Decentralization of power in Ukraine is one of the priority reforms of the modern state system, which has caused serious changes in the financial and innovation policy of territorial communities, and also acts as an institutional basis for the economic progress of territories, which requires an in-depth analysis of the financial capacity of territorial units and their innovative activity to identify potential and threats on the way to sustainable development. The purpose of the research is theoretical substantiation and development of management approaches to eliminate financial and innovative challenges of territorial units in conditions of decentralization of power, in particular in Transcarpathian region, as well as providing practical recommendations on strengthening local budgets and promoting innovative progress. The object of the research is the financial self-sufficiency and innovative activity of the territorial units of Ukraine, in particular the Transcarpathian region. The methods of the research used in the research are general scientific methods, in particular, historical, dialectical, comparative, phenomenological, systemic analysis and the method of generalization. The hypothesis of the research is that effective management of financial resources and purposeful development of innovative activity in territorial communities will contribute to stable economic growth in conditions of decentralization. The statement of basic materials. The decentralization of power in Ukraine has led to significant changes in the financial and innovation policy of territorial communities, providing greater autonomy in the management of local budgets and increasing responsibility for their effective use. In Transcarpathian region, the reform process took place more slowly due to the uneven distribution of resources and economic assets, which limited the even development of communities. Despite these difficulties, decentralization has created conditions for strengthening financial independence and stimulating innovation at the local level. During 2021-2022, a general increase in revenues to the budgets of territorial communities was observed, in particular due to the contributions of six districts of Transcarpathia, which confirms the positive impact of the reform on economic development. However, the war in Ukraine negatively affected the financial capacity of communities, creating new challenges that require innovative solutions and adaptation to ensure sustainable economic growth. The originality and practical significance of the research lies in the development of management mechanisms for overcoming financial and innovative challenges of territorial communities, in particular in the Transcarpathian region. Conclusions and perspectives of further research. Decentralization of power is a positive change for the financial and innovative development of territorial communities, as it has managed to significantly increase their self-sufficiency. Further scientific research should focus on a more detailed thorough analysis of the impact of decentralization on the financial capacity of territorial communities of the Transcarpathian region, as well as an assessment of the effectiveness of existing and potential innovative strategies at the local level.

Laying the Groundwork: Insights from Organisational Ethics for Humanitarian Innovation

Humanitarian innovation is occurring in a wide range of organisational contexts, from innovation labs and hubs, to specialised units within humanitarian organisations, to small social innovation startups and through intersectoral partnerships. Ethical considerations associated with innovation activities have been the source of increased discussion, including critiques around inclusion in the definition of problems, imposition of solutions, introduction of new risks for people in crisis situations and potential for exploitation. To promote ethical innovation, various initiatives have sought to articulate guiding values and to create resources and frameworks to integrate values in project design and implementation. A distinctive yet complementary line of ethical analysis is offered by the approach of positive organisational ethics, which considers the features of organisations that promote and sustain conditions supportive of ethical action. In this paper we examine three dimensions of an organisation’s ethical infrastructure: the resources that are established, such as policies and statements of organisational values; the practices that are enacted, such as methods of onboarding new staff; and the capacities that are fostered and accessed, including ethics knowledge and skills. Attention to these features constitutes an important means of laying the groundwork for organisational conditions that are supportive of ethical humanitarian innovation.

Geography of research networks in the Big South of Russia

The geography of research and innovation activity is a traditional topic of research in human geography. Classical studies of the clustering and diffusion of innovation in the 1960s and 70s received a new impetus in the 21st century with the understanding of the openness of innovation and the importance of interregional collaborative networks. Digitalization has played an important role, providing access to new sources of large geocoded data on the movement of key elements of the knowledge economy, including publications as a formalized outcome of scientific activity. The purpose of the article is to identify the center-periphery research ties of one of the largest macroregions of Russia – the Big South of Russia. The aim was to assess the territorial patterns of interregional research networks with the identification of gravity poles and interconnections at the local and national levels. The study uses the method of spatial scientometrics. Geocoded data on publications from the Scopus bibliographic database were used. In the course of the study the hypotheses of “Moscow-centricity” and “St. Petersburg-centricity” of the knowledge domain of the macroregion are tested, the influence of the factor of geographical proximity and the role of the diversity of interregional ties are evaluated, and the “heights-lowlands” of the landscape are revealed. The results of the research have shown a high degree of connectivity between the regions of the Big South of Russia in the research area. The hypothesis about the presence of several centers of gravity of scientific activity in the macroregion was confirmed. First of all, the peaks of the “scientific ridge” of the Big South form Rostov oblast with the largest urban agglomeration in the south of the country, the Rostov urban agglomeration, as well as the Krasnodar krai and Volgograd oblast. The hypothesis of the existence of several centers of scientific activity in the macroregion was confirmed. The influence of the factor of territorial proximity in the formation of research ties is not high and is manifested mainly in the southern Russian regions with relatively low indicators of research output (primarily, it is typical for national republics). Interregional research cooperation between advanced regions is not limited to immediate geographical proximity but is due to a combination of non-territorial factors. The “Moscow-centricity” of the scientific agenda of the regions of the Big South of Russia is true for most of the southern regions of the Russian Federation, which is particularly pronounced in regions with low internal scientific potential and in new regions undergoing a period of transformation of their scientific systems.

Integration of Indian inventor networks in global value chains in pharmaceuticals industry

ABSTRACT The network approach of value chain analysis examines the role and centrality of various actors and their interrelationships with other actors, besides establishing the role of external linkages in this process. This paper tries to combine the effect of research networks on the geographic dispersion of innovative activity in the Indian pharmaceutical industry. We use activity-wise data from USPTO's patents to establish the level of integration of Indian innovative firms in the pharmaceutical global value chain. Using Tobit analysis, we examine the nature of the collaborative pattern of firms and establish whether this pattern of the inventor network level translates to integration into global networks in terms of geographic dispersion. We analyse the geographic dispersion of inventor networks as a function of the characteristics of the innovative actors that coordinate their inventive work. We show the level of integration of Indian innovative firms in the pharmaceuticals global value chain and assess the structure of these research networks. This helped contextualize firms' roles by contrasting them with other institutional types. The level of integration of Indian firms is low in terms of the geographic dispersal of innovation networks, while the private universities and public research centres are more geographically dispersed.

The Influence of Shared Leadership on the Innovative Behavior of New Generation Faculty

This quantitative study examined the influence of shared leadership on the innovative behavior of the new generation faculty within the context of Chinese higher education institutions. Conducted across various universities in Guangdong Province, China, the research engaged a sample of 340 new generation faculty members. Utilizing a survey method, the study evaluated the faculty’s perceptions of shared leadership, encompassing dimensions such as team progress, authority and responsibility sharing, team expectations, and team contract. Additionally, the survey captured data on the innovative behaviors of faculty, including innovation discovery, innovation proclivity, innovation reinforcement, and innovation cooperation. The findings indicated that the new generation faculty placed significant value on shared leadership aspects, particularly team progress and team expectations. The study revealed that the faculty demonstrated a commendable level of innovative behavior, yet there was room for further enhancement in both shared leadership practices and innovative actions. The research established that a combination of career values related to shared leadership significantly predicts the professional development of faculty in terms of innovation. The study’s implications are vital for educational administrators and policymakers, emphasizing the necessity to foster shared leadership environments conducive to nurturing faculty innovation. By recognizing the predictive role of shared leadership in shaping innovative behaviors, educational institutions can strategize more effectively to promote academic excellence and drive educational reforms.

Fully Printed and Sweat-Activated Micro-Batteries with Lattice-Match Zn/MoS2 Anode for Long-Duration Wearables.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries with superior operational safety have great promise to serve as wearable energy storage devices. However, the poor cycling stability and low output voltage limited their practical applications. Here, fully printable Zn/MoS2-MnO2 micro-batteries are developed and demonstrated significantly enhanced cycling stability with sweat activation. 2D MoS2 is utilized to enable lattice-matching with Zn powders to realize printed Zn anodes with desirable stability and promote electron/ion transfer. Interestingly, the mild acid epidermal sweat also contributed to eliminating the MnO2 cathode by-products and compensating for the hydrogel electrolytes' water loss. The Zn/MoS2-MnO2 micro-batteries achieve a high specific capacity of 318.9µAhcm-2 at the current density of 0.16mAcm-2, and an energy density of 424.6µWhcm-2, with remarkable cycle stability of ≈90% after 250 cycles. In-battery electrochromic display of capacity level and feasible electronics charging are demonstrated. The as-printed micro-batteries with innovative sweat activation would inspire the advances of sustainable power supply for wearables.

The Mediating Effect of Teachers’ Collective Innovativeness Between School Climate and Job Satisfaction

<p style="text-align:justify">Since psychological satisfaction is influenced by the interaction between individuals and their environment, it is necessary to create a cooperative climate at the organizational level and strengthen collective innovativeness at the individual level to improve teachers' job satisfaction. Therefore, the study investigated whether collective innovativeness can be mediated by the school climate to enhance teacher job satisfaction. This study extensively examined survey data with a sample of 3,976 teachers in Shanghai through Structural Equation Modeling, obtained from Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS). The findings revealed that teachers' collective innovativeness served as a significant mediator between school climate and job satisfaction. Furthermore, higher levels of collective innovativeness among teachers amplified the influence of school climate on their job satisfaction. These findings show that schools should strive to foster a collaborative school climate and provide support for teachers in implementing innovative and collaborative teaching activities with the aim of enhancing their job satisfaction. Above all, efforts are needed to support teachers' active and cooperative practice capabilities in building teacher-student relationships.</p>

Relationship between human capital and entrepreneurship orientation from the intellectual capital perspective of innovative literacy

PurposeThis study measures the relationship between human capital and innovative literacy from the perspective of intellectual capital. For this purpose, the relationship between human capital and innovative literacy was first investigated to measure intellectual capital. Subsequently, the moderating effect of entrepreneurial orientation on the influence of innovative literacy on human capital was also analysed.Design/methodology/approachThis study analyses the relationship between innovative literacy, human capital and entrepreneurial orientation through structural equation modelling – the study sample comprised 457 participants in Türkiye.FindingsThe results suggest a positive relationship between human capital, a sub-component of intellectual capital and innovative literacy. Innovative literacy can influence intellectual capital and increase value. Our finding further confirms that entrepreneurial orientation has no moderating effect on the same relationship.Research limitations/implicationsDespite the observed correlation between IL and HC growth, this study had some limitations. First, the generalisability of the findings is limited because the sample was selected from individuals with a high level of education in Türkiye. Despite these limitations, this study has important theoretical and practical implications for developing countries. Türkiye is a developing country, and the selected sample is the most critical database in the country for an Innovative Literacy Scale. However, future research could focus on whether there is a potential source of bias and collect and compare data from heterogeneous workers. In addition, research on existing research frameworks in other countries may consider varying levels of education and business sectors. This research aims to be a pioneering initiative towards the advancement of IL. The question of whether IL should be considered equivalent to or a subset of HC, which has been previously proposed as a dimension of IC, can be clarified through a thorough examination of what IL means.Practical implicationsIn a theoretical framework, transforming human capital into value through innovations derived from innovative literacy activities will significantly increase the company's intellectual capital. Organizations in which innovative literacy play an important role achieve organizational goals, strengthen commitment and contribute to sustainability through the emergence of new potential innovative individuals. This research also contributes significantly to the existing literature. Initially regarding theoretical implications, this study examines the concept of innovative literacy in the existing literature on intellectual capital, human capital and entrepreneurial orientation. Additionally, this study offers a new perspective on intellectual capital.Social implicationsThe findings of this research also provide managerial outcomes. Initially, the assessment of concepts, research and development capabilities and efficient knowledge management are indicators of innovative literacy proficiency at the individual level. Human capital is a subcomponent of intellectual capital and refers to knowledge, skills and experience. Innovative and literate team members should be developed in order to strengthen the intellectual capital structure of an organization.Originality/valueThis study contributes to understanding innovative literacy from an intellectual capital perspective using the Innovative Literacy Scale to reveal important dimensions that influence innovative literacy. Using a measurement tool with new sub-dimensions not included in the extant literature on intellectual capital is unique. This study suggests that scholars should include innovative literacy – a distinct subset of intellectual capital – in their body of knowledge on human capital. Our findings have the potential to help meet the needs of human resource departments, researchers, educational institutions, public institutions and enterprises.

Implementing creative dance activities for primary school children to improve health and wellbeing: a qualitative study in the North East England.

Evidence suggests that group arts activities with children build resilience and positive mental wellbeing. However, insufficient attention has been paid to how such activities can be implemented in practice across different contexts, particularly in socio-economically disadvantaged areas. Therefore, we explored the implementation of a dance-based intervention in two primary schools situated in an area of high economic deprivation in North East England. Our study explored Year 1 (age 5-6) and Year 5 (age 9-10) children, their parents, teachers and dance artists' views of a creative dance intervention (South Tees Arts project; STAR) in two schools in North East England, using interviews and focus groups, combined with innovative data capture activities (i.e. movement activities, graffiti walls, songs and Vox Pops). Children felt that STAR contributed positively to their emotional wellbeing and physical health. Teachers noticed improved confidence, engagement, literacy, and social and motor skills and less disruptive behaviour in class. Benefits continued beyond school, with children exercising at home to practice their dance moves. Several implementation barriers were identified ranging from limited time, large classes, dealing with challenging behaviours, the impact of COVID-19, stigma and anxiety. In response to these challenges, several solutions were developed during project delivery, such as artists and children working in pairs and role modelling by teachers and dance artists. We found three underlying mechanisms for successful implementation: (1) constant communication between teachers, dance artists and parents was essential to managing challenging behaviours, building personal relationships with children, and helping parents to get involved and support their children at home. (2) Linking dance activities to the school curriculum (using narratives from existing reading schemes) helped to support skill gaps. (3) A strong ethos of partnership between school, dance and arts providers and researchers ensured the adaptability and flexibility of projects.

FACTORS AFFECTING INDONESIAN PADDY HARVEST FAILURE: A COMPARISON OF BETA REGRESSION, QUASI-BINOMIAL REGRESSION, AND BETA MIXED MODELS

The Paddy harvest failure rate is one of the key aspects in determining the total number of claims in a crop insurance policy. It is also an important factor indicating the fulfillment of targeted total production. Therefore, we proposed Beta Regression, Quasi Binomial Regression, and Beta Mixed Models which can be used to analyze significant variables affecting paddy harvest failure rates. Model selection and evaluations indicated that the Nested Beta Mixed Model is the best. Previous research has shown four significant fixed effect variables: drought, flood, pests, and disease risks. Pests and other types of risks also affect the variability of loss rate. All variables have positive effects, indicating higher values cause a higher possibility of a higher average harvest failure rate. High variability was shown for province, municipality, and farmers' random effects. Hence, to prevent a more significant loss rate, MoA should consider more intensive and innovative participatory activities in farmer groups to enhance good farming practices, especially for farmers who suffer from certain risks. These activities should also consider the local characteristics of each province or municipality. As for AUTP development and improvement, farmers with lower failure risks could be given a discounted premium to make it more appealing.

Optimizing Urban Technological Innovation through GGFs: A Systemic and Spatial Analysis

The implementation of the Government Guides Funds (GGFs) policy by China’s government plays an important role in guiding domestic private capital to participate in innovation and entrepreneurship activities. This study empirically analyzed the impact of GGFs in facilitating the domestic optimization process of urban innovation in China. Based on panel data from 285 cities from 2008 to 2021, this study uses the Spatial Durbin Model (SDM) to verify the impact of GGFs on urban innovation and its mechanism. The findings reveal that GGFs exert a positive influence on the urban innovation of both the immediate regions and the neighboring areas of the policy-origin city. The effectiveness of GGFs varies geographically, with more pronounced spatial spillover impacts observed in the eastern regions of China. Further research shows that industrial upgrading amplifies the direct impact of GGFs on urban innovation, while its indirect effectiveness is not significant. Finally, based on empirical findings, this study also underscores the necessity of local governments in tailoring the management of GGFs to local conditions and promoting sustainable urban innovation and regional development. Our findings provide noteworthy implications for governmental administrators and regulators in promoting the systemic optimization of GGFs operations within the context of sustainable urban development.

Innovation and Demand as Drivers of Labour Productivity: An Integrated Analysis for OECD Countries

ABSTRACT The article seeks to empirically reconcile two strands of research on the determinants of labour productivity growth: on one hand, the Kaldorian literature emphasises the role of autonomous demand; on the other hand, the Schumpeterian literature underscores the role of innovative investments. Specifically, we test two hypotheses. Firstly, we investigate whether demand shocks, private research intensity, and public R&D expenditure influence labour productivity when these variables are considered simultaneously. Secondly, we examine whether private research intensity is affected by demand shocks and public investments in innovation. We make use of a panel of 12 OECD countries spanning the period from 1986 to 2017. We combine the Local Projection approach with structural shocks estimated through Structural Vector Autoregressive modelling. Findings show a positive impact of government R&D investment, demand shocks, and private research intensity on labour productivity. Additionally, when examining the effects of demand shocks and innovative activities by the public sector on research intensity, the results affirm a positive impact of these variables, thus supporting the presence of the Schmooklerian demand-pull hypothesis. These results remain robust across various model specifications and different measures of labour productivity.

Development and activation of the innovative potential of the Russian economy: regional features, structural priorities, levels of implementation

Relevance. The idea of developing and implementing innovative solutions in various spheres of society implies the existence of ways to find such solutions, their active use and improvement. For this reason, the essence of innovative thinking on the scale of both a single enterprise and the state as a whole requires appropriate provision.The purpose of the research is a comprehensive analysis of the chronological cross-section of the level of innovative development of the subjects of the Russian Federation in the context of multiple global economic and political crises and the internal activation of strategic innovative trends in the formats of lawmaking and modernization.Objectives. To achieve this goal, within the framework of this study, the current legislative situation regarding the state's innovation policy and its projected consequences were considered; the factors of growth in the level of innovative development of the regions of the Russian Federation in the context of statistical dominants were studied; the complex results of regional innovation activity and the all-Russian state of the innovative sphere of development, production, export and import of goods and services were analyzed.Methodology. The methodological basis of this study is the method of chronological extrapolation analysis of trends with constant adjustment in conditions of the selective nature of the analytical data bank; in addition, a theoretical generalization of the indexed result and a priori trend forecasting within the observation period are used.Results. The general principles of the innovation segment development are the same for the whole state, but their applicability in different regions depends on the degree of their convergence with border territorial entities — the basis of the innovation development strategy is the assessment of regional potential in the sum of all indicators. Nevertheless, there is always the possibility of finding a thematic statistical trend.Conclusions. It is fundamentally important for the innovative development of the state to take into account the specifics of each individual region. With all the variety of means and methods of innovative development at all levels of management, priority is given to only a few. In this case, rating systems are an auxiliary element of management structures.

What hinders the transition towards a bio-based construction sector? A global innovation system perspective on its value chain

The construction sector is heavily polluting and an actual threat to the natural environment, therefore its transition towards becoming bio-based is imperative. This transition is currently unfolding and it is driven in particular by innovation activities taking place along the sector’s value chain. In the upstream segment, bio-based materials are being improved, while novel building techniques in the core segment enable the use of these materials. In this paper, we utilize the global innovation systems (GIS) framework to examine these innovation activities and their valuation dynamics. In particular, we investigate how the GIS of the bio-based construction sector is organized along its value chain, providing insights into the barriers to the sector's sustainability transition. Our empirical analysis, based on a rich set of expert interviews, demonstrates that the GIS configuration changes along the value chain, driven by profound differences in the innovation mode. This situation creates a bottleneck that hinders the sector's transition, where knowledge about bio-based materials developed upstream fails to translate down the value chain. However, we also find that several niche firms cover and integrate multiple value chain segments and overcome this knowledge gap, suggesting that the transition towards a bio-based construction sector could accelerate with further innovation system reconfigurations.

Impact of heterogenous capabilities on export performance amid the digital transformation

We investigate the effects of adopting digital technology on export performance of Korean manufacturing firms amidst the digital transformation. We recognize firm-level capabilities should be closely associated with adoption of rapidly progressing digital technology but also with export performance. And our data indicates that the most common purpose of digital technology adoption is to launch new products to the market. Hence, we consider that technology adoption is a strategic and purposeful decision to gain competitive edge mostly by producing new product, and treating technology adoption exogenous can be misleading. Due to the endogeneity and selection issues in technology adoption, the endogenous switching regression is applied to this study as Coad et al. (2020). On technology adoption decision, we find external innovative resources from strategic alliance in addition to internal innovative capabilities stand out. Given technology adoption decision, internal capabilities like patent rights and international affiliation are complementary factors to export growth. The treatment effect analysis has implications as follows: the result on contribution of technology adoption to export growth for actually adopting firms is rather small, and shows heterogenous innovation, organizational, and external capabilities are still critical factors as much as new products embedding high-end digital technology; the result on non-adopting firms indicates potential of advanced digital technology to improve export performance by helping to produce such new products if they were actually capable to do it. In sum, our findings provide another evidence that structurally positive interaction between innovative activities and export performance as Aw et al. (2011), since adoption of digital technology to products itself is innovative in the digital transformation. Furthermore, the result is consistent with the capability theory in that heterogenous innovative and complementary capabilities determine strategic technology adoption and export performance simultaneously. Finally, our findings indicate that the digital transformation might be still at the early stage. The fact that Korean firms have adopted advanced digital technology mainly for new products can be interpreted as an indicator of early development stage of transformation, since firms concentrate on product innovation than process innovation to gain competitive edge at the early stage (Utterback and Abernathy, 1975). Thus, we expect that further evolution of digital transformation can facilitate process innovation, then contribute to firm performance by improving cost efficiency that should be tackled in the upcoming study.

Exploring the nexus between exports’ economic complexity and institutional quality: insights from Italian provinces

ABSTRACT The present research aims to investigate the determinants of economic development and productivity by proposing an empirical analysis of the economic effects of institutional quality on the economic complexity of export at the intra-national level, focusing on 103 Italian provinces from 2004 to 2016. Using the System Generalised Method of Moments (System-GMM) estimator, the study assesses the influence of various institutional dimensions on provincial economic complexity, as measured by the Economic Complexity Index (ECI). The findings indicate that institutional quality, particularly rule of law, regulatory quality, and voice and accountability, significantly enhances economic complexity. Better formal and informal institutions such as completeness of contracts, social cohesion, contract enforcement, by reducing transaction costs and uncertainty, and by favouring knowledge dissemination and security of investments, are source of comparative advantage in complex industries that lead to diversified and sophisticated production, fostering economic growth and innovation. Moreover, the study emphasises the importance of related activities, which interact with institutions to support complex and innovative export-related activities through knowledge spillovers and related diversification. The analysis also highlights the pivotal role of human capital, social capital, and innovation, which should remain focal points for policymakers.

Innovative Development of Regional Industry: analysis, problems, and prospects (on the example of the Udmurt Republic)

Purpose: the study aims to analyze industrial development in the Udmurtia and propose measures to foster innovation. These efforts may enhance regional manufacturers' order portfolio and enhance the region's competitiveness both nationally and internationally.Methods: the research employs a complex of methods including factual, dynamic, causal, correlation-regression and structural analysis, alongside generalization, comparison, logical analysis, and graphical visualization.Results: the article analyzes the development of the industry in the Udmurtia, known for its strong presence in the military-industrial complex (MIC). The study delves into current industry trends, innovation indicators, and practices of MIC enterprises. It highlights obstacles to innovation and suggests measures to boost innovation, increase output volumes, and bolster the industry's adaptability to emerging challenges.Conclusions and Relevance: the regional enterprises of the manufacturing industry and MIC are the leading producers of innovation in the region. However, the proportion of innovative industrial products in the overall regional output is limited to 10%. Correlation and regression analysis showed the significance of the level of innovative activity of organizations and the share of organizations carrying out technological innovations in the effectiveness of innovative activity in the manufacturing industry. Innovation can be encouraged through various means, such as attracting investments, establishing a regional Agency for Innovation Development, digital platformization, and fostering integration among innovation entities with the help of an innovation accelerator, taking advantage of new market niche opportunities, stimulated by promoting corporate entrepreneurship. The region’s future prospects are closely tied to the development of the high-tech sector of unmanned aerial systems, what is the subject of scientific interest of the author's future research.

Does corporate social responsibility influence corporate innovation in China? Combining innovation investment and dynamic capabilities theory

Purpose According to reputation theory, enterprises that adopt a proactive approach to corporate social responsibility (CSR) are known to actively invest in corporate innovation. However, this theory does not fully explain the mechanisms through which CSR influences corporate innovation, nor does it address how to effectively amplify CSR’s positive impact on innovation. To overcome these limitations, this research aims to incorporate the theories of innovation investment and dynamic capabilities. Innovation investment theory elucidates how CSR can attract additional financing, which can be directed toward innovation activities. Meanwhile, dynamic capabilities theory highlights how digital transformation in enterprises can enhance the positive effects of CSR on innovation, providing insights from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. Design/methodology/approach To demonstrate the mediating role of debt financing costs and the moderating role of enterprise digital transformation in the mechanism of CSR on corporate innovation, this research conducts fixes effects models by collecting 27,912 data points from 3,775A-share China-listed enterprises, ranging in period from 2010 to 2020. Empirical research once again proves that the theories of innovation investment and dynamic capabilities effectively compensates for the shortcomings of reputation theory. These three theories effectively explain that what is the effect of CSR on enterprise innovation? How does CSR influence corporate innovation? And through what mechanisms can CSR better enhance corporate innovation? Findings According to innovation investment theory, the cost of debt financing mediates the positive relationship between CSR and corporate innovation. This occurs because enterprises with robust CSR practices are more likely to secure external funding, thereby reducing their costs associated with external debt financing. Lower debt financing costs provide a stable source of funds for corporate innovation. Additionally, dynamic capability theory suggests that enterprise digital transformation moderates the positive relationship between CSR and corporate innovation. Building on these insights, it is recommended that enterprises, especially state-owned ones, should prioritize technological innovation to enhance their competitiveness. Research limitations/implications This research aims to address and narrow the knowledge gap regarding the relation between CSR and corporate innovation through theoretical and empirical analyses. With respect to the influence mechanism, this research solely based on innovation investment theory and dynamic capabilities theory, focuses on the influence mechanism of CSR on corporate innovation, with the debt financing costs as the mediating variable and digital transformation as the moderating variable. However, the influence mechanism turns out to be complicated and there is room for further exploring numerous mechanisms. For example, future research can focus on identifying additional channels through which CSR exerts an influence on corporate innovation based on TOE theoretical framework. Practical implications This research presents several strategies to enhance corporate innovation based on its conclusions: First, enterprises should promptly publish social responsibility reports to build a positive industry reputation. Moreover, by actively participating in CSR activities, they can strengthen their networks and enhance their industry standing. Second, the significant mediating role of debt financing costs should not be ignored. Enterprises are encouraged to seek diverse financing channels to reduce financial pressures, address financing challenges and facilitate the coordinated development of CSR and innovation. Third, enterprise digital transformation significantly affects the impact of CSR on innovation. Therefore, enterprises should advance digital transformation initiatives that incorporate technological innovation, organizational improvements and integration with supply chain partners. Finally, it has been noted that state-owned enterprises are often less responsive to technological innovation than their non-state counterparts. SOEs could redefine the scope and priorities of their social responsibilities to prevent excessive resource consumption that could hinder innovation. For instance, integrating some of their social responsibilities with innovation projects could promote both social and technological innovation objectives. Additionally, the government could ensure fair resource distribution among different types of enterprises and provide an equitable financing platform to mitigate financial challenges for both state-owned and non-state-owned enterprises. Originality/value Reputation theory does not fully elucidate the mechanisms by which CSR influences corporate innovation or how to effectively enhance CSR’s positive impact on innovation. This research integrates the theories of innovation investment and dynamic capabilities to address these gaps. According to innovation investment theory, debt financing costs mediate the positive relationship between CSR and corporate innovation. Meanwhile, dynamic capabilities theory posits that enterprise digital transformation moderates this positive relationship, further strengthening the impact of CSR on innovation.

Exploring the co-creation-innovativeness paradox: distance as an ecosystem characteristic of university spin-offs

Through empirical investigations into university spin-offs (USOs), we discovered innovativeness benefits derived from maintaining both academia and business partners at a distance. Distance should not be misconstrued as isolation; rather, it emphasises specific attributes where partners are maintained at arm’s length, affecting co-creation. Consequently, this paper explores how distance impacts the co-creation and innovativeness of USOs. It presents a longitudinal case study of a Swedish USO and conceptualises various types of distances, including actor-type, industry, supply-chain, geographical and knowledge-related distances. We explore the interplay between these different distance types as antecedents to USOs’ innovativeness and co-creation activities. The paper contributes to the existing literature by introducing the concept of distance as a critical characteristic affecting innovativeness and co-creation. By delineating various types of distances, it refines previous research on the characteristics of firm connections within university and business ecosystems.
