Nottinghamshire Probation Service has a healthy track record of working with lifers throughout their sentence and of community-based courses for sex-offenders. Yet practitioners recognised that risk was often given only cursory attention in prison reports and assessments of serious sex offenders, usually by psychiatrists or psychologists having limited contact with the prisoner. Rita Nicholson and Malcolm Cowburn devised a five day programme designed to begin systematic examination with lifers and other long-term prisoners of their sexual offending. They describe their experience from initial negotiation to final evaluation.
