Development of hybrid first principles – Artificial intelligence models for transient modeling of power plant superheaters under load-following operation

This paper develops different approaches for synergistic integration of physics-based models with data-driven models for modeling of high temperature power plant superheaters. Two types of data-driven models are developed, namely all-nonlinear static-dynamic neural network models as well as models obtained using a Bayesian machine learning approach. Series, integrated, and parallel coupling of first-principles models and data-driven models are proposed. Algorithms for solving the training problems for the data-driven models and for simulation of the hybrid models are developed. The developed approach is applied to high temperature power plant superheaters that face considerable modeling and measurement challenges. Measurement challenges arise due to harsh operating conditions that not only make placement of sensors difficult, but life of the placed sensors very limited. Modeling challenges arise due to complex inhomogeneous spatial distribution of flue gas and steam flowrates, especially under load-following operation and uncertainties in heat transfer characteristics because of multiple factors such as stochastic spatio-temporal variation of ash deposits on the superheater tubes in coal-fired power plants, internal oxide scale formation in the tubes, etc. First-principles two-dimensional differential–algebraic equation models of two industrial superheaters, one from a natural gas combined cycle plant and another from a coal-fired power plant, are developed. The results from the models are compared against industrial operational data. For all cases studied in this work, it is observed that both for steady-state and dynamic data, the hybrid models have much higher accuracy than when only the respective first-principles models are used. For example, during prediction of the average outside tube wall temperature of superheater tubes at the combined cycle power plant, the root mean squared error observed for the standalone first-principles model improved from 12.3 °C to 0.5 °C post hybridization with data-driven models. Similarly, while predicting the main steam outlet temperature in the coal-fired plant, the hybrid models resulted in reduction of the root mean squared error value from 19.5 °C to around 2 °C. In addition, the hybrid models yield highly resolved spatio-temporal temperature profiles that can be helpful for developing monitoring approaches of these critical components under load-following operation.

Developing the Metrology for Atomic Level Spatial Distribution and Local Chemistry Analysis of in-Situ Dopants By Atom Probe Tomography

We present a metrology for analyzing the spatial distribution and local chemistry of in-situ dopants using Atom Probe Tomography (APT). Our approach integrates a 'local composition method' with a Kolmogorov-Smirnov test on a 3D APT dataset to evaluate spatial inhomogeneity. This methodology was applied to a nanometer scale in-situ highly boron-doped silicon germanium layer. By subdividing the dopant-dopant local composition distribution into three, its influence on the localized chemical environment was determined. Our findings reveal an inhomogeneous spatial distribution for the dopant and the Si/Ge atoms. Our results demonstrate the potential for linking at an atomic-scale the epitaxial growth conditions of dopants and the matrix elements to a device performance.

Generation of Arbitrarily Programmable Vector Vortex Beams Based on Spin‐Independent Metasurface

AbstractVectorial structured beam, which possesses diverse inhomogeneous spatial field distributions, has been developed into an advanced technology for particle trapping, optical communication, and quantum information. However, most of the related studies are based on static devices that can only generate structured light with fixed field distributions. To break through this restriction, the study proposes and experimentally demonstrates a reflection‐type spin‐independent programmable metasurface (SIPM) that can generate arbitrary vector vortex beams (VVBs) dynamically in microwave frequencies. By controlling the working states of loaded positive‐intrinsic‐negative (PIN) diodes, the metasurface can realize real‐time and spin‐independent manipulations of amplitude and phase of the reflected waves. Therefore, any desired VVBs can be achieved by dynamically controlling the superimposition of left‐ and right‐handed reflected circularly polarized vortexes. The proposed SIPM exhibits powerful abilities in modulating the vectorial structured beams in the microwave band, and may bring potential technological innovations for the future spintronics, imaging display, optical computing, and wireless communications.

Research on Spatial Magnetic Field Distribution of Magnetic Fluids Based on Microstructure.

This study focuses on the spatial magnetic field distribution of magnetic fluids, an extraordinary class of fluids composed of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), employing the Monte Carlo method to simulate the microstructure of magnetic fluids under an external magnetic field. On that basis, a model was established through magnetic dipole theory to delve into the spatial magnetic field distribution of magnetic fluids. The findings reveal that the application of a magnetic field leads to the formation of chain-like structures within the magnetic fluids, resulting in inhomogeneous spatial magnetic field distribution. The size and concentration of MNPs are crucial determinants that significantly affect the microstructure of magnetic fluid and its spatial magnetic field distribution. Furthermore, environmental conditions such as external magnetic field strength or temperature can also regulate the positions of MNPs within magnetic fluids and the spatial magnetic field distribution of the magnetic fluids. These observations enrich the comprehension of the fundamental mechanisms of magnetic fluids and their response to diverse factors, advancing the growing comprehension on the characteristics and applications of these remarkable magnetic fluids.

Generating complex vectorial optical fields via surface lattice resonances.

Vectorial optical fields (VOFs) with extra degrees of freedom hold promise for many photonic applications. However, current methods to generate VOFs are either bulky in size or exhibit limited functionalities. Here, we demonstrate a tunable VOF generator by exciting plasmonic surface lattice resonances (SLRs) with axial symmetry. By meticulously arranging bilayer circular arrays with opposite handedness, we achieve a high Q-factor of 103 via just a few particles despite the general belief that too small array size suppresses the SLRs. This work presents tunable complex VOFs with distinct inhomogeneous spatial polarization distributions, which may enable various applications in integrated and polarization optics.

Optofluidic crystallithography for directed growth of single-crystalline halide perovskites

Crystallization is a fundamental phenomenon which describes how the atomic building blocks such as atoms and molecules are arranged into ordered or quasi-ordered structure and form solid-state materials. While numerous studies have focused on the nucleation behavior, the precise and spatiotemporal control of growth kinetics, which dictates the defect density, the micromorphology, as well as the properties of the grown materials, remains elusive so far. Herein, we propose an optical strategy, termed optofluidic crystallithography (OCL), to solve this fundamental problem. Taking halide perovskites as an example, we use a laser beam to manipulate the molecular motion in the native precursor environment and create inhomogeneous spatial distribution of the molecular species. Harnessing the coordinated effect of laser-controlled local supersaturation and interfacial energy, we precisely steer the ionic reaction at the growth interface and directly print arbitrary single crystals of halide perovskites of high surface quality, crystallinity, and uniformity at a high printing speed of 102 μm s−1. The OCL technique can be potentially extended to the fabrication of single-crystal structures beyond halide perovskites, once crystallization can be triggered under the laser-directed local supersaturation.

Numerical prediction of fog: A novel parameterization for droplet formation

AbstractA novel aerosol activation scheme was developed and implemented into the WRF Thompson–Eidhammer Aerosol‐Aware microphysical module. While in most of the numerical weather prediction (NWP) models the activation is based on updraft velocity, even in the fog, the new parameterization considers the local rate of cooling and water vapor flux in the evaluation of the aerosol activation rate. In addition, diagnostic variables are added to evaluate the visibility reduction due to formation of haze droplets. The impact of changing the activation scheme is demonstrated by a case study of a well‐observed fog event. Data observed during the fog event campaign at Budapest and observed at standard meteorological stations are compared with the output of the numerical model. The results are summarized as follows: (i) the inhomogeneous spatial and temporal distribution of the number concentration of droplets is an inherent characteristic of the new parameterization scheme. (ii) Compared to the prior parameterization based on updraft velocity, the new parameterization scheme increases the number concentration of the droplets significantly, especially at the top of the fog. As a consequence, it reduces the downward short‐wave radiation flux prolonging the lifetime of the fog by about 30–60 min. (iii) Analyses reveal that earlier dissipation of the fog comparing to the observed data cannot be explained only by overestimation of the downward short‐wave radiation flux. (iv) The new method is able to evaluate the reduction of visibility due to haze.

Dynamic evolution of the T1 phase and its effect on continuous dynamic recrystallization in Al–Cu–Li alloys

The T1 phase is the highest density and most prominent strengthening effect precipitate in Al–Cu–Li alloys, and it undergoes a complex dynamic evolution during hot deformation, which has significant effects on microstructure development and hot working. This study comprehensively characterizes and analyzes the dynamic evolution of the T1 phase at 400 °C/0.01 s−1 and its influence on continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX). The results indicate that the T1 phase successively undergoes coarsening, fracture, dissolution, dynamic precipitation, recoarsening, and spheroidization during deformation. A shear-coupled diffusion mechanism is proposed to explain the ultrafast coarsening rate of the T1 phase in early deformation. During the dynamic precipitation of the T1 phase, an anomalous inhomogeneous size and spatial distribution of the T1 phase are observed, and a high number density of fine T1 phases form in the matrix (with a denser, thinner and shorter size at the dislocation wall). The dynamically precipitated T1 phase is affected by the octahedral slip system during the coarsening process and exhibits a selective ripening phenomenon. The T1 phase formed by aging increases the inhomogeneity of the deformation and induces many substructures intragranularly, decreasing the percentage of CDRX grains but increasing the CDRX potential. Conversely, the dynamically precipitated T1 phase and its evolution accelerate CDRX development by promoting the transformation of LAGBs to HAGBs. In addition, the effects of dynamically evolving precipitates on the dislocations and formation modes of LAGBs at various deformation stages are elucidated. The results can provide valuable insights into the regulation of microstructure, and the development of high-performance Al–Cu–Li alloys, and also offer a theoretical and experimental basis for microstructure modeling.

Kinetic Energy Cascade Induced by the Interaction of Mean Flow, Topography, and Mesoscale Eddies East of Taiwan: A Scale-to-Scale Analysis

Abstract The scale-to-scale kinetic energy (KE) cascade induced by the nonlinear interaction among topography, the Kuroshio, and mesoscale eddies is systematically investigated in the coarse-graining framework based on simulated data from the well-validated Regional Ocean Model System. The KE transfer exhibits inhomogeneous spatial and temporal distributions and varies with length scale. During current–topography interaction, the KE transfers downscale across larger scales and reversely across smaller scales with an inherent separation scale of 150 km northeast of Taiwan, resulting in a significant positive net KE flux for mesoscale motions. The transfer around Suao Ridge is consistently downscaled with significant seasonal variation that is stronger in summer and weaker in winter. South of Suao Ridge, the transfer is one order of magnitude weaker and changes greatly with time. The cyclonic (anticyclonic) eddy weakens (enhances) KE transfer in most study areas. In particular, the cyclonic eddy reverses the transfer direction around Suao Ridge. The anticyclonic eddy triggers a significant bidirectional transfer south of Suao Ridge. Analyses show that the special arc-shaped topographic feature and northwestward Kuroshio intrusion current are responsible for the nature of bidirectional KE transfer northeast of Taiwan. The direction of mean current relative to the topography gradient determines the Rossby number magnitude and the KE transfer direction. The large-scale circulation determines the transfer intensity by changing the horizontal shear and barotropic instabilities. The KE transfer caused by nonlinear dynamics contributes significantly to the total anticyclonic eddy-induced net KE flux changes. In particular, the inverse KE cascade plays a key role in net KE flux changes in mesoscale motions east of Taiwan. Significance Statement In this work, we clarify the scale-to-scale kinetic energy transfer east of Taiwan. Energy transfer varies in different subareas. It is bidirectional northeast of Taiwan, consistently downscale around Suao Ridge, and weak and variable south of Suao Ridge. These transfer characteristics are closely related to the direction of mean flow relative to the topography gradient. Mesoscale eddies can trigger bidirectional transfer and even reverse the transfer direction. The reverse cascade is as important as the forward cascade for the total mesoscale energy change. This study not only shows an example of KE cascade when strong currents pass through continental slope, sea ridge, and open ocean, but also is of great significance for studying the dynamical and ecological environment variation of marginal sea.

Controlling nonlinear collapse of ellipticity and orientation of a co-variant vector optical field.

A vector optical field with inhomogeneous spatial polarization distribution offers what we believe to be a new paradigm to form controllable filaments. However, it is challenging to steer multiple performances (e.g. number, orientation, and interval) of filaments in transparent nonlinear media at one time. Herein, we theoretically self-design and generate a kind of believed to be novel ellipticity and orientation co-variant vector optical field to interact with Kerr medium to solve this issue. The collapsing behaviors of such a new hybrid vector optical field reveal that, by judiciously adjusting the inherent topological charge and initial phase of incident optical field, we are able to give access to stable collapsing filamentation with tunable numbers, orientations and interval. Additionally, the collapsing patterns presented are immune nearly to the extra random noise. The relevant mechanism behind the collapse of the vector optical field is elucidated as well. The findings in this work may have huge potential in optical signal processing, laser machining, and other related applications.

Testing the cosmological principle with the Pantheon+ sample and the region-fitting method

The cosmological principle is fundamental to the standard cosmological model. It assumes that the Universe is homogeneous and isotropic on very large scales. As the basic assumption, it must stand the test of various observations. In this work, we investigated the properties of the Pantheon+ sample, including redshift distribution and position distribution, and we give its constraint on the flat ΛCDM model: Ωm = 0.36 ± 0.02 and H0 = 72.83 ± 0.23 km s−1 Mpc−1. Then, using the region fitting (RF) method, we mapped the all-sky distribution of cosmological parameters (Ωm and H0) and find that the distribution significantly deviates from isotropy. A local matter underdensity region exists toward (308.4°−48.7+47.6, −18.2°−28.8+21.1) as well as a preferred direction of the cosmic anisotropy (313.4°−18.2+19.6, −16.8°−10.7+11.1) in galactic coordinates. Similar directions may imply that local matter density might be responsible for the anisotropy of the accelerated expansion of the Universe. Results of statistical isotropy analyses including Isotropy and Isotropy with real-data positions (RP) show high confidence levels. For the local matter underdensity, the statistical significances are 2.78σ (isotropy) and 2.34σ (isotropy RP). For the cosmic anisotropy, the statistical significances are 3.96σ (isotropy) and 3.15σ (isotropy RP). The comparison of these two kinds of statistical isotropy analyses suggests that inhomogeneous spatial distribution of real sample can increase the deviation from isotropy. The similar results and findings are also found from reanalyses of the low-redshift sample (lp+) and the lower screening angle (θmax = 60°), but with a slight decrease in statistical significance. Overall, our results provide clear indications for a possible cosmic anisotropy. This possibility must be taken seriously. Further testing is needed to better understand this signal.

Vibration of microperforated plate with spatial distribution of multiple-sized perforations

Recent works by the authors on homogeneous MPPs have highlighted the structural damping capabilities of MPPs in the low frequency range. The developed theoretical approach was based on the analogy between an MPP and a porous plate. The added damping is due to visco-thermic effects coupled to fluid-structure interactions. The added damping maxes out at a characteristic frequency depending on perforation diameter. In order to reduce plate vibrations, it was advised to match the characteristic frequency to a plate mode. It is proposed here to maximize the added damping effect on several vibration modes by focusing on MPPs with multiple-sized perforations and with spatial distribution of perforations. As an extension of the previous analytical model, an approach based on the electro-acoustic analogy is established to capture the effect of multiple-sized perforations. Moreover, a perforation ratio gradient is included in the approach to model an MPP with inhomogeneous spatial distribution of perforations. Experimental measurements on MPPs validate the proposed analytical model. Results show that: (i) MPP with multiple-sized perforations increases the frequency band of the effective damping; (ii) the added damping increases when the perforations are distributed around the antinodes of the considered mode, (iii) the two effects can be combined.

Diffusion-Reaction-Deformation Coupled Modeling of Large-Deformed Germanium Thin Film Anodes

Germanium is known as a high-capacity material that reversibly stores large amounts of lithium, whereas the inevitable volume changes lead to mechanical failures and unstable reaction interfaces. According to the finite deformation theory, we establish a theoretical framework to capture the viscoplastic flow and the interfacial transfer kinetics during lithiation and delithiation under coupled diffusion-reaction-deformation environments. Many microcracks on the surface of germanium electrodes are observed by previous experiments, and we take this effect into consideration by associating the parameters of Li-Ge alloy with the degree of lithiation, such as the concentration-dependent elasticity modulus and yield stress. Subsequently, the framework is used to calculate the mechanical and electrochemical response of thin film electrodes during charge and discharge under the rigid substrate constraint. The results suggest that charge rate and electrode thickness determine the performance of thin film battery, which is in accordance with the experimentally observed phenomenon. The Cauchy stress in the thin film electrode is also subject to the effect of the inhomogeneous spatial distribution of stress, and the stress drop at the ends of the electrodes is the main source of material fracture failure.

Images of Betelgeuse with VLTI/MATISSE across the Great Dimming

ABSTRACT From Nov. 2019 to May 2020, the red supergiant star Betelgeuse experienced an unprecedented drop of brightness in the visible domain called the Great Dimming event (GDE). Large atmospheric dust clouds and large photospheric convective features are suspected to be responsible for it. To better understand the dimming event, we used mid-infrared long-baseline spectro-interferometric measurements of Betelgeuse taken with the Very Large Telescope Interferometer/Multi AperTure mid-Infrared SpectroScopic Experiment (VLTI/MATISSE) instrument before (Dec. 2018), during (Feb. 2020), and after (Dec. 2020) the GDE. We present data in the 3.98–4.15 µm range to cover SiO spectral features molecules as well as adjacent continuum. We have employed geometrical models, image reconstruction, as well as radiative transfer models to monitor the spatial distribution of SiO over the stellar surface. We find a strongly inhomogeneous spatial distribution of SiO that appears to be looking very different between our observing epochs, indicative of a vigorous activity in the stellar atmosphere. The contrast of our images is small in the pseudo-continuum for all epochs, implying that our MATISSE observations support both cold spot and dust cloud model.

Inhomogeneous spatial distribution of non radiative recombination centers in GaN/InGaN nanowire heterostructures studied by cathodoluminescence

In order to elucidate the mechanisms responsible for cathodoluminescence intensity variations at the scale of single InGaN/GaN nanowire heterostructures, a methodology is proposed based on a statistical analysis on ensembles of several hundreds of nanowires exhibiting a diameter of 180, 240 and 280 nm. For 180 nm diameter, we find that intensitiy variations are consistent with incorporation of point defects obeying Poisson’s statistics. For wider diameters, intensity variations at the scale of single NWs are observed and assigned to local growth conditions fluctuations. Finally, for the less luminescent nanowires, a departure from Poisson’s statistics is observed suggesting the possible clustering of non independent point defects.

From network to channel: Crack-based strain sensors with high sensitivity, stretchability, and linearity via strain engineering

High-performance stretchable strain sensors are highly desirable for various scenarios, such as health monitoring and human-robot interfaces. Here, we propose a universal strain engineering strategy that introduces an inhomogeneous spatial distribution of stress and promotes crack propagation behavior leading to a critical state between network and channel morphologies, achieving stretchable strain sensors with high sensitivity, a wide working range and good linearity. Approaches for introducing soft-rigid interfaces, enlarging elastic modulus mismatches and matching dimensions have been employed to execute the strategy for network-crack strain sensors with collapsed nanocone cluster structures as representatives. The strain sensors can be tuned to realize a gauge factor of 690.95 in a linear working range of 0–40% (R2 = 0.993) or a gauge factor of 113.70 in a larger linear working range of 0–120% (R2 = 0.999). Intraocular pressure monitoring and dynamic facial asymmetry assessment have been demonstrated based on these sensors to show their great application potential.

A census and properties of mesoscale Kuril eddies in the altimetry era

The ocean-side area of the Kuril Islands is a region with high bioproductivity and rich fishing and a convergence of transformed subtropical and subarctic waters with significant impact on weather and climate. Waters of different origin mix in the region including Kuroshio Extention, Japan Sea, Oyashio, Okhotsk Sea and Alaskan Stream waters. Despite the important role of Kuril eddies (KE) in transporting heat, salt, nutrients and their biological activity, there are still major gaps in our knowledge of the properties and dynamics of these energetic and mesoscale features in the northwestern Pacific Ocean. Using altimetry data during 1993–2021, we conducted the first systematic census of KE with the help of the automatic eddy tracking algorithm AMEDA. We separated KE into four groups according to their places of formation in relation to the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench and found a strong inhomogeneous spatial distribution of the Kuril cyclones (KC) and anticyclones (KAC). Different kinematic properties of KE have been studied and analyzed. The Trench has been found to play a role of an eddy guide for long-lived eddies with a comparatively small number of KE being able to cross the Trench. The highest occurrence frequency of KAC was observed along the Trench, especially in the area east off the Bussol Strait, whereas KC occurred more frequently along the ocean side of the Trench. Among the observed long-lived KE, there were more than 90% of eddies with the nonlinearity parameter exceeding 1 implying that the majority of KE are coherent vortices transporting water with its properties. The relative concentrations of waters of different origin inside KAC and KC cores were computed for each group applying the new Lagrangian algorithm. It allowed us to detect transportation of subtropical water in the KE cores to north and subarctic water to south over the distance of the order of 1000 km and more.

Characterization of aperiodic surfaces with mesh-based parameters

For technical surfaces, it is important to know their functional purpose and to characterize them accordingly. Therefore, ISO 21920–2 in 2D and ISO 25178–2 in 3D offer parameters that can assess surface functional properties. The topographic portions of a surface, for example hills and dales, can be classified as features and evaluated using feature parameters. However, no parameter exists to describe the spatial distribution of features with regard to the degree of homogeneity for aperiodic surfaces. Here we show the application of the Delaunay triangulation to quantify the spatial distribution respectively the geometric relationship of features. Therefore, the feature points are determined by watershed analysis and the resulting point cloud is meshed in 2D. Based on that mean and standard deviation of the triangle side lengths and the area disorder (AD) are calculated as new parameters. The method is demonstrated for sandblasted and chrome-plated specimens. In addition simulation is used to generate more data for analysis. With the proposed approach the distinction and extent of uniform, homogeneous or inhomogeneous spatial distributions of features with parameter AD can be determined.

On the clustering of low-aspect-ratio oblate spheroids settling in ambient fluid

We have performed particle-resolved direct numerical simulations of many heavy non-spherical particles settling under gravity in the dilute regime. The particles are oblate spheroids of aspect ratio $1.5$ and density ratio $1.5$ . Two Galileo numbers are considered, namely $111$ and $152$ , for which a single oblate spheroid follows a steady vertical and a steady oblique path, respectively. In both cases, a strongly inhomogeneous spatial distribution of the disperse phase in the form of columnar clusters is observed, with a significantly enhanced average settling velocity as a consequence. Thus, in contrast to previous results for spheres, the qualitative difference in the single-particle regime does not result in a qualitatively different behaviour of the many-particle cases. In addition, we have carried out an analysis of pairwise interactions of particles in the well-known drafting–kissing–tumbling set-up, for oblate spheroids of aspect ratio $1.5$ and for spheres. We have varied systematically the relative initial position between the particle pair and we have considered free-to-rotate particles and rotationally locked ones. We have found that the region of attraction for both particle shapes, with and without rotation, is very similar. However, significant differences occur during the drafting and tumbling phases. In particular, free-to-rotate spheres present longer drafting phases and separate quickly after the collision. Spheroids remain close to each other for longer times after the collision, and free-to-rotate ones experience two or more collision events. Therefore, we have observed a shape-induced increase in the interaction time which might explain the increased tendency to cluster of the many-particle cases.
