS): the supranational, national and subnational. This article shows that, if the mediating role of national institutional entrepreneurs at the interface between supranational and subnational institutional entrepreneurs is limited, international accounting harmonization halts. The lessons in this article will be of particular value to accounting standard-setters and policy-makers in the field of public sector accounting.

Generative Artificial Intelligence in Business: Towards a Strategic Human Resource Management Framework

AbstractAs businesses and society navigate the potentials of generative artificial intelligence (GAI), the integration of these technologies introduces unique challenges and opportunities for human resources, requiring a re‐evaluation of human resource management (HRM) frameworks. The existing frameworks may often fall short of capturing the novel attributes, complexities and impacts of GAI on workforce dynamics and organizational operations. This paper proposes a strategic HRM framework, underpinned by the theory of institutional entrepreneurship for sustainable organizations, for integrating GAI within HRM practices to boost operational efficiency, foster innovation and secure a competitive advantage through responsible practices and workforce development. Central to this framework is the alignment with existing business objectives, seizing opportunities, strategic resource assessment and orchestration, re‐institutionalization, realignment and embracing a culture of continuous learning and adaptation. This approach provides a detailed roadmap for organizations to navigate successfully the complexities of a GAI‐enhanced business environment. Additionally, this paper significantly contributes to the theoretical discourse by bridging the gap between HRM and GAI adoption, the proposed framework accounting for GAI–human capital symbiosis, setting the stage for future research to empirically test its applicability, explore its implications on HRM practices and understand its broader economic and societal consequences through diverse multi‐disciplinary and multi‐level research methodologies.

Entrepreneurship in Islamic Education Institutions: Pesantren Strategy in Responding to the Industrial Revolution 4.0

This study aims to explore the proactive steps of pesantren in improving the entrepreneurial skills of Santri to respond to the Industrial Revolution 4.0. The study, which was conducted at Pesantren Al-Mawadah Honggo Suco Kudus, used a case study approach with data collection techniques through observation, interviews, and document analysis. The collected data were analyzed using a qualitative approach with thematic analysis techniques. The results showed that Pesantren Al-Mawadah Honggo Suco Kudus has four excellent programs to support these goals. First, through training and workshops that focus on developing digital skills such as programming, graphic design, and social media management. Second, by strengthening technology-based education through curriculum relevant to Industry 4.0, such as artificial intelligence, data analysis, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Third, through collaboration with related companies and institutions to provide access to pesantren and students in understanding the latest industry needs and building networks that are useful in the business world. Fourth, by applying an experiential learning-oriented learning approach to teach students how to think creatively, innovatively, and adaptively. The challenges faced are the lack of understanding of entrepreneurial concepts and practices among pesantren teachers and managers as well as access to resources and capital to develop entrepreneurial activities. This research provides a foundation for the development of an entrepreneurship curriculum that is relevant and useful for Santri in welcoming industry 4.0.

INSTITUTIONAL ASPECTS OF TRANSFORMATION PROCESSES IN THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY

The article is devoted to the study of the impact of institutional aspects on the transformation of the hospitality industry in Ukraine. The object of the study is the transformation processes of the hospitality industry, which took place under the influence of institutional factors. The paper analyses a number of scientific works by foreign and domestic scholars on understanding the concepts of "institution", "institute", "institutional environment" and its importance in the development of the hospitality industry in general. Methodology. The aim of the study is to analyse the impact of institutional factors on the transformational processes of development of the hospitality industry in Ukraine at the present stage. It is proposed to consider the institutional environment as a set of formal and informal institutions that at different levels have different impacts on the formation of the institutional system of society. The comparative characteristics of formal and informal institutions were compiled in order to clearly distinguish their differences and apply them correctly in building an effective institutional policy for the hospitality industry. It is proved that although formal institutions are relatively stable, their formation and preservation should be based on their perception by people in society as a factor in effectively solving certain problems. It was determined that Ukraine, as a country in a period of crisis (direct military action), should seriously consider institutional factors as a source of future direct investment, and weak institutional policies will raise concerns about the possibility of transferring management practices, procedures, and methods from other countries. The authors compiled a scheme of influence of factors on the formation of the institutional environment of the country as a whole and the hospitality industry, including political, legislative, economic, socio-cultural and ethical factors of influence. The publication examines the mutual influence of the institutional environment and the organisation, which is based on institutional ties, institutional pressure and institutional entrepreneurship. It has been found that an effective institutional environment stimulates the development of the hospitality industry, and a good institutional structure characterised by a strong rule of law, control of corruption, freedom of expression, a stable political environment, better regulation and good governance can open a new path for hospitality services. Conclusion. The results of the study are a significant contribution to the qualitative formation of the institutional environment of the hospitality industry.

Circular entrepreneurial ecosystems: a Quintuple Helix Model approach

PurposeThe shift toward a circular economy (CE) represents a collaborative endeavor necessitating the presence of efficient frameworks, conducive contexts and a common comprehension. This research serves as a pivotal stride towards this goal, presenting an exclusive prospect for the investigation and fusion of these frameworks, with particular emphasis on the Quintuple Helix Model (5HM), into a unified theoretical framework that underscores the core principles of the CE. This study is centered on three pivotal questions aimed at decoding the CE transition in specific regional settings.Design/methodology/approachAdopting an abductive approach firmly anchored in a two-stage qualitative process, this study specifically merges the foundational principles from institutional theory, entrepreneurship literature and CE frameworks to provide insights into the dynamics of circular ecosystems, with a specific focus on the Huelva region in Spain.FindingsThe findings demonstrate significant potential in the CE, ranging from the integration of product and service systems to innovations in eco-industrial practices. Yet, a notable deficiency exists: the absence of institutional entrepreneurs, highlighting the essential role that universities can play. As recognized centers of innovation, universities are suggested to be key contributors to the transformation toward a CE, aligning with their societal and economic responsibilities.Practical implicationsThis study highlights the importance of managing relationships with entities like SMEs and policymakers or academia for effective CE adoption. Policymakers can refine strategies based on the research’s insights, while the impact of university-driven circular ecosystems on sustainable societies is another crucial area for research.Originality/valueThe sustainability models cited in CE literature may not be comprehensive enough to prevent problem shifting, and it can be argued that they lack a sound theoretical and conceptual basis. Furthermore, the connections between sustainability objectives and the three levels of the CE operating system remain vague. Additionally, there is insufficient information on how regions foster the involvement of the environment in fivefold helix cooperation and how this impacts the CE.

Activist entrepreneurship for a sustainable future: an integrative framework

With the growth of activism in our societies, research has begun to explore the possible links between activism and entrepreneurship. Three main streams of research - social entrepreneurship, institutional entrepreneurship, and sustainable entrepreneurship - have already approached the links between activism and entrepreneurship. Reinterpreting an emblematic case from each research stream through an activist lens allows us to identify previously untheorized elements. The result is an integrative framework for the phenomenon of activist entrepreneurship organized around three main components: 1) cause advocacy; 2) community generation; 3) boundless action. The framework provides a common reading grid for all phenomena combining activism and entrepreneurship.

Management of The Head of Madrasah Aliyah in Entrepreneurship Development

Entrepreneurship in madrasah educational institutions is a necessity that must be carried out to support quality improvement with independent financing. This research has two main objectives: firstly, how the school principal manages to develop entrepreneurship in his institution, and secondly, how the Madrasah principal organizes the organization and implementation of entrepreneurship. This type of research is quantitative, where the data is obtained through informants. The location of this research is two madrasas in Tulang Bawang Regency. The informants for this research came from both madrasahs, namely the head of the madrasah, the deputy head of the madrasah, the head of administration, and the community around the madrasah. Furthermore, the data used is primary data obtained directly from informants through interviews. Test the validity of the data using data triangulation techniques. Meanwhile, data analysis techniques include the degree of trust, transferability, dependability, and confirmability tests. The findings of this research show that the suitable abilities and knowledge of madrasah heads in entrepreneurship influence planning for future educational development. This is demonstrated in the creation of academic curricula. In MAN 1 and MAN 2 Tulang Bawang, all subjects must include entrepreneurship. Apart from that, the placement that will be responsible must be based on the area of skill.

Beyond social enterprise: Bringing the territory at the core

Over the last two decades, research on social enterprises has expanded significantly, with special focus on the creation and scaling up of these organizations. Yet, the question of how social enterprises mutates over time has been scarcely analyzed. Based on a single case study of the Archer Group located in Romans-sur-Isère (France), we wish to understand why and how a well-identified organizational form (a social enterprise) incorporates the territorial dimension to transform into a more non-mainstream form (i.e. a territory enterprise). We will examine both the ‘turning points’ (Abbott, 2001) in the evolution of the organizational form as well as the transformation processes implemented by an institutional entrepreneur to achieve these evolutions. Our analysis sheds light on how a social enterprise gradually transforms itself to better contribute to the sustainable development of its territory and the mobilization of local citizens. It also shows that a different form of local development 'by and for local people' is possible. This article highlights the crucial role of the territory in the strategy and objectives of social enterprises and contributes to the reflection on place sensitive research for social enterprises.

Neo-institutionalism in supply chain management: from supply chain susceptibility to supply chain resilience

Purpose Neo-institutional theories and their constructs have so far only received limited attention in supply chain management literature. As recent supply chain disruptions and their ripple effects affect actors on a broader institutional level, supply chains are confronted with multiple new and emerging, often conflicting, institutional demands. This study aims to unpack the notion of institutional complexity behind supply chain disruptions and present a novel institutional framework to lower supply chain susceptibility and increase supply chain resilience. Design/methodology/approach The authors identify the patterns of complexity that shape the supply chain susceptibility, namely, distance, diversity and ambiguity, and present three institutional responses to susceptibility to increase supply chain resilience, namely, institutional entrepreneurship, institutional alignment and institutional layering. Findings This paper analyses the current situational relevance to better understand the various and patterned ways how logics influence both supply chain susceptibility and the supply chain resilience. The authors derive six propositions on how complexity can be reduced for supply chain susceptibility and can be increased for supply chain resilience. Originality/value By expanding and extending research on institutional complexity to supply chains, the authors broaden how researchers in supply chain management view supply chain susceptibility, thereby providing managers with theory to think differently about supply chains and its resilience.

Multinational firms as emissaries of decent work: worker responses to progressive HRM in a foreign retailer in Japan

PurposeThe paper aims to provide an understanding of how the transfer of progressive human resource management (HRM) practices may or may fail to render multinational enterprises (MNEs) institutional entrepreneurs creating change in job quality and decent work to underprivileged workers in the low-pay retail sector in Japan.Design/methodology/approachThe paper draws on survey questionnaire data and interviews with workers and management in a foreign retailer in Japan.FindingsThe findings suggest that even where MNEs may provide some measurable material improvements in job quality, in this case equal pay for equal work, the total outcomes are nevertheless shaped by institutional context and constraints. In this case, the improvement in pay was intertwined with flexibility demands that were possible to meet for some workers but not others. In particular, women with care responsibilities and competing demands on their time were not able to experience “decent work” in the same way as others.Research limitations/implicationsThe study had a relatively low response rate, due to lack of discretion over time experienced by workers in Japan, as well as limited data on program outcomes, with interviews conducted with a small number of participants.Practical implicationsThe study suggests that spaces and opportunities exist for MNEs to diverge from dominant practices in given host country locations and exercise a level of agency as emissaries of decent work but successful outcomes require a very thorough understanding of individual worker experiences within the institutional constraints of given environments.Social implicationsThe study offers insights into the complexities of initiatives by MNEs to contribute to the provision of decent work, particularly for workers in underprivileged positions including women in low-pay sectors such as retail, as firm-level practices lead to variable outcomes when filtered through local institutions.Originality/valueThe study brings together a focus on firm-level practices that inform much of the international HRM and international management scholarship with an emphasis on the experiences of workers, which is pursued in the sociology of work, to investigate whether MNEs can be actors in the realising of the Sustainable Development Goals around decent work.

The Vision Management Mechanism in the Transformation of Entrepreneurial Universities from the Perspective of Stakeholders: A Case Study Based on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology

The entrepreneurial university is a novel model for the advancement of research universities, driven by knowledge to foster national and regional economic development, while establishing a new collaborative relationship between government, academia, and industry. In the era of the knowledge economy, transforming universities into entrepreneurial institutions not only meets societal and economic demands but also presents opportunities for their own growth. This research is based on stakeholder theory and takes “certain-anticipative-potential” as the analytical framework. Drawing upon stakeholder theory, this study examines the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as a case study using a single explanatory approach. Following the logic of “construct-practice-inspectconsensus” within vision management processes, this research analyzes and reveals the specific correlation between vision management and the transformation of entrepreneurial universities. Findings indicate that during this transformation process, there exists a non-linear relationship among four stages of vision management-construct, practice, inspect and consensus. Certain stakeholders play an influential role in shaping university visions through construct stage and inspect stage while both certain stakeholders and potential stakeholders collectively drive progress in practicing visions. Future research can further comprehend stakeholder interests through empirical investigations.

Problems and Perspectives for Social Entrepreneurship in Higher Education

This article examines the problem of social entrepreneurship education in higher education. Along with traditional entrepreneurs, it is of particular importance to create social entrepreneurs through collaboration between academia, social enterprises and business. The development of social entrepreneurship in higher education institutions in Bulgaria faces a number of problems, as well as prospects for its development. The purpose of this article is to identify the problems and outline the prospects for social entrepreneurship in higher education in Bulgaria. By undertaking the necessary activities in the direction of increasing social awareness, sustainability and social responsibility, universities can train socially oriented entrepreneurs to contribute their knowledge and abilities to the development and well-being of our country. The main research methods involved in the development are content analysis, method of analysis and synthesis, method of observation, intuitive and systematic approach.

From the results of this study, human resource management in education includes all policies, activities, and considerations aimed at utilizing human resources (in this case educators and training staff) to achieve goals. understand that this includes efforts. The goals and strategies of human resource development education in Islamic educational institutions are best achieved by developing a vision/mission, promoting innovation, and building an entrepreneurial culture.

Economic analysis of institutional factors influencing the entrepreneurial level of young adults in Poland. Evidence from conjoint experiment

PurposeThis article aims at contributing to the literature using conjoint experiment methods for political economic problems. The author measures the stated willingness of young adults to start an enterprise in hypothetical realities described by different levels of six institutional factors pertaining to the business environment.Design/methodology/approachThe author conducts the “forced-choice” conjoint experiment on a sample of 200 young Polish students. This analysis allows for the verification of the expectations concerning the differences in the respondents' stated preferences relating to the potential obstacles to their entrepreneurial inclinations. The author estimates the average marginal component effects (AMCEs) and the marginal means (MMs).FindingsEvidence is provided that the institutional factors are not similarly significant to the stated entrepreneurial preferences of Polish young adults. Legal certainty and economic freedom are the attributes of the most notable effect on respondents' feelings about perceived entrepreneurial barriers; however, the results vary across the subgroups.Practical implicationsThe study results provide a tentative perspective on the Polish young adults' feelings about institutions as a potential obstacle to their entrepreneurial inclinations. The employment of conjoint methodology lays the groundwork for scholars studying the entrepreneurial environment, legal institutions and current public mood of different social groups.Originality/valueThis study is a unique attempt to answer political economic questions concerning entrepreneurial institutions in Poland through the implementation of a comprehensive market research method. In addition, the author indicates a specific set of six institutional factors as well as define a distinct group of young adults.

Learning to relocalize: institutional entrepreneurs as transformative agents in public food services

ABSTRACT We explore purposive institutional change and the role of institutional entrepreneurs in initiating and driving relational learning processes. Supplementing new institutionalist theory with an institutional learning lens and using a longitudinal set of rich qualitative interview and observation data, we investigate how institutional entrepreneurs engage in transformational work to effectuate change in dominant institutional logics, thus transforming the institutional field. We propose that institutional entrepreneurs, by skilfully utilizing discursive and material practices to catalyze reciprocal learning processes, can introduce a new institutional logic and ensure its adoption and internalization by pivotal actors and stakeholders. We illustrate these dynamics using a municipality situated in Northern Finland as an example. The municipality has successfully managed to transform its food services as part of efforts to develop more sustainable regional economies and communities. It offers a rare case of successful purposive institutional change and an interesting best practice example both nationally and internationally.

INTRODUCTION INTO ELECTRONIC COMMERCE ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN THE UNIVERSITY COURSE USING VIRTUAL ENTERPRISES

Entrepreneurship education helps to promote the employment of university graduates and it might be implemented in various fields of business including e-commerce. It may be appropriate for future entrepreneurs in e-commerce to experience the development and management of an enterprise in a virtual form as part of their education. This article aims to demonstrate how are virtual enterprises used for instructional reasons in the university entrepreneurial course. This particular course allows its participants to experience the first phase of the existence of their fictitious e-commerce enterprises. Students establish and manage virtual limited liability businesses operating online stores. Electronic banking software allows the settlement of payments related to their e-commerce business activities. Pre-course and post-course surveys were conducted to investigate changes in students’ self-reported evaluation between these two moments. Results show significant improvements in all investigated entrepreneurial aspects of the course suggesting that the given approach of using virtual enterprises for entrepreneurship education positively impacts the entrepreneurial skills, knowledge, and experience of the course participants. This suggests that this design of using virtual enterprises can be a suitable way of implementation in the educational process of entrepreneurship in higher education institutions.

Capacity Building Needs for Manual and Computer Assisted Teaching of Pattern Drafting for Entrepreneurship in Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria

This study investigated the capacity building needs for manual and computer assisted teaching of pattern drafting for entrepreneurship in tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The study was conducted and guided by two research questions and two hypotheses. This study adopted an ex-post facto research design. The population for the study consisted of 131 Home Economics lecturers from the Universities, Polytechnic, and Colleges of Education in South East Nigeria. The entire population was studied because of its manageable size, hence there was no sampling. The results of this study showed that the Home Economics lecturers are competent in drafting patterns using manual method. Technical skills required for lecturers of Home Economics to advance from manual to computer-assisted teaching of pattern drafting were identified. They include ability to grade patterns, ability to use software packages, and ability to discuss procedures of pattern drafting among others. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that computer assisted teaching of pattern drafting should be incorporated and applied by Home Economics lecturers to ensure that students acquire technical skills that will enable them to enter into entrepreneurship.
