Pesquisas sobre Gestão de Dados em Ciência da Informação

Investigates scientific research on Data Management in journals integrated in the Reference Database of Journal Articles in Information Science (BRAPCI). The investigation has a theoretical-descriptive character and used the bibliometric method, a quantitative technique that aims to verify the indicators of scientific production. Among the main results are: a) Progressive increase in articles on data management, peaking in 2020 and 2021; b) Research Data Management as an emerging theme in Information Science - CI and c) Intensive production in co-authorship, enhancing one of the characteristics of e-Science. It is concluded that research in Data Management is intensely linked to e-Science practices, of frequent collaborative writing, but its sharing depends on the management of repositories and/or data management platforms, and that this administration is part of a universe larger technical/technological complex, which may interfere with its sharing and circulation.

Considerations about Heritage Education in publications indexed in BRAPCI

The production of scientific articles and events on Heritage Education indexed in the Reference Database of Journal Articles in Information Science was mapped. We sought to identify the stage of development of academic production; investigate who the researchers are, what are the preferred scientific communication channels and the areas where the topic approaches the world of Information Science. The research is quantitative-qualitative and exploratory in nature, using the methodology of metric information studies based on text analysis, covering the entire period of coverage of the base from 1972 to 2022. The research corpus consists of 32 publications. As a general result, it is clear that Archival Science and Librarianship are the disciplines that are most closely related to the topic respectively. It is concluded that scientific production on Heritage Education in Information Science is still embryonic, demanding discussions, studies and reflections compared to the potential of the areas involved.

Who cites the contributions by information science?

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to find out which research topics and methods in information science (IS) articles are used in other disciplines as indicated by citations.Design/methodology/approachThe study analyzes citations to articles in IS published in 31 scholarly IS journals in 2015. The study employs content analysis of articles published in 2015 receiving citations from publication venues representing IS and other disciplines in the citation window 2015–2021. The unit of analysis is the article-citing discipline pair. The data set consists of 1178 IS articles cited altogether 25 K times through 5 K publication venues. Each citation is seen as a contribution to the citing document’s discipline by the cited article, which represents some IS subareas and methodologies, and the author team's disciplinary composition, which is inferred from the authors’ affiliations.FindingsThe results show that the citation profiles of disciplines vary depending on research topics, methods and author disciplines. Disciplines external to IS are typically cited in IS articles authored by scholars with the same background. Thus, the export of ideas from IS to other disciplines is evidently smaller than the earlier findings claim. IS should not be credited for contributions by other disciplines published in IS literature.Originality/valueThis study is the first to analyze which research topics and methods in the articles of IS are of use in other disciplines as indicated by citations.

Tecnologias Digitais da Informação e Comunicação na Preservação da Memória e da Identidade Cultural de Comunidades Tradicionais

The present paper aimsto identify the use of Digital Technologies of Information and Communication –DTIC in the preservation of memory and cultural identity of traditional communities in the scientific productions of Information Science in Brazil. The methodology adopted is the Systematic Literature Review with qualitative approach, in which therewere researched journals indexed by the Reference Database of Journal Articles in Information Science (BRAPCI) published from 2016 to 2021. Therewere analyzed the journals which presented in the title, abstract and/or keywords themes about preservation of memory/identity related to the use of the DTIC/TIC and the traditional peoplesand communities of Brazil. The results point that therewere recovered few papersthat aretotally related to the preservation of memory, traditional communities and the use of DTIC/TIC. However, it was possible to note that the DTIC have been used with the purpose of preservation of memory in several contexts. Moreover, despite of the preservation of memory and cultural identity, the used DTIC still haveas a purpose the dissemination and visibility of these peoples, in order to require the due respect and the full exercise of their citizenship fromthe State and the Society.

Research Topic Specialization of Universities in Information Science and Library Science and Its Impact on Inter-University Collaboration

Universities significantly empower the development of science and technology, and inter-university research collaborations have been one of the major approaches. Considering each university has its expertise regarding research topics in a given discipline, the present paper examines the specialization of university research and its impact on inter-university collaborations. Based on a keyword network constructed via research articles in Information Science and Library Science, 10 research topics are identified. Accordingly, the research topic diversity of a university and the research topic similarity between two universities are quantified. The universities with diverse research topics are found to be more collaborative. A further collaboration network analysis based on the Quadradic Assignment Procedure reveals the important role of research topic similarity on the closeness and impact of collaborations. The different research topic specializations largely prevent close collaborations between two universities, but on the other hand, have the potential to form a complementary combination of knowledge leading to more impactful research output. The analysis and results highlight the important role of research topic specialization and provide insights for the university- or department-level strategy for research collaborations.

Altmetrics Linked Scholarly Information from Dimensions.ai Datasets for the Top 100 LIS Articles

This paper examines the presence of Library and Information Science articles in social media platforms by considering the top 100 highly socially cited articles from the Dimensions database. The study examines the association between major metrics. Data were collected from Dimensions.ai, Altmetrics.com, WoS, Google Scholar, and analyzed. The findings suggest that all the 100 LIS articles have got at least one mention from nine different social media platforms with increased attention from Mendeley and Twitter. The article “Objectivity and realms of explanation in academic journal articles concerning sex/gender: a comparison of Gender studies and the other social sciences” authored by Therese Soderlund et al., has been the top socially cited article in Dimensions with an altmetricss attention score of 684. The study found a weak positive correlation between social media citation with major citations from Web of Science (r=0.19), Google Scholar(r=0.18) and Dimensions(r=0.19). This is the first of its kind study to measure the social media attention of LIS articles based on the Dimensions dataset and the result gives more insights to LIS authors for evaluating the societal impact of their research using altmetricss indicators.

Academic Impact of Articles by Practitioners in the Field of Library and Information Science

This study measured the relative academic impact of articles by LIS practitioners by analyzing library and information science articles published between 2005 and 2014. The results revealed that, although practitioners were not the main knowledge contributors, the academic impact of articles by practitioners was not significantly lower than that of articles by academics. No significant differences in academic impact were present between any two types of coauthored articles. Articles from academic–practitioner collaboration were cited earlier than articles from practitioner–practitioner and academic–academic collaborations. This study suggests that LIS practitioners appear to benefit from collaborative scholarship with LIS researchers through more citations and higher impact.

The impact of Chinese library and information science on outside disciplines: A citation analysis

This paper uses citation analysis to measure the intellectual impact of Chinese library and information science on outside disciplines. It analyses 469 journals in disciplines outside the library and information science field containing citations to 20 Chinese library and information science journals from 1996 to 2015. It shows that Chinese library and information science mainly receives citations from related disciplines, such as business and management, communication, and computer science, and that the majority of library and information science articles are rarely cited. The library and information science subjects of bibliometrics, information technology and knowledge management are most likely to be cited.

Scientometric Analysis of Library and Information Science Articles During the Year 2008-2017 Using Web of Science

This article highlights the research productivity and scholarly communication of library and information science articles during the year 2008–2017 indexed by the Web of Science database. This analytical study consisting of 56 reports and data downloaded from the Web of Science (Clarivate Analysis) database. Scientometric research mainly focused on the range of research productivity in the field of library science in a specific period. To evaluate the Publication years, to identify the authors who wrote, the more articles, which journals published most of the relevant subject articles, which institute and country have mostly involved in a particular subject; all these are to mainly discussed in this study. The present study considered as a useful tool for effective allocation of research funds in the research community and the academic world of library and information science to enhance the research process.

Método de normalização de sintagmas nominais na indexação automática

Propõe e avalia um método de normalização de sintagmas nominais em termos canônicos, que visa contribuir para a melhora qualitativa da indexação automática, evitando a dispersão terminológica e preservando as palavras-chave dos autores, presentes no interior dos sintagmas nominais. A pesquisa é exploratória e empírica, pautada em pesquisa bibliográfica e realização de um experimento em um corpus de artigos científicos da área de Ciência da Informação. O método proposto é constituído por regras e critérios de normalização que obedecem às restrições de preservação da estrutura válida do sintagma nominal e das palavras-chave. O método proposto é avaliado através da presença de termos do Tesauro Brasileiro em Ciência da Informação (TBCI) nos sintagmas nominais resultantes da aplicação das regras e critérios. O método consiste em duas etapas: a primeira é composta por 85 regras para minimizar os sintagmas nominais extensos; a segunda etapa é composta por sete critérios responsáveis por eliminar dos sintagmas nominais elementos gramaticais desnecessários em sua estrutura. Os resultados da avaliação indicam que o método de normalização permite o alcance de resultados positivos, mesmo com dois critérios da segunda etapa não apresentando resultados para o corpus utilizado. Conclui-se que a aplicação do método de normalização em sistema de indexação automática é viável e traz bons resultados.

Memória Organizacional na Ciência da Informação: desvendando relações com o Conhecimento Organizacional

Este trabalho busca analisar os conceitos de Memória Organizacional por meio da produção científica publicada na Base de Dados de Periódicos em Ciência da Informação, com o intuito de entender suas relações com o Conhecimento Organizacional. Metodologicamente, caracteriza-se como uma pesquisa documental do tipo exploratória e descritiva com abordagem quali-quantitativa. Para análise e organização dos dados foi utilizada a análise de conteúdo enquanto método de procedimento, seguindo a técnica de análise temática, considerando: os autores que mais se destacaram na produção de pesquisas sobre a temática, distribuição de artigos de periódicos sobre Memória Organizacional por ano, periódicos indexados na base citada com publicações de artigos sobre o tema, principais palavras-chave abordadas pelos trabalhos analisados e, por último, a análise dos conceitos sobre Memória Organizacional para o entendimento de suas relações com Conhecimento Organizacional. Os resultados permitem inferir que houve um aumento no interesse por estudar a estrutura organizacional das empresas, evidenciando a necessidade de expandir as pesquisas envolvendo a cultura e memória das organizações. A pesquisa possibilitou verificar também que os conceitos de Memória Organizacional apresentam relações dialógicas com o Conhecimento Organizacional, permitindo concluir que possuem correlações nos sentidos metodológicos, conceituais e práticos.

The power law relationship between citation impact and multi-authorship patterns in articles in Information Science & Library Science journals

The aim of this paper is to extend the conversation about the correlation between collaboration and citation impact in articles in Information Science & Library Science journals by analyzing this correlation’s behavior using a power scaling law approach. 28,131 articles that received 215,693 citations were analyzed. The number of these articles that were published through collaboration accounts for 69%. In general, the scaling exponent of multi-authored articles, both international and domestic, increases over time while the exponent of single-authored papers decreases. The citation impact and collaboration patterns exhibit a power law correlation with a scaling exponent of 1.34 ± 0.02. Citations to multi-authored articles increased $$2^{1.34}$$ or 2.53 times each time the number of multi-authored papers doubled. The Matthew Effect is stronger for multi-authored papers than for single-authored. The scaling exponent for the power law relationship of domestic multi-authored papers was 1.35 ± 0.02. The citations to domestic multi-authored articles increased $$2^{1.35}$$ or 2.55 times each time the number of domestic multi-authored articles doubled. Contrary to previous studies we found that the Matthew Effect is stronger for domestic multi-authored papers than for international multi-authored ones.

ResearchGate versus Google Scholar: Which finds more early citations?

ResearchGate has launched its own citation index by extracting citations from documents uploaded to the site and reporting citation counts on article profile pages. Since authors may upload preprints to ResearchGate, it may use these to provide early impact evidence for new papers. This article assesses the whether the number of citations found for recent articles is comparable to other citation indexes using 2675 recently-published library and information science articles. The results show that in March 2017, ResearchGate found less citations than did Google Scholar but more than both Web of Science and Scopus. This held true for the dataset overall and for the six largest journals in it. ResearchGate correlated most strongly with Google Scholar citations, suggesting that ResearchGate is not predominantly tapping a fundamentally different source of data than Google Scholar. Nevertheless, preprint sharing in ResearchGate is substantial enough for authors to take seriously.

Methodological choices for research in Information Science: Contributions to domain analysis

Abstract The article focuses on the ways of organizing studies according to their methodological choices in the Base Referencial de Artigos de Periódicos em Ciência da Informação (Reference Database of Journal articles in Information Science). We highlight how the organization of scientific production by the methodological choices in Information Science contributes to the identification of its production features and domain analysis. We studied research categories and proposed five classification criteria: research purposes, approaches, focus, techniques and type of analysis. The proposal of a corpus in Information Science is empirically applied, represented by 689 articles, 10% of the production indexed in Base Referencial de Artigos de Periódicos em Ciência da Informação from 1972 to 2010. We adopt content analysis to interpret the methodological choices of authors identified in the corpus. The results point out that exploratory studies are more predominant when considering the research purpose; regarding the research approach, bibliographic and documentary studies are more predominant; systematic observation, questionnaire and interview were the most widely used techniques; document analysis and content analysis are the most widely used types of analysis; the research focus of theoretical, historical and bibliometric studies are more predominant. We found that some studies use two methodological choices and explicit epistemological approaches, such as the studies following the positivist approach in the 1970s, and those influenced by the phenomenological approach in the 1980s, which increased the use of methods in qualitative research.

Influence of the principle of least effort across disciplines

This study investigated the influence of the principle of least effort (PLE) introduced by Zipf in his 1949 work, Human Behavior and the Principle of Least Effort: An Introduction to Human Ecology. The influence of the PLE was measured by examining articles across various disciplines published between 1950 and 2013 that cited Zipf's original work. Our findings show that Zipf's law was the most influential concept embedded in the original work, with the PLE being the second most cited concept. Although the PLE was the focus of Zipf's 1949 book, its influence was much lower than that of Zipf's law. Furthermore, Zipf's law showed an increasing influence over time, whereas a decreasing influence was observed for the PLE. Of the 31 disciplines citing the PLE, library and information science articles cited it most, followed by psychology articles. Articles primarily cited the PLE to explain human behavior and language use. However, articles citing Zipf's law focused on its formula.

American Documentation (1950-1969)에서 저자 성별 분석 연구

The field of information science has been documented in several ways during its existence and in some ways has mirrored that of other scientific disciplines during the same period. This article examines variables related to author gender of information science articles in American Documentation (AD) during its entire run, 1950 through 1969. Published by the American Documentation Institute, AD was a primary information science journal of its time, changing its name in 1970 to the Journal of the American Society for Information Science (JASIS), corresponding with the change of the parent organization’s name to the American Society for Information Science (1968). AD was preceded by an earlier “information science” publication, the Journal of Documentary Reproduction (JDR), 1938-1942, issued by the American Library Association. Studies indicate that females contributed about 8% for the entire run of articles in JDR (1938-1942) and about 22% for the first twenty-seven years of JASIS (1970-1996). The present study explores the nature of female contributions to AD for the middle period (1950-1969). It has been determined that for the entire run of the journal under the name AD, female authors comprised about 17% of the contributors, which places their publishing percentage for this period between the earlier and later periods, thus expectedly filling the gap.

The distribution of references across texts: Some implications for citation analysis

In citation network analysis, complex behavior is reduced to a simple edge, namely, node A cites node B. The implicit assumption is that A is giving credit to, or acknowledging, B. It is also the case that the contributions of all citations are treated equally, even though some citations appear multiply in a text and others appear only once. In this study, we apply text-mining algorithms to a relatively large dataset (866 information science articles containing 32,496 bibliographic references) to demonstrate the differential contributions made by references. We (1) look at the placement of citations across the different sections of a journal article, and (2) identify highly cited works using two different counting methods (CountOne and CountX). We find that (1) the most highly cited works appear in the Introduction and Literature Review sections of citing papers, and (2) the citation rankings produced by CountOne and CountX differ. That is to say, counting the number of times a bibliographic reference is cited in a paper rather than treating all references the same no matter how many times they are invoked in the citing article reveals the differential contributions made by the cited works to the citing paper.

Information metrics (iMetrics): a research specialty with a socio-cognitive identity?

"Bibliometrics", "scientometrics", "informetrics", and "webometrics" can all be considered as manifestations of a single research area with similar objectives and methods, which we call "information metrics" or iMetrics. This study explores the cognitive and social distinctness of iMetrics with respect to the general information science (IS), focusing on a core of researchers, shared vocabulary and literature/knowledge base. Our analysis investigates the similarities and differences between four document sets. The document sets are drawn from three core journals for iMetrics research (Scientometrics, Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, and Journal of Informetrics). We split JASIST into document sets containing iMetrics and general IS articles. The volume of publications in this representation of the specialty has increased rapidly during the last decade. A core of researchers that predominantly focus on iMetrics topics can thus be identified. This core group has developed a shared vocabulary as exhibited in high similarity of title words and one that shares a knowledge base. The research front of this field moves faster than the research front of information science in general, bringing it closer to Price's dream.

A comparative study of interdisciplinary changes between information science and library science

This study employs the method of direct citation to analyze and compare the interdisciplinary characteristics of the two disciplines of library science and information science during the period of 1978---2007. Based on the research generated by five library science journals and five information science journals, library science researchers tend to cite publications from library and information science (LIS), education, business/management, sociology, and psychology, while researchers of information science tend to cite more publications from LIS, general science, computer science, technology, and medicine. This means that the disciplines with larger contributions to library science are almost entirely different from those contributing to information science. In addition, researchers of library science frequently cite publications from LIS; the rate is as high as 65.61%, which is much higher than the rate for information science, 49.50%. However, a decreasing trend in the percentage of LIS in library science indicates that library science researchers tend to cite more publications from non-LIS disciplines. A rising trend in the proportion of references to education sources is reported for library science articles, while a rising trend in the proportion of references to computer science sources has been found for information science articles. In addition, this study applies an interdisciplinary indicator, Brillouin's Index, to measurement of the degree of interdisciplinarity. The results confirm that the trend toward interdisciplinarity in both information science and library science has risen over the years, although the degree of interdisciplinarity in information science is higher than that in library science.
