Infrared Reflection Absorption Spectroscopy (IRRAS) of Water-Soluble Surfactants: Is it Surface-Specific?

Infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS) is commonly used to study the structure and chemistry of molecules residing at surfaces, including water surfaces, which has far-reaching applications including atmospheric chemistry and food science. However, there is some debate regarding the surface-specificity of IRRAS when examining soluble surfactants on aqueous solutions, and there is some evidence that the surface-specificity may differ between IRRAS of ionic surfactants and soluble organic acids. This paper presents infrared reflection absorption (IRRA) spectra of soluble organic acids underneath monolayers of insoluble surfactants, where the contributions from the insoluble surfactants are subtracted from the spectra to capture "subsurface effects". These "subsurface" spectra demonstrate that IRRA spectra of soluble organic acids are surface specific, and this observation is supported by a simplified model for reflections from "subsurface" layers. Finally, the observations presented here are compared to literature observations regarding the surface-specificity of IRRAS when studying ionic surfactants. Overall, this work demonstrates the utility of IRRAS for studying the structures and chemistry of soluble organic acids at aqueous surfaces.

(Invited) Structure and Dynamics of Interfacial Species in Electrical Double Layer

Understanding electrochemical processes is of importance for many industrial and scientific fields. Especially, interfacial species, such as electrolyte ions and solvent significantly affect electrochemical reaction activity. Surface oxide species also promote or inhibit various electrode reactions; therefore, the oxidation processes of metal electrode have been investigated using in situ vibrational spectroscopy. Infrared (IR) spectroscopy is an important tool because it can detect the complementary vibrational modes of surface oxide species. However, observation of the low-frequency mode is restricted by infusible IR windows such as CaF2, that are generally used in the IR reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS). We developed a complementary IR method that can be used to avoid contamination by dissolved ions from window material. The fusible low-pass IR window can be applied to in-situ IRAS measurements [1,2]. The adsorbed hydroxide was observed on the single crystal Pt electrodes depending on the surface orientation, its coverage was correlated with the decrease in oxygen reduction reaction activity [3]. Recent time resolved X-ray diffraction measurements revealed that there is a delay in the approach of alkali metal cations to surface because the interfacial water causes a blocking effect [4]. Therefore, the kinetics of approaching step in the EDL is significantly different from that of migration in the bulk phase, and the adsorption rate depends on the hydration structure, ionic valence, and ionic size. Although X-ray diffraction provides a distribution of interfacial species, it does not provide sufficient information about species identification and molecular orientation. We investigated the coadsorption dynamics of metal cation and (bi)sulfate anion using time resolved IR measurement [5]. Boron doped diamond (BDD) is a promising material of which properties are significantly different from those of metals and other carbon materials. However, the complex atomic arrangement and oxidation state of the polycrystalline BDD surface inhibit an atomic level study on the relationship between the electrochemical response and surface structure. More detailed surface analyses are necessary for the investigation of the electrode surface of BDD. Resonant infrared irradiation of CO and CH3OH interstellar ices

Context. Solid-phase photo-processes involving icy dust grains greatly affect the chemical evolution of the interstellar medium by leading to the formation of complex organic molecules and by inducing photodesorption. So far, the focus of laboratory studies has mainly been on the impact of energetic ultraviolet (UV) photons on ices, but direct vibrational excitation by infrared (IR) photons is expected to influence the morphology and content of interstellar ices as well. However, little is still known about the mechanisms through which this excess vibrational energy is dissipated, as well as its implications for the structure and ice photochemistry. Aims. In this work, we present a systematic investigation of the behavior of interstellar relevant CO and CH3OH ice analogs following the resonant excitation of vibrational modes using tunable IR radiation. We seek to quantify the IR-induced photodesorption and gain insights into the impact of vibrational energy dissipation on ice morphology. Methods. We utilized an ultrahigh vacuum setup at cryogenic temperatures to grow pure CO and CH3OH ices, as well as mixtures of the two. We exposed the ices to intense, near-monochromatic mid-IR (MIR) free-electron-laser radiation using the LISA end-station at the FELIX free electron laser facility to selectively excite the species. Changes to the ice are monitored by means of reflection-absorption IR spectroscopy combined with quadrupole mass-spectrometry. These methods also allowed us to characterize the photodesorption efficiency. Results. The dissipation of vibrational energy is observed to be highly dependent on the excited mode and the chemical environment of the ice. All amorphous ices undergo some degree of restructuring towards a more organized configuration upon on-resonance irradiation. Moreover, IR-induced photodesorption is observed to occur for both pure CO and CH3OH ices, with interstellar photodesorption efficiencies on the order of 10 molecules cm−2 s−1. This result is comparable to or higher than what is found for UV-induced counterparts. An indirect photodesorption of CO upon vibrational excitation of CH3OH in ice mixtures is also observed to occur, particularly in environments that are rich in methanol. Here, we discuss the astrochemical implications of these IR-induced phenomena.

Formation of Gold Nanoclusters from Goldcarbonyl Chloride inside the Metal-Organic Framework HKUST-1

Gas-phase infiltration of the carbonylchloridogold(I), Au(CO)Cl precursor into the pores of HKUST-1 ([Cu3(BTC)2(H2O)2], Cu-BTC) SURMOFs (surface-mounted metal-organic frameworks; BTC = benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate) leads to Au(CO)Cl decomposition within the MOF through hydrolysis with the aqua ligands on Cu. Small Aux clusters with an average atom number of x ≈ 5 are formed in the medium-sized pores of the HKUST-1 matrix. These gold nanoclusters are homogeneously distributed and crystallographically ordered, which was supported by simulations of the powder X-ray diffractometric characterization. Aux@HKUST-1 was further characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and infrared reflection absorption (IRRA) as well as Raman spectroscopy, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES).

Identification of Intermediates in the Reaction Pathway of SO2 on the CaO Surface: From Physisorption to Sulfite to Sulfate.

The interaction of CaO and Ca(OH)2 with solvated or gaseous SO2 plays a crucial role in the corrosion of urban infrastructure by acid rain or in the removal of SO2 from flue gas. We carried out a combined spectroscopic and theoretical investigation on the interaction of SO2 with a CaO(001) single crystal. First, the surface chemistry of SO2 was investigated at different temperatures using polarization-resolved IR reflection absorption spectroscopy. Three species were identified, and an in-depth density functional theory study was carried out, which allowed deriving a consistent picture. Unexpectedly, low temperature exposure to SO2 solely yields a physisorbed species. Only above 100 K, the transformation of this weakly bound adsorbate first to a chemisorbed sulfite and then to a sulfate occurs, effectively passivatating the surface. Our results provide the basis for more efficient strategies in corrosion protection of urban infrastructure and in lime-based desulfurization of flue gas.

Hydrogenation of Formate Species Using Atomic Hydrogen on a Cu(111) Model Catalyst.

The reaction mechanism of the CH3OH synthesis by the hydrogenation of CO2 on Cu catalysts is unclear because of the challenge in experimentally detecting reaction intermediates formed by the hydrogenation of adsorbed formate (HCOOa). Thus, the objective of this study is to clarify the reaction mechanism of the CH3OH synthesis by establishing the kinetic natures of intermediates formed by the hydrogenation of adsorbed HCOOa on Cu(111). We exposed HCOOa on Cu(111) to atomic hydrogen at low temperatures of 200-250 K and observed the species using infrared reflection absorption (IRA) spectroscopy and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) studies. In the IRA spectra, a new peak was observed upon the exposure of HCOOa on Cu(111) to atomic hydrogen at 200 K and was assigned to the adsorbed dioxymethylene (H2COOa) species. The intensity of the new peak gradually decreased with heating from 200 to 290 K, whereas the IR peaks representing HCOOa species increased correspondingly. In addition, small amounts of formaldehyde (HCHO), which were formed by the exposure of HCOOa species to atomic hydrogen, were detected in the TPD studies. Therefore, H2COOa is formed via hydrogenation by atomic hydrogen, which thermally decomposes at ∼250 K on Cu(111). We propose a potential diagram of the CH3OH synthesis via H2COOa from CO2 on Cu surfaces, with the aid of density functional theory calculations and literature data, in which the hydrogenation of bidentate HCOOa to H2COOa is potentially the rate-determining step and accounts for the apparent activation energy of the methanol synthesis from CO2 on Cu surfaces.

Cerium metal oxidation studied by IR reflection-absorption and Raman scattering spectroscopies

Oxidation of cerium metal is a complex process which is strongly affected by the presence of water vapor in the oxidative atmosphere. Here, we explore, by means of infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS) and Raman scattering spectroscopies, thin oxide films, formed on cerium metal during oxidation, under dry vs ambient (humid) air conditions (∼0.2% and ∼50% relative humidities, respectively) and compare them with a thin film of CeO2 deposited on a Si substrate. Complementary analysis of the thin films using x-ray diffraction and focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy enables the correlation between their structure and spectroscopic characterizations. The initial oxidation of cerium metal results in the formation of highly sub-stoichiometric CeO2−x . Under dry air conditions, a major fraction of that oxide reacts with oxygen to form CeO∼2, which is spectroscopically detected by Raman scattering F 2g symmetry mode and by IRAAS F 1u symmetry mode, splitted into doubly-degenerate transverse optic and mono-degenerate longitudinally optic (LO) modes. In contrast, under ambient (humid) conditions, the oxide formed is more heterogenous, as the reaction of CeO2−x diverges towards the dominant formation of Ce(OH)3. Prior to the spectral emergence of Ce(OH)3, hydrogen ions incorporate into the highly sub-stoichiometric oxide, as manifested by Ce–H local vibrational mode detected in the Raman spectrum. The spectroscopic response of the thin oxide layer thus formed is more complex; particularly noted is the absence of the LO mode. It is attributed to the high density of microstructural and compositional defects in the oxide layer, which results in a heterogenous dielectric nature of the thin film, far from being representable by a single phase of CeO∼2.

Electrochemical biosensors based on peptide-kinase interactions at the kinase docking site

Kinases are important cancer biomarkers and are conventionally detected based on their catalytic activity. Kinases regulate cellular activities by phosphorylation of motif-specific multiple substrate proteins, resulting in a lack of selectivity of activity-based kinase biosensors. We present an alternative approach of sensing kinases based on the interactions of their allosteric docking sites with a specific partner protein. The new approach was demonstrated for the ERK2 kinase and its substrate ELK-1. A peptide derived from ELK-1 was bound to a gold electrode and ERK2 sensing was performed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. We performed a detailed analysis of the interaction between the ELK-1 peptide and the kinase on gold surfaces. Atomic force microscopy, variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, and polarization modulation IR reflection-absorption spectroscopy analysis of the gold surface revealed the adsorbed layer of the ERK2 on the peptide monolayer. The sensors showed a high level of target selectivity for ERK2 compared to the p38γ kinase and BSA. ERK2 was detected in its cellular concentration range, 0.5–2.0 μM, and the limit of detection was calculated to be 0.35 μM. Using the flexibility of peptide design, our method is generic for developing sensitive and substrate-specific biosensors and other disease-related enzymes based on their interactions.

Interfacial behavior of Proteinase K enzyme at air-saline subphase

This study investigates the interfacial behavior of the proteinase K enzyme at air–water interface. Adsorption of enzyme on the surface was induced using saline subphase. The surface packing and stability of the enzyme was investigated using of surface pressure-area (π-A) and surface potential-area (ΔV-A) isotherms. Proteinase K enzyme forms film at air-aqueous interface and demonstrates good stability as shown through compression-decompression cycle experiments. To characterize the surface assembly morphology of the interfacial enzymes UV–vis and fluorescence spectroscopic techniques were used. The data revealed that the enzyme Langmuir monolayer has good homogeneity with no evidence of aggregates during compression. The secondary structure of the enzyme at interface was determined to be α-helix using p-polarized infrared-reflection absorption spectroscopy. This was confirmed through Circular dichroism spectra of the enzyme Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film which showed that the major conformation present were α-helices.

Hydrogenation of Accreting C Atoms and CO Molecules–Simulating Ketene and Acetaldehyde Formation Under Dark and Translucent Cloud Conditions

Abstract Simple and complex organic molecules (COMs) are observed along different phases of star and planet formation and have been successfully identified in prestellar environments such as dark and translucent clouds. Yet the picture of organic molecule formation at those earliest stages of star formation is not complete and an important reason is the lack of specific laboratory experiments that simulate carbon atom addition reactions on icy surfaces of interstellar grains. Here we present experiments in which CO molecules as well as C and H atoms are codeposited with H2O molecules on a 10 K surface mimicking the ongoing formation of an “H2O-rich” ice mantle. To simulate the effect of impacting C atoms and resulting surface reactions with ice components, a specialized C-atom beam source is used, implemented on SURFRESIDE3, an ultra-high vacuum cryogenic setup. Formation of ketene (CH2CO) in the solid state is observed in situ by means of reflection absorption IR spectroscopy. C18O and D isotope labeled experiments are performed to further validate the formation of ketene. Data analysis supports that CH2CO is formed through C-atom addition to a CO molecule, followed by successive hydrogenation transferring the formed :CCO into ketene. Efficient formation of ketene is in line with the absence of an activation barrier in C+CO reaction reported in the literature. We also discuss and provide experimental evidence for the formation of acetaldehyde (CH3CHO) and possible formation of ethanol (CH3CH2OH), two COM derivatives of CH2CO hydrogenation. The underlying reaction network is presented and the astrochemical implications of the derived pathways are discussed.

HIPPIE: a new platform for ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy at the MAX IV Laboratory.

HIPPIE is a soft X-ray beamline on the 3 GeV electron storage ring of the MAX IV Laboratory, equipped with a novel ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS) instrument. The endstation is dedicated to performing in situ and operando X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy experiments in the presence of a controlled gaseous atmosphere at pressures up to 30 mbar [1 mbar = 100 Pa] as well as under ultra-high-vacuum conditions. The photon energy range is 250 to 2200 eV in planar polarization and with photon fluxes >1012 photons s-1 (500 mA ring current) at a resolving power of greater than 10000 and up to a maximum of 32000. The endstation currently provides two sample environments: a catalysis cell and an electrochemical/liquid cell. The former allows APXPS measurements of solid samples in the presence of a gaseous atmosphere (with a mixture of up to eight gases and a vapour of a liquid) and simultaneous analysis of the inlet/outlet gas composition by online mass spectrometry. The latter is a more versatile setup primarily designed for APXPS at the solid-liquid (dip-and-pull setup) or liquid-gas (liquid microjet) interfaces under full electrochemical control, and it can also be used as an openport for ad hoc-designed non-standard APXPS experiments with different sample environments. The catalysis cell can be further equipped with an IR reflection-absorption spectrometer, allowing for simultaneous APXPS and IR spectroscopy of the samples. The endstation is set up to easily accommodate further sample environments.

A Graftable Quaternary Ammonium Biocidal Polymer Reduces Biofilm Formation and Ensures Biocompatibility of Medical Devices

AbstractA quaternized polyvinylpyridine (Q‐PVP) polymer methanolic solution synthesized in a single step is used to covalently graft titanium surfaces. Q‐PVP is quaternized with varying N+/N ratios. 1 cm2 pure titanium plates are polished and activated. Treated samples are grafted by spin coating or dip‐coating (grafting‐to method). Surfaces are characterized by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, polarization modulation reflection absorption IR spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and surface charge density calculation. Polymer leaching is assessed at 7 days. Biocompatibility is assessed on MC3T3 and L929 cells (MTT‐assay) and SEM. In vitro antibacterial activity is assessed on methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) at 1 and 24 h (37 °C in brain heart infusion) and at 7 days in a biofilm model. Polymers exceeding 31.3 ± 0.7% quaternization led to bactericidal surfaces. Bactericidal activity increased with surface cationic density. Surface cationic density and biocompatibility are inversely correlated. Polymers with 44.6 ± 1.2% quaternization are antibacterial and biocompatible. High‐density Q‐PVP inhibited MRSA biofilm formation. Q‐PVP is a promising candidate for antibacterial surface modification. Further in vivo studies are required.

Reflection-absorption FTIR study of SF6 thin films in combinational modes region

Reflection-absorption IR (RAIR) spectra of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) crystalline thin films in 10–100 K temperature range and absorption FTIR spectra of thin layer (90 μm) of liquid SF6 near the melting point (Tm = 222 K) are recorded. Special attention is paid to combinational bands region. The three types of band behavior upon phase transitions are identified and illustrated by 3ν6, ν1+ ν3, ν2+ ν3, ν1+ν4 and ν5+ν4 bands. The contours of the latter bands uncharacteristically change upon phase transitions. The different behavior of those bands is explained by the various contributions of different band forming mechanisms, evaluated by the mathematical apparatus of spectral moments.

Tailoring Electric Field Standing Waves in Reflection–Absorption Infrared Spectroscopy to Enhance Absorbance in Buried Molecular Layers

Electric field standing waves (EFSW) that establish within thin films during their characterization by reflection–absorption infrared (RAIR) spectroscopy are shown to result in a >25-fold enhancement in the intensity of absorbance features in a molecularly thin methane (Me) layer buried within Argon (Ar) films. Using an all-optical depth profiling method and describing the interference effects responsible for these phenomena using a classical optics model, modulations in the EFSW amplitude at specific sample thicknesses are demonstrated to be responsible for these strong deviations from Beer–Lambert behavior. Tuning sample thickness is shown to enable the EFSW depth profile to be tailored, conferring greatly enhanced sensitivity and increased spatial selectivity to RAIR spectroscopy. These are highly desirable attributes for the characterization of interfacial structures and mesoscopic dynamic processes within complex buried multilayer assemblies and stratified composite films used to model and study a range of materials and life science phenomena.

Spectroelectrochemistry in the investigation of sol–gel electrochromic V2O5 films

Spectroelectrochemistry can offer important insights into the performance of materials that change properties during electrochemical treatment. The benefits of spectroelectrochemical measurements are shown through the example of an electrochromic sol–gel vanadium(V) oxide (V2O5) film. In situ UV-visible absorbance spectroelectrochemistry is indispensable to reveal the optical modulation, which reached about 28% during the first coloration in the unsafe potential range, but then diminished to around 12% during the following cycles. Ex situ IR and Raman spectroscopy were used to probe the structural modifications that occur during the intercalation of small ions into the orthorhombic structure of the crystalline V2O5 film. In particular, infrared reflection–absorption (IR RA) and IR absorption spectroelectrochemistry confirmed the red shift of the vanadyl band and the disappearance of the bridging oxygen band due to the puckering of layers of VO5 square pyramids following intercalation. In addition, Raman spectra reveal the broad and low-intensity bands of the V2O5 film after it has been coloured in the unsafe potential range. Electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) revealed the presence of vanadium in oxidation states V4+, V4+/V5+, and V5+ on different positions on the bleached film.

Electrochemical Modification of Ni-Rich Bimetallic Ni1-x Mx (M= Bi, Pd and Au) Nanoparticles for Glycerol Electro-Oxidation in Alkaline Media

Glycerol partial electro-oxidation to produce various chemicals has attracted a great amount of attention in the decade [1]. Glycerol is the main by-product of biodiesel production and could be converted into high value-added chemicals. The control of catalyst selectivity and activity could be achieved through formulation of novel, nano-structured electrocatalysts. Nickel (Ni) is an attractive material for glycerol electro-oxidation (GEOR) in alkaline media [2], due to its natural abundance, anti-poising and good stability in alkaline media. Designing inexpensive nano-structured 3D Ni electrodes could improve the catalytic activity of Ni, whereas its selectivity could be modified by adding second metal [1].In the present work, GEOR was investigated on Ni-based mono and bi-metallic Ni x Au 1-x, Ni x Bi 1-x and Ni x Pd 1-x (x = 98, 95 and 90 at. %) nanoparticles in 1M KOH. Ni nanoparticles were synthesized by heatless chemical reduction in ethanol using sodium borohydride (NaBH4) as the reducing agent. Resulting Ni-based NPs were characterized using XRD, XPS, TEM, SEM, EDS mapping, HAADF imaging and EELS. Electrochemical measurements were carried out on Ni-based NPs using cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometry (CA) and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) at room temperature. Results showed that Ni, NiAu and NiBi NPs are active for GEOR and that reaction proceeds through the formation of NiOOH active phase similar to bulk Ni electrodes [3]. Coupling CA with in-situ polarization modulation infrared-reflection absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS) for the simultaneous analysis of products in the bulk electrolyte solution and on the Ni surface demonstrated that the main reaction products on Ni surface are glyceraldehyde, carbonyl and carboxylate ions. Whereas HPLC analysis reveals that Au, Bi and Pd adatoms strongly influence the reaction products by suppressing the pathways with C–C bond cleavage, hindering the formation of formate and enhancing the production of C2 and C3 products at different applied potentials (1.3, 1.4 and 1.55 V) and temperatures (25 and 50 oC).The correlation of electrocatalytic activity and selectivity with nanoparticle will be discussed in terms of mass activities and product distribution during GEOR.

Enhanced nanoplasmonic heating in standoff sensing of explosive residues with infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy.

Various standoff sensing techniques employing optical spectroscopy have been developed to address challenges in safely identifying trace amounts of explosives at a distance. A flexible anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) microcantilever and a high-power quantum cascade laser utilized as the infrared (IR) source are used for standoff IR reflection-absorption spectroscopy to detect explosive residues on a metal surface. Standoff sensing of trinitrotoluene (TNT) is demonstrated by exploiting the high thermomechanical sensitivity of a bimetallic AAO microcantilever. Moreover, sputtering gold onto the fabricated AAO nanowells generates a strong scattering and absorption of IR light in the wavelength range of 5.18 µm to 5.85 µm resulting in enhanced nanoplasmonic heating. Utilizing the IR absorption enhancement in this wavelength range, the plasmonic AAO cantilever could detect TNT molecules 7 times better than could the bimetallic AAO cantilever.

Simultaneous Photografting of Two Organic Groups on a Gold Surface by using Arylazo Sulfones as Single Precursors.

Arylazo sulfones have been exploited as photoactivatable substrates for the simultaneous photografting of both aryl and methanesulfonyl groups on a gold surface. The obtained samples have been characterized by different spectroscopic techniques including ellipsometry and electrochemistry, infrared reflection absorption, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, XPS, and AFM. Grafting occurs through a simple N-S cleavage and not, as usually observed with aromatic precursors, by electron transfer.

Tailoring electric field standing waves in reflection–absorption infrared spectroscopy to enhance absorbance from adsorbates on ice surfaces

The spectroscopic detection of molecules adsorbed onto ice surfaces at coverages similar to those encountered under typical environmental conditions requires high surface selectivity and sensitivity that few techniques can afford. An experimental methodology allowing a significant enhancement in the absorbance from adsorbed molecules is demonstrated herein. It exploits Electric Field Standing Wave (EFSW) effects intrinsic to grazing incidence Reflection-Absorption Infrared (RAIR) spectroscopy, where film thickness dependent optical interferences occur between the multiple reflections of the IR beam at the film-vacuum and the substrate-film interfaces. In this case study, CH4 is used as a probe molecule and is deposited on a 20 ML coverage dense amorphous solid water film adsorbed onto solid Ar underlayers of various thicknesses. We observe that, at thicknesses where destructive interferences coincide with the absorption features from the CH stretching and HCH bending vibrational modes of methane, their intensity increases by a factor ranging from 10 to 25. Simulations of the RAIR spectra of the composite stratified films using a classical optics model reproduce the Ar underlayer coverage dependent enhancements of the absorbance features from CH4 adsorbed onto the ice surface. They also reveal that the enhancements occur when the square modulus of the total electric field at the film's surface reaches its minimum value. Exploiting the EFSW effect allows the limit of detection to be reduced to a coverage of (0.2 ± 0.2) ML CH4, which opens up interesting perspectives for spectroscopic studies of heterogeneous atmospheric chemistry at coverages that are more representative of those found in the natural environment.

Tracking the prelude of the electroreduction of carbon monoxide via its interaction with Cu(100): Studies by operando scanning tunneling microscopy and infrared spectroscopy

The first isolable intermediate in the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide is carbon monoxide. This species, or its hydrated form, formic acid, is also the primary end product from all but a handful of metallic electrodes; with the latter, hydrogen gas is generated, but it emanates from the reduction of water and not from CO2. Only one electrode material, zerovalent copper, can spawn, in greater-than-trace quantities, a variety of species that are more highly reduced than CO. Hence, if the aim is to pursue a reaction trail of the reduction of CO2 to products other than CO, it would be both logical and expedient to track the electrocatalytic reaction of CO itself. Heterogeneous electrocatalysis is a surface phenomenon; it transpires only when the reactant, CO in this case, chemisorbs on, or chemically interacts with, the Cu electrode surface. There is no electrocatalytic reaction if there is no CO adsorption. In ultrahigh vacuum, no CO resides on the Cu(100) surface at temperatures higher than 200 K. However, under electrochemical conditions, CO is chemisorbed on Cu at ambient temperatures at a given potential. We thus paired, in seriatim fashion, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and polarization-modulation IR reflection-absorption spectroscopy (PMIRS) to document the influence of applied potential on the coverage, the molecular orientation, and the adlattice structure of CO adsorbed on Cu(100) in alkaline solutions; the results are described in this paper.
