Social Media Affordances of Ephemerality and Permanence: Social Comparison, Self-Esteem, and Body Image Concerns

Instagram provides users with different features, including posts and stories. Instagram post stays on the users’ feeds permanently unless the content is deleted. An Instagram story has an ephemeral nature as the uploaded content vanishes after 24 h. Through a survey of 224 respondents, this study explored individuals’ psychological constructs when using different Instagram features. Instagram usage pattern (i.e., use of different features (video, emoji, etc.), categories of content (food, selfie, etc.) that users usually post, reasons for editing photos (slim body, flawless skin, etc.), amount of time to create and upload a post/story), social comparison, self-esteem, and body image concerns based on the user’s perception of ephemerality and permanency were examined. Results demonstrated that the perception of ephemerality on Instagram stories were negatively related to social comparison and body image concerns. In addition, the longer the amount of time the user spent on posting either a post or story on Instagram, the higher the likelihood the user was to socially compare. Overall, the findings align with previous research suggesting that Instagram users who socially compare are likely to have lower self-esteem and higher body image concerns.

Instagram sebagai Media Pembelajaran Digital Agama Islam di Era 4.0

The purpose of this study is to discuss the use of social media, namely utilizing Instagram features in the delivery of Islamic material, so that this can make Instagram an innovation in Islamic digital learning media. This is motivated by the rapid development of technology in the 4.0 era that requires an educator to be able to use it in the teaching and learning process. This type of research is qualitative research with the chosen approach method being virtual ethnography. Data was collected using documentation and observation on several accounts on Instagram that met the parameters. Data analysis was carried out through the first stages of data reduction, then data presentation, and finally concluding. The results of the study show that the features provided by Instagram can be used as learning media innovations and this is believed to make learning Islamic Religious Education more interesting because the material is presented using different media and ways than usual. Instastory features, feeds, reels, highlights, and Instagram live are some of the Instagram features that can be used as learning media.

In Indoensia instagram is one of the most popular platform who used by more than a half of population. This because some of it’s several features can support sales promotion activities which considered very crusial . The efficiency of Instagram as a promotional media is considered to have many advantages including ease of use, effective time and effort from both the seller and buyer side, has easy reach so that it can be accessed anywhere and anytime and there is no age discrimination. This study aims to analyze Instagram @Cashaofficial in carrying out promotions for their millennials sofa product, namely bean bags. In this study, researchers used several elements of social media marketing, namely content creation, content sharing, connecting, and community building. This study uses a qualitative descriptive technique. Primary data can be obtained through observations and direct observations of the research object. With the use of good features, @cashaofficial is able to share information that is quite important to other Instagram users, but on the one hand the @cashaofficial team has not used all Instagram features in conducting promotions and there are still some features that are not used as promotional media.

BEYOND LIKE AND SHARE: OPTIMIZING POTENTIAL OF INSTAGRAM IN A HIGHER EDUCATION ADMISSION (A Study on the Admission Office at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta)

Uses of social media in the millennial generation, especially Instagram, is increasing. This generation accesses various information through the media, particularly New Student Admission (commonly called PMB-Peneriman Mahasiswa Baru). Data in 2020 showed that 95.2% of active students had Instagram, and 45.8% of them accessed the PMB information through Instagram. In the next year, 96.3% of active students had Instagram, and 71.2% accessed the PMB information through Instagram. From this data, UIN Sunan Kalijaga Admission optimizes Instagram features as a promotional media. This manuscript discusses how the Admission Office of UIN Sunan Kalijaga utilizes potential of Instagram to promote its new student admission, the PMB. This study found that there are five Instagram features that can be optimized to promote the PMB information, specifically posting, caption, hashtag, instastory and paid promote features. To optimize these five features, it is necessary to prepare a timeline based on time habits of the millennial generation in using the Instagram.

Instagram Optimization as Digital Marketing Media: Study at a Private Hospital in Batu City

During the COVID-19 pandemic, up-to-date information becomes a necessity for the public, and social media, especially Instagram, play a significant role in digital marketing, including hospitals. The Instagram account of a private hospital in Batu City had a decreasing performance and has become inactive since the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak. This study aimed to find a solution to the decreasing performance of the hospital's Instagram account to increase visits, trust, and patient satisfaction. This research was a quasi-experimental study with a pre- and post-test design without control conducted from September to October 2021. The intervention carried out was conducting training on optimizing the Instagram features. The research sample was ten people obtained through the total sampling method. The data were analyzed using a descriptive analysis test. The training was carried out twice in a period of one week. The first training session discussed the basic features of Instagram and their use, and discussions on the technical aspects of content creation were done in the second session. Measurement of training understanding was carried out by pre-test and post-test. All points in the questionnaire showed positive points of increasing knowledge after the training. Instagram optimization training at the hospital in Batu City can improve staff understanding of digital marketing and is expected to expand the business and introduce the hospital to new patients.

Folk Theories of Avoiding Content Moderation: How Vaccine-Opposed Influencers Amplify Vaccine Opposition on Instagram

This study analyzes how vaccine-opposed users on Instagram share anti-vaccine content despite facing growing moderation attempts by the platform. Through a thematic analysis of Instagram content (in-feed and ephemeral “stories”) of a sample of vaccine-opposed Instagram users, we explore the observable tactics deployed by vaccine-opposed users in their attempts to avoid content moderation and amplify anti-vaccination content. Tactics range from lexical variations to encode vaccine-related keywords, to the creative use of Instagram features and affordances. The emergence of such tactics exists as a type of “folk theorization”—the cultivation of non-professional knowledge of how visibility on the platform works. Findings highlight the complications of content moderation as a route to minimizing misinformation, the consequences of algorithmic opacity and knowledge-building within problematic online communities.

The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative which is done through observation and documentation from @jktinfo. The @jktinfo account has fulfilled the features and is also interactive several times to create a two-way communication where @jktinfo provides information related to citizen journalism, according to McQuaill's theory it can be said that @jktinfo is an account that is good in management and leads to something higher.

Differentiating Problematic from Habitual Instagram Use: A Uses and Grats 2.0 Perspective

The popularity of Instagram among young adults has raised concerns about the excessive use of Instagram. Is it the kind of problematic media use that takes over one’s life or just habitual ritualized use characterized by mindless scrolling? How can we differentiate between the two based on the use of Instagram features and perceived gratifications from the technology itself? Drawing on the theoretical framework of Uses and Gratifications (U&G) and U&G 2.0, we conducted a survey study ( N = 482) to answer these questions. Our findings show that habitual Instagram use is positively related to the use of lurking- and connection-related features and the gratification of play. By contrast, problematic Instagram use is positively correlated with the use of broadcasting-related features and the gratification of novelty. Theoretical implications for differentiating problematic from habitual Instagram use and practical implications for designing ethical interfaces, which consider the digital well-being of users, are discussed.

Exploring the Phenomenon of Fear of Missing Out (FoMO): The Emergence, Practice, and its Impact on Social Media User

This article discusses the phenomenon of Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) on social media. It is a term used to show human consumption behavior who are afraid of missing things including gaining social interaction, buying commodities, and others as it has emerged in social media. Thus, this paper aims to explore and investigate the phenomenon of Fear of Missing Out. This research used Systematic Literature Review (SLR) as the reproducible and explicit method to answer the topic of the research by evaluating, identifying, and synthesizing all related documents and publications by the researchers, and scholars. The research conducts an in-depth study of the articles which have been published in the last ten years and recent FoMO cases that occurred and were reported on local news, articles, and social media. This research reveals the emergence of the phenomenon of FoMO in social media, the practice of FoMO that appear in Instagram features, and the impact of FoMO on social media user. These fndings show that the FoMO phenomenon emerges with the highest fear of missing information, interaction, relatedness, popularity, and opportunity on social media, especially on Instagram. In addition, FoMO harms social media users regarding mental health such as experiencing mental illness, anxiety, depression, and insecurities in comparing life with others. In conclusion, the phenomenon of fear of Missing Out influences the user negatively as it is harmful to both emotional and psychological.

The Impact of Social Media Engagement on Market Share: A System Dynamics Model

Background: Some studies have shown that Return on Total Assets is a strategy to increase market share. Other studies have also shown that social media like WeChat can increase market share. However, no studies have considered Instagram engagement in increasing market share. Objective: This study aims to identify variable linkage that increases market share through a dynamic system approach in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Methods: Using a System Dynamics approach, this study presents a model simulation with a proposed increase in market share by considering Instagram features. This approach creates a Causal Loop Diagram converted into a simulated Stock Flow Diagram. The value generated from the simulation is validated with the mean comparison and % error variance formulas. Results: Instagram engagement increases market share from 0.009 to 0.018. Such engagement can be increased by posting regularly and doing more activities, such as increasing post frequency, holding contests, and maximizing all features. Conclusion: This study has successfully modeled information technology, i.e., a promotion module on social media. However, this work has not yet demonstrated how the features can gain more market share, so future research is needed. Instagram Platform Optimization by (Technology Acceptance Model) Approach As Improvement of Mozarella Marketing Performance at Covid-19 Pandemic Era

The change of consumers’ behaviors during pandemic is a challenge for livestock products producers to survive among sector threats that are often unpredictable by producers. Such change demanded the producers to be more adaptive and sensitive to consumers’ behaviors, so that most of producers used traffic analysis as basic to identify the consumers’ behaviors in diverse condition. High level of technological use during pandemic is an opportunity for the producers to optimize platform used by majority of the market segmentation. The research purpose was optimizing marketing strategy via Instagram as improvement of SMEs-scale Mozarella marketing performance. The research methods used were survey and interview with consumers who use Instagram, 100 peoples, and then analyzed using Multiple Regression as basic in composing strategies. Results of the analysis showed that 87% TAM positively affected on intention of the consumers to purchase Mozarella cheese via Instagram. Indicator that dominates high effect of both elements is ease to use. It indicates that consumers who majority are native digital consumers, prefer to use Instagram because they are pro to Instagram features, which is assumed to be easy for landing page when they have purchasing transaction.

“InstaGrammar!” Incorporating Instagram Reel to Enhance English as a Second Language Learners’ Grammatical Accuracy

In the context of the Malaysian education system, teaching English as a second language is crucial to the factor that the government is accentuating to produce pupils who are well versed in all English language skills. In line with that, schools and teachers together endeavour to approach the difficulties faced by pupils in learning English as a second language. While the world educational system is gradually accepting digital technology, on the other hand social media has gotten the young learners hooked to it around the clock and it has snapped us into an awareness that social media is not only transforming their behaviours but it’s also affecting their language learning skills mainly grammar. Presently, besides TikTok, Instagram Reel has been gaining more popularity largely among teenagers. That being the case, it is requisite to make use of the popularity of the exhilarating pertinent feature. Based on the past studies, many Malaysian pupils struggle in writing or speaking English with fewer grammatical errors. Therefore, in this study, researchers aim to analyze lower secondary school pupils’ insights in learning grammatical accuracy through Instagram with an intervention, InstaGrammar. An online survey questionnaire was adapted and adopted from the TAM (Technology Acceptance Model). The questionnaire was distributed to 30 Form 2 pupils from a secondary private school based in Selangor, Malaysia. Pupils used one of the current trending Instagram features, Reels to record creative videos about grammar that they’ve learned in the classroom. This activity was conducted to elevate their motivation and this intervention is intended to balance the acquisition of grammar both in and outside the classroom as well as elevate and inspire the pupils. The outcome of the findings confirmed that ESL pupils’ responses towards the intervention were positive. Respondents determined on the incorporation of Instagram’s latest feature, reel in learning grammar. Teaching grammar to enhance pupils’ language proficiency is not a lone ranger effort anymore but it has to be a common practice among all teachers to cater to current generation pupils’ needs by incorporating social media such as Instagram to teach grammar rules.

The Identity Construction of Young Gay on Instagram

<em><span>In Indonesia in the last five years, homosexuals still experience discrimination. This condition causes the gay to create new identities that are constructed. Instagram is a medium that is currently widely used by gay in social interactions. This media is used by gays to construct their identity. This study aims to find out how they construct their identity through instragram social media, and what their identity is different in the real world and cyberspace in Bandung. This research method is qualitative with a phenomenological study approach. The informants in this study were gay groups in Bandung City, expecially gay young. Sampling technique used to purposive sampling with deep interview, observation and documentation. The results of this study say that one's experience of being gay is driven by internal environmental factors, namely the treatment of discrimination from family members, colleague and friends. The popular features of Instagram used by informants on Instagram are posting photo, video, and comment by share story to post. Gays construct their identity through online and offline media. Researchers found that there were two stages (front stage and back stage) played by gays when interacting with others.</span></em>

Incorporating Instagram Features in EFL Learning Environment

<p>Instagram, famous for its easy picture and video sharing features, also has some other features, such as quiz, question, and poll, which can be used as English learning tools. The incorporation of Instagram becomes a valuable resource as most university students use Instagram. This study aims to explore those features and to investigate students’ perceptions of Instagram as learning tools. The research participants are 50 students who speak English as a foreign language (EFL) studying at a university which applies English as a medium of instruction (EMI). The participants follow the researcher’s Instagram account and are notified by email for every new post. They, therefore, can view and participate in those posts. The data is gathered from an online questionnaire. The results suggest that quiz is favored for its surprisingly effective function as a correction tool for common errors. In addition, cartoon post is favored as it provides funny and contextual use of the vocabulary which makes the vocabulary memorable. Hence, Instagram becomes effective English learning environment, which is supplementary to English classes, especially as an error correction and source of vocabulary input reaching massive number of students with only one post.</p>

Analisis Konten Media Sosial Arsip UGM di Masa Pandemi Covid-19: Peluang dan Tantangan

The use of social media for public institutions during the covid-19 pandemic is a necessity. In its use, social media brings both opportunities and challenges at the same time. Monitoring and evaluation of the use of social media for institutions finds the right time to be implemented immediately. This study aims to describe the types of content uploaded on the social media of the archive of UGM during the covid-19 pandemic and to describe the opportunities and challenges of using social media during the covid-19 pandemic at the archive of UGM. This research is a combination of qualitative and literature research. Primary data was collected through observations on uploading the Archive of UGM Instagram account (@arsipugm). Data collection on uploads in the last three months (September-November 2020). The data were verified with secondary data obtained through documentation in scientific publications and information channels related to the Archive of UGM. Data analysis was conducted by reducing the findings from the observation and documentation process. Data were presented in the form of tables, figures and narration. The results of this study indicate that during the covid-19 pandemic there were only two types of uploads from @arsipugm. They are archival material and reports. The percentage of uploads with archived material was 89.29% and report-type uploads was 10.71%. The use of social media for the archive of UGM during the covid-19 pandemic finds its opportunities, includes: socialization of archival services during the covid-19 pandemic; cooperation between unit and parent institutional accounts; and creative media uploads. Meanwhile, at the same time it has some challenges, includes: unoptimal use of Instagram's features; lack of interaction between the admin and the audience; the variant and volume of uploaded material has not been maximized; and monotone time lines.

How Food Marketing on Instagram Shapes Adolescents' Food Preferences: Online Randomized Trial.

BackgroundWorldwide obesity rates have prompted 16 countries to enact policies to reduce children’s exposure to unhealthy food marketing, but few policies address online advertising practices or protect adolescents from being targeted. Given adolescents spend so much time online, it is critical to understand how persuasive Instagram food advertisements (ads) are compared with traditional food ads. To strengthen online food marketing policies, more evidence is needed on whether social media ads are more persuasive than other types of ads in shaping adolescents’ preferences.ObjectiveThis study examined whether adolescents could identify food companies’ Instagram posts as ads, and the extent to which Instagram versus traditional food ads shape adolescents’ preferences.MethodsIn Part 1, participants aged 13-17 years (N=832) viewed 8 pairs of ads and were asked to identify which ads originated from Instagram. One ad in each pair was selected from traditional sources (eg, print; online banner ad), and the other ad was selected from Instagram, but we removed the Instagram frame—which includes the logo, comments, and “likes.” In Part 2, participants were randomized to rate food ads that ostensibly originated from (1) Instagram (ie, we photoshopped the Instagram frame onto ads); or (2) traditional sources. Unbeknownst to participants, half of the ads in their condition originated from Instagram and half originated from traditional sources.ResultsIn Part 1, adolescents performed worse than chance when asked to identify Instagram ads (P<.001). In Part 2, there were no differences on 4 of 5 outcomes in the “labeled ad condition.” In the “unlabeled ad condition,” however, they preferred Instagram ads to traditional ads on 3 of 5 outcomes (ie, trendiness, P=.001; artistic appeal, P=.001; likeability, P=.001).ConclusionsAdolescents incorrectly identified traditional ads as Instagram posts, suggesting the artistic appearance of social media ads may not be perceived as marketing. Further, the mere presence of Instagram features caused adolescents to rate food ads more positively than ads without Instagram features.

Educationalizing Instagram for Virtual Instruction in COVID-19

Learning through social media platforms is a nascent pedagogy that opens up new virtual online e-instructional modalities and avenues to be explored especially in these challenging emergency times of COVID-19. This research focuses on a self-directed initiative of a math teacher who taught her students in an open virtual class via Instagram. This study explores how the main features of Instagram -inherently used as social interaction platform - were maximized for educational purposes. It also investigates the effects, be they positive or negative, on the learning-teaching process in terms of engagement and communication. For this, a mixed-method sequential exploratory design was opted for to conduct the study which surveyed 100 students across 22 different high schools who took part in the virtual open math classes. The findings highlight the different patterns of Instagram use and platform features that lend this social media website the requisite feasibility to educationalize it. Furthermore, the results reveal both the favourable and disadvantageous aspects of Instagram.

This study aims to identify the desire of consumers to select restaurants using Instagram, which has recently become common as an information retrieval tool, to understand the influence of restaurant selection attributes and behavior. This research analysis was conducted on consumers who had selected restaurants using Instagram and based on 315 copies of questionnaire data. Studies have shown that, first, prices and food, interior design, and services influence behavioral intentions. Second, interiors and services have been shown to affect Instagram characteristics. Third, Instagram characteristics have been shown to affect behavioral intentions. Fourth, Instagram features have a partial effect on interior design and behavioral intentions, and a full effect on service and behavioral intentions. Finally, the significance of this paper is the lack of research on restaurant selection attributes centered on Instagram, which means that the scope of the study has been expanded by comprehensively analyzing the restaurant selection attributes and behaviors. Nevertheless, there is a limit to the sample. There will be differences depending on the age of using Instagram, and future studies will need to present marketing measures through differentiation by age group through research through allocation samples by age.
