Role of magnetic fields in disc galaxies: spiral arm instability

Regularly spaced star-forming regions along the spiral arms of nearby galaxies provide insight into the early stages and initial conditions of star formation. The regular separation of these star-forming regions suggests spiral arm instability as their origin. We explore the effects of magnetic fields on the spiral arm instability. We use 3D global magnetohydrodynamical simulations of isolated spiral galaxies, comparing three different initial plasma beta values (ratios of the thermal to magnetic pressure) of $ $50$, and $10$. We perform a Fourier analysis to calculate the separation of the over-dense regions that formed as a result of the spiral instability. We then compare the separations with observations. We find that the spiral arms in the hydro case ($ are unstable. The fragments are initially connected by gas streams that are reminiscent of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. For $ = 50$, the spiral arms also fragment, but the fragments separate earlier and tend to be slightly elongated in the direction perpendicular to the spiral arms. However, in the $ = 10$ run, the arms are stabilised against fragmentation by magnetic pressure. Despite the difference in the initial magnetic field strengths of the $ = 50$ and $10$ runs, the magnetic field is amplified to $ arm 1$ inside the spiral arms for both runs. The spiral arms in the unstable cases (hydro and $ fragment into regularly spaced over-dense regions. We determine their separation to be $ 0.5$ kpc in the hydro and $ 0.65$ kpc in the $ = 50$ case. These two values agree with the observed values found in nearby galaxies. We find a smaller median characteristic wavelength of the over-densities along the spiral arms of $ kpc in the hydro case compared to $0.98^ $ kpc in the $ = 50$ case. Moreover, we find a higher growth rate of the over-densities in the $ = 50$ run compared to the hydro run. We observe magnetic hills and valleys along the fragmented arms in the $ = 50$ run, which is characteristic of the Parker instability.

The dynamical evolution of star-forming regions measured with INDICATE

ABSTRACT Observations of star-forming regions provide snapshots in time of the star formation process, and can be compared with simulation data to constrain the initial conditions of star formation. In order to make robust inferences, different metrics must be used to quantify the spatial and kinematic distributions of stars. In this paper, we assess the suitability of the INdex to Define Inherent Clustering And TEndencies (INDICATE) method as a diagnostic to infer the initial conditions of star-forming regions that subsequently undergo dynamical evolution. We use INDICATE to measure the degree of clustering in N-body simulations of the evolution of star-forming regions with different initial conditions. We find that the clustering of individual stars, as measured by INDICATE, becomes significantly higher in simulations with higher initial stellar densities, and is higher in subvirial star-forming regions where significant amounts of dynamical mixing have occurred. We then combine INDICATE with other methods that measure the mass segregation (ΛMSR), relative stellar surface density ratio (ΣLDR), and the morphology (Q-parameter) of star-forming regions, and show that the diagnostic capability of INDICATE increases when combined with these other metrics.

Dynamics in Star-forming Cores (DiSCo): project overview and the first look towards the B1 and NGC 1333 regions in Perseus

ABSTRACT The internal velocity structure within dense gaseous cores plays a crucial role in providing the initial conditions for star formation in molecular clouds. However, the kinematic properties of dense gas at core scales (∼0.01−0.1 pc) has not been extensively characterized because of instrument limitations until the unique capabilities of GBT-Argus became available. The ongoing GBT-Argus Large Program, Dynamics in Star-forming Cores (DiSCo) thus aims to investigate the origin and distribution of angular momentum of star-forming cores. DiSCo will survey all starless cores and Class 0 protostellar cores in the Perseus molecular complex down to ∼0.01 pc scales with <0.05 km s−1 velocity resolution using the dense gas tracer N2H+. Here, we present the first data sets from DiSCo towards the B1 and NGC 1333 regions in Perseus. Our results suggest that a dense core’s internal velocity structure has little correlation with other core-scale properties, indicating these gas motions may be originated externally from cloud-scale turbulence. These first data sets also reaffirm the ability of GBT-Argus for studying dense core velocity structure and provided an empirical basis for future studies that address the angular momentum problem with a statistically broad sample.

Initial conditions of star formation at ≲2000 au: Physical structure and NH3 depletion of three early-stage cores

Context. Pre-stellar cores represent a critical evolutionary phase in low-mass star formation. Characterisations of the physical conditions of pre-stellar cores provide important constraints on star and planet formation theory and are pre-requisites for establishing the dynamical evolution and the related chemical processes. Aims. We aim to unveil the detailed thermal structure and density distribution of three early-stage cores -starless core L1517B and pre-stellar cores L694-2 and L429- with the high angular resolution observations of the NH3 (1,1) and (2,2) inversion transitions obtained with VLA and GBT. In addition, we explored if and where NH3 depletes in the central regions of the cores. Methods. We calculated the physical parameter maps of gas kinetic temperature, NH3 column density, line width, and centroid velocity of the three cores utilising the NH3 (1,1) and (2,2) lines. We applied the mid-infrared extinction method to the Spitzer 8 μm map to obtain a high angular resolution hydrogen column density map. We examined the correlation between the derived parameters and the properties of individual cores. We derived the gas density profile from the column density maps and assessed the variation of NH3 abundance as a function of gas volume density. Results. The measured temperature profiles of the cores L429 and L1517B show a minor decrease towards the core centre, dropping from ~9 K to below 8 K, and ~11 K to 10 K, while L694-2 has a rather uniform temperature distribution of ~9 K. Among the three cores, L429 has the highest central gas density, close to sonic velocity line width, and the largest localised velocity gradient, all indicative of an advanced evolutionary stage. We resolve that the abundance of NH3 becomes two times lower in the central region of L429, occurring around a (line-of-sight mass-averaged) gas density of 4.4 × 104 cm−3. Compared to Ophiuchus/H-MM1 which shows an even stronger drop of the NH3 abundance at 2 × 105 cm−3, the abundance variations of the three cores plus Ophiuchus/H-MM1 suggest a progressive NH3 depletion with increasing central density in pre-stellar cores.

SUNRISE: The rich molecular inventory of high-redshift dusty galaxies revealed by broadband spectral line surveys

Understanding the nature of high-redshift dusty galaxies requires a comprehensive view of their interstellar medium (ISM) and molecular complexity. However, the molecular ISM at high redshifts is commonly studied using only a few species beyond 12C16O, limiting our understanding. In this paper, we present the results of deep 3 mm spectral line surveys using the NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) targeting two strongly lensed dusty galaxies observed when the Universe was less than 1.8 Gyr old: APM 08279+5255, a quasar at redshift z = 3.911, and NCv1.143 (H-ATLAS J125632.7+233625), a z = 3.565 starburst galaxy. The spectral line surveys cover rest-frame frequencies from about 330 to 550 GHz for both galaxies. We report the detection of 38 and 25 emission lines in APM 08279+5255 and NCv1.143, respectively. These lines originate from 17 species, namely CO, 13CO, C18O, CN, CCH, HCN, HCO+, HNC, CS, C34S, H2O, H3O+, NO, N2H+, CH, c-C3H2, and the vibrationally excited HCN and neutral carbon. The spectra reveal the chemical richness and the complexity of the physical properties of the ISM. By comparing the spectra of the two sources and combining the analysis of the molecular gas excitation, we find that the physical properties and the chemical imprints of the ISM are different: the molecular gas is more excited in APM 08279+5255, which exhibits higher molecular gas temperatures and densities compared to NCv1.143; the molecular abundances in APM 08279+5255 are akin to the values of local active galactic nuclei (AGN), showing boosted relative abundances of the dense gas tracers that might be related to high-temperature chemistry and/or the X-ray-dominated regions, while NCv1.143 more closely resembles local starburst galaxies. The most significant differences between the two sources are found in H2O: the 448 GHz ortho-H2O(423 − 330) line is significantly brighter in APM 08279+5255, which is likely linked to the intense far-infrared radiation from the dust powered by AGN. Our astrochemical model suggests that, at such high column densities, far-ultraviolet radiation is less important in regulating the ISM, while cosmic rays (and/or X-rays and shocks) are the key players in shaping the molecular abundances and the initial conditions of star formation. Both our observed CO isotopologs line ratios and the derived extreme ISM conditions (high gas temperatures, densities, and cosmic-ray ionization rates) suggest the presence of a top-heavy stellar initial mass function. From the ∼330–550 GHz continuum, we also find evidence of nonthermal millimeter flux excess in APM 08279+5255 that might be related to the central supermassive black hole. Such deep spectral line surveys open a new window into the physics and chemistry of the ISM and the radiation field of galaxies in the early Universe.

The Detection of Hot Molecular Cores in the Small Magellanic Cloud

We report the first detection of hot molecular cores in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), a nearby dwarf galaxy with 0.2 solar metallicity. We observed two high-mass young stellar objects in the SMC with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array and detected emission lines of CO, HCO+, H13CO+, SiO, H2CO, CH3OH, SO, and SO2. Compact hot-core regions are traced by SO2, whose spatial extent is about 0.1 pc, and the gas temperature is higher than 100 K based on the rotation diagram analysis. In contrast, CH3OH, a classical hot-core tracer, is dominated by extended (∼0.2–0.3 pc) components in both sources, and the gas temperature is estimated to be K for one source. Protostellar outflows are also detected from both sources as high-velocity components of CO. The metallicity-scaled abundances of SO2 in hot cores are comparable among the SMC, Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), and Galactic sources, suggesting that the chemical reactions leading to SO2 formation would be regulated by elemental abundances. On the other hand, CH3OH shows a large abundance variation within SMC and LMC hot cores. The diversity in the initial condition of star formation (e.g., degree of shielding, local radiation field strength) may lead to the large abundance variation of organic molecules in hot cores. This work, in conjunction with previous hot-core studies in the LMC and outer/inner Galaxy, suggests that the formation of a hot core would be a common phenomenon during high-mass star formation across the metallicity range of 0.2–1 Z⊙. High-excitation SO2 lines will be a useful hot-core tracer in the low-metallicity environments of the SMC and LMC.

ALMA Survey of Orion Planck Galactic Cold Clumps (ALMASOP): Density Structure of Centrally Concentrated Prestellar Cores from Multiscale Observations

Starless cores represent the initial stage of evolution toward (proto)star formation, and a subset of them, known as prestellar cores, with high density (∼ 106 cm−3 or higher) and being centrally concentrated are expected to be embryos of (proto)stars. Determining the density profile of prestellar cores therefore provides an important opportunity to gauge the initial conditions of star formation. In this work, we perform rigorous modeling to estimate the density profiles of three nearly spherical prestellar cores among a sample of five highly dense cores detected by our recent observations. We employed multiscale observational data of the (sub)millimeter dust continuum emission, including those obtained by SCUBA-2 on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope with a resolution of ∼ 5600 au and by multiple Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations with a resolution as high as ∼ 480 au. We are able to consistently reproduce the observed multiscale dust continuum images of the cores with a simple prescribed density profile, which bears an inner region of flat density and an r −2 profile toward the outer region. By utilizing the peak density and the size of the inner flat region as a proxy for the dynamical stage of the cores, we find that the three modeled cores are most likely unstable and prone to collapse. The sizes of the inner flat regions, as compact as ∼ 500 au, signify them as being the highly evolved prestellar cores rarely found to date.

Effective shielding of ≲10 GeV cosmic rays from dense molecular clumps

The density of cosmic rays inside molecular clouds determines the ionization rate in the dense cores where stars form. It is also one of the drivers of astrochemistry leading to the creation of complex molecules. Through Fermi Large Area Telescope observations of nearby giant molecular clouds, we observed deficits (holes) in the gamma-ray residual map when modelling with the expected gamma-ray diffuse emission from uniform cosmic rays interacting with the molecular content. We propose that the deficit is due to the lack of penetration of the low-energy (sub-GeV to GeV) cosmic rays into denser regions or clumps. This differs from the prevailing view of fast cosmic ray transport in giant molecular clouds where the magnetic turbulence is suppressed by neutral-ion damping, as our results require a slow diffusion inside dense molecular clumps. Through modelling we find that while the shielding is negligible on the cloud scale, it becomes important in the denser, parsec-sized regions where the gravitational collapse is already at play, changing the initial condition of star formation and astrochemistry.

Twisted magnetic field in star formation processes of L1521 F revealed by submillimeter dual-band polarimetry using the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope

Abstract Understanding the initial conditions of star formation requires both observational studies and theoretical works taking into account the magnetic field, which plays an important role in star formation processes. Herein, we study the young nearby dense cloud core L1521 F [n(H2) ∼104−6 cm−3] in the Taurus Molecular Cloud. This dense core hosts a 0.2 M⊙ protostar, categorized as a very low luminosity object with complex velocity structures, particularly in the vicinity of the protostar. To trace the magnetic field within the dense core, we conducted high-sensitivity submillimeter polarimetry of the dust continuum at λ = 850 μm and 450 μm using the POL-2 polarimeter situated in front of the SCUBA-2 submillimeter bolometer camera on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. This was compared with millimeter polarimetry taken at λ = 3.3 mm with ALMA. The magnetic field was detected at λ = 850 μm in the peripheral region, which is threaded in a north–south direction, while the central region traced at λ = 450 μm shows a magnetic field with an east–west direction, i.e., orthogonal to that of the peripheral region. Magnetic field strengths are estimated to be ∼70 μG and 200 μG in the peripheral and central regions, respectively, using the Davis–Chandrasekhar–Fermi method. The resulting mass-to-flux ratio of three times larger than that of magnetically critical state for both regions indicates that L 1521 F is magnetically supercritical, i.e., gravitational forces dominate over magnetic turbulence forces. Combining observational data with magnetohydrodynamic simulations, detailed parameters of the morphological properties of this puzzling object are derived for the first time.

The typical width of Herschel filaments

Context. Dense molecular filaments are widely believed to be representative of the initial conditions of star formation in interstellar clouds. Characterizing their physical properties, such as their transverse size, is therefore of paramount importance. Herschel studies suggest that nearby (d < 500 pc) molecular filaments have a typical half-power width of ∼0.1 pc, but this finding has been questioned recently on the ground that the measured widths tend to increase with distance to the filaments. Aims. Here we revisit the dependence of measured filament widths on distance or, equivalently, spatial resolution in an effort to determine whether nearby molecular filaments have a characteristic half-power width or whether this is an artifact of the finite resolution of the Herschel data. Methods. We perform a convergence test on the well-documented B211/213 filament in Taurus by degrading the resolution of the Herschel data several times and reestimating the filament width from the resulting column density profiles. We also compare the widths measured for the Taurus filament and other filaments from the Herschel Gould Belt Survey to those found for synthetic filaments with various types of simple, idealized column density profiles (Gaussian, power law, and Plummer-like). Results. We find that the measured filament widths do increase slightly as the spatial resolution worsens and/or the distance to the filaments increases. However, this trend is entirely consistent with what is expected from simple beam convolution for filaments with density profiles that are Plummer-like and have intrinsic half-power diameters of ∼0.08–0.1 pc and logarithmic slopes 1.5 < p < 2.5 at large radii, as directly observed in many cases, including for the Taurus filament. Due to the presence of background noise fluctuations, deconvolution of the measured widths from the telescope beam is difficult and quickly becomes inaccurate. Conclusions. We conclude that the typical half-power filament width of ∼0.1 pc measured with Herschel in nearby clouds most likely reflects the presence of a true common scale in the filamentary structure of the cold interstellar medium, at least in the solar neighborhood. We suggest that this common scale may correspond to the magnetized turbulent correlation length in molecular clouds.

The initial conditions for young massive cluster formation in the Galactic Centre: convergence of large-scale gas flows

ABSTRACT Young massive clusters (YMCs) are compact (≲1 pc), high-mass (>104 M⊙) stellar systems of significant scientific interest. Due to their rarity and rapid formation, we have very few examples of YMC progenitor gas clouds before star formation has begun. As a result, the initial conditions required for YMC formation are uncertain. We present high resolution (0.13 arcsec, ∼1000 au) ALMA observations and Mopra single-dish data, showing that Galactic Centre dust ridge ‘Cloud d’ (G0.412 + 0.052, mass = 7.6 × 104 M⊙, radius = 3.2 pc) has the potential to become an Arches-like YMC (104 M⊙, r ∼ 1 pc), but is not yet forming stars. This would mean it is the youngest known pre-star-forming massive cluster and therefore could be an ideal laboratory for studying the initial conditions of YMC formation. We find 96 sources in the dust continuum, with masses ≲3 M⊙ and radii of ∼103 au. The source masses and separations are more consistent with thermal rather than turbulent fragmentation. It is not possible to unambiguously determine the dynamical state of most of the sources, as the uncertainty on virial parameter estimates is large. We find evidence for large-scale (∼1 pc) converging gas flows, which could cause the cloud to grow rapidly, gaining 104 M⊙ within 105 yr. The highest density gas is found at the convergent point of the large-scale flows. We expect this cloud to form many high-mass stars, but find no high-mass starless cores. If the sources represent the initial conditions for star formation, the resulting initial mass function will be bottom heavy.

Hourglass magnetic field from a survey of current density profiles

Modeling the magnetic field in prestellar cores can serve as a useful tool for studying the initial conditions of star formation. The analytic hourglass model of Ewertowski and Basu (2013) provides a means to fit observed polarimetry measurements and extract useful information. The original model does not specify any radial distribution of the electric current density. Here, we perform a survey of possible centrally-peaked radial distributions of the current density, and numerically derive the full hourglass patterns. Since the vertical distribution is also specified in the original model, we can study the effect of different ratios of vertical to radial scale length on the overall hourglass pattern. Different values of this ratio may correspond to different formation scenarios for prestellar cores. We demonstrate the flexibility of our model and how it can be applied to a variety of magnetic field patterns.

A Low-mass Cold and Quiescent Core Population in a Massive Star Protocluster

Abstract Pre-stellar cores represent the initial conditions of star formation. Although these initial conditions in nearby low-mass star-forming regions have been investigated in detail, such initial conditions remain vastly unexplored for massive star-forming regions. We report the detection of a cluster of low-mass starless and pre-stellar core candidates in a massive star protocluster-forming cloud, NGC 6334S. With the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations at a ∼0.02 pc spatial resolution, we identified 17 low-mass starless core candidates that do not show any evidence of protostellar activity. These candidates present small velocity dispersions, high fractional abundances of NH2D, high NH3 deuterium fractionations, and are completely dark in the infrared wavelengths from 3.6 up to 70 μm. Turbulence is significantly dissipated and the gas kinematics are dominated by thermal motions toward these candidates. Nine out of the 17 cores are gravitationally bound, and therefore are identified as pre-stellar core candidates. The embedded cores of NGC 6334S show a wide diversity in masses and evolutionary stages.

FRagmentation and Evolution of Dense Cores Judged by ALMA (FREJA). I. Overview: Inner ∼1000 au Structures of Prestellar/Protostellar Cores in Taurus

Abstract We have performed survey-type observations in 1 mm continuum and molecular lines toward dense cores (32 prestellar + 7 protostellar) with an average density of ≳105 cm−3 in the Taurus molecular clouds using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array–Atacama Compact Array (ALMA-ACA) stand-alone mode with an angular resolution of 6.″5 (∼900 au). The primary purpose of this study is to investigate the innermost part of dense cores with view to understanding the initial condition of star formation. In the protostellar cores, contributions from protostellar disks dominate the observed continuum flux with a range of 35%–90%, except for the very low-luminosity object. For the prestellar cores, we have successfully confirmed continuum emission from dense gas with a density of ≳3 × 105 cm−3 toward approximately one-third of the targets. Thanks to the lower spatial frequency coverage with the ACA 7 m array, the detection rate is significantly higher than that of the previous surveys, which have zero or one continuum-detected sources among a large number of starless samples using the ALMA Main Array. The statistical counting method tells us that the lifetime of prestellar cores until protostar formation therein approaches the freefall time as the density increases. Among the prestellar cores, at least two targets have possible internal substructures, which are detected in continuum emission with the size scale of ∼1000 au if we consider the molecular line (C18O and N2D+) distributions. These results suggest that small-scale fragmentation/coalescence processes occur in a region smaller than 0.1 pc, which may determine the final core mass associated with individual protostar formation before starting the dynamical collapse of the core with a central density of ∼(0.3–1) × 106 cm−3.

Deuterium Fractionation in the Oph-H-MM1 Dense Core of the L1688 Low Mass Star-Forming Region

Molecular clouds fragment to form dense cores, which are the first stage of star formation. Such objects are cold, with temperature of ~10 K and density of $${{10}^{4}}{-} {{10}^{7}}$$ cm–3, with predominance of thermal motions and high deuterium fraction. These objects give us information about the initial conditions of star formation and thus they are very important to understand this process. High abundance of deuterated species indicates that a dense core is close to the onset of star formation. In this work, we study deuterium fractionation, which occurs due to chemical reactions that take place under cold core conditions. To measure deuterium fraction, we use nitrogen-bearing species, because they stay longer in the gas phase at low temperatures. We choose the L1688 low-mass star-forming region as one of the closest ones, containing a large number of cold dense cores. We use spectral maps of two lines, N2H+(1–0) and N2D+(1–0), towards one of the dense cores in L1688, Oph-H-MM1, observed with the IRAM 30 m telescope. We measure column densities of N2D+ and N2H+ and deuterium fraction as the ratio of column densities. The map shows an increase in deuterium fraction towards the core center, which is consistent with theoretical predictions.

Molecular Cloud Cores with a High Deuterium Fraction: Nobeyama Single-pointing Survey

Abstract We present the results of a single-pointing survey of 207 dense cores embedded in Planck Galactic Cold Clumps distributed in five different environments (λ Orionis, Orion A, Orion B, the Galactic plane, and high latitudes) to identify dense cores on the verge of star formation for the study of the initial conditions of star formation. We observed these cores in eight molecular lines at 76–94 GHz using the Nobeyama 45 m telescope. We find that early-type molecules (e.g., CCS) have low detection rates and that late-type molecules (e.g., N2H+ and c-C3H2) and deuterated molecules (e.g., N2D+ and DNC) have high detection rates, suggesting that most of the cores are chemically evolved. The deuterium fraction (D/H) is found to decrease with increasing distance, indicating that it suffers from differential beam dilution between the D/H pair of lines for distant cores (>1 kpc). For λ Orionis, Orion A, and Orion B located at similar distances, D/H is not significantly different, suggesting that there is no systematic difference in the observed chemical properties among these three regions. We identify at least eight high-D/H cores in the Orion region and two at high latitudes, which are most likely to be close to the onset of star formation. There is no clear evidence of the evolutionary change in turbulence during the starless phase, suggesting that the dissipation of turbulence is not a major mechanism for the beginning of star formation as judged from observations with a beam size of 0.04 pc.

The VLA/ALMA Nascent Disk and Multiplicity (VANDAM) Survey of Orion Protostars. II. A Statistical Characterization of Class 0 and Class I Protostellar Disks

Abstract We have conducted a survey of 328 protostars in the Orion molecular clouds with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array at 0.87 mm at a resolution of ∼0.″1 (40 au), including observations with the Very Large Array at 9 mm toward 148 protostars at a resolution of ∼0.″08 (32 au). This is the largest multiwavelength survey of protostars at this resolution by an order of magnitude. We use the dust continuum emission at 0.87 and 9 mm to measure the dust disk radii and masses toward the Class 0, Class I, and flat-spectrum protostars, characterizing the evolution of these disk properties in the protostellar phase. The mean dust disk radii for the Class 0, Class I, and flat-spectrum protostars are , , and au, respectively, and the mean protostellar dust disk masses are 25.9 , , , respectively. The decrease in dust disk masses is expected from disk evolution and accretion, but the decrease in disk radii may point to the initial conditions of star formation not leading to the systematic growth of disk radii or that radial drift is keeping the dust disk sizes small. At least 146 protostellar disks (35% of 379 detected 0.87 mm continuum sources plus 42 nondetections) have disk radii greater than 50 au in our sample. These properties are not found to vary significantly between different regions within Orion. The protostellar dust disk mass distributions are systematically larger than those of Class II disks by a factor of >4, providing evidence that the cores of giant planets may need to at least begin their formation during the protostellar phase.

Characterizing the properties of nearby molecular filaments observed with Herschel

Context. Molecular filaments have received special attention recently thanks to new observational results on their properties. In particular, our early analysis of filament properties from Herschel imaging data in three nearby molecular clouds revealed a narrow distribution of median inner widths centered at a characteristic value of about 0.1 pc. Aims. Here, we extend and complement our initial study with a detailed analysis of the filamentary structures identified with Herschel in eight nearby molecular clouds (at distances <500 pc). Our main goal is to establish statistical distributions of median properties averaged along the filament crests and to compare the results with our earlier work based on a smaller number of filaments. Aims. We use the column density (NH2) maps derived from Herschel data and the DisPerSE algorithm to trace a network of individual filaments in each cloud. We analyze the density structure along and across the main filament axes in detail. We build synthetic maps of filamentary clouds to assess the completeness limit of our extracted filament sample and validate our measurements of the filament properties. These tests also help us to select the best choice of parameters to be used for tracing filaments with DisPerSE and fitting their radial column density profiles. Methods. Our analysis yields an extended sample of 1310 filamentary structures and a selected sample of 599 filaments with aspect ratios larger than 3 and column density contrasts larger than 0.3. We show that our selected sample of filaments is more than 95% complete for column density contrasts larger than 1, with only ~ 5% spurious detections. On average, more than 15% of the total gas mass in the clouds, and more than 80% of the dense gas mass (at NH2 > 7 × 1021 cm−2), is found to be in the form of filaments. Analysis of the radial column density profiles of the 599 filaments in the selected sample indicates a narrow distribution of crest-averaged inner widths, with a median value of 0.10 pc and an interquartile range of 0.07 pc. In contrast, the extracted filaments span wide ranges in length, central column density, column density contrast, and mass per unit length. The characteristic filament width is well resolved by Herschel observations, and a median value of ~0.1 pc is consistently found using three distinct estimates based on (1) a direct measurement of the width at half power after background subtraction, as well as (2) Gaussian and (3) Plummer fits. The existence of a characteristic filament width is further supported by the presence of a tight correlation between mass per unit length and central column density for the observed filaments. Results. Our detailed analysis of a large filament sample confirms our earlier result that nearby molecular filaments share a common mean inner width of ~0.1 pc, with typical variations along and on either side of the filament crests of about ± 0.06 pc around the mean value. This observational result sets strong constraints on possible models for the formation and evolution of filaments in molecular clouds. It also provides important hints on the initial conditions of star formation.

Physical properties and chemical composition of the cores in the California molecular cloud

Aims. We aim to reveal the physical properties and chemical composition of the cores in the California molecular cloud (CMC), so as to better understand the initial conditions of star formation. Methods. We made a high-resolution column density map (18.2′′) with Herschel data, and extracted a complete sample of the cores in the CMC with the fellwalker algorithm. We performed new single-pointing observations of molecular lines near 90 GHz with the IRAM 30m telescope along the main filament of the CMC. In addition, we also performed a numerical modeling of chemical evolution for the cores under the physical conditions. Results. We extracted 300 cores, of which 33 are protostellar and 267 are starless cores. About 51% (137 of 267) of the starless cores are prestellar cores. Three cores have the potential to evolve into high-mass stars. The prestellar core mass function (CMF) can be well fit by a log-normal form. The high-mass end of the prestellar CMF shows a power-law form with an index α = −0.9 ± 0.1 that is shallower than that of the Galactic field stellar mass function. Combining the mass transformation efficiency (ε) from the prestellar core to the star of 15 ± 1% and the core formation efficiency (CFE) of 5.5%, we suggest an overall star formation efficiency of about 1% in the CMC. In the single-pointing observations with the IRAM 30m telescope, we find that 6 cores show blue-skewed profile, while 4 cores show red-skewed profile. [HCO+]/[HNC] and [HCO+]/[N2H+] in protostellar cores are higher than those in prestellar cores; this can be used as chemical clocks. The best-fit chemical age of the cores with line observations is ~5 × 104 yr.

Evolution of spatio-kinematic structures in star-forming regions: are Friends of Friends worth knowing?

The Friends of Friends algorithm identifies groups of objects with similar spatial and kinematic properties, and has recently been used extensively to quantify the distributions of gas and stars in young star-forming regions. We apply the Friends of Friends algorithm to $N$-body simulations of the dynamical evolution of subvirial (collapsing) and supervirial (expanding) star-forming regions. We find that the algorithm picks out a wide range of groups (1 -- 25) for statistically identical initial conditions, and cannot distinguish between subvirial and supervirial regions in that we obtain similar mode and median values for the number of groups it identifies. We find no correlation between the number of groups identified initially and either the initial or subsequent spatial and kinematic tracers of the regions' evolution, such as the amount of spatial substructure, dynamical mass segregation, or velocity dispersion. We therefore urge caution in using the Friends of Friends algorithm to quantify the initial conditions of star formation.
