Application of Information and Communication Technology(ICT) in the Services of Public and Academics Libraries in Pangasinan

The intensifying era of Information communication technology (ICT) really brought great changes, especially in libraries. Both positive and negative effects of the application of such are visible to librarians and to users. Different challenges regarding the application of ICT in libraries are also encountered.Considering the importance of ICT in libraries, the researchers conducted this study to determine the level of application of ICT in the services of public and academic libraries in Pangasinan in order to enhance the access, storage,and process of information and to improve the operation services of these libraries. This study used a descriptive method of research. A descriptive research method is used to describe, as well as explain, or validate some sort of hypothesis or objective when it comes to a specific group of people (McNeill, 2018). The questionnaire was used as the data gathering instrument aided with an interview technique in order to validate the answer. The researchers made use of frequency count, percentage, and mean as statistical tools. Results show that both public and academic libraries have available hardware facilities. Computer servers, workstations, net servers, and printers are 100 percent available in these libraries. Moreover, Online databases are the most available resources for information retrieval. On the other hand, Lack of funds/financial assistance was the most identified challenge by the librarians in the application of ICT. Further, a Pooled mean of 2.86 was rated and interpreted as moderately applied concerning the level of application of ICT in their respective libraries both in technical and reader’s services. Based on the findings of this study, it can be concluded that the application of ICT in the library services of public and academic libraries in Pangasinan is not yet at its highest, but advancing it to its fullest is possible if the school administrators and local government will give and provide their full support on ICT project of libraries.

Performance Analysis of Information & Communication Technology in Library and Information Science

Abstract: There is no doubt that the integration of ICT in the provision of library services can bring great benefits to the entire community and the nation. ICTs, which continue to be a support tool for the provision of up-to-date and timely information and library services, are also essential for sustainable development .This paper is an attempt to examine the critical role that information and communication technology (ICT). How it plays important role in the management and delivery of library services in sustainable development. Despite the wide range of opportunities offered by the advent of ICT, it has been observed that the application of ICT to library services appears inadequate, probably due to several challenges. Using the simple literature search methodology, the paper sought to review the related literature on ICT resources and ICT-based services in libraries, the benefits of ICT and the role of libraries in sustainable development. The document also identified the challenges of using ICT in libraries. Among other things, it was recommended to improve the capacity and level of adoption of ICT by libraries. Perception of Using ICT in Libraries: A Survey of Library Professionals Working in Government Degree Colleges of Kashmir (J&K)-India

The application of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has put a huge impact on Information Industry and has revolutionized the way libraries acquire, process, organise, store and disseminate information. It has also caused a drastic change in different library services making it possible for the libraries to serve their clientele quickly, efficiently and distantly. Thus, in this digitally-driven environment, the role of library professionals with respect to serving their users has equally become more important and challenging. On one hand, the library professional should be digitally sound and techno-savvy, on the other hand, he must be able to efficiently use his ICT skills to serve the user community. The objective of the current study was to assess the perception of professional librarians working in the government-run Degree Colleges of Kashmir regarding the use of ICT. This research is based on 44 Govt Degree Colleges in Kashmir region of J&K state. Questionnaire method was used for data collection from the target population. The findings of the study revealed that SOUL, the library management software, and Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) had the highest impact on the role of professional librarians. The findings of the present study support a need for the implementation of ICTenabled systems in libraries for better management of library house-keeping operations and for providing better and efficient services to the users.

Application of Information Communication Technology in Libraries of Research and Development Organizations in Chennai, Tamil Nadu

Information and communication technology (ICT) is a top priority in building the new global economy and construct swift changes in society. The effective application of ICT in research development libraries and information centres has improved the ways and techniques of research information controlling. The main objective of Research and Development Institutions (R&D) libraries is to appropriate process and retrieve the information and to make available the much-required information to the research community. This study reveal the implementation and utilisation of Information Communication and Technology (ICT) methods in R&D libraries in Chennai, and the level of the extent of ICT in these libraries and also suggested the modern techniques to be implemented. Knowledge can be divided in to two categories namely explicit and tacit. This paper prospects how ICT and related systems can maintain libraries aspire towards excel administration of ICT management system. The results show that ICT could play an important role in the library system, to be used broadly in the R&D libraries. Government and semi-government institutions standards can improve drastically through this ICT enabled libraries, so that the researchers can use this research information retrieval through ICT tools. As per the surveyed librarians, this paper suggests that more modern technology can be used in the R&D libraries which can contribute more successful ICT application use to the research community. This technology has made extensive changes in each and every one, discipline and knowledge. In that scenario nowadays the library and information science is also demanding automatically in that operations. Even nowadays ICT proficiency and competences needed for the implementation of the information and knowledge based library user society in the region of Chennai. The ICT tools have nowadays become an important technology in R&D libraries as it plays a very significant role in meeting information requirements of the research communities and institution as a whole. This study has identified the ICT structure and implementation in R&D libraries across Chennai.

Knowledge and Utilisation of ICT and Open Source Software's among the Library Professionals of Karnataka: A Case Study

The purpose of this study is to investigate the information and communication technology (ICT) proficiency of the library professionals in Karnataka, as well as to find out their software development, system analysis and design skills. The study is based on a questionnaire survey of library professionals in Karnataka. The analysis revealed that the library professionals in Karnataka have relatively average level of skills in various ICT-related tasks in libraries. Koha open source software was more used in libraries and a good number of professionals indicated that the main constraint in the application of ICT in libraries is inadequate training in ICT applications. All the professionals expressed a positive attitude towards the application of ICT in libraries.

Availability of ICT Infrastructure and Its Use in Nursing College Libraries Affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Science, Bangalore: A Study

Application of information and communication technology (ICT) in libraries has become inevitable in an era of information explosion and widespread use of digital information resources. Effective application of ICT in libraries helps in performing their operations and services most efficiently. Application of ICT in libraries of nursing college libraries affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Science has increased in the recent years. But the automation work of nursing college libraries is very slow due to certain problems. This study investigates the status of 42 automation nursing college libraries, current state of the art ICT infrastructure and the extent of use of electronic information resources and problems faced by the librarians in implementing the ICT in nursing college libraries affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Science, Bangalore. It also makes an attempt to provide suggestions and strategies for improving ICT facilities and library automation in college libraries.

The challenges of effective implementation of information and communication technology (ICT) in Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Libraries in Delta State, Nigeria

The digital age has brought about a completely different way of providing library services resulting in the development of new services. This study assessed the challenges of effective implementation of information and communication technology (ICT) in polytechnics and colleges of education libraries in Delta State. Descriptive survey research design was used for this study; data was collected by means of a questionnaire from thirty-nine (39) librarians of six (6) academic libraries in polytechnics and colleges of education in Delta State. The study revealed that the academic libraries under review is face with the following challenges in implementing ICT policy, thus, unreliable power supply, inadequate funding, shortage of manpower, lack of information and computer literacy skill among librarians. The study concluded that information and computer literacy skills are vital for the proper implementation of ICT in libraries for better information service delivery and therefore recommended that library administrators should introduce and organize different ICT training programmers for librarians at regular interval and federal government should provide adequate funding for ICT implementation.

Use of different information and communication technologies in Indian academic libraries

Purpose – This paper aims to present an exploration of the potential utilisation of different information and communication technologies (ICT) in Indian academic libraries. Design/methodology/approach – A survey method was used for the collection of data. A structured questionnaire, containing close-ended questions, was sent by postal mail to 30 librarians of the Central University Libraries in India, of which 15 questionnaires were returned. Findings – Academic libraries in India have mostly been involved in applying traditional ICT-based solutions for the management of various library functions and services, particularly for organising and retrieving information. Use of modern ICT-based tools of knowledge creation and sharing such as web discovery tools, blogs, wikis, Real Simple Syndication feeds, social networking and social bookmarking seems uncommon in academic libraries. Lack of trained staff in ICT, low level of ICT skills among library users, unawareness of potential benefits of ICT and inadequate ICT infrastructure were found as the major barriers of ICT applications in academic libraries. Practical implications – Academic libraries in India are still in the early stage of understanding the importance of modern ICTs. Librarians should renovate existing library environment and develop knowledge and skills among their staff in the fields of computer programming, website or portal development, hardware maintenance and metadata or e-resource management for providing quality information services to their users. Originality/value – Because no empirical study on the use ICT-based knowledge management (KM) tools in academic libraries in India has been carried out before, this study closes this gap and provides guidelines for practising librarians, policy makers, management and the University Grants Commission of India to promote the use of ICTs in libraries, and to design courses of information communication technology and related skills.

Use of ICT Based Library Resources and Services and its Impact on Users: A Case Study of University of Allahabad

This study has been undertaken to examine the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) based resources and services and its impact on users. The study was performed via a questionnaire survey of the library users. The papers also determine the satisfaction level of users regarding online services, favorite search engine and problems faced by the users in using the ICT in libraries. Users proposed a variety of measures of formal orientation and training in ICT based resources and services to become more effective users.

ICT and change in UK public libraries: does training matter?

A consideration of the implications of technological change for public library staff and managers in the UK is based on the selected results of a literature review. Recent developments affecting the growth of information and communication technology (ICT) in public libraries provide a context against which research into the effects of automation, the introduction of ICT in a variety of library environments and into society generally, are explored. The value of attitudes to ICT are questioned noting that attitudes are often seen as being important in determining the successful implementation of ICT in libraries. Training is suggested as an appropriate means of enabling staff to cope effectively with technological change. Successful training needs to appreciate that staff have different needs and so prefer different training methods. Resistance is also viewed as a natural response to change that managers should note and attempt to understand, if and when it occurs.
