An experimental study on the settling velocity of inertial particles in different homogeneous isotropic turbulent flows

We propose an experimental study on the gravitational settling velocity of dense, sub-Kolmogorov inertial particles under different background turbulent flows. We report phase Doppler particle analyser measurements in a low-speed wind tunnel uniformly seeded with micrometre scale water droplets. Turbulence is generated with three different grids (two consisting of different active-grid protocols while the third is a regular static grid), allowing us to cover a very wide range of turbulence conditions in terms of Taylor-scale-based Reynolds numbers ( $Re_\lambda \in [30\unicode{x2013}520]$ ), Rouse numbers ( $Ro \in [0\unicode{x2013}5]$ ) and volume fractions ( $\phi _v \in [0.5\times 10^{-5}\unicode{x2013}2.0\times 10^{-5}]$ ). We find, in agreement with previous works, that enhancement of the settling velocity occurs at low Rouse number, while hindering of the settling occurs at higher Rouse number for decreasing turbulence energy levels. The wide range of flow parameters explored allowed us to observe that enhancement decreases significantly with the Taylor–Reynolds number and is significantly affected by the volume fraction $\phi _v$ . We also studied the effect of large-scale forcing on settling velocity modification. The possibility of changing the inflow conditions by using different grids allowed us to test cases with fixed $Re_\lambda$ and turbulent intensity but with different integral length scale. Finally, we assess the existence of secondary flows in the wind tunnel and their role on particle settling. This is achieved by characterising the settling velocity at two different positions, the centreline and close to the wall, with the same streamwise coordinate.

Deposition velocity of inertial particles driven by wall-normal external force in turbulent channel flow

The effect of wall-normal external force and particle inertia on the deposition of particles in wall-bounded turbulence has been investigated by a point-particle Lagrange simulation. The preferential distribution of particles in the near-wall regions and the insufficient deceleration in the viscous sublayer jointly cause the enhancement of deposition velocity. The external forces strongly affect the clustering of particles in coherent flow structures. The increasing of the wall-normal force inhibits the clustering of particles, which further affects the deposition velocity.

Oscillations of a particle-laden fountain.

Different regimes are usually observed for fluid migration through an immersed granular layer. In this work, we report a puzzling behavior when injecting water at a constant flow rate through a nozzle at the bottom of an immersed granular layer in a Hele-Shaw cell. In a given range of parameters (granular layer height and fluid flow rate) the granular bed is not only fluidized, but the particle-laden jet also exhibits periodic oscillations. The frequency and amplitude of the oscillations are quantified. The Strouhal number displays a power-law behavior as a function of a nondimensional parameter, J, defined as the ratio between the jet velocity at the initial granular bed height and the inertial particle velocity. Fluid-particle coupling is responsible for the jet oscillations. This mechanism could be at the origin of the cyclic behavior of pockmarks and mud volcanoes in sedimentary basins.

Effects of the path history on inertial particle pair dynamics in the dissipation range of homogeneous isotropic turbulence

The relationship between inertial particle pair dynamics in the dissipation range and local turbulence characteristics is investigated using direct numerical simulations in homogeneous isotropic turbulence at a Reynolds number of 110 based on the Taylor microscale. Seventeen million sub-Kolmogorov-sized particles with Stokes numbers of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 are tracked backward in time to investigate the formation of the relative velocity of inertial particles in the dissipation range. The numerical experiment shows that particle pairs take different paths and sample different underlying flows depending on the intensity of the local turbulence activity at final locations where the distance between particles is much smaller than the Kolmogorov length scale. Taking different paths depending on the intensity of the local turbulence activity is described by the sling time, which is defined as the time when particle pairs are slung out from the underlying flow. Particle pairs with shorter sling time values than the characteristic time scale of particles are detached from the dissipation range of flow and approach each other in a ballistic fashion. In contrast, the large-scale flow guides particle pairs with longer sling time than the characteristic time scales. In particular, particle pairs forming caustics with the same sling time are detached from similar flows regardless of the magnitude of particle relative velocities. Samplings of similar flows at sling moments cause the scaling relationship between relative velocities of particles and sling time. These behaviors of particle pairs, especially for pairs with caustics in relative velocities, are also observed in the range of considered Stokes numbers. The relationship between the intensity of the local turbulence activity and the paths taken by particles highlights the importance of considering a preferential sampling of flow in understanding inertial particle pair dynamics.

Collision statistics and settling velocity of inertial particles in homogeneous turbulence from high-resolution DNS under two-way momentum coupling

Statistical quantities related to the motion of low inertia particles in homogeneous isotropic turbulence are investigated by means of direct numerical simulations applying the Eulerian–Lagrangian approach and the point-particle approximation. The modelled systems imitate, among others, the microphysical processes relevant for cloud droplets in typical atmospheric flows. To complement former studies, the turbulent flow is simulated using high-resolution grids, covering a wide range of Reynolds numbers, up to Rλ≈500. The effect of mutual interaction of the carrier and dispersed phases, known as two-way momentum coupling, is considered, and the new results are compared with those obtained under one-way coupling. The droplet kinematic statistics, including the radial relative velocity and radial distribution functions, and dynamic properties, such as the collision kernel and settling velocity, are reported over a wide range of mass loadings. The results show that the radial distribution function of “nearly touching” droplets decreases as the mass loading increases when gravity is not considered. In the presence of gravity there is an enhancement in clustering for dilute systems while a reduction occurs when the two-way coupling effect becomes considerable. An opposite trend is observed for relative velocities due to transfer of momentum from droplets to the fluid, decorrelating the motion of neighbouring droplets. By increasing Rλ, or equivalently enlarging the domain size at fixed energy dissipation rate, the clustering weakens if gravity is considered, while relative velocities augment, ultimately leading to a higher collision kernel. The average settling velocity increases with Rλ. It also increases with mass loading, especially for low-inertia droplets. When performing simulations of small particles at considerable mass loadings a parameterisation is unavoidable to reduce the numerical cost. We use the super-droplet approach and demonstrate its impact on physical fidelity of the modelled systems. The effect of the large-scale forcing scheme, deterministic or stochastic, on the droplet dynamic statistics is also investigated.

Direct numerical simulation of bidisperse inertial particles settling in turbulent channel flow

The behavior of settling velocity and clustering of bidisperse inertial particles in a turbulent channel flow is investigated through direct numerical simulation. The particle-laden planar channel flow has a friction Reynolds number at Reτ = 180. Eulerian–Lagrangian method is used to study the dynamic properties of bidisperse and monodisperse inertial particles with 16 different simulation sets, which are distinguished by Stokes numbers ranging from St+ = 1.31 to 52.58 and particle number ratio from 1:1 to 1:8. Momentum exchange between fluid and particle phases is considered in the simulation as the chosen initial volume fraction at 5 × 10−5 is in the two-way coupling regime. The gravity is set at the direction normal to both the wall normal direction and the streamwise direction. We observe that in the bidisperse cases the turbophoresis effect of inertial particles with the smaller diameter is significant even though it is very weak in the corresponding monodisperse cases. We use radial distribution function (RDF) to investigate the degree of clustering and turbophoresis. The results indicate that RDF is larger in the bidisperse cases for both large and small particles and it is greatly affected by the bulk particle number ratio and the Stokes number ratio. Unlike clustering, the terminal settling velocities of inertial particles in the bidisperse cases are affected by the final volume fraction at the dynamic equilibrium state. When their final volume fractions are lower than those in the corresponding monodisperse cases, the settling velocity of either particle becomes reduced from the monodisperse value. We also investigate the relationship between settling velocity and vortex strength. The results show that the preferential sweeping mechanism is strengthened with Stokes number decreasing and the mechanism can be quantified by the slope of the curve of settling velocity variation with vortex strength.

Mean transport of inertial particles in viscous streaming flows

Viscous streaming has emerged as an effective method to transport, trap, and cluster inertial particles in a fluid. Previous work has shown that this transport is well described by the Maxey-Riley equation augmented with a term representing Saffman lift. However, in its straightforward application to viscous streaming flows, the equation suffers from severe numerical stiffness due to the wide disparity between the time scales of viscous response, oscillation period, and slow mean transport, posing a severe challenge for drawing physical insight on mean particle trajectories. In this work, we develop equations that directly govern the mean transport of particles in oscillatory viscous flows. The derivation of these equations relies on a combination of three key techniques. In the first, we develop an inertial particle velocity field via a small Stokes number expansion of the particle's deviation from that of the fluid. This expansion clearly reveals the primary importance of Fax\'en correction and Saffman lift in effecting the trapping of particles in streaming cells. Then, we apply Generalized Lagrangian Mean theory to unambiguously decompose the transport into fast and slow scales, and ultimately, develop the Lagrangian mean velocity field to govern mean transport. Finally, we carry out an expansion in small oscillation amplitude to simplify the governing equations and to clarify the hierarchy of first- and second-order influences, and particularly, the crucial role of Stokes drift in the mean transport. We demonstrate the final set of equations on the transport of both fluid and inertial particles in configurations involving one and two weakly oscillating cylinders. Notably, the new equations allow numerical time steps that are $O(10^3)$ larger than the existing approach with little sacrifice in accuracy, allowing more efficient predictions of transport.

Building a Maxey–Riley framework for surface ocean inertial particle dynamics

A framework for the study of surface ocean inertial particle motion is built from the Maxey–Riley set. A new set is obtained by vertically averaging each term of the original set, adapted to account for Earth’s rotation effects, across the extent of a sufficiently small spherical particle that floats at an assumed unperturbed air–sea interface with unsteady nonuniform winds and ocean currents above and below, respectively. The inertial particle velocity is shown to exponentially decay in time to a velocity that lies close to an average of seawater and air velocities, weighted by a function of the seawater-to-particle density ratio. Such a weighted average velocity turns out to fortuitously be of the type commonly discussed in the search-and-rescue literature, which alone cannot explain the observed role of anticyclonic mesoscale eddies as traps for marine debris or the formation of great garbage patches in the subtropical gyres, phenomena dominated by finite-size effects. A heuristic extension of the theory is proposed to describe the motion of nonspherical particles by means of a simple shape factor correction, and recommendations are made for incorporating wave-induced Stokes drift and allowing for inhomogeneities of the carrying fluid density. The new Maxey–Riley set outperforms an ocean adaptation that ignored wind drag effects and the first reported adaption that attempted to incorporate them.

Inertial particle velocity and distribution in vertical turbulent channel flow: A numerical and experimental comparison

This study is concerned with the statistics of vertical turbulent channel flow laden with inertial particles for two different volume concentrations (ΦV=3×10−6 and ΦV=5×10−5) at a Stokes number of St+=58.6 based on viscous units. Two independent direct numerical simulation models utilizing the point-particle approach are compared to recent experimental measurements, where all relevant nondimensional parameters are directly matched. While both numerical models are built on the same general approach, details of the implementations are different, particularly regarding how two-way coupling is represented. At low volume loading, both numerical models are in general agreement with the experimental measurements, with certain exceptions near the walls for the wall-normal particle velocity fluctuations. At high loading, these discrepancies are increased, and it is found that particle clustering is overpredicted in the simulations as compared to the experimental observations. Potential reasons for the discrepancies are discussed. As this study is among the first to perform one-to-one comparisons of particle-laden flow statistics between numerical models and experiments, it suggests that continued efforts are required to reconcile differences between the observed behavior and numerical predictions.

The role of collective effects on settling velocity enhancement for inertial particles in turbulence

A particle-laden homogeneous isotropic turbulent flow is studied experimentally to understand the role of collective effects (e.g. particle–particle aerodynamic interactions caused by local particle accumulation) on the settling velocity of inertial particles (Stokes number: $0.3<St<0.6$). Conditional averaging of the particle vertical velocity on the local concentration identifies three settling regimes: modest enhancement by single particle–turbulence interactions in low concentration regions, rapid settling velocity increases in clusters at intermediate concentrations and saturation of the settling enhancement at large concentrations. The latter effect, associated with four-way coupling, displays qualitative agreement with simulations in the literature and is a new experimental observation. Fluctuations up to an order of magnitude larger than the background volume fraction are measured using Voronoï analysis. A model is developed following a classic volume-averaged multiphase flow methodology to provide an interpretation of the three settling regimes and quantitative predictions consistent with the measurements.

Towards acoustic particle velocity sensors in air using entrained balloons: Measurements and modeling.

In this article, the feasibility of using balloons for the measurement of acoustic particle velocity in air is investigated by exploring the behavior of an elastic balloon in air as it vibrates in response to an incident acoustic wave. This is motivated by the frequent use of neutrally buoyant spheres as underwater inertial particle velocity sensors. The results of experiments performed in an anechoic chamber are presented, in which a pair of laser Doppler vibrometers simultaneously captured the velocities of the front and back surfaces of a Mylar balloon in an acoustic field. From phase measurements, the motion is described in terms of contributions from odd-order vibration modes (including bulk translation) and even-order vibration modes. The measured entrainment factors for the balloon are seen to be in good agreement with a physical model based on the scattering from an entrained rigid sphere. This demonstrates the feasibility of using entrained balloons for direct measurement of acoustic particle velocity in air.

Turbulent thermal diffusion in strongly stratified turbulence: Theory and experiments

Turbulent thermal diffusion is a combined effect of the temperature stratified turbulence and inertia of small particles. It causes the appearance of a non-diffusive turbulent flux of particles in the direction of the turbulent heat flux. This non-diffusive turbulent flux of particles is proportional to the product of the mean particle number density and the effective velocity of inertial particles. The theory of this effect has been previously developed only for small temperature gradients and small Stokes numbers (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 76}, 224, 1996). In this study a generalized theory of turbulent thermal diffusion for arbitrary temperature gradients and Stokes numbers has been developed. The laboratory experiments in the oscillating grid turbulence and in the multi-fan produced turbulence have been performed to validate the theory of turbulent thermal diffusion in strongly stratified turbulent flows. It has been shown that the ratio of the effective velocity of inertial particles to the characteristic vertical turbulent velocity for large Reynolds numbers is less than 1. The effective velocity of inertial particles as well as the effective coefficient of turbulent thermal diffusion increase with Stokes numbers reaching the maximum at small Stokes numbers and decreases for larger Stokes numbers. The effective coefficient of turbulent thermal diffusion also decreases with the mean temperature gradient. It has been demonstrated that the developed theory is in a good agreement with the results of the laboratory experiments.

Developments and difficulties in predicting the relative velocities of inertial particles at the small-scales of turbulence

In this paper, we consider the development of theoretical models to predict the relative velocities of inertial particles in isotropic turbulence. In particular, we use our recently developed theory for the backward-in-time (BIT) relative dispersion of inertial particles in turbulence [Bragg et al., “Forward and backward in time dispersion of fluid and inertial particles in isotropic turbulence,” Phys. Fluids 28, 013305 (2016)] to develop the theoretical model by Pan and Padoan [“Relative velocity of inertial particles in turbulent flows,” J. Fluid Mech. 661, 73 (2010)]. We focus on the most difficult regime to model, the dissipation range, and find that the modified Pan and Padoan model (that uses the BIT dispersion theory) can lead to significantly improved predictions for the relative velocities, when compared with the Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) data. However, when the particle separation distance, r, is less than the Kolmogorov lengthscale, η, the modified model overpredicts the DNS data. We explain how these overpredictions arise from two assumptions in the BIT dispersion theory that are in general not satisfied when the final separation of the BIT dispersing particles is <η. We then demonstrate the failure of both the original and modified versions of the Pan and Padoan model to predict the correct scale-invariant forms for the inertial particle relative velocity structure functions in the dissipation regime. It is shown how this failure, which is also present in other models, is associated with our current inability to correctly predict not only the quantitative but also the qualitative behavior of the radial distribution function in the dissipation range when St=O(1).

Eulerian-Eulerian modelling of particle-laden two-phase flow

When typical fluid RMS velocities scale with the terminal velocities of inertial particles, turbulent particle-laden pipe flows exhibit special features. Recent experiments have shown that the taking of Eulerian averages requires special measures in such flows. An existing Eulerian numerical method has been adapted in order to accommodate for these special features. The effects of flow direction (upward or downward) and mean concentration (in the range 5.0×10−6 to 3.2×10−5) on radial particle distribution and on the mean axial velocities of both particles and fluid are investigated. Inertial particles have a Stokes number equal to 2.3, based on the particle relaxation time and viscous scales; Reynolds number is 10,300, based on the bulk velocity and the pipe diameter. To get agreement between experimental findings and model predictions, a lift force term had to be included; core peaking in up-flow and wall peaking in down-flow result from it. The difference of mean particle and fluid Eulerian velocities is found to decrease towards zero near the wall in both up-flow and down-flow. This feature required inclusion of a modified drag component in the particle axial momentum equation of the Eulerian model.

The effect of Reynolds number on inertial particle dynamics in isotropic turbulence. Part 2. Simulations with gravitational effects

In Part 1 of this study (Ireland et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 796, 2016, pp. 617–658), we analysed the motion of inertial particles in isotropic turbulence in the absence of gravity using direct numerical simulation (DNS). Here, in Part 2, we introduce gravity and study its effect on single-particle and particle-pair dynamics over a wide range of flow Reynolds numbers, Froude numbers and particle Stokes numbers. The overall goal of this study is to explore the mechanisms affecting particle collisions, and to thereby improve our understanding of droplet interactions in atmospheric clouds. We find that the dynamics of heavy particles falling under gravity can be artificially influenced by the finite domain size and the periodic boundary conditions, and we therefore perform our simulations on larger domains to reduce these effects. We first study single-particle statistics that influence the relative positions and velocities of inertial particles. We see that gravity causes particles to sample the flow more uniformly and reduces the time particles can spend interacting with the underlying turbulence. We also find that gravity tends to increase inertial particle accelerations, and we introduce a model to explain that effect. We then analyse the particle relative velocities and radial distribution functions (RDFs), which are generally seen to be independent of Reynolds number for low and moderate Kolmogorov-scale Stokes numbers $St$. We see that gravity causes particle relative velocities to decrease by reducing the degree of preferential sampling and the importance of path-history interactions, and that the relative velocities have higher scaling exponents with gravity. We observe that gravity has a non-trivial effect on clustering, acting to decrease clustering at low $St$ and to increase clustering at high $St$. By considering the effect of gravity on the clustering mechanisms described in the theory of Zaichik & Alipchenkov (New J. Phys., vol. 11, 2009, 103018), we provide an explanation for this non-trivial effect of gravity. We also show that when the effects of gravity are accounted for in the theory of Zaichik & Alipchenkov (2009), the results compare favourably with DNS. The relative velocities and RDFs exhibit considerable anisotropy at small separations, and this anisotropy is quantified using spherical harmonic functions. We use the relative velocities and the RDFs to compute the particle collision kernels, and find that the collision kernel remains as it was for the case without gravity, namely nearly independent of Reynolds number for low and moderate $St$. We conclude by discussing practical implications of the results for the cloud physics and turbulence communities and by suggesting possible avenues for future research.

Settling regimes of inertial particles in isotropic turbulence

AbstractWe investigate the settling speeds and root mean square (r.m.s.) velocities of inertial particles in isotropic turbulence with gravity using experiments with water droplets in air turbulence from 32 loudspeaker jets and direct numerical simulations (DNS). The dependence on particle inertia, gravity and the scales of both the smallest and largest turbulent eddies is investigated. We isolate the mechanisms of turbulence settling modification and find that the reduced settling speeds of large particles in experiments are due to nonlinear drag effects. We demonstrate using DNS that reduced settling speeds with linear drag (e.g. see Nielsen, J. Sedim. Petrol., vol. 63, 1993, pp. 835–838) only arise in artificial flows that, by design, eliminate preferential sweeping by the eddies. Gravity and inertia both reduce the particle r.m.s. velocities and falling particles are more responsive to vertical than to horizontal fluctuations. The model by Wang & Stock (J. Atmos. Sci., vol. 50, 1993, pp. 1897–1913) captures these trends.

TURBULENCE-INDUCED RELATIVE VELOCITY OF DUST PARTICLES. III. THE PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTION

Motivated by its important role in the collisional growth of dust particles in protoplanetary disks, we investigate the probability distribution function (PDF) of the relative velocity of inertial particles suspended in turbulent flows. Using the simulation from our previous work, we compute the relative velocity PDF as a function of the friction timescales, tau_p1 and tau_p2, of two particles of arbitrary sizes. The friction time of particles included in the simulation ranges from 0.1 tau_eta to 54T_L, with tau_eta and T_L the Kolmogorov time and the Lagrangian correlation time of the flow, respectively. The relative velocity PDF is generically non-Gaussian, exhibiting fat tails. For a fixed value of tau_p1, the PDF is the fattest for equal-size particles (tau_p2~tau_p1), and becomes thinner at both tau_p2<tau_ p1 and tau_p2>tau_p1. Defining f as the friction time ratio of the smaller particle to the larger one, we find that, at a given f in 1/2<f<1, the PDF fatness first increases with the friction time, tau_ph, of the larger particle, peaks at tau_ph~tau_eta, and then decreases as tau_ph increases further. For 0<f<1/4, the PDF shape becomes continuously thinner with increasing tau_ph. The PDF is nearly Gaussian only if tau_ph is sufficiently large (>>T_L). These features are successfully explained by the Pan & Padoan model. Using our simulation data and some simplifying assumptions, we estimated the fractions of collisions resulting in sticking, bouncing, and fragmentation as a function of the dust size in protoplanerary disks, and argued that accounting for non-Gaussianity of the collision velocity may help further alleviate the bouncing barrier problem.

New insights from comparing statistical theories for inertial particles in turbulence: II. Relative velocities

Part I of this two-part series compared two theories for the radial distribution function (RDF), a statistical measure of the clustering of inertial particles in isotropic turbulence. In Part II, we will contrast three theoretical models for the relative velocities of inertial particles in isotropic turbulence, one by Zaichik et al (2009 New. J. Phys. 11 103018), the second by Pan et al (2010 J. Fluid Mech. 661 73) and the third by Gustavsson et al (2011 Phys. Rev. E. 84 045304). We find that in general they describe the relative velocities in qualitatively similar ways, capturing the influence of the non-local dynamics on the formation of caustics and non-smooth scaling behavior in the dissipation range. We then compare the theoretical predictions with direct numerical simulation data and find that although they capture the qualitative behavior of the data consistently, they differ quantitatively, and we discuss the possible sources of error in each of the theories. Finally, we consider how the Zaichik et al theory predicts that the formation of caustics modifies the form of the RDF, and show that the theory describes the behavior of the RDF for particles whose response time scales with the inertial range time scales of the turbulence.

TURBULENCE-INDUCED RELATIVE VELOCITY OF DUST PARTICLES. I. IDENTICAL PARTICLES

We study the relative velocity of inertial particles suspended in turbulent flows and discuss implications for dust particle collisions in protoplanetary disks. We simulate a weakly compressible turbulent flow, evolving 14 particle species with friction timescale, tau_p, covering the entire range of scales in the flow. The particle Stokes numbers, St, measuring the ratio of tau_p to the Kolmogorov timescale, are in the range from ~0.1 to ~800. Using simulation results, we show that the model by Pan & Padoan (PP10) gives satisfactory predictions for the rms relative velocity between identical particles. The probability distribution function (PDF) of the relative velocity is found to be highly non-Gaussian. The PDF tails are well described by a 4/3 stretched exponential function for particles with tau_p ~ 1-2 T_L, where T_L is the Lagrangian correlation timescale, consistent with a prediction based on PP10. The PDF approaches Gaussian only for very large particles with tau_p >~ 54 T_L. We split particle pairs at given distances into two types with low and high relative speeds, referred to as continuous and caustic types, respectively, and compute their contributions to the collision kernel. Although amplified by the effect of clustering, the continuous contribution vanishes in the limit of infinitesimal particle distance, where the caustic contribution dominates. The caustic kernel per unit cross section rises rapidly as St increases toward ~1, reaches a maximum at tau_p ~ 2 T_L, and decreases as tau_p^{-1/2} for tau_p >> T_L.

Inertial particle relative velocity statistics in homogeneous isotropic turbulence

AbstractIn the present study, we investigate the scaling of relative velocity structure functions, of order two and higher, for inertial particles, both in the dissipation range and the inertial subrange using direct numerical simulations (DNS). Within the inertial subrange our findings show that contrary to the well-known attenuation in the tails of the one-point acceleration probability density function (p.d.f.) with increasing inertia (Bec et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 550, 2006, pp. 349–358), the opposite occurs with the velocity structure function at sufficiently large Stokes numbers. We observe reduced scaling exponents for the structure function when compared to those of the fluid, and correspondingly broader p.d.f.s, similar to what occurs with a passive scalar. DNS allows us to isolate the two effects of inertia, namely biased sampling of the velocity field, a result of preferential concentration, and filtering, i.e. the tendency for the inertial particle velocity to attenuate the velocity fluctuations in the fluid. By isolating these effects, we show that sampling is playing the dominant role for low-order moments of the structure function, whereas filtering accounts for most of the scaling behaviour observed with the higher-order structure functions in the inertial subrange. In the dissipation range, we see evidence of so-called ‘crossing trajectories’, the ‘sling effect’ or ‘caustics’, and find good agreement with the theory put forth by Wilkinson et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 97, 2006, 048501) and Falkovich &amp; Pumir (J. Atmos. Sci., vol. 64, 2007, 4497) for Stokes numbers greater than 0.5. We also look at the scaling exponents within the context of the model proposed by Bec et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 646, 2010, pp. 527–536). Another interesting finding is that inertial particles at low Stokes numbers sample regions of higher kinetic energy than the fluid particle field, the converse occurring at high Stokes numbers. The trend at low Stokes numbers is predicted by the theory of Chun et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 536, 2005, 219–251). This work is relevant to modelling the particle collision rate (Sundaram &amp; Collins, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 335, 1997, pp. 75–109), and highlights the interesting array of phenomena induced by inertia.
