Effect of Pretreatment of Anaerobic Acid Fermentation Sludge from Mixed Swine Wastewater and Food Waste Leachate on Biohydrogen Generation

Objectives:This study aims to investigate the effects of heat shock and 2-bromoethanesulfonate (2-BES) injection on hydrogen production and methanogens inhibition in anaerobic acid fermenter sludge and methane fermenter sludge using mixed swine wastewater and food waste leachate as substrates. Additionally, the analysis of biogas, fermentation products such as volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and alcohols, and microbial community changes were conducted to derive efficient pretreatment conditions for anaerobic hydrogen generation.Methods:Sludge samples were collected from two-phase anaerobic digesters treating swine wastewater and food waste leachate. Heat shock (90°C, 15 min) and 2-BES injection (1, 5, 10, 50, and 100 mmol/L) pretreatments were applied to the each sludge, along with control reactor without pretreatment before anaerobic digestion. Batch experiments were conducted at 30°C to assess biogas, organic compounds (COD, VS, VFAs, and alcohols), and microbial community composition.Results and Discussion:In methanogenic sludge, hydrogen gas was not produced under all conditions, but heat shock method inhibited methane production more effectively than 2-BES injection method. As the concentration of 2-BES increased, methane production decreased. Conversely, hydrogen was produced from the all acid fermentation sludges, mainly attributed to the butyric acid production by dominant Clostridium spp., but the pattern of biogas production varied over time. In the experimental group injected with 2-BES, even at a low concentration of 1 mmol/L, methane gas did not produce due to the inhibition of methanogens. However, in the control group, produced hydrogen was entirely converted to methane by hydrogenotrophic methanogens such as Methanobrevibacter and Methanosphaera. The heat shock group showed delayed hydrogen production due to prolonged lag phase of hydrogen-producing bacteria, with hydrogenotrophic methanogen metabolism starting after 12 days. Heat shock and 2-BES injection reduced bacterial diversity in the acid fermentation process compared to the initial stage.Conclusion:For efficient anaerobic hydrogen production from swine wastewater and food waste leachate, 2-BES injection into the acid fermentation sludge was found to be a preferable method over heat shock, considering hydrogen production efficiency and sustained methanogen inhibition. Further research is needed to find more economical and efficient pretreatment methods and operational strategies considering subsequent methane production processes for practical application in the field.

Effect of Biochar on Anaerobic Co-Digestion of Untreated Sewage Sludge with Municipal Organic Waste under Mesophilic Conditions

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a biological process that occurs in the limited presence of oxygen. This process involves various difficulties during the operation, such as acidification and increased concentration of volatile fatty acids, which can inhibit methane production. Therefore, in this work, the impact of biochar on the co-digestion of untreated sludge and residual biomass under mesophilic conditions was studied. For the production of biochar, the gasification process was used at different temperatures: 759 °C (BL), 798 °C (BM), and 888 °C (BH). This biochar was added in concentrations of 0 g/L, 3.33 g/L, and 6.67 g/L at the beginning of the co-digestion process. The results showed that a concentration of 6.67 g/L with BH biochar increased the PBM by 18% compared to the control sample and reduced the chemical oxygen demand (COD) by 88%. In addition, there was a reduction of volatile fatty acids (VFA) of 42.75%. Furthermore, FTIR analysis demonstrated that biochar has appropriate functional groups for this process. These data suggest a good interaction of biochar with the mixture of sludge and municipal waste, indicating that biochar can improve the anaerobic co-digestion of untreated sludge and municipal waste.

Plasticizers inhibit food waste anaerobic digestion performance by affecting microbial succession and metabolism

The widely existed plastic additive plasticizers in organic wastes possibly pose negative influence on anaerobic digestion (AD) performance, the direct evidence about the effects of plasticizers on AD performance is still lacking. This study evaluated the influencing mechanism of two typical plasticizers bisphenol A (BPA) and dioctyl phthalate on the whole AD process. Results indicated that plasticizers addition inhibited methane production, and the inhibiting effects were reinforced with the increase of concentration. By contrast, 50mg/L BPA exhibited the strongest inhibition on methane production. Physicochemical analysis showed plasticizers inhibited the metabolism efficiency of soluble polysaccharide and volatile fatty acids. Microbial communities analyses suggested that plasticizers inhibited the direct interspecies electron transfer participators of methanogenic archaea (especially Methanosarcina) and syntrophic bacteria. Furthermore, plasticizers inhibited the methane metabolisms, key coenzymes (CoB, CoM, CoF420 and methanofuran) biosynthesis and the metabolisms of major organic matters. This study shed light on the effects of plasticizers on AD performance and provided new insights for assessing the influences of plasticizers or plastic additives on the disposal of organic wastes.

Comparing the effects of Al-based coagulants in waste activated sludge anaerobic digestion: Methane yield, kinetics and sludge implications

Due to its effectiveness and ease of application, the process of flocculation and coagulation is often used for pollution removal in wastewater treatment. Most of these coagulants precipitate and accumulate in waste activated sludge (WAS), and could negatively affect sludge treatments, as observed for anaerobic digestion. Nowadays, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are widely discussed because of the current paradigm shift from linear to circular economy, and the treatments performed at the facility should be planned to avoid or reduce adverse effects on other processes. The aim of this study was to compare the impact of poly aluminum chloride (PAC) and aluminum sulfate (AS) on WAS anaerobic digestion, by feeding replicate serum reactors with different levels of coagulant (5, 10 and 20 mg Al/g TS). Reactors without the addition of any coagulants represented the control group. Results revealed that Al-based coagulants inhibited methane production, which decreased as the coagulant addition increased. The inhibition was much more severe in AS-conditioned reactors, showing average reductions in methane yield from 14.4 to 31.7%, compared to the control (167.76 ± 1.88 mL CH4/g VS). Analytical analysis, FTIR and SEM investigations revealed that the addition of coagulants affected the initial conditions of the anaerobic reactors, penalizing the solubilization, hydrolysis and acidogenesis phases. Furthermore, the massive formation of H2S in AS-conditioned reactors played a key role in the suppression of methane phase. On the other hand, the use of coagulant can promote the accumulation and recovery of nutrient in WAS, especially in terms of phosphorus. Our findings will expand research knowledge in this field and guide stakeholders in the choice of coagulants at full scale plant. Future research should focus on reducing the effect of coagulants on methane production by modifying or testing new types of flocculants.

Thermal hydrolysis alleviates polyethylene microplastic-induced stress in anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge

Microplastics are known to negatively affect anaerobic digestion (AD) of waste activated sludge. However, whether thermal hydrolysis (TH) pretreatment alters the impact of microplastics on sludge AD remains unknown. Herein, the effect of TH on the impact of polyethylene (PE) microplastics in sludge AD was investigated. The results showed that the inhibition of methane production by PE at 100 particles/g total solids (TS) was reduced by 31.4% from 12.1% to 8.3% after TH at 170 °C for 30 min. Mechanism analysis indicated TH reduced the potential for reactive oxygen species production induced by PE, resulting in a 29.1 ± 5.5% reduction in cell viability loss. In addition, additive leaching increased as a result of rapid aging of PE microplastics by TH. Acetyl tri-n-butyl citrate (ATBC) release from PE with 10 and 100 particles/g TS increased 11.5-fold and 8.6-fold after TH to 68.2 ± 5.5 μg/L and 124.0 ± 5.1 μg/L, respectively. ATBC at 124.0 μg/L increased methane production by 21.4%. The released ATBC enriched SBR1031 and Euryarchaeota, which facilitate the degradation of proteins and promote methane production. This study reveals the overestimated impact of PE microplastics in sludge AD and provides new insights into the PE microplastics-induced impact in practical sludge treatment and anaerobic biological processes.

The Potential of Ozonation to Reduce Impact of Waste Sludge-Entrapped Microplastics to Biogas Production

ABSTRACT Due to low degradability of plastic materials, high usage, and low cost, microplastics (MPs) is becoming ubiquitous environmental pollutant. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) are one of main sources, where most of the MPs from wastewaters ends in waste sludge. Anaerobic digestion is one of most promised techniques of waste sludge management. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the impact of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polypropylene (PP) microplastics in the waste sludge with and without ozonation as possible pretreatment, on biogas and methane production with OxiTop® method. In the first set of experiments, PET inhibited (up to 6% at 0.1 g L−1) or promoted (up to 3% at 1 g L−1) methane production but increased cumulative biogas production (up to 38% at 0.5 g L−1). PP inhibited methane production (up to 5% at 0.5 g L−1) but its impact on biogas production was dependent upon concentration of MPs added. In the second set of experiments, pretreatment of non-contaminated waste sludge by ozonation (3.54 gozone h−1) inhibited methane yield. Longer time of ozonation of PP-contaminated waste sludge reduced inhibition of methane yield, while in the case of PET-contaminated waste sludge, it was increased.

Influence of Inoculum Thermal Pretreatment Time on Hydrogen Production in Dark Fermentation

Dark fermentation (DF) of kitchen waste (KW) is a promising technology for the production of renewable biohydrogen. It can be both a method of obtaining clean energy and a sustainable waste management. Despite its potential, this process requires further research to improve efficiency. The aim of the research was to test the effect of thermal pretreatment of the inoculum on H2 and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production in the DF process. The process was carried out at 37 °C, in batch mode. The digested sludge from the Group Wastewater Treatment Plant in Lodz was used as inoculum. KW from households was used as substrate. The inoculum was pre-treated at 70 °C for 15 and 30 min. Two control reference experiments were also used. The first without the inoculum, and the second without heating the inoculum. The thermal pretreatment inhibited methane production and increased hydrogen production. After the thermal pretreatment, the amount of CO2 produced during the process decreased compared to the bioreactor without inoculum pretreatment. Additionally, the main VFAs in the samples with pretreated inoculum were acetic and butyric acids, which are associated with hydrogen production in the biochemical pathways of the DF process. However, the time of thermal pretreatment had no significant effect on H2 production.

Effects of food to inoculum ratio and ultrasound pre-treatment on biogas production from dissolved air flotation waste from dairy industry

Dissolved air flotation (DAF) waste, a byproduct with high lipid content separated from dairy wastewater, is disposed of by land spreading and causing environmental pollution. To develop a sustainable treatment for DAF waste, this study investigated the effects of food to inoculum (F/I) ratio and ultrasound pre-treatment on the anaerobic digestion of DAF waste. The biochemical methane potential (BMP) of tested DAF waste ranged from 436–566 mL CH4/g VSfed. Increasing the F/I ratio (>1.0) inhibited methane production due to long chain fatty acids (LCFA) accumulation, which high concentrations of oleate inhibited methanogenesis and delayed palmitate degradation. Ultrasound pre-treatment with 30 min pulse (10 s on/ 10 s off) and 15 min continuous operations increased soluble chemical oxygen demand in DAF waste by 82% and 52%, respectively. Moreover, continuous sonication removed 38% of LCFA due to the implosion of cavitation bubbles. The BMP of DAF waste increased by 36% after sonication with F/I ratio 3.0. However, the lag time of methane production was prolonged after sonication due to the fast release of LCFA to the bulk solution. By implementing ultrasound pre-treatment and optimizing the F/I ratio, the energy potential of DAF waste can be harnessed, leading to more sustainable practices in dairy production.

A long aging time had severely inhibited methane production from Fe-chemically enhanced primary sedimentation sludge during anaerobic digestion

Fe-chemically enhanced primary sedimentation (CEPS) process is a cost-effective method to capture organics from municipal wastewater into Fe-CEPS sludge. Anaerobic digestion (AD) has been proven to be an efficient and economical method to treat Fe-CEPS sludge. Meanwhile, the CEPS sludge produced by sedimentation is generally stored on-site for days to months. During this period, different iron species in Fe-CEPS sludge can form, potentially influencing subsequent methane production. Thus, this study investigated the biodegradability of Fe-CEPS sludges after different aging times, ranging from 0 to 35 days, during the AD process. The results indicated that iron-bearing species gradually transformed into more crystalline phases, with the content increasing from 6.17 to 21.72 mg/g as the aging time extended. Furthermore, the highest methane yield was obtained from the fresh Fe-CEPS sludge, reaching a value of 186.18 mL CH4/g TS. However, with increasing aging time, methane yields significantly decreased, reaching the lowest yield of 35.73 mL CH4/g TS in the group with an aging time of 35 days. This suggests that prolonged aging time severely inhibits methane production from Fe-CEPS sludge. Significant negative relationships were observed between methane yield and vivianite-P, crystalline iron (Cry-Fe) (r = −0.97, p < 0.01; r = −0.94, p < 0.01). Conversely, the TOC content of the aged sludges exhibited a strongly positive correlation with methane yield (r = 0.88, p < 0.05). These findings suggest that the formation of vivianite-P, Cry-Fe, and microbiological oxidation resulting from prolonged aging times are the main contributors to inhibiting subsequent methane production.

Can freshwater plants and algae act as an effective feed supplement to reduce methane emissions from ruminant livestock?

Methane production by livestock is a substantial component of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. The marine red algae, Asparagopsis taxiformis, has been identified as a possible supplement in livestock feeds due to its potent inhibition of methane production but currently is unable to be produced at scale. Finding additional taxa that inhibit methane production is therefore desirable. Here we provide foundational evidence of methanogenesis-inhibiting properties in Australian freshwater plants and algae, reviewing candidate species and testing species' chemical composition and efficacy in vitro. Candidate plant species and naturally-occurring algal mixes were collected and assessed for ability to reduce methane in batch testing and characterised for biochemical composition, lipids and fatty acids, minerals and DNA. We identified three algal mixes and one plant (Montia australasica) with potential to reduce methane yield in in vitro batch assay trials. All three algal mixes contained Spirogyra, although additional testing would be needed to confirm this alga was responsible for the observed activity. For the two samples that underwent multiple dose testing, Algal mix 1 (predominantly Spirogyra maxima) and M. australasica, there seems to be an optimum dose but sources, harvesting and storage conditions potentially determine their methanogenesis-inhibiting activity. Based on their compositions, fatty acids are likely to be acting to reduce methane in Algal mix 1 while M. australasica likely contains substantial amounts of the flavonoids apigenin and kaempferol, which are associated with methane reduction. Based on their mineral composition, the samples tested would be safe for livestock consumption at an inclusion rate of 20%. Thus, we identified multiple Australian species that have potential to be used as a feed supplement to reduce methane yield in livestock which may be suitable for individual farmers to grow and feed, reducing complexities of supply associated with marine alternatives and suggesting avenues for investigation for similar species elsewhere.

PSXIII-23 Effect of Methionine Inclusion in Mineral Mixture on Greenhouse Gas Production

Abstract The reduction in enteric methane production in cattle can have a rapid impact on global warming. Therefore, changes in the population of microorganisms in the rumen can significantly reduce the production of this greenhouse gas. This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the production of gases and methane with the inclusion of Suplemax mineral mixture containing methionine. The experiment was carried out under anaerobic conditions using ANKOM Gas Pressure Monitor bottles kept at 39 ºC containing artificial saliva, ruminal fluid, and two grams of a substrate from each treatment: (FE) Control, 1.75 g of Tifton hay 85 and 0.25 g of a mineral mix; and (FM) 1.75 g of hay and 0.25 g of Suplemax mineral mixture (Suplemento Nutrição Animal) containing 0.3% of methionine. Duplicate substrates and duplicate blanks were fermented for each treatment in two runs, with a total of four repetitions per treatment. The accumulated pressure resulting from the fermentation was measured automatically over 48 h using the Gas Monitor software connected to the ANKOM modules of each bottle. The conversion of pressure to gas volume was calculated as follows: Volume (mL) = 2.3932 + 3.4053 × pressure (R2 = 0.9146; n = 1.151). At the end of each run, a gas sample was collected from each bottle to measure methane concentration using gas chromatography. To obtain the methane production for every 100 mL of gas produced, the total volume of methane produced was multiplied by 100 and divided by the total gas production. Data were analyzed in a completely randomized design using analysis of variance (ANOVA) at α = 0.05. There was no significant effect on gas production with the inclusion of 0,3% of methionine (FE 37.77 mL vs FM 42.54 mL, P = 0.3175; Table 1). Methane production decreased from 22.74 to 18.15 mL (P = 0.0121) in the FM treatment compared with the FE treatment, representing a 20.18% decrease. Methane production for every 100 mL of gas decreased by 31.08% with the inclusion of methionine (FE 61.62 vs FM 42.47 mL, P = 0.0248). The inclusion of methionine in the mineral supplement contributes to a change in the molar proportion of short-chain fatty acids, increasing propiogenesis, that is considered a sink of hydrogen ions in the ruminal environment, which in turn inhibits methane production. Thus, the inclusion of Suplemax with hay reduced gas and methane production in vitro.

Machine learning-based prediction of methane production from lignocellulosic wastes

The biochemical methane potential test is a standard method to determine the biodegradability of lignocellulosic wastes (LWs) during anaerobic digestion (AD) with disadvantages of long experiment duration and high operating expense. This paper developed a machine learning model to predict the cumulative methane yield (CMY) using the data of 157 LWs regarding physicochemical characteristics, digestion condition and methane yield, with the coefficient of determination equal to 0.869. Model interpretability analyses underscored lignin content, organic loading, and nitrogen content as pivotal attributes for CMY prediction. For the feedstocks with a cellulose content exceeding about 50%, the CMY in the early AD stage would be relatively lower than those with low cellulose content, but prolonging digestion time could promote methane production. Besides, lignin content in feedstock surpassing 15% would significantly inhibit methane production. This work contributes to valuable guidance for feedstock selection and operation optimization for AD plants.

Mechanistic insights into synergistic facilitation of copper/zinc ions and dewatered swine manure-derived biochar on anaerobic digestion of swine wastewater

Biochar-assisted anaerobic digestion (AD) has been proposed an advanced system for swine wastewater (SW) management. However, the effects of metallic nutrients in SW, such as copper/zinc ions (Cu2+/Zn2+), on the biochar-assisted AD of SW are not well understood. This study investigated the influences of individual Cu2+/Zn2+ or dewatered swine manure-derived biochar, as well as their combined additions, on the AD of SW. The results showed that exposure to 50 mg/L Cu2+/Zn2+ temporary inhibited methane production, but the addition of 20 g/L biochar alleviated this inhibition by shortening the methanogenic lag time and increasing methane yield. Following a period of acclimation, both Cu2+/Zn2+ and biochar promoted methane production, although metagenomic analysis revealed distinct mechanisms underlying their promotion. Cu2+/Zn2+ enhanced ATP processing, including electron exchange between NADH/NAD+ and succinate/fumarate transformation, by 26.0–35.8%. Additionally, the gene encoding Coenzyme M methylation was upregulated by 36.2% along with enrichments of Methanocullus and Methanosarcina, contributing to accelerated hydrolysis and methanogenesis rates by 54.7% and 44.8%, respectively. On the other hand, biochar mainly stimulated bacterial F-type ATPase activities by 28.4%, likely facilitating direct interspecies electron transfer between Geobacter and Methanosarcina for syntrophic methanogenesis. The combined addition of Cu2+/Zn2+ and biochar resulted in “win-win” benefits, significantly increasing the maximum methane production rate from 40.3 mL CH4/d to 53.7 mL CH4/d. Moreover, the introduction of biochar into AD of SW facilitated the transformation of more Cu2+/Zn2+ from a reducible Fe–Mn oxides form to a residual form, which potentially reduced the metallic toxicity of the digestate for soil amendment. The findings of this study provide novel insights into understanding the synergistic impacts of heavy metals and biochar in regulating SW during AD, as well as the management of associated digestate.

Inhibitory Effects of Ammonia on Archaeal 16S rRNA Transcripts in Thermophilic Anaerobic Digester Sludge

High temperatures exacerbate the ammonia inhibition of anaerobic digestion coupled with methanogenesis. The inhibition of methane production by ammonia has been observed in other studies. However, the underlying mechanism is not well understood and requires further investigation. This study explored the effect of ammonia stress on archaeal 16S rRNA transcripts in thermophilic anaerobic digester sludge. Different ammonium concentrations were checked for their influence on the methanogenic rate and hydrogen accumulation. Quantitative PCR was used to compare the changes in total archaeal 16S rRNA expression. A Monte Carlo permutation test within redundancy analysis (RDA) was adopted for exploring the relationship between environmental variables and archaeal 16S rRNA and their transcripts. The results showed that with the increase in ammonium concentration, the methanogenic rate decreased and hydrogen accumulation occurred. The total archaeal 16S rRNA genes and transcripts copy numbers decreased significantly in treatments with higher ammonium concentrations (7 and 10 g NH4+-N/L), but did not change much at lower ammonia concentrations (3 g NH4+-N/L) compared with the 0 g NH4+-N/L treatment. The RDA analysis further revealed that most environmental variables, including ammonia and methane, except for formate, were significantly correlated with the community structure activity of archaeal 16S rRNA transcripts rather than the community structure of their genes. The composition of archaeal 16S rRNA transcripts showed that the hydrogenotrophic methanogen Methanothermobacter dominated the methanogenic community activity in all incubations. It exhibited sensitivity to ammonia stress and should be responsible for the methanogenic inhibition under thermophilic conditions. Our findings suggested that archaeal 16S rRNA transcripts, rather than 16S rRNA genes, are key indicators of ammonia stress and methanogenic activity.

Effects of Fumarate and Nitroglycerin on In Vitro Rumen Fermentation, Methane and Hydrogen Production, and on Microbiota.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of fumarate and nitroglycerin on rumen fermentation, methane and hydrogen production, and microbiota. In vitro rumen fermentation was used in this study with four treatment groups: control (CON), fumarate (FA), nitroglycerin (NG) and fumarate plus nitroglycerin (FN). Real-time PCR and 16S rRNA gene sequencing were used to analyze microbiota. The results showed that nitroglycerin completely inhibited methane production and that this resulted in hydrogen accumulation. Fumarate decreased the hydrogen accumulation and improved the rumen fermentation parameters. Fumarate increased the concentration of propionate and microbial crude protein, and decreased the ratio of acetate to propionate in FN. Fumarate, nitroglycerin and their combination did not affect the abundance of bacteria, protozoa and anaerobic fungi, but altered archaea. The PCoA showed that the bacterial (Anosim, R = 0.747, p = 0.001) and archaeal communities (Anosim, R = 0.410, p = 0.005) were different among the four treatments. Compared with CON, fumarate restored Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Spirochaetae, Actinobacteria, Unclassified Ruminococcaceae, Streptococcus, Treponema and Bifidobacterium in relative abundance in FN, but did not affect Succinivibrio, Ruminobacter and archaeal taxa. The results indicated that fumarate alleviated the depressed rumen fermentation caused by the inhibition of methanogenesis by nitroglycerin. This may potentially provide an alternative way to use these chemicals to mitigate methane emission in ruminants.

Unraveling roles of the intermediate settler in a microaerobic hydrolysis sludge in situ reduction process

The roles of the intermediate settler in the sludge process reduction activated sludge process (SPRAS), and the influences of its hydraulic retention time (HRTST) on pollutant removal and sludge reduction were investigated. Prolonging HRTST from 3.0 to 4.5 and 6.0 h resulted in sludge reduction efficiencies increased from 46.8% to 61.5% and 62.7%. The sludge accumulation in the intermediate settler formed an anaerobic zone but inhibited methane production, and the alternating microaerobic and anaerobic environment in the sludge process reduction (SPR) module increased the microbial diversity and enriched the hydrolytic and fermentative bacteria. Prolonging HRTST accelerated dissolved organic matter release and elevated the degradation of refractory fraction, and improved the sludge properties of the SPRAS. Metagenomic analysis showed that the SPR module enhanced the glycolysis pathway and decoupling metabolism for sludge reduction. The results revealed that the intermediate settler plays dual roles in solid–liquid separation and sludge reduction metabolism.

Insights into high-solids anaerobic digestion of food waste concomitant with sorbate: Performance and mechanisms

High-solids anaerobic digestion (HS-AD) of food waste is increasingly applied commercially. Sorbate, a food preservative extensively used in the food industry, induces potential environmental risks. Results indicated sorbate at 0–10 mg/g volatile solids (VS) slightly inhibited methane production, and the cumulative methane yield suggested a negative correlation with 25 mg/g VS sorbate, with a reduction of 15.0% compared to the control (from 285.7 to 253.6 mL CH4/g VS). The reduction in methane yield could be ascribed to the promotion of solubilization and inhibition of acidogenesis and methanogenesis with sorbate addition. Excessive sorbate (25 mg/g VS) resulted in the inhibition of aceticlastic metabolism and the key enzymes activities (e.g., acetate kinase and coenzyme F420). This study deeply elucidated the response mechanism of HS-AD to sorbate, supplemented the potential ecological risk assessment of sorbate, and could provide insights to further prevent the potential risk of sorbate in anaerobic digestion of food waste.

Insights into the Occurrence, Fate, Impacts, and Control of Food Additives in Food Waste Anaerobic Digestion: A Review.

The recovery of biomass energy from food waste through anaerobic digestion as an alternative to fossil energy is of great significance for the development of environmental sustainability and the circular economy. However, a substantial number of food additives (e.g., salt, allicin, capsaicin, allyl isothiocyanate, monosodium glutamate, and nonnutritive sweeteners) are present in food waste, and their interactions with anaerobic digestion might affect energy recovery, which is typically overlooked. This work describes the current understanding of the occurrence and fate of food additives in anaerobic digestion of food waste. The biotransformation pathways of food additives during anaerobic digestion are well discussed. In addition, important discoveries in the effects and underlying mechanisms of food additives on anaerobic digestion are reviewed. The results showed that most of the food additives had negative effects on anaerobic digestion by deactivating functional enzymes, thus inhibiting methane production. By reviewing the response of microbial communities to food additives, we can further improve our understanding of the impact of food additives on anaerobic digestion. Intriguingly, the possibility that food additives may promote the spread of antibiotic resistance genes, and thus threaten ecology and public health, is highlighted. Furthermore, strategies for mitigating the effects of food additives on anaerobic digestion are outlined in terms of optimal operation conditions, effectiveness, and reaction mechanisms, among which chemical methods have been widely used and are effective in promoting the degradation of food additives and increasing methane production. This review aims to advance our understanding of the fate and impact of food additives in anaerobic digestion and to spark novel research ideas for optimizing anaerobic digestion of organic solid waste.

Graphene oxide addition to anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge: Impact on methane production and removal of emerging contaminants

The effect of graphene oxide on the anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge was investigated at two graphene oxide concentrations (0.025 and 0.075 g graphene oxide per g volatile solids) using biochemical methane potential tests. The occurrence of 36 pharmaceuticals was monitored in the solid and liquid phases before and after the anaerobic treatment. The addition of graphene oxide improved the removal of most pharmaceuticals detected, even those that are considered persistent to biological degradation, such as azithromycin, carbamazepine, and diclofenac. No significant differences were observed in the final specific methane production without graphene oxide and with the lowest graphene oxide concentration, yet the highest graphene oxide concentration partially inhibited methane production. The relative abundance of antibiotic resistance genes was not affected by the graphene oxide addition. Finally, significant changes in the microbial community including bacteria and archaea were detected with graphene oxide addition.

Mechanism insights into enhanced treatment of wasted activated sludge by hydrogen-mediated anaerobic digestion.

In the current study, different forms of added gas including H2, CO2, and mixed gas (VH2:VCO2 = 4:1), as well as different hydrogen partial pressures (0.10, 0.30, and 0.50atm) were investigated for the influence on anaerobic performance in waste activated sludge (WAS) treatment. The mixed gas significantly improved methane production by over 20%, which positively correlated with the hydrogen partial pressure. However, pure H2 (0.5atm) heavily inhibited methane production by 76.5%. Combined with the microbial metabolic activity study, H2 accelerated the hydrolysis process. Afterward, mixing with CO2 accelerated H2 and organic consumption, thus promoting WAS degradation and methane production. Based on the most extra release of organics, the mixed group exerted the superior performance with hydrogen partial pressure at 0.3atm. The microbial community analysis evidenced that mixed gas enriched proteolytic and homoacetogenic bacteria and hybrid-trophic methanogens. By metagenomics study, hydrolysis, acetogenic, and methanogenesis pathways were all enhanced via the exogenous addition of H2 and CO2, sustainably transforming WAS towards CH4. This study discovered the mechanism of the enhanced conversion from WAS to CH4 by exogenous H2 and provided a promising approach for WAS reduction and energy recovery.
