Grid-Characteristic Method for Calculation of Discontinuous Non-Steady Flows of a Multicomponent Reacting Gas in Channels

This paper is devoted to the description of computational algorithms for modeling quasi-one-dimensional non-steady flows of a multicomponent reacting gas. The particularity of the developed modeling technique is that the paths of strong and weak discontinuities are mobile computational nodes, and the parameters for them are calculated using special algorithms. A set of programs has been developed, which can be used to solve the problems of the reacting gas dynamics that are of applied importance, as well as serve as an illustrator for physical gas dynamics training courses. The paper provides the results of the numerical modeling of the supersonic flow in a flat channel simulating the operation of experimental facilities of the Institute for Problems in Mechanics and the Institute of Physics and Technology. A satisfactory correlation between the calculated and experimental data has been obtained.

Investigation of Heat Transfer Regimes in Subsonic Dissociated-Nitrogen Jets of a High-Frequency Induction Plasmatron under Additional Surface Heating by Laser Radiation

The heat transfer to a cylindrical water-cooled copper model was experimentally investigated in an induction VGU-4 high-frequency (HF) plasmatron of the Institute for Problems in Mechanics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The model, 30 mm in diameter, equipped with a calorimetric transducer with a heat-adsorbing graphite surface, 13.8 mm in diameter, was exposed to the surface heating in the combined regime by nitrogen plasma and laser radiation and in the cases of the heating with only laser radiation or a nitrogen plasma jet. The experiments in the HF-plasmatron jets were performed at the pressure in the setup low-pressure chamber p = 1 × 104 Pa, nitrogen mass flow rate G = 2.4 g/s, and the plasmatron HF-generator anode power Na.p. = 22 kW. It is established that in the chosen experimental regimes the dissociated-nitrogen jet and the high-frequency induction discharge do not produce a considerable effect on the laser beam passing through them. The values of the heat flux density are obtained as functions of the laser radiation power delivered. The subsonic nitrogen plasma flow in the quartz discharge channel and in the low-pressure chamber of the VGU-4 setup is numerically modeled under the experimental conditions basing on the solution of the complete Navier–Stokes equations using the Patankar–Spalding method.

Analysis of changes in the internal structure of low-permeability reservoir rocks by means of computed tomography after implementation of the directional unloading method

The article presents the results of comprehensive studies of changes in the internal structure and evolution of filtration properties of low-permeability rocks of the Astrakhan gas-condensate field when implementing the method of increasing well productivity – the directional unloading method. Physical modeling of the deformation and filtration processes on the unique Triaxial Independent Load Test System of the Institute for Problems in Mechanics of the Russian Academy of Sciences was carried out. A 3D scan of rocks after testing was performed using a ProCon CT-MINI high-resolution X-ray tomograph in order to analyze changes in the internal structure. A digital model of the rock was obtained, and numerical simulation of filtration flow in GeoDict software based on the results of microtomography scanning was performed. Velocity fields and permeability values for different computational models and computation optimization methods are calculated. The results obtained in different filtration models are compared with the laboratory measured value of permeability. The main differences in approaches to numerical estimation of rock permeability are described, and conclusions about the applicability of the modeling techniques used are made. The research results allow us to conclude that the directional unloading method can be successfully applied to the conditions of the Astrakhan gas-condensate field, allowing to significantly improve filtration properties of rocks in the vicinity of the well.

Tensor compaction of porous rocks: theory and experimental verification

Compaction in sedimentary basins has been traditionally regarded as a one-dimensional process that ignores inelastic deformation in directions orthogonal to the active load. This study presents new experiments with sandstone demonstrating the role of three-dimensional inelastic compaction in cyclic true triaxial compression. The experiments were carried out on the basis of a triaxial independent loading test system in the Laboratory of Geomechanics of the Ishlinsky Institute for Problems in Mechanics of the Russian Academy of Science. The elastic moduli of the material were estimated from the stress-strain curves and the elastic deformations of the sample in each of the three directions were determined. Subtracting the elastic component from the total deformation allowed to show that inelastic compaction of the sandstone is observed in the direction of active loading, whereas in the orthogonal directions there is a expansion of the material. To describe the three-dimensional nature of the compaction, a generalization of Athy law to the tensor case is proposed, taking into account the role of the stress deviator. The compaction tensor and the kinetic equation to describe the evolution of inelastic deformation, starting from the moment of the load application are introduced. On the basis of experiments on cyclic multiaxial compression of sandstone, the identification and verification of the constructed model of tensor compaction were carried out. The possibility of not only qualitative, but also quantitative description of changes in inelastic deformation under complex cyclic triaxial compression is shown.

Grigory Barenblatt devoted his scientific life to the analysis of difficult and important problems in mechanics: turbulence, including turbulence in the oceans and the atmosphere and in polymeric fluids, fracture, fatigue and damage accumulation in solids, flow in porous media, and combustion. He made use of sophisticated and innovative mathematical tools that he himself developed with his collaborators: in particular, similarity, scaling methods and intermediate asymptotics. During the years up to the dissolution of the USSR, he held senior positions in the Institute of Petroleum, the Institute for Problems in Mechanics and the Institute of Oceanology, all institutes of the USSR Academy of Sciences, and the Department of Plasticity at the Institute of Mechanics, Lomonosov Moscow State University. In 1992 he was appointed the first G. I. Taylor Professor of Fluid Mechanics at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, University of Cambridge, and then in 1996, he was appointed Professor in Residence, Department of Mathematics, University of California at Berkeley. His work has garnered many prestigious awards and world-wide recognition.

Revisiting the need to combine educational and scientific-research processes in teaching CFD modelling to students

Using the example of many years of experience in cooperation between Institute No. 8 “Information Technologies and Applied Mathematics” of the Moscow Aviation Institute and Ishlinsky Institute for Problems in Mechanics of RAS points out the need for cooperation between the university and specialists of academic institutions in the preparation of highly qualified specialists in the field of CFD, stages of training, examples of qualification work and the use of software CFD products for training are presented. The difficulties of teaching CFD modeling are discussed, achievements and examples of solving the problems of hydrodynamics and heat and mass transfer by students of the Moscow Aviation Institute are given.

Physical modeling of deformation and filtration processes in low-permeability reservoir rocks when implementing the directional unloading method

This article describes the results of physical modeling of deformation and filtration processes in low-permeability reservoir rocks of the Achimov deposits of the Urengoy gas condensate field. The experiments were carried out on a unique true Triaxial Independent Loading Test System (TILTS) of the Institute for Problems in Mechanics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The effect of the non-uniform triaxial stress state on the character of deformation and filtration processes in rocks was studied. Real stresses that occur in the bottomhole formation zone when the pressure in the well decreases were created in the rock specimens. Experiments were carried out to simulate the stress state at the walls of the open hole and at the tip of the perforation hole. The geomechanical approach is shown to be promising for creating ways to improve the quality of wells; in particular, the adaptation of the directional unloading method for the conditions of a given reservoir is considered. These studies are essential both in fundamental scientific and practical terms to substantiate technological solutions in the development of fields with low-permeability reservoirs.

The Kaiser Effect under Multiaxial Nonproportional Compression of Sandstone

The regularities of deformation and fracture of sandstone under nonproportional biaxial and triaxial cyclic compression accompanied by the rotation of the Lame ellipsoid and in situ continuous detection of acoustic emission are investigated experimentally on the “Triaxial Independent Loading Test System” at the Ishlinskii Institute for Problems in Mechanics, Russian Academy of Sciences. It is found that the manifestation of the Kaiser effect in the current cycle of multiaxial nonproportional compression depends on the behavior of the size, shape, and orientation of the Lame ellipsoid with respect to the previous cycle. The Kaiser effect is observed in the case when the material has already been subjected to active loading corresponding to the set orientation of the stress ellipsoid. The degree of the specified-effect manifestation is determined by the behavior of the shape of the Lame ellipsoid.

Development and testing of non-viscid solver based on UST3D programming code

Non-viscous versions of UST3D code elaborated in Laboratory of Radiative Gas Dynamics of Ishlinsky Institute for Problems in Mechanics were developed to testify the numerical method validity. Two numerical cases were examined to determine solution discrepancy between non-viscous and original algorithmes. The first case consisted in computational modeling of a flow over blunted cylinder-flare configuration under zero and non-zero angles of attack. The second case represented hypersonic flow over standard HB-2 ballistic model under angle of attack. Agreement of numerical results obtained with non-viscous solver and the original code was observed. These results approve the possibility of UST3D application for non-viscous problems.

Analysis of the high speed gas flow over a sphere in the range of Mach numbers 2–12

In this paper, the results of analysis of the high speed gas flow over a sphere are presented. Numerical investigations were carried out using the UST3D code developed at the Ishlinsky Institute for Problems in Mechanics of RAS (IPMech RAS). The code implements numerical simulation of aerothermodynamics of aircrafts in the context of integration of the full system of Navier – Stokes equations on unstructured mesh using the perfect gas model.

Three-dimensional calculation of the aerothermodynamics of a double cone 25°/55° on an unstructured grid

A three-dimensional numerical simulation of 25°/55° double-cone high-speed aerothermodynamics on an unstructured grid was carried out. For numerical simulation of the flow, a geometric model of a double cone 25°/55° was built. Numerical simulation using air and N2 (nitrogen) was carried out. For numerical simulation, the CFD computer code UG3D developed in the Institute for Problems in Mechanics of the Russian academy of Sciences was used. This solver is based on the model of Navier-Stokes equations for a perfect gas solved on an unstructured grid. Verification and validation of the results were carried out.

Aerodynamics and Flight Dynamics Simulation of Basic Finner Supersonic Flight in Aeroballistic Experiment

This paper presents some results of aerodynamics and flight dynamics modeling of Basic Finner supersonic flight in an aeroballistic experiment [1]. Three dimensional surface based on the experiment description was formed. Unstructured tetrahedral volume mesh is formed after it. Aerodynamics computations were done by software package for CFD numerical computation of free form high-speed vehicle ug3D developed in the Institute for Problems in Mechanics. Obtained from CFD calculations aerodynamic coefficients became initial data for unguided Basic Finner flight dynamics calculations. Flight dynamics computations were done by developed solver MODIN for typical high speed vehicles flight dynamics calculations [2]. Six degrees of freedom motion without considering Earth rotation and form are adopted. Results of experimental and obtained numerical aerodynamic coefficients and flight parameters data comparison are also presented.

Geomechanical Modeling for Creating New Technologies of Deep Hydrocarbon Fields Development

Abstract— The paper presents the results of the experimental investigation of the rock physical properties in relation to issues of creating scientific fundamentals for new hydrocarbon production technologies. Nowadays easily accessible deposits of oil and gas which lies at depths of 2-3 km are gradually being depleted. The production of hydrocarbons from unconventional sources becomes all the more urgent. These include shale gas and oil, Arctic hydrocarbon resources, gas hydrates, coal bed methane, oil and gas from deep horizons. The development of such deposits requires the creation of new technologies. The knowledge of mechanical and filtration properties of rocks lying at great depths is needed for creation of the new oil production technologies. The investigation of the dependence of well stability and permeability of rocks on the stress-strain state which is determined by the pressure in the well and its bottom hole design in conditions of high rock pressure is required also. For the first time the tests of reservoir rocks from the depths of more than 6 km were carried out on the true triaxial load system. The real conditions that occur in the vicinity of the borehole for various bottom designs at lowering pressure were experimentally simulated on the unique experimental facility, Triaxial Independent Load Test System built in the Institute for Problems in Mechanics of the Russian Academy of Science. It is found that the possibility to improve the production rate of a well by increasing pressure drawdown in a well exists despite the low permeability and high strength of such rocks.

В настоящей библиографической заметке приводятся биографические сведения об этом крупном ученом, который хорошо известен в России и за рубежом. Представлены сведения о его вкладе в развитие механики и прикладной математики.
