Landscape Mapping: Investigating the Scope of Information Systems and Technology in Contemporary Organizations

Through a systematic examination, this study seeks to shed light on the intricate relationships between technology and organizational functionality, offering insights into IST deployment, utilization, and management strategies. By employing bibliometric analysis, thematic mapping, and author collaboration network analysis, this research provides a comprehensive understanding of IST research dynamics, trends, and future directions. The findings not only contribute to scholarly discourse but also offer practical implications for organizational stakeholders, policymakers, and technology practitioners.

Robotic process automation and artificial intelligence capabilities driving digital strategy: a resource-based view

PurposeResearch of currently limited literature sees Robotic Process Automation (RPA) as an important tool at the tactical level. However, the literature has not considered its potential contribution to creating competitive advantages. This paper aims to link RPA and Resource-based view (RBV) literature, proposing a conceptual framework boosting RPA research as part of an organizational AI strategy.Design/methodology/approach This study applied a Systematic Literature Review (SRL), combining bibliometrics and content analysis. This study also built a new framework based on the updated RBV model that was transformed based on the RPA literature review results.Findings By bridging the two bodies of literature on RBV and RPA, this study manages to show the strategic side of the technology. Therefore, this study brought to light the most updated fundamental concepts of complementarity and scale-free fungible resources from RBV theory and AI technologies, applied to the domains of RPA, information systems and information technology (IS/IT) through the development of a new theoretical lens. Also, this study was able to elaborate on a new conceptual framework for AI strategy formulation to help organizations on their journey to AI utilization.Originality/value The authors did not find any research that has shown the strategic side of RPA, nor any that has used a theoretical lens based on the RBV theory to show this side. To the best of the author’s knowledge, this study seems to be the first to make the case for RPA's strategic potential.

Perception of e-wallets as the mode of payment for online enrollment in Marinduque State College

The advancement of finance and technology in what is commonly referred to as Fintech has introduced an opportunity for many business models in the new normal which provides ease of conducting money-related transactions amongst consumers, retailers, suppliers, and society as a whole. One of the most commonly used FinTech is the electronic wallets (e-wallets); a cashless electronic payment system. E-wallets provide the user the services and access to accomplish financial transactions and digital payments quickly that only require the application of smartphones and Internet connectivity. However, there are many perceptions about the application of e-wallets, particularly in e-money-related transactions such as in school enrolment, and would still prefer the use of money in physical form. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze the perceptions among the students from Marinduque State College that contributes to the use of e-wallet as the mode of payment for school enrolment and transactions through the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) using Perceived Ease of Use (PEU), Perceived Usefulness (PU) Perceived Convenience (PC), Willingness (W) and Behavioral Intention (BI) as the main variables. To reach the objective, a sample size of at least 267 respondents was identified. The questionnaires were sent to 600 students to accommodate possible non-response which are students from the Institute of Information Systems and Technology (IIST) Marinduque State College, and a quantitative approach was applied to examine and test the hypothesis. The study finding shows that Perceived Usefulness (PU) and Willingness (W) have a positive significant effect on the Behavioral Intention (BI) to use an e-wallet as the mode of payment. In contrast, Perceived Convenience (PC) and Perceived Ease of Use (PEU) have no positive significant effect on the Behavioral Intention (BI) to use an e-wallet.

Perencanaan Strategis Sistem Informasi pada Rumah Batik Anto Djamil Menggunakan Metode Ward and Peppard

Batik is a work of art that takes a long time to make. The steps of making batik start from the stage of pouring ideas, making sketches, the design process, drawing patterns, the canting process, coloring, melorod, and finally the finishing stage so that it becomes a batik cloth. One example of a batik company that exists, especially in Sokaraja, Banyumas Regency is Rumah Batik Anto Djamil. Rumah Batik Anto Djamil has obstacles in its business processes, the obstacles are Information Systems and Information Technology (IS/IT) that have not been used optimally and IS/IT that have not been integrated with each other. Efforts to overcome the obstacles that exist within the company, an IS/IT strategic plan is needed that is right on target, which is based on the current situation in the company. The purpose of making an IS/IT strategic plan itself is to integrate business operational objectives with IS/IT strategic objectives in the company. The ward and peppard method is used in IS/IT strategic planning to manage obstacles that can hinder the company's operations because ward and peppard focuses on business needs within the company and has clear and precise strategic steps. McFarlan Strategy Grid, Value Chain, PEST, and SWOT analysis are analyzes that will later be used for IS/IT strategic planning in this research. IS/IT strategic planning document is the result of this research. This research also produces a portfolio application for Rumah Batik Anto Djamil within the next five years which will facilitate the business and production processes at the Rumah Batik Anto Djamil

The Concept of Modularity in the Context of IS/IT Project Outsourcing

Information systems and information technology (IS/IT) services are often outsourced to external partners for multiple reasons. The outsourcing literature is persistently reporting high failure rates in IS/IT project outsourcing. Literature suggests that the IS/IT project outsourcing is a complex maneuver, but unfortunately, none of the proposed remedies (mitigating actions) have considered addressing the complexity related issue in IS/IT project outsourcing. This paper explores the concept of modularity, as it has been applied in many other fields in order to manage complexity and enhance agility/flexibility. This paper presents a case study conducted at a Belgian organization involved in technology services and is part of a research project consisting of four cases. This study illustrates a systematic approach, how the concept of modularity can be applied in identifying ‘couplings' which may be responsible for increasing complexity to IS/IT project outsourcing. This study is a first attempt to gain insight into this phenomenon.

Persuasion of tacit knowledge in teaching information technology and information systems

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine information technology and information systems (IT/IS) technology teaching and learning (T&L) as affected by three key factors of tacit knowledge (TK). These factors are the de-contextualization, the faculty and students’ mental model gap and the intrinsic inability of faculty to teach what they know (i.e. the know-how-know what gap).Design/methodology/approachThe approach is based on intensive literature review and synthesis of Nonaka’s socialization, externalization, combination and internalization model and other relevant knowledge management (KM) principles applied to understand the effects of mobilization and nurturing of TK in pedagogical activities and strategies.FindingsThis paper demonstrated a holistic view of the role of TK in teaching IT/IS through deep learning activities. It differentiates between faculty and student mental models and the ability of the faculty to convey real-world know-how to students.Research limitations/implicationsThis study is by no means comprehensive in exploring the TK contextual dimensions of IT/IS T&L milieus. However, some of the assumptions and factors in this paper are not pertinent to some pedagogical environments.Practical implicationsThe activities in this paper introduced new propositions on IT/IS teaching by focusing on TK concepts in light of its challenges. The study could be used by institutes to place emphasis on accommodating TK within effective IT/IS T&L activities.Originality/valueDrawing on the KM literature and experience, this paper offers new insight into how TK can be innovatively incorporated into a pedagogical landscape.

The Knowledge Body of Requirement Engineering in IST Innovations: An Ontological Analysis

Requirement Engineering is considered a key factor for Information Systems and Technology (IST) success in innovation. After roughly 40 years, important questions about the impact of RE in innovations remains. Literature review and bibliometric reports are well-known techniques for describing the state of the art; however, both can cover what has been done, but fail to identify the less developed areas. An alternative method is used to describe the whole knowledge body of RE (KBoRE) for IST innovations, and then systematically identify the most, less and uncovered areas. This paper proposes an Ontological framework of the KBoRE for IST innovations, by decomposing it through the identification of taxonomies and concepts that represent the field. Then, we apply the ontology to map articles from SCOPUS and WoS databases. Results reveal emphases that help to design research agendas and feed the KBoRE for IST Innovations to fill the gaps between the academic curiosity and the industry progress.

The Challenges of the IS/IT Projects in the Healthcare Sector

Essentially, the purpose of investment in information systems and information technology (IS/IT) is to improve the operational efficiency of the organizations, reducing costs and improving levels of quality. Thus, many traditional appraisal techniques are used to evaluate tangible benefits, which are based on direct project costs. Since the 1980s, IS/IT has positioned itself as a strategic tool that through flexibility and innovative ways can produce superior performance. The health sector has sought to improve its effectiveness and efficiency by adopting IS/IT solutions to increase the quality of services, namely patient safety, organizational efficiency, and end-user satisfaction. Hospitals are complex organizations, and this complexity magnifies the opportunity for inevitable human errors. A poorly integrated system can decrease operational efficiency and reduce the quality of healthcare services. The issue remains controversial, as evidenced by several articles. The authors noticed that emergent technologies may offer opportunities to those who can exploit them effectively.

Investments in E-Government

The expenses in Information Systems and Information Technology (IS/IT) represent a substantial share in organizations' budgets. However, IS/IT investment projects seem to continue to show reduced success rates. The Benefits Management (BM) has gained relevance as a way, not only, to understand these failures, but also as a tool available to organizations to improve the success of IS/TI investments. The objective of this article is to understand how BM can be applied in IS/IT investments in the Public Administration (PA) and help to leverage the benefits of these investments. A case study was conducted using an e-Government project in the Portuguese PA. The study showed how a BM approach can be applied in this environment and also identified some difficulties that must be considered. Several benefits, that were not foreseen, were identified and evaluated, or proposed some criteria for their evaluation, highlighting, this way, the true contribution of IS/IT investments in delivering services to citizens and increasing public organizations performance.

Applying Benefits Management to the Implementation of a Copy Point

We live in a macroeconomic period which is impacted by major technological changes. Organizations continue to invest heavily in new Information Systems and Information Technology (IS/IT) as a vehicle to increase productivity and add value to their business. Investment in IS/IT is not only acquiring technology, but above all investing in change. Difficulties in justifying investments in IS/IT are often the cause for uncertainty regarding expected benefits and are often identified as being one of the most critical management issues. In the literature, it is common to find reports about IS/IT investments that failed to achieve the expected results and benefits. Benefits Management approach (BM) tries to overcome this gap through a management process cycle that enhances the potential benefits from the planned use of IS/IT. In the authors' case study, BM was applied to an IS/IT initiative that radically changed the way an internal printing process is carried out, with the added advantage of producing greater environmental and economic sustainability. This study also shows that the application of BM can contribute to increasing the degree of benefits realization and value from investments in IS/IT initiatives.

Exploring the application of the Delphi method as a forecasting tool in Information Systems and Technologies research

The Delphi method has been used widely in clarifying decision-making based on the opinions of experts in all research areas. This study focuses on Information Systems and Information Technology (IS/IT) research area. Its aim is to explore the use of the Delphi method in topics related to IS/IT as a forecasting tool. A sizeable amount of research has been examined about IS/IT using the Delphi method. This work proposes a guideline for applying the Delphi method in IS/IT studies based on a literature review of high impact IS/IT papers that apply Delphi with a view to answering forecasting questions. This guideline defines the most relevant aspects which should be considered when applying this method. Previously, the authors conducted a literature review of 2502 articles from different research topics to obtain evidence about the diffusion of the Delphi method in IS/IT compared to other areas.

Information systems and technology sourcing strategies of e-Retailers for value chain enablement

In the e-Retail industry, a well-designed IT infrastructure is essential in creating a tightly integrated value chain and delivering high quality service. With intense competition for market share and profits, information systems and technology (IST) sourcing decisions are becoming increasingly important to e-Retail firms to support continued growth and market responsiveness. Drawing on the contingency theory, we examine organizational and environmental factors that influence an e-Retailer's IST sourcing strategy of make versus buy in enabling its value chain activities, and we also look at firm-level performance impacts of IST sourcing decisions that involve bundling across value chain activities. We test the proposed model and hypotheses using a panel data set of 307 firms over the period of 2006–2010. The results show that firms that make transformative IT investments tend to source a smaller portion of IST for their e-Retail value chain activities than firms that pursue automate or informate as their strategic role for IT investment. Capabilities are positively associated with IST sourcing. Firms experienced in e-Retail are more likely to build rather than buy their IST. In addition, we find mimicking behavior for IST sourcing among firms in the same merchandizer category. We find that IT strategic role is strongly associated with growth metric, whereas sourcing decisions predominantly impact operational performance measures. There is partial evidence that alignment between IT strategic role and IST sourcing decisions results in better performance effects. Moreover, complementary IST sourcing of synergistic marketing and sales activities positively impacts Web sales and conversion rate, but the sourcing combination of logistics, operations, and sales activities is associated with lower Web sales and conversion rate.

Digital Natives and Digital Immigrants

It is presumed that Nigerian students and teachers have been unable to find effective ways to use technology in the classroom and other aspects of their teaching and learning. Yet, considerable debate remains over the most efficient techniques and procedures to measure students and faculties information technology and information systems (IT/IS) use. In most developing countries, the challenges associated with carrying out IT/IS measurements are different from those in developed countries, as are the methods for selecting appropriate IT/IS content. This study gathered data using a five item demographic variable and a fifty item questionnaire to measure student and faculty academic IT/IS use in one private and one public university in Nigeria. This study is based on the 191 responses received to the questionnaire. The results reveal significant differences between the academic use of IT/IS by students and faculty. This groundbreaking study recommends that universities become valuable and proactive actors in the provision of technology based learning, teaching and research for students and academic staff to foster an effective academic environment aimed at meeting millennium development goals (MDG) for education. This scholarly discourse has implication for researchers, education practitioners, planners, policy makers and government.

The Discussion on Mechanism and Research Framework of Green Information Technology and Information Systems Adoption

Over the last decade, an increasing number of firms are undertaking actions to reduce their environmental impact. As information technology and information systems have permeated most business activities, they offer an important opportunity to solve the environmental problems. Green information technology and information systems (ITIS) have become one of the latest considerations to reduce energy consuming of IT operation and business operation. This paper makes a definition of green IT and green IS based on the prior literature, and concludes the three aspects of green ITIS adoption motivations: regulations, competitiveness and ecological responsibility. Next, the paper explores the role of business strategy in the process of green ITIS application, which can be classified into proactive strategy and reactive strategy. Finally, the paper proposes a green ITIS adoption model including the factors of business strategy, and three aspects of green ITIS motivations under the instruction of technology-organization-environment (TOE) framework.

Information System/Information Technology Strategic Planning in Order Information Technology Development Strategy Using TOGAF (The Open Group Architecture Framework) Methodology in Achieving World Class University in Satya Wacana Christian University

Information systems and information technology (IS/IT) play an important role in supporting the organization to conduct its business processes. The research was conducted at the University of Satya Christian Wacana (SWCU). Business processes in perceived walking SWCU are not optimal in using IS/IT in the organization. The planning process/IT has not been done in all business units and SWCU does not have an Executive Information System that can help in the decision making process. The process of strategic planning of information systems and information technology using The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) has compiled a few methods of strategic planning. The results obtained by the study of the needs of IS/IT in SWCU generating application portfolio will be implemented in the institution.

Using IS/IT to enhance service delivery

PurposeThe paper aims to contribute to ongoing research which emphasises the expanding role of information systems and information technology (IS/IT) as an enhancer of service delivery.Design/methodology/approachIn order to explore the practical utilisation of IS/IT in the enhancement of service delivery, a case study was adopted as the preferred research methodology. The case focused on one of the biggest telecommunications IS/IT service providers in the UK.FindingsThe study shows that the delivery of service experiences to customers by firms operating in service provider‐intensive environments is challenged by the multi‐dimensional nature of service.Practical implicationsThe interest lies in the question of the “true” role of IS/IT in service delivery. In particular, the paper explores key thematic elements that underlie enhanced IS/IT delivery.Originality/valueExploration of the utilisation of IS/IT to enhance service delivery is framed within extant services science and service research literature.

Determinants of Information Systems and Information Technology Project Team Success: A Literature Review and a Conceptual Model

During the past years, increasingly more project managers started to recognize that human factors, in particular those related to project team success, are critical for overall project success. Hence, the scientific investigation of this topic has gained momentum. However, a review of the Information Systems and Information Technology (IST) literature on the determinants of project team success reveals that there has been limited research on this topic. Bearing this research gap in mind, it is reasonable to argue that IST theorizing can substantially benefit from new insights from other scientific disciplines in which studies on team effectiveness and project team success are already available. Therefore, the present article reviews and integrates the literature published in other disciplines in order to develop a conceptual model, which provides insights into the determinants of IST project team success. Moreover, a first empirical assessment based on interview data collected from sixteen project experts shows the utility of the model. Consequently, the contribution of the present article is twofold: First, we present a conceptual model applicable to IST project teams. Second, the theoretical insights addressed are useful for project managers who are responsible for project success. Propositions that guide future research are provided, and implications of the model for both theory and practice are discussed.

THE STRATEGIC PLANNING OF IS/IT AT PT. LINTAS GROUP

The purpose of this study is to find the requirement of Information Systems and Information Technology (IS/IT) in the development of the construction of Base Transceiver Station tower (BTS). The methodology that is used is the method of Ward and Peppard. The relevant data were extracted from interviews with the management. Questionnaires were distributed to 16 respondents, and observation was made accordingly. The results of this study are in the form of the application portfolio recommendation, proposal of the IT Division enhancement and the action time of IS/IT. The planning of IS/IT is as a guiding framework for the development of future changes at PT. Crisis in Management Accounting Curricula: The Unclear Role of Information Systems and Information Technology

The purpose of this literature review paper is to critically evaluate the research on the presence of information systems and information technology (IS/IT) in and for management accounting curricula. Over the last 35 years, there were 13 management accounting curricula pronouncements in the literature; only 10 of them specified IS/IT knowledge and skills necessary for university graduates pursuing management accounting positions. The 10 educators pronouncements did not thoughtfully include IS/IT in the curricula and the pronouncements were not informed by the practice of management accounting. In contrast to research on the use of IS/IT in the practice of management accounting and the IFAC, the professional management accounting associations placed little importance on the inclusion of IS/IT in management accounting curricula. The paper recommends practitioners be questioned and studied in depth as the actual use IS/IT has in management accounting in order to make a practice-informed recommendation for the role of IS/IT in management accounting curricula.
