It is pointed out that in a universal confining potential model quark mass differences induce symmetry breaking in baryons. We show why SU 8 ⊗ O 3 symmetry can be a very good symmetry in low-lying baryons and also that high-mass baryon resonances split into quite different types of baryon trajectories. The breaking effects in masses and form factors of octet ( J P = 1 2 + ) and decuplet ( 3 2 + ) baryons are evaluated.
