The fate of high-redshift massive compact galaxies

Massive high-redshift quiescent compact galaxies (nicknamed red nuggets) have been traditionally connected to present-day elliptical galaxies, often overlooking the relationships that they may have with other galaxy types. We use large bulge-disk decomposition catalogues based on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to check the hypothesis that red nuggets have survived as compact cores embedded inside the haloes or disks of present-day massive galaxies. In this study, we designate a "compact core" as the bulge component that satisfies a prescribed compactness criterion. Photometric and dynamic mass-size and mass-density relations are used to show that, in the inner regions of galaxies at z ~ 0.1, there are "abundant" compact cores matching the peculiar properties of the red nuggets, an abundance comparable to that of red nuggets at z ~ 1.5. Furthermore, the morphology distribution of the present-day galaxies hosting compact cores is used to demonstrate that, in addition to the standard channel connecting red nuggets with elliptical galaxies, a comparable fraction of red nuggets might have ended up embedded in disks. This result generalises the inside-out formation scenario; present-day massive galaxies can begin as dense spheroidal cores (red nuggets), around which either a spheroidal halo or a disk are formed later.

RADIAL STAR FORMATION HISTORIES IN 15 NEARBY GALAXIES

ABSTRACT New deep optical and near-infrared imaging is combined with archival ultraviolet and infrared data for 15 nearby galaxies mapped in the Spitzer Extended Disk Galaxy Exploration Science survey. These images are particularly deep and thus excellent for studying the low surface brightness outskirts of these disk-dominated galaxies with stellar masses ranging between 108 and 10 11 M ⊙ . ?> The spectral energy distributions derived from this data set are modeled to investigate the radial variations in the galaxy colors and star formation histories. Taken as a whole, the sample shows bluer and younger stars for larger radii until reversing near the optical radius, whereafter the trend is for redder and older stars for larger galacto-centric distances. These results are consistent with an inside-out disk formation scenario coupled with an old stellar outer disk population formed through radial migration and/or the cumulative history of minor mergers and accretions of satellite dwarf galaxies. However, these trends are quite modest and the variation from galaxy to galaxy is substantial. Additional data for a larger sample of galaxies are needed to confirm or dismiss these modest sample-wide trends.

The star formation history of low-mass disk galaxies: A case study of NGC 300

Since NGC300 is a bulge-less, isolated low-mass galaxy and has not experienced radial migration during its evolution history, it can be treated as an ideal laboratory to test simple galactic chemical evolution models. By assuming its disk forms gradually from continuous accretion of primordial gas and including the gas-outflow process, we construct a simple chemical evolution model for NGC300 to build a bridge between its SFH and its observed data, especially the present-day radial profiles and global observed properties (e.g., cold gas mass, star-formation rate and metallicity). By means of comparing the model predictions with the corresponding observations, we adopt the classical $\chi^{2}$ methodology to find out the best combination of free parameters $a$, $b$ and $b_{\rm out}$. Our results show that, by assuming an inside-out formation scenario and an appropriate outflow rate, our model reproduces well most of the present-day observational values, not only the radial profiles but also the global observational data for the NGC300 disk. Our results suggest that NGC300 may experience a rapid growth of its disk. Through comparing the best-fitting model predicted SFH of NGC300 with that of M33, we find that the mean stellar age of NGC300 is older than that of M33 and there is a lack of primordial gas infall onto the disk of NGC300 recently. Our results also imply that the local environment may paly a key role in the secular evolution of NGC300.

ISOTOPIC RATIOS OF 18 O/ 17 O IN THE GALACTIC CENTRAL REGION

The O-18/O-17 isotopic ratio of oxygen is a crucial measure of the secular enrichment of the interstellar medium by ejecta from high-mass versus intermediate-mass stars. So far, however, there is a lack of data, particularly from the Galactic center (GC) region. Therefore, we have mapped typical molecular clouds in this region in the J = 1-0 lines of (CO)-O-18 and (CO)-O-17 with the Delingha 13.7 m telescope (DLH). Complementary pointed observations toward selected positions throughout the GC region were obtained with the IRAM 30 m and Mopra 22 m telescopes. (CO)-O-18/(CO)-O-17 abundance ratios reflecting the O-18/O-17 isotope ratios were obtained from integrated intensity ratios of (CO)-O-18 and (CO)-O-17. For the first time, (CO)-O-18/(CO)-O-17 abundance ratios are determined for Sgr C (V similar to-58 km s(-1)), Sgr D (V similar to 80 km s(-1)), and the 1 degrees.3 complex (V similar to 80 km s(-1)). Through our mapping observations, abundance ratios are also obtained for Sgr A (similar to 0 and similar to 50 km s(-1) component) and Sgr B2 (similar to 60 km s(-1)), which are consistent with the results from previous single-point observations. Our frequency-corrected abundance ratios of the GC clouds range from 2.58 +/- 0.07 (Sgr D, V similar to 80 km s(-1), DLH) to 3.54 +/- 0.12 (Sgr A, similar to 50 km s(-1)). In addition, strong narrow components (line width less than 5 km s(-1)) from the foreground clouds are detected toward Sgr D (-18 km s(-1)), the 1 degrees.3 complex (-18 km s(-1)), and M+ 5.3-0.3 (22 km s(-1)), with a larger abundance ratio around 4.0. Our results show a clear trend of lower (CO)-O-18/(CO)-O-17 abundance ratios toward the GC region relative to molecular clouds in the Galactic disk. Furthermore, even inside the GC region, ratios appear not to be uniform. The low GC values are consistent with an inside-out formation scenario for our Galaxy.

Outside-in stellar formation in the spiral galaxy M33?

We present and discuss results from chemical evolution models for M33. For our models we adopt a galactic formation with an inside-out scenario. The models are built to reproduce three observational constraints of the M33 disk: the radial distributions of the total baryonic mass, the gas mass, and the O/H abundance. From observations, we find that the total baryonic mass profile in M33 has a double exponential behavior, decreasing exponentially for r<= 6 kpc, and increasing lightly for r > 6 kpc due to the increase of the gas mass surface density. To adopt a concordant set of stellar and H II regions O/H values, we had to correct the latter for the effect of temperature variations and O dust depletion. Our best model shows a good agreement with the observed the radial distributions of: the SFR, the stellar mass, C/H, N/H, Ne/H, Mg/H, Si/H, P/H, S/H, Ar/H, Fe/H,and Z. According to our model, the star formation efficiency is constant in time and space for r <= 6 kpc, but the SFR efficiency decreases with time and galactocentric distance for r > 6 kpc. The reduction of the SFR efficiency occurs earlier at higher r. While the galaxy follows the inside-out formation scenario for all r, the stars follow the inside-out scenario only up to r = 6 kpc, but for r > 6 kpc the stars follow an outside-in formation. The stellar formation histories inferred for each r imply that the average age of the stars for r > 6 increases with r.

The evolution and star-formation history of M33

We construct a parameterized model to explore the main properties of the star formation history of M33. We assume that the disk originates and grows by the primordial gas infall and adopt the simple form of gas accretion rate with one free parameter, the infall time-scale. We also include the contribution of gas outflow process. A major update of the model is that we adopt a molecular hydrogen correlated star formation law and calculate the evolution of the atomic and molecular gas separately. Comparisons between the model predictions and the observational data show that the model predictions are very sensitive to the adopted infall time-scale, while the gas outflow process mainly influences the metallicity profile. The model adopting a moderate outflow rate and an inside-out formation scenario can be in good agreement with most of observed constraints of M33 disk. We also compare the model predictions based on the molecular hydrogen correlated star formation law and that based on the Kennicutt star formation law. Our results imply that the molecular hydrogen correlated star formation law should be preferred to describe the evolution of the M33 disk, especially the radial distributions of both the cold gas and the stellar population.

Stellar population gradients in GASS

AbstractWe study relationships between the stellar populations and interstellar medium in massive galaxies using the Galex Arecibo SDSS Survey (GASS). The sample consists of HI-observations (~1000 galaxies) and complementary H2-observations (330 galaxies) and long-slit spectroscopy (230 galaxies). Luminosity-weighted stellar population ages, metallicitites and element abundance ratios, are derived by fitting stellar population models of absorption line indices. We find that the ages correlate more strongly with molecular gas fraction (MH2/M*) than with neutral Hydrogen fraction (MHI/M*). This result strengthens the theory that H2 is a better tracer of star-formation than HI. The sample is dominated by negative metallicity-gradients and flat Mg/Fe-gradients. Galaxies with high MH2/M*-ratios show in general flat or weakly negative age-gradients. For low MH2/M*-ratios the age-gradients are overall negative. These results are in agreement with the inside-out galaxy formation scenario. For galaxies with high r90/r50-ratios, a sub-population show positive age-gradients indicating additional formation channels. Furthermore, for galaxies with high MH2/M*-ratios more massive systems have older stellar populations in their centers, suggesting downsizing within the inside-out formation scenario.

THE GROWTH OF THE DISK GALAXY UGC8802

The disk galaxy UGC8802 has high neutral gas content and a flat profile of star formation rate compared to other disk galaxies with similar stellar mass. It also shows a steep metallicity gradient. We construct a chemical evolution model to explore its growth history by assuming its disk grows gradually from continuous gas infall, which is shaped by a free parameter -- the infall-peak time. By adopting the recently observed molecular surface density related star formation law, we show that a late infall-peak time can naturally explain the observed high neutral gas content, while an inside-out disk formation scenario can fairly reproduce the steep oxygen abundance gradient. Our results show that most of the observed features of UGC8802 can be well reproduced by simply `turning the knob' on gas inflow with one single parameter, which implies that the observed properties of gas-rich galaxies could also be modelled in a similar way.

THE STAR FORMATION HISTORY OF M32

We use deep HST ACS/HRC observations of a field within M32 (F1) and an M31 background field (F2) to determine the star formation history (SFH) of M32 from its resolved stellar population. We find that 2-5Gyr old stars contribute \som40%+/- 17% of M32's mass, while 55%+/-21% of M32's mass comes from stars older than 5 Gyr. The mass-weighted mean age and metallicity of M32 at F1 are <Age>=6.8+/-1.5 Gyr and <[M/H]>=-0.01+/-0.08 dex. The SFH additionally indicates the presence of young (<2 Gyr old), metal-poor ([M/H]\sim-0.7) stars, suggesting that blue straggler stars contribute ~2% of the mass at F1; the remaining \sim3% of the mass is in young metal-rich stars. Line-strength indices computed from the SFH imply a light-weighted mean age and metallicity of 4.9 Gyr and [M/H] = -0.12 dex, and single-stellar-population-equivalent parameters of 2.9+/-0.2 Gyr and [M/H]=0.02+/-0.01 dex at F1 (~2.7 re). This contradicts spectroscopic studies that show a steep age gradient from M32's center to 1re. The inferred SFH of the M31 background field F2 reveals that the majority of its stars are old, with \sim95% of its mass already acquired 5-14 Gyr ago. It is composed of two dominant populations; \sim30%+/-7.5% of its mass is in a 5-8 Gyr old population, and \sim65%+/-9% of the mass is in a 8-14 Gyr old population. The mass-weighted mean age and metallicity of F2 are <Age>=9.2+/-1.2 Gyr and <[M/H]>=-0.10+/-0.10 dex, respectively. Our results suggest that the inner disk and spheroid populations of M31 are indistinguishable from those of the outer disk and spheroid. Assuming the mean age of M31's disk at F2 (\sim1 disk scale length) to be 5-9 Gyr, our results agree with an inside-out disk formation scenario for M31's disk.

Formation and dissolution of leaky clusters

Massive Galactic clusters (> 1000 Msun) exhibit a clear correlation between cluster density, size and age and can be sorted in two categories, i.e. starburst and leaky clusters. The reason for the existance of two types of massive clusters is an open question. However, the answer is probably connected to a different formation histories of the two types. In this study we concentrate onleaky clusters only and investigate possible formation scenarios and gas expulsion phase. This is done by using existing observational data and numerical results of embedded cluster properties. Assuming that a clear correlation between cluster density, size and age exists, it is shown that the density-radius development over time forembedded clusters can be approximated by rho \approx 100*r ^{-1.3} Msun pc^{-3}. The consequences for the star formation process in leaky clusters are discussed and found to favour an inside-out star formation scenario with an initially low but later accelerated star formation rate. It is shown how the leaky clusters form in a unique sequential manner and that rapid gas expulsion is responsible for the 80-90\% mass loss over the next 20 Myr.

Star formation history of barred disc galaxies

We present the first results of a pilot study aimed at understanding the influence of bars on the evolution of galaxy discs through the study of their stellar content. We examine here the kinematics, star formation history, mass-weighted, luminosity-weighted, and single stellar population (SSP) equivalent ages and metallicities for four galaxies ranging from lenticulars to late-type spirals. The data employed extends to 2-3 disc scalelengths, with S/N(A)>50. Several techniques are explored to derive star formation histories and SSP-equivalent parameters, each of which are shown to be compatible. We demostrate that the age-metallicity degeneracy is highly reduced by using spectral fitting techniques --instead of indices-- to derive these parameters. We found that the majority of the stellar mass in our sample is composed of old (~10 Gyr) stars. This is true in the bulge and the disc region, even beyond two disc scalelengths. In the bulge region, we find that the young, dynamically cold, structures produced by the presence of the bar (e.g., nuclear discs or rings) are responsible for shaping the bulges' age and metallicity gradients. In the disc region, a larger fraction of young stars is present in the external parts of the disc compared with the inner disc. The disc growth is, therefore, compatible with a moderate inside-out formation scenario, where the luminosity weighted age changes from ~10 Gyrs in the centre, to ~4 Gyrs at two disc scalelengths, depending upon the galaxy. For two galaxies, we compare the metallicity and age gradients of the disc major axis with that of the bar, finding very important differences. In particular, the stellar population of the bar is more similar to the bulge than to the disc, indicating that, at least in those two galaxies, bars formed long ago and have survived to the present day. Quantifying the Redistribution of Mass in Galactic Disks due to Bars

AbstractNumerical simulations have shown that strong gravitational torque by non-axisymmetric components induce evolutionary processes such as redistribution of mass and angular momentum in the galactic disks and consequent change of chemical abundance profiles. If we hope to understand chemical evolution gradients and their evolution we must understand the secular processes and re-arrangement of material by non-axisymmetric components and vice-versa. The most obvious of these aforementioned non-axisymmetric components are bars - at least 2/3 of spiral galaxies host a bar, and possibly all disk galaxies have hosted a bar at some point in their evolution. While observationally it has been found that barred galaxies have shallower gas-phase metallicity gradients than non-barred galaxies, a complementary analysis of the stellar abundance profiles has not yet been undertaken. This is unfortunate because the study of both gas and stars is important in providing a complete picture, as the two components undergo (and suffer from) very different evolutionary process. We present here a pilot study of the gas and stellar metallicity and age distributions in a sample of barred and non-barred galaxies using 2D spectroscopic observations. We found that the majority of the stellar mass in our sample is composed of old (~10 Gyr) stars. This is true in the bulge and the disc region, even beyond two disc scalelengths. In the disc region, a larger fraction of young stars is present in the external parts of the disc compared with the inner disc. The disc growth is, therefore, compatible with a moderate inside-out formation scenario, where the luminosity-weighted age changes from ~10 Gyrs in the centre, to ~4 Gyrs at two disc scalelengths, depending upon the galaxy. However, the presence of substructure, like star forming rings, can produce stellar population trends that are not directly related with the growing of the disc but to the bar potential. In the disc region, the metallicity gradient always decrease with the radius. In the bulge region this is not always true and we find inverse metallicity gradients in several galaxies.

Multiband photometric decomposition of nuclear stellar disks

Small and bright stellar disks with scale lengths of few tens of parsec are known to reside in the center of galaxies. They are believed to have formed in a dissipational process as the end result of star formation in gas either accreted in a merging (or acquisition) event or piled up by the secular evolution of a nuclear bar. Only few of them have been studied in detail to date. Using archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging, we investigated the photometric parameters of the nuclear stellar disks hosted by three early-type galaxies in the Virgo cluster, NGC 4458, NGC4478, and NGC4570. We aimed at constraining the process of formation of their stars. The central surface brightness, scale length, inclination, and position angle of the nuclear disks were derived by adopting the photometric decomposition method introduced by Scorza & Bender and assuming the disks to be infinitesimally thin and exponential. The location, orientation, and size of the nuclear disks is the same in all the images obtained with the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 and Advanced Camera for Survey and available in the HST Science Archive. The scale length, inclination, and position angle of each disk are constant within the errors in the observed U, B, V, and I passbands, independently of their values and of the properties of the host spheroid. We interpret the absence of color gradients in the stellar population of the nuclear disks as the signature that star formation homogeneously occurred all through their extension. A inside-out formation scenario is, instead, expected to produce color gradients and therefore is ruled out.

Outside-In Disk Evolution in the Large Magellanic Cloud

From the analysis of the color-magnitude diagrams and color functions of four wide LMC fields located from 2 to 6 kpc from the kinematic center of the LMC we present evidence that, while the oldest population is coeval in all fields, the age of the youngest component of the dominant stellar population gradually increases with galactocentric distance, from currently active star formation in a field at 2.3°, to 100 Myr, 0.8 Gyr, and 1.5 Gyr in fields at 4.0°, 5.5°, and 7.1°, respectively. This outside-in quenching of the star formation in the LMC disk is correlated with the decreasing H I column density (which is ≤2 × 1020 cm−2 in the two outermost fields with little or no current star formation). Other work in the literature hints at similar behavior in the stellar populations of irregular galaxies and in M33. This is observational evidence against the inside-out disk formation scenario in low-mass spirals and irregular galaxies. Alternatively, it could be that the age distribution with radius results from interplay between the evolution with time of the star-forming area of the LMC and the subsequent outward migration of the stars.

Rejuvenation of spiral bulges

AbstractWe seek to understand whether the stellar populations of galactic bulges show evidence of secular evolution triggered by the presence of the disc. To this end we re-analyse the sample of Proctor &amp; Sansom (2002), deriving stellar population ages and element abundances from absorption line indices as functions of central velocity dispersion and Hubble type. In agreement with other studies in the literature, we find that bulges have relatively low luminosity weighted ages, the lowest age derived being 1.3 Gyr. Hence bulges are not generally old, but actually rejuvenated systems. We discuss evidence that this might be true also for the bulge of the Milky Way. The smallest bulges are the youngest with the lowest α/Fe ratios indicating the presence of significant star formation events involving 10 − 30 per cent of their total mass in the past 1 − 2 Gyr. No significant correlations of the stellar population parameters with Hubble Type are found. We show that the above relationships with σ coincide perfectly with those of early-type galaxies. At a given velocity dispersion, bulges and elliptical galaxies are indistinguishable as far as their stellar populations are concerned. These results favour an inside-out formation scenario and indicate that the discs in spiral galaxies of Hubble types Sbc and earlier cannot have a significant influence on the evolution of the stellar populations in the bulge component. The phenomenon of pseudobulge formation must be restricted to spirals of types later than Sbc.

Hence bulges are not generally old but actually rejuvenated systems. We discuss evidence that this might be true also for the bulge of the Milky Way. We show that the smallest bulges, being the youngest with the lowest alpha/Fe ratios, must have experienced star formation events involving 10-30 per cent of their total mass in the past 1-2 Gyr. No significant correlations of the stellar population parameters with Hubble Type are found instead. We show that the relationships with sigma coincide perfectly with those of early-type galaxies. Hence, bulges are typically seen younger, metal-poorer and less alpha/Fe enhanced than early-type galaxies, only because of their smaller masses. At a given velocity dispersion, bulges and elliptical galaxies are indistinguishable as far as their stellar populations are concerned. These results favour an inside-out formation scenario and indicate that the discs in spiral galaxies of Hubble types Sbc and earlier cannot have a significant influence on the evolution of the stellar populations in the bulge component. The Formation of Disk‐Bulge‐Halo Systems and the Origin of the Hubble Sequence

We investigate the formation of disk-bulge-halo systems by including bulges in the Fall & Efstathiou theory of disk formation. This allows an investigation of bulge dominated disk galaxies, such as S0s and disky ellipticals. The aim of this paper is to examine whether spirals, S0s, and disky elllipticals all can be incorporated in one simple galaxy formation scenario. We investigate an inside-out formation scenario in which the inner, low angular momentum material is assumed to form the bulge. Stability arguments are used to suggest that this bulge formation is a self-regulating process in which the bulge grows until it is massive enough to allow the remaining gas to form a stable disk component. We search for the parameters and physical processes that determine the disk-to-bulge ratio, and therewith explain to a large extent the origin of the Hubble sequence. The spread in halo angular momenta coupled with a spread in the formation redshifts can explain the observed spread in disk properties and disk-to-bulge ratios from spirals to S0s. Disky ellipticals, however, are too compact to be incorporated. Upon introducing a galaxy formation efficiency that depends on redshift, as suggested by the small amount of scatter in the observed Tully-Fisher relation, this scenario naturally predicts a density-morphology relation, the amplitude of which depends on the baryon fraction of the Universe.
