Volatile Organic Compounds on Rhodes Island, Greece: Implications for Outdoor and Indoor Human Exposure

Volatile organic compounds (VOC) are considered a class of pollutants with a significant presence in indoor and outdoor air and serious health effects. The aim of this study was to measure and evaluate the levels of outdoor and indoor VOCs at selected sites on Rhodes Island, Greece, during the cold and warm periods of 2023. Spatial and seasonal variations were evaluated; moreover, cancer and non-cancer inhalation risks were assessed. For this purpose, simultaneous indoor-outdoor air sampling was carried out on the island of Rhodes. VOCs were determined by Thermal Desorption—Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectroscopy (TD-GC/MS). Fifty-six VOCs with frequencies ≥ 50% were further considered. VOC concentrations (∑56VOCs) at all sites were found to be higher in the warm period. In the warm and cold sampling periods, the highest concentrations were found at the port of Rhodes City, while total VOC concentrations were dominated by alkanes. The Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model was applied to identify the VOC emission sources. Non-cancer and cancer risks for adults were within the safe levels.

Numerical prediction model for long- and short-term concentration of indoor volatile organic compounds from building materials

ABSTRACT Emission models of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from individual indoor building materials have been developed and validated. However, multiple indoor building materials release VOCs simultaneously, and neither single building material nor multiple building material emission models can predict the entire release cycle of VOCs accurately. This study established a long- and short-term numerical prediction model for indoor VOC concentration. The model includes an attenuation coefficient θ. To describe the decay rate of the total VOC content, which is mainly influenced by time, and by designing experiments and testing in environmental warehouses under different seasonal conditions, the value of θ was first obtained. Then, after successfully plotting the emission curve of indoor pollutant concentration over time through numerical solution and using θ, the VOC content was corrected for various seasonal conditions. On the basis of this model, an exposure dose integration algorithm was proposed to evaluate the environmental health risks, as an application of this model. In comparison with previous research results and experimental data, this model has better predictive performance.

Gas6-Axl signal promotes indoor VOCs exposure-induced pulmonary fibrosis via pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells–fibroblasts cross-talk

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as environmental pollutants were associated with respiratory diseases. Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) was characterized by an increase of extracellular matrix, leading to deterioration of lung function. The adverse effects on lung and the potential mechanism underlying VOCs induced PF had not been elucidated clearly. In this study, the indoor VOCs exposure mouse model along with an ex vivo biosensor assay was established. Based on scRNA-seq analysis, the adverse effects on lung and potential molecular mechanism were studied. Herein, the results showed that VOCs exposure from indoor decoration contributed to decreased lung function and facilitated pulmonary fibrosis in mice. Then, the whole lung cell atlas after VOCs exposure and the heterogeneity of fibroblasts were revealed. We explored the molecular interactions among various pulmonary cells, suggesting that endothelial cells contributed to fibroblasts activation in response to VOCs exposure. Mechanistically, pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (MPVECs) secreted Gas6 after VOCs-induced PANoptosis phenotype, bound to the Axl in fibroblasts, and then activated fibroblasts. Moreover, Atf3 as the key gene negatively regulated PANoptosis phenotype to ameliorate fibrosis induced by VOCs exposure. These novel findings provided a new perspective about MPVECs could serve as the initiating factor of PF induced by VOCs exposure.

Three-dimensional Ni foam supported Pt/NiFe LDH catalyst with enhanced oxygen activation for room-temperature formaldehyde oxidation

Room-temperature catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde (HCHO) has been extensively investigated due to its high efficiency, convenience, and environmental friendliness. Herein, nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) nanosheets were synthesized in-situ on a nickel foil (NF) using a facile one-step hydrothermal method, followed by the deposition of ultra-low content (0.069 wt%) of Pt nanoparticles through NaBH4 reduction. The resulting three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical Pt/NiFe-NF catalyst exhibited exceptional activity for the complete decomposition of formaldehyde to carbon dioxide (CO2) at room temperature (∼95 % conversion within 1 h), as well as remarkable cycling stability. The 3D porous structure of Pt/NiFe-NF provides fast transport channels for the diffusion of gas molecules, making the active catalyst surfaces more accessible. Moreover, abundant hydroxyl groups in NiFe LDH serve as adsorption centers for HCHO molecules to form dioxymethylene (DOM) and formate intermediates. Furthermore, electronic interactions between NiFe LDH and Pt enhance the adsorption and activation of O2 on Pt surfaces, leading to the complete decomposition of intermediates into non-toxic products. This work presents new insights into the design and preparation of Pt-based 3D hierarchical catalysts with surface-rich hydroxyl groups for the efficient removal of indoor HCHO.

Effects of 222 nm Germicidal Ultraviolet Light on Aerosol and VOC Formation from Limonene.

Since the 1930s, germicidal ultraviolet (GUV) irradiation has been used indoors to prevent the transmission of airborne diseases, such as tuberculosis and measles. Recently, it has received renewed attention due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While GUV radiation has been shown to be effective in inactivating airborne bacteria and viruses, few studies on the impact of GUV on indoor air quality have been published. In this work, we evaluate the effects of GUV222 (GUV at 222 nm) on the chemistry of a common indoor volatile organic compound (VOC), limonene. We found that the production of O3 by the GUV222 lamps caused the formation of particulate matter (PM) and oxygenated volatile organic compounds (VOCs). We also found that the chemistry proceeds through the ozonolysis of limonene as well as the reaction with secondary OH, and that the presence of GUV light led to observable but small perturbations to this chemistry. Understanding the effects of GUV222 on indoor air quality is important in evaluating the safety of these devices.

Nanomaterial SnS2-Based Sensor for VOC Gas Detection at Room Temperature

Real-time indoor hazardous gases monitoring has gained interest in ensuring human health. An effort to design gas sensing devices, which are compact in size, flexible, and low power consumption, providing high-performance sensing plays a crucial role in precise sensing of the indoor environment. Here, we have fabricated 2D SnS2 flakes for gas sensor. The 2D ultra-thin SnS2, including a few layers, shows fascinating sensing toward Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) under room temperature with high response and fast reaction speed. The short-term stability versus time of the SnS2 sensor is investigated. Due to the great adsorption of gaseous molecules, the SnS2-gas sensor operates at room temperature without external heating sources. The Schottky junction-based sensor is one of the key factors contributing to the higher performance of the sensor. Furthermore, its VOC-sensing mechanism is explained obviously through the energy band diagram. The SnS2-layer is considered a promising candidate in indoor VOCs monitoring and respiratory biomarker analysis in the future.

Boosting Photothermocatalytic Oxidation of Toluene Over Pt/N-TiO2: The Gear Effect of Light and Heat.

Photothermal catalysis is extremely promising for the removal of various indoor pollutants owing to its photothermal synergistic effect, while the low light utilization efficiency and unclear catalytic synergistic mechanism hinder its practical applications. Here, nitrogen atoms are introduced, and Pt nanoparticles are loaded on TiO2 to construct Pt/N-TiO2-H2, which exhibits 3.5-fold higher toluene conversion rate than the pure TiO2. Compared to both photocatalytic and thermocatalytic processes, Pt/N-TiO2-H2 exhibited remarkable performance and stability in the photothermocatalytic oxidation of toluene, achieving 98.4% conversion and 98.3% CO2 yield under a light intensity of 260 mW cm-2. Furthermore, Pt/N-TiO2-H2 demonstrated potential practical applicability in the photothermocatalytic elimination of various indoor volatile organic compounds. The synergistic effect occurs as thermocatalysis accelerates the accumulation of carboxylate species and the degradation of aldehyde species, while photocatalysis promotes the generation of aldehyde species and the consumption of carboxylate species. This ultimately enhances the photothermocatalytic process. The photothermal synergistic effect involves the specific conversion of intermediates through the interplay of light and heat, providing novel insights for the design of photothermocatalytic materials and the understanding of photothermal mechanisms.

La-Doped Sm2Zr2O7/PU-Coated Leather Composites with Enhanced Mechanical Properties and Highly Efficient Photocatalytic Performance.

Flexible La-doped Sm2Zr2O7/polyurethane (PU) coated leather composites were synthesized using a one-step hydrothermal method, with highly efficient photocatalytic degradation properties by coating the La-doped Sm2Zr2O7/PU emulsion onto the leather and drying it. The phase composition and optical properties of the as-prepared photocatalytic material were systematically characterized. The result revealed that La was doped in Sm2Zr2O7 successfully, and the prepared samples still possessed pyrochlore structure. The absorption edge of the prepared samples exhibited a red-shift with the increase in La doping, indicating that La doping could broaden the absorbance range of the La-doped Sm2Zr2O7 materials. The catalytic performance of La-doped Sm2Zr2O7/PU composite emulsion coating on the photocatalytic performance of leather was studied with Congo red solution as the target pollutant. The results showed that the best photocatalytic property was found in the 5% La-doped Sm2Zr2O7 nanomaterial at a concentration of 3 g/L. The resulting 5% La-doped Sm2Zr2O7 nanomaterial exhibited a high specific surface area of 73.5 m2/g. After 40 min of irradiation by a 450 W xenon lamp, the degradation rate of Congo red reached 93%. Moreover, after surface coating, the La-doped Sm2Zr2O7/PU coated leather composites showed obviously improved mechanical properties, as the tensile strength of La-doped Sm2Zr2O7/PU coated leather composites increased from 6.3 to 8.4 MPa. The as-prepared La-doped Sm2Zr2O7/PU coated leather composites with enhanced mechanical properties and highly efficient photocatalytic performance hold promising applications in the treatment of indoor volatile organic compounds.

Volatile organic compounds and odor emissions from typical building materials and air sample storage time analysis

Building materials are the main sources of indoor volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and odors, which significantly impact indoor air quality and perceived air quality. In this study, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used to measure VOC emissions from 34 building materials, while an untrained panel assessed odor intensity (OI) and acceptability (ACC). The total VOC (TVOC) concentrations ranged from 156.5 to 3572.0 μg/m3, with alkanes identified as the predominant types of VOCs. Formaldehyde and n-hexane were found to be the most abundant compounds. Aldehydes are the dominant odorants, with hexanal being the most prevalent one according to the odor activity value (OAV). OI ranged from 2.35 to 4.69, while ACC ranged from −0.49 to 0.36. Adhesives exhibited both the highest TVOC concentration as well as a strong odor compared to other building materials; furniture boards emitted the lowest TVOC concentrations; wall coverings emitted minimal levels of odors. The effects of storage time on VOC concentrations and odor assessments were analyzed after sample collection for different durations: 6 h, 24 h or 48 h. A storage time period of 24 h was determined to be sufficient for assessing OI and ACC whereas shorter durations may be required when analyzing VOC concentrations or OAV values. The data provided in this study could help regulate VOC and odor emissions from building materials, as well as facilitate developing a model correlating subjective assessment results of OI and ACC with objective measurements of VOC concentrations and OAV.

Study on the effect of humidity on formaldehyde emission parameters of wood-based panels

Wood-based panels are a significant source of indoor volatile organic compounds (VOCs), crucial for managing indoor pollution. The emissions from wood-based panels are influenced by both intrinsic factors, including their composition and manufacturing process, and extrinsic environmental conditions, such as temperature and humidity. In this paper, the emission of formaldehyde in plywood was studied under different temperature conditions (15°C, 23°C, 32°C and 37°C) and different humidity conditions (40%, 60% and 80%) by environmental chamber method. To understand the influence of relative humidity on the key parameters of panels from a mechanism perspective, this paper investigates the influence of relative humidity on the initial emittable concentration of formaldehyde, based on the hydrolysis reaction of urea-formaldehyde resin. Concurrently, the molecular dynamics and porous panels model were amalgamated to assess the influence of relative humidity on both the partition and diffusion coefficient. To simulate the emission process in a real environment, a control equation that allows for variations in both temperature and humidity is needed. This paper employs the method of variable separation to derive a simplified control equation. Subsequently, experimental data was utilized to validate the derived equation’s effectiveness within the practical indoor environmental range.

Impact of Hurricanes, Tropical Storms, and Coastal Extratropical Storms on Indoor Air VOC Concentrations

AbstractUnderstanding vapor intrusion (VI) temporal variability is key for the design of sampling strategies intended to assess reasonable maximum exposure of indoor air concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as well as risk evaluation and mitigation planning. VI temporal variability has previously been shown to be dependent on the complex interactions of multiple independent variables—meteorological, hydrogeological, and human behavioral. Several meteorological variables, including barometric pressure, wind speed, and rainfall, are linked during tropical and extratropical storm events. High‐frequency meteorological and indoor VOC data from a series of seven tropical storms and four extratropical storms were collected at a single industrial building with multiple heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) zones. The storms and sampling zones showed a variety of effects on trichloroethylene (TCE) concentrations in indoor air. In one zone (supply room), increases in TCE concentrations often, but not always, closely coincided with decreasing barometric pressure, sustained wind speeds over 32 km/h (20 mph), and differential pressures indicating subslab to indoor flow. A second zone, in a restroom, did not show a consistent pattern of temporal correlation between meteorological factors and indoor air concentrations. While peak indoor air concentrations may be associated with the passage of cyclonic storms at some sampling locations, this does not appear to be generalizable to all sampling locations. The observed increase in indoor air concentration potentially attributable to these storms is typically less than an order of magnitude and the duration ranges from a day to a week.

Preconcentrating sensor systems toward indoor low-concentration VOC detection by goal-oriented, sequential, inverse design strategy

The techniques capable of accurately and effectively detecting low-concentration volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are promising for environmental contaminant monitoring and non-invasive disease diagnosis. However, low-concentration measurement and selective quantification of multiple components are two major challenges for VOC detection. This work proposes the idea of a sensing system that incorporates preconcentration and multiple sensor arrays to address the two challenges. The design principles and strategies of the sensing system were discussed, as well as the key requirements and challenges of each step of the design process. We further developed a goal-oriented, sequential, inverse design method for an accurate sensing system of indoor VOCs, enabling the realization of high cross-selectivity detection. We also demonstrate the potential and feasibility of the sensing system with a preconcentrator through illustrative examples. The proposed system is expected to be scalable and intermittent, moving it closer to reliable, commercial, and portable near real-time determinations of specific VOC concentrations. It would promote the effectiveness of indoor air quality (IAQ) assessments and interventions.

Performance enhancement analysis of a liquid desiccant dehumidifier with internal cooling for indoor benzene removal

Indoor volatile organic compounds (VOCs) pollution is becoming increasingly serious, posing a huge threat to human health. The removal of VOCs has always been a challenge in air purification processes. In this regard, conventional VOC removal methods are often not ideal. Liquid desiccant (LD) dehumidification is a new removal method proposed recently and becoming increasingly used in many applications. Previous studies dealing with LD mainly focused on adiabatic dehumidifiers, but the results are not very promising. The main reason for this is the significant temperature rise of the LD solution, which seriously affects the mass transfer of the VOC. To enhance mass transfer performance, it is important to suppress temperature rise. In this study, internal cooling (IC) technology is introduced to enhance benzene mass transfer. A mathematical model is established for modeling and assessing the mass transfer process. The benzene transfer characteristics are studied and compared, considering dehumidifiers with and without IC. The effects of the cooling water, air, LD solution, and transfer parameters on the benzene mass transfer performance are evaluated and identified. Additionally, the distribution differences of the key parameters along the dehumidifier are revealed. The results indicated that benzene transfer performance can be significantly enhanced by adopting IC, with a performance improvement of 28.42%. This improvement is attributed to the decrease in the LD solution temperature caused by IC and the corresponding Henry’s constant. The cooling water parameters, airflow rate, LD solution status, and NTUbenzene are the key factors affecting the removal performance. Overall, employing IC can effectively improve the transfer driving force for benzene, resulting in better benzene transfer performance. This study demonstrates the feasibility and promising potential of using IC technology to enhance benzene transfer in LD dehumidifiers.

Indoor cooking and cleaning as a source of outdoor air pollution in urban environments.

Indoor sources of air pollution, such as from cooking and cleaning, play a key role in indoor gas-phase chemistry. The focus of the impact of these activities on air quality tends to be indoors, with less attention given to the impact on air quality outside buildings. This study uses the INdoor CHEmical Model in Python (INCHEM-Py) and the Advanced Dispersion Modelling System (ADMS) to quantify the impact cooking and cleaning have on indoor and outdoor air quality for an idealised street of houses. INCHEM-Py has been developed to determine the concentrations of 106 indoor volatile organic compounds at the point they leave a building (defined as near-field concentrations). For a simulated 140 m long street with 10 equi-distant houses undertaking cooking and cleaning activities, the maximum downwind concentration of acetaldehyde increases from a background value of 0.1 ppb to 0.9 ppb post-cooking, whilst the maximum downwind chloroform concentrations increase from 1.2 to 6.2 ppt after cleaning. Although emissions to outdoors are higher when cooking and cleaning happen indoors, the contribution of these activities to total UK emissions of volatile organic compounds is low (less than 1%), and comprise about a quarter of those emitted from traffic across the UK. It is important to quantify these emissions, particularly as continued vehicle technology improvements lead to lower direct emissions outdoors, making indoor emissions relatively more important. Understanding how indoor pollution can affect outdoor environments, will allow better mitigation measures to be designed in the future that can take into account all sources of pollution that contribute to human exposure.

Predictive modeling for VOC adsorption on TiO2 filters: Implications for enhanced photocatalytic oxidation in indoor air quality management

Adsorption of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) onto the surface of a TiO2 filter is essential for initiating photocatalytic oxidation (PCO). This study investigated the adsorption coefficients (K) of 14 VOCs under different relative humidities (RH) and explored the influence of different air velocities on the adsorption of Methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK). Consequently, a polyparameter linear free energy relationship (pp-LFER) model was established to predict lnK at 35 % RH (lnK35%). Moreover, the study found that lnK has a linear relationship with RH, represented as lnK=αRH+β. The parameters ′α′ and ′β′ can be accurately predicted using the Henry’s Law constant (K°OH) and lnK35%, respectively. By combining the pp-LFER model with regression equations for ′α′ and ′β′, it is possible to predict lnK for VOCs across various RH levels. The study also revealed that the adsorption coefficient of increases with escalating air velocities (0.04 – 0.34 m/s), primarily due to mass transfer. The observed low adsorption performance for aldehydes, commonly seen as by-products in the PCO process, suggests cautious usage of the PCO filtration system in practice before the by-products are eliminated downstream. This study offers valuable insights for the practical application of PCO technologies in the comprehensive removal of indoor VOCs.

Multi-electron collaborative photo-Fenton-like system for indoor air purification: A case study of Cu(II) grafted BaTiO3 with oxygen vacancies

Indoor air purification belongs to one of the most important and traditional applications of photocatalysis, which brings forward an impending need for more efficient photocatalytic systems. Herein, we initiated a multi-electron collaborative photo Fenton-like system for mineralization of indoor volatile organic compounds by jointly modified with oxygen vacancies and Cu(II) clusters on barium titanate. Oxygen vacancies effectively increase the visible light absorption and photoinduced charge separation efficiency. Benefiting from the energy level match with oxygen vacancies and Cu(II) species, the trapped electrons in the oxygen vacancies can effectively migrate towards Cu(II) clusters. More importantly, the Cu species that have received electrons can trigger the multi-electron reduction of oxygen to in-situ form H2O2 through the redox of Cu(II)/Cu(I). In parallel, the reactive •OH radicals can be effectively produced by the photo-like Fenton reaction. Thus, the newly developed barium titanate based photocatalysts exhibit over 38-fold improvement in the removal efficiency of volatile organic compounds (in terms of CO2 evolution rate) by virtue of the strong oxidizing power of holes in the valance band and multi-electron photoFenton-like reaction to generate •OH radicals. Notably, the absorbed H2O molecules play an indispensable role in the formation process of in-situ H2O2. Thus, even under high-humidity condition, our photocatalysts present stable and high photocatalytic activity, which provides great potential for practical applications in indoor air purification.

Jingle bells, what are those smells? Indoor VOC emissions from a live Christmas tree

Every year in the United States conifers are purchased to serve as Christmas trees in homes where they emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to the indoor environment. Although many studies have measured the ecosystem-level emissions of VOCs from conifers outdoors (characterizing monoterpene, isoprene, and aldehyde emissions), little is known about VOC emission rates once a conifer is brought indoors. Using a proton transfer reaction-mass spectrometer we characterized the VOCs emitted from a freshly cut Douglas Fir for 17 days in an environmentally controlled chamber. Ozone injections were also performed to analyze indoor chemistry that may occur. Introduction of the tree into the chamber increased the response of 52 mass spectra signals detected by the PTR-MS by at least 500 counts per second (cps) compared to background levels, with concentrations sharply decreasing after the first two days. Monoterpenes were emitted from the tree at a rate of 12.4 mg h−1 the first day and fell to 1 mg h−1 by day three. Overall, monoterpene emissions from this Douglas fir were initially comparable to other strong indoor monoterpene sources (fragranced products and air fresheners) but decayed quickly and, within days, were smaller than other common indoor sources. Addition of ozone to the chamber resulted in decreased monoterpene concentrations that coincided with modest increases in formaldehyde. Four other emitted VOCs were tentatively identified due to their large increase within the first few hours of the tree placed in the chamber, behavior during ozonation, or pattern of accumulation over time.

Development of a safety analysis method for volatile organic compounds using 2-phenoxyethanol as solvent

Indoor volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are usually sampled using active carbon samplers and subsequently analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to assess the exposure risk to workers. Therefore, selection of a suitable solvent for VOC extraction is crucial. However, reports on the use of 2-phenoxyethanol—known for its low vapor pressure and low toxicity—as a solvent for extracting VOCs from activated carbon are lacking. Here, we show that 2-phenoxyethanol is a suitable alternative solvent with low toxicity and can extract a wide variety of VOCs without overlapping with target VOCs on the gas chromatogram. The recoveries of 2-phenoxyethanol were 57% (styrene) to 83% (methyl n-butyl ketone), which were higher than those of CS2, acetone, and n-hexane at room temperature. The recoveries improved to 67% (styrene) to 102% (isopentyl acetate) under 50 °C. Optimization of the GC conditions showed that a viscosity delay time of 3 s was required to avoid producing bubbles in the injection syringes. We selected DB-HeavyWAX as a column because it could be heated above the boiling point of 2-phenoxyethanol (247 °C), allowing the removal of 2-phenoxyethanol from the column. This study contributes to the development of analysis methods for VOCs under safe operating conditions.

Bifunctional Cu-incorporated carbon nanospheres via in-situ complexation strategy as efficient toluene adsorbents and antibacterial agents

Carbon adsorbents have been widely used to remove indoor volatile organic compounds (VOCs), however, the proliferation of bacteria on the carbon adsorbents may deteriorate the indoor air quality and thus pose a serious threat to human health. Herein, we report the synthesis of antibacterial porous carbon spheres (carbonized aminophenol-formaldehyde resin, CAF) with well-dispersed Cu species via an in situ incorporation of Cu2+ during the polymerization of 3-aminophenol-formaldehyde resin followed by a thermal carbonization and reduction process. Compared with CAF, the Cu/CAF-x nanocomposites with Cu loading show a much higher specific surface area (>700 m2 g−1vs. 569 m2 g−1 for CAF). In addition, the pore size of Cu/CAF-x is ranging from 0.7 to 1.68 nm, which is exactly conducive to adsorb the toluene molecules. As a result, the toluene adsorption capacity is improved from 123.50 mg g−1 for CAF to >170 mg g−1 for Cu/CAF-x. More importantly, such adsorbents possess excellent antibacterial performance, the Cu/CAF-10 (10 wt% of Cu loading) with a concentration of 50 μg mL−1 can completely kill the E. coli within 30 min. Our work paves the way to the development of bifunctional adsorbents with both efficient VOCs adsorption and excellent antibacterial performance.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in residential indoor air during interior finish period: Sources, variations, and health risks

Building and furniture materials are significant sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and determine their long-time indoor levels. However, the variations of indoor VOCs and associated health risks of interior finishers during the construction stages are poorly understood. In this study, VOCs in the indoor microenvironments were measured at different interior finishing stages at two renovated residences using thermal desorption and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The mean concentrations of the Σ15 VOCs were 118.2 μg/m3 in Home A and 232.5 μg/m3 in Home B. The simultaneous outdoor levels were approximately three times lower than indoors. The VOC concentrations were obviously lower than previous measurements in newly renovated residences, reflecting reduced use of these VOCs in interior materials. Temporal variations in the VOC concentrations during the interior finish period were compound- or room-dependent at each residence The remarkable rise in the VOC concentrations was largely affected by furniture installation at both residences. The non-cancer risks of VOC exposure were lower for both interior finishers and occupants. However, the cumulative cancer risks for interior finishers (1.2 × 10−4) exceed the acceptable threshold limit. The occupational exposure at the wall painting stage was the highest, and formaldehyde is the most significant contributor to both cancer and noncancer risks. This study also highlights the importance of detecting novel VOCs that may be present in interior finish materials as indicated by the TVOC measurements.
