Application of BIM+GIS Integration Technology in the Construction of Urban Intelligent Water Informatization

Urban intelligent water informatization is the process of managing and operating urban water systems with the use of contemporary information and communication technology in order to increase productivity, security, and sustainability. Establishing the appropriate infrastructure is the initial stage in building an intelligent water system so that management can choose wisely how to manage and operate the water system. Building information modeling (BIM) is a digital depiction of a building's or infrastructure's structural and functional details. In most metropolitan regions, a fast development phase is predicted to cause several water issues, including water resource shortages, floods, poor drainage, and water resource contamination. As a result, a practical approach is required for urban intelligent water information technology with the help of artificial intelligence techniques. Intelligent water systems may be built using Building Information Modeling (BIM) software to increase the system's effectiveness, stability, and durability. By offering a potent tool for storing and analyzing geographical data connected to the water distribution system, a geographic information system (GIS) can play a crucial role in the development of urban intelligent water informatization using ArcGIS mapping Software. The Internet of Things (IoT) system is used to implement intelligent water informatization, hardware implementation using ESP32, and software development using MQTT Broker and Node-Red. As a result, we recommended utilizing BIM+GIS integration technology for building urban intelligent water informatization. The suggested system is evaluated using management efficiency, urban flood control, innovative Construction, intensive management, and computation cost. In this research, the main objective is to identify where there are water leaks broken pipes and early warning system and monitoring system for flash flood disasters in urban areas. The result findings show that the integration of BIM and GIS provides a comprehensive platform for managing complex water informatization infrastructure projects and maximizes efficiency and sustainability.

Transforming construction: The growing role of mechatronics in building our infrastructure

Mechatronics, the synergistic integration of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, control engineering, and computer science, is progressively transforming the construction industry. This paper explores how mechatronic technologies are being applied across the construction lifecycle to enhance productivity, quality, safety, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness. Core mechatronic technologies changing construction include automated material handling systems, advanced construction robotics, sensor networks for monitoring, laser scanning for accurate modeling and control, and building information modeling (BIM) software. Mechatronics offers multifaceted benefits spanning from enhanced labor productivity and construction velocity to superior quality control, safety, and process optimization. However, realizing the immense potential of mechatronics in construction requires overcoming key challenges including high upfront costs, lack of technical skills, organizational resistance, integration difficulties, and reliability concerns. With thoughtful leadership and implementation, mechatronics promises to revolutionize construction, shifting it towards more automated, streamlined, and optimized techniques. This paper delineates the tremendous potential of mechatronics in construction regarding benefits, technologies, and challenges. The outlook is promising for intelligent mechatronic systems to profoundly enhance productivity, quality, and safety as construction progresses towards greater automation and optimization.

Analysing carbon impacts of green roof at Hilton Watford: life-cycle assessment approach

This paper investigates the environmental aspects and energy impacts of implementing a green roof system at the Hilton Watford hotel, utilising building information modelling software (Revit) for three-dimensional modelling and Insight for energy simulation. Following EN 15804:2012+A2:2019, the study employs life-cycle assessment methodology, focusing on embodied and operational carbon. Environmental Product Declarations, Inventory of Carbon and Energy database and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors guideline inform embodied carbon calculations. The results show the green roof system releases 263 839.56 kgCO2e as embodied carbon, while its sedum layer sequesters 211 468.12 kgCO2e over a 50 year lifespan. Energy efficiency analysis indicates a 3.3 kWh/(m2/year) reduction in energy consumption, leading to a 112 130.31 kgCO2e reduction in operational carbon dioxide emissions, highlighting the environmental benefits of green roof adoption. The findings suggest a 0.35% mitigation of whole life-cycle carbon dioxide emissions, with greater impact in situations of lower insulation effectiveness, showcasing the potential of green roofs in reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Additionally, the green roof incurs a minimal financial burden, constituting only 0.51% of the overall project cost.

3D VISIBILITY ANALYSES USING BIM & GIS INTEGRATION

Abstract. Visibility is a significant parameter for defining, developing, and evaluating space in the AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) Industry. Therefore, visibility is considered when designing visually comfortable buildings. Visibility is also a significant parameter in building appraisal. Therefore, in this study, visibility was examined through 3-dimensional (3D) isovists, which are thought to represent the human perception of vision. Visibility was examined regarding spatial openness and mathematically calculated “visual openness indexes” were developed for building valuation. The analysis area was selected in Istanbul, and the urban model was created by using Geographic Information System (GIS) data in Building Information Modelling (BIM) software. Due to, economic reasons affecting different stakeholders in building valuation, it is necessary to create an accurate urban model. For this reason, in the study, the process of obtaining current and accurate GIS data covering the world from open sources is preferred. Then, the process of correctly transferring GIS data to BIM is explained. A sufficient urban model for analysis is created. To calculate the openness indexes, the dormitory in the Golden Horn was modelled in BIM, and different rooms' openness indexes were calculated. Some solutions have been presented to ensure the modelling process with large file sizes and in the calculation of visibility factors. To allow different AEC stakeholders to calculate these indexes, modelling, and calculation is done within BIM. Eventually, it was calculated how much the building users cognitively perceive the openness of the view, and a mathematical comparison of the different rooms' openness indexes was provided.

Optimising building envelope and insulation materials for energy efficiency and life-cycle cost in Cypriot residences

ABSTRACT Residential buildings consume approximately 36% of total electricity consumption in Cyprus and this is expected to continue increasing in the coming years. This study explores the potential for energy savings in residential buildings in Cyprus through optimising building envelopes and insulation materials. Using building information modelling and energy modelling software, the study analyses 120 combinations of building envelopes and eight insulation materials, identifying an optimal combination of wall, roof, and flooring materials that could result in 32% energy load reductions and 27% lower life-cycle costs compared to the median scenario. High-density rock wool insulation on roofs and double-glazed windows were also found to offer both monetary and energy performance benefits. A sensitivity analysis revealed that the current high energy prices could provide greater economic incentives to adopt these optimisation strategies. Optimising building materials in Cyprus could play a critical role in climate strategy while also offering significant economic benefits.

Recent Technological Advancements in BIM and LCA Integration for Sustainable Construction: A Review

In the high-energy, high-carbon landscape of the construction industry, a detailed and precise life cycle assessment (LCA) is essential. This review examines the role of building information modeling (BIM) software in streamlining the LCA process to enhance efficiency and accuracy. Despite its potential, challenges such as software interoperability and compatibility persist, with no unified standard for choosing BIM-integrated LCA software. Besides, the review explores the capabilities and limitations of various BIM software, LCA tools, and energy consumption tools, and presents characteristics of BIM-LCA integration cases. It critically discusses BIM-LCA integration methods and data exchange techniques, including bill of quantities import, Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) import, BIM viewer usage, direct LCA calculations with BIM plugins, and LCA plugin calculations. Finally, concluding with future perspectives, the study aims to guide the development of advanced LCA tools for better integration with BIM software, addressing a vital need in sustainable construction practices.

Holistic Approach to Multipurpose Stadium Design: Advance Structural Analysis Strategies

The current paper discusses about the work made on the study to develop a highly adaptable and versatile stadium, departing from traditional single-purpose designs, with a focus on maximizing utility. With a substantial gross seating capacity of 61424, the stadium is intended to host various sports competitions and large public gatherings. The planning process relies on Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Building Information Modelling (BIM) software to ensure precise detailing in structural aspects. Advanced engineering software enhances structural analysis, allowing for comprehensive investigations into dynamic load responses. The design's reliability is ensured through a combination of manual calculations and engineering software outcomes.

Formation of an information retrieval system of visual programming scenarios for information modeling software complexes

This article discusses the process of creating an application based on a specialized database for working with a variety of scripts – visual programming scenarios. The SQL query Language (Structured Query Language) was used as a key tool for implementing the application, data for systematization was presented from the file system for storing scripts of the organization in question. In view of the popularization of the use of visual programming tools in information modeling software complexes, there is a problem of systematization of a regularly increasing number of scripts both in a specific organization and in the market as a whole. The purpose of this work is to develop an information retrieval system for working with visual programming scripts, the tasks are to analyze the file structure of script storage, form database requirements, develop algorithms for database formation and dynamic SQL query formation to filter the necessary scripts. Automation of the implementation of all the above tasks is performed on the basis of the high-level programming language C++ with the integration of SQL queries in the cross-platform development environment Qt Creator. As a result, an information search engine is presented in the form of an application "Script Manager".

Analysis of Thermal Bridges with an Automated Framework using BIM

In response to increasingly stringent energy performance requirements for buildings, the need for energy-efficient construction becomes ever more important. Although new construction technologies have emerged, thermal bridges are still common in new and especially in to-be renovated buildings. To facilitate analysing the effect of thermal bridges this paper investigates the development of a method to automatically integrate their effect into energy simulations. The developed workflow starts with integrating thermal bridges into Building Information Modeling (BIM) software. Subsequently, the thermal bridges are exported to the open source format Industry Foundation Class (IFC). Finally, a conversion of the IFC file to a readable file for the energy simulation software Modelica, using the ifc2modelica tool is shown. Furthermore, it investigates the impact of thermal bridges on different key performance indicators (KPIs) for both renovation and new build cases. This research aims at efficiently integrating thermal bridges in energy simulations during early design stages. The foundation for a BIM-library for standard thermal bridges has been developed, allowing an easy integration in existing BIM models with good simulation results.

Benefits of Building Information Modeling (BIM) Software Using IBM SPSS Statistics

In the context of the mentioned software, the Cronbach's alpha reliability result for the following applications: autocad, revit, sketchup, navisworks, archicad, aurora solar, autocad arch, and tekla structures, is recorded as 0.622. This value indicates a reliability level of 62%. Based on the findings from the literature review, this Cronbach's alpha value of 62% is considered for further analysis.

Building information modeling integrated with damage detection algorithm for structural health monitoring of bridge

In this paper, a method for damage monitoring of bridges using modal parameters is presented. At first, fundamentals of frequency-based damage occurrence alarming are introduced. Second, building information modeling (BIM) software is used to construct a 3D geometric model of a bridge. A custom tool add-in based on Microsoft Excel is linked and analyzed related data for damage detection of the bridge using modal parameters. A finite element model of a bridge girder is established to investigate vibration characteristics under prestressing loss and structural damage. Frequency-based damage detection is implemented to alarm the damage occurrence of an inspected bridge girder. Last, the structural information of the bridge is updated to the BIM model to provide the structural performance of the inspected structure. The result reveals that BIM integrated with the damage detection algorithm can efficiently facilitate structural health bridges.

Recent progress on BIM-based sustainable buildings: State of the art review

In recent decades, the planet has been negatively impacted by the construction industry due to the development of various infrastructures. Thus, it became one of the most polluting sectors that have required increasing the environmental awareness of public and private entities. Under these circumstances, there are urgent efforts required to mitigate these negative impacts. Different approaches have been made for sustainable buildings based on construction technologies, where sustainability must be included as the main premise from the initial stage of the project. Through a systematic literature review, different methodologies are analyzed such as Building Information Modeling (BIM), Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), and Building Energy Modeling (BEM) based on the existing regulations and standards of each country. The existing digital tools allow for the development of various low-carbon technologies, including sustainable materials and new integrations between them to find sustainable solutions and reduce carbon emissions from buildings. Several limitations exist as Building Information Modeling (BIM) software does not have all the green applications. Therefore, clear results are needed for effective indicators to help interested parties appropriate these technologies and invest time and money in projects based on Building Information Modeling (BIM) and learn a useful lesson for future projects from these technological tools.

Simulation and Analysis of Thermal Insulators Applied to Post-Disaster Temporary Shelters in Tropical Countries

Containers are fundamental elements for the development of international trade; however, it is estimated that there are more than 17 million retired containers stacked in ports around the world. Considering the high costs involved in the process of storing, transporting, or destroying these materials, in addition to their non-degradable nature, it is urgent to develop strategies for the sustainable use of these decommissioned containers. In this context, repurposing these containers into permanent structures is becoming a predominant trend. One solution is converting steel shipping structures into habitable spaces. However, due to the urgency with which Container Houses (CHs) are demanded in case of disasters, they are usually planned to be built as quickly as possible, serving as many people as possible, and do not consider the basic principles of energy efficiency. The performance of the CHs is, then, impaired, including risks of overheating, corrosion, and rust, among others, during service, making them an even more stressful experience for their users who are already in a vulnerable situation. Therefore, the objective of this study is to compare the performance of two thermal insulators applied to a temporary shelter container designed to promptly serve vulnerable populations. The model was developed in Building Information Modeling (BIM) software and simulated in Building Energy Simulation (BES) software, aiming to obtain subsidies for its technical and economic viability analysis. The results indicated that thermal insulators are able to generate significant savings in energy consumption, with mineral wool presenting better long-term performance.

PERBANDINGAN ESTIMASI BIAYA STRUKTUR BANGUNAN ANTARA SOFTWARE AUTODESK REVIT DENGAN CUBICOST

Building Information Modeling (BIM) software commonly used in Indonesia to calculate cost estimates includes Autodesk Revit and Cubicost. Previous studies have shown significant differences comparing the estimated cost of structural work in Autodesk Revit with conventional methods. Further study is needed to compare Autodesk Revit with Cubicost in the same project, with the purpose of knowing the difference in the estimated cost of structural work. The object of this study was the Urban Homes Residential Apartment construction project by reviewing the upper structure. The chosen research strategy was in accordance with the case study objectives. The process begins with the preparating of the WBS (Work Breakdown Structure), designing the BIM 3D, calculating the estimated structural work cost resulting from quantity takeoff using work unit price analysis, and analyzing the estimated cost comparison between Cubicost and Revit BIM software. Based on the analysis results, the estimated cost of building structures using Cubicost is Rp 80,485,995,692, - and has differences of ±13.1% compared to using Revit.

A Design for Safety (DFS) Framework for Automated Inspection Risks in Metro Stations by Integrating a Knowledge Base and Building Information Modeling

Safety issues have always been of great concern to the metro construction industry. Numerous studies have shown that safety issues are closely related to the design phase. Many safety problems can be solved or improved by developing the design. This study proposes a structured identification method for safety risks based on the metro design specifications, journal literature, and expert experience. A safety knowledge base (KB) for the design was established to realize safety knowledge sharing and reusing. The KB has been developed into Building Information Modeling (BIM) software as an inspection plug-in to achieve automated analysis and retrieval of safety risks. The designers are provided with a visualization of risk components to locate and improve the pre-control measures of the design. Subsequently, the process of design for safety (DFS) database creation was demonstrated with a metro station project, and the feasibility of applying the KB to safety checking in BIM was verified. In response to the inspection results, safety risks in the construction phases can be eliminated or avoided by standardizing and improving the design.

Developing an Interactive Model to Integrate Human Expertise with Building Information Modeling

Considering the significant amount of time and money wasted yearly in fixing errors caused by miscommunication and inadequate information on project sites, relaying the knowledge of field experts through design software may reduce communication-based conflicts in projects. This study aimed to create a model to integrate human field expertise in the construction process with building information modeling (BIM) software. This study is based on the premise of the significance of human involvement in construction. Basement construction in Fargo, North Dakota, was the construction scenario selected for scrutiny in this study. Surveys and in-person interviews were conducted with local contractors to ascertain valuable recommendations and views on basement construction in Fargo. Information from these contractors was coded into models to offer warnings and recommendations on the assessed basement construction activities to help architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) professionals with design, planning, and other processes required before and during construction. Combining BIM (with all its proven strengths) with the human aspect of construction will significantly improve the construction process, especially in decision-making and risk mitigation.

Designing a Large-Scale Immersive Visit in Architecture, Engineering, and Construction

Throughout history, tools for engineering in the building industry have evolved. Due to the arrival of Industry 4.0, Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Building Information Modeling (BIM) software have replaced the usage of pens, pencils, and paper in the design process. This paper describes the work required to design a large-scale immersive visit of a district under construction in a suburban area of Greater Paris, France. As part of this real estate project, called LaVallée, we have access to its city information model: all the BIMs of the works to be carried out including roads, terrain, street furniture, fountains, and landscaping. This paper describes all the technical operations necessary for the design of an immersive 3D model with a high level of detail of the neighborhood with its surroundings. The objective of this technical report was to provide practitioners with feedback on such an achievement based on industrial-level data. The development of the city model begins with the registration of all the BIMs from different firms in a common Geographic Information System: this gives the opportunity to confront the operational requirement of a construction phase and the actual current practice of architecture firms. A first prototype was developed using the archviz tool TwinMotion. In order to increase the realism of the model, we describe the creation of a pipeline in Unreal Engine with the automated tasks of material and mesh replacement and the lighting and landscape configuration. The main contribution of this work is to give relevant experience on building such a large-scale model, with the Python script when possible, as well as the necessary manual steps. It is a valuable contribution to the making of large-scale immersive visits with a high level of detail and their requirements.

Automated Semantic Segmentation of Indoor Point Clouds from Close-Range Images with Three-Dimensional Deep Learning

The creation of building information models requires acquiring real building conditions. The generation of a three-dimensional (3D) model from 3D point clouds involves classification, outline extraction, and boundary regularization for semantic segmentation. The number of 3D point clouds generated using close-range images is smaller and tends to be unevenly distributed, which is not conducive to automated modeling processing. In this paper, we propose an efficient solution for the semantic segmentation of indoor point clouds from close-range images. A 3D deep learning framework that achieves better results is further proposed. A dynamic graph convolutional neural network (DGCNN) 3D deep learning method is used in this study. This method was selected to learn point cloud semantic features. Moreover, more efficient operations can be designed to build a module for extracting point cloud features such that the problem of inadequate beam and column classification can be resolved. First, DGCNN is applied to learn and classify the indoor point cloud into five categories: columns, beams, walls, floors, and ceilings. Then, the proposed semantic segmentation and modeling method is utilized to obtain the geometric parameters of each object to be integrated into building information modeling software. The experimental results show that the overall accuracy rates of the three experimental sections of Area_1 in the Stanford 3D semantic dataset test results are 86.9%, 97.4%, and 92.5%. The segmentation accuracy of corridor 2F in a civil engineering building is 94.2%. In comparing the length with the actual on-site measurement, the root mean square error is found to be ±0.03 m. The proposed method is demonstrated to be capable of automatic semantic segmentation from 3D point clouds with indoor close-range images.
