Assessing the influence of financial fair play on sporting performance: A study of the Spanish league using a data envelopment analysis model

AbstractThe football industry stands as an important economic sector in numerous countries, sparking scholarly discussions on the multifaceted nature of interconnected objectives and the influence of financial, accounting, and management elements on athletic performance. This discussion has gained prominence following the implementation of Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations, which have substantially reshaped industry management practices. This study introduces two innovative models—financial and sporting—that employ data envelopment analysis (DEA) to evaluate the performance of Spanish league football clubs within the context of FFP regulations. These models illuminate a crucial aspect of sports economic theory: the balancing act between financial and sporting objectives. Moreover, our analysis explores the influence of FFP on the efficiency of the Spanish league by comparing club proximity to the best practice frontier before and after FFP implementation. Our findings uncover intriguing differentiations within the proposed models and across various club clusters, providing valuable insights into the nuanced interplay among finance, accounting, and sports management.

Post-hazard supply chain disruption: Predicting firm-level sales using graph neural network

Evaluating the damage caused by supply chain disruptions triggered by natural hazards has an important role in supply chain risk management. This study proposes a novel approach to predict annual sales change rates for firms post-hazard. The approach employs graph neural networks, a machine learning technique that considers both internal factors such as sales and number of employees and external factors such as inter-firm relations and damages incurred from hazards. The model was trained on firm and flood data from previous floods in Japan and was found to outperform baseline models that did not consider inter-firm relations. To address the model's explainability problem, we employed Explainable Artificial Intelligence techniques to identify the factors influencing sales post-disruption and analysed the importance of firms and trades in the supply chain from a spatial perspective. The findings highlight the crucial role of business partners in a firm's supply chain and the impact of distance between suppliers on a firm's sales. The study contributes to improved supply chain risk management practices in industry as well as government, ultimately enhancing supply chain resilience.

Bioaugmentation in Leachate Treatment: Enhancing Ammonia Nitrogen Elimination in US Landfills

Purpose: This research seeks to assess the quantitative effects of implementing bioaugmentation solutions within existing landfill leachate management systems. The study involves the analysis of different sites to gauge the influence on leachate composition, considering various industry management practices such as lagoons, tanks, sewer discharge, or off-site trucking. The primary objective is to examine changes in microbial communities within the leachate, specifically focusing on their impact on ammonia nitrogen elimination rates. The ultimate goal is to achieve lower levels of ammonia nitrogen before the discharge of leachate to publicly owned treatment works (POTW).Methodology: The research employs a comprehensive methodology that involves the examination of diverse landfill sites utilizing various industry management practices for leachate treatment. The analysis includes assessing leachate composition and the study evaluates effectiveness of bioaugmentation in enhancing ammonia elimination rates, considering different leachate treatment approaches and operating conditions. This involves a systematic comparison of outcomes across sites and management practices.Findings: The findings of this study indicate that bioaugmentation is an effective strategy for accelerating ammonia elimination rates in landfill leachate. The analysis reveals notable improvements in microbial communities, leading to reduced levels of ammonia nitrogen in the leachate prior to its discharge to POTW. The study highlights the versatility of bioaugmentation across different industry management practices, showcasing its potential benefits under varying operating conditions and treatment setups.Unique contributor to theory, policy and practice: Based on the study's outcomes, it is recommended that landfill operators and leachate management practitioners consider implementing bioaugmentation solutions to expedite ammonia elimination rates. The findings suggest that bioaugmentation is a cost-effective and fast-to-deploy solution that requires negligible capital expenditure. This approach has the potential to generate significant savings, especially in the face of a more stringent regulatory environment. The recommendations emphasize the adaptability and efficiency of bioaugmentation across a broad range of operating conditions within existing landfill leachate management infrastructure.

A SPHERICAL FUZZY BASED DECISION MAKING FRAMEWORK WITH EINSTEIN AGGREGATION FOR COMPARING PREPAREDNESS OF SMEs IN QUALITY 4.0

Researchers work hard to embrace technological changes and redefine the quality management as Quality 4.0 (Q 4.0). In this context, the purpose of the current work is twofold. First, it aims to compare the preparedness of the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) for sustaining in Q4. Second, it intends to propose a novel hybrid spherical fuzzy based multi-criteria group decision-making (MAGDM) framework with Einstein aggregation (EA). A real-life case study on six SMEs is carried out with the help of three experts. For aggregating the individual responses (using spherical fuzzy numbers or SFNs), EA is used. Then two very recent models such as Simple Ranking Process (SRP) and Symmetry Point of Criterion (SPC) are extended using SFN to rank the SMEs. Finally, the validation tests and sensitivity analysis are carried out. It is noted that the application of analytical tools, knowledge management and use of technology under the support and mentorship of visionary leadership are the key criteria for building up the capability to embrace Q 4.0. Interestingly, it is noted that medium scale firms are better prepared than small-scale enterprises. This work is apparently a first of its kind that focuses on SMEs for assessing their quality management practices in Industry 4.0 era.

Semantic data mining‐based decision support for quality assessment in steel industry

AbstractThis study evaluates quality management practices in Industry 4.0 in a specific case of steel manufacturing. We formulate a novel proposal based on Semantic Data Mining techniques a step towards knowledge‐driven decision support based on the industrial Six Sigma approach. In our research we combine machine learning classifiers, and explanation generation algorithms with the Six Sigma practice to automate the evaluation of quality of steel products and determine origins of their defects. We describe our original method, and provide evaluation of the results with real–life data from our industrial partner.

Assessment of environmental sustainability integration into higher education for future experts and leaders

The environmental and climate crisis is gaining priority among critical human concerns; therefore, environmental knowledge and sustainable solutions play a significant role and gaining global popularity as an academic discipline. Additionally, United Nations Sustainable Development Goal no. 4 acknowledges education's role in promoting sustainable development, sustainable lifestyles, human rights, social responsibility, circular economy, and greening our economy and society. In this paper new conceptual framework that focuses on systematically analyzing environmental sustainability integration in study programs and subjects is developed. The main aim is to reflect the conceptual basis of education related to environmental sustainability topics such as sustainable development, social responsibility, circular economy, ecology, environmental protection, and greening to boost future environmental management practices in industry and services. Defining the level of integration of environmental and sustainability-related topics is divided by research field classification and study cycles (BSc, MSc, PhD). The specific added value of the developed conceptual framework is reflected by defining cross-sections and inter-and trans-disciplinary of sustainability topics integrated within specific programs and subjects. The conceptual framework was tested by assessing 1051 programs in progress in Slovenia. It was revealed that the highest share of study programs has an intermediate level of environmental sustainability with 2–3 subjects (392 study programs). These are represented mainly by integrating environmental protection, ecology, and “greening” but less with circular economy and social responsibility. Significant differences among specific study programs and study fields reflect that young intellectuals will not be equally educated and qualified for future managerial challenges. Master students gain the best insight into core sustainability and environmental topics needed for future environmental managers.

The article implements the idea of mediatization as a process of transformation of the mass communication industry. Nowadays, the current system of mass communication is under the pressure of digital transit, which is transgressive in nature and breaks traditional business patterns, requires business administration to make mental changes in thinking and management practices, and creates the highest level of tension among media managers. The article attempts to conceptualize (through the analysis of industrial points of tension: between television and online video - players of the cross-media dimension) some aspects of the digital transformation of the media industry and industrial management practices. Behind this transformation is the conflict between the digital environment generated by the relatively free development of the Internet and the purposefully organized and institutionalized state-controlled media.

Toward Programmable DOCSIS 4.0 Networks: Adaptive Modulation in OFDM Channels

The sixth generation of DOCSIS standard is currently under development for the provisioning of multi-Gbps services over cable networks. Building upon DOCSIS 3.1 (D3.1), DOCSIS 4.0 (D4) introduces several features including full-duplex transmission and extended-spectrum, which benefit from subcarrier-level OFDM modulation configurations to adapt to varying channel conditions. To exploit the full potential of D4, we propose a softwarized adaptive subcarrier modulation management framework. The optimization system consists of (i) a clustering mechanism that classifies CMs (Cable Modems) with a similar channel condition into the same group using a sparsified K-means algorithm and (ii) an efficient profile generation mechanism to balance achieved channel throughput and packet error rate within the same group. Then, we implement key elements of the softwarized system using a virtualized network function in our DOCSIS experimental testbed that enables the programmatic control of OFDM channels using D4 performance parameters. Our experimental results show that the proposed optimization function offers significant improvements in OFDM channel throughput over current industry management practices. Furthermore, we confirm via simulations that using a novel clustering algorithm for the classification of CM populations and a new bit-loading method measurably enhances channel performance in large-scale distributed deployment scenarios.

The role of high-performance people management practices in Industry 4.0: the case of medium-sized Spanish firms

Purpose: This paper wants to build the case for the key role of high-performance people management practices in the development of I4.0 in SMEs. The research upon which this paper is based wants to prove that the consolidation of those practices should be a priority for any company willing to embark in this journey. The paper deals specifically with medium-sized Spanish firms which, on top, are already having significant issues with digitization.Design/methodology/approach: The paper starts by digging into the literature to see how past technologies have impacted productivity, followed by a review of the material available on digitization and Industry 4.0. It moves on to explore the relationship between people management practices, productivity and innovation. Finally, the focus is placed on Spanish medium-sized companies, understanding their current levels of consolidation of high-performance people management practices as well as digitization. With all this information, several propositions are posited for validation using the Delphi methodology.Findings: I4.0 is, at its core, about productivity improvements through business process and business model innovation. People management practices are found to be strongly correlated with both productivity and innovation. It has also been found that Spanish medium-sized firms already have a significant initial gap compared to those of other OECD countries not only in productivity, but also people management practices and digitization. The experts seem to agree on the key role of people management practices and that they should be a high priority for any firm seriously thinking about industry 4.0. This is not to say that strategy or leadership will not play a paramount role in any digital transformation, but to emphasize the fact that the normally-forgotten people management practices will be important enablers in this process.Originality/value: It is believed that this is a topic that has been mostly neglected in the I4.0 literature. In that sense, the findings of this paper could be relevant for small and medium-sized businesses embarking on the industry 4.0 journey. This will entail a significant investment of time and money and, if the key role of people management practices is not on the radar screen, it may have significant implications for the success of those ventures.

Emerging human resource management practices in Industry 4.0

PurposeThe study aims to offer a fresh perspective on best management practices to encourage innovation and learning in the firm to keep abreast with and adopt industry 4.0 advancements. The human resource (HR) department must take proactive steps to adopt these technologies and update itself in terms of necessary skill. The study highlights the importance of human resource management practices in industry 4.0.Design/methodology/approachThe paper discusses the transforming role of HR 4.0 in a disrupting economy with the help of the conceptual framework. This paper illustrates how the new role of HR boosts engagement by designing the best personalized benefits, trusting teams, collaborating and providing personal development, which make a great case for a successful retention strategy.FindingsThis paper reveals how organizations can ensure their success and survival in this age of technological disruptions through their people. Top management must be ready for a new transformed role of the HR through innovative HR practices.Originality/valueThis paper provides plenty of information to interest practicing managers, researchers and students in HR management, organizational behavior and industrial relations.

Abstract : The purpose of this study was to description the management practices of industry (prakerin) in DKV skill competetion of vocational High School 5 of Bengkulu City: (1) to know the description of the planning Practice the Working Industrial (Prakerin) in DKV skill competetion of vocational High School 5 of Bengkulu, (2) to know the description of the implementation Practice the Working Industrial (Prakerin) in DKV skill competetion of vocational High School 5 of Bengkulu, (3) to know the description the evaluation of Practice the Working Industrial (Prakerin) in DKV skill competetion of vocational High School 5 of Bengkulu. The methode of this research is a qualitative descriptive study. The subjectts of this research were principals, vice principals, students and taechers at Vocational High School 5 of Bengkulu, and DU/DI (user), using data collection techniques such as observation, interview and documentation study, analyzed using with reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results and conclusion the research showed that the: (1) planning has been implemented fairly well starting from the curriculum, work program, prakerin administration, financing, socialization, and student counselor teacher, (2) implementation of prakerin runs properly but some obstacles are found such as students having difficulties when operating new tools, lack of time discipline. (3) evaluation have been undertaken by prakerin activity providers ranging from assesment, student reports to evaluation. Evaluation results indicate the need for follow-up on some finding such as the need to involve DU/DI parties in relation to available facilities as a place of practice for student where the school difficulties in the procurement of such facilities. Impact of Management Practices in Industries in the Industrial – Free – Trade Zones in Douala, Littoral Region of Cameroon: “Challenges and Prospects”

In Cameroon of late, there is growing consciencious that the deleterious impacts of industrial activities on safety health and environmental quality has motivated government and industries to adopt environmental management practices such as the EMSs and EMA, that is, Environmental Management Systems, and Environmental Management Accounting respectively at the least. This paper however, examines the implementation of EMSs and EMA amongst others in industries in the Industrial –Free – Trade Zones of the South West and Littoral Regions of Cameroon that interact with its environment which has been affected by the effluents emanating from industrial activities.This paper also presents an overview of various initiatives like policies that have been crafted by the government of Cameroon to address the problems of industrial activity such as pollution etc. It also seeks to prescrible recommendations which could be used to save the regions, from industrial pollution. After the participation of Cameroon in the Earth’s Summit in Rio de Janerio, Brazil (1992), and ever since the publication of the Brunditland Commission’s Landmark Report ‘‘Our Common Future’’, in (1987), the government has taken significant steps to overhaul its institutional framework vis – à – vis the regulation of industrial pollution.Through a questionnaire based survey carried but from January to July 2016 with the sampled industries in the Industrial – Free – Trade – Zones of the South West and Littoral Regions of Cameroon, data was collected. This paper also aims at addressing motivational factors, implementation hurdles as well as benefits accrued by these industries as a result of adapting environmental management systems in their management practices generally. Studies also support that many benefits arise as a result of EMSs and EMA enforcement, but the paradox is the plethora of hurdles that still persist in industries. Against this background, this paper concludes by prescribing recommendations that seek to promote management practices such as EMSs and EMA in industries in Industrial – Free – Trade – Zones in Cameroon.

Environmental management practices in industries of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) from 2011 to 2015

Abstract This aimed to identify and analyze the environmental management in the industry carried out in Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) in the period from 2011 to 2015, with the aid of scientific literature published in the Scopus database. Due to the expansion of the bloc’s development, these countries presented a high potential to impact the environment. Therefore, this is relevant because it identifies trends about the Environment Management Practices that have been followed in industries of BRICS, increasing the theoretical allowance for discussions concerning Environment Management Practices in these countries. Consequently, a survey on environmental management was conducted using the keyword industrial environmental management practices and the name of each country. Besides that, a second quest was added with the term case study to refine the results. We found out that China, India, South Africa and Brazil have been studying solutions for the CO2 emissions by employing different environmental management practices. In addition, in the studies on China, India and Brazil, environmental management recurrently approached topics concerning the supply and water quality, the regulatory standards of environmental management and the practice of Green Supply Chain Management. However, we did not find papers concerning the environmental management in Russia through the employed methodology. We concluded that China, India and Brazil tend to present papers on the issue of environmental management (in English and in the database, from which they were gathered) because these countries show a more sustainable development, thus publishing a higher number of researches in this field, whereas Russia and South Africa do not follow this trend due to a weaker environmental engagement. With regard to that, it is suggested that further studies investigate the environmental management in other developing and developed countries, which would allow to draw a comparison with other groups.

Examining the Feasibilities of Industry 4.0 for the Hospitality Sector with the Lens of Management Practice

Industry 4.0 and its impact in the manufacturing sector are well documented. However, the service sector is understudied, and it is also facing the challenges of mass customization, digital enhancement, smart work environment, and efficient supply chain. The aim of this study is to fill this research gap by exploring the issues of Industry 4.0 in the service sector, with cases in the hospitality industry. All the challenges of Industry 4.0 require continuous innovation and learning, which is dependent on people and the enterprise’s capabilities. Appropriate management approaches can play a vital role in the development of dynamic capabilities, and an effective learning and innovation environment. This paper proposes a framework of management practices which can promote the environment of innovation and learning in an organization, and hence facilitate business to match the pace of Industry 4.0 by facilitating technology acceptance e.g., digital enhancements and implementation of cyber physical systems (CPS). This study integrates the literature with logical beliefs to suggest the appropriate management practices for Industry 4.0. It represents one of the initial attempts to draw research attention towards the important role of management practices in Industry 4.0, as most of the recent studies have been restricted to the technological aspects. Semi-structured interviews of hospitality employees are conducted to explore the management practices suitable for meeting the challenges of Industry 4.0, specifically for informing the service sector.

Sustainability: The train has left the station

ABSTRACTThe sustainability movement has more influence over company and government climate change actions than any treaty, law or regulation could possibly have, and results in quicker, measurable actions.The sustainability movement is alive and well, and will continue to grow despite the outcry over some countries backpedaling from the Paris Accord. When one stops to consider just how much action companies from around the world have taken toward sustainability one cannot help but be amazed that so much was done without treaties, laws and regulations to force compliance. The primary driver of action is peer pressure—that which is derived from the actions of industry, and not the actions of government. This movement, found under a company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) banner, will continue to grow by virtue of the continuous adoption of sustainability reporting, and in particular, supply chain reporting, benchmarking and risk management practices of industry, and the adoption of energy efficient (EE) projects. These actions have already resulted in significant positive changes to private company and government behavior, company value, lower emissions, greater operational efficiency, and competitive advantage. One could argue that peer pressure is much more effective than any treaty, laws, or regulations could possibly be. But, it should be noted that the term “climate change” remains a contentious issue and companies would be wise to refer to all related actions as sustainability.

AMALAN PENAMBAHBAIKAN KUALITI BERTERUSAN DALAM INSTITUSI PENDIDIKAN

With the increasing demand in improving quality education system, the Malaysian Education Ministry has recently adopted a policy aimed at practicing continuous quality improvement (CQI) at all levels and across all states. The key goal is to achieve changes in practice which improve education outcomes. This paper includes the systematic literature review to describe the scenario of quality management practices in industry and quality improvement approaches at various levels in education systems. Several identified themes were discovered ie the importance of continuous improvement programs, quality management systems and readiness to implement the quality improvement practices. Future research should include the psychology aspects in testing the effectiveness of quality improvement practices.

The first article on ‘Impact of Innovative Strategic Human Resource Management Practices on the Performance of Small and Medium Enterprises’– A Case Study of Karnataka by B.K.Sathyanarayana and Nawal Kishor aims at evaluating the application and implementation of Strategic Human Resource Management (SHRM) practices for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and to examine its impact on organisational performance. Six hundred & forty SMEs in and around the Bangalore District from both Manufacturing and Services Sector responded to the various Strategic Human Resource Management drivers and organizational drivers and it was inferred that there exists a positive significant correlation between these variables. The next article on sustainable development best management practices in the food processing industry by Uma CS, Basavaraj & Prasanna Joshi attempts to study sustainable development that involves issues like organic farming, food safety and food quality. This paper highlights on the concept of green food system and the approach of good agricultural practices (GAP) which is a new concept that stresses on international quality standards, concerns and commitments about food production, food safety and security, environment sustainability of agriculture. Quality management is equally important in the food industry. Food processing is a capital intensive, water consuming and a polluting industry. Therefore this paper also studies the management practices in this industry to reduce water wastage, ensuring food quality so the concept of green growth can be achieved. It also throws light on the various Governmental laws and regulations passed to control pollution and ensure food quality and health of the people.
