Early explorations of holistic review in graduate medical education

Background: Graduate Medical Education programs have implemented holistic review to improve the selection process for new residents. Holistic review will have a profound effect on Health Information Professionals (HIPs) with the arrival of medical residents with different backgrounds and needs. The unique experiences and skills of HIPs will position them well for the new realities in medical residency programs. This article traces the historic roots of holistic review. Methods: The authors employed a scoping review to track the historical traces of holistic review in Graduate Medical Education over the formative period of 1999-2019. Results: Medical residency programs over a 20-year period piloted holistic review in the screening, interview, and multiple time periods in the selection process. These ventures reflected a diversity of approaches and creative adaptations from other disciplines such as personnel management, organizational psychology, and active learning forms of education Conclusion: Health information professionals and medical educators will better engage with the newer cohorts of residents when equipped with a history of holistic review.

Making an impact: the new 2024 Medical Library Association research agenda

Objective: This research project sought to identify those subject areas that leaders and researcher members of the Medical Library Association (MLA) determined to be of greatest importance for research investigation. It updates two previous studies conducted in 2008 and 2011. Methods: The project involved a three-step Delphi process aimed at collecting the most important and researchable questions facing the health sciences librarianship profession. First, 495 MLA leaders were asked to submit questions answerable by known research methods. Submitted questions could not exceed 50 words in length. There were 130 viable, unique questions submitted by MLA leaders. Second, the authors asked 200 eligible MLA-member researchers to select the five (5) most important and answerable questions from the list of 130 questions. Third, the same 130 MLA leaders who initially submitted questions were asked to select their top five (5) most important and answerable questions from the 36 top-ranked questions identified by the researchers. Results: The final 15 questions resulting from the three phases of the study will serve as the next priorities of the MLA Research Agenda. The authors will be facilitating the organization of teams of volunteers wishing to conduct research studies related to these identified top 15 research questions. Conclusion: The new 2024 MLA Research Agenda will enable the health information professions to allocate scarce resources toward high-yield research studies. The Agenda could be used by journal editors and annual meeting organizers to prioritize submissions for research communications. The Agenda will provide aspiring researchers with some starting points and justification for pursuing research projects on these questions.

Extracting Fruit Disease Knowledge from Research Papers Based on Large Language Models and Prompt Engineering

In China, fruit tree diseases are a significant threat to the development of the fruit tree industry, and knowledge about fruit tree diseases is the most needed professional knowledge for fruit farmers and other practitioners in the fruit tree industry. Research papers are the primary sources of professional knowledge that represent the cutting-edge progress in fruit disease research. Traditional knowledge engineering methods for knowledge acquisition require extensive and cumbersome preparatory work, and they demand a high level of professional background and information technology skills from the handlers. This paper, from the perspective of fruit tree industry knowledge dissemination, aims at users such as fruit farmers, fruit tree experts, fruit tree knowledge communicators, and information gatherers. It proposes a fast, cost-effective, and low-technical-barrier method for extracting fruit tree disease knowledge from research paper abstracts—K-Extract, based on large language models (LLMs) and prompt engineering. Under zero-shot conditions, K-Extract utilizes conversational LLMs to automate the extraction of fruit tree disease knowledge. The K-Extract method has constructed a comprehensive classification system for fruit tree diseases and, through a series of optimized prompt questions, effectively overcomes the deficiencies of LLM models in providing factual accuracy. This paper tests multiple LLM models available in the Chinese market, and the results show that K-Extract can seamlessly integrate with any conversational LLM model, with the DeepSeek model and the Kimi model performing particularly well. The experimental results indicate that LLM models have a high accuracy rate in handling judgment tasks and simple knowledge Q&A tasks. The K-Extract method is simple, efficient, and accurate, and can serve as a convenient tool for knowledge extraction in the agricultural field.

The prevalence of self-neglect among older adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

To quantitatively pool the overall prevalence of self-neglect in older adults and provide evidence-based information for healthcare professionals to develop preventive measures. Systematically and thoroughly searched ten databases from inception to September 1, 2024 and we pooled the prevalence of self-neglect in older adults using a random-effects model based on the Stata 15.0 software. In our meta-analysis, 21 studies were included, and the estimated prevalence rate of self-neglect among older adults was 27% (95% CI: 23%-30%). We found that the incidence of self-neglect was higher in males, aged 80 years, developing countries, hospitals, and using the Elder Self-Neglect Questionnaire assessment tool. Self-neglect is a common and underestimated phenomenon in older adults, and the prevalence rate of self-neglect is high. Several epidemiological characteristics such as gender, age, countries, settings, and definition criteria were associated with its prevalence. It deserves early screening and targeted intervention by using a globally accepted definition of self-neglect to prevent older adults from self-neglect. Our study can provide clinical evidence for nursing staff and healthcare professionals to identify high-risk groups of self-neglect in older adults.

The knowledge, experience, and awareness of professionals working with older adults on the auditory-cognitive interactions.

Hearing loss is a commonly occurring condition with dementia. Research already presented a theoretical framework for the auditory-cognitive interactions, though it is still unclear if and how professionals beyond audiologists act upon this interactions in clinical practice. An online 64-item questionnaire was developed and evaluated respondents' work setting as well as their knowledge, experience, and awareness regarding hearing loss, cognitive decline, and the auditory-cognitive link. The questionnaire was sent to Dutch professionals working with older adults. Respondents were surveyed from May to September 2022. Two hundred and six non-physicians with a mean work experience of 16 years (range: 6 months - 42 years) and 25 physicians with a mean work experience of 13 years (range: 8 months - 42 years) filled in the entire questionnaire. There was a prevailing tendency to treat hearing and cognitive impairment as distinct entities, overlooking their coexistence and interactions. Results also showed a deficiency in assessing the hearing and cognitive status of older adults, with most relying on the older adult's self-report or indirect (non)verbal cues. Those strategies are strongly dependent on the professional's awareness and knowledge which were, especially for the hearing-related aspects, considered limited. For example, effortful listening was barely reported by the respondents as an important hearing-related complaint. Last, communication strategies fall short, with professionals adapting general approaches but lacking specificity. Specific information for professionals beyond audiologists regarding the auditory-cognitive interactions as well as guidelines how to acted upon in clinical practice are needed to optimise person-centered care for older adults.

A Call to Serve: Public Librarians and Social Change

Objective. Social change involves events affecting social, cultural, economic, political, and geographical contexts. Among others, public librarians play a crucial role in mediating this change by promoting literacy, reading, and combating misinformation. With this in mind, understanding the public librarians’ lived experiences and insights can further facilitate social change and enhance the librarianship field. The study aims to answer the question, of how public librarians understand and affect social change, based on the lived experiences of Filipino public librarians as information professionals. Methods. The Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach was used and a semi-structured interview was conducted to determine the perceptions of two Filipino public librarians on social change. Results. The paper showed that public librarians are motivated by their passion for community service. They also believe that education plays a role in social advancement and emphasized the importance of teaching literacy skills and providing learning resources to children. Conclusions. The paper concludes that these librarians perceive social change as helping people through their advocacies, information services, and library programs.

Design and implementation of a novel electronic health records (EHR) system for knowledge sharing at an international medical outreach program field clinic

A prominent medical school in the Southeast United States conducts an active International Medical Outreach Program (IMOP) at multiple international locations. These medical outreach trips provide medical services to those who do not have access to or limited access to health care. Medical students who volunteer to participate in these trips welcome the experiential education experiences. This developmental research study focuses on three IMOP trips to San Cristóbal, Galápagos Islands (Ecuador). Traditional approaches in the dissemination of clinical knowledge, skills, and confidence building for medical students rely on classroom training. In the IMOP experiential trips, knowledge sharing was supported by oral communication with senior clinicians and patients, as well as the transition from a paper-based to a novel custom-built Electronic Health Record (EHR) system. Paper-based record systems are cluttered with issues; some include illegible handwriting and missing or incomplete data. A team of health informatics professionals from the university transitioned the paper-based forms to a novel digitalized EHR system. The new novel digitalized EHR system resolved many of the paper-based issues and significantly improved knowledge dissemination among medical students, patients, and clinicians, furthering skills enhancement as well as efficiencies in resource coordination, however, some adjustments in clinical documentation procedures were needed to reduce the volume of missing data entries during the implementation, where a total of 848 adult and pediatric patients were treated over the three IMOP trips documented in this research. This digitalized EHR system enabled a more efficient transfer of knowledge to medical students.

Knowledge, Barriers, and Future Directions of Vestibular Rehabilitation Practice in Neurorehabilitation: An Italian Survey.

Background/Objectives: Vestibular rehabilitation, an evidence-based physical therapy approach, plays a crucial role in managing and recovering from gaze and balance disorders, including those of central origin. This study, targeted at the community of Italian healthcare practitioners, is vital in understanding the application of vestibular rehabilitation in neurological disorders and in identifying knowledge gaps, barriers, and future directions. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study directed at healthcare professionals involved in neurorehabilitation in Italy. The survey consisted of 29 items grouped in 4 sections, which was estimated to take approximately 10 min to complete. The questions covered socio-demographic information, professional information, clinical practice, and future perspectives on vestibular rehabilitation. Results: Out of the 435 respondents, 290 completed the survey. Most of the respondents reported either no (32.87%) or little (42.91%) experience in vestibular rehabilitation. However, most participants (72.98%) recognized the importance of vestibular rehabilitation in treating neurological disorders. The most common condition treated was stroke (46.39%), while balance training (52.69%) and visual input exercises (26.35%) were the two most frequently used strategies. The main barriers to implementing vestibular rehabilitation in clinical practice were equipment cost and insufficient skills. Conclusions: Vestibular physical therapy is a promising complementary approach in neurorehabilitation. However, the study reveals a perceived lack of basic training in vestibular assessment and therapy. This suggests that more efforts are needed to bridge this knowledge gap and make necessary equipment more accessible.

Utilizing Multi-Criteria Decision-Making Techniques in the Selection of Electric Vehicles: An Analysis for the Turkish Electric Vehicle Market

Global warming and climate change are among the biggest problems of our time. The rapid depletion of fossil fuels and the harmful effects of internal combustion engines on the environment are increasing the interest in electric vehicles. These vehicles emit less carbon emissions than gasoline and diesel vehicles, reducing the emission of harmful gases such as greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The use of electric vehicles provides significant benefits for human health and environmental health. The sale of electric vehicles in Turkey is very important in terms of sustainability and economy. This study aims to help rank the alternatives by using multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods in the selection of the 11 most preferred electric vehicles in Turkey. Various criteria such as DC fast charging time, power (kW), range, price, battery capacity, electricity consumption (kWh) and number of services were considered in the study. Following the criteria provided by the MEREC weighting method, four different decision-making methods such as TOPSIS, PROMETHEE, MOORA and WASPAS were applied and the outcomes were combined with the COPELAND approach to obtain a final ranking. The findings show that the X5 vehicle received the highest score according to the COPELAND method and that this vehicle ranked high in other methods as well, and its overall performance was remarkable. The X11 and X4 vehicles stand out as the second and third best alternatives, respectively. As a result of the study, it was concluded that the most important criterion among the 7 criteria is “charging time” and the least important criterion is “electricity consumption”.The results obtained from the COPELAND method are presented in a clear and understandable way. With this feature, decision makers can easily understand the comparisons between alternatives. These results help consumers considering purchasing an electric vehicle to determine which vehicles are more suitable, while also providing useful information for professionals in the industry to make strategic decisions.

Bringing Order to Chaos Ethically: “Cataloging Code of Ethics” and Critical Cataloging

Goal: The goal of this paper is to address the ethics in cataloging and the concept of critical cataloging, as a sub-movement of critical librarianship, as well as to highlight the intersection of ethics with critical in cataloging. It also provides an overview of the most relevant academic papers, articles, and documents in this field, with a special focus on the Cataloging Code of Ethics, the first comprehensive, collaborative, and internationally accepted Code specific to the profession. This code was published in 2021 by the Cataloging Ethics Steering Committee (CESC), which includes representatives from three library associations from three different countries: the American Library Association (ALA), the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP), and the Canadian Federation of Library Associations (CFLA-FCAB). Approach/methodology/design: Using content analysis, this paper presents relevant research on ethical cataloging. Through the methods of comparison, analysis, and synthesis, an inductive approach is used to establish a theoretical framework for the subject of the research. Results: The results show that, particularly in the last two decades, this topic has gained significant attention within the cataloging community. Catalogers, aware of their role in building information architecture, have begun to critically reflect on their profession and articulate the need for a document that provides guidelines for ethical organization of metadata. Social relevance: The research advocates that the power to organize knowledge and the power to name, held by catalogers, must be balanced with professional ethics. A critical approach to the profession and the Cataloging Code of Ethics can aid in this process, which could have positive implications for society as a whole. Originality/value: The originality of this paper lies in its critical examination of a cataloging trend that has not yet been discussed in our region.

OPTIMIZING ICT TOOLS FOR DISSEMINATION OF COVID19- INFORMATION BY LIBRARIANS IN NIGERIAN ACADEMIC LIBRARIES

Information Communication Technology tools have been considered indispensable tools for successful delivery of library services especially in the COVID 19 global pandemic. This study answers three research questions about ICT tools as it is applicable to librarians for dissemination of information during Covid-19 era. First, how often do information professionals use ICT tools for dissemination of covid-19? Second, what are the ICT tools used for dissemination of covid-19 information, third, what benefits do information professionals’ derive from usage of ICT tools as well as challenges they encounter in getting information about covid-19 across to their patrons using ICT tools ?. Data were obtained in both quantitative and qualitative formats using one hundred and forty-four librarians as respondents. Total enumeration sampling technique was adopted because the population was minimal. Findings of the study revealed that; ICT tools are being used regularly by librarians for dissemination of covid-19 information, Videoconferencing, WhatsApp, Teleconferencing, Web-based Learning Applications, LinkedIn, Instagram , Software programmes and Facebook were identified as the ICT tools being used by librarians in Nigerian academic libraries for dissemination of covid-19 information, ICT tools are useful and beneficial to librarians as; it facilitates easy participation and engagement of library users in discussions pertaining to covid-19 which in turn curbs the spread of the virus, it facilitates easy education of students about the virus itself and to teach basic hygiene, with ICT tools, Covid 19 information is easily shared between librarians and their users, it also brings about reduction in the barrier of social distancing. The study also found epileptic power supply, poor infrastructure, inadequate funding, low band - with and lack of search skills as the major impediments to successful usage of ICT tools for dissemination of covid-19 information. Thus, it was recommended that libraries across Nigeria should prioritize training of their staff on the required digital skills they need to be able to cope in this advanced technology era.

Keratodermas in the practice of a family doctor

Keratodermas are a heterogeneous group of dermatological diseases characterized by thickening of the stratum corneum of the epidermis on the palms and soles. This article discusses the main forms of keratodermas, their hereditary characteristics, clinical manifestations, methods of diagnosis and treatment, as well as important aspects of patient monitoring. Keratoderma is divided into diffuse and focal forms, each of which has its own clinical characteristics and types of inheritance (autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive). In particular, diseases such as Unna-Thost keratoderma, Meleda disease, and Papillon — Lefèvre syndrome are mentioned. The main symptoms and morphological changes of the skin in various forms of keratoderma, as well as diagnostic methods, including clinical studies and histology, are described. Treatment of keratoderma is based on the use of retinol preparations and keratolytic agents; the need for an individual approach depending on the form of the disease is emphasized. The criterion for the effectiveness of treatment is a significant reduction in the severity of clinical manifestations. Attention is paid to side effects and complications associated with therapy, as well as the importance of consultation with specialists to prevent secondary diseases such as periodontal disease. Keratoderma is a complex disease that requires an integrated approach to diagnosis and treatment. The prognosis for patients is most often unfavorable, and complete cure is impossible. It is necessary to ensure careful monitoring of the patient's health status and evaluate the efficacy of the treatment used to reduce clinical manifestations. The text provides relevant information for dermatologists and other medical professionals involved in the diagnosis and treatment of skin diseases.

Development and validation of the Continuing Professional Development Scale: A knowledge transfer perspective

Purpose: Professional groups and bodies for librarians and information professionals such as the Continuing Professional Development and Workplace Learning (CPDWL) Section of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) strongly encourage continuing professional development. The purpose of this study is to develop and validate a scale for measuring the effectiveness of continuing professional development (CPD) and knowledge transfer (KT) among information professionals. The study identifies four factors (CPD purposes, forms of CPD, effectiveness of CPD and KT, and factors affecting KT during CPD) to measure the effectiveness of CDP and KT practices. Design: The pilot instrument, based on the literature, was empirically validated by collecting data from 220 library professionals having at least five years of professional experience. Findings: The construct validity of the scale was verified through exploratory factor analysis (EFA). The scale reliability was further calculated through the Cronbach's alpha internal reliability coefficient. Consequently, a valid and reliable 72-item scale was developed to measure the effectiveness of CPD and KT among information professionals.

Shaping the Future: A Research Agenda for U.K. Libraries

Objective – This study explored current and future trends in librarianship within the U.K. library and information profession, intending to highlight the most critical for future evidence based research. Research outcomes should resonate across the wider sector and be an indicative stepping stone to collaborative research endeavours by members of the profession at a time when funding is tight, and staff availability is in short supply. Methods – A qualitative Delphi consensus method was chosen for the research, adapted from Paul’s (2008) modified Delphi card-sorting model. Contributions from conference programs and 31 individual experts from the U.K. library and information profession contributed to the generation of current themes and trends impacting their library environments. Data were analyzed by the experts in an incremental manner following the adapted methodology, and consensus was achieved through the process. Results – The findings of the research indicated that there were five significant trends and areas of concern which are impacting our libraries at all levels. These naturally include pressing current concerns such as the impact of artificial intelligence (AI), critical librarianship, and censorship/book banning. Library spaces remain a significant issue for the wider sector. Conclusion – The adapted modified Delphi card-sorting method with three distinct sections to the research proved especially valuable in a study where there were many different approaches to librarianship. The use of conference data to seed the initial set of themes has been shown to be unusual and rarely used in this way before. The process of achieving and reaching consensus illustrated the need for the profession as a whole to work more closely together. The outcome of the consensus research should now be taken forward collaboratively by the library profession, with space and training given to staff across all sectors and grades to engage in evidence based research for the benefit of all.

The Skills of Information Professionals for the Analysis and Organization of Data. Conceptual Proposal and Application of OpenAI in Job Advertisements on the Web

This study explores the evolving roles of library and information professionals (IPs) in data analysis and organization, particularly within interdisciplinary teams. It builds on the premise that data is pivotal for strategic business and institutional management, with IPs contributing through their expertise in information and communication technologies (ICTs), mediation with users, and mastery of taxonomies and semantic organizational structures (SOCs). The study examines job advertisements to determine the skills, experience, and training employers seek in IPs for data-centric roles. A total of 84 international job postings from platforms such as ALAJobLIST, LinkedIn, and Glassdoor were analyzed. The postings were XML-tagged to identify descriptions, competencies, and requirements. Using OpenAI tools, keywords were extracted, standardized, and grouped into thematic clusters and macro-clusters for analysis. The findings reveal that required skills span eight macro-clusters: business management; data management; information organization; data analysis and statistics; programming; web technologies; analytical creativity; and domain-specific expertise. IPs are valued for their technical and technological skills, particularly in navigating and applying standards for data description, visualization, and communication. Conclusions highlight that while IPs possess strong foundational skills, additional training in statistics and analysis platforms is critical to fully meet employer demands. Employers trust IPs for their ability to handle data-centric roles in competitive environments, emphasizing the importance of communication, leadership, and customer-oriented skills. The study underscores the need to enhance LIS curricula to better integrate advanced statistical training and entrepreneurial competencies. This research emphasizes the growing recognition of IPs’ contributions to data analysis and organization, underscoring their essential role in addressing the complexities of interdisciplinary data-driven projects

Feeding the Insatiable Beast

This exploratory essay foregrounds the extraction and enclosure cycle between education technology (ed-tech) vendors and public academic special collections and archives departments. Education technology vendors, subsidiaries of academic publishers, often approach special collections libraries and archives with offers to digitize collections through services that McLaughlin et al. (2023) describe as open wrapping or freemium proposals. Since there seems to be no turning back, information professionals in public academic settings should, among other solutions, encourage decision-makers to negotiate preservation and conservation of physical archival materials. Drawing from the literature on commons practices, this essay introduces the concept of reciprocal relations to agreements between cultural heritage institutions and ed-tech companies. A reciprocal approach would disrupt the extraction and enclosure cycle and highlights the professional’s role as a steward of cultural heritage collections with an understanding that digitization is not preservation. Further, it would compel private sector companies to invest in the public sector instead of simply extracting public resources for profit.

Trends in health librarianship topics presented at four UK-based conferences between 2017 and 2022: A thematic analysis.

Although thematic analysis of health librarianship (HL) presentations at conferences in the USA exists, no similar research has been reported focused on HL at UK conferences. To determine trends in HL conference presentations from 2017 to 2022 at three UK-based HL conferences and the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) conferences. Thematic analysis of conference programmes obtained from websites, the Internet Archive Wayback Machine and conference organisers. A total of 226 HL-related conference presentations were identified across all the examined conference programmes. Eight themes emerged: being a Healthcare Librarian; Digital Working; Finding the Evidence; Generating Research; Strategic Library Management; Literacies; Other; and Using the Evidence. 'Being a Healthcare Librarian' (n = 54) and 'Strategic Library Management' (n = 53) were the most prominent cross-conference themes. Presentations at HL-specific conferences provide a wider range of themes than CILIP conferences, with 'Being a Healthcare Librarian' absent from CILIP conferences but 'Literacies' appearing in similar numbers at both. Differences in conference formats and the COVID-19 pandemic likely influenced presentation numbers. HL conference themes are not directly reflected in CILIP conferences. NHS Knowledge and Library Services staff should be encouraged to undertake and disseminate original research, creating a UK evidence base for healthcare librarianship.

Government document citations in top nursing journals: A bibliometric analysis.

Citation analysis studies the use of citations found in various types of publications, including the use of government information, and can provide insight into research utilisation in nursing literature. Using citation analysis, this study examines the use, prevalence and jurisdiction of government information use among seven nursing research journals based on ranking criteria. Government information citations were identified across three types of articles: editorials, reviews and research articles. Nearly two-thirds of the articles in this study cite some form of government information, and the average percentage of government citations is 5.38 of all citations. Government information was identified from national governments, inter-governmental organizations and state and regional governments. Understanding the use, prevalence and jurisdiction of government information informs health information professionals allowing them to engage with nursing students and researchers about this important type of information and the types of articles that use government information. Nursing researchers frequently cite government information in their work. This has implications for librarians, nursing researchers and health professionals. Understanding the intersection of government information and nursing research should inform future practice in evidence-based nursing research and nursing education.

Topics and Trends of Health Informatics Education Research: Scientometric Analysis.

Academic and educational institutions are making significant contributions toward training health informatics professionals. As research in health informatics education (HIE) continues to grow, it is useful to have a clearer understanding of this research field. This study aims to comprehensively explore the research topics and trends of HIE from 2014 to 2023. Specifically, it aims to explore (1) the trends of annual articles, (2) the prolific countries/regions, institutions, and publication sources, (3) the scientific collaborations of countries/regions and institutions, and (4) the major research themes and their developmental tendencies. Using publications in Web of Science Core Collection, a scientometric analysis of 575 articles related to the field of HIE was conducted. The structural topic model was used to identify topics discussed in the literature and to reveal the topic structure and evolutionary trends of HIE research. Research interest in HIE has clearly increased from 2014 to 2023, and is continually expanding. The United States was found to be the most prolific country in this field. Harvard University was found to be the leading institution with the highest publication productivity. Journal of Medical Internet Research, Journal of The American Medical Informatics Association, and Applied Clinical Informatics were the top 3 journals with the highest articles in this field. Countries/regions and institutions having higher levels of international collaboration were more impactful. Research on HIE could be modeled into 7 topics related to the following areas: clinical (130/575, 22.6%), mobile application (123/575, 21.4%), consumer (99/575, 17.2%), teaching (61/575, 10.6%), public health (56/575, 9.7%), discipline (55/575, 9.6%), and nursing (51/575, 8.9%). The results clearly indicate the unique foci for each year, depicting the process of development for health informatics research. This is believed to be the first scientometric analysis exploring the research topics and trends in HIE. This study provides useful insights and implications, and the findings could be used as a guide for HIE contributors.
