Estimation of the level of anthropogenic impact based on the determination of radionuclides and heavy metals in sediments taken from Rybnik reservoir, Poland.

The aim of the study was to estimate the degree of anthropogenic risk by evaluating the level of the contamination of sediments collected from the Rybnik reservoir. The results of the determination of radionuclides (137Cs, 40K, 228Th, 228Ra, 226Ra, 210Pb, 238U) and heavy metals (Zn, Cd, Pb, Cu, Cr, Ni) were presented. The Rybnik reservoir is located in a highly urbanised area, the Lower Silesian Voivodeship in Poland. Radionuclides (137Cs, 40K, 228Th, 228Ra, 226Ra, 210Pb, 238U) were measured using gamma spectrometry. The heavy metal (Zn, Cd, Pb, Cu, Ni and Cr) content was determined using an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrophotometer (ICP-OES). The classification of sediment pollution was made on the basis of geochemical and ecotoxicological indices. Radioactivity was varied with the highest for 40K (more than 200Bq·kg-1). The concentrations for the remaining radionuclides were mostly below 20Bq·kg-1. At the inlet zone (no. 9) an increase in radioactivity of each radioisotope was observed. The values of heavy metals from the lowest to the highest total amount in the sediments were as follows: Cd < Cr < Pb < Ni < Cu < Zn. The sediments of the reservoir are largely contaminated with Cu, but the sediments generally are contaminated to an average degree. Most pollutants accumulate in the inlet zone and near the dam wall. The content of artificial radionuclides, as well as the geochemical and ecological indicators used, can serve as an indicator of the level of anthropopressure in the vicinity of the Rybnik reservoir.

Goat hair as a bioindicator of environmental contaminants and adrenal activation during vertical transhumance.

Autochthonous breeds of livestock are considered a pivotal genetic resource for agriculture, rural development, and food and nutrition security. In the Italian Alps, local livestock breeds are maintained using the traditional alpine farming system based on vertical transhumance, with the use of alpine pastures from late spring to autumn and indoor housing with a hay-based diet for the remaining part of the year. Because of their tight link with the territory of origin, local breeds could be used to biomonitor environmental contaminations. Moreover, animal welfare should also be monitored during transhumance in animals, which are exposed to a sudden farming system change and different types of stressors. For these reasons, this investigation hypothesized that the content of trace elements, heavy metals, and cortisol in the hair of goats changes during vertical transhumance, possibly reflecting different dietary contents and activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. This study aimed to assess the response of an Italian local goat breed to the change from indoor housing to alpine pasture in summer in terms of hair concentrations of (i) trace elements and heavy metals and (ii) cortisol. The regrown hair of Frisa goats was monthly collected for 2 consecutive years (n = 10 for heavy metals and trace elements and n = 6 for cortisol in 2021, n = 17 for both analyses in 2022), once before vertical transhumance and twice after that event. Hair was then analyzed for trace elements, heavy metals, and cortisol by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrophotometer (ICP-OES) and enzyme immunoassay (EIA), respectively. Data were analyzed by multilevel models. The results showed an increase in As content during alpine pasture (p < 0.01), probably reflecting the soil and water As contents of the grazing area, while Mg, Zn, and Al (p < 0.01) followed the opposite trend, decreasing in the second month after vertical transhumance. Hair cortisol concentrations increased during 2 months of alpine pasture (p < 0.001), indicating an increase in the activation of the HPA axis, in agreement with previous studies. Future investigations can consider a longer study period and the development of ad hoc animal welfare indicators.

Pollution indices and ecological risk assessment of major elements and trace metals in the marine sediment of the western Nigeria continental shelf, Gulf of Guinea

The Gulf of Guinea is known to be highly productive owing to its ecological and economical significance. Given its importance, detailed evaluation of the major elements (Fe, Mn, Ca, Mg, Na, Al, K and Si) and trace metals (Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr, Ni, As, Sc, V, Th and U) were analyzed from the sediment core within this basin for the first time. This study aims to determine their baseline composition, pollution level, and ecological risk. Analyses of these metals using inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrophotometer (ICP-OES) with Agilent SPS3 Autosampler showed the descending order of Na > Fe > Ca > Si > Mg > Al > K > Mn and Zn > U > V > Ni > Cr > Th > Pb > As > Cu > Sc for major and trace element respectively. The pollution indices and sediment qualities were assessed using the contamination factor (CF), enrichment factor (EF), geo-accumulation index (Igeo), potential ecological risk factor (Er), modified hazard quotient (mHQ), pollution load index (PLI), ecological risk index (RI), single metal toxic risk index (TRIi) and integrated Toxic risk index (TRI) at three stations (stations A, B, and C). Except for As and U, the mean concentrations of the metals were lower than their respective background values. Based on the pollution indices, the studied trace metals were found to have severe EF (>25) with respect to Zn and V, considerable CF (3 ≤ CF ≤ 6) for As, and high CF (> 6) for U. The Igeo values of all the trace metals indicated unpolluted to moderately polluted status (0 ≤ lgeo ≤ 1). The Er ranges (0.05–41.80) indicate low to moderate ecological risk, while mHQ (< 1) values indicate very low severity of contamination. There was no significant risk from the combined metals recovered from the sediment core of the study area to the marine ecosystems according to RI (<150), PLI (< 1), and TRI (< 5) values. The findings from this study will serve as a preliminary baseline chemical composition for rational ecological protection measures off the Nigerian coast.

EVALUATION OF HEAVY METALS CONCENTRATIONS OF Verbascum diversifolium AND Alcea calvertii PLANTS

Depending on atmospheric and industrial pollution, heavy metals can accumulate in the soil and affect the ecosystem. Plants are important biological controllers of environmental pollution. Elemental analysis in plants is among the alternative effective methods used for ecological research. In this study, the usability of plant species such as Verbascum diversifolium and Alcea calvertii, whose heavy metal content was determined, as biomonitors was investigated. The mineral content measurements of the extracts prepared from the leaves and flowers of the examined plant species were made with an Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrophotometer (ICP-OES). Heavy metal (Cd, Pb, Cr, As, Zn, Ni) concentrations in plant extracts were determined. In our study, it was determined that the heavy metal tolerance of these two plant species was high. It is thought that it will be important to determine plant species resistant to heavy metals, to clean nature and to prevent human-induced heavy metal pollution from becoming a major problem for all living things in the future.

Comparison of selected levels of serum elements / minerals in obese dogs

Obesity is the most common metabolic disorder defined as excessive adipose tissue accumulation in the body. Elements and minerals are crucial for biological metabolism. There have been limited studies based on the relationship between elements/minerals and obesity in dogs. The study was aimed to evaluate possible alterations of selected serum elements/minerals -copper (Cu), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), selenium (Se), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), magnesium (Mg), boron (B), cobalt (Co) and aluminum (Al)- in obese dogs. The study groups were categorized as obese group (n:20) and controls (n:10) with different breeds and genders due to body condition scoring system cared under similar conditions fed with dry commercial food once daily. Serum elements/minerals in serum were analyzed by using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrophotometer (ICP-OES). Obese dogs had statistically higher serum Fe levels compared with healthy controls. A positive correlation was found between serum levels of Cr-Ni; Cu-Mg; Cu-Se; Mg-Se; Mg-Ca; Mg-P; B-Co; B-Ca; Ni-Co; Co-Ca and Ca-P in obese dogs. It has been accepted that obesity is a pro-inflammatory process priorly initiating in adipose tissue. Higher serum Fe levels in obese dogs might be related with inflammation during the obesity process. Moreover, the strong correlations among other discussed elements/minerals even with no statistical alterations of serum levels in obese dogs should be elucidated with further studies. Elements and minerals might be evaluated as biomarkers for the determination of effects of obesity in dogs.

Relationships Linking the Element, Bioactive, Hydroxymethylfurfural, Color of Kars Honeys: a Chemometric Approach.

Honey is a natural food substance considered among functional foods due to its positive effect on human health. Quality of honey is significantly influenced by environmental conditions and botanical origin. This study aimed to determine the element content in honey from Kars, Turkey, as well as the bioactive compounds and certain physicochemical and biochemical properties such as hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and color in a chemometric approach. In this study, a total of 41 local honey samples were analyzed. The levels of elements Al, As, B, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Zn, and Pb were determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrophotometer (ICP-OES). The mean concentrations of the elements in the samples were identified as 3.09, 0.64, 59.07, 0.02, 0.14, 0.17, 1.76, 9.32, 0.78, and 0.33µg/g for Al, As, B, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Zn, and Pb, respectively. The mean bioactive compounds of the honey samples were determined as phenolic content (19.74mg GAE/100g), flavonoid content (4.47mg CE/100mg), and DPPH (49.08% inhibition). The HMF levels of all samples conformed to the honey standards of the Codex Alimentarius and Turkish Food Codex. HMF was not negatively correlated with the other color parameters except for the a* (redness or greenness) value. This study showed that clustering analysis (CA) and principal component analysis (PCA) are useful for distinguishing the originality of honey samples by using element content, bioactive properties, HMF, and color and were useful in defining the Kars honey type.

Linking Measure of the Tropical Stingless Bee (Apidae, Meliponini, and Heterotrigona itama) Honey Quality with Hives Distance to the Source of Heavy Metal Pollution in Urban and Industrial Areas in Sabah, Borneo.

Honey is a natural product of bees, and its chemical composition depends on the nectar sources of the surrounding flora as well as environmental factors. However, keeping hives in areas polluted with heavy metals can affect the quality of bee products such as honey. To date, there have been very few studies on the health risks of consuming honey at various locations in the Malaysian state of Sabah, Borneo, in relation to food standards and heavy metal contamination of honey from the stingless bee, Heterotrigona itama in association with pollutant sources. A total of 63 samples of raw and unprocessed honey were collected directly from beekeepers producing honey at five sites in the industrial areas. All selected heavy metals were measured using an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrophotometer (ICP-OES). Overall, the most frequently detected element was Zn (0.090 mg/kg), followed by Pb (0.012 mg/kg), As (0.004 mg/kg), and Cr (0.003 mg/kg), while Cd (0.001 mg/kg) was the lowest element in honey from all areas. With the exception of Cr and Zn, a significant correlation was found between PCA factor score 1 and heavy metal concentration in honey for Pb, Cd, and As, suggesting that the source of pollution for these metal elements was from hives closer to major roads, cities/town, petrochemical hub, and power plants. Although the heavy metal concentrations in the honey samples did not exceed the food standard limits and therefore do not pose a health risk, the observed increase in heavy metal concentrations in honey in industrial areas could pose a potential risk in the future due to the growing interest in rearing of stingless bees for honey production in these areas of Sabah.

Multi-ionic interaction with magnesium doped hydroxyapatite-zeolite nanocomposite porous polyacrylonitrile polymer bead in aqueous solution and spiked groundwater

Removal of multi-ionic contaminants from water resources has been a major challenge faced during the treatment of water for drinking and industrial applications. In the present study, varying composition of magnesium doped hydroxyapatite (Mg-HAp) and zeolite nanocomposite embedded porous polymeric beads were synthesized using solvent displacement method and its sorption efficiency towards multi-ion contaminant (such as Ag, Al, As, Ba, Be, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, Tl, Th, U, V and Zn) was investigated in aqueous solution and spiked groundwater. The prepared beads were characterized using suitable techniques like high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) equation. The surface area and pore radius of the beads varied from 6.996 to 66.469 m2/g and 1.698–3.960 nm respectively according to the composition of the bead. The control bead without nanocomposite showed maximum surface area. Multi-ion adsorptions onto beads were confirmed using an inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrophotometer (ICP-OES) and X-ray photoelectron spectrophotometer (XPS). The sorption efficiency was high at pH 5 owing to its anionic surface charge leading to an increase in affinity towards the cations. For validating field application, selected high performance beads were tested in multi-ion spiked groundwater. The results indicated that the Mg-HAp nanocomposite bead dominate all the other bead compositions with more than 90% removal efficiency for most of the multi-ion contaminants. The feasible adsorption mechanism has been discussed. This adsorption study revealed that the Mg-HAp nanocomposite bead is a promising material that is cost-effective, non-toxic, biodegradable, eco-friendly and highly efficient towards the removal of multi-ionic contaminants from groundwater.

Bio-availability and Bio-accessibility of Lead and Zinc in Contaminated Soil from Cwymystwyth Lead Mine Site

Cwmystwyth Lead Mine was an abundant mine site with pugh’s and kingside water drainages shows contaminated water in the research area with no much scientific evidence to ascertain the level of the pollution. Hence this research was designed to study level of lead and zinc in contaminated soil in which the bio-availability and bio-accessibility were measured. Sixteen (16) soil samples were taken at random using soil auger and a hand trowel. The samples were dried using an oven set at a constant temperature of 400oC for 72 hours. Wire mesh (250 microns) was used to sift the samples. The Unified (BARGE) method was used. The mimics mixtures of saliva, gastric, duodenal, and bile fluids. Three-stage mimic processes were performed, in the mouth, the stomach and intestinal cavities. All mimic digestive fluids were placed in the rotator water bath for 1hr at 37oC. The bioaccessibility of the soil Samples were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrophotometer (ICP-OES) method. The results were obtained using XRF and ICP methods. The percentage concentration of lead in the topsoil was 0.64% and in the bottom soil was 1.47%, with a total mean concentration of 1.06% in combined top and bottom soil. Zinc concentrations in the top and bottom soils were 0.22 and 0.45%, respectively, with a computed total mean of 0.34%. The findings revealed a highly significant difference between lead and zinc in both the top and bottom soil samples (LSD = P0.05). The average concentrations of lead and zinc extracted in both the stomach and intestinal stages were 15.98% and 1.23%, respectively

Vegetables contamination by heavy metals and associated health risk to the population in Koka area of central Ethiopia.

Contaminated soil and vegetables have continued to instigate threat to human health globally and specially in developing countries. This study was aimed to determine concentrations of certain heavy metals in soil and vegetables (cabbage and tomato) from Koka area of central Ethiopia using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrophotometer (ICP-OES). The amounts of As, Pb, Cd, Zn, Cu, Hg and Co detected in soil samples were found to surpass the reference values for agricultural soil. Similarly, the concentrations of As, Pb, Cd, Cr and Hg obtained in both tomato and cabbage samples have exceeded the recommended values with the mean levels generally ranging from 0.93-6.76, 1.80-7.26, 0.33-1.03, 0.86-5.16 and 3.23-4.36 mg/kg dry weight, respectively. The result obtained have signified that leafy vegetable has hoarded heavy metals more than non-leafy vegetable. The total hazard quote for As and Hg from tomato ingestion and for As, Hg and Co from cabbage ingestion were greater than unity, signifying potential health hazard to the public. The health index (HI) owing to tomato and cabbage ingesting were 5.44 and 14.21, respectively, signifying likely adversative health implication to the population from the ingestion of the vegetables. The Total Cancer Risk (TCR) analysis have uncovered the possible cancer hazard persuaded by Cd, Hg, As and Ni from the ingestion of both vegetables. From the outcomes this study, it can be concluded that the soil and vegetables from Koka areas are possibly contaminated with toxic metals and hence demand strict monitoring to safeguard the public around the study area and beyond.

Magnesium-doped green solar cells using natural chromophores

The current study tested the hypothesis of whether specific metal doping may show synergy with plant chromophore-based solar cells using a titanium dioxide (TiO2) electrode. A natural dye-sensitized, magnesium-doped TiO2 solar cell was assembled using the methanol extract from various western African plants including Lawsonia inermis (henna). Mg2+–TiO2 nanoparticles were applied on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) glass to serve as the photoanode of the solar cells with $$I^{ - } /I_{3}^{ - }$$ electrolyte. A surface-modified TiO2 photoanode was prepared through the immersion method using a selective dopant including magnesium and potash. An inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrophotometer (ICP-OES) was utilized to characterize the potash dopant for comparative analysis. Instrumental analysis including ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis), infrared spectroscopy (IR), and gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis were carried out to characterize the natural henna dye extracts. The photovoltaic performance including open-circuit voltage (Voc), short circuit current density (Jsc), current (I), and power output (P) was analyzed quantitatively. ICP-OES analysis demonstrated that potash contains a composite of 26 elemental metals with K and Na accounting for 72.2% (5192.2 mg/kg) and 9.5% (682.6 mg/kg), respectively. GC–MS analysis confirmed the presence of lawsone and tocopherol in henna extracts. Among the tested samples, the Mg-doped TiO2 group generated the highest improvement in Jsc, from 0.66 to 1.28 (mA/cm2), representing a 93% increase. Our experiments demonstrated that the presence of magnesium as a doping agent improves the photogenerated electron transport and the light-harvesting performance of the henna dye to increase the overall efficiency of light-to-electricity conversion of the photovoltaic cells.

Low-temperature synthesis of kerosene- and diesel-range fuels from waste plastics using natural potash catalyst

The current study tested the hypothesis of whether the low-temperature catalytic cracking of waste plastics would generate carbon fules using high-density polyethylene (HDPE) polymer by potash as a novel catalyst for both energy recovery and carbon recycling. We applied a one-stage pyrolysis reactor system with a 75 min reaction time to observe the highest yield at a low temperature range of 70–170 °C. The effects of the potash and zeolite catalysts, temperature, and catalyst–polymer ratio on the pyrolysis liquid yield and hydrocarbon contents were determined. The mineral concentration of potash was analyzed semiquantitatively using an inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrophotometer (ICP-OES) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The ICP-OES demonstrated that nine metals, in the order of K > Na > Fe > Si > Mg > Al > Cu > Ca > Ni, were predominant in the potash. GC–MS analysis of the liquid products showed that major catalytic cracking molecules are C11 to C20 as kerosene- to diesel-range liquid. Potash catalyst produced an average liquid conversion of 34.7% at a catalyst ratio of 30 wt% over a distillate temperature range of 76–140 °C, whereas zeolite generated 19.5% at the same catalyst ratio over 90–120 °C. Although the two catalysts favored mainly olefinic products, a higher potash ratio promoted a smaller carbon products with a purer composition. Our experiments demonstrated that the new natural potash catalyst could convert waste plastics into kerosene to diesel range of valuable and recyclable liquid products as potential renewable fuel sources for carbon recycling.

The Association Between Trace Elements and Osmolality in Plasma and Aqueous Humor Fluid in Diabetic Rabbits.

Trace element metabolism plays an important role in the formation of diabetes and complications of diabetes. Although trace elements changes in lenses in diabetic cataract and glaucoma formation have been investigated, there were few studies evaluating trace elements levels in plasma and aqueous humor fluid in diabetic and non-diabetic conditions. Therefore, we aimed to investigate zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and chromium (Cr) levels in plasma and aqueous humor fluids of rabbits in the diabetic rabbit model. New Zealand male rabbits were divided into two groups as control (n = 8), and diabetes (n = 8) induced by alloxane. At the end of the experimental period, the osmolality in blood, plasma, and aqueous humor fluids from rabbits were measured by osmometer and Zn, Cu, and Cr levels in plasma and aqueous humor fluid were measured by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrophotometer (ICP-OES). The osmolality in blood, plasma, and aqueous humor fluid of the diabetic group was significantly increased compared to the control group (respectively p < 0.01, p < 0.001, p < 0.001). It was analyzed that plasma Zn and Cu levels of diabetic rabbits increased significantly (respectively, p < 0.01; p < 0.001), whereas Cr level significantly decreased according to the control group (p < 0.01). It was observed that Cr and Zn levels in aqueous humor fluid in diabetes group decreased (respectively p < 0.001 and p < 0.01), and a significantly increased in Cu level (p < 0.001) compared to the control group. Related with these changes that may occur in the eye due to the measured parameters, we consider that comparative studies of these types of diabetic animal models would be useful in the evaluation of diabetes and its complications.

The Level of Heavy Metal Contamination in Selected Vegetables and Animal Feed Grasses Grown in Wastewater Irrigated Area, around Asmara, Eritrea

Soils irrigated with wastewater are by and large contaminated with heavy metals, and consumption of vegetables and animal feed grasses grown in contaminated soils have been a major food chain route for human exposure and pose a health hazard. A study was conducted in three sites to assess the accumulation of heavy metals in farms irrigated with wastewater between two and five decades in and around Asmara, Eritrea. The concentrations of metals (Al, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Pb, V, and Zn) in soils and plants (Medicago sativa L., Avena sativa L., Cynodon dactylon L., Corchorus olitorius L., and Cynara scholymus L.) grown in the farms were analyzed using an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrophotometer (ICP-OES). Multivariate analysis, such as principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA), was performed on the distribution of elements in plant species to identify the source of the heavy metals. The level of the metals in the soil samples was in the order of Mo &lt; Cd &lt; Co &lt; Cu &lt; Pb &lt; V &lt; Cr ≈ Zn &lt; Mn &lt; Fe &lt; Al. The order of the metals in the plants of the different sites has been, in general, Cd &lt; Co &lt; V &lt; Cr &lt; Pb &lt; Cu &lt; Zn &lt; Mn &lt; Al &lt; Fe. The study revealed that the soil samples of the studied sites were unsafe for agricultural purposes with respect to Fe, Mn, and Pb except for Pb in the case of the soil sample from the Kushet area. The levels of most of the studied heavy metals in the vegetation samples from all the sites were found within the FAO/WHO permissible limit. Al and Fe exceeded the FAO/WHO permissible limit with the exception of all plant samples from the Kushet area and M. sativa from Paradizo. The concentration of Al was also below the limit in C. dactylon from Adi-Segdo and Paradizo. Of the five vegetation considered in this study, C. olitorius was found to be a good accumulator and C. dactylon, the lowest accumulator of heavy metals. Based on the results of this study, the grass species C. olitorius should be further investigated for its phytoremediation capability of contaminated soils. The results of the multivariate analysis revealed that Fe, V, Al, Cr, Co, and Pb were controlled by mixed (natural and anthropogenic) sources and Zn, Mo, Cu, Mn, and Cd originated from the anthropogenic source. Very limited and inadequate studies were conducted on the accumulation of heavy metals in plants grown in wastewater irrigated farms around Asmara. Therefore, the results of this study are expected to shed light on the understanding of the community and enable the City Council to monitor the environmental quality and take appropriate actions.

Influence of hyperthyroidism on hepatic antioxidants and cytokines Levels: An Experimental Study

Objective: Thyroid diseases greatly affect the liver. Hyperthyroidism can affect the function of the liver. This study aimed to investigate the possible change of antioxidant and pro-inflammatory cytokines levels in liver tissue in hyperthyroid rats.&#x0D; Material and Methods: This study was carried out with 2 experimental groups. Hyperthyroid group was fed with 4 mg/kg L-thyroxine added standard fodder. Control group was fed with standard rat fodder. Liver selenium (Se) levels were measured by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrophotometer (ICP-OES). The antioxidant markers such as Selenoprotein P (SelP), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and the pro-inflammatory cytokines such as Interleukin (IL)-18, and Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) levels were studied in liver tissues by ELISA. All markers levels of liver samples were measured in tissue homogenates.&#x0D; Results: Se, SelP, and GPx levels of the hyperthyroidism group were lower than the control group. (p=0.038, p=0.046, p=0.008 respectively). There was a significant increase in IL-18 and TNF-α levels in hyperthyroidism group when compared to control group (p=0.002, p=0.023 respectively). There was positive correlation between FT3 and FT4, IL-18 and TNF-α (r=0.761, r=0.843, and r=0.826 respectively), but there was negative correlation between FT3 and Se, SelP, and GPx (r=-0.833, r=-0.754, and r=-0.778 respectively).&#x0D; Conclusion: Our findings showed that antioxidant marker levels were decreased, and pro-inflammatory cytokine levels were increased in liver tissues of hyperthyroid rats. These findings suggest that impaired antioxidant and pro-inflammatory status may play a role in liver pathogenesis due to hyperthyroidism.

Levels of heavy metals in soil and vegetables and associated health risks in Mojo area, Ethiopia.

Health implications to the population due to the consumption of contaminated vegetables has been a great concern all over the world. In this study, the levels of heavy metals (Cr, Cd, Zn, Fe, Pb, As, Mn, Cu, Hg, Ni and Co) in soil and commonly consumed vegetables from Mojo area in central Ethiopia have been determined using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrophotometer (ICP-OES) and possible health risks due to the consumptions of the vegetables have also been estimated. The levels of As, Pb, Cd, Zn, Cu, Hg and Co were exceeded the reference level in agricultural soil. Likewise, As, Pb, Cd, Cr and Hg levels exceeded the recommended values in vegetable samples with concentrations ranging from 1.93-5.73, 3.63-7.56, 0.56-1.56, 1.49-4.63 and 3.43-4.23 mg/kg, respectively. It was observed that leafy vegetable (cabbage) has accumulated heavy metals to greater extent compared with tomato. The estimated daily intake (EDI) of toxic metals due to the consumption of the vegetables were below the maximum tolerable daily intake (MTDI). However, the total health quotient (THQ), calculated based on EDI of the heavy metals were found > 1 for As and Hg due to tomato consumption and for As, Hg and Co due to cabbage consumption, suggesting significant health risk. The health index (HI) due to the intake of toxic metals from the consumption of both vegetables were much > 1, with HI values of 7.205 and 15.078 due to tomato and cabbage consumption, respectively. This clearly suggests the possible adverse health effect to adult population from the consumption of tomato and cabbage from the study area. The total cancer risk (TCR) analysis have also revealed the potential adverse cancer risk induced by As, Cd, Hg, and Ni from the consumption of both tomato and cabbage as their TCR values were above the threshold level. Based on the results of this study, there would be a significant health risk (both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic) to the consumer associated with the consumption of cabbage and tomato being cultivated in Mojo area. Consequently, we recommend a strict regulatory control on the safety of vegetables originated from the study area.

Levels of Chromium, Copper, Iron, Magnesium, Manganese, Selenium, Zinc, Cadmium, Lead and Aluminium of honey varieties produced in Turkey

Abstract Honey is a natural animal product. The elemental composition of honey varies greatly depending on the source of nectar, honeydew, pollen and environmental conditions. The aim of the present study was to determine the levels of chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) and aluminium (Al) in a total of 65 honey samples procured from different regions of Turkey. Element levels were measured by using an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrophotometer (ICP-OES). Minimum and maximum levels of the elements, indicated as µg/g wet weight were as follows: Cr: 0.126-7.964, Cu: 0.223-198.361, Fe: 3.506-1278.778, Mg: 5.830-309.783, Mn: 0.096-29.496, Se: 0.418-19.879, Zn: 1.734-245.205, Cd: 0.000-0.297, Pb: 0.000-3.035, Al: 0.775-155.585.

Dietary intake of heavy metals (Cd, Hg, Pb) through consumption of fish and fishery products in Cairo and Giza Cites

Forty eight samples of fish (fresh and frozen), and fish products (Salted and smoked fish) 14 each, were collected from seven regions in Cairo and Giza governments. Samples were directly transferred to the lab and stored at refrigeration temperature till examination. Cadmium, Lead and Mercury residues in fish and fishery product were determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrophotometer (ICP-OES). The estimated daily intakes (EDI) for Cd, Pb and Hg were calculated by multiplying the metal concentration (mean value) of the determined fish samples by the weight of fish consumed per capita in Egypt. Significantly higher Cd concentration in salted sardine (0.37±.297mg/kg) than all other examined samples is recorded. Moreover, the lowest concentration is noticed in basa fillets (0.012±.011 mg/kg). In general, the result revealed that lead contributed the lowest dietary intake (12.85%) followed by mercury (73.97%) while cadmium contributed the highest (142.97%) dietary intake from fish and fishery products. The estimated values of all metals in examined samples in this study were below the established values; except for Cd in samples exceed the permissible limit. Therefore, Cd may constitute health hazard and health problems for consumers.

Heavy metal residues (Cadmium, Lead and Mercury) in fish and fishery products

Fish is a healthy and high nutritive food. Residues of Cd, Hg, Pb in fish and fishery products can constitute a significant hazard that can’t be removed once it’s formed, in addition to their cumulative effect. Therefor the present study aims to evaluate level of heavy metal residues (Cd, Hg, Pb) in fish and fishery product. Eighty four samples from fresh cat fish (Clariaz gariepines), frozen basa (Pangasius species), Fiesekh, muloha, salted sardine and smoked herring were purchased from different markets in Cairo and Giza governorates and examined for heavy metal residues (Cd, Hg, Pb) by using Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrophotometer (ICP-OES). The obtained results revealed that all fresh and frozen fish samples contain heavy metal residues within permissible limit of EOS (2010), FAO/WHO 2018 and (EC) No 1881/2006 (2012), while salted sardine showed high level residue for Cd (72%) that exceed the permissible limit for Cadmium(Cd) followed by muloha (36%). The lowest cadmium residue was found in smoked herring and Fiesekh with percentage of 8%. The highest level of Pb residue was detected in Fiesekh and muloha with percentage of 15% followed by smoked herring that exceed the permissible limit stated by EOS (2010), FAO/WHO 2018 and (EC) No 1881/2006 (2012).all examined samples of fish and fishery products showed Mercury (Hg) residues lower than permissible limit stated by EOS (2010), FAO/WHO 2018 and (EC) No 1881/2006 (2012) (0.5mg/kg). Consumption of salted fish with Low heavy metals residues may constitute health hazard to human.

One-Pot Catalytic Conversion of Cellobiose to Sorbitol over Nickel Phosphides Supported on MCM-41 and Al-MCM-41

MCM-41- and Al-MCM-41-supported nickel phosphide nanomaterials were synthesized at two different initial molar ratios of Ni/P: 10:2 and 10:3 and were tested as heterogeneous catalysts for the one-pot conversion of cellobiose to sorbitol. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), N2 adsorption-desorption, scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), 27Al-magnetic angle spinning-nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer (27Al MAS-NMR), temperature programmed desorption of ammonia (NH3-TPD), temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrophotometer (ICP-OES). The characterization indicated that nickel phosphide nanoparticles were successfully incorporated into both supports without destroying their hexagonal framework structures, that the catalysts contained some or all of the following Ni-containing phases: Ni0, Ni3P, and Ni12P5, and that the types and relative amounts of Ni-containing phases present in each catalyst were largely determined by the initial molar ratio of Ni/P as well as the type of support used. For cellobiose conversion at 150 °C for 3 h under 4 MPa of H2, all catalysts showed similarly high conversion of cellobiose (89.5–95.0%). Nevertheless, sorbitol yield was highly correlated to the relative amount of phases with higher content of phosphorus present in the catalysts, giving the following order of catalytic performance of the Ni-containing phases: Ni12P5 &gt; Ni3P &gt; Ni. Increasing the reaction temperature from 150 °C to 180 °C also led to an improvement in sorbitol yield (from 43.5% to 87.8%).
