Some Solutions to Improve Programming Skills for Information Technology Students at Tan Trao University

In the rapidly evolving field of Information Technology, proficient programming skills are paramount for students aspiring to excel in their careers. This study investigates the current state of programming competencies among IT students at Tan Trao University, identifies the challenges they face, and proposes targeted solutions to enhance their programming capabilities. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, we gathered data through surveys, interviews, and performance assessments, revealing significant gaps in foundational knowledge, practical application, and problem-solving skills. Based on these findings, we recommend a multifaceted strategy that includes curriculum enhancement, hands-on coding workshops, peer mentoring programs, and the integration of industry-relevant projects. These solutions aim to create a robust learning environment that not only improves technical skills but also fosters critical thinking and collaboration. The implementation of these strategies is expected to significantly elevate the programming proficiency of IT students at Tan Trao University, preparing them to meet the demands of the tech industry and contribute innovatively to their future workplaces. This research underscores the urgent need for educational institutions to adapt and evolve their teaching methodologies to cultivate the next generation of skilled programmers.

Didactic digital tools and autonomous learning in information technology engineering students at Uleam, Chone Extension

The technological scenario has transformed the way people communicate, learn and carry out daily activities. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been proven that technology has provided many advantages, but challenges related to access and security have also been generated, making it essential to guarantee that all people have the same opportunities related to scientific access. The objective was to evaluate the use of digital didactic tools in the autonomous learning of information technology engineering students of the ULEAM Chone extension, the study was descriptive with the quantitative approach, the inductive-deductive method was applied, the review of information and the statistical method. Among the instruments used in the work, a structured survey was used for the 16 teachers and information technology students with a total population of 193 students, applying the Larry and Murray formula with a sample of 89 schoolchildren. It is concluded that digital tools offer advantages in autonomous learning such as time optimization, in addition to allowing the analysis of various investigative approaches, even though there are factors that affect the educational field for the application of digital tools such as social, cultural, political and economic.

Designing a Competency-Focused Course on Applied AI Based on Advanced System Research on Business Requirements

The consortium of “The Future is in Applied Artificial Intelligence” Project designed the first competency-based applied artificial intelligence curriculum at the higher-education institution level. The development was based on advanced system research on existing artificial intelligence-related resources and surveying target groups of teachers, information technology students, and employers, which should enhance the performance of implementing artificial intelligence education. A review of applied artificial intelligence was prepared in the form of keyword clustering. The initial data were collected with the help of surveying by identifying job offers, existing artificial intelligence training courses, scientific projects, and real cases. A synthetic analysis of the textual information from the studies was conducted using the word clouds technique. A tensor-based approach was used for the presentation of the competency-based course. The specific numerical requirements for the course in the form of priorities followed from the solution to decision-making problems using the analytic hierarchy process technique. Based on a comprehensive study of surveys, educational experience, scientific projects, and business requirements, and a meta-analysis of the recent references, we specified the criteria for a training course in the form of a tensor-based representation of competencies in relation to content and educational modules.

Mastering the art of technical writing in it: Making complex things easy to understand in Atate campus

This research, conducted at the Atate Campus of Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology, delves into the realm of technical writing within the Information Technology (IT) sector, focusing on the pedagogical strategies that facilitate the comprehension of complex technical topics by IT students. It seeks to uncover the challenges IT students face when engaging with technical documentation and the effective methods to surmount these obstacles. Through a qualitative and quantitative analysis involving a survey distributed to 100 IT students across various academic years, the study identifies significant challenges such as conceptual complexity, jargon prevalence, and the need for audience-tailored documentation. The research highlights best practices like the use of plain language, visuals, real-world examples, and the critical role of user testing in enhancing document clarity and understandability. Furthermore, it examines preferences in writing styles and document structures, offering insights into effective technical communication tailored to diverse audience needs. This study proposes a set of recommendations aimed at improving technical writing curriculum and pedagogy, encouraging future research, and fostering a deeper understanding of technical subjects among IT students through enhanced technical writing skills.

Evaluation of the Usability of Drmyco Web Application Using the Think-Aloud Method

Introduction: Health information technology has great potential to address some of the challenges of developed and developing countries in providing accessible, affordable and high-quality healthcare services. Telemedicine uses health information technology to overcome geographic barriers and increase access to health care services. This is particularly useful for rural and disadvantaged communities in developing countries. There are many reasons for abandoning and failing the web application; one of the most important obstacles to their use is low applicability. The purpose of this study is to investigate the usability of Drmyco web application.Material and Methods: Evaluation was done in a laboratory environment based on a pre-prepared scenario using the think-aloud method by 15 users (health information technology students from all over the country). Then the identified problems and identified problems were classified based on the Van den Haak method. The Nielsen method was used to evaluate the severity of the problems.Results: The average duration of the evaluation process in this study for users was 22.06 minutes. The total number of problems identified by users was 19.Conclusion: The two principles of Layout and Comprehensiveness were identified as the most problems for users.

Students online learning experience during emergency remote teaching in higher education

For actionable insight, this study explored computer science and information technology students’ online learning experience in an emergency remote teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic in a public technical university in Ghana. A mixed method research of both quantitative and qualitative design was used to expand the evidence base. The inherent set of factors of the learning experience were determined by an exploratory factor analysis and confirmed with a multiple regression. Six factors comprising sense of concern, institutional support, effective communication, connectedness, mediated technologies, and stress levels explained 66.5% of the variance in the patterns of relationship. All factors had positive regression weights and added significantly to the prediction. Potentials identified comprised positive reactions to institutional support, improved lecturer-student interaction, active participation, accessible course contents, and moderately high future online learning expectations. The challenges included unpreparedness, unreliable Internet, high cost of data, and incidental learning design and pedagogy. Evidently, the higher education landscape shifted during the pandemic in obvious ways to merit further studies and reflective online learning administration to inform robust technology-oriented post-pandemic practices.

Effectiveness of Poster Presentation Method for Vocabulary Enhancement of International Information Technology University Students

This paper investigates the impact of employing poster-making activities on the vocabulary proficiency of intermediate-level International Information Technology Students. The study focuses on a sample of four groups, each comprising 15 students, randomly assigned to either the treatment or control condition. The treatment group engages in structured poster-making exercises centered around IT-related terminology, while the control group receives conventional vocabulary instruction through traditional methods. Pre- and post-assessments, consisting of standardized vocabulary tests, will be administered to all four groups to measure vocabulary acquisition. Statistical analysis will be employed to compare the pre- and post-test scores between the treatment and control groups, while controlling for any initial differences in vocabulary proficiency. This article strictly adheres to a quantitative methodology, focusing on objective measurements of vocabulary gains. The study aims to provide empirical evidence regarding the effectiveness of poster-making activities as a supplementary tool for vocabulary enhancement in the context of Information Technology education. The findings of this study will contribute to the growing body of literature on innovative language learning strategies tailored to specialized fields like information technology. Additionally, the results will offer practical insights for educators and curriculum developers seeking evidence-based approaches to address the unique language learning needs of students in technical disciplines.

Interactive teaching methods have been receiving attention in application to innovate teaching methods in education and training, especially in training human resources in technical fields. With the participation of computers and supporting software, along with other means, the interaction process between teacher - learner - environment increasingly plays an important role in forming knowledge and skills for learners. For the University of Information and Communication Technology, Thai Nguyen University, Thai Nguyen University, interactive teaching methods are applied in training Information Technology students flexibly in each subject to improve education quality. Through survey methods and other research methods, the article analyses the actual conditions for applying interactive teaching methods in Programming Engineering course for students of the Faculty of Information Technology, University of Information and Communication Technology, Thai Nguyen University, from which the limitations will be evaluated. On that basis, the article offers some measures to improve the effectiveness of applying interactive teaching methods in Programming Engineering for students.

Empowering Chronic Kidney Disease Patients: A Personalized Electronic Health Record System for Enhanced Care and Management

Introduction: Electronic health records are critical for diagnosis and treatment, but their development can be challenging and time-consuming process. Personal health records provide a practical and accessible solution by empowering patients to take an active role in their care. This study presents a personalized electronic health record system for chronic kidney disease patients, highlighting its potential benefits on patient care.Material and Methods: In 2021, a practical study was conducted to develop and evaluate a personal health records software specifically for patients with chronic kidney disease. The analysis phase involved a literature review and validation process to review the dataset and key software functions. The study primarily focuses on the implementation process and exploratory usability evaluation results of the software. The development and evaluation process involved a health information management specialist and a medical informatics expert, and the software was evaluated by health information technology students using the Nielsen usability evaluation checklist.Results: In the evaluation of the produced software, 12 issues were identified, of which three were related to the principle of user freedom and mastery over the system, three were related to the principle of consistency and standards, one was related to the principle of aiding users in diagnosis, and five were related to error prevention.Conclusion: This study emphasizes the importance of compliance with clinical standards and user experience in developing successful personal health record software. Previous failures in similar systems have been attributed to non-compliance and unmet user expectations. The study aims to identify obstacles and improve the personal health records production process.

Through statistical analysis and qualitative interviews, the study unveils unique insights into the interconnected effects of these factors on IT career pursuits. The findings bear significance for educators, career counselors, policymakers, and industry stakeholders. By understanding the multifaceted elements shaping academic performance and career decisions, institutions can tailor support programs, refine curricula, and nurture holistic student development. Employers stand to gain insights into the attributes of high-performing individuals, aiding talent management and recruitment. Information Technology Students’ Insights from Their On-The-Job Training: Input to an Internship Manual

This quantitative research utilizing the descriptive-survey design assessed the on-the-job training performance of the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) students. Ninety-four students have completed their on-the-job training in school year 2017-2018 and have participated in the study. The data were collected using a survey questionnaire and descriptively treated using frequency, percentage, and weighted mean. In addition, the qualitative part of the post-evaluation survey form was treated using thematic analysis. The study revealed the following: the partner-company organization is related to the student’s specialization as they utilized IT-based software and assigned tasks related to information technology. Student trainees were able to develop their communication skills while mobile application development skills were identified as the least. OJT students also identified Professional Ethics and Values Education for IT, Multimedia Systems, Operating Systems as well as Oral Communication, Fundamentals of Grammar, and Presentation Skills and Technical Writing as the most relevant subject courses; and they perceived doing work not related to information technology, extended OJT, overtime, and certain provision of existing manual as problems. The researchers concluded that the BSIT Internship manual when implemented can effectively improve their field work performance

Utilizing gamification to promote pro-sustainable behavior among information technology students

AbstractHigher education institutions (HEIs) have made substantial strides towards incorporating sustainability into their curricula. However, the methodology of education for sustainable development (ESD) needs to be more performance-oriented and grounded in practical experience in order to foster behavioral changes towards environmental protection. The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of a gamification-driven strategy in encouraging students of information technology (IT) to adopt sustainable practices. The data was gathered from the digital records and survey responses of 75 information technology (IT) students as a component of their English language course. The results of the study suggested that the gamified method successfully encouraged students to adopt sustainable practices in their personal lives and future workplaces. The students' viewpoints regarding the accountability of individual employers and citizens for the well-being of our planet underwent a substantial transformation in support of sustainable development. The method described is applicable to various academic fields, including the humanities, sciences, medical studies, and others.

THE ROLE AND CHALLENGES OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION

This paper examines the increasing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in information technology (IT) higher education and the key opportunities and challenges associated with its adoption. A review of 75-100 research studies published during 2016-2022 and industry perspectives reveals AI’s effectiveness in improving learning outcomes through personalized, adaptive systems. However, integrating AI also poses risks regarding transparency, accountability, automation, biases, accessibility, and ethical impacts. Faculty perceptions, technology readiness, curriculum reform needs, and policy implications are analyzed under a conceptual framework integrating technology adoption and AI ethics theories. Qualitative methodology entails literature analysis to highlight AI’s advantages in optimizing human teaching efforts while weighing concerns around dehumanization, data privacy, and disempowerment. Balanced policies and practices focused on developing students’ AI competencies alongside critical thinking abilities are recommended to harness AI’s potential equitably and ethically. Deliberate efforts are needed to engineer inclusion into AI systems and uphold transparency in automated decision-making. The study informs strategies for readying IT students to responsibly apply AI tools to augment human capabilities.

Factors Affecting Computer System Maintenance Skills Improvement of Information Technology Students

The purpose of this study was to identify the variables that may influence how well students at particular Chinese computer schools are able to maintain their computer systems. It also looked into the types of technology-related leadership behaviors program administrators demonstrated how those behaviors affected and possibly even predicted the various ways that technology was used in schools. Based on the findings, it was determined that the factors that can affect the improvement of information technology students' skills in computer system maintenance were not significantly influenced by time management, test preparation, or reading in terms of sex, monthly family income, or academic performance.

Decoding Success: Assessing the Online Pseudocode Interpreter through Users Insights

Pseudocode is vital in enhancing programming comprehension, making it an essential component of the Programming Logic Formulation (CS1) course. However, many CS1 students from various senior high school strands struggle with this concept, highlighting the need for additional learning resources. This research evaluated a pseudocode interpreter designed for first-year Information and Communications Technology (ICT) students at Iloilo Science and Technology University in Iloilo City, Philippines. Using random sampling, 147 first-year ICT students were selected to evaluate the software's user experience in usability, credibility, appearance, and loyalty using the Standardized User Experience Percentile Rank Questionnaire (SUPR-Q). Likewise, five ICT experts were selected using purposive sampling to evaluate the system's validity as instructional material based on its content and on the material's organization, form, and style using the university's Quality Form for Instructional Materials (IM). The user experience evaluation yielded positive results, with students unanimously agreeing on the software's ease of use, dependability, and user-friendliness. The expert evaluation confirmed the system's validity as instructional material, commending its content, organization, form, and style. These findings suggest that the pseudocode interpreter provides immediate benefits for students, offering a valuable learning tool. Moreover, the software has the potential to be adopted by other faculty members, promoting a more efficient and captivating learning experience. Future research could investigate how interpreters affect student learning and their usefulness in various educational settings.

Student Perception of Teaching and Learning Based on M-Learning Regarding Student Interest and Motivation in the Sub-Topic of Encryption

This study aims to survey students' perceptions of application-based teaching and learning in the subtopic of Encryption for the DFT 20083 Security Basic and IT Professional course. This study was conducted on 50 Diploma in Information Technology (Digital Technology) students at Seberang Perai Polytechnic. The sampling technique used is the stratified cluster random sampling technique. The instrument used in this study is a questionnaire that uses a Likert scale. The results of the pilot study show that the instrument used has a very high reliability value of 0.952. The study data were analyzed to obtain the mean, standard deviation, frequency and percentage. Descriptive analysis of the perception of students' interest and motivation towards teaching and learning based on m-learning in the Basic Security and Professional IT course is at a high level with a mean value of 3.60 for interest and 3.53 for motivation. This finding shows that teaching and learning based on m-learning in the Encryption sub-topic for the DFT 20083 Security Basic and IT Professional course has a positive impact on students. In conclusion, learning based on m-learning revealed to students can create a fun atmosphere in learning DFT 20083 Security Basic and IT Professional courses and can improve learning skills among students.

SHARING SESSION SUASANA AKADEMIK DI LUAR NEGERI BAGI MAHASISWA TEKNOLOGI INFORMASI UNTUK MENINGKATKAN MOTIVASI BERINOVASI

The Information Technology Study Program, Faculty of Computer Science, Amikom University, Purwokerto, has grown in terms of the number of students, but requires accreditation by the Ministry of Education and Culture. Active involvement of students in various activities is a key factor in achieving good accreditation results. However, some students were not involved in extracurricular activities, which limits their knowledge, skills, social networks, and interpersonal skills. Lack of motivation, interest, and opportunities to innovate were identified problems. A program was proposed to address two problems facing Purwokerto University Amikom Information Technology students: lack of motivation to seek additional experience and engage in innovation, and underutilization of PkM activities and study center programs. The proposed solution was in the form of a sharing session about studying abroad, where students will learn about the IT student atmosphere at Amikom Purwokerto and gain motivation to innovate. This program involved a partnership with the Malaysian Technical University Melaka, where Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmad Naim Che Pee as resource person and guide. The results of the activities carried out showed that student motivation increased to be more innovative, for lecturers to make students aware that they would involve students in research activities and community service, as well as for study centers to manage programs that inspired students to develop innovation.

J48-Based Decision Tree Algorithm in Detecting Kolb’s Learning Style Preferences of Information Technology Students

Teacher education institutions developed interventions to augment both the Teacher’s teaching and the Learner’s learning process. Previous studies focused on detecting learning styles in e-learning using learning management systems and adaptive learning in the online learning process, specifically using the Felder-Silverman learning style model. On the contrary, this study aimed to develop a decision tree-based model to detect the Learner’s learning style inspired by Kolb’s learning style in a face-to-face learning environment. Knowledge discovery in databases through data mining was utilized using the J48 algorithm to develop a decision tree-based model. This study was participated by 408 out of 462 information technology students in a state university in the Philippines. The study’s result was able to develop four J48-based decision trees with conditional rule models for activist, reflector, theorist and pragmatist learners. The evaluation of the decision tree models using confusion matrix and receiver operating curve showed a very high accuracy detection of every learning style (weighted average of 88-96%). This result recommends applying this in an actual system or computer application for easy and fast learning style detection based on the characteristics of the learners.

Conceptualising the enhancement of professional skills and competencies in information technology students in higher education

In a constantly evolving industry like IT, one cannot expect things to remain the same in a few years, and the biggest concern in the context of Industry 5.0 is whether technology will replace employment (ISCAN, 2021). Even as IT professionals, every graduate will ask the same question when they enter the industry. The competency development of IT graduates has been discussed and understood as a necessity in many studies (Alavi et al., 2021; Anicic & Buselic, 2021) and a review of job advertisements online shows the changing nature of required competencies. The emphasis is not only on technical knowledge but also on various skills and competencies of the individual (Mariani et al., 2021). However, industry professionals often state they feel that IT graduates lack professional preparation in terms of skills and competencies (Guneri Sahin & Celikkan, 2020; World Economic Forum, 2023). IT teaches students how to utilize, protect, manage, and trade technology to meet needs and enhance people's lives (ACM, 2018); as a result, IT practitioners' skills and competencies are more important than ever today. What is required now may differ significantly from what is required in the future (Gartner, 2022; World Economic Forum, 2019). Therefore, future graduates must be adaptable, and the skills and competencies they acquire must be dynamic and responsive to change. There is a relationship between skill development and pedagogical methods (Virtanen & Tynjälä, 2018). It is increasingly important to link students with industry and allow them to interact in real-life circumstances. Signature Pedagogies (Shulman, 1998), WIL (Lesley et al., 2010), and authentic learning (Herrington & Herrington, 2006) are just a few of the ways that link students to their profession. Group projects, presentations, internships, portfolios, discussions, flipped classrooms, peer review, research, case studies, authentic assessments, and gamification are some of the methods used in classrooms to teach skills such as interpersonal skills, teamwork, ethics, professional responsibility, equity, personal growth, and critical thinking. It is important to investigate whether these methods are the most suitable for developing these dynamic competencies. This research aims to explore the experiences of IT graduates and lecturers with the pedagogical methods utilized, and to investigate how effective they are in developing dynamic professional skills and competencies. The poster presents the proposal for this study. A case study method has been selected as it allows for an investigation of contemporary phenomena in depth within their real-world context (Yin, 2014). A single case (holistic) design was chosen to investigate how teaching, learning, and assessment methods can be used in IT higher education to develop IT professional skills and competencies which are required by industry. Even though the study will take place in a single setting, diverse participants with diverse experiences will be involved in data collection. This will inform the higher education sector about industry expectations and methods for developing these dynamic skills and competencies. Furthermore, it will help students understand the value of professional skills for employability, and the function of teaching, learning, and assessment methods in their educational pathways.
