Concerns were raised by a third party about inconsistencies in the data of this article and the authors were asked to provide an explanation. The authors responded to the journal's inquiry and provided original data. Following the authors' response, an independent review of the available data concluded that the BMI and gestational age data showed compelling evidence of repetition and that multiple results could not be reproduced. The journal has determined that this evidence fundamentally compromises the conclusions of the article. As such, the journal is issuing this retraction. The authors disagree with this retraction.

Comparison of effectiveness of Foley catheter versus vaginal misoprostol for cervical ripening in induction of labour in Gedeo zone public hospitals, Ethiopia, 2022. Quasi-experimental design

BackgroundThis study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of two methods commonly used to induce labor in women with an unfavorable cervix, which is Misoprostol and trans-cervical Foley catheterization. MethodA total of 120 pregnant women who met the inclusion criteria and were scheduled for induction were recruited for this study. Group 1 comprised 60 women who received the Foley catheter, and Group 2 comprised 60 women who received Misoprostol. The data analysis was done using SPSS version 25, and the student’s independent t-test and chi-square analysis were used to compare the means and proportions of continuous and categorical variables, respectively. The level of statistical significance was set at P < 0.05. ResultsThe results showed that 41 (68.3 %) participants in the Foley catheter group and 49 (81.7 %) participants in the Misoprostol group had a favorable cervix within 24 h. The mean time interval from the start of ripening to a favorable cervix was shorter in the Misoprostol group (10.27 + 2.506) than in the Foley catheter group (11.78 + 2.151). The successful outcome of the induction was 33 (80.5 %) in the Foley catheter group and 35 (71.4 %) in the Misoprostol group.Conclusion and recommendation: misoprostol was a more effective method of cervical ripening than the Foley catheter, resulting in a higher rate of favorable cervix in a shorter time frame. Further research is recommended with different study designs and larger sample sizes.

Efficacy of 24-epibrassinolide-chitosan composite coating on the quality of 'Williams' bananas during ripening.

Banana fruit undergo rapid metabolic changes following ripening induction, which results in excessive softening, chlorophyll degradation, browning, and senescence during postharvest life. As part of a continuous effort to extend fruit shelf life and maintain the best possible quality, this study examined the effect of 24-epibrassinolide (EBR) and chitosan (CT) composite coating on 'Williams' bananas ripening at ambient conditions. Fruit were soaked in 20 μM EBR, 10g L^-1 CT (w/v), and 20 μM EBR + 10g L^-1 CT solutions for 15 min and kept at 23 ± 1C° and 85%-90% (RH) for 9 days. The combined treatment (20 μM EBR + 10g L^-1 CT) clearly delayed fruit ripening, showed lower peel yellowing, weight loss, total soluble solids, and higher firmness, titratable acidity, membrane stability index, and ascorbic acid content compared to the untreated control. After the treatment, the fruit also presented higher radical scavenging capacity, total phenol, and flavonoid contents. The activities of polyphenoloxidase and hydrolytic enzymes were lower, and those of peroxidase were higher in both the peel and pulp of all the treated fruit than in the control. The combined treatment (20 μM EBR + 10g L^-1 CT) is suggested as an effective composite edible coat to retain quality of 'Williams' bananas during ripening. This article is protected by copyright. Intracervical double-balloon catheter versus dinoprostone for cervical ripening in labor induction in pregnancies withahigh risk of uterine hyperstimulation.

There are numerous methods for cervical ripening although not all of them are indicated in women presenting a higher risk of uterine hyperstimulation. To compare the efficacy and security of the two methods for cervical ripening in the induction of labor in these pregnancies. Retrospective analysis of two cohorts consisting of pregnant women who gave birth from 2016 to 2019 (112 inductions with dinoprostone and 112 with intracervical double- balloon). There are statistically significant differences in favor of dinoprostone in deliveries that occurred before 12h since the start of the induction (28.6% vs 13.4%, p = 0.005) and a higher rate of cervical ripening (55.4% vs 33.9%; p = 0.001). There were no statistically significant differences in induction time, the percentage of women delivering within 24h or beyond, nor in the type of delivery. Additionally, a decreased need of oxytocin (60.7% vs 42.9%; p = 0.001) and a lower dose when used has been observed in the dinoprostone group. However, Dinoprostone also has a higher rate of minor maternal complications as uterine hyperstimulation (18.8% vs 3.6%; p = 0.001) and altered cardiotocography (26.8% vs 4.5%; p = 0.001). No significant difference has been found between the two groups regarding severe complications. Dinoprostone presents a greater efficacy for cervical ripening and delivery in ≤ 12h, with less need of oxytocin perfusion than inductions using an intracervical double-balloon. There is no significant difference in severe maternal complications between the two groups. In conclusion, Dinoprostone could be an effective and safe option for patients at risk of uterine hyperstimulation.

Effect of Isosorbide Mononitrate and Misoprostol for Cervical Ripening in Induction of Labor

Background: Induction of labor has increased dramatically over the past two decades. Indications for induction of labor are either maternal (preeclampsia, pregnancy-induced hypertension) or fetal (post-term dates, growth retardation, ruptured membranes, diabetes). Objective: The purpose of this study was evaluation of the beneficial effect of isosorbide mononitrate and misoprostol for cervical ripening in induction of labor. Patients and Methods: A randomized clinical trial was carried out on 120 full-term pregnant women who were admitted for induction of labor in Zagazig University Hospitals in the period of July 2017 to March 2018. Patients were divided into two groups: Group A included 60 full term pregnant females who received 25 μg misoprostol (Vagiprost tablet) and placebo tablet in the posterior vaginal fornix. Group B included 60 full-term pregnant females who received vaginal 25 μg misoprostol (Vagiprost tablet) plus 40 mg isosorbide mononitrate (Effox tablet) in the posterior vaginal fornix. Results: There was little difference between the effectiveness of vaginal 25 mg misoprostol vaginal inserts and 40 mg isosorbide mononitrate vaginal inserts in induction of labor. The safety profiles of both drugs were similar, but isosorbide mononitrate administration is considered a low-risk method of labour induction for pregnant women at full term. Conclusions: The combination of misoprostol and isosorbide mononitrate may be more safe and effective for induction of cervical ripening in full-term pregnancy in comparison to misoprostol alone.

To evaluate the efficacy of isosorbide mononitrate (IMN) for stimulating cervical ripening among pregnant women with premature rupture of membranes (PROM) at or post term. A prospective randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled trial at Kasr El-Ainy Hospital, Cairo, Egypt, from October 2018 to May 2019. Pregnant women at or post term with PROM and unfavorable cervix (Bishop score ≤6) were randomly assigned to receive intra-vaginal IMN (n=70) or placebo (n=70) before admission for induction of labor. The main outcome was induction to the delivery interval. Data were compared between groups by t test. The mean±SD duration from the initial dose of IMN/placebo to the beginning of the active phase of labor was significantly shorter in the IMN group than in the control group (9.7±5.6h vs. 12.9±5.3h). The IMN group also had a shorter time interval from induction to delivery (P<0.01). There was no difference in adverse effects between the groups. Intra-vaginal IMN for cervical ripening in the induction of labor among pregnant with PROM at or post term was found to be effective and safe with minimal adverse effects, and good neonatal and maternal outcomes. Early Amniotomy After Cervical Ripening for Induction of Labor: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

Objective Data Timing of artificial rupture of membranes (ie, amniotomy) in induction of labor is controversial, because it has been associated not only with shorter labors, but also with fetal nonreassuring testing, at times necessitating cesarean delivery. The aim of this systematic review and metaanalysis of randomized trials was to evaluate the effectiveness of early amniotomy vs late amniotomy or spontaneous rupture of membranes after cervical ripening. Study The search was conducted with the use of electronic databases from inception of each database through February 2019. Review of articles included the abstracts of all references that were retrieved from the search. Study Appraisal and Synthesis Methods Selection criteria included randomized clinical trials that compared early amniotomy vs control (ie, late amniotomy or spontaneous rupture of membranes) after cervical ripening with either Foley catheter or prostaglandins at any dose. The primary outcome was the incidence of cesarean delivery. The summary measures were reported as summary relative risk with 95% of confidence interval with the use of the random effects model of DerSimonian and Laird. Results Four trials that included 1273 women who underwent cervical ripening with either Foley catheter or prostaglandins and then were assigned randomly to either early amniotomy, late amniotomy, or spontaneous rupture of membranes (control subjects) were included in the review. Women who were assigned randomly to early amniotomy had a similar risk of cesarean delivery (31.1% vs 30.9%; relative risk, 1.05; 95% confidence interval, 0.71–1.56) compared with control subjects and had a shorter interval from induction to delivery of approximately 5 hours (mean difference, –4.95 hours; 95% confidence interval, –8.12 to –1.78). Spontaneous vaginal delivery was also reduced in the early amniotomy group, but only 1 of the included trials reported this outcome (67.5% vs 69.1%; relative risk, 0.78; 95% confidence interval, 0.66–0.93). No between-group differences were reported in the other obstetrics or perinatal outcomes. Conclusion After cervical ripening, routine early amniotomy does not increase the risk of cesarean delivery and reduces the interval from induction to delivery.

An overview of the past, current and future trends for cervical ripening in induction of labour

Key content The advantages and disadvantages of pharmacological methods and mechanical methods (such as the osmotic cervical dilator Dilapan‐S® and Foley catheter) for labour induction are discussed. This article looks at the international and local (UK) experience with use of Dilapan‐S® for cervical ripening. The Cochrane and Royal College of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians (RCOG) statements with regards to use of mechanical dilators are referenced. Learning objectives To know the past, current and future trends in cervical ripening for labour induction. To understand that mechanical methods (e.g. Dilapan‐S® and Foley catheter) offer similar efficacy and better safety compared to PGE2.

A genetic genomics-expression approach reveals components of the molecular mechanisms beyond the cell wall that underlie peach fruit woolliness due to cold storage.

Peach fruits subjected to prolonged cold storage (CS) to delay decay and over-ripening often develop a form of chilling injury (CI) called mealiness/woolliness (WLT), a flesh textural disorder characterized by lack of juiciness. Transcript profiles were analyzed after different lengths of CS and subsequent shelf life ripening (SLR) in pools of fruits from siblings of the Pop-DG population with contrasting sensitivity to develop WLT. This was followed by quantitative PCR on pools and individual lines of the Pop-DG population to validate and extend the microarray results. Relative tolerance to WLT development during SLR was related to the fruit's ability to recover from cold and the reactivation of normal ripening, processes that are probably regulated by transcription factors involved in stress protection, stress recovery and induction of ripening. Furthermore, our results showed that altered ripening in WLT fruits during shelf life is probably due, in part, to cold-induced desynchronization of the ripening program involving ethylene and auxin hormonal regulation of metabolism and cell wall. In addition, we found strong correlation between expression of RNA translation and protein assembly genes and the visual injury symptoms.

Isosorbide Mononitrate and Misoprostol for Cervical Ripening in Induction of Labor

Background: The most favorable method for cervical ripening is not fully agreed upon by practitioners; however, isosorbide mononitrate administration is considered a low-risk method of labor induction for pregnant women at full term. Objective: To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of adding isosorbide mononitrate to misoprostol for cervical ripening in prelabor induction of full term pregnant women in comparison with misoprostol alone. Design: Randomized study. Setting: Ain Shams Maternity teaching hospital. Patients and methods: 120 women were divided randomly into two equal arms of 60 women in each one. Intervention: Patients admitted through the reception room or out patient clinic and they scheduled for induction of labor. Group I were given intravaginal isosorbide mononitrate with misoprostol while group II were given placebo with misoprostol intravaginally.

Polygalacturonase in Tomato Fruits and the Induction of Ripening

Endopolygalacturonase (EC 3.2.1.15) activity, endopolygalacturonase protein detected immunologically and water-soluble uronide were measured in tomato fruit samples (cv. Rutgers) at different stages of ripening. Endopolygalacturonase activity and endopolygalacturonase protein were only detected in samples in which ripening had been initiated for 2 or more days. Enzyme activity and enzyme protein increased during ripening and were highly correlated. A high molecular weight form of the enzyme appeared 2 or 3 days after ripening was initiated. Lower molecular weight forms of endopolygalacturonase appeared later and eventually accounted for most of the enzyme protein. The content of water-soluble uronide did not increase until fruit had been ripening for 4 or more days. It is concluded that endopolygalacturonase is not involved in the initiation of ripening.
