Problems of precipitation treatment in closed water management systems of industrial enterprises

The article is devoted to solving urgent problems of creating and improving closed water management systems of industrial enterprises. An overview and detailed analysis of the implementation of the federal program “Waste” in the existing regional centers of the Russian Federation is provided. During the analysis, the authors identified and solved the following tasks: justification of the need for the creation of closed water management systems (ZSVH); determination of the subject composition required for the development of SPM; selection of process diagrams and corresponding equipment. The article illustrates the experience of implementing the federal program “Waste” in various regions of the Russian Federation, which testifies to the cooperation of enterprises where industrial waste is generated with enterprises where it is processed and used as raw materials or disposed of. Based on the consideration of the types of industrial effluents and the directions of activities of enterprises, the authors came to the conclusion about the advisability of special treatment of industrial effluents before disposal directly at the site of their formation to obtain a dried final product, which should be carried out in accordance with regulatory requirements in the field of waste management.

Effects of Fish Waste Management Practice on Environmental Pollution in Tanzania: A Case Study of Kivukoni Ferry Fish Market

Globally, waste arising from human and animal activities that are normally solid and are discarded as useless or unwanted are broadly defined as solid waste. It includes municipal garbage, industrial and commercial wastes, sewerage slug, waste of agricultural and animal husbandry, demolition waste and mining residues. The study aimed to identify strategies deployed by the management at Kivukoni Ferry Fish market. The study adopted case study research design with mixed approaches. The study used purposive and probability sampling techniques. The study used Slovenes formulae to obtain sample size of 160 respondents from target population of 213 respondents. The study used questionnaire and interview to obtain data needed. The study findings indicates that 77.1% of respondents agreed that management of Kivukoni Ferry fish market provide clean water for fish processing and fish waste collection bins. The study concluded that, Kivukoni fish market provide clean water for fish processing, also inadequate provision tools for fish waste collection and poor logistics for fish waste transportation from Kivukoni Ferry fish market to Pugu damp. In additional to that, poor market infrastructure led the market to produce odor smell, immediately in hot weather condition, this situation threaten the environment and the safety of workers and community at large. The study recommended that, Kivukoni Ferry fish market management should establish designated waste collection points within the market to streamline the disposal process and should develop a reliable logistics system for the timely transportation of fish waste from the market to Pugu dump.

Upscaling of Copper Slag-Based Geopolymer to 3D Printing Technology

Additive manufacturing using cement has evolved rapidly in recent decades, revolutionizing the construction industry. This technology automates building structures through computer-aided design, offering benefits such as reduced material waste, optimized material distribution, and the ability to use composite materials. This paper aims to examine the potential of using copper-slag-based geopolymers in 3D printing. Geopolymers have gained popularity as an alternative and more energy-efficient material to traditional building materials, while copper slag allows for reducing and managing mining industry waste. Moreover, samples formed in molds based on the same material were produced to evaluate the method of manufacturing on the mechanical properties of geopolymers. This paper presents an evaluation of the mechanical properties including the compressive, flexural, and shear strength of the layered material. It reveals promising results, with strength development mainly observed within the first 14 days. The results show that the compressive strength after 28 days of curing is 46.4 MP and 42.1 MPa for formed and printed samples, respectively. Furthermore, the average bending strength value ranges between 7.4 MPa and 7.8 MPa, regardless of the bending direction and forming method. The obtained results show that printed geopolymers demonstrate adequate layer bonding, confirming the profitability of the 3D printing technology. This research confirms that 3D printing technology enables the use of geopolymer binder materials based on copper slag, which opens the door to sustainable alternatives in construction practices.

The preliminary study of antifungal and antibacterial properties of wine by-products

Background: Nowadays, the search for novel alternative antimicrobials has gained significant popularity. This surge is driven by the vast array of adverse effects of synthetic antimicrobials on human health and the environment. Consequently, the study of new natural sources of comparably ecologically safe and simultaneously effective antimicrobials is extremely important. In this context, the interest in wine by-products is growing due to their diverse beneficial properties. Traditionally considered industrial waste, wine by-products now offer promising opportunities. Notably, the unique climatic and geographical features of Armenian black grape varieties, such as Areni sev, make their by-products an attractive subject for study, with potential applications in agriculture. Objective: The study aims to investigate the antifungal and antibacterial properties of wine by-products obtained from the Areni sev grape variety. Methods: For the extraction of bioactive compounds, frozen and dry samples were homogenized. The maceration was performed in 70% hydroethanolic solution after incubation on a magnetic stirrer at room temperature. The obtained extracts were filtered through a 0.45 µm filter and evaluated for antifungal and antibacterial activity by disco-diffusion method. Results: Hydroethanolic extracts of wine by-products have exhibited antifungal and antibacterial activities. Specifically, the frozen samples demonstrated low antifungal activity against the Penicillium canescens with a 7.5 mm growth inhibition zone. In contrast, dried samples showed no antifungal activity. The highest antifungal activity was observed against Aspergillus niger with growth inhibition zones of 18 mm (frozen samples) and 15 mm (dried samples), respectively. Regarding antibacterial activity, wine by-product hydroethanolic extracts showed extremely low efficacy. Notably, frozen samples exhibited an 8 mm growth inhibition zone against Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens and 6.35 mm against Xanthomonas vesicatoria. Extracts from dried samples demonstrated a 6.35 mm inhibition zone against Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens and a 7 mm growth inhibition zone against Xanthomonas vesicatoria. Conclusion: Summarizing the results of the conducted experiments, it can be concluded that the used wine by-product derived from Areni sev grape has demonstrated notable antimicrobial activities, with a stronger emphasis on antifungal properties. The extracts obtained from frozen samples exhibited greater efficacy than those derived from dried samples. Future research plans include a more detailed investigation of Areni sev grape wine by-products. Keywords: wine by-product, grape pomace, Areni sev, bioactive compounds, antimicrobial properties

Process safety in bioenergy with carbon capture and storage systems (BECCS)

AbstractIn response to the climate crisis, the United States has embarked on an ambitious program to achieve 100% carbon‐free electricity generation by 2035 and net‐zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The implementation of bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) systems is an essential component of that strategy. BECCS is broadly defined as the utilization of biomass energy (from the processing of solids, liquids, or vapors) with the capture of carbon dioxide and subsequent permanent storage in a deep geological formation. There are numerous potential technologies and flowsheets for implementing BECCS, and the supply chains rely upon support from the agricultural, forestry, and solid waste industries. Inherent in BECCS systems are the hazards associated with combustible dusts, spontaneous ignition and smoldering of combustible solids, flammable liquids, flammable vapors and gases, toxic gases, and more. For BECCS to be deployed commercially across the United States, it is imperative that process safety risks are controlled. A risk‐based process safety (RBPS) program can help manage the risks of a BECCS facility and minimize process safety incidents. In this paper, we present two representative bioenergy technologies as mini‐case studies to illustrate the range of process hazards encountered. Process safety strategies required by regulation are briefly reviewed and potential gaps are identified. We then demonstrate how RBPS can be implemented in a practical and effective manner to fill the gaps.

The Impact of Carbon Emissions Trading Policy on Regional Economy and Pollution Reductions in Chinese Provinces

Carbon emissions trading policy is an important tool to achieve carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals. In order to explore the effectiveness of carbon emissions trading policy, this paper adopts the difference-in-differences model to analyze the effects of China’s pilot policy on regional economic development and pollution reductions. The results show that carbon trading policy can significantly promote economic development and reduce total carbon emissions, industrial SO2 emissions and solid wastes production of pilot regions. Further research finds that there is significant regional difference in policy effectiveness, with the policy more effective in western areas. In addition to direct effects, carbon trading policy could exert an indirect effect on carbon emissions, air quality, industrial solid wastes and regional economic development by optimizing energy consumption structures and industrial structures and increasing technological investment. This result verifies the “Porter hypothesis”. China should improve the construction of national carbon trading markets, covering more industries, considering the regional differences and negative spillover effect.

The Role of Yeast in the Valorisation of Food Waste

The implementation of the circular bioeconomy is now widely accepted as a critical step towards reducing the environmental burden of industrial waste and reducing the impact of this waste on climate change. The valorisation of waste using microorganisms is an attractive and fast-developing strategy capable of achieving meaningful improvements in the sustainability of the biotechnology industry. Yeasts are a powerful chassis for developing valorisation strategies and key opportunities. Thus, this study examines how waste from the food sector can be effectively targeted for valorisation by yeast. Yeasts themselves are critically important elements in the production of food and brewing, and thus, the valorisation of waste from these processes is further reviewed. Policy and regulatory challenges that may impact the feasibility of industrial applications of yeast systems in the valorisation of food waste streams are also discussed.

Production of Biodiesel from Industrial Sludge: Recent Progress, Challenges, Perspective

This study investigated biodiesel production from industrial sludge, focusing on the feasibility and sustainability of converting waste materials into renewable energy sources. This study combines a comparative analysis of various sludge-based biodiesel production methods, highlighting both their environmental benefits and economic potential. Utilizing physical, chemical, and biological pre-treatments, this study optimizes biodiesel yield while assessing the impact of each method on the overall production efficiency. Key findings revealed that industrial sludge provides a viable feedstock, contributes to waste reduction, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. The novel contributions of this study include a detailed economic assessment of biodiesel production from sludge and a comprehensive environmental impact evaluation that quantifies the potential sustainability benefits. Limitations related to scale-up processes are identified, and solutions to overcome these issues are discussed to improve industrial feasibility. Furthermore, the integration of sludge-based biodiesel production with other renewable energy systems has been explored as a future avenue to enhance energy efficiency and sustainability. This research contributes to a significant scientific niche by addressing scalability challenges and proposing future perspectives for sustainable biodiesel production from industrial waste.

Mechanism and optimization of sintered ultra-lightweight aggregates with sand washing slurry and red mud

Sand washing slurry, red mud, and waste sawdust are major solid wastes produced by the construction, mining, and wood processing industries, respectively. Their accumulation poses significant environmental hazards and results in substantial wastage of resources. This study utilized a novel rapid roasting method to prepare ultra-lightweight ceramsite aggregates (ULC) using sand washing slurry, red mud, and sawdust as raw materials. A new process for preparing ultra-lightweight clay aggregates (ULCA) utilizing waste sand washing sludge is proposed, achieving a utilization rate of the wash sand sludge exceeding 60%. Ultra-lightweight clay aggregates with a loose bulk density of 264.3 kg/m3 were produced. The influence of material formulation on the performance of ultra-lightweight clay aggregates was studied. The phase changes and expansion mechanism of the clay aggregates were revealed from microscopic and chemical perspectives. The synergistic effect of red mud and sawdust significantly enhanced the foaming effect of the ceramsite (i.e., porosity), reducing its loose bulk density while slowing the rate of strength reduction. Additionally, increasing the content of red mud and sawdust promoted ceramsite expansion. When the mass ratio of sand washing slurry, red mud, and sawdust was 29: 12: 1, with Fe2O3 content at 13% and sawdust content at 3%, preheating at 500°C for 5 minutes followed by roasting at 1150°C for 5 minutes produced ultra-lightweight ceramsite with a compressive strength of 1.7 MPa. This study provides a promising method for producing ULC from industrial solid wastes.

Microorganisms of solid waste as an opportunity for waste disposal and increasing environmental sustainability in the south of Kazakhstan

The study is devoted to the problem of processing the organic waste that is generated as a result of paper, textiles and other industries production as well as food waste. The growth of economic activity in Kazakhstan has resulted in a significant challenge with regard to industrial waste management. The accumulation of waste on the territory of the country has reached 31.72 billion tonnes, comprising approximately 2.5 billion tonnes of hazardous waste, 50 million tonnes of phosphorus-containing waste, over 2.5 million tonnes of lead-zinc waste and more than 120 million tonnes of solid domestic waste. The study object was the Shymkent-Kokys polygons. According to the research carried out, it was determined that the titer of microorganisms of the studied groups is 1–10 CFU/g in the soils selected around the garbage in the area of the Shymkent landfill. The titer of microorganisms in the soil horizons was high at a depth of 20–30 cm and the titer were 109 cells/mL. The structure of the soil microbiome obtained around the Shymkent Waste Landfill consists of actinomycetes, micromycetes, heterotrophic bacteria, nitrifying, nitrogen-fixing bacteria, enterobacteria, as well as algae and protozoa. It was found that strains KPA1, KPA2 Pseudomonas sp. strains KPA3, KPA4, KPA5 Bacillus sp. isolated from the soils of the Shymkent-Kokys landfill are able to recycle domestic waste with a high content of cellulose and organic substances up to 95%–97%. The findings can be used to develop more effective organic cellulosic waste management strategies and improve the environmental sustainability of various industries.

High-Performance Concrete from Rubber and Shell Waste Materials: Experimental and Computational Analysis

Waste and its environmental impact have driven the search for sustainable solutions across various industries, including construction. This study explores the incorporation of solid waste in the production of eco-friendly structural concrete, aiming to reduce pollution and promote ecological and sustainable construction practices. In this context, two types of eco-friendly concrete were produced using marine shells and recycled rubber as waste materials and compared with conventional concrete through experimental and computational approaches. The results demonstrated that the concrete with marine shells achieved a compressive strength of 32.4 MPa, 26.5% higher than conventional concrete, and a 1% reduction in weight. In contrast, the recycled rubber concrete exhibited a compressive strength of 22.5 MPa, with a 2 MPa decrease compared to conventional concrete, but a 4.3% reduction in density. Computational analysis revealed that porosity affects Young’s modulus, directly resulting in a reduction in the maximum achievable strength. This work demonstrates that it is feasible to produce eco-friendly structural concrete through the proper integration of industrial waste, contributing to decarbonization and waste valorization.

Upcycling iron slag into a monolithic catalyst has led to low‐cost heterogeneous catalytic ozonation (HCO) strategies for water treatment. The primary industrial challenges are the low chemical oxygen demand (COD) reduction rate in treating authentic wastewater and difficulties sustaining close‐loop reaction cycles. In this study, we present a monolithic catalyst transformed from low‐cost iron oxide scale slag (IOSM) for highly efficient, sustainable ozone catalysis. The IOSM, constituted of 59.70% Fe2O3 and 40.30% Fe3O4, effectively decomposes ozone into superoxide radicals (·O2⁻) through a close‐loop cyclic reaction facilitated by interfacial charge transfer. This mechanism enables super‐fast degradation of 100 mg·L⁻¹ tetracycline at ozone concentrations below 1.00 mg·L⁻¹ in just four minutes, with the iron leaching merely at 59 μg·L‐1 after 10 cycles. In tests with authentic antibiotic wastewater, the IOSM‐based HCO system achieves a record‐breaking 81.70% COD reduction within two hours. This research underscores the potential of upcycling industrial waste into highly effective ozone catalysts for sustainable practices in wastewater treatment.

Comprehensive performance evaluation of steam generating heat pumps for industrial waste heat recovery

Steam generating heat pump (SGHP) is a key technology for industrial decarbonization. For comprehensive evaluation of the feasibility and reliability of SGHP in different industrial sector, the work develops a thorough evaluation model for assessing the performance of SGHP by considering waste heat recovery, CO2 trading value, and pollutant emission cost, in addition to the conventional evaluation criteria. This work presents a thorough comparison of the thermodynamic performance and sustainability of various types of SGHPs across different industrial sector. Additionally, the conflicting relationships between the coefficient of performance (COP) and exergy efficiency are balanced through the application of the technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS). The results show that all the indexes of SGHP connected to an open heat pump (SGHPO) with different application scenarios are higher than those of SGHP connected to a flash tank (SGHPF). At the most unfavorable operating condition of the system, the COP minimum value is 1.31 and the exergy efficiency minimum value is 20.42%. These results indicate that replacing the coal-fired boiler with SGHP is feasible and the work could provide theoretical guidance for optimal design and equipment manufacture.

Sustainable Livelihood in Post-Disaster Tourism: Lesson Learned from Merapi Tourism Site

This research aims to explore the practice of the Sustainable Livelihood Tourism Framework (SLTF) in post-disaster management in the Mount Merapi area, Sleman, Yogyakarta. The focus of SLTF achievement in this study encompasses ecological, economic, sociocultural, and institutional dimensions. Research on the SLTF has indeed become a significant focus in tourism studies. However, most of these studies are confined to a single research methodology, resulting in limited scope and a lack of comprehensive discussion. This study used a mixed-method approach with an explanatory sequential design. The study found that tourism positively impacts the increase of economic activities in the community. However, on the ecological side, tourism presence degrades environmental quality due to issues such as carbon emissions, industrial waste, climate change, the greenhouse effect, illegal logging, and illegal mining. Furthermore, other policies were identified, such as mineral water mining permits that degrade the environment and the establishment of landfill sites in the Kaliurang area, which spoils the natural beauty. Tourism practices also have a negative impact on institutional aspects, as the community perceives government policies as too complex and not meeting their expectations. Lastly, in the socio-cultural aspect, tourism preserves traditional values, as tourists tend to respect them. This mixed-method approach underscores the need for balanced strategies that address environmental concerns while maximizing economic benefits, improving institutional involvement, and supporting socio-cultural enhancement.

Technology of production of aluminosilicate refractories for units processing fluorinated waste

The aluminium production process through the electrolysis of cryolite-alumina melts involves a series of interconnected, sequential, and parallel technological operations, each defined by a specific level of engineering and technological advancement. The development of the modern aluminum industry is closely tied to the adoption of resource-efficient and environmentally friendly technologies, which focus on recycling secondary materials and industrial waste. Fluorinated carbon-based materials release fluorine into the gas phase at relatively low temperatures when heated, and in thermal units processing fluorinated waste, this fluorine, along with alkali metals, will remain in the gas phase. To enhance the durability of furnace linings against the corrosive atmosphere, refractories with the highest possible density (low porosity) and a high concentration of mullite in the matrix (the finely ground component of the batch) are required. These properties can only be achieved in refractory products produced by the semi-dry pressing method, which ensures high grain packing density and leads to the formation of a ceramic mullite bond after firing.

Waste management system: sanitary-epidemiological and environmental aspects

Introduction. Despite the positive trends in the field of industrial and consumer waste management, issues related to the legal regulation of activities to eliminate objects of accumulated damage to the environment and its relationship with activities to eliminate unauthorized landfills remain unresolved. A separate and important problematic aspect is the assignment of waste to a certain hazard class and their subsequent accounting and neutralization. The study aims to consider the established practice of using sanitary-epidemiological and environmental legislation in the management of industrial and consumer waste, including in assessing their toxicity. Materials and methods. The authors conducted the study using an information and analytical method for analyzing regulatory documentation and scientific publications from the databases Elibrary, Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, Techexpert, Consultant, etc. They also compared the topical issues of assessing the toxicity of production and consumption waste and identified the specifics of the methodology for calculating the amount of damage as a result of unauthorized waste disposal. Results. It has been established that one of the optimal solutions in the issue of assessing the hazard class of waste may be to bring the criteria for their classification according to the degree of toxicity to uniformity, as well as the development of a single document carried out by institutions regardless of departmental subordination. Studies conducted to determine the amount of damage as a result of unauthorized disposal of production and consumption waste and to establish the hazard class of waste must comply with the requirements of uniformity of measurements and accreditation in the national system, respectively. To correctly calculate the amount of harm, you need to use the value of the mass of waste with the same hazard class. The availability of separate documents in sanitary-epidemiological and environmental legislation can significantly affect the calculation of the amount of harm due to various methods of determining the hazard class of waste, as well as the timeliness of identifying the long-term impact of waste on the environment and public health. Limitations. The study is limited to the analysis of law enforcement practice in the field of waste management, as well as the results of research in domestic and international literature. The analysis will allow researchers to consider non-obvious and controversial issues in the planning of activities. Conclusion. Updating documents on the establishment of the hazard class of waste should be carried out considering law enforcement practice. The absence of duality in compliance with the established requirements in both the field of environmental and sanitary-epidemiological legislation can be a guarantee of the reliability and truthfulness of research. This will allow you to make the right management decisions. Ethics. The study does not require the submission of the conclusion of the biomedical ethics committee.
