Lately, artistic gymnastics has been passing through many changes, either in quality and training volume, athlete's performance, or on differentiated preparation of the practitioners for the competitions. In this direction, injuries are consequence of such changes, and mainly because of the equipment evolution. PURPOSE: To Identify the causes and effects of injuries caused by the practice of artistic gymnastics, its frequency, as well as relate them with the used apparatus. METHODS: 28 participant athletes from the training center of Osasco, Yashi academy and club AABB were investigated. It was used a questionary with 13 closed questions adapted from the technique of inquiry of related morbity (Ghirotto, 1992). RESULTS: The injury found with most frequency is hand blisters (30.6%), mostly caused by the excecution of bars. The entorses totalize 16.9% identified by the floor exercices, and most located at lower limbs, as for the fractures; the found frequency was 13.2% with no predominance of affected body structure or device. Regarding the use of individual protection equipment, men stand out with 69.4%, where the grips and wrist band correspond to 68% among other equipments. As for the women, it's worth pointing the use of wristband (63%) and band of crepe (36.3%) as the only equipments used.Table 1: Distribution of male and female injuries, according to gymnastics equipmentCONCLUSIONS: Although men are the only ones to use hands protection equipment, blisters are representative in both sexes, what allows us to presume that this occurrence happens due to the hand requeriment on almost every equipment. Other aspects to take into consideration are the ankle entorses accented by the floor exercices, which are the basics to all the other aparratus.
