An alarming number of 296 million individuals in Egypt have recently been diagnosed as HBV positive; because these two viruses share similar routes of transmission, about 10% of this population is also thought to be HIV positive. It is widely acknowledged that coinfection with HIV and HBV has a significant negative effect on the immune system and accelerates the loss of T-lymphocyte subpopulations, which are essential for immunological defense.
