Covid-19 Recovery and Growth: Promoting Technology Innovation in Healthcare Sector on Hygiene and Safe Medication Practices in Low-Resourced Nigerian Societies

IntroductionGlobally, the healthcare sector is primarily designated to provide timely, efficient and effective medical services. In African countries like Nigeria, the inequality in the healthcare sector is worsened by the limited coverage of healthcare delivery. This has evolved to an unprecedented effect on the provision of healthcare services in low-resource societies. In the post COVID-19 era, recovery and growth from the pandemic become more demanding with an emphasis on promoting innovative technology in the healthcare sector on hygiene and safe medication practices. MethodData was sourced from mixed research method. Questionnaires, focus group discussions, and in-depth interviews were used to deduce data from 142 healthcare providers, users, and social workers. Participants were randomly selected from three healthcare institutions in Nsukka, Enugu state. ResultFindings revealed that although greater positive perception (66.7%) holds on promoting innovative technology in the healthcare sector; concerns on negative perceptions (33.3%) were; the choice of medication, cultural health behavior and non-adherence to health guidelines. Major factors militating against innovative technology in healthcare sector were corruption in healthcare system, patients’ economic level and poor healthcare delivery. Findings depict that age (χ²cal= 84.0, p=0.000<0.05) and income (χ²cal= 53.7, p=0.000<0.05) of patients were found to be significant in the utilization of innovative technology in healthcare. Evidence-based interventions on innovative healthcare systems on hygiene and safe medication practices were; intensive community health education at the grass-root, implementation of health policies, and tutors’ improved healthcare knowledge. Participants showed little knowledge of social workers’ engagement in health institutions. ConclusionEquity in healthcare is a core concern in Sustainable Development Goals. Achieving equal distribution of health services between urban and rural societies in recovery from covid-19 pandemic and growth of the healthcare sector is pegged on promoting innovative technology in hygiene and safe medication practices. The study recommends that social workers’ engagement with health providers and users in low-resourced societies could help propagate awareness and self-care management of health challenges through digital information technology in Nigeria.

Basic Skills and Competences of Higher National Diploma Computer Science Graduates: An Analysis of Stakeholders Views

This study was motivated by the general opinion or statements from the public and specifically from professional bodies and industries in the country suggesting that tertiary curricula currently being implemented by academic institutions in Nigeria do not provide what is needed by the industry or labour employer. The main objective of the study is to identify skill and competency gaps in the training of Higher National Diploma graduates of computer science or information technology in Nigeria and to provide recommendations on how the identified gaps could be address in the training curriculum. A three-round Delphi questionnaire where the respondents were asked to rate the items on the scale of their importance was used for the study. The results suggest that, there was significant difference in the views of academic and industry participants in the ranking of the skill and competency attributes based on the scale of preference. The current curriculum also aligned with the needs of the industry in terms of the generic skills. The study among others, recommend two generic skills (21 and 25) considered to be of importance by the industry participants be given serious consideration during review of curriculum to improve the employability of the graduates. The application of forensics examination in crime-related prosecution

The increased use of the internet and information technology in Nigeria has led to the need to utilize technologies to identify and prosecute perpetrators of crimes. In today’s world, the application of forensics in the investigation and prosecution of crimes is essential. This paper critically examines the effect of the absence of a coordinated standard for the execution and presentation of forensic investigations utilizing electronic evidence in Nigeria. It examines the nature and scope of the various forensic models proposed, while questioning the appropriateness or otherwise of their usefulness in criminal prosecutions. The paper suggests the need for the regulation of forensics practices, the provision of standards, and a universal model for the successful prosecution of crimes in Nigeria.&#x0D; Index words: Nigeria; forensic examination; digital crime; standardization

The Role of Social Media in Empowering the Involvement of Women in Information Technology: A Case Study of Al-Qalam and Umaru Musa Yar’adua Universities

The under-representation of the women in the field of Information Technology (IT) in Nigeria has been closely observed over the last decade. One of the facts is that social media have been widely and intensively used in Nigeria, which is an effective way to empower women in the IT sector. This study aimed to investigate the role of social media in empowering the involvement of women in information technology. In order to achieve the objectives of this study the current study conducted a survey amongst the female students of Al-Qalam and Umaru Musa Yar’adua Universities and tried to find out how the use of social media is contributing to the growth of women involvement in the IT sector. For this purpose, a sample of 200 female students was taken from these Universities via convenience sampling techniques. The quantitative method was used to collect data for this study. The findings in this study revealed that there was a significant relationship between women’s awareness and the encouragement of women in the IT sector through the use of the social media. Besides, there was a significant relationship between the empowerment of women and the encouragement of women in the IT sector through the use of the social media. Hence, women’s awareness and empowerment of women through the social media encouraged the involvement of women in the IT sector. In addition, this study recommends that there is need to examine the relationship between women and social media in various sectors such as government, healthcare, aerospace and security in order to trace the real role of social media in empowering the involvement of women in information technology in Nigeria.

Impact Analysis of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in Project Evaluation and Management in Nigeria

Project management is believed to be justified as a means of avoiding the ills inherent in the construction sector of the economy and for which reasons most projects fail and or abandoned. This study is aimed at assessing the role of information communication technology (ICT) in the area of project evaluation and management and to emphasize the importance of information communication technology in the area of project evaluation. The hypothesis of this study is that there is no significant relationship between Information Communication Technology (ICT) and Project Evaluation and Management. It also presents a historical development of telecommunications starting from Lanlate I Satellite Earth Station which was Nigeria’s first international satellite telecommunications gateway to the outside world. An overview of the general level of development of information technology in Nigeria is also highlighted and it also examines the extent to which it is being used in support of information delivery and communication in science and technology. The importance of information technology devices to the general development of national economy and educational advancement is also discussed. This paper also emphasizes that for the survival and relevance of higher education institutions in Nigeria, ICT should be declared an institutional priority with adequate funding and support. It is finally concluded that the tremendous advancement in computer technology, software engineering and Telecommunications as well as the resultant radical changes and advances in the techniques of data and information processing, storage, retrieval and dissemination in Nigerian construction companies within a decade is, no doubt, a revolution.

Predictors of Work-Family Role Conflict and Its Impact on Professional Women in Medicine, Engineering, and Information Technology in Nigeria.

This study examines work-family role conflict and the factors predicting it, with a sample of 173 professional women in engineering and information technology (IT) firms, including 2 hospitals-1 public and 1 private. Our findings show no significant difference in the level of work-family role conflict encountered by women across medicine, engineering, and IT, whereas hours of work, family responsibilities, job demand, and work role overload were significantly correlated with work-family role conflict. Multiple linear regression analysis indicates that only work role overload, family responsibilities, and hours of work significantly predicted 45.9% of work-family role conflict. This implies that working women are burdened by work demands, which invariably affects the work-family role conflict they experience and leads to deterioration of their occupational health. It is suggested that employers should create a flexible work schedule and establish family-friendly policies in the workplace to promote a healthy work-life balance for women in science careers.

Health Information Technology in Nigeria: Stakeholders’ Perspectives of Nationwide Implementations and Meaningful Use of the Emerging Technology in the Most Populous Black Nation

Background: Nigeria is witnessing continuing advocacy and increase in number of individuals yearning for computerization of health information and healthcare processes. On the other hand, the Government of this most populous black nation is evolving plans and strategies for the adoption and implementation of health information technology (HIT). However, little is known about opinions of the diverse healthcare providers who would act the script of government in ensuring meaningful use of HIT in the country. Objective: This nationwide, cross-sectional study attempted to determine stakeholders’ perspectives of the emerging HIT in Nigeria. Result: HIT stakeholders who gave consent (n=233) at the two conferences participated in the study, 76% of whom were male professionals, mostly (117, 50.2%) from tertiary healthcare institutions. It worthy of note that three of the participants came from United States of America to attend the 1st National Conference on Health Information Technology in Nigeria. Of all participants, the majority (226, 99.1%) opined that HIT will improve communication among healthcare providers. A similar portion (223, 98.2%) were of the opinion that HIT will facilitate prompt retrieval of patient’s health records on point-of-care (POC). Nearly two-third (139, 62.6%) were optimistic of possible realization of nationwide implementations of HIT in the country by the year 2020. The results also indicate that gender, professional inclination, and place of work were important predictors of positive opinion of HIT. The three factors were associated with stakeholders’ opinion that the evolving HIT is capable of improving medical care quality (p=0.059; 0.000; 0.014) of the Nigerian populace. Most stakeholders (61%) recommended that the paper-based health records should be archived post implementation of HIT. Conclusion: The Nigerian healthcare system is manned by providers and stakeholders who are quite abreast of the benefits of health information technology and are willing to embrace the technology in their workflow. This is quite reassuring and tends to prompt the healthcare decision makers to proactively formulate policies and introduce interventions to encourage nationwide acceptance of the emerging technology. Nonetheless, there is more to be done on appropriate clinical documentation in order to set a friendly pedestal for effective takeoff, successful implementations and meaningful use. Appropriate funding and financial incentives for quality improvement is recommended. In addition, the National Conference on HIT should be convened annually and a technical committee be set up to appraise future implementations.

Nigeria And Ethical Concerns In Information Technology

The focus of this study is to expose various ethical problems in Information Technology (IT). It is an in-depth desk research aimed at extending the frontiers of knowledge in Information Technology. Most end-users of IT in Nigeria are not aware of some ethical questions underlining the creation and application of IT devices. As a result, manufacturers, end-users and the populace, perpetrate unethical behaviours against or with the use of Information Technology. It was unraveled that unethical attitudes bedevil the Information Technology industry. Such ethical issues include computer criminals, environmental pollution, electromagnetic emissions, data security and privacy, intellectual property rights, among others. This paper concludes that the violation of ethical values in IT has resulted to health hazards and loss of property of end-users of IT devices in Nigeria. It recommends the provision of techniques, devices and human resources to forestall various unethical behavioural tendencies as they affect end-users, producers and merchandisers of Information Technology in Nigeria.
