Estimation of suspended sediment load to the Volta Lake under changing climate using empirical discharge-sediment equations

ABSTRACT Reliable estimates of sediment fluxes into rivers provide valuable information for current and future water resource development and management. In this study, empirical equations relating discharge to suspended sediment loads were developed for the three major tributaries (Black Volta, White Volta, and Oti) of the Volta Lake. The empirical equations were fed with projected future river discharges for the three tributaries, to estimate the suspended sediment fluxes into the Volta Lake for the future (2051–2080) relative to a baseline period (2014–2016). The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was used to model the projected discharges. The SWAT model was driven by downscaled climate projections from two regional climate models (RCA4 and RACMO22 T) forced by two emission scenarios (RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5) from the IPCC Fifth Assessment. Compared to the baseline, the estimated future sediment fluxes show average increments of about 19% and 28%, respectively under RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5. This has negative consequences as less water is stored for hydropower generation and the lake water becomes more turbid, which inhibits zooplankton and fishery production. The result underscores the need to improve the management of the Lake's watershed by ensuring proper landcover/use planning, afforestation and enforcing regulations on land degradation and general environmental conservation.

Evaluating surface and subsurface fluxes in hydrological models to advance basin-scale operational water supply forecasting

ABSTRACT Comprehensive assessments of hydrological components are crucial for enhancing operational water supply simulations. However, hydrological models are often evaluated based on their surface flow simulations, while the validation of subsurface and groundwater components tends to be overlooked or not well documented. In this study, we evaluated the outputs of two hydrological models, the Large Basin Runoff Model (LBRM) and the Weather Research and Forecasting – Hydrological modeling extension package (WRF-Hydro), for potential implementation in operational water balance forecasting in the Great Lakes region. We examined the simulated hydrological variables including surface (e.g. snow water equivalent, evapotranspiration, and streamflow), subsurface (e.g. soil moisture at different layers), and groundwater components with observed or reference data from ground-based stations and remotely sensed images. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the capabilities and limitations of each model. These findings contribute to more informed water management strategies for the Great Lakes region.

Riverine seasonal rainfall event tracing of organic pollution sources using fluorescence fingerprint difference spectrum

Elucidating the dynamics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) transport and transformation under seasonal rainfall events is essential for the conservation of riverine ecosystems, for mitigating the effects of climate change, and for crafting informed water management strategies. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the evolutionary characteristics of organic pollution sources during consecutive rainfall events in early spring and to quantify their relative contributions to the process of surface water pollution. The results showed seasonal rainfall induces water quality exceedances in rivers due to the combined impacts of terrestrial inputs and endogenous releases. Humic acid (HA) (region V) and fulvic acid (FA) (region III) emerged as the predominant organic matter in the water column, with their fluorescence intensity altering as rainwater flushed the riverbed. Sources of pollution include agricultural and urban domestic sources (AS + DS) (72.29 %), industrial and urban domestic and microbial sources (IS + DS + MS) (37.71 %), and agricultural and industrial sources (AS + IS) (63.32 %), indicating that agricultural surface pollution discharges contribute significantly. The gas–chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) further confirmed that exogenous inputs were predominantly comprised of particulate pollutants. This study underscores the efficacy of fluorescence difference spectrometry in delineating the migration and transformation of river pollution sources during seasonal rainfall and facilitating the implementation of targeted management strategies for river ecosystems.

Lake Water Ecological Simulation for a Typical Alpine Lake on the Tibetan Plateau

Lakes on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) serve as both indicators of and safeguards against climate change, playing a crucial role in the aquatic ecosystems of the TP. While considerable attention has been devoted to studying the thermal and dynamic processes of TP lakes, research focusing on their ecological variations has been limited. In this study, we selected Namco, a representative lake on the TP, to investigate its water ecological processes using the AQUATOX lake ecological model. Long-term ecological variations spanning from 1980 to 2020 were analyzed based on lake observations. Our results revealed a consistent increase in water nutrients, particularly total nitrogen (WTN), and total phosphorus (WTP), over the study period. Additionally, the concentrations of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and water gross and net primary production (WGPP and WNPP) exhibited a significant upward trend. Despite the persistent state of poor nutrition in the lake, the ecological conditions improved. Multiple linear regression analysis indicated that the concentrations of WGPP, WNPP, and Chl-a were more sensitive to the local climate and hydrology compared to WTN and WTP. A continuously warming climate would heat up the lake water body, further enhancing primary production and improving water quality in the future. This study provides insights for lake limnological and ecological research and can be used to inform water management strategies in high-altitude alpine regions.

Evaluation of correlation of physicochemical parameters and major ions present in groundwater of Raipur using discretization

Groundwater, vital for human consumption and agriculture, ecosystem support, and industrial activities, requires sustainable management using proper quality assessment techniques. This study examines the relationship between physicochemical parameters and major ions in groundwater samples collected from 44 regions in Raipur, using sensor-based data acquisition alongside traditional methods. Employing K-means clustering for data discretization, correlations between parameters are highlighted. Results show positive associations among EC, TDS, TH, and TA. ArcGIS interpolation maps visualize spatial distribution. Addressing class imbalance, an upsampling technique is utilized. Machine learning algorithms, including Logistic Regression and Random Forest, classify water quality with accuracies of 98.8 % and 98.3 %, respectively. This research, blending traditional and sensor-based methods, emphasizes informed water management.

Modelling Current-State N- and P-Fluxes into Surface Waters in Germany

For the first time, the AGRUM model consortium—consisting of the agro-economic model RAUMIS, the water balance model mGROWA, the hydrological nutrient transport models DENUZ, WeKu and MEPhos, and the urban emission model MONERIS—was jointly set up throughout Germany (357,000 km2). This provided a nationwide consistent nutrient model to capture the current status of N and P inputs to surface waters from diffuse sources and urban areas. Diffuse nutrient emissions were quantified in high spatial resolution for the input pathways’ groundwater, drainage runoff, and natural interflow (100 m × 100 m), as well as for water erosion and wash-off (25 m × 25 m). The sum of diffuse nutrient inputs to surface waters is about 385,000 metric tons N/yr and ca. 11,530 metric tons P/yr. Urban emissions were quantified either as point source inputs (wastewater treatment plants, industrial direct dischargers) or at municipality scale for different collection and treatment systems, e.g., rainwater sewers or decentralized treatment plants, and sum up to ca. 95,000 t N/yr and 7500 t P/yr. As modelled, total N and P inputs into surface waters correspond well with observed N and P loads in rivers. The model results represent valuable information for water managers, being responsible for the preparation of management plans for the third management cycle of the EC Water Framework Directive spanning from 2021 to 2027.

Influence of SMAP soil moisture retrieval assimilation on runoff estimation across South Asia

This study was designed to characterize and quantify the influence of surface soil moisture assimilation on estimated runoff (surface flow and baseflow) and hydraulically-routed streamflow across three large river basins in South Asia that are at risk of impending water stress. Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) surface soil moisture retrievals were assimilated into the Noah-MP land surface model. The gridded runoff was hydraulically routed to obtain volumetric streamflow values for a river network using a runoff routing module (Hydrological Modeling and Analysis Platform, HyMAP). The open loop (OL, model-only) and data assimilated (DA, includes soil moisture retrieval assimilation) Noah-MP runoff estimates highlighted the improvements in estimated total runoff across irrigated areas. Soil moisture assimilation impacted baseflow more relative to surface runoff. The HyMAP-based OL and DA streamflow generally underestimated the streamflow at upstream stations and overestimated the streamflow at downstream stations within the Indus basin due to missing physics related to reservoir operations. For stations located in the Ganges–Brahmaputra basins, the OL and DA estimation performance varied. The OL and DA results showed that the assimilation of soil moisture retrievals improves gridded runoff and volumetric streamflow across irrigated areas. Considerable relative change in streamflow (>70% increase in magnitude relative to OL) is noted after assimilation across the highly irrigated lower Indus basin and high precipitation regions in Bangladesh. Improving the modeling system’s representativeness of ground conditions via inclusion of water management information could improve large-scale streamflow modeling across South Asia.

An enhanced and expanded Toolbox for River Velocimetry using Images from Aircraft (TRiVIA)

AbstractDetailed, accurate information on flow patterns in river channels can improve understanding of habitat conditions, geomorphic processes, and potential hazards to help inform water management. Data describing flow patterns in river channels can be obtained efficiently via image‐based techniques that have become more widely used in recent years as the number of platforms for acquiring images has expanded and the number of algorithms for inferring velocities has grown. Image‐based techniques have been incorporated into various software packages, including the Toolbox for River Velocimetry using Images from Aircraft (TRiVIA). TRiVIA is a freely available, standalone computer program that provides a comprehensive workflow for performing particle image velocimetry (PIV)‐based analyses within a graphical interface. This paper summarizes major enhancements incorporated into the latest release of TRiVIA, version 2.1. For example, a new Tool for Input Parameter Selection (TIPS) provides guidance for specifying key inputs to the PIV algorithm by allowing users to explore relationships between flow velocity, pixel size, output vector spacing, and frame interval. Improved visualization capabilities include the ability to create streamlines and display PIV output on an interactive web map. The program now provides greater flexibility for importing field data in various formats and selecting which observations to use for accuracy assessment. The most substantial additions to TRiVIA 2.1 are the ability to integrate bathymetric information with image‐derived velocity estimates to calculate river discharge and to use images acquired from moving aircraft to efficiently map long segments of large rivers to support habitat assessment, contaminant transport studies, and a range of other applications.

Year-round spatial and temporal distribution of microplastics in water and sediments of an urban freshwater system (Jungnang Stream, Korea)

Streams and tributaries can play a significant role in the transport of inland microplastics to rivers and oceans; however, research on microplastics in these water bodies is limited compared to riverine and marine environments. Analyzing microplastic abundance at higher spatial and temporal resolutions is crucial to comprehend the dynamics of microplastics in these water bodies. Therefore, this study investigated year-round spatiotemporal variations of microplastics monthly in surface waters and sediments along the Jungnang Stream, one of the main tributaries to the Han River in South Korea. The mean concentration of microplastics in the stream was 9.8 ± 7.9 particles L−1 in water and 3640 ± 1620 particles kg−1 in sediment. Microplastic concentrations in surface waters during summer were significantly higher than in other seasons, positively linked to increased precipitation and river discharges. Polymer compositions mainly consisted of polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyethylene terephthalate, with the majority of microplastics detected smaller than 200 μm. Fragment-shaped microplastics were predominant over fibrous ones. The estimated annual input and output of microplastics through surface waters were 1.2–207 kg (2.7–150 billion particles) and 11.3–272 kg (17–769 billion particles), with the summer months contributing more than 70% of the total output. The greater microplastics output in the Jungnang Stream's waters compared to its receiving waters (Han River) indicates microplastics transport from water to other environmental compartments, such as sediments. These findings highlight the importance of investigating microplastic abundances in surface waters and sediments with temporal resolution, at least across different seasons. Such investigations offer valuable insights into the spatiotemporal occurrence and dynamic transport of microplastics, providing essential information for water management and the development of policies in freshwater ecosystems.

Long-Term Impacts of Glacier Retreat on Downstream Water Availability in Ethiopia

Purpose: The aim of the study was to examine Long-Term Impacts of Glacier Retreat on Downstream Water Availability in Ethiopia. Methodology: This study adopted a desk methodology. A desk study research design is commonly known as secondary data collection. This is basically collecting data from existing resources preferably because of its low cost advantage as compared to a field research. Our current study looked into already published studies and reports as the data was easily accessed through online journals and libraries. Findings: The study revealed that as glaciers continue to shrink due to climate change, the hydrological systems in mountainous regions of Ethiopia, such as the Simien Mountains and Bale Mountains, face disruptions in water supply, affecting both local communities and downstream users. The reduction in glacial meltwater contributes to decreased streamflow, altered river regimes, and increased variability in water availability, exacerbating water stress in a country already prone to droughts and water scarcity. Moreover, glacier retreat affects ecosystems, biodiversity, and livelihoods dependent on freshwater resources, further amplifying socio-economic vulnerabilities in the region. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: Climate Change Theory, Hydrological Cycle Theory & Systems Theory may be used to anchor future studies on Long-Term Impacts of Glacier Retreat on Downstream Water Availability in Ethiopia. Implement cutting-edge technologies for real-time monitoring of glacier melt and downstream water flow. Use satellite imagery, remote sensing, and IoT sensors to gather data that can inform water management practices in real time. Develop and enforce policies that ensure sustainable water use and prioritize the maintenance of water quality and ecosystem health. This includes setting limits on water withdrawals based on sustainability criteria and enhancing the legal frameworks protecting water rights.

How low is too low? Partnering with stakeholders and managers to define ecologically based low‐flow thresholds in a perennial temperate river

AbstractManaging aquatic ecosystems for people and nature can be improved by collaboration among scientists, managers, decision‐makers, and other stakeholders. Many collaborative and interdisciplinary approaches have been developed to address the management of freshwater ecosystems; however, there are still barriers to overcome. We worked as part of a regional stakeholder group comprising municipal water utility operators, conservation organizations, academic partners, and other stakeholders to understand the effects of low‐flow and drought on ecological functions of the upper Flint River, Georgia (USA), a free‐flowing river important for municipal water supply, recreation, and native biota. We used published literature and locally targeted studies to identify quantitative flow targets that could be used to inform water management and drought planning. Drawing from principles of Translational Ecology, we relied on an iterative process to develop information needs for the group and maintained communication and engagement throughout data collection, analysis, and synthesis. We identified three quantitative flow benchmarks to evaluate the ecological impacts of drought in the river. The results were valuable to both the water utilities represented in the working group and State regional water planning, which is used to guide water management strategies and permitting for the basin. We identified principles that were important for the successful engagement in the working group and helped to overcome the challenge of working across sectors and without direct authority guiding the implementation of our work. Interdisciplinary work and creative solutions are crucial to plan for and adapt to greater pressure on our water resources.

Formation and toxicity alteration of halonitromethanes from Chlorella vulgaris during UV/chloramination process involving bromide ion

Frequent algal blooms cause algal cells and their algal organic matter (AOM) to become critical precursors of disinfection by-products (DBPs) during water treatment. The presence of bromide ion (Br−) in water has been demonstrated to affect the formation laws and species distribution of DBPs. However, few researchers have addressed the formation and toxicity alteration of halonitromethanes (HNMs) from algae during disinfection in the presence of Br−. Therefore, in this work, Chlorella vulgaris was selected as a representative algal precursor to investigate the formation and toxicity alteration of HNMs during UV/chloramination involving Br−. The results showed that the formation concentration of HNMs increased and then decreased during UV/chloramination. The intracellular organic matter of Chlorella vulgaris was more susceptible to form HNMs than the extracellular organic matter. When the Br−: Cl2 mass ratio was raised from 0.004 to 0.08, the peak of HNMs total concentration increased 33.99%, and the cytotoxicity index and genotoxicity index of HNMs increased 67.94% and 22.80%. Besides, the formation concentration and toxicity of HNMs increased with increasing Chlorella vulgaris concentration but decreased with increasing solution pH. Possible formation pathways of HNMs from Chlorella vulgaris during UV/chloramination involving Br− were proposed based on the alteration of nitrogen species and fluorescence spectrum analysis. Furthermore, the formation laws of HNMs from Chlorella vulgaris in real water samples were similar to those in deionized water samples. This study contributes to a better comprehension of HNMs formation from Chlorella vulgaris and provides valuable information for water managers to reduce hazards associated with the formation of HNMs.

Hydrologic Sensitivity of a Critical Turkish Watershed to Inform Water Resource Management in an Altered Climate

This study introduces a novel sensitivity analysis approach to assess the resilience and susceptibility of hydrologic systems to the stresses of climate change, moving away from conventional top-down methodologies. By exploring the hydrological sensitivity of the upper Kızılırmak River basin using the Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) hydrologic model, we employed a sensitivity-based approach as an alternative to the traditional Global Climate Model (GCM)-based methods, providing more insightful information for water managers. Considering the consistent projections of increasing temperature over this region in GCMs, the hydrologic system was perturbed to examine gradients of a more challenging climate characterized by warming and drying conditions. The sensitivity of streamflow, snow water equivalent, and evapotranspiration to temperature (T) and precipitation (P) variations under each perturbation or “reference” climate was quantified. Results indicate that streamflow responds to T negatively under all warming scenarios. As the reference climates become drier, streamflow sensitivity to P increases, indicating that meteorological drought impacts on water availability could be exacerbated. These results suggest that there will be heightened difficulty in managing water resources in the region if it undergoes both warming and drying due to the following setbacks: (1) water availability will shift away from the summer season of peak water demand due to the warming effects on the snowpack, (2) annual water availability will likely decrease due to a combination of warming and lower precipitation, and (3) streamflow sensitivity to hydroclimatic variability will increase, meaning that there will be more extreme impacts to water availability. Water managers will need to plan for a larger set of extreme conditions.

Modification of Hilhorst model for saturated extract electrical conductivity estimation of coir using frequency domain reflectometry sensors – A laboratory study

Frequency domain reflectometry (FDR) sensors can measure moisture content and electrical conductivity (EC) of growing media, thus providing information for effective water and nutrient management of crops. FDR sensors generally provide the bulk EC (σb) value, which is different from the saturated extract EC (σe) values that most growers and practical studies generally use. To properly estimate σe of media, we modified the previous Hilhorst model that calculates pore water EC (σp) from FDR sensor readings. The 16 coir samples with four moisture and four EC levels were prepared, and their changes in the dielectric constant of bulk medium (εb), σb, and medium temperature from the FDR sensors were recorded and used for analysis. As a result, the εσb=0 (εb when σb is 0) of the coir used in this experiment was 1.64, which was much lower than the εσb=0 suggested for mineral soil (4.1), indicating that the medium-specific εσb=0 should be adjusted. Although σe value estimation through the Hilhorst model with adjusted εσb=0 improved, the values were still unreliable to represent the actual σe values (root mean square error, RMSE = 2.280, R2 = 0.30). To convert the σp derived from the Hilhorst model with adjusted εσb=0 to actual σe, the regression equation was applied as σe = 0.5381 × σp + 1.6493. The adjusted Hilhorst model could provide a more reliable σe estimation (RMSE = 0.929, R2 = 0.62). These results indicate that proper adjustment of εσb=0 for the specific medium is necessary, and adjusting the equation for converting σp into σe would be helpful to properly interpret the σb to practically utilize the FDR sensors for effective water and nutrient management.

Global patterns in river water storage dependent on residence time

Accurate assessment of global river flows and stores is critical for informing water management practices, but current estimates of global river flows exhibit substantial spread and estimates of river stores remain sparse. Estimates of river flows and stores are hampered by uncertainties in land runoff, an unobserved quantity that provides water input to rivers. Here we leverage global river flow observations and an ensemble of land surface models to generate a globally gauge-corrected monthly river flow and storage dataset. We estimate a global river storage mean (± monthly variability) of 2,246 ± 505 km3 and a global continental flow of 37,411 ± 7,816 km3 yr−1. Our global river water storage time series demonstrates that flow wave residence time is a fundamental driver that can double or halve river water stores and their variability. We also reconcile the wide range in previous estimates of monthly variability in global river flows. We identify previously underappreciated freshwater sources to the ocean from the Maritime Continent (Indonesia, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea) amounting to 1.6 times the Congo River and illustrate our capability of detecting severe anthropogenic water withdrawals.

The Anatomy of a Drought in the Upper San Francisco Estuary: Water Quality and Lower-Trophic Responses to Multi-Year Droughts Over a Long-Term Record (1975-2021)

Multi-year droughts are ever-present and transformational features of California’s Mediterranean climate and can fundamentally affect the water quality and the ecosystem responses of the San Francisco Estuary (estuary) and the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta (Delta). This study assessed data collected by long-term monitoring programs over the past 46 water years (1975-2021) to evaluate how water quality in the estuary changes during multi-year droughts. Data were aggregated by region (South-Central Delta, North Delta, Confluence, Suisun Bay, and Suisun Marsh) and season, then differences between multi-year Drought periods, multi-year Wet periods, and Neutral periods were compared using generalized linear models. We found that multi-year Drought periods altered multiple physical and chemical parameters in the estuary, increasing water temperature, salinity, water clarity, and nutrient levels. This trend was consistent across regions and seasons, with few exceptions. Increases in these parameters during Drought periods were likely caused by reduced Delta inflows that intensified in each successive dry year because of reduced precipitation and managed estuarine inflows and outflows. Drought periods did not substantially affect tidal velocities within the estuary, which remained mostly consistent across Wet and Drought periods. Trends in chlorophyll concentrations during Drought periods were more nuanced with higher concentrations occurring in the South-Central Delta region and during the winter and spring. Together, these results characterized drought in the estuary as warm, clear, high in nutrients, with patchy phytoplankton blooms (as indexed by chlorophyll), all of which have implications for higher trophic levels. Considering that droughts are expected to increase in frequency and intensity in California with climate change, understanding the effects of multi-year droughts on the water quality conditions of the estuary can help inform water management decisions.

Satellite-Derived Indicators of Drought Severity and Water Storage in Estuarine Reservoirs: A Case Study of Qingcaosha Reservoir, China

Estuarine reservoirs are critical for freshwater supply and security, especially for regions facing water scarcity challenges due to climate change and population growth. Conventional methods for assessing drought severity or monitoring reservoir water level and storage are often limited by data availability, accessibility and quality. We present an approach for monitoring estuarine reservoir water levels, storage and extreme drought via satellite remote sensing and waterline detection. Based on the CoastSat algorithm, Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 images from 2013 to 2022 were adopted to extract the waterline of Qingcaosha Reservoir, the largest estuarine reservoir in the world and a key source of freshwater for Shanghai, China. This study confirmed the accuracy of the satellite-extracted results through two main methods: (1) calculating the angle of the central shoal slope in the reservoir using the extracted waterline data and measured water levels and (2) inverting the time series of water levels for comparison with measured data. The correlation coefficient of the estimated water level reached ~0.86, and the root mean square error (RMSE) of the estimated shoal slope was ~0.2°, indicating that the approach had high accuracy and reliability. We analyzed the temporal and spatial patterns of waterline changes and identified two dates (21 February 2014 and 15 October 2022) when the reservoir reached the lowest water levels, coinciding with periods of severe saltwater intrusions in the estuary. The extreme drought occurrences in the Qingcaosha Reservoir were firstly documented through the utilization of remote sensing data. The results also indicate a strong resilience of the Qingcaosha Reservoir and demonstrate that the feasibility and utility of using satellite remote sensing and waterline detection for estuarine reservoir storage can provide timely and accurate information for water resource assessment, management and planning.

A Multi-Sensor Approach to Characterize Winter Water-Level Drawdown Patterns in Lakes

Artificial manipulation of lake water levels through practices like winter water-level drawdown (WD) is prevalent across many regions, but the spatiotemporal patterns are not well documented due to limited in situ monitoring. Multi-sensor satellite remote sensing provides an opportunity to map and analyze drawdown frequency and metrics (timing, magnitude, duration) at broad scales. This study developed a cloud computing framework to process time series of synthetic aperture radar (Sentinel 1-SAR) and optical sensor (Landsat 8, Sentinel 2) data to characterize WD in 166 lakes across Massachusetts, USA, during 2016–2021. Comparisons with in situ logger data showed that the Sentinel 1-derived surface water area captured relative water-level fluctuations indicative of WD. A machine learning approach classified lakes as WD versus non-WD based on seasonal water-level fluctuations derived from Sentinel 1-SAR data. The framework mapped WD lakes statewide, revealing prevalence throughout Massachusetts with interannual variability. Results showed WDs occurred in over 75% of lakes during the study period, with high interannual variability in the number of lakes conducting WD. Mean WD magnitude was highest in the wettest year (2018) but % lake area exposure did not show any association with precipitation and varied between 8% to 12% over the 5-year period. WD start date was later and duration was longer in wet years, indicating climate mediation of WD implementation driven by management decisions. The data and tools developed provide an objective information resource to evaluate ecological impacts and guide management of this prevalent but understudied phenomenon. Overall, the results and interactive web tool developed as part of this study provide new hydrologic intelligence to inform water management and policies related to WD practices.

Estimating and Assessing Monthly Water Level Changes of Reservoirs and Lakes in Jiangsu Province Using Sentinel-3 Radar Altimetry Data

Generating accurate monthly estimations of water level fluctuations in reservoirs and lakes is crucial for supporting effective water resource management and protection. The dual-satellite configuration of Sentinel-3 makes it possible to monitor water level changes with great coverage and short time intervals. However, the potential of Sentinel-3’s Synthetic Aperture Radar Altimetry (SRAL) data to enable operational monitoring of water levels across Jiangsu Province on a monthly basis has not yet been fully explored. This study demonstrated and validated the use of Sentinel-3’s SRAL to generate accurate monthly water level estimations needed to inform water management strategies. The monthly water levels of lakes and reservoirs from 2017 to 2021 were produced using Sentinel-3 level-2 land products. Results showed that, compared with in situ data across eight studied lakes, all lakes presented R (Pearson correlation coefficient) values greater than 0.5 and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) values less than 1 m. Notably, water level estimates for Tai Lake, Gaoyou Lake, and Luoma Lake were particularly accurate, with R above 0.9 and RMSE below 0.5 m. Furthermore, the monthly water level estimates derived from the Sentinel-3 data showed consistent seasonal trends over the multi-year study period. The annual water level of all lakes did not change significantly, except for Shijiu Lake, of which the difference between the highest and lowest water level was up to about 5 m. Our findings confirmed the water level observation ability of Sentinel-3. The accuracy of water level monitoring could be influenced by internal water level differences, terrain features, as well as the area and shape of the lake. Larger lakes with more altimetry sampling points tended to yield higher accuracy estimates of water level fluctuations. These results demonstrate that the frequent, wide-area coverage offered by this satellite platform provides valuable hydrological information, especially across remote regions lacking in situ data. Sentinel-3 has immense potential to support improved water security in data-scarce regions.

Saltwater Intrusion in the Changjiang River Estuary in Response to the East Route of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project in the New Period after 2003

The continuous operation of the Three Gorges Reservoir since 2003 has altered the annual runoff into the Changjiang River Estuary, significantly affecting patterns of saltwater intrusion. This has become more pronounced with the development of the East Route of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project, which has changed the runoff distribution and saltwater dynamics once again. Recognizing the critical need to understand these changes, this study employs numerical simulations to investigate the impact of the East Route of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project’s water abstraction on saltwater intrusion in the Changjiang River Estuary post-2003. It assesses intrusion distances, freshwater availability, and periods when water intake might be compromised due to high salinity. Our findings indicate that the East Route of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project markedly influences intrusion patterns. By modeling various runoff scenarios, the study delineates the correlation between average monthly runoff at the Datong Hydrological Survey Station and estuary salinity. It then suggests optimal ecological discharge levels to manage saltwater intrusion effectively. This research provides insights which are necessary for informed water management and ecological protection in the region.
