Beyond binary: an integrated approach to assessing BOSIET competencies

ABSTRACT In the ever-evolving realm of offshore safety, the Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (BOSIET) program holds paramount importance in ensuring the proficiency of personnel in the challenging offshore setting. Traditionally, BOSIET assessments have utilised a binary evaluation, categorising individuals as either competent or incompetent. Nonetheless, this binary approach oversimplifies the multifaceted nature of offshore competencies. Our paper advocates for a paradigm shift towards an integrated assessment framework that transcends a simplistic pass/fail dichotomy. Drawing inspiration from diverse industries, our proposed approach encompasses a spectrum of competencies, recognising the varied skills requisite in offshore contexts. By embracing this integrated methodology, the BOSIET assessment endeavours to furnish a more nuanced comprehension of an individual's readiness for offshore duties. In conclusion, embracing this integrated approach ensures that offshore personnel are not solely proficient in technical aspects but also equipped with the diverse skills essential for navigating the intricacies of offshore operations.

Effectiveness of Induction Training on Newly Joined Employee Knowledge and Hospital Performance.

Every organization needs well-trained employees to perform job activities effectively and efficiently. Training and development is a continuous process that helps to develop skills, knowledge, and abilities in its workers, which leads to better performance of employees. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of an induction training program for hospital employees as well as the impact on employee knowledge and performance in the clinical field according quality indicator benchmarks. A sample of individuals (N = 775) who were newly hired, promoted, or re-categorized at our institution in 2021 were included in the program. The effectiveness of the induction training program was assessed with a pre- and post-test and feedback form. Topics covered in the training program will help employees know about the institute and increase knowledge and skills. The average pre-test score was 60%, which increased to 84% after the training (p = 0.0001). There was a significantly positive relationship between the quality indicators and the clinical audit results (p = 0.006). The induction training program effectively improved the employees' knowledge regarding their rights and responsibilities as well as clinical knowledge (i.e., Infection control and prevention, quality, disaster management, biomedical waste management, and facility safety).

Effect of Induction Training Program on Teachers’ Effectiveness at Elementary School Level in Punjab

Induction training is a support process for beginning teachers to teach them basic knowledge, skills, and values related with teaching and make them socialize with their profession. This study was conducted to explore effect of induction training program on Elementary School Educators’ (ESEs) teaching effectiveness. Ex-post facto research design was used for this quantitative study. Population comprised ESEs who received induction training from a public sector training academy at Provincial Headquarter Punjab-Pakistan and sample comprised of 331 ESEs.

Impact of Educational Interventions on the Awareness Regarding Hospital Infection Control Practices Among the Medical Students

Background: More than 1.4 million people all over the world are suffering from infections acquired during hospital stays . Awareness regarding infection prevention and control techniques are important to reduce the burden of such infections, ensuring better quality healthcare. Infection control education is a core component of infection control programs. Objectives: To assess the knowledge and awareness of Medical students in a tertiary care teaching hospital in Central India and to evaluate the impact of educational interventions in eliminating any existing gaps in the same. Methods: This interventional study based on self-administered questionnaires (Google forms) involved fifty medical Students who were administered a pre-structured validated questionnaire as pre-test and post-test before and after an induction training program on infection prevention & control measures. The impact of the educational intervention was evaluated by determining the learning gain. Result: The study reveals a highly significant improvement in knowledge levels after training sessions (p<0.0001). Before training most of the study subjects (68%) showed poor levels of knowledge, 22% exhibited moderate levels while only 10% were found to have good levels of knowledge. After training 36% of trainees showed good levels of knowledge, 40% exhibited moderate levels while only 24% were left with poor knowledge. Conclusion: While evaluating the impact of training in this study, we have found a statistically significant absolute learning gain and a medium level of class average normalized learning gain. These findings prove the effectiveness of such targeted training sessions as an important strategic tool in preventing healthcare-associated infections.

Supporting sessional staff through structured induction: evaluation, reflections and lessons learned

The case study that is the focus of this article is based on a professional development opportunity provided for sessional staff who were recruited to the School of Education at a research-intensive university in the UK. Research literature on sessional staff demonstrates potential pitfalls both in academic management and continuing professional development for this group of staff. Taking a socio-constructive view of teaching and learning, we outline the construction and delivery of an induction training programme for sessional staff recruited to supervise Masters dissertations. The sessions were characterised by active learning, discussion among peers and with staff knowledgeable in the specific areas under discussion. The induction training programme was evaluated by an online survey. Drawing on the survey as well as our own reflections, we found that the induction sessions had enabled sessional staff to become more confident in taking up their roles; that active learning and discussion had been both important and enjoyable; and that knowledgeable staff had contributed to the effectiveness of the teaching and learning which were experienced.

Induction Program of Teacher Training of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the Light of Standards for Elementary Teachers in Pakistan

This study looked at the induction training program introduced by the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the light of National Professional Standards for Elementary Teachers (NPSET) in Pakistan. For this purpose, five necessary standards for teaching were compared with the induction training. A qualitative research design was used, 20 teacher trainees were purposively selected for detailed interview-based on five National professional Standards for Elementary Teachers in Pakistan. The data were analyzed through thematic analysis technique, the interviews were transcribed, categorize, and then thermalized. From data analysis it was found that the induction program was not based on national professional standards as the focus of induction was not on the professional development of teachers rather its focus was on content teaching. It was recommended that induction should bring some changes within its practice as this program needs to focus more on professionalism rather than content teaching and hence must focus on professionalism rather than content teaching.

Rapid transformation of the medical on-call rotas to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic: a case study

At Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals Trust, an emergency rota was put into place in anticipation of the COVID-19 pandemic. Key changes included re-deploying non-general medical (GIM) consultants on to the GIM on-call rota and re-deploying junior doctors on to medical rotas, and introducing a COVID-19 induction training programme to support these redeployments. Results from a survey showed 100% of consultants felt the rotas were resilient, with 96% of consultants stating they felt the rotas were well-staffed and 77% stating that they observed no drop in quality of care. Here we outline how these changes were made and present quantitative and qualitative feedback, with the aim of informing other trusts carrying out similar urgent reconfigurations in the future, or seeking to apply the lessons learnt to their non-emergency rotas.

Investigating Induction Trainings Program under the Provincial Institute of Teacher Education KP-ESED in relation to Professional development of newly appointed teachers

The study aims to investigate Induction training under the umbrella of PITE and its relationship to the professional development of newly appointed teachers. Main objectives of this paper were to ascertain the induction program of PITE and identify correlation of induction training programs with teachers’ professional development. The population was 14856 trainee teachers. The sample was selected through simple random and convenient sampling techniques [n-594+14]. The mixed-method methodology was adopted to gather data from the unit of analysis through questionnaire and interviews. Descriptive and inferential statistics were employed for quantitative data and thematic analysis for qualitative data. Large correlation was noted with r-value (.621) showing significance of induction training program with professional development of newly appointed teachers at primary and secondary levels. It is suggested that PITE and RITEs may be involved in providing training occasions for the skilled improvement of newly hired teachers for the achievement of organizational goals.

An Exploration of Framework of Induction Training Program of Elementary School Educators in Punjab

Induction training programs are organized to make teachers familiar with their profession so that they can perform their duties effectively. This study was an exploration of framework of induction training program (ITP) for elementary school educators in Punjab. This qualitative inquiry was based on opinion of all induction training experts and documents related with teachers’ training. The purposively selected sample for this study was five experts of induction training program and documents related with induction training of teachers. Interviews of induction training experts were conducted. Thematic analysis of interviews and documents related with induction training of teachers was conducted. Different themes and coding categories were identified to execute the analysis of responses of induction training experts and documents of induction training. It was concluded from the results that there were five phases of framework of induction training program. First phase was training needs assessment (TNA), second was methodologies, third was training areas, fourth was rationale and fifth was evaluation. There is need to conduct researches on exploration of framework of induction training programs. This will enable different countries to compare their frameworks and enable their teachers to become more effective in accordance with international standards.

Nursing induction training programme upon knowledge on selected nursing interventions among newly joined nurses

Newly joined nurses have a positive attitude to the challenges of being a new nurse. The initial period as a nurse was tough and it requires quite a lot of time to adapt to the new clinical setting. Induction training programme is specifically developed to welcome nurses commencing initial employment or to new nursing roles. A pre experimental study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of the Nursing Induction training program upon selected nursing interventions among newly joined nurses at selected hospitals, Chennai. Fifty two newly joined nurses were selected using purposive sampling technique. Data was collected using demographic variable proforma and structured know ledge questionnaire on selected nursing interventions through self administration method. Rating scale was used to assess the level of satisfaction of nurses regarding nursing induction-training programme. Nursing induction-training program (Hospital Orientation Program for new Entries-HOPE) was conducted for 30 days. Results revealed that the obtained post test mean value (57.1/70) was higher than the pre test mean value (28.5/70) which was significant (p<0.001). Hence, the induction-training program for nurses was effective in improving their knowledge on selected nursing interventions.

A cross-sectional study to assess the awareness and practices related to adult immunization among nursing students in a metropolitan city.

INTRODUCTION:Immunization against vaccine-preventable diseases in adults is the need of the hour. The student nurses by virtue of training are the frontline health workers dealing with patient care. They are exposed to maximum risk of contracting the diseases. Vaccine awareness is not a part of their induction training program. It is necessary to plan preventive measure related to vaccination in their interest.AIM:This study aims to assess awareness and practices of nursing students related to adult immunization.MATERIALS AND METHODS:It is a cross-sectional study, conducted on nursing students of School of Nursing in Mumbai, over a period of 4 months. Universal sampling technique was used. Sample size was 271. A semi-structured interview schedule was used for data collection. Data were analyzed in Microsoft Excel.RESULTS:The awareness about the vaccines was as follows: hepatitis B (98.1%), hepatitis A (72.3%), rabies (90.4%), H1N1 (74.9%), dT (52%), meningococcal (33.6%), human papillomavirus (49.8%), vaccines during pregnancy (88.2%), varicella (76.4%), typhoid (54.6%), cholera (52.8%), rubella (79.7%), travel vaccines (63.5%), Japanese encephalitis (69%), haemophilus influenzae b (40.9%), and pneumococcal (43.5%). About 87.8% of students have received TT at 10 years of age and 83% have received TT at 16 years of age. Hepatitis B vaccine was taken by 64.5%, out of which only 35% students received complete three doses. Majority of them could not answer the correct doses, availability, and cost of these vaccines.CONCLUSIONS:The awareness and practices about adult immunization are found to be inadequate. Nurses should be appraised about theory and practical aspect of immunization as an immediate solution. Furthermore, considering the importance of this topic, the induction training program of nursing students should include awareness on adult immunization and emphasize their own vaccination. The annual health checkup of students should ensure the compliance of vaccines such as hepatitis B.

Study of a structured action pathway and persistent monitoring tool among nurses to achieve cent percent management of hypoglycaemia in in-patients: A measure of quality of healthcare

BackgroundReporting and management of hypoglycaemia is a reflection of quality of healthcare delivery. The study evaluates success of a structured plan implemented in a tertiary care hospital in terms of an evidence-based hypoglycaemia management protocol, training and awareness among all nurses in the organisation to achieve 100% reporting of hypoglycaemia. MethodsA prospective study was conducted over a 3-year period. An in-house hypoglycaemia management protocol was designed, included in the induction training programme of nurses and implemented in wards under the guidance of master trainers. Each episode of hypoglycaemia was reported, managed and logged into centralised database, Quality Flash Matrix (QF). The QF was analysed at end of each 24h cycle to carry out a root cause analyses and appropriate correction in training modules. Data were extracted from hospital records, patient case records and QF in terms of total number of cases receiving insulin and total number of episodes of hypoglycaemia documented and reported. ResultsIncidence of hypoglycaemia recorded was 6.4, 5.3 and 4.7 per 1000 patient hours for the years 2011, 2012 and 2013, respectively. The percentage of episodes of hypoglycaemia reported improved from 78% (1st quarter 2011) to 100% (4th quarter 2012). Root cause analysis showed change in diet of patient with no corresponding change in insulin and vice versa being the commonest cause for hypoglycaemia consistent over the study period. ConclusionConstant structured training of nurses, constant surveillance and appropriate feedback analysis result in decreased incidence of hypoglycaemia and increased reporting of episodes of hypoglycaemia.

'From scared to prepared': targeted structured induction training during the transition from medical school to foundation doctor.

The risks to patients at August handover time are well known, yet there is no national consensus on the best way to deliver induction programmes for Foundation Year One (F1). The aim of this study was to design, deliver and assess a targeted structured induction programme for new F1 doctors. The induction training programme was designed using educational models of topic analysis informed by results of a survey of F1s and medical students, and the F1 curriculum. Data regarding serious untoward incidents and self-reported preparedness were collected between 2008 and 2010, and rates were compared between those receiving optional (2008) and compulsory (2009 and 2010) training. By delivering targeted education and spending time with the outgoing F1 doctors, 97 % of our new doctors felt adequately prepared for practice. The incidence of self-reported mistakes made by F1s in the first 4 months of their practice fell by 45 % and serious untoward incidents also decreased. Targeted structured induction training addresses final-year medical students’ concerns about their preparedness for practice as junior doctors, and improves patient safety. This study supports the General Medical Council recommendation that targeted structured induction training should be mandatory for all new doctors.

Evaluating an induction training program for Greek teachers using an adjusted level model approach

This study is about the evaluation of an induction training program for Greek teachers. The program was evaluated by adopting an adjusted level model approach. Qualitative and quantitative data collection procedures were applied in order to assess the value of the training. The induction training was provided to Greek teachers who are appointed as permanent public employees at the beginning of each academic year. The results were encouraging for the applicability of the level model based evaluation in educational settings. The sequential hierarchy of the model was also tested and supported for the levels that were assessed quantitatively. Further evidence is needed in order to support the integration of methods and the sequential order of the level model approach.

A Study on Efficacy of Induction Training Programme in Indian Railways Using Factor Analysis

The induction training is very vital for all the new recruits. It helps to reduce the time and cost for the employees to adhere to the organization and facilitate the new employees to perform effectively. It helps the employees to feel with greater morale and they create oneness and cohesiveness among the members of the organization. Evaluation of the mandatory construction induction training program in Western Australia: Unanticipated consequences

Since January 1, 2007, Government legislation in Western Australia required all workers in construction to complete mandatory safety awareness training before they began work on site. During the implementation of this new legislation there was considerable resistance from the construction sector due to the mandatory nature of the training. The construction industry viewed this as an unnecessary impost as they considered that there was already sufficient safety training delivered through individual company and site inductions. In 2010, we evaluated the new Construction Induction Training (CIT) in the commercial construction sector in Western Australia to find that since 2007 there has been an unanticipated change in support for the mandatory training. The 2010 study shows a shift in the values of the safety culture for the commercial sector of the construction industry. In 2010, the industry not only supports the mandatory CIT, but is very vocal in its request to re-institute the refresher courses that were withdrawn in 2009. Indeed, 79% of respondents claimed there were measurable benefits to their business having their employees complete the CIT, while 96% claimed the CIT assisted in reducing accidents/incidents on their worksites. This 2010 study indicates that in this case, mandatory training has had a positive effect on safety culture change and gradually reduced work-related injury in the industry since 2007 to the present. The paper uses data from two studies conducted in 2006 and 2010 to highlight the unanticipated change in perception of the value of mandatory safety training in the WA construction industry to one which is positive and supportive.
