Neural processing of prototypicality and simplicity of product design in forming design preferences.

The current study investigates the neural correlates when processing prototypicality and simplicity-affecting the preference of product design. Despite its significance, not much is known about how our brain processes these visual qualities of design when forming design preferences. We posit that, although fluency is the perceptual judgment accounting for the positive effects of both prototypicality and simplicity on design preference, the neural substrates for the fluency judgment associated with prototypicality would differ from those associated with simplicity. To investigate these issues, we conducted an fMRI study of preference decisions for actual product designs with different levels of prototypicality and simplicity. The results show a significant functional gradient between the preference processing of simplicity and prototypicality-i.e., involvement of the early ventral stream of visual information processing for simplicity evaluation but recruitment of the late ventral stream and parietal-frontal brain regions for prototypicality evaluation. The interaction between the simplicity and prototypicality evaluations was found in the extrastriate cortex in the right hemisphere. The segregated brain involvements suggest that the fluency judgment for prototypicality and simplicity contribute to preference choice in different levels of cognitive hierarchy in the perceptual mechanism of the design preference.

Perceptual Visual Inversion Secondary to Inhalation of Fumes of Sulfuryl Chloride (P4-12.003)

<h3>Objective:</h3> To describe a case of alteration of visual perception of objects and faces following Inhalation of Sulfuryl Chloride. <h3>Background:</h3> The neural pathways for object perception and recognition include two information-processing streams originating in occipital cortex. Dorsal stream extends to parietal lobe, and Ventral stream extends to inferior temporal lobe. Damage to each pathway can affect elements of visual perception affecting object recognition (what) and spatial perception (where and how). <h3>Design/Methods:</h3> Case report/literature review. <h3>Results:</h3> Fifty-three-year-old woman presented following inhalation of toxic fumes. Over the following hours and days, she lost the ability to speak her native tongue and could only communicate in her second language. She complained that most objects in her visual field were inverted, but not the whole scene. There are few reports of subjective visual field inversion without robust testing. We formulated novel experiments to probe deficits unique to her. On shape from shading (eggs vs. cavities) test, the light on top looked like cavities, unlike neurotypicals - implying that for her, the sun shines from below. She recognized upside-down faces faster than the correct way up and could easily read upside down. Prosopagnosics identify inverted faces more accurately than neurotypicals. We suggest there is a selective injury to the ventral stream,” What Pathway,” in the inferior temporal lobe (associated with object recognition). The insult relatively spared the dorsal stream “How and Where” in the posterior parietal cortex. This may explain why she exhibited mild Balint syndrome (optic ataxia, simultagnosia, oculomotor apraxia). Alternatively, the initial Balint may have been progressively corrected via visual feedback during reaching. Such correction does not occur for the ventral stream because we do not usually palpate people’s faces. <h3>Conclusions:</h3> Inversion of vision is rare but using stimuli designed to probe specific symptoms, we gain insight into cascade of neural signals that culminate in perception. <b>Disclosure:</b> Dr. Ramachandran has nothing to disclose. Perceptual processing demands influence voluntary task choice

Previous studies have suggested that people are sensitive to anticipated cognitive processing demands when deciding which task to perform, but the influence of perceptual processing demands on voluntary task choice is still unclear. The present study tested whether voluntary task choice behavior may be influenced by unpredictable task-specific perceptual processing demands. Across four experiments using different voluntary task choice procedures, we randomly varied the perceptual discriminability of stimuli (easy vs. hard color discrimination) for one of the two tasks. We reasoned that people could only reactively adjust their task choice behavior to the unpredictable discriminability manipulation if they engaged in some perceptual processing before a task goal becomes sufficiently activated to select the task for further processing. The results confirmed this hypothesis: Task performance data demonstrated the presence of perceptual (discriminability effects) and cognitive (switch costs) processing demands. Participants' choice behavior was affected by both types of processing demands (as reflected in a task repetition bias and a bias to select the color task with easy compared to hard discriminations). Thus, the present findings indicate that both perceptual and cognitive processing demands influence voluntary task choice behavior. We propose that higher-level goal activations interact at least partially with early perceptual processes to influence task choice behavior, suggesting a locus of voluntary choices during or after the perceptual stage within the information-processing stream.

Partisan-motivated sampling: Re-examining politically motivated reasoning across the information processing stream.

The United States is increasingly politically polarized, fueling intergroup conflict and intensifying partisan biases in cognition and behavior. To date, research on intergroup bias has separately examined biases in how people search for information and how they interpret information. Here, we integrate these two perspectives to elucidate how partisan biases manifest across the information processing stream, beginning with (a) a biased selection of information, leading to (b) skewed samples of information that interact with (c) motivated interpretations to produce evaluative biases. Across three experiments and four internal meta-analyses, participants (N = 2,431) freely sampled information about ingroup and outgroup members or ingroup and outgroup political candidates until they felt confident to evaluate them. Across experiments, we reliably find that most participants begin sampling information from the ingroup, which was associated with individual differences in group-based motives, and that participants sampled overall more information from the ingroup. This sampling behavior, in turn, generates more variability in ingroup (relative to outgroup) experiences. We find that more variability in ingroup experiences predicted when participants decided to stop sampling and was associated with more biased evaluations. We further demonstrate that participants employ different sampling strategies over time when the ingroup is de facto worse-obfuscating Real Group Differences-and that participants selectively integrate their experiences into evaluations based on congeniality. The proposed framework extends classic findings in psychology by demonstrating how biases in sampling behavior interact with motivated interpretations to produce downstream evaluative biases and has implications for intergroup bias interventions. Top-Down Modulation of Early Visual Processing in V1: Dissociable Neurophysiological Effects of Spatial Attention, Attentional Load and Task-Relevance.

Until today, there is an ongoing discussion if attention processes interact with the information processing stream already at the level of the C1, the earliest visual electrophysiological response of the cortex. We used two highly powered experiments (each N = 52) and examined the effects of task relevance, spatial attention, and attentional load on individual C1 amplitudes for the upper or lower visual hemifield. Bayesian models revealed evidence for the absence of load effects but substantial modulations by task-relevance and spatial attention. When the C1-eliciting stimulus was a task-irrelevant, interfering distracter, we observed increased C1 amplitudes for spatially unattended stimuli. For spatially attended stimuli, different effects of task-relevance for the two experiments were found. Follow-up exploratory single-trial analyses revealed that subtle but systematic deviations from the eye-gaze position at stimulus onset between conditions substantially influenced the effects of attention and task relevance on C1 amplitudes, especially for the upper visual field. For the subsequent P1 component, attentional modulations were clearly expressed and remained unaffected by these deviations. Collectively, these results suggest that spatial attention, unlike load or task relevance, can exert dissociable top-down modulatory effects at the C1 and P1 levels.

Continuous, multidimensional coding of 3D complex tactile stimuli by primary sensory neurons of the vibrissal system

Across all sensory modalities, first-stage sensory neurons are an information bottleneck: they must convey all information available for an animal to perceive and act in its environment. Our understanding of coding properties of primary sensory neurons in the auditory and visual systems has been aided by the use of increasingly complex, naturalistic stimulus sets. By comparison, encoding properties of primary somatosensory afferents are poorly understood. Here, we use the rodent whisker system to examine how tactile information is represented in primary sensory neurons of the trigeminal ganglion (Vg). Vg neurons have long been thought to segregate into functional classes associated with separate streams of information processing. However, this view is based on Vg responses to restricted stimulus sets which potentially underreport the coding capabilities of these neurons. In contrast, the current study records Vg responses to complex three-dimensional (3D) stimulation while quantifying the complete 3D whisker shape and mechanics, thereby beginning to reveal their full representational capabilities. The results show that individual Vg neurons simultaneously represent multiple mechanical features of a stimulus, do not preferentially encode principal components of the stimuli, and represent continuous and tiled variations of all available mechanical information. These results directly contrast with proposed codes in which subpopulations of Vg neurons encode select stimulus features. Instead, individual Vg neurons likely overcome the information bottleneck by encoding large regions of a complex sensory space. This proposed tiled and multidimensional representation at the Vg directly constrains the computations performed by more central neurons of the vibrissotrigeminal pathway.

Decoding of cognitive processes involved in the continuous performance task

Decoding of electroencephalogram brain representations is a powerful data driven technique to assess the stream of cognitive information processing. It could promote a more thorough understanding of cognitive control networks. For many years, the continuous performance task has been utilized to investigate impaired proactive and reactive cognitive functions. So far, mainly task performance and univariate electroencephalogram were involved in such investigations. In this study, we benefit from multi-variate pattern analysis of continuous performance task variations to provide a more complete spatio-temporal outline of information processing flow involved in sustained and transient attention and response preparation. Besides effects that are well in line with previous EEG research but could be described in more spatial and temporal detail by the used methods, our results could suggest the presence of a higher order feedback control system when expectations are violated. Such a feedback control is related to modulations of behavior both intra- and inter-individually.

Abnormal Habituation of the Auditory Event-Related Potential P2 Component in Patients With Schizophrenia.

Auditory event-related potentials (ERP) may serve as diagnostic tools for schizophrenia and inform on the susceptibility for this condition. Particularly, the examination of N1 and P2 components of the auditory ERP may shed light on the impairments of information processing streams in schizophrenia. However, the habituation properties (i.e., decreasing amplitude with the repeated presentation of an auditory stimulus) of these components remain poorly studied compared to other auditory ERPs. Therefore, the current study used a roving paradigm to assess the modulation and habituation of N1 and P2 to simple (pure tones) and complex sounds (human voices and bird songs) in 26 first-episode patients with schizophrenia and 27 healthy participants. To explore the habituation properties of these ERPs, we measured the decrease in amplitude over a train of seven repetitions of the same stimulus (either bird songs or human voices). We observed that, for human voices, N1 and P2 amplitudes decreased linearly from stimulus 1–7, in both groups. Regarding bird songs, only the P2 component showed a decreased amplitude with stimulus presentation, exclusively in the control group. This suggests that patients did not show a fading of neural responses to repeated bird songs, reflecting abnormal habituation to this stimulus. This could reflect the inability to inhibit irrelevant or redundant information at later stages of auditory processing. In turn schizophrenia patients appear to have a preserved auditory processing of human voices.

Parallel Social Information Processing Circuits Are Differentially Impacted in Autism

Parallel processing circuits are thought to dramatically expand the network capabilities of the nervous system. Magnocellular and parvocellular oxytocin neurons have been proposed to subserve two parallel streams of social information processing, which allow a single molecule to encode a diverse array of ethologically distinct behaviors. Here we provide the first comprehensive characterization of magnocellular and parvocellular oxytocin neurons in male mice, validated across anatomical, projection target, electrophysiological, and transcriptional criteria. We next use novel multiple feature selection tools in Fmr1-KO mice to provide direct evidence that normal functioning of the parvocellular but not magnocellular oxytocin pathway is required for autism-relevant social reward behavior. Finally, we demonstrate that autism risk genes are enriched in parvocellular compared with magnocellular oxytocin neurons. Taken together, these results provide the first evidence that oxytocin-pathway-specific pathogenic mechanisms account for social impairments across a broad range of autism etiologies.

Neural Dynamics of the Combined Discounting of Delay and Probability During the Evaluation of a Delayed Risky Reward.

Delay discounting and probability discounting are two important processes, but in daily life there are many more situations that involve delayed risky outcomes. Although neuroscience research has extensively investigated delay and probability discounting in isolation, little research has explored the neural correlates of the combined discounting of delay and probability. Using the event-related brain potentials (ERPs) technique, we designed a novel paradigm to investigate neural processes related to the combined discounting of delay and probability during the evaluation of a delayed risky reward. ERP results suggested distinct temporal dynamics for delay and probability processing during combined discounting. Both the early frontal P200 and the N2 reflected only probability, not delay, while the parietal P300 was sensitive to both probability and delay. Furthermore, the late positive potential (LPP) was sensitive to probability, but insensitive to delay. These results suggest that probability has a prolonged modulatory effect on reward evaluation in the information processing stream. These findings contribute to an understanding of the neural processes underlying the combined discounting of delay and probability. The limitation of this study is to only consider four delay and probability combinations. Future studies can explore the combined discounting of more probability and delay combinations to further test the robustness of the conclusion.

Hierarchical cortical gradients in somatosensory processing

Sensory information is processed in the visual cortex in distinct streams of different anatomical and functional properties. A comparable organizational principle has also been proposed to underlie auditory processing. This raises the question of whether a similar principle characterize the somatosensory domain. One property of a cortical stream is a hierarchical organization of the neuronal response properties along an anatomically distinct pathway. Indeed, several hierarchies between specific somatosensory cortical regions have been identified, primarily using electrophysiology, in non-human primates. However, it has been unclear how these local hierarchies are organized throughout the cortex. Here we used phase-encoded bilateral full-body light touch stimulation in healthy humans under functional MRI to study the large-scale organization of hierarchies in the somatosensory domain. We quantified two measures of hierarchy of BOLD responses, selectivity and laterality. We measured how selectivity and laterality change as we move away from the central sulcus within four gross anatomically-distinct regions. We found that both selectivity and laterality decrease in three directions: parietal, posteriorly along the parietal lobe, frontal, anteriorly along the frontal lobe and medial, inferiorly-anteriorly along the medial wall. The decline of selectivity and laterality along these directions provides evidence for hierarchical gradients. In view of the anatomical segregation of these three directions, the multiplicity of body representations in each region and the hierarchical gradients in our findings, we propose that as in the visual and auditory domains, these directions are streams of somatosensory information processing.

Differential Impacts of Repeated Sampling on Odor Representations by Genetically-Defined Mitral and Tufted Cell Subpopulations in the Mouse Olfactory Bulb.

Sniffing, the active control of breathing beyond passive respiration, is used by mammals to modulate olfactory sampling. Sniffing allows animals to make odor-guided decisions within ∼200 ms, but animals routinely engage in bouts of high-frequency sniffing spanning several seconds; the impact of such repeated odorant sampling on odor representations remains unclear. We investigated this question in the mouse olfactory bulb (OB), where mitral and tufted cells (MTCs) form parallel output streams of odor information processing. To test the impact of repeated odorant sampling on MTC responses, we used two-photon imaging in anesthetized male and female mice to record activation of MTCs while precisely varying inhalation frequency. A combination of genetic targeting and viral expression of GCaMP6 reporters allowed us to access mitral cell (MC) and superficial tufted cell (sTC) subpopulations separately. We found that repeated odorant sampling differentially affected responses in MCs and sTCs, with MCs showing more diversity than sTCs over the same time period. Impacts of repeated sampling among MCs included both increases and decreases in excitation, as well as changes in response polarity. Response patterns across simultaneously-imaged MCs reformatted over time, with representations of different odorants becoming more distinct. Individual MCs responded differentially to changes in inhalation frequency, whereas sTC responses were more uniform over time and across frequency. Our results support the idea that MCs and TCs comprise functionally distinct pathways for odor information processing, and suggest that the reformatting of MC odor representations by high-frequency sniffing may serve to enhance the discrimination of similar odors.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Repeated sampling of odorants during high-frequency respiration (sniffing) is a hallmark of active odorant sampling by mammals; however, the adaptive function of this behavior remains unclear. We found distinct effects of repeated sampling on odor representations carried by the two main output channels from the mouse olfactory bulb (OB), mitral and tufted cells (MTCs). Mitral cells (MCs) showed more diverse changes in response patterns over time as compared with tufted cells (TCs), leading to odorant representations that were more distinct after repeated sampling. These results support the idea that MTCs contribute different aspects to encoding odor information, and they indicate that MCs (but not TCs) may play a primary role in the modulation of olfactory processing by sampling behavior.

Forms of prediction in the nervoussystem.

The idea that predictions shape how we perceive and comprehend the world has become increasingly influential in the field of systems neuroscience. It also forms an important framework for understanding neuropsychiatric disorders, which are proposed to be the result of disturbances in the mechanisms through which prior information influences perception and belief, leading to the production of suboptimal models of the world. There is a widespread tendency to conceptualize the influence of predictions exclusively in terms of 'top-down' processes, whereby predictions generated in higher-level areas exert their influence on lower-level areas within an information processing hierarchy. However, this excludes from consideration the predictive information embedded in the 'bottom-up' stream of information processing. We describe evidence for the importance of this distinction and argue that it is critical for the development of the predictive processing framework and, ultimately, for an understanding of the perturbations that drive the emergence of neuropsychiatric symptoms and experiences.

Neuronal response properties across cytochrome oxidase stripes in primate V2.

Cytochrome oxidase histochemistry reveals large-scale cortical modules in area V2 of primates known as thick, thin, and interstripes. Anatomical, electrophysiological, and tracing studies suggest that V2 cytochrome oxidase stripes participate in functionally distinct streams of visual information processing. However, there is controversy whether the different V2 compartments indeed correlate with specialized neuronal response properties. We used multiple-electrode arrays (16 × 2, 8 × 4 and 4 × 4 matrices) to simultaneously record the spiking activity (N = 190 single units) across distinct V2 stripes in anesthetized and paralyzed capuchin monkeys (N = 3 animals, 6 hemispheres). Visual stimulation consisted of moving bars and full-field gratings with different contrasts, orientations, directions of motion, spatial frequencies, velocities, and color contrasts. Interstripe neurons exhibited the strongest orientation and direction selectivities compared to the thick and thin stripes, with relatively stronger coding for orientation. Additionally, they responded best to higher spatial frequencies and to lower stimulus velocities. Thin stripes showed the highest proportion (80%) of neurons selective to color contrast (compared to 47% and 21% for thick and interstripes, respectively). The great majority of the color selective cells (86%) were also orientation selective. Additionally, thin stripe neurons continued to increase their firing rate for stimulus contrasts above 50%, while thick and interstripe neurons already exhibited some degree of response saturation at this point. Thick stripes best coded for lower spatial frequencies and higher stimulus velocities. In conclusion, V2 CytOx stripes exhibit a mixed degree of segregation and integration of information processing, shedding light into the early mechanisms of vision.

Variability and stability of large-scale cortical oscillation patterns.

Individual differences in brain organization exist at many spatiotemporal scales and underlie the diversity of human thought and behavior. Oscillatory neural activity is crucial for these processes, but how such rhythms are expressed across the cortex within and across individuals is poorly understood. We conducted a systematic characterization of brain-wide activity across frequency bands and oscillatory features during rest and task execution. We found that oscillatory profiles exhibit sizable group-level similarities, indicating the presence of common templates of oscillatory organization. Nonetheless, well-defined subject-specific network profiles were discernible beyond the structure shared across individuals. These individualized patterns were sufficiently stable to recognize individuals several months later. Moreover, network structure of rhythmic activity varied considerably across distinct oscillatory frequencies and features, indicating the existence of several parallel information processing streams embedded in distributed electrophysiological activity. These findings suggest that network similarity analyses may be useful for understanding the role of large-scale brain oscillations in physiology and behavior.

Partitioning of the primate intraparietal cortex based on connectivity pattern and immunohistochemistry for Cat‐301 and SMI‐32

We propose a partitioning of the primate intraparietal sulcus (IPS) using immunoarchitectural and connectivity criteria. We studied the immunoarchitecture of the IPS areas in the capuchin monkey using Cat-301 and SMI-32 immunohistochemistry. In addition, we investigated the IPS projections to areas V4, TEO, PO, and MT using retrograde tracer injections in nine hemispheres of seven animals. The pattern and distribution of Cat-301 and SMI-32 immunostaining revealed multiple areas in the IPS, in the adjoining PO cleft and in the annectant gyrus, with differential staining patterns found for areas V3d, DM, V3A, DI, PO, POd, CIP-1, CIP-2, VIPa, VIPp, LIPva, LIPvp, LIPda, LIPdp, PIPv, PIPd, MIPv, MIPd, AIPda, AIPdp, and AIPv. Areas V4, TEO, PO, MT, which belong to different cortical streams of visual information processing, receive projections from at least twenty different areas within the IPS and adjoining regions. In six animals, we analyzed the distribution of retrogradely labeled cells in tangential sections of flat-mount IPS preparations. The lateral bank of the IPS projects to regions belonging both to the ventral (V4 and TEO) and dorsal (PO and MT) streams. The region on the floor of the IPS (i.e., VIP) projects predominantly to dorsal stream areas. Finally, the medial bank of the IPS (i.e., MIP) projects solely to the dorsalmedial stream (PO). Therefore, our data suggest that ventral and dorsal streams remain segregated within the IPS, and that its projections to the dorsal stream can be further segregated based on those targeting the dorsolateral versus the dorsomedial subdivisions.

Online recognition of actions involving objects

We present an online system for real time recognition of actions involving objects working in online mode. The system merges two streams of information processing running in parallel. One is carried out by a hierarchical self-organizing map (SOM) system that recognizes the performed actions by analysing the spatial trajectories of the agent's movements. It consists of two layers of SOMs and a custom made supervised neural network. The activation sequences in the first layer SOM represent the sequences of significant postures of the agent during the performance of actions. These activation sequences are subsequently recoded and clustered in the second layer SOM, and then labeled by the activity in the third layer custom made supervised neural network. The second information processing stream is carried out by a second system that determines which object among several in the agent's vicinity the action is applied to. This is achieved by applying a proximity measure. The presented method combines the two information processing streams to determine what action the agent performed and on what object. The action recognition system has been tested with excellent performance.

Selective inhibitory control of pyramidal neuron ensembles and cortical subnetworks by chandelier cells.

The neocortex comprises multiple information processing streams mediated by subsets of glutamatergic pyramidal cells (PCs) that receive diverse inputs and project to distinct targets. How GABAergic interneurons regulate the segregation and communication among intermingled PC subsets that contribute to separate brain networks remains unclear. Here we demonstrate that a subset of GABAergic chandelier cells (ChCs) in the prelimbic cortex (PL), which innervate PCs at spike initiation site, selectively control PCs projecting to the basolateral amygdala (BLAPC) compared to those projecting to contralateral cortex (CCPC). These ChCs in turn receive preferential input from local and contralateral CCPCs as opposed to BLAPCs and BLA neurons (the PL-BLA network). Accordingly, optogenetic activation of ChCs rapidly suppresses BLAPCs and BLA activity in freely behaving mice. Thus, the exquisite connectivity of ChCs not only mediates directional inhibition between local PC ensembles but may also shape communication hierarchies between global networks.

Is the extrastriate body area part of the dorsal visuomotor stream?

The extrastriate body area (EBA) processes visual information about body parts, and it is considered one among a series of category-specific perceptual modules distributed across the occipito-temporal cortex. However, recent evidence raises the possibility that EBA might also provide an interface between perception and action, linking the ventral and dorsal streams of visual information processing. Here, we assess anatomical evidence supporting this possibility. We localise EBA in individual subjects using a perceptual task and compare the characteristics of its functional and structural connectivity to those of two perceptual areas, the lateral occipital complex (LOC) and the fusiform body area (FBA), separately for each hemisphere. We apply complementary analyses of resting-state fMRI and diffusion-weighted MRI data in a group of healthy right-handed human subjects (N = 31). Functional and structural connectivity profiles indicate that EBA interacts more strongly with dorsal-stream regions compared to other portions of the occipito-temporal cortex involved in processing body parts (FBA) and object identification (LOC). These findings provide anatomical ground for a revision of the functional role of EBA. Building on a number of recent observations, we suggest that EBA contributes to planning goal-directed actions, possibly by specifying a desired postural configuration to parieto-frontal areas involved in computing movement parameters.
