Information-based quality management in reverse logistics supply chain

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explore the synergies among reverse logistics supply chain (RLSC), quality management (QM) and information management (IM) concepts to enhance the effectiveness of demolition waste management (DWM) practices.Design/methodology/approachA systematic literature review was conducted using 70 articles published between the years of 2006 and 2017, which were subjected to descriptive and thematic analysis.FindingsThe descriptive analysis established that the RLSC concept was dealt within the majority of the publications (61 per cent), followed by concepts related to quality in RLSC (24 per cent). Only 14 per cent of the articles were based on IM concepts related to RLSC. Quality and information are interrelated in the effective implementation of RLSC. The thematic analysis demonstrated that there is a need for using quality parameters in a regulatory environment in an information-based environment. Based on the findings, future research directions were developed.Research limitations/implicationsThe study encourages researchers to identify novel directions by combining these three concepts. The study developed a future research agenda regarding use of building information modelling (BIM) for existing buildings under novel technologies; analysis of secondary market demand and supply; and assessment of cost and safety management with quality in a BIM-enabled environment.Practical implicationsThe practical implications include the application of sustainable management principles based on stakeholders and the regulatory environment.Originality/valueIntegration of the three concepts is an emerging area. This integration developed a robust approach to achieve QM in RLSC operations under a sound information flow enabling the optimisation of DWM.

The Importance of Information Management in the Context of Industry 4.0: Evidence from the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Forbes Diamonds

Currently, the role of information and of the tools facilitating its acquisition and processing is so significant that, in the economic nomenclature, there are already such concepts as an information civilization or information society. The aftermath of this state of affairs is the commercial breakthrough consisting of the enterprise’s success on the intellectual capital rather than the material one. This article aims to show the outline of the information management process and to determine how its components are used in companies. The first part of the paper is devoted to the description of information management concepts in enterprises and the functioning of organizational information systems. The second part of the study includes the results of original research carried out using the Computer-Assisted Web Interview (CAWI) method on the 70 Kuyavian-Pomeranian enterprises counted among the Forbes Diamonds 2018. An analysis of the obtained results indicates that the level of diversity of methods and frequencies of information channels used depends on the size of the entity, its capital structure, and the industry in which they operate. The primary sources of information for the surveyed companies are customers and competitors. The respondents agree that a well-functioning enterprise information system facilitates making decisions in the company and improves internal communication. The most frequently implemented development strategy in the analyzed companies is the market development strategy.

GIS Based Health Information Management through LETL, Multi Criteria Query, Analysis, Visualization

For effective decision making in public health information management(HIM) system, health information availability, accessibility, prompt exchange, GIS linkage, spatiotemporal analysis of diseases is crucial. Lack of cost-effective technical support and information gaps are the main obstacles in HIM. This article defines a generic conceptual process framework for effective HIM that provides cost-effective, portable, easy to use solution. The solution incorporates GIS, Mobile technology, information management concepts, ICD-10 codes, WHO and mHealth standards. The current research is implemented as an android application that facilitates: 1) Patient disease data collection, geospatial mapping of disease data and accumulate a centralized server 2) LETL that supports bulk disease data upload 3) Addresses syntactic and semantic heterogeneity in health data 4) A strong multi-criteria query engine, visualization and spatiotemporal analysis of diseases are designed with a global perspective to be used across the globe.

Інформаційні технології ідентифікації та діагностики рівня концентрації шкідливих викидів техногенних систем в природнє середовище з використанням лазерних 3D-концентратомірів

На сучасному етапі розвиток технологій виробництва, а відповідно і шкідливі викиди продуктів технологічного процесу, зріс до такого рівня, що впливає на стан екосистем як локального, так глобального характеру, що призводить до зміни клімату, породження екологічних катастроф із тяжкими наслідками для соціальної інфраструктури. Відповідно, проблема ідентифікації та діагностики джерел забруднень різної фізико-хімічної та енергетичної структури є надалі актуальною. Проведено аналіз літературних джерел, у яких розглянуто проблему екомоніторингу за період 1980-2017 рр. і викладено результати досліджень та історію катастроф за останні 100 років. Обґрунтовано методи лабораторних досліджень, вимірювальні засоби та інструментарій, державні нормативи, міжнародні програми екологічної безпеки, що підтверджує актуальність дослідження. Сформульовано завдання дослідження, обґрунтовано методи створення комплексних систем екомоніторингу на підставі інформаційних і системних технологій і інформаційно-ресурсної концепції управління та прийняття рішень для мінімізації шкідливих викидів в атмосферу. Проведено аналіз структури джерел забруднень, які породжуються енергоактивними техногенними системами з ієрархічною структурою організації технологічного процесу. Розглянуто структуру енергоактивної техногенної системи на прикладі енергоблоку ТЕС. Проведено аналіз режимів функціонування енергоактивного об'єкта на технологічному рівні термодинамічних енергетичних перетворень, визначено критичні стани. На підставі літературних і технічних даних побудовано таблиці, які характеризують властивості палива (вугілля), хімічну структуру продуктів згорання і їх викиди в атмосферу й екосередовище (воду і ґрунти).

A strategic use of technology: case of Vodafone Egypt

Case overview The case examines the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in one of Egypt’s top mobile service providers, through closely analyzing their systems, the way they work and how technology could be optimized to provide greater benefit and value to support an organization’s business goals. The main objective of the case was to identify business problems that information systems have managed to solve as well as grab a potential opportunity that the organization can or have captured. The main contribution of this case is to emphasize and provide real case application on information management concepts and theories related to Information Systems Alignment (IS Alignment), business value from IS adoption, IS implementation issues and information and process integration. Expected learning outcomes This case was written to present a practical example about the strategic use of ICT within a specific organizational context. It enables students to apply some theoretical concepts studied in information management courses (such as IS alignment – or strategic alignment –, IS assessment and IS implementation) on a real-case study. In particular, teaching this case aims to realize a number of learning objectives: understand telecom industry and acquire an overview about its environment and the challenges it faces in general and within a developing context in particular; identify the different technologies used by telecom companies; develop a business strategy based on a thorough analysis of an organization’s internal business operations as well as its external environment; and learn how to align IT use with organizational strategies and analyze critically both its tangible and intangible added values. Functional requirements for a future farm management information system

As a subsequent step of the conceptual modelling and the information modelling involving the specification of the knowledge content of the decision processes and the involved data imbedded in the information entities, a derivation of the functional requirements was carried out to support and guide the selection of the technological infrastructure of a dedicated farm management information system (FMIS). The study employed the core-task analysis (CTA) method involving a combination of science-based modelling, practice-based modelling, and integrated information modelling. The “process” entities of the information flow model which represent the usage processes of the information, and of the “information” entities which represent the data elements were identified for the specific case of fertilising. This identification of the usage processes as well as the associated data elements showed the complexity of the decision making process within the domain of field operations. In a fully structured and formalised information flow decomposition, many actors are required to deliver information to the decision processes in order to fully emulate the tacit knowledge that the farmer are currently using. Especially, the concept of assisting services has to evolve in order to sustain the need of more automated decision processes in the future. New information management concepts and designs mean that farmers have to be ready to adopt new working habits and perhaps also undergo further training.

Understanding the design of information technologies for knowledge management in organizations: a pragmatic perspective

Abstract. Researchers report mixed findings on the successful application of information technologies (IT) for knowledge management (KM). The primary difficulty is argued to be the use of information management techniques and concepts to design and develop KM Tools. Also problematic is the existence of a multiplicity of KM technologies, the application and use of which differs across organizations. This paper argues that these problems stem, in part, from the information system field’s over‐reliance on design concepts from the functionalist paradigm. Hence, our contention that alternative perspectives, which bring into focus issues of ontology and epistemology, need to be brought to bear in order to understand the challenges involved in the design and deployment of IT artefacts in knowledge management systems (KMS). The philosophy of technology, with its emphasis on the primacy of praxis, and which incorporates ontological and epistemological concepts from phenomenology and hermeneutics, is applied to the findings of a participative action research study to illustrate how social actors interpret and understand worldly phenomena and subsequently share their knowledge of the life‐world using IT. The outcome of this marriage of situated practical theory and philosophy is a set of design principles to guide the development of a core KM Tool for KMS.

INFORMATION MANAGEMENT IN SOCIO-ECONOMIC SYSTEMS: ETHICAL ASPECTS

this paper considers problems of information management ethics and any influences of information control systems on the global stability. A new formalized approach to study these problems is suggested. A range of positive and negative factors of information management is discussed. Suggested definitions allow developing of an axiomatic construction of information management concepts in social and economic systems. This article also suggests an opportunity to study an information management influence on social relations, including ethical relations from the humanization point of view on the global world tendencies of development.

Information Management in a Collaborative Multiactor Environment: The COMMIT Approach

To support collaborative engineering, it is important not only to share information, but also to manage that information in a manner that actively promotes integration. This paper describes the central models underlying the COMMIT (construction modeling and methodologies for intelligent integration of information) project, which is defining mechanisms to handle a number of issues relating to the management of information to support decision-making in collaborative projects. Examples are given to illustrate the implementation of the COMMIT information management concepts. The project is being carried out in consultation with a well-established steering group comprising standardization bodies, industries, and researchers. The COMMIT project is supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, United Kingdom.

Increasing the potential of special libraries in countries in transition

The paper describes the efforts made in recent years to promote the concepts of information management, information policy and information strategy in order to help special libraries and information and documentation services in countries in transition in reinforcing their missions and roles. Part One emphasizes the relevance of those concepts in the specific situation resulting from the political, economic and organizational changes brought by the transition to a market economy. In Part Two the results of three surveys of the work of special libraries in Slovenia from 1992–1995 are analyzed. The results of the survey show that most special libraries and information/documentation services in Slovenia (and we can safely presume that the situation is similar in other countries in transition) currently operate along traditional lines as regards the concept and practice of library and information work. The adoption of strategic planning of information and information management concepts and practices by special libraries promises a way out of the existing, outdated modes of operation.

Automating batch processes

Batch processes are a suitable means of describing milk and dairy processes and therefore suitable applications for the emerging batch control systems standards. These involve powerful recipe handling, scheduling and information management concepts. Recipes are regarded in these standards as transportable objects incorporating formulae, equipment requirements, process procedures and instructions for data acquisition of data for batch histories. The main impact of these recipes will be to permit increased production flexibility as control systems become more functionally oriented and subject to the instructions within recipes. Production scheduling will enable the order of recipes and production to be established according to customer demands. Any supported schedules will have to be dynamic, to allow for severe disruptions. The final concept of information management enables the creation and use of batch reports for quality, internal and external, financial and maintenance functions and analysis within a company. Although these concepts and their interrelationships are reasonably new, control systems are being created that will support software implementing these concepts.
