An updated checklist of Endomychidae and Anamorphidae (Coleoptera: Coccinelloidea) from El Salvador, with additional new records from the Neotropical region

The checklist of the species of fungus beetle families Endomychidae and Anamorphidae from El Salvador is updated. Only six species of Endomychidae and one Anamorphidae have been previously recorded from the country, with specific localities reported only for two of them. The study of specimens collected in El Salvador over 60 years ago by Jan and Bohumila Bechyné and held in the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, Brussels, allowed us to have a better idea on the diversity and distribution of these beetles in the country. Eight species of Endomychidae and one of Anamorphidae arerep orted here, including three first records for El Salvador: Anidrytus guatemalae Arrow, Epipocus bifidus Gerstaecker andStenotarsus ovalis Arrow. Additionally, first records for species of Endomychidae from countries of the Neotropical region are provided: Anidrytus batesi Strohecker from Peru, A. ovatulus Gerstaecker from Guyana, Ephebus hirtulus Stroheckerfrom Paraguay, Epopterus vacuus Gerstaecker from Costa Rica and Acinaces unicolor Tomaszewska from Peru.

Chemical and palaeoentomological evidence of a relationship between early Eocene Belgian and Oise (France) ambers

Of the early Eocene amber deposits known across the world, Belgian amber has been mostly absent from the relevant literature. We reinvestigated amber held in the palaeobotanical collection of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, Brussels, which derived from three localities in Belgium that originated from two geographical areas (Leval-Trahegnies and Orp-le-Grand). Using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy we show the close chemical relationship of Belgian amber to the early Eocene Oise amber from the Paris Basin, and highlight the potential effect of weathering on the amber chemistry. The amber derives from a very similar botanical source as the Oise amber (Combretaceae or Leguminosae-Caesalpinioideae), but from different coeval basins. The two Leval-Trahegnies localities provided amber that exhibit different stages of weathering (heavily fissured and crazed, darkened) and lacking any inclusions. The Orp-le-Grand locality provided the least weathered amber, with one amber piece containing two inclusions: a mite and a new genus and species of hemipteran (Cativolcus uebruum gen. et sp. nov.), and a second one that preserved the impression of insect wings pressed into the surface.

To new heights by flying low: comparison of aircraft vertical NO2 profiles to model simulations and implications for TROPOMI NO2 retrievals

Abstract. The sensitivity of satellites to air pollution close to the sea surface is decreased by the scattering of light in the atmosphere and low sea surface albedo. To reliably retrieve tropospheric nitrogen dioxide (NO2) columns using the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI), it is therefore necessary to have good a priori knowledge of the vertical distribution of NO2. In this study, we use an aircraft of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences equipped with a sniffer sensor system to measure NOx (= NO + NO2), CO2 and SO2. This instrumentation enabled us to evaluate vertical profile shapes from several chemical transport models and to validate TROPOMI tropospheric NO2 columns over the polluted North Sea in the summer of 2021. The aircraft sensor observes multiple clear signatures of ship plumes from seconds after emission to multiple kilometers downwind. Besides that, our results show that the chemical transport model Transport Model 5, Massively Parallel version (TM5-MP), which is used in the retrieval of the operational TROPOMI NO2 data, tends to underestimate surface level pollution – especially under conditions without land outflow – while overestimating NO2 at higher levels over the study region. The higher horizontal resolution in the regional CAMS (Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service) ensemble mean and the LOTOS-EUROS (Long Term Ozone Simulation European Operational Smog) model improves the surface level pollution estimates. However, the models still systematically overestimate NO2 levels at higher altitudes, indicating exaggerated vertical mixing and overall too much NO2 in the models over the North Sea. When replacing the TM5 a priori NO2 profiles with the aircraft-measured NO2 profiles in the air mass factor (AMF) calculation, we find smaller recalculated AMFs. Subsequently, the retrieved NO2 columns increase by 20 %, indicating a significant negative bias in the operational TROPOMI NO2 data product (up to v2.3.1) over the North Sea. This negative bias has important implications for estimating emissions over the sea. While TROPOMI NO2 negative biases caused by the TM5 a priori profiles have also been reported over land, the reduced vertical mixing and smaller surface albedo over sea make this issue especially relevant over sea and coastal regions.

On the first Belgian record of the Eifelian (Middle Devonian) ammonoid cephalopod Subanarcestes (Suborder Anarcestina)

Ammonoid cephalopods are extremely rare in the Lower and Middle Devonian sedimentary rocks of Belgium, which contrasts with the neighboring sedimentary basins. However, searches in old collections and recent collecting efforts show that ammonoids do occur in these beds in Belgium, which allows to enlarge our knowledge of Lower and Middle Devonian ammonoid occurrences. Here, a record of the Eifelian (Middle Devonian) anarcestid ammonoid genus Subanarcestes is described for the first time from Belgium based on a specimen from the Jemelle Formation (Chavées Member). This specimen was collected more than a century ago by Eugène Maillieux at Trou Bodet near Couvin. It laid unrecognized as an ammonoid cephalopod for many decades in the collections of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, while being previously identified as Cryptoceras or ‘Nautilus’ fossil, which if correct, constituted Belgium’s oldest Nautilida fossil. Micro-CT imaging greatly helped in the taxonomic assignment of the specimen.

The article considers the need for seasonal autumn and winter excursions in botany, preceding the summer and spring practices, which are included in the introductory practice for bachelors of biology (06.03.01) of the Institute of Natural Sciences and Biotechnology of OSU named after I.S. Turgenev. Autumn and winter excursions can effectively prepare freshmen for mastering the theoretical course of botany of the second semester, realize the importance of studying the seasonal dynamics of plant life processes, and instill useful skills necessary for future professional activities.

The Role of Belgian Airborne Sniffer Measurements in the MARPOL Annex VI Enforcement Chain

The Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences launched its airborne sniffer program in 2015 whereby a custom-built sniffer sensor was installed onboard the Belgian coastguard aircraft enabling the measurement of SO2 and NOx emitted by ocean-going vessels (OGVs). The data gathered on non-compliant OGVs were subsequently sent to port inspection authorities, who were then able to trigger inspections more rapidly than had they not had the data from the aircraft. This study reveals the added value of airborne alerts on port inspection effectiveness, a subject that had not been previously documented. This article demonstrates that airborne alerts have not only led to increased sanctions but have also drastically improved the efficiency of port inspection authorities, leading to a 50% reduction in the enforcement cost per confirmed violation. Port inspection authorities were able to follow up on 46% of the generated Fuel Sulphur Content (FSC) alerts. Of the alerts that were followed up, 43% were confirmed as non-compliant after inspection. This means that 20% of the total number of generated airborne alerts, which includes those that were not able to be followed up, met conditions for legal sanctioning. In contrast, for NOx alerts, only limited follow-ups were conducted by port inspection authorities. None of the alerts were confirmed with those inspections, mainly due to the lack of inspection mechanisms for real-world NOx emissions under IMO and EU regulations. In addition, for this study, a large-scale remote FSC measurement validation analysis was conducted for the first time, comparing airborne FSC measurements and FSC reference data. In order to obtain FSC reference data, onboard measurements from exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCSs) were collected, together with fuel samples from Belgian port inspection authorities. The validation analysis revealed that the empiric deviation in the airborne FSC measurements with the FSC reference data was 9%, which was significantly lower than the 25% uncertainty used in the reporting of the alerts. This study helps pave the way for an increased role of airborne monitoring in the MARPOL Annex VI enforcement chain.

Checklist of Ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) Species from Nyungwe Tropical Rain Forest, South-Western Rwanda

Tropical rain forests are inhabited by a wide range of plant and animal diversity. However, little is known about the diversity of ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) species in these areas. To fill the gap, a study has been conducted in seven sites inside Nyungwe National Park, a tropical rain forest located in South-Western Rwanda. Data have been collected in October 2021 through a quick sampling using pitfall traps, arboreal traps, baiting, Winklers, and hand searching of nests in leaf-litter, soil, rotten and fallen wood, and under stones. Collected ant specimens have been identified to subfamily, genus and species levels by using the identification keys. Names of species have been confirmed after comparing the findings with the specimens housed at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Science (Brussels, Belgium) and at Kiko Gomez's personal collection (Barcelona, Spain). A total of 7 subfamilies, 28 genera and 74 species were sampled. The subfamily Myrmicicnae had more genera and species compared with other subfamilies. Further, 9 genera and 43 species were collected in Rwanda for the first time, while 13 species were potentially undescribed ant pecies. High number of species has been sampled in the sites located in secondary forest at Karamba (53 species) and Pindura (33 species). We recommend intensive sampling in other locations of Nyungwe tropical rainforest and in the rest of Rwanda mountain tropical rain forests to get a clear view on the diversity of ant species in Rwanda.

Rediscovery of the Mathieu collection of Carboniferous (Pennsylvanian)–Permian (Cisuralian) arthropods from the Kaiping Coalfield (northeastern China)

Numerous arthropods (e.g. branchiopods, insects) collected during the first half of the 20th century by F.-F. Mathieu within the Pennsylvanian–Cisuralian (Moscovian–Asselian) succession of the Zhaogezhuang colliery (Hebei Province, China), romanised notably as Chao Ko Chwang, or Chaokochuang, in the literature, have been recently located in the palaeontological collections of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (Brussels). This historical material from one of the classic localities of the Kaiping Coalfield includes a large number of wings of stem-Dictyoptera, mainly from the Tangshan Formation and to a lesser extent from the Kaiping and Zhaogezhuang formations. The exceptional richness in insects of a particular horizon developed within the Moscovian part of the Tangshan Formation was already pointed out at the end of the 1920s by the French palaeoentomologist P. Pruvost, who provided the first account on the arthropods of Mathieu’s collection from the Kaiping Coalfield. This singular Dictyoptera material was later studied by D. Laurentiaux in his unpublished Ph.D. thesis. In order to promote the revision of Mathieu’s collection by specialists, we provide here a detailed scientific background and re-illustrate the arachnids (and formerly alleged ones: (Poliochera vel Curculioides) [sic] pustulatus Laurentiaux-Vieira & Laurentiaux), branchiopods (Lioestheria? mathieui (Pruvost)), and insects from the Zhaogezhuang colliery, notably using the Reflectance Transformation Imaging methodology.

Инструментарий оценки универсальных компетенций (soft skills) у студентов педагогического вуза

As science and technology develops rapidly and the knowledge gained over the years of study devalues equally rapidly, a university should not only provide students with specific, highly professional knowledge and skills, but also develop universal competencies (soft skills), which include the ability to self-study, self-development, communication and cooperation, creativity, critical thinking and others. These are the skills that are increasingly valuable and will be more valuable in the future for the personal and professional success of a young specialist demanded by an employer. In the absence of unified and validated methods for diagnosing universal competencies, and with the uncertainty and inconsistency relating to the basic set of soft skills required for a young specialist at the start of his/her professional career, difficulties arise in organizing the educational process in high education to integrate the development of hard and soft skills. The aim of the study was to develop a toolkit for assessing and monitoring the level of development of universal competencies in students of a pedagogical university. The proposed toolkit was tested at the Institute of Natural Science and Sports Technologies of the Moscow City University. It made it possible to identify strengths and weaknesses in the educational process, acting as a sensitive diagnostic tool and facilitating the choice of a strategy aimed at increasing its effectiveness for developing students’ universal competencies. The proposed approach is universal and can be used in different contexts.

Контроль течений на поверхности прибрежных морских акваторий дистанционными методами

Object and purpose of research. The compare analysis carried out on the vorticies structure optical satellite pictures observation of the sea surface and the velocities field obtained by the ground HF Doppler radar. The purpose of this research is estimation of the possibility on fast monitoring feasibility assessment for the changes in littoral waters dynamics through joint application of satellite surveillance, radar probing of sea currents, wind data and numerical simulation of water circulation in the area under investigation. Materials and methods. The Sea surface observation data obtained by the satellites Sentinel 1 and 2 and by the coastal Doppler HF radar Sea Sonde in the South-east Black Sea area are analyzing. The additional data on the satellite observation of this area and on the wind condition is used from LANCE processing system [9, 10] and reanalysis NCEP/NCAR [11, 12]. The comparative analysis is carried out on the large vertical structures (LVS) establishing in the research coastal area. The numerical modeling of the water mass circulation in this area is carried out by the software package COHERENS (Belgian Institute of Natural Science) to investigate the role of the wind conditions at LVS appearance in the research area. Main results. The LVS in the vicinity of Sea coast line could be generated, as satellites observations demonstrated, by the vortices arrived along the coast line from the east-south direction in accordance with the Black Sea general circulation flow. Such vortices could be induced by the bottom roughness, rivers discharges and another local sources. Another LVS source could be connected with the wind impact in some affordable direction as demonstrated by the numerical modeling of the coastal water circulation. The continuous currents measurements at the Sea surface by Doppler HF coastal Radar supply the valuable data for further details on the space –time variation of LVS parameters and operational forecast of the hydrology regime in the aquatic areas. The operative numerical modelling of the wind impact to the surface currents structures formation provides the efficient estimation of the local large vorticity structure appearance in the research area. Conclusion. Satellite radar and optical observation provide the large scale control on the Sea surface dynamics conditions, but that is limited by relatively long interval between satellite tracks over the region of interest and do not acquire optical data at the cloud cover. The additional data could be operative obtain from the open internet resource in satellite optical, radar and meteorological data (LANCE, NCEP/NCAR), to get the more details development of the Sea surface dynamics. Sub-satellite Sea currents measurements by HF Doppler radar are useful for the reliable interpretation of satellite pictures and for the proper forecast of the aquatic area dynamics. Operative numerical modelling of the Sea coastal water circulation in accordance with variable meteo data combining with dynamic processes remote measurements could be efficient for the forecast of the environment parameters variation due the water mass transfer. In general the presented results demonstrates the combined application possibilities of the satellite observations, coastal Doppler radar measurements, internet data and operative numerical modelling for operational oceanographic and ecological monitoring of Sea coastal areas with heavy pollution load.

Le Moustier 1 Neandertal – The discovery of two new sets of casts, 3D reconstruction and comparison with original fossils

The postcranial skeleton of the Le Moustier 1 Neandertal was severely damaged and burnt at the end of the Second World War. A series of plaster casts were realized on the skeleton before it was destroyed. Five casts are already known to be in existence. This study brings to light two more sets of casts which were recently discovered in Belgium. One set is from the Louis Deroubaix Museum (LDM) and the other set is from the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (RBINS). The casts at the LDM were processed by Computed Tomography and three-dimensional models were produced. Measurements were taken both virtually and physically on all available postcranial bones from both LDM and RBINS casts. These measurements were then compared with previously published measurements taken on the original bones and the other available casts. There were no statistical differences between measurements on the original fossils and other existing casts and the physical and digitised casts from LDM and RBINS. The discovery of these new Le Moustier 1 casts is interesting because the original bones of the Neandertal juvenile Le Moustier 1 were destroyed and pre-adolescent Neandertals are not frequently found in the paleoanthropological record. Virtual copies of these casts are now freely available to other researchers and the public. • The fossils of the Le Moustier 1 Neandertal were destroyed during the Second World War. • A series of plaster casts were realised on the skeleton before it was destroyed. • Two new sets of casts were recently discovered in Belgium. • There are no differences between original fossils and casts (physical and digitised). • Virtual copies of a set of these casts are now freely available to the public.

CONTINUOUS ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AND EDUCATION: FROM SCHOOL PUPIL TO STUDENT

The problem of ensuring continuous environmental education and education on the way from schoolchildren to students is revealed by the example of the work of teachers of the Department of Ecology and Nature Management of the Institute of Natural Sciences of the Udmurt State University.

Innovation and changes in education management

This article examines the relevance of modernization of today`s education, in particular, the reform of activities in the management of educational organizations. Modernization of management of educational organizations involves the introduction of innovative approaches in the management of educational organizations. It was revealed that one of the priority areas that characterize the activities of modern educational institutions is the transformation of its management cycle. As one of the effective management methods, in contrast to the existing traditional vertical command-administrative system, is considered a horizontal-cyclical organizational structure (HCOS). This transformation has aimed to the implementation of decentralized coordination of the actions of the relevant organizational units (the formed departments) in the process of performing common tasks. The presented work will investigate the implementation of HCOS on the example of the Institute of Natural sciences and geography of the Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University.

Kaersutitis in Azov Area Rocks (Ukrainian Shield): Petrological Aspect

The paper presents the results of new studies of kaersutites from lamprophyres of the Pokrovo-Kyriivo massif (PKM) of the Azov area (Ukrainian Shield). The comparison of mineralogical-petrographic and chemical features of kaersutites of lamprophyres with those of other dyke (microgabroid) and plutonic (pyroxenite) rocks of PKM is carried out and also, with this mineral from the camptonites of the Khlibodar quarry and the pyroxenites of the Chomutov massif. The paper presents the results of new studies of kaersutites from lamprophyres of the Pokrovo-Kyriivo massif (PKM) of the Azov area (Ukrainian Shield). The comparison of mineralogical-petrographic and chemical features of kaersutites of lamprophyres with those of other dyke (microgabroid) and plutonic (pyroxenite) rocks of PKM is carried out and also, with this mineral from the camptonites of the Khlibodar quarry and the pyroxenites of the Chomutov massif. The crystal chemical characteristics of the studied kaersutites were compared with those of other amphiboles in the Azov area. According to the chemical composition of kaersutites, the conditions of kaersutite formation in the mafic rocks of the Azov area region were estimated. Microprobe studies of the chemical composition of kaersutites from kaersutite lamprophyres were performed on JXA- 8520F (JEOL) X-ray microanalyzer equipped with five wave dispersion spectrometers (WDS) at the Institute of Natural Sciences of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (Bysterka Branch). The main characteristics of the chemical composition of kaersutite from kaersutite lamprophyres of PKM are low content of TiO2 (0.5-0.68 f.o.) and Al2O3 (up to 11.4%). Due to the low Al2O3 content, they are similar to kaersutites from afir gabroid and pyroxenite PKM. Kaersutites from other rocks of the Azov area are characterized by a higher content of Al2O3 (more than 12.3%, more often — 13%). The sample of kaersutites from PKM lamprophyres is not homogeneous, which indicates fluctuations in the conditions of rock formation. Most of the studied kaersutites of the Azov area are characterized by #Mg higher than 0.55. The exception is the measured ferrokaersutite from Hlibodarivka camptonite megacrysts (# Mg = 0.43). The vast majority of Azov area kaersutites have a high alkali content (more than 3%). According to their crystal chemical characteristics, kaersutites of the Azov area region differ significantly from other amphiboles of the district. The most highly baric are ferrokaersutites from Hlibodarivka camptonite megacrysts and kaersutite from porphyry amphibole-titanomagnetite microgabrroid PKM. The formation of kaersutite from the mafiс rocks of the Azov area corresponds to the conditions of high oxygen fugacity. Ferrokaersutite from Hlibodarivka camptonite was formed under conditions of medium oxygen fugacity. Colección de Mamíferos “Alberto Cadena García” Instituto de Ciencias Naturales, Universidad Nacional de Colombia (ICN)

La Colección de Mamíferos “Alberto Cadena García” del Instituto de Ciencias Naturales, Universidad Nacional de Colombia (ICN) ha aportado al conocimiento de los mamíferos en Colombia desde 1959. Con aproximadamente 27.600 especímenes para el año 2020, incluye todos los órdenes de mamíferos reportados para el Colombia y registros de todos los departamentos. Esta colección alberga especímenes de cerca del 80 % de las especies de mamíferos de Colombia. Esta colección contiene material tipo de 21 taxones y tiene disponible la información de sus especímenes en línea. Además de sus actividades de docencia, cuenta con otras colecciones que incluyen huellas, tejidos y registros fotográficos, los cuales tienen continuo crecimiento a partir de salidas de campo de docencia, trabajos de grado, tesis, proyectos de investigación y el depósito de material de entidades externas. Los especímenes de la colección han aportado a más de 90 publicaciones científicas en los últimos 10 años, más de 150 tesis y trabajos de grado de estudiantes de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia.

Systematics and diversity of the giant soft-shelled turtles (Cryptodira, Trionychidae) from the earliest Eocene of Belgium

In 1909, the famous paleontologist Louis Dollo identified two putative new species of giant soft-shelled turtles from the lowest Eocene record of Belgium, ‘ Trionyx erquelinnensis ’ and ‘ Trionyx levalensis ’, from Erquelinnes and Leval, respectively. However, these proposals did not meet the requirements of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, so they were considered as nomina nuda . The information on these specimens or about any other specimen of this lineage of giant turtles from the Belgian record is currently extremely limited. Relatively scarce material from giant trionychids has been described for the lower Eocene record of other European regions. Considering the available information, all the European material has recently been recognized as belonging to the genus Axestemys , which has a North American origin, and possibly attributable to a single species, Axestemys vittata , which currently lacks a diagnosis. Numerous and well-preserved Belgian specimens are deposited in the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences. In addition to the cited individuals from Erquelinnes and Leval, additional specimens from both localities, as well as others from Orp-le-Grand, are part of this collection. These specimens, found between the decades of 1910 and 1930, have been recently restored, and their study is carried out here. The presence of Axestemys vittata in Belgium (in Leval and Orp-le-Grand) is confirmed. Knowledge about this species is significantly improved, and a diagnosis is proposed. However, the hypothesis proposed by Dollo is here confirmed, this species being not the only identified in the Belgian record. So, Axestemys erquelinnensis nov. sp. is defined based on the carapace from Erquelinnes known by Dollo, suggesting that the genus probably reached Europe during the Paleocene Eocene Thermal Maximum.

Addendum to Zootaxa 4683 (4): Popillia biguttata (Wiedemann in Wiedemann Germar, 1821) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae) established on New Guinea? With an illustrated key to Sundaland Popillia Dejean species.

In our recent publication (Telnov Zorn 2019) we overlooked and did not include Popillia migliaccioi Sabatinelli, 1996, described from "Java", in our checklist and key of Sundaland Popillia species. However, the examination of the holotype of this species deposited in the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle, Geneva, Switzerland (Figs. 1-8) revealed that Popillia migliaccioi is in fact an Afrotropical species, which was already described under the name Popillia maynei Ohaus, 1914. It is obvious that the specimen studied and described by Sabatinelli (1996) is mislabelled and is not from Java (Fig. 8). Unfortunately, the type material of P. maynei, which is housed in the Museum für Naturkunde, Berlin, Germany, is on loan indefinitely and was not available for our study (Bernd Jäger, personal communication). However, the original description of P. maynei and the aedeagus as originally figured by Ohaus (1914) (Fig. 9) match habitus and aedeagus of the P. migliaccioi holotype perfectly (Figs. 4-6). Habitus photographs of an additional comparative specimen from Togo (Kloto, III.2015, Don P. Léonard, deposited in the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, Brussels, Belgium) are provided for comparison in figs. 10 and 11.

Romeu Beltrão e o Boletim do Instituto de Ciências Naturais

The Bulletin of the Institute of Natural Sciences of the Federal University of Santa Maria was a scientific journal, pub lished between 1962 and 1968. It represented a vehicle for research carried out at the Institute of Natural Sciences of the newly created Federal University of Santa Maria. The articles published addressed mainly the phytogeography and paleontology of the region. The main contributor and mentor of the journal was Prof. Romeu Beltrão, man of multiple interests. He was a doctor, historian, high school teacher, professor, writer, botanist, paleontologist. The pioneering "Bulletin" is discussed within the evolution of research and pos-graduate studies at the university in which it arises. We also discussed the potential of this material to address the Nature of Science, and how scientific development is tied to the social and historical conditions in which it is embedded.
