Impact of technological progress on carbon emissions in different country income groups

This study examines the complex relationship between carbon emissions and technological progress in a sample of 60 countries divided into four income groups for the period 1989–2018. For robustness purposes and due to the broad definition of technology, we use six different proxies to represent technology: Information and telecommunication technology (ICT), patents, public R&D expenditure, Total factor of productivity (TFP), science and technology publications. After applying the fixed-effect method with Driscoll and Kraay standard errors, ICT variables appear to be good instruments for carbon reduction in the full sample. However, R&D expenditure and patents do not significantly impact carbon emissions. TFP increases carbon emissions, while science and technology publications are negatively related to carbon emissions. The analysis shows mixed results for the various country income groups and all indicators.

The effect of servant leadership on innovative work behavior and employee knowledge sharing in the Latvian ICT sector

PurposeThis study aims to peruse the underlying effect of servant leadership (SL) on innovative work behavior (IWB) and employee knowledge sharing behavior (KSB), directly and through the mediating effect of job autonomy (JA), by using autonomous psychological needs of self-determination theory and embracing Hofstede's framework in information and telecommunication technology (ICT) companies in Latvia.Design/methodology/approachA quantitative analysis of data from 271 employees and managers in Latvian ICT companies was used by applying structural equation modeling.FindingsThe result discloses that SL can promote IWB and KSB directly and through mediating effects of JA.Research limitations/implicationsThe research is constricted by geography and sample data representation from a specific sector. Hence, future studies can determine the gender effects, carry out more preventive measures to avoid common method bias between constructs, measure antecedents and the mediator before outcomes and examine JA as a moderator.Practical implicationsThe findings demonstrate that the Latvian ICT sector should recruit managers with SL potentials, train and equip managers with the required resources to implement SL practices properly and integrate JA across the organization to increase the manifestation of IWB and KSB.Originality/valueThis paper is the first to examine JA as the underlying process through which SL’s effects on IWB and KSB are explained in an individualistic country.

Does information and communication technology affect CO2 mitigation under the pathway of sustainable development during the mode of globalization?

AbstractThe rapid developments of globalization promote interaction among countries and people around the globe through the fast mode of information and telecommunication technology (ICT). ICT development also contributes to economic growth through various channels, but it may influence the environment on the other hand. Considering this concern, the present study focuses on examining the relationship between ICT developments and carbon emissions through the globalization channel. The study employs robust panel data estimation methods, continuously updated fully modified, and continuously updated bias corrected estimators, for the data set of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS) economies spanning from 1990 to 2015. Findings of the study are robust against heteroskedasticity, endogeneity, and cross‐sectional dependence issues. The robust panel data estimators reveal that ICT has a favourable effect on carbon emissions in BRICS countries. Also, globalization leads to environmental pollution by contributing to an increase in CO2 emissions. These findings provide new insights to the policymakers in combatting environmental challenges.

Examining the Impact of Dubai Smart Government Characteristics on User Satisfaction

Information and telecommunication technology (ICT) are today practiced in various public sectors and are considered as a cost-effective and convenient means to encourage openness, transparency, and to reduce corruption. It has also put innovation and ICT more than ever at the heart of smart development. Presently, this phenomenon has also been adopted by governments so as to cope with various problems created by increasing urban populations in their countries. The main objective of this study is to examine the influence of Dubai smart government characteristics on the user satisfaction. Online survey was used to collect data for this study, the sample size was determined as 250 users of Dubai smart government services, who are users who got the services from five major strategic or government partners of smart government establishment: Dubai Police, RTA, DEWA, DHA, and Dubai Municipality. PLS (Partial Least Squares) SEM-VB (Structural Equation Modelling-Variance Based) was employed to assess the research model by utilising the software SmartPLS 3.0. This paper adds to the existing literature of smart government characteristics (Information System Quality, Relationship with Public Agencies, Leadership, Accountability and Transparency, and Productivity) and user satisfaction (Usefulness, Awareness, Service Quality, Trust, and Social Influence). The results of this study have the potential to give further insights into Dubai government to improve their users’ satisfaction

CURRENT WASTE GENERATION OF E-WASTE AND CHALLENGES IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES: AN OVERVIEW

The rapid growth of information and telecommunication technology ((ICT) in many developing countries has led to the improvement in the capacity of computers but simultaneously decrease the product lifespan which contribute to increase amount of e-waste. This paper reviews management issues related to electric and electronic waste (e-waste) as well as challenges faced by developing countries particularly China, India, Jordan, Tanzania, Philippines, Korea, Thailand, Brazil and Malaysia. Amongst the issues include awareness of institution and government, overall management and financing problem. From the review in selected developing countries, it can be concluded that the awareness of public towards e-waste management is low. Most consumers were not aware of the proper way to treat e-waste and for government and institution commitments were low as strict and consistent enforcement were lacking. Informal sector plays a major role while low-cost machinery and manual segregation was prominent. Systematic policy and regulation of e-waste management in developing countries needs to be enhanced to achieve best practices in e-waste management. Lack of financial support further exacerbated the challenges in these developing countries, as proper treatment requires a high capital and maintenance costs.

That the Muslim community can not escape from the process of globalization, especially if you want to survive and triumph in the midst of an increasingly competitive world in the present and future. Based on the background, this study aims to examine the Improvement of the Quality of Digital Human Resources in Pondok Pesantren Bidayatul Hidayah Mojogeneng Jatirejo Mojokerto. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The researcher acts as a data collector and as an active instrument in the effort to collect data in the field. To obtain data related to the theme of research, used some data collection techniques as follows: Observation or observation Interview, and Documentation. Data analysis of the results of this study, conducted based on descriptive analysis, as developed by Mile and Huberman. The analysis consists of three interaction analysis paths that are data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawing. From the results of the discussion can be concluded that Pondok Pesantren Bidayatul Hidayah Mojogeneng Jatirejo Mojokerto in order to Improve the Quality of Digital Human Resources do things as follows: 1) Development and Mastery Book Yellow / Salaf. 2) Program of development of basic sciences. Many benefits are felt with this program, including: a. The level of readiness of students to receive lessons is better. b. Ability of students to absorb material faster. c. Student creativity and motivation increase. 3) Development of Foreign Language Ability. 4) Development of Pesantren Through the Utilization of Information and Telecommunication Technology (ICT). 5) Improvement of the role of Organization of Santri / Santriwati. 6) Increasing Pesantren's Contribution to Community Development

The study explores the linkage between the investment in information and telecommunication technology (ICT) and human capital development on economic transformation in Economic Communities of West African States (ECOWAS). It further examines how investment in ICT and human capital development can transform the economies of ECOWAS members. This study engaged the generalised method of moments (GMM) in achieving its objective. The findings, among others, showed that investment in ICT did not have a statistically significant relationship with human development. Factors responsible for the non-significant impact of investment in telecommunications on human development could be attributed to the relatively low investment in telecommunications accompanied with high cost of acquisition of the technology in ECOWAS and harsh policy environment. Thus, policies such as the enforcement of good institutions, stabilisation of the political and economic variables in ECOWAS economies will encourage investment in telecommunications, which will enhance ICT adoption and human development.

Using TOC to develop U-tourism and to formulate its marketing strategy

The progress of information and telecommunication technology (ICT) has accelerated the arrival of an 'Ubiquitous Society', where information can be received and exchanged anytime and anywhere. The transformation of commerce comes from brick and mortar stores to electronic commerce and to mobile commerce, now we call 'ubiquitous commerce' (U-commerce). U-commerce implies ubiquity, universality, uniqueness and unison, and brings lots of new challenges to marketers. Meanwhile, ICTs also provide new opportunities to tourism industry, and its food and beverage sector. Therefore, this study uses theory of constraint (hereafter TOC) to identify the existing challenges of tourism industry in Taiwan and provide the possible solutions of utilising ICTs properly. Then construct the U-tourism and formulate its corresponding marketing strategies. Hence, the results of this study could be divided into three major parts: 1) identifying tourist's demand and corresponding ICTs by questionnaires; 2) through TOC to map Taiwan's tourism challenges with possible solutions; 3) formulating new marketing strategies for U-tourism with U-space as the infrastructure.

The Extent of Using of Information and Telecommunications Technology (ITT), by the Teachers of Social Studies in Tafila Governorate, and the Obstacles That Hinder Its Usage

This study aimed at investigating the extent of using the applications of information and telecommunications technology (ITT), by the teachers of social studies in Tafila governorate, and obstacles that hinder such usage. To accomplish the goals of the study, an instrument was designed for data collection, verification of confidence and stability. The instrument was distributed over the sample of 129 male and female teachers, by a percentage of 84.7% of the study population. The most important results of the study were, that using applications of information and telecommunication technology by the teachers of social studies in the primary public schools was medium. The obstacles related to the equipment were high, while obstacles related to the technical and administrative aspect, beside the preparation of the teachers were medium. The study found no statistically significant differences at a < 0.05 for using these applications attributed to gender, qualifications and experience of teachers. The researcher recommends the necessity for more efforts to enhance the using of these applications by the teachers of social studies more efficiently, through qualifying teachers to practice better the technological skills, in order to improve the performance of teachers.

The world is not indifferent to the challen-ges of civilization. The traditional Ford’s model of work is eroding. The participation in theprocess of transformation to the service based economy needs to confront and to accept thevarious relationships in the workplace and the new scope of tasks in work. High qualifiedworkers with good professional experience are more and more needed.The conclusions of the research into the students’ views on the modern labor market formedby the knowledge based economy were presented against backdrop of the social and worktransformation sketched above.

The challenge of electronic waste (e-waste) management in developing countries

Information and telecommunications technology (ICT) and computer Internet networking has penetrated nearly every aspect of modern life, and is positively affecting human life even in the most remote areas of the developing countries. The rapid growth in ICT has led to an improvement in the capacity of computers but simultaneously to a decrease in the products lifetime as a result of which increasingly large quantities of waste electrical and electronic equipment (e-waste) are generated annually. ICT development in most developing countries, particularly in Africa, depends more on secondhand or refurbished EEEs most of which are imported without confirmatory testing for functionality. As a result large quantities of e-waste are presently being managed in these countries. The challenges facing the developing countries in e-waste management include: an absence of infrastructure for appropriate waste management, an absence of legislation dealing specifically with e-waste, an absence of any framework for end-of-life (EoL) product take-back or implementation of extended producer responsibility (EPR). This study examines these issues as they relate to practices in developing countries with emphasis on the prevailing situation in Nigeria. Effective management of e-waste in the developing countries demands the implementation of EPR, the establishment of product reuse through remanufacturing and the introduction of efficient recycling facilities. The implementation of a global system for the standardization and certification/labelling of secondhand appliances intended for export to developing countries will be required to control the export of electronic recyclables (e-scarp) in the name of secondhand appliances.

An Empirical Study of the Impact of ICT on College Students' Shopping Behavior

The purpose of this research is to ascertain how the advancement of Information and Telecommunication Technology (ICT) changes people's behavior as well as the demand structure of transportation. In this paper, we focused on the purchasing behavior and shopping-related trips as the derived demand.Firstly, we produced a conceptional framework to model consumers' purchasing behavior, and specifically direct our attention to the transaction costs in shopping, that is, the costs for information gathering and for acquiring goods because they are certainly influenced by newly developed forms of information technology and their applications, such as the Internet, e-mail, and e-commerce.Secondly, for the empirical study, we conducted a questionnaire survey in two locations in Japan: the major metropolis of Tokyo and the smaller regional city of Nagasaki. The survey inquired into selection factors between retail shops and Internet or catalog-order shops. The result of our empirical survey showed that (1) the willingness to pay (WTP) for information gathering costs has a positive effect on individuals' ICT related characteristics, and (2) the WTP for information gathering has a positive effect to non-shop purchasing, while the WTP for acquiring goods affects nonhas a negative effect on non-shop purchasing.

Managing information technologies in the service sector in China: present state and outlook for the 1990s

This paper discusses the role of information and telecommunication technology (ITT) in China's service sector, and the managerial, financial, and organizational factors impinging upon its implementation. The article also describes the current state of ITT in China's service sector, primarily in the banking, hospitality, transportation, and telecommunication industries. The proposed outlook for the 1990s is based on China's approved plans for ITT implementation, current trends in China's service sectors, and the author's own perspective. Finally, the article proposes policy measures to improve the future application of ITT in China's service sectors.

Teaching of Telecommunication-Specific University Course in Cooperation with Partners from Industry

Modern information and telecommunication technology (ICT) is rapidly evolving in time and there is a constant need for specialists, who have good knowledge to meet the industry needs. One way to perform industry specific knowledge transfer form industry to academia is to involve partner's specialist in teaching the courses. The aim of this paper is to introduce an example of course setup in teaching VoIP and IMS technologies for ICT students. We analyze the opportunities and limitations seen in organizing and teaching this course based on our 3-year experience. We also give some suggestions for developing the course when industry interest and support, due to the situation in economy and market, may change in time.
