A pressurized sewer system was extensively tested during a 13-1/4 month period in Albany, NY. This new concept consisted of Grinder Pump (GP) units, newly developed and capable of macerating most wastewater solids to less than 1/4 in. in diameter, and small diameter, nonmetallic pipes. The pressurized sewer system, serving 12 single family houses, was constructed using plastic pipes, 1-1/4 in. in diameter for the pressure sewer laterals and 1-1/4 in. to 3 in. for the pressure sewer main. Operational data, which were automatically and continuously recorded, are presented and graphically illustrated; as well as results from a very extensive biological, chemical, and physical analysis study performed on the pressurized sewer effluent. The system’s economics, derived from the Albany demonstration, are examined and reflect the present day installation cost of a pressure sewer system. Recommendations are made toward improving the operational and maintenance phases of a pressurized sewer system.
