MAJOR INORGANIC IONS IN BULK PRECIPITATION FROM COASTAL URBAN AND MONTANE ATLANTIC FOREST SITES IN SOUTHEASTERN BRAZIL

Bulk precipitation (BP) samples were collected at two coastal urban sites and two montane Atlantic Forest (400 and 1000 m altitude) areas in southeastern Brazil from August 2008 to August 2009. These samples were analyzed for the major inorganic ions (H+, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl– and SO42–) found in rainwater. The concentrations of inorganic nitrogen species (NH4+, NO3– and NO2–) were compiled from a previous study. The volume-weighted mean (VWM) concentrations of inorganic ions differed spatially, with higher values at the coastal urban and coastal periurban sites. On a molar basis, Cl– and Na+ together comprised 60% of the total inorganic constituents at the coastal urban site and 34-42% at the other three sites, as it is the closest to the ocean. Magnesium was also primarily associated with sea-salt aerosol. Non-sea-salt (nss) fractions of K+, Ca2+ and SO42– comprised 68-93% of their VWM concentrations, indicating the contribution of natural (mostly biogenic) and anthropogenic (SO2 oxidation for the latter) sources. Finally, we found that the acidity of BP at the four sampling sites is primarily controlled by the NH4+, nss–Ca2+, nss–SO42–, and NO3– ions, resulting in VWM pH values ranging from 5.60 (lower montane forest) to 5.98 (coastal periurban site).

Source Apportionment of Carbonaceous Matter in Size-Segregated Aerosols at Haikou: Combustion-Related Emissions vs. Natural Emissions

Air pollution can induce diseases and increase the risks of death, and it also has close links with climate change. Carbonaceous matter is an important component of aerosols, but studies quantifying the source apportionment of carbonaceous compositions in different-sized aerosols from a stable carbon isotopic perspective remain scarce. In this study, fine (particulate size < 2.5 μm) and coarse (particulate size 2.5~10 μm) particles were collected from December 2021 to February 2022 (winter) and from June to August 2022 (summer) in the tropical city of Haikou; the concentrations of water-soluble inorganic ions (WSIIs) and total carbonaceous matter (TC) and the stable carbon isotope of TC (δ13C-TC) values in both fine and coarse particles were analyzed. Higher concentrations of TC, SO42−, NO3−, and NH4+ but lower δ13C-TC values in fine particles than those in coarse particles in both winter and summer indicated that combustion-related emissions dominate fine particulate TC sources. The δ13C-TC values coupled with the stable isotope mixing model in R (SIAR) results showed that combustion-related emissions contributed 77.5% and 76.6% to the TC of fine particles in winter and summer, respectively. Additionally, the lowest δ13C-TC values were observed in summertime fine particles; plant physiological activity was identified as an important source of fine particulate TC in summer and contributed 12.4% to fine particulate TC. For coarse particles, higher δ13C-TC values and Ca2+ and Na+ concentrations but lower TC concentrations implied significant contributions from natural emissions (29.2% in winter and 44.3% in summer) to coarse particulate TC. This study underscores that instead of fossil fuels and biomass, clean energy can decrease 45–78% of aerosol TC at Haikou. In addition, our results also provide a dataset for making environmental policy and optimizing the energy structure, which further favors the sustainable development of air quality.

Exploring the relationship between personal exposure to multiple water-soluble components and ROS in size-resolved PMs in solid fuel combustion households

Water-soluble species are the main components of particulate matters (PMs), which have important impacts on visibility, climate change and human health. Here, personal exposure (PE) to size-resolved PMs from housewives using different solid fuels (biomass and coal) was collected during winter in rural Yuncheng city, Fenwei Plain, China. The concentrations of water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were higher in the biomass group than coal group, whereas the concentrations of water-soluble inorganic ions and water-soluble nitrogen were higher in the coal group than biomass group. Almost all measured water-soluble components in both groups showed a pattern of increasing concentration with decreasing particle size, with more than 50% of WSOC and water-soluble total nitrogen (WSTN) enriched in PM0.25. The Pearson correlation result was in general agreement with the relationship between water-soluble components and ROS found by random forest model. There was a strong positive correlation between ROS and WSOC in PMs in the coal group, especially in PMs <0.25μm, which may be due to the emission of a large number of transition metals chelated with WSOC from coal combustion. The contribution of Cl- and F- to ROS was greater in the biomass group. NO2- in both coal and biomass groups had a decent positive effect on ROS generation. The strongest positive linear correlation (R=0.95) between ROS and K+ in total suspended particulates in the biomass group, whereas there was almost no contribution of K+ to ROS when particle size was distinguished or in random forest model, which reflects the specificity of K+ in inducing ROS. The present study provides new insights for a deeper exploration of the relationship between water-soluble components and oxidative potential in PE PMs from domestic combustion sources.

Variations of dissolved trace elements in precipitation and stream water in Japanese forest area: additional evidence of changing air pollution in the region

Trace elements released into the atmosphere by human activities, such as fossil fuel combustion, flow into forest ecosystems via wet and dry deposition and can flow out via mountainous stream water. The Kajikawa catchment site in Niigata Prefecture, located on the Sea of Japan side in central Japan, suffers from large amounts of acidic substance deposition due to its geographical conditions and meteorological seasonality and is affected by transboundary air pollution originating from the Asian continent due to northwesterly seasonal winds in winter. This study determined the concentrations of trace elements dissolved in precipitation and stream water to comprehensively evaluate the effects of transboundary air pollution on forest ecosystems. The results showed that the concentrations of trace elements and major inorganic ions in precipitation tended to be high in winter and low in summer. The fluxes of many trace elements also increased in winter, reflecting high precipitation amount. Except for Sr, the enrichment factors of the highly enriched trace elements did not show clear seasonality. Therefore, they were continuously influenced by anthropogenic activities. Furthermore, the stable Pb isotope ratio changed significantly during the observation period; however, this was not explained by seasonal changes. This study revealed that trace elements are transported to the Sea of Japan side in central Japan, especially in winter; however, their quantity and content change in response to changes in local and transboundary air pollution.Graphical

Comparative Physiological and Gene Expression Analyses Provide Insights into Ion Transports and Osmotic Adjustment of Sweet Sorghum under Salt Stress

Sweet sorghum is an important sugar crop and forage with a strong tolerance to soil salinity. We have previously analyzed the ion accumulation traits and transcriptome of a sweet sorghum cultivar under NaCl treatments. However, the mechanisms underlying Na+, K+, Cl−, and NO3− transports and the osmotic adjustment of sweet sorghum under salt stresses need further investigations. In this study, the growth, photosynthesis, inorganic ion and organic solute contents, and leaf osmotic adjustment ability of the sweet sorghum cultivars “Lvjuren” and “Fengtian” under NaCl treatments were determined; meanwhile, the expressions of key genes associated with the Na+, K+, Cl−, and NO3− transport were analyzed using the qRT-PCR method. The results showed that NaCl treatments more severely inhibited the growth and photosynthesis of “Lvjuren” than those of “Fengtian”. After NaCl treatments, “Fengtian” could more efficiently restrict the overaccumulation of Na+ and Cl− in leaf blades than “Lvjuren” by withholding large amounts of Na+ in the roots or reserving high quantities of Cl− in the leaf sheaths, which could be attributed to the upregulated expressions of SbNHX2, SbHKT1;4, SbHKT1;5, SbCLCc, and SbCLCg or the downregulated expression of SbNPF6.4. “Fengtian” exhibited significantly lower leaf osmotic potential but higher leaf water potential and turgor pressure under NaCl treatments, suggesting that the former possessed a stronger osmotic ability than the latter. The contents of K+, NO3−, soluble sugar, and betaine in leaf blades, as well as the contributions of these osmolytes to the leaf osmotic potential, in “Fengtian” were significantly higher than those in “Lvjuren”. In addition, the upregulated expressions of SbAKT1, SbHAK5, SbSKOR, SbNPF3.1, SbNPF6.3, and SbNPF7.3 should be responsible for maintaining K+ and NO3− homeostasis under NaCl treatment. These results lay a foundation for uncovering the salt tolerance mechanisms of sweet sorghum and large-scale cultivation of this species in saline areas.

Study on the phase transformation mechanism and influencing factors of inorganic condensable particulate matter from coal-fired power plants

In this study, the concentration of inorganic ions (SO42-, NH4+, NO3- and NO2-) and morphological characteristics of condensable particulate matter (CPM) were investigated to elucidate the formation mechanism of inorganic CPM from ultra-low emission coal-fired power plants. The concentration of inorganic ions increased with the increase of H2O content and concentration of inorganic gaseous contaminants (SO2, NOX and NH3), and decrease of condensation temperature, indicating the enhancement of heterogenous reaction in the saturated flue gas. Furthermore, NOX and SO2 could undergo redox reactions, leading to an elevation in the concentration of SO42- and NO3-. Additionally, the introduction of NH3 resulted in increased concentrations of SO42-, NO3-, and NO2-, highlighting the significant role of NH3 neutralization in CPM nucleation. The condensation of SO3/sulfuric acid aerosols was enhanced under saturation conditions, and SO2 and SO3/sulfuric acid aerosols could contribute synergistically to the formation of SO42-. Moreover, morphological analysis revealed the presence of both well-aggregated solid CPM and dispersed liquid CPM, confirming the formation of inorganic CPM during fast condensation. Furthermore, the detected CPM were composed of S and O, which identified the significant role of sulfates in the inorganic CPM. These findings provide valuable insights for the control of inorganic CPM in flue gas systems.

Effects of enriched CO2, temperature, and irrigation on soil properties in greenhouse apple tree cultivation

The significant contributions of anthropogenic activity to global warming are evidenced by the increasing average atmospheric temperatures and CO2 concentration. To date, data on the impact of global warming on crops, particularly field-scale fruit growth and the soil environment, remain lacking. Therefore, we conducted a 4-year monitoring experiment on semi-closed apple tree populations cultivated under the present or near-future climate to assess the effects of atmospheric temperature and CO2 concentrations on soil moisture, temperature, and inorganic ion concentration. Apple saplings were grown in three independent environment-controlled greenhouses, namely greenhouses A (GH_A; control), B (GH_B; high-temperature), and C (GH_C; high-temperature and high CO2), representing climate modification experiments. The pH increased by 0.02, 0.20, and 0.12/year for GH_A, GH_B, and GH_C, respectively. In particular, GH_B (standard irrigation plot; STD) showed a significant pH increase of 0.25/year. The EC increased by 0.014 mS/cm/year for GH_A, decreased by -0.010 mS/cm/year for GH_B, and increased by 0.006 mS/cm/year for GH_C, showing no clear overall increasing or decreasing trend. The NO3 concentration increased by 1.2 mg/L/year for GH_A, decreased by 10.2 mg/L/year for GH_B and decreased by 0.7 mg/L/year for GH_C. The apparent activation energy (Ea) ranged from 85.3 to 214.4 (kJ/mol NH4+) and, regardless of watering treatment, GH_A > GH_B > GH_C. The values in STD plots were 1.4 to 1.7 times those in abundant irrigation plots. Using GH_A (STD) as a standard, the soil temperature dependence of the nitrification rate did not change overall at high or low air temperatures with increasing watering (Ea = 150.5 kJ/mol) or heating (Ea = 154.1 kJ/mol). The soil temperature dependence of the nitrification rate did not vary under heating and increased watering (Ea = 89.5 kJ/mol) or under heating, increased watering, and increased CO2 (Ea = 85.3 kJ/mol). This study provides novel insights into determining the environmental impacts of apple tree community soils under near-future climatic conditions.

Thus, the developed method can be applied for the detection of trace urea and other related ions in urea-containing electrolyte products.

Determination of nutrient concentration in liquid culture of cyanobacteria Nostoc sp. by capillary electrophoresis and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

In this work, we demonstrate the use of capillary electrophoresis and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, as competitive methods primarily for ion chromatography, to determine changes in the concentration of small inorganic ions in the Nostoc sp. culture medium. Although macronutrients were analyzed by capillary electrophoresis with conductivity detection, micronutrients were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The different light settings (light intensity and spectral composition) had a visible effect on the culture growth and depletion of calcium, magnesium, and phosphate ions, and iron and manganese elements when comparing the behavior under red or violet light with that under blue light.

Characteristics of Microorganisms and Antibiotic Resistance Genes of the Riparian Soil in the Lanzhou Section of the Yellow River

Riparian soil is a critical area of watersheds. The characteristics of biological contaminants in riparian soil affect the pollution control of the watershed water environment. Thus, the microbial community structure, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in the riparian soil of the Lanzhou section of the Yellow River were investigated by analyzing the characteristics of soil samples collected from farmland, mountains, and industrial land. The results showed that the Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Actinobacteria were the dominant phyla in the riparian soil of Lanzhou section of the Yellow River. The microbial structure in the riparian soil was significantly correlated with the land use type (P &lt; 0.05). The α diversity index of bacterial communities in land types was in the order of farmland &gt; mountain &gt; industry. Sulfonamide-typed ARGs were the most dominant genes in the soil of the Lanzhou section of the Yellow River Basin, among which the sul1 gene had the highest abundance, 20-36 000 times that of other detected ARGs. Moreover, the total absolute abundance of ARGs in industrial soil was the highest. Principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) displayed that the ARGs characteristics had a significant correlation with land types (P &lt; 0.05), and intl1 and tnpA-04 drove the diffuseness of sulfonamide and tetracycline ARGs, respectively. Redundancy analysis (RDA) demonstrated that the content of inorganic salt ions and total phosphorus in the soil of the riparian zone of the Yellow River Lanzhou section were the main environmental factors, modifying the distribution of the microbial structure. Halobacterota and Acidobacteriota were the main microflora that drove the structural change in ARGs.

Coastal areas are often vulnerable to salinity variations, which can significantly affect the surrounding ecosystems and land utilization. The research aims to discern the correlation between TDS, salinity levels, GWL and land use practices in this specific region, employing statistical analysis as a means of quantifying and understanding these relationships. Total dissolved solids (TDS) represent the concentration of inorganic salts, minerals, and ions in water bodies and play a crucial role in the overall water quality of coastal areas. Salinity levels, on the other hand, directly affect TDS and are influenced by factors such as tidal patterns and freshwater input. Groundwater levels affect salinity and TDS. Land use practices, including agricultural, residential, and industrial activities, profoundly impact coastal ecosystems and are often influenced by salinity levels. This study utilizes statistical methods to analyze the complex interplay between TDS, salinity, GWL, and land use in the Kebumen Regency coastal region. By examining data related to TDS, salinity, GWL, and land utilization, this research seeks to contribute valuable insights into the sustainable management of coastal environments. The findings of this study are expected to inform decision-making processes for the benefit of local communities and ecosystems, guiding future policies and practices for the preservation and balanced development of coastal areas in Kebumen Regency

Characteristics, source analysis, and health risk of PM2.5 in the urban tunnel environment associated with E10 petrol usage.

The increase in the number of motor vehicles has intensified the impact of traffic sources on air quality. Our aim was to illustrate the characteristics of PM2.5 emissions from vehicles fueled with E10 (a blend of 10% ethanol and 90% gasoline). A 21-day PM2.5 sampling in a fully enclosed urban tunnel and the component analysis were completed, and the characteristics, sources, and health risks of tunnel PM2.5 were studied. Moreover, the PM2.5 pH and its sensitivity were investigated by the thermodynamic model (ISORROPIA-II). In addition, exposure models were used to assess the health risks of different heavy metals in PM2.5 to humans through respiratory pathways. The two-point Cu/Sb ratio (entrance: 4.0 ± 1.4; exit: 4.4 ± 1.7) was close to the diagnostic criteria indicating a significant impact from brake wear. NO3-, NH4+, and SO42- constituted the main components of water-soluble ions in PM2.5 of the tunnel, accounting for 83.0-84.6% of the total concentration of inorganic ions. The organic carbon/elemental carbon ratio of the tunnel was greater than 2, indicating that the contribution of gasoline vehicle exhaust was significant. The average emission factors of PM2.5 in the fleet was 31.4 ± 16.6 mg/(veh·km). The pH value of PM2.5 in a tunnel environment (4.6 ± 0.3) was more acidic than that in an urban environment (4.9 ± 0.6). The main sensitive factors of PM2.5 pH in the urban atmosphere and tunnel environment were total ammonia (sum of gas and aerosol, NH3) and temperature, respectively. The results of the health risk assessment showed that Pb posed a potential carcinogenic risk, while As and Cd presented unacceptable risks for tunnel workers. The non-carcinogenic risk index of heavy metals of PM2.5 in the tunnel environment exceeded the safety threshold.
