Knowledge in the Area of Prevention and Treatment of Pressure Injuries Among Nurses: Report from the Study.

Introduction: Pressure injuries represent a significant issue in nursing care, with prevalence rates ranging from 5 to 27% among hospitalized patients and 3-32% in long-term care settings. Nurses' knowledge of pressure injury prevention and treatment plays a crucial role in reducing their incidence. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess nurses' knowledge of pressure injury prevention and treatment, taking into account their professional and postgraduate education, self-directed learning activities, and interest in wound care. Materials and Methods: This study included 500 nurses working in hospital wards and primary healthcare settings who participated in specialized nursing training programs. The Pieper-Zulkowski Pressure Ulcer Knowledge Test (PZ-PUKT), in its 2021 version and adapted into Polish was used to assess the nurses' knowledge. The main study was conducted over five months, from March to July 2024. Results: This study revealed that nurses' knowledge of pressure injury prevention and treatment was above average, with a mean score of 49.6 ± 5.2. Conclusions: The level of knowledge among the nurses assessed using the Polish version of the PZ-PUKT was above average. The PZ-PUKT test can be a useful tool for evaluating pressure injury knowledge among both nursing students and employed nurses and may serve as a means for identifying knowledge gaps in pressure injury prevention and treatment.

Intensive care nurses’ knowledge of pressure injury prevention

BackgroundPressure injuries (PIs) remain a significant public health concern due to their high prevalence among critically ill patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs). Despite advancements in science and technology related to PI prevention, the prevalence continues to rise. A key factor contributing to this rise is inadequate knowledge and limited use of evidence-based practices by nurses, resulting in prolonged hospital stays and poor patient outcomes. This study aimed to determine the knowledge of intensive care nurses regarding pressure injury prevention.MethodsA descriptive cross-sectional design was used to collect data from 101 nurses working in four ICUs at an academic hospital in Gauteng Province, South Africa. The revised Pressure Ulcer Knowledge Assessment Tool (PUKAT 2.0) was utilized to gather data from a convenience sample of intensive care nurses. Descriptive and inferential statistics were employed to analyze the data, with statistical tests including the Shapiro-Wilk test, univariate and multivariate linear regression, and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient tests. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant.ResultsThe mean knowledge score of the nurses (N = 101) was 42.16% (SD 12.09), indicating poor knowledge of PI prevention. The lowest scores were observed in the areas of “prevention of pressure injuries” (25%) and “classification and observation” (39.5%). Higher levels of education (14.00; 95% CI 2.90–25.11; p = 0.014), seniority (15.58; 95% CI 2.92–28.24; p = 0.016), and years of experience (6.38; 95% CI 9.70–5.45; p = 0.039) were statistically significant predictors of better prevention and management of PI.ConclusionThe findings of this study demonstrate that intensive care nurses have poor knowledge of prevention measures, classification, and observation of stages. This may hinder their ability to effectively utilize risk assessment tools in clinical practice. Improving training and providing intensive care nurses with adequate information about evidence-based practices to prevent PI could strengthen their contribution to patient safety. These findings underscore the need for continuous, mandatory training programs for intensive care nurses to stay updated with the latest evidence and practices in PI prevention.

A Cross-Sectional Survey of Anesthesiologists' Awareness Toward Traumatic Dental Injuries During General Anesthesia in Syrian Arab Republic.

Traumatic dental injuries with tracheal intubation during general anesthesia are considered one of the most common complications. It is also the primary reason for malpractice legal claims against anesthesiologists according to insurance companies. There is much information regarding the incidence, consequences, and risk factors of traumatic dental injuries during general anesthesia. This study aimed to assess the awareness (knowledge, practice, and attitude) of anesthetists regarding peri-anesthetic traumatic dental injuries and discuss measures to reduce the risk regarding peri-anesthetic traumatic dental injuries. Sixty seven anesthetists participated in this cross-sectional survey between January 2023 and July 2023, which was carried out in the Syrian Arab Republic. The questionnaire was generated using Google Forms and sent individually, as the researcher (MNA) was accompanied by all included anesthesiologists while filling out all the questionnaire paragraphs to answer any questions. The Fisher exact test and Pearson's Chi-squared test were used to analyze the results. The dental trauma caused by the anesthetists during their professional careers was 38.8%, and none of them were exposed to any legal claim. 77.6% of the anesthetists thought that avulsed permanent teeth could be replanted, 46.2% believed that the procedure must be done in < 30 min, and 84.6% thought they could not do it themselves and would send the patient to a dentist after the procedure. More than half of respondents (63.5%) indicated that the sterile saline solution was the best storage medium for avulsed teeth. Furthermore, 74.6% of anesthetists stated that emergency intubations are related to more traumatic dental injuries in comparison with elective intubation and about 62% were aware of the importance of mouthguard. However, nearly 57% complained about the shortage of knowledge related to the oral cavity and its special structure. Syrian anesthetists have limited awareness (knowledge, practice, and attitude) of traumatic dental injury classification, prevention, and management. More information and training are still needed about factors used within clinical dentistry.

Unlocking Excellence: Improving Nursing Students' Knowledge of Pressure Injury Prevention through an Escape Room Experience.

To determine if an escape room game approach, which has emerged as a novel and engaging education tool, is an effective method to improve nursing students' knowledge of pressure injury (PI) prevention and attitudes toward the care of patients with a PI. This study evaluated 33 university nursing students using a quasi-experimental pretest/posttest design. Students completed five questionnaires before the escape room experience and again 1 month after. After the intervention, the students' mean scores on their self-reported PI knowledge level, Pressure Ulcer Knowledge Assessment Tool 2.0, Pressure Injuries Prevention Knowledge Questionnaire, and Attitude towards Pressure Ulcer Prevention Instrument all significantly increased (Ps < .001). Further, the mean score on the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory was significantly lower postintervention (P < .001), indicating decreased anxiety. The results indicate that the escape room game approach is an effective method to improve nursing students' knowledge of PI prevention and attitudes toward the care of patients with PIs. This method also improved students' knowledge retention by promoting facilitated learning in solving complex cases.

Assessing the knowledge and attitudes of semi-professional netball players in the Western Cape district regarding netball injuries: a cross-sectional study.

Netball, with its dynamic movements, poses a high injury risk, notably to the ankles and knees. This study examined the injury knowledge and attitudes of semi-professional netball players in the Western Cape, South Africa. In this study 117 semi-professional female netball players from eight clubs in the Western Cape district were conveniently sampled. A self-administered researcher-generated questionnaire collected data on the players' sociodemographic characteristics, as well as their knowledge and attitudes regarding netball injuries. Independent samples t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and the χ2 tests were employed for data analyses. Results showed that most players (62.4%) had good knowledge of injury prevention and recovery, though a minority held negative attitudes (39.0% and 29.0%, respectively). Those with over three years of experience demonstrated superior knowledge (85.7%) and more positive attitudes (61.9% and 71.4%). Conversely, a minority (37.6%) exhibited poor knowledge, while a majority (61.00%) displayed positive attitudes. Furthermore, a moderate positive correlation (r=0.552; P<0.001) was observed between overall knowledge and attitudes towards injury prevention and recovery. While most semi-professional netball players possess adequate injury knowledge, those with longer experience show more positive attitudes. Establishing educational programs emphasizing injury prevention and recovery could benefit players, especially those starting later in life, promoting both knowledge and positive attitudes towards injury management.

High school rugby coaches’ knowledge and opinions of concussion in KwaZulu Natal province in South Africa: an ecological cross-sectional study

BackgroundConcussions in Rugby Union are common with an increased risk to adolescent players. Coaches are key to injury prevention and a greater understanding of their knowledge and sentiments may guide future initiatives. There is a lack of data on rugby coaches, especially in South Africa. This study aimed to investigate the knowledge and opinions of high school rugby coaches regarding concussion management.MethodsThis cross-sectional study of 37 high school rugby coaches in South Africa, was conducted via a self-reported questionnaire. Concussion knowledge was scored for correct answers only with closed-question scaling methods to measure the importance of items of concussion management using a graphical rating scale. An attitude scale (Likert) was used to assess self-reported opinions and behaviours. Associations were calculated for participant characteristics and overall concussion injury knowledge.ResultsMore participants showed good overall knowledge of ≥ 75% (n = 22, 59% vs. n = 15, 40%), especially those with greater coaching experience (p = 0.021). Player welfare was perceived more important than player performance (185 vs. 164), with concussion prevention most important (184 of 185). Appealing characteristics of an injury prevention programme were the improvement of player skill (173, SD ± 0.75, mean 4.68), being adaptable (171, ± 0.86, 4.62), and being completed in the warm-up (167, ± 0.93, 4.51). The biggest perceived barriers were duration (138, ± 1.59, mean 3.73), effort (130, ± 1.56, 3.51), compliance and lack of knowledge (both 127, ± 1.68, 3.43).ConclusionThese results support the implementation of ongoing concussion education for rugby coaches and identify areas for promoting awareness and knowledge of concussion injury prevention, identification, and specific management of younger athletes. Appealing characteristics and barriers are highlighted and may allow for improved implementation and adherence to concussion prevention programmes.

Determination of the family caregivers’level of knowledge on pressure injury prevention

ObjectiveThe purpose of this study is to determine family caregivers’ level of knowledge on pressure injury (PI) prevention. MethodsThis study used a cross-sectional and descriptive design. Data were collected between February and May 2023. The population of the study consisted of family caregivers providing care to patients who were at risk of developing pressure injuries and who were planned to be discharged from the inpatient wards of the hospital. A total of 105 family caregivers participated in the study. ResultsOf all the patients, 61.9 % (n = 65) were female and their average age was 68.96 years (SD = 18.07). While 30.48 % (n = 32) of the patients were bedridden due to Cerebrovascular Accident, 28.57 % (n = 30) were bedridden due to old age, and 28.57 % (n = 30) had PI. Of all the caregivers, 71.43 % (n = 75) were female, and their average age was 47.11 years (SD = 14.85). While 97.14 % (n = 96) of the caregivers had not received any training on PI before, 90.48 % (n = 95) had not provided care to a patient with PI before. Family caregivers scored an average of 22.25 (SD = 6.96) points out of 40 on the Pressure Injury Prevention Knowledge Test (PIPKT). A significant difference was detected between the knowledge test scores and education level and income level (P = 0.006; P = 0.002). ConclusionsFamily caregivers were found to need information about PI prevention. It is recommended to develop content on PI prevention in the guidelines for family caregivers.

Determination of the Knowledge Level of Surgical Intensive Care Nurses in Medical Device Induced Pressure Injury

Aim: The purpose of this study was to measure the level of knowledge and attitudes of nurses in surgical intensive care units (ICUs) about medical device-induced pressure injury. Method: The cross-sectional study was conducted with 227 surgical intensive care nurses in Turkey between November 2022 and June 2023. “Nurse Introduction Form” and “Pressure Ulcer Knowledge Level Assessment Tool Scale” were used as data collection tools. Since the scale score averages did not comply with normal distribution, Mann Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis tests were used in the statistical analysis of the data. Results: It was found that the majority of participants (n=227) were in the age range of 26-33 years (n=115), and 66.1% (n=113) had been working in the ICU for 1-5 years. 51.5% (n=117) of the participants reported having received training in medical device-related pressure injury. In the pressure ulcer knowledge level assessment tool, the mean of the "prevention of pressure ulcers" sub-dimension (mean: 4.74) was found to be the highest, while the total knowledge level score was 14.87±5.6 and it was found that the nurses had a moderate level of knowledge. Conclusion: The findings of the study indicated that nurses' knowledge of medical device-related pressure injuries was inadequate, but that their knowledge of pressure injury prevention increased with increasing levels of education.

ACL Injury Prevention Education Improves Implementation of Neuromuscular Training Among High School Sports Coaches: A Cross-Sectional Survey Study.

Neuromuscular training (NMT) programs delivered by trained personnel have demonstrated protective effects against anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury among high school sports participants, but few studies have investigated the impact of education on high school sports coaches' knowledge and incorporation of NMT programs into daily practice sessions. We sought to evaluate changes in knowledge and behavior among high school sports coaches who completed an NMT-based injury prevention training program. High school sports coaches were invited to complete a free online training course in incorporating NMT into daily practice sessions. Anonymized surveys were administered before and after education and at 3 months to evaluate knowledge level and program effectiveness. Of the 13,640 coaches who enrolled in the training course in 2019, 1641 submitted pre- and post-education and 3-month follow-up surveys. Prior to training, 4.4% reported incorporating NMT into daily training sessions and the mean knowledge score was 1.89 ± 1.55. After training, 92.7% of participants reported that they intended to incorporate NMT into their daily training sessions and the mean knowledge score was 4.87 ± 1.11. At 3-month follow-up, 88.9% of participants reported incorporating NMT into daily training sessions. A chi-square test revealed a significant association between pre- and post-education incorporation of NMT into daily practice sessions, and a multiple regression analysis resulted in a significant model with intent to incorporate NMT into daily practice sessions identified as a significant behavior predictor. These survey results show that completion of a training course significantly improved ACL injury prevention knowledge among a cohort of high school sports coaches and likely contributed to the sustained incorporation of NMT into their daily practice sessions.

Pressure injury prevention in adult critically ill patients: best practice implementation project.

This study assessed compliance with the best practices for pressure injury prevention among ICU patients at a tertiary hospital in São Paulo, Brazil. Intensive care patients are at a high risk of developing a pressure injury; preventing this requires a best practice protocol. This best practice implementation project was developed in a Brazilian tertiary hospital in three phases following the method proposed by the Joanna Briggs Institute. Ten criteria established based on the best available evidence were audited and monitored before and after best practice implementation. The baseline and follow-up audits evaluated 28 patients at each step. A total of 448 h of care were analyzed using a monitoring camera and medical records. Compliance with all 10 audited criteria increased, with a 50% reduction in the prevalence of pressure injuries in intensive care. Of the 223 employees, 71% claimed to have some knowledge of pressure injury prevention, and 66% reported adequate adherence to prevention protocols. The audit and feedback strategy improved compliance with the criteria. Future audits are needed to promote the sustainability of evidence-based practice.

Critical care nurses’ knowledge and attitudes toward pressure injury prevention: A pre and post intervention study

ObjectiveTo explore nurses’ knowledge and attitudes towards pressure injury prevention before and after implementing an educational intervention. Design/MethodA pre-and post-intervention study. Pre-intervention data collection involved administering an instrument, including demographic information, the Pressure Ulcer Knowledge Assessment Tool version 2, and the Attitudes towards Pressure Ulcer Prevention instruments. Following the analysis of pre-intervention data, an educational intervention was implemented. Post-intervention data were collected using the same instrument. SettingIntensive care units at three Saudi Arabian hospitals. Main outcome measuresNurses’ knowledge and attitudes towards pressure injury prevention. ResultsThe pre-intervention phase included 190 participants, and the post-intervention phase included 195 participants. Participants completed a paper-based survey at two different time points between June 2021 and March 2022. The mean pre-intervention scores for nurses’ knowledge and attitudes towards pressure injury prevention were 43.22% and 74.77%, respectively. Following the educational intervention, the knowledge and attitude scores increased significantly to 51.22% and 79.02%, respectively. Higher knowledge of pressure injury prevention was positively associated with positive attitudes towards prevention practices. Age, clinical nursing experience, and experience in intensive care units were identified as factors correlated with knowledge of pressure injury prevention. A Bachelor’s qualification or higher predicted better knowledge and attitudes towards pressure injury prevention. ConclusionsNurses’ knowledge and attitudes towards pressure injury prevention greatly improved following tailored, evidence-based education. The educational intervention featured multiple on-site bedside discussions, case studies, small-group presentations, and the provision of printed resources. Implications for Clinical PracticeNurses’ knowledge and attitudes towards pressure injury prevention should be examined, and education provided to ensure evidence-based prevention practices are implemented. Tailored small-group education sessions delivered conveniently could be an effective approach. Efforts should focus on attracting and retaining experienced, highly qualified nurses to ensure the adoption of evidence-based prevention practices.

Evaluating the effect of child home safety training upon three family support practitioner groups: a mixed-methods study.

Unintentional injuries in the home contribute substantially to preschool child morbidity and mortality. Practitioners such as health visitors, family mentors and children's centre staff are well-positioned to facilitate child injury prevention by providing home safety advice to families, and training may enhance their ability to do so. We aimed to assess the impact of child home safety training for these practitioners. An explanatory mixed-methods design was used. Practitioners completed questionnaires before, and up to 7 months after, receiving child home safety training and took part in interviews. Seventy-eight health visitors, 72 family mentors and 11 children's centre staff members completed questionnaires. Items were used to calculate scores on home safety knowledge, confidence to provide home safety advice and belief that child home safety promotion is important. Thematic analysis of interviews with seven health visitors and nine family mentors, open-ended responses to the questionnaires and an additional evaluation form was conducted to explore attendees' perceptions of the training and its impact. In addition, seven health visitors and six children's centre staff who had received no training were interviewed. Knowledge was greater post-training than pre-training across all participants (p < .001). When practitioner groups were analysed separately, there were significant increases in family mentors' knowledge (p < .001) and belief (p = .016), and health visitors' confidence (p = .0036). Qualitative findings indicated that most training session attendees valued the training, believed their practice relating to child home safety had improved as a result, and felt further similar training sessions would be beneficial. Those who had not attended the sessions described a need for more child home safety training. Delivering training to practitioners providing child home safety promotion to families with preschool children can enhance injury prevention knowledge, beliefs and confidence and positively impact on home safety promotion by practitioners.

Players’, Head Coaches', And Medical Personnels' Knowledge, Understandings and Perceptions of Injuries and Injury Prevention in Elite-Level Women’s Football in Ireland

BackgroundTo manage injuries effectively, players, head coaches, and medical personnel need to have excellent knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours in relation to the identification of risk factors for injuries, the implementation of injury prevention initiatives, as well as the implementation of effective injury management strategies. Understanding the injury context, whereby specific personal, environmental, and societal factors can influence the implementation of injury prevention initiatives and injury management strategies is critical to player welfare. To date, no qualitative research investigating the context of injuries, has been undertaken in elite-level women’s football. The aim of our study was to explore the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours of players, head coaches, and medical personnel in the Irish Women’s National League (WNL) to injury prevention and injury management.MethodsWe used qualitative research methods to explore the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours of players, head coaches, and medical personnel in the Irish WNL to injury prevention and injury management. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken with 17 players, 8 medical personnel, and 7 head coaches in the Irish WNL. The data were analysed using thematic analysis. Our study is located within an interpretivist, constructivist research paradigm.ResultsThe participants had incomplete knowledge of common injuries in elite-level football, and many held beliefs about risk factors for injuries, such as menstrual cycle stage, which lacked evidence to support them. Jumping and landing exercises were commonly used to reduce the risk of injuries but evidence-based injury prevention exercises and programmes such as the Nordic hamstring curl, Copenhagen adduction exercise, and the FIFA 11+ were rarely mentioned. Overall, there was dissatisfaction amongst players with their medical care and strength and conditioning (S & C) support, with resultant inadequate communication between players, head coaches, and medical personnel.ConclusionPoor quality and availability of medical care and S & C support were considered to be a major obstacle in the effective implementation of injury risk reduction strategies and successful return-to-sport practices. More original research is required in elite-level women’s football to explore injury risk factors, injury prevention initiatives, and contextual return-to-sport strategies, so that players, head coaches, and medical personnel can use evidence that is both up-to-date and specific to their environment.

Child injuries in Lebanon: assessing mothers’ injury prevention knowledge attitude and practices

BackgroundChildhood injury is a neglected public health problem with a sizeable burden on children’s well-being and their families. This study aims to describe the pattern and types of childhood injuries and to determine the level of mothers’ Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices (KAP) towards childhood injury prevention in Lebanon. The study further examines the association between childhood injury occurrence and mothers’ supervision.MethodsThis cross-sectional study recruited mothers of children aged up to 10 years from multiple sites (i.e., a medical center, a private clinic, a healthcare facility, and a refugee camp clinic). Data were collected on mothers’ KAP toward childhood injuries using self-administrated questionnaires. A summation score for KAP correct answers was calculated and descriptive and statistical analyses were performed to measure the association between the outcomes.ResultsA total of 264 mothers were surveyed and injury data were collected on their 464 children. The prevalence of childhood injury was 20% in the past 12 months, mostly sustained by males (53.8%) and children aged 5–10 years (38.7%). The most common type of injury was fall (48.4%), followed by burns (%7.5), and sports injuries (7.5%). Hospitalized children were more likely to be males and older than 5 years (p < 0.001). More than one-third of the mothers demonstrated poor knowledge, while the majority showed poor practice (54.4%), and fair attitude (45.6%) towards child injury prevention. Children of working mothers have three times higher odds of sustaining injuries (OR: 2.95, 95% CI: 1.60;5.47) compared to those of non-working mothers, accounting for possible confounders (p = 0.001).ConclusionChildhood injuries represent a major health problem in Lebanon. Findings from this study showed that mothers are less knowledgeable and unprepared to prevent their children from getting injured. Educational programs are much needed to address the gap in the mothers' KAP toward child injury prevention. Further studies are recommended to understand the cultural context and examine its key determinants to identify effective strategies and develop tailored interventions for preventing childhood injuries.

The awareness of injury prevention programmes is insufficient among French- and German-speaking sports medicine communities in Europe.

Evaluate the current state of sports injury prevention perception, knowledge and practice among sports medicine professionals located in Western Europe and involved in injury prevention. Members of two different sports medicine organizations (GOTS and ReFORM) were invited to complete a web-based questionnaire (in German and in French, respectively) addressing perception, knowledge and implementation of sports injury prevention through 22 questions. 766 participants from a dozen of countries completed the survey. Among them, 43% were surgeons, 23% sport physicians and 18% physiotherapists working mainly in France (38%), Germany (23%) and Belgium (10%). The sample rated the importance of injury prevention as "high" or "very high" in a majority of cases (91%), but only 54% reported to be aware of specific injury prevention programmes. The French-speaking world was characterized by lower levels of reported knowledge, unfamiliarity with existing prevention programmes and less weekly time spent on prevention as compared to their German-speaking counterparts. Injury prevention barriers reported by the respondents included mainly insufficient expertise, absence of staff support from sports organizations and lack of time. There is a lack of awareness regarding injury prevention concepts among sports medicine professionals of the European French- and German-speaking world. This gap varied according to the professional occupation and working country. Relevant future paths for improvement include specific efforts to build awareness around sports injury prevention. An Evidence-Based Approach to Protecting Our Biggest Organ: Implementation of a Skin, Surface, Keep Moving, Incontinence/Moisture, and Nutrition/Hydration (SSKIN) Care Bundle

Background: The skin, surface, keep moving, incontinence/moisture, and nutrition/hydration (SSKIN) bundle is a resource to aid in care planning when at risk of pressure injuries. The bundle uses best practices to minimize variations in care. Objectives: The objectives of this quality improvement (QI) pilot project were as follows: (a) increase nurses' knowledge of pressure injury prevention, (b) increase nurses' knowledge of the use of the SSKIN bundle, and (c) to pilot the use of an SSKIN bundle in the clinical setting designed to standardize nursing interventions and documentation. Methods: Nurses completed a module on pressure injury prevention that included a pre- and posttest to determine knowledge. Education on the use of the SSKIN bundle was provided, followed by a posttest to establish understanding and knowledge gained. The bundle was utilized in the acute inpatient rehabilitation unit for 4 weeks, and compliance was assessed using the "all-or-none" approach (100% compliance). At the conclusion of the pilot project, staff nurses completed a post-survey created by the QI leader (Likert scale format). The survey included topics on the ease of learning to use the bundle, improved knowledge, perceived reduction in variation of care, perceived facilitation of discussion on skin, opinions on whether the bundle should be instituted hospital-wide, and incorporation of the bundle into the electronic health record (EHR). Results: There was an increase in pressure injury prevention knowledge from an average score of 88.89% on the pretest to 98.15% on the posttest. The mean score on the SSKIN bundle posttest was 93.75%. The bundle ran for 4 weeks and was initiated for ten patients during 74 shifts. Compliance with all components of the bundle was 77%. Conclusion: A pressure injury prevention initiative, such as the SSKIN bundle, can be a useful tool to help standardize nursing interventions and documentation. Implications for Nursing: Results revealed Nutrition as the component with the highest degree of noncompliance. Practice recommendations include documenting every patients nutrition information, regardless of Braden score.

A qualitative examination of injury prevention strategy and education in Ladies Gaelic football: Understanding the preferences of players and coaches.

The high rates of injury in Ladies Gaelic football impact the wellbeing of players and are a major financial burden for the Ladies Gaelic Football Association. Effective injury prevention programmes have been developed for Gaelic games, but these are not currently widely adopted. The aim of this study was to qualitatively investigate adult Ladies Gaelic football players and coaches' preferences for injury prevention strategies and injury prevention education using a constructivist grounded-theory approach. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 23 currently active Ladies Gaelic football coaches and adult players. The core strategy preferences discussed by participants were the properties of an injury prevention programme, the role of stakeholders, strategy logistics and the need for guidance and support. If the uptake and long-term adoption of an injury prevention programme is to be maximised, the preferences of the players and coaches who will ultimately utilise the programme must be understood and integrated into a wider implementation strategy developed around their needs. For education preferences, the core categories identified were the focus of education, who needs education, the format, educator, roll-out strategy, and time required. Future educational strategies must incorporate the preferences of stakeholders into their design if they are to be successful in spreading injury prevention knowledge and achieving change. To give injury prevention strategies, programmes, and education the best chances at successful adoption, it is crucial that the preferences of end-users are addressed and implemented.

Evaluation of the community involvement of nursing experts in reducing unintentional injuries in children

BackgroundNursing experts regularly visited the community to deliver safety education on the prevention of unintentional injuries in children to the parents of children aged 0–6 years and to pregnant women in a maternity school. This was undertaken to explore the effects of the measure on preventing unintentional injuries in children in Chizhou, China.MethodsUsing the convenience sampling method, the guardians(it means mother in this study)of children were investigated. The nursing experts visited communities in which the number of nursing experts is declining. Data on unintentional injuries in children in the previous year were collected retrospectively.ResultsAfter the nursing experts delivered safety education to the community, the scores of the questionnaire on unintentional injury prevention knowledge completed by children’s guardians increased significantly (p < 0.01). Among the children whose guardians completed the questionnaire, there were 157 cases of unintentional injury in 2020 and 103 cases in 2021 (p < 0.05). The types of unintentional injuries included scratches, falls, sharp object injuries, swallowing of foreign bodies, burns and traffic accidents; there was no statistical difference (p > 0.05). However, there were significant differences in terms of gender ratio and location (p < 0.05).ConclusionIn conjunction with the maternity school for pregnant women and the vaccination programme, nursing experts delivered safety education regarding unintentional injuries in children; this may have promoted safety and protection awareness in the children’s guardians and reduced unintentional injuries.

Creating a Comprehensive Hospital-Based Skin and Wound Care Program to Improve Outcomes and Decrease Pressure Injuries.

The author describes implementing a comprehensive skin and wound care program during her tenure as chief nurse executive to address challenges related to a lack of expert resources and knowledge of pressure injury (PI) prevention and treatment. This multifaceted program included the creation of a comprehensive, interprofessional, evidence-based skin and wound care committee; establishing a "Wound Board" for case presentations and expert consultation; providing educational programs; streamlining the processes for product evaluation, procurement, and use; decreasing costs; and hiring additional wound, ostomy, and continence nurse specialists. As a result, hospital-acquired PI incidence dropped significantly.
