Toxicity of Malaysian Medicinal Plant Extracts Against Sitophilus oryzae and Rhyzopertha dominica

The insecticidal activities of extracts from 22 Malaysian medicinal plant extracts from 8 botanical families were tested against rice weevil: Sitophilus oryzae (L.) and lesser grain borer: Rhyzopertha dominica (F.). The extracts were obtained using hexane, methanol, and dichloromethane to extract potential biopesticides from dried leaves. The toxicity levels were examined periodically based on antifeedant activity and contact toxicity assays using treated grain assay. Hexane extracts of Alpinia conchigera, Alpinia scabra, Curcuma mangga, Curcuma purpurascens, Goniothalamus tapisoides, Piper sarmentosum, and methanol extracts of Curcuma aeruginosa, C. mangga, and Mitragyna speciosa were the most potent extracts against S. oryzae and R. dominica with lethal concentration (LC50) values of ≤ 0.42 mg/mL and ≤ 0.49 mg/mL, respectively. The contact toxicity test results showed that methanol extracts of C. aeruginosa and C. mangga, dichloromethane extracts of Cryptocarya nigra, and hexane extracts of C. mangga, and C. purpurascens resulted in 100% mortality of both pests within 28 days exposure of 5 mg/cm2 concentration.

Insecticidal Activity of Extracts, Fractions, and Pure Molecules of Cissampelos pareira Linnaeus against Aphid, Aphis craccivora Koch.

Aphis craccivora Koch is a polyphagous and major pest of leguminous crops causing significant damage by reducing the yield. Repeated application of synthetic insecticides for the control of aphids has led to development of resistance. Therefore, the present study aimed to screen the insecticidal activity of root/stem extracts/fractions, and pure molecules from Cissampelos pareira Linnaeus against A. craccivora for identification of lead(s). Among root extract/fractions, the n-hexane fraction was found most effective (LC50 = 1828.19 mg/L) against A. craccivora, followed by parent extract (LC50 = 2211.54 mg/L). Among stem extract/fractions, the n-hexane fraction (LC50 = 1246.92 mg/L) was more effective than the water and n-butanol fractions. Based on GC and GC-MS analysis, among different compounds identified in the n-hexane fraction of root and stem, ethyl palmitate (known to possess insecticidal activity) was present in the highest concentration (24.94 to 52.95%) in both the fractions. Among pure molecules, pareirarineformate was found most effective (LC50 = 1491.93 mg/L) against A. craccivora, followed by cissamine (LC50 = 1556.31 mg/L). Parent extract and fractions of C. pareira possess promising activity against aphid. Further, field bio-efficacy studies are necessary to validate the current findings for the development of botanical formulation.

Spectroscopic, charge transfer interaction and docking studies of gardona insecticide

The aim of this study is to provide deeper knowledge of structural activity, spectroscopic analysis, chemical reactivity and insecticidal activity of gardona and its related compounds by combining experimental and computational methods. The natures of the hydrogen bonds were characterized by NBO analysis. Hirshfeld surfaces display all of the intermolecular interactions within the molecule. The 1H and 13C NMR spectra were recorded. The evaluated HOMO and LUMO energies indicate the chemical stability of the molecules. The molecular docking was made on the compounds to study the hydrogen bond interaction and the minimum binding energy. Insecticidal activities of extracts were determined against larvae of Corcyra cephalonica.

Natural insecticides from native plants of the Mediterranean basin and their activity for the control of major insect pests in vegetable crops: shifting from the past to the future

The Mediterranean basin thrives in native plant species are able to produce numerous derivatives that can be used for insect pest control. This article provides an up-to-date overview of the most important native plant species commonly found in this region that have a certain insecticidal value in vegetable crops. Regarding the insecticidal activity of extracts from selected native species, results from both laboratory and field experiments will be also presented to highlight the potential of the latter as alternatives to synthetic insecticides. Considering the great diversity in ingredients among the various plant species, it is essential to record and describe the chemical composition of these species, in conjunction with their insecticidal activity against the main insect pests of vegetable crops. The review concludes in underlining the critical points for increasing the effectiveness and consequently the practical use of natural insecticides in crop protection. Moreover, emphasis is given in understanding the importance of the production of standardized and stable natural resource-based insecticides through the development of suitable formulations, such as capsule suspension that protects the active ingredients from environmental degradation and improves their residual activity.

The Cytotoxicity and Insecticidal Activity of Extracts from Delphinium formosum Boiss. & Huet

There has been no previous investigation on the cytotoxicity of Delphinium formosum Boiss. & Huet. The extracts of the different parts of D. formosum, an endemic species in Turkey, were investigated for their cytotoxic activity against the human liver carcinoma cell line (HepG2) and primary human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). The cytotoxic effects of twelve extracts and subfractions were determined against HepG2 cells using MTT assay. The only active extract was applied to the HUVEC as a model for healthy cells. Only one of the alkaloid-containing extracts from the aerial parts was toxic (IC50 = 244,9 μg/mL against HepG2 and 144,4 μg/mL against HUVEC), while the root extracts were inactive. The results were improbable although it’s predicted secondary metabolites, such as diterpene alkaloids (methyllycaconitine, browniine, lycoctonine, avardharidine, antranoyllycoctonine, delsemine A/B and lycoctonine). Based on previous studies in literature, the cytotoxic plants were also expected to exhibit insecticidal activity. Therefore, the cytotoxic extract of D. formosum was examined for its adulticidal and larvicidal activity against the yellow fever, dengue fevers and Zika virus vector Aedes aegypti L. Antibacterial, Insecticidal and Free radical scavenging activity of methanol extract of Ziziphus rugosa Lam. (Rhamnaceae) fruit pericarp

Introduction:Ziziphus rugosa Lam. belongs to the family Rhamnaceae and is found chiefly in deciduous and semi-evergreen forest of Western Ghats. The present study was undertaken to determine antibacterial, insecticidal and free radical scavenging activity of methanol extract of Ziziphus rugosa Lam. fruit pericarp. Methods: The powdered fruit pericarp of Z. rugosa was extracted with methanol. Antibacterial activity of methanol extract was determined against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus by Agar well diffusion method. Free radical scavenging activity was determined using DPPH assay. The insecticidal activity of extract was tested against second instar larvae of Aedes aegypti. Results: The extract exhibited dose dependent inhibition of test bacteria. Among bacteria, E. coli was found to be more susceptible to extract than S. aureus. All the concentrations of extract produced over 50% mortality of larvae and the larvicidal effect was found to be dose dependent. The extract caused 100% mortality of larvae at concentration of 50 mg/ml. The extract exhibited concentration dependent radical scavenging activity with an IC50 value of 61.88 µg/ml. The phytochemical analysis of extract showed the presence of alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids and glycosides. Conclusion: The extract, in suitable form, may be used to control bacterial diseases, free radical damage and arboviral diseases. The phytoconstituents present in the extract may be responsible for the tested biological efficacies of extract. Further studies on isolation of active constituents from the extract and their biological activity are under investigation.

Insecticidal and Cytotoxic Activities of Extracts of <I>Cacalia tangutica</I> and Its Two Active Ingredients Against <I>Musca domestica</I> and <I>Aedes albopictus</I>

The insecticidal activities of extracts from different parts of Cacalia tangutica (Franch.) H.-M. and two active ingredients, friedelin and stigmasterol, against Musca domestica L., Aedes albopictus (Skuse), and Spodoptera litura (F.) cells (SL cells) are reported. Extracts from leaves, flowers, and roots are highly active against adult M. domestica and the fourth-instar larvae of Ae. albopictus. The foliar extract was the most active with LC50 values of 1.74 mg/g and 196.94 microg/ml against adult M. domestica and fourth-instar larvae of Ae. albopictus, respectively. Extracts from stems were the least active. Friedelin and rotenone were highly active and equitoxic to these two insect species. The LC50 value of friedelin in adult M. domestica 48 h after treatment was 129.27 microg/g. The activity of stigmasterol on these two insect species was not obvious. However, the cytotoxicity of stigmasterol to S. litura cells was significantly greater than that of either friedelin or rotenone. At 25 microg/ml, the mortality of cells 24 h after treatment with stigmasterol was 23.0%. In contrast, friedelin and rotenone at the same concentration produced 16 and 18% mortality, respectively. Our results indicate differences between cytotoxicity in vitro and insect toxicity in vivo.

Insecticidal activity of leaf extracts from Drosophyllum lusitanicum against Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess) (Diptera: Agromyzidae)

SummaryThe present study was carried out to evaluate the insecticidal properties of Drosophyllum lusitanicum (L.) Link, an insectivorous plant that is endemic to the western Iberian Peninsula and northwest Morocco. The insecticidal capacities of extracts from field-grown D. lusitanicum plants were evaluated using contact and feeding bioassays against female adults of Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess), one of the major pests of several floricultural and vegetable crops. In addition, the toxicity of the extract from in vitro cultures of D. lusitanicum was evaluated in contact bioassays. The results showed that extracts of D. lusitanicum have considerable insecticidal potential, particularly through contact application (100% mortality 1 d after treatment). Moreover, extracts from in vitro cultures had similar toxicity to those from field-grown plants. Extracts were analysed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The major constituent was 5-hydroxy-2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone (plumbagin), and its level was similar in extracts from field-grown plants (11.0 mg ml–1) and from in vitro cultures (8.2 mg ml–1). Although the results suggest that the insecticidal activity of extracts of D. lusitanicum is probably due to the presence of this naphthoquinone, further detailed research is required to identify other compounds that may be responsible for the activity.

Activities of some Brazilian plants against larvae of the mosquito Aedes aegypti

The insecticidal activities of extracts and oils of seventeen medicinal plants of Brazil have been determined using an Aedes aegypti larvicidal bioassay. Oils from Anacardium occidentalis, Copaifera langsdorffii, Carapa guianensis, Cymbopogon winterianus and Ageratum conyzoides showed high activities with LC 50 values of 14.5, 41, 57, 98 and 148 μg/l, respectively. The most active ethanolic extract tested was that from the stem of Annona glabra which presented an LC 50 value of 27 μg/l. The potential application of cashew nut oil, an industrial by-product with low commercial value, in the control of the vector of dengue and yellow fever, may be proposed.
