Valid and reliable instrument for measuring Indonesian students’ reading literacy

The study aims to verify the validity and reliability of a set of tests for measuring Indonesian students’ reading literacy achievement that has been developed by the Center for Language Strategy and Diplomacy Development as well as the Educational Assessment Center, two institutions under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia. The construct validity of the test was verified using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and the reliability was estimated using the composite reliability (CR) formula. The data used were responses from a sample of 6,539 students from 294 high schools in 34 provinces in Indonesia. The sample was established using a multistage sampling technique from the study population of 15-year-old students in Indonesia. The results indicated that the construct validity of the test was verified and the reliability coefficient was 0.805, which was defined good. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the set of tests is appropriate to be used to measure Indonesian students’ reading literacy achievement. In other words, using the set of tests will establish measurement that can reflect the reading literacy achievement of Indonesian students.

Development of teaching materials with agricultural insight to introduce of agriculture in primary school students

Agriculture is one of the supports for national food needs, so it must continue to be preserved. Unfortunately, nowadays, the sustainability of agriculture is increasingly worrying. Many young people are no longer interested in becoming farmers or working in the agricultural sector. A solution like this must be immediately sought so that regeneration is maintained. This research aimed to develop teaching materials with agricultural insight to introduce of agriculture in primary school students in Indonesia. The research used the research and development (RD) method. Development was carried out using the Borg and Gall model, including: research and informing collecting, planning, preliminary development, and preliminary field testing and main product revision. The research results indicated that: i) the teaching material that was successfully developed was in the form of a textbook entitled “I love agriculture”. This book contains ten materials on agricultural, and ii) the test results showed that the agriculturaloriented teaching materials are of good quality. From the product eligibility test involving material experts and media experts, the average assessment score was 86.25%, while the average assessment score from students reached 85.25%. This research implied that students could get to know and love agriculture through learning activities at school.

Customer satisfaction index in Indonesian student micro credentials program

The Indonesian Student Micro-Credentials Program implemented by Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU) carries 5 courses, all of which are carried out online, in a relatively short time within 2 months. The learning objectives, which are intended to create practical skills, require students to master the courses they follow, thus causing many problems, which have an impact on the satisfaction of the participants of this program. This study aims to measure the customer satisfaction index (CSI) of participants in this program. Of the 514 participants who were used as respondents, 279 respondents filled out the google formula, and the response rate was 54%. The results showed that the CSI value of the program was 0.85, which means that the participants were very satisfied with the implementation of this program at UMSU. Based on the assessment of it is quality, the dimension assessment is carried out in order of the highest average value, namely this program (4.48), interaction and flexibility (4.33), managers (4.24), lecturers (4.23), students (4.20), assessment (4.16), process (4.14), content design (4.15), partners (4.11), and technology (4.05). Based on the assessment of the level of importance or expectation of this program, the dimension assessment is carried out in order of the highest average value, namely this program (4.47), interaction and flexibility (4.38), managers (4.23), lecturers (4.22), process (4.17), content design (4.17), students (4.13), peer (4.13), assessment (4.11) and technology (4.04).

Socio-Cultural Approach through Digital Teaching Modules: A Solution to Improve Beginning Reading Skills in Elementary Schools

The low level of early reading skills among primary school students in Indonesia is one of the significant challenges in education. International evaluations such as PISA show that Indonesian students' basic literacy skills are still below average, affecting their overall academic development. One of the contributing factors to these low results is learning that is less relevant to students' socio-cultural context. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effect of a socio-cultural-based digital teaching module on primary school students' beginning reading skills. This study used a quasi-experimental design with a sample of 200 grade 1 students divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group learned using socio-cultural-based digital teaching modules, while the control group applied conventional learning methods. The instrument used was a beginning reading test with 20 questions that measured the ability to recognize letter symbols, distinguish words based on the same initial letter or syllable, and compose syllables into words. Independent Sample T-Test analyzing an independent sample, ensuring that the ty and homogeneity tests were met. The results revealed significant differences between the experimental and control groups, with the experimental group showing more significant improvement in all indicators of beginning reading ability. Further discussion showed that the socio-cultural-based approach in this module made learning more relevant, exciting and interactive for students, ultimately improving their reading comprehension and motivation. In addition, integrating digital technology in this module supports flexibility and continuity of learning, allowing students to learn according to their pace and needs. This research has important implications, namely the need for broader implementation of Socio-Cultural Based Digital Teaching Modules in primary schools to improve basic literacy. However, to ensure its successful implementation, adequate technological infrastructure support and teacher training are needed to optimize this digital-based learning in the classroom.

How Aware is Generation Z of Waqf? A Quantitative Study on Maqashid among Indonesian Muslim Students

This study aims to measure the influence of waqf literacy, relative advantage, religiosity, and attitude on waqf intention among Generation Z, specifically Muslim university students in Indonesia. The respondents were 505 Gen-Z students, specifically Muslim students born between 1996 and 2012 in Indonesia who have ever donated to waqf, with primary data collected through questionnaires and analyzed using the Structural Equation Modelling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) technique. In addition, the data were also analyzed using maqashid sharia theory to see the impact of waqf benefits on individuals and society in general. The results show that waqf literacy, perceived benefits of waqf activities, and religiosity level positively contribute to individuals' attitudes towards waqf, influencing Generation Z's intention to participate in waqf activities. As a form of charity derived from the Prophet Muhammad's sunnah, waqf is essential in achieving the maqashid, particularly in protecting wealth (hifz al-mal) and improving social welfare. Therefore, increasing waqf literacy through programs such as the Indonesian Waqf Awareness Movement (GISWAF), as well as improving convenience, accessibility, and regulatory clarity in waqf practices, are proposed to strengthen positive attitudes towards waqf and encourage greater participation of Generation Z in waqf activities.

Incident rates of hallux valgus in female students college in Indonesia

Problems and Purpose. Hallux valgus is a common foot deformity. Hallux valgus is more likely to occur in individuals who frequently wear shoes with pointed toes, as this footwear can contribute to the development of the condition. This incident can affect college students. However, the incidence rate of hallux valgus among students in Indonesia has not been determined. This study was conducted to determine the incidence of hallux valgus in Indonesia. Materials and methods. This research is quantitative, using online questionnaires distributed through social media. A total of 160 female students from various regions of Indonesia participated in the study. Results. Out of 160 respondents there were 36 people used shoes with 1 toe, which were affected by grade 1 hallux valgus. Among those who wore type 1 shoes, 2 individuals had grade 2 hallux valgus, 5 had grade 3, and 1 had grade 4. Among the 37 people who wore type 2 shoes, 17 had grade 1 hallux valgus, 3 had grade 2, and none were affected by grade 4 hallux valgus. Among type 3 shoe users, 17 people had grade 1 hallux valgus, 16 had grade 2, 2 had grade 3, and 1 had grade 4. For type 4 shoe users, 1 person was affected by grade 1 hallux valgus, 1 by grade 2, 1 by grade 3, and 1 by grade 4. Conclusion. HV is a common foot deformity in Indonesia. Shoe type, genetics, and physical activity are associated with a high incidence of hallux valgus in the country.

EFL students' self-efficacy in technology-assisted language learning

Technological advancements are currently available in several areas to meet our daily needs. One such development is the use of technology in education, which has seen a significant increase in recent times due to the Covid-19 epidemic. Although students may be familiar with blended learning and technology, it is important for teachers to assess their level of self-efficacy in using technology effectively in education, as this has a direct impact on their ability to learn and improve their academic performance. This study investigated the level of students' self-efficacy and explored strategies to enhance it among Indonesian students who are now enrolled in an English Language Education program after the outbreak. This survey research integrated both quantitative and qualitative data analysis methods. Data was collected through interviews and questionnaires. A total of 60 students participated in this research. The questionnaire resulted in an overall self-efficacy score of 76.6% for all participants. This percentage indicates the high level of self-efficacy of the students. Each year group is classified as high. Interviews with the students served to validate the questionnaire results and further supported these findings. The majority of students use three ways to improve their English as a Foreign Language (EFL) acquisition. They participate autonomously in English language practice by improving computer skills, using online educational media and resources, and intensifying engagement with teachers and peers through communication platforms.

VIRTUAL FLIPPED CLASSROOM FOR DEVELOPING EFL STUDENTS’ SPEAKING SKILLS: DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION

This study investigated the effectiveness of a virtual flipped classroom in addressing these challenges and enhancing EFL students' speaking abilities. The research involved 40 Indonesian university students, divided equally into experimental and control groups. The experimental group participated in a virtual flipped classroom, completing pre-class online activities and engaging in in-class speaking exercises, while the control group received traditional instruction. Pre- and post-tests assessed speaking skills, supplemented by student surveys. Results revealed significantly higher post-test scores in the experimental group compared to the control group. Furthermore, survey data indicated that students perceived the virtual flipped classroom as effective in promoting active learning and enhancing their speaking skills. This approach shows promise in overcoming cultural barriers to active participation and maximizing limited class time for speaking practice in Indonesian EFL contexts. However, further research is needed to explore long-term effects and optimal implementation strategies across diverse EFL settings.

Factors influencing the completion of extensive reading tasks: A case study of Indonesian students in tertiary EFL class

Extensive Reading (ER) has received considerable attention in foreign language teaching and learning in Indonesia. However, research on student engagement and completion rates of ER assignments in higher education is limited. This qualitative case study investigates the factors that influence the completion of ER assignments among students in a counselling programme at a state university in Kalimantan. Using semi-structured interviews, the study explores students' perspectives and experiences to gain a comprehensive understanding of the challenges they face in completing extensive reading assignments. The findings reveal a complex interplay of factors that impede task completion, including lack of intrinsic motivation and interest in reading, vocabulary difficulties, and the learning environment. These findings highlight the critical role of English language teachers in creating a motivating and supportive learning environment, providing targeted vocabulary instruction and fostering a reading culture to maximise the benefits of ER for language acquisition and academic success in higher education.

ANALYSIS OF FACTORS AFFECTING INVESTMENT DECISIONS WITH FINANCIAL TECHNOLOGY AS AN INTERVENING VARIABLE AMONG STUDENTS OF THE INSTITUTE OF BUSINESS AND TECHNOLOGY PELITA INDONESIA

The purpose of this study is to analyze the influence of financial literacy, self-efficacy and income on investment decisions, as well as whether Financial Technology is able to mediate the influence. The research contributes to the fields of financial behavior and investment decision-making by examining how Financial Literacy, Self-Efficacy, and Income impact students' investment decisions in an academic setting, with a particular focus on the mediating role of Financial Technology (Fintech). The data analysis technique used in this study was SEMPLS with the help of the SmartPLS application. The results of the test were as follows: (1) Financial literacy has a significant positive effect on the investment decisions of Pelita Indonesia students; (2) Self-efficiency had a positive and insignificant effect; and (3) Income had an insignificant positive effect; (4) Financial Technology mediates the effect of Financial literacy on the Investment Decisions of students; and (5) Financial Technology does not mediated the impact of Income on the decision of students. The findings could inform educational institutions and policymakers on how to improve financial literacy programs and support fintech adoption to foster better financial outcomes among students, potentially leading to more financially empowered and responsible young investors.

Pronunciation Patterns and Challenges of the Japanese Long Vowel (Chouon) /ei/ Among Indonesian Students

This study examines the pronunciation patterns of the Japanese vowel sequence /ei/ among 62 students from six universities across six provinces in Indonesia. In Japanese, the vowel sequence /ei/ is commonly neutralized to /e:/. According to Takayama (1992), this neutralization is incomplete in formal or careful speech, where /ei/ is pronounced distinctly as /ei/. Hashimoto (2006) observed that speakers alternate between /ei/ and /e:/, particularly at the ends of sentences. This research explores how Indonesian students, who typically pronounce words according to their written forms, produce the vowel sequence /ei/ in both the initial and final positions of familiar Japanese words. This study was conducted between January to June 2024. Participants were tasked with identifying instances where native Japanese speakers used the long vowel /ei/ in sentences. They then recorded their pronunciations of these words in various positions. The recordings were analyzed using PRAAT software. Results show that native Japanese speakers typically pronounce /ei/ as a long /e:/ with an average duration of 0.173 seconds. In comparison, Indonesian learners pronounced /ei/ in "reizouko" with an average duration of 0.204 seconds and in "yotei" with 0.148 seconds, indicating a tendency for longer pronunciation at the beginning of words. The longest recorded duration was 0.49 seconds, and the shortest was 0.04 seconds, possibly due to hesitation. Furthermore, learners tended to simplify the /ei/ sound, especially at the start or end of sentences. This study highlights the need for targeted pronunciation instruction and additional practice time in Japanese language curricula to address these specific phonetic challenges.

Analysis of the ability of prospective biology teachers to develop teaching modules on the kampus mengajar program

Kampus Mengajar is a program intended for university students in Indonesia to establish partnerships with schools and prepare themselves as future professional educators. Student participation in the Kampus Mengajar program requires mastery of pedagogical competencies, one of which is the development of teaching modules as a learning design that will be implemented. The purpose of this study was to describe the ability of Biology Education students of FKIP UNTAN to develop teaching modules, specifically, students who participated in the Kampus Mengajar Batch 6 (KM6). This research is descriptive qualitative research conducted by observing the completeness of the components of the 14 teaching modules developed. Based on the analysis conducted, it is known that the average percentage of general information is 98.81% with a very good category, the main components are 97.62% with a very good category, and the appendices are 78.57% with a good category. Overall, the average of all components is 92.44%, so it can be concluded that the ability of Biology Education students at FKIP UNTAN to develop teaching modules can be categorized as very good. The results obtained show that there are still flaws in the 14 teaching modules analyzed. Students need to develop their pedagogical professionalism so that their knowledge and skills in developing teaching modules increase.

Students' Science Literacy Profile in Terms of Argumentation Competence on Ecosystem Material

Current curricula integrate technological skills, knowledge, abilities, and competencies, as well as skills and attitudes, with reading and writing teaching. As a result, information and communication technology is crucial to the implementation of a typical curriculum. Students in Indonesia generally have a low level of science literacy. Therefore, this study aims to test the availability of science literacy skills of high school students. The sample selected for this study was a student of 7 grader consisting of 34 people. The methodology used in this study is descriptive-quantitative research, where this study uses descriptives, such as size, quantity, or frequency in its range. The instrument used in this study is a double-selection test, consisting of six subjects according to the competence indicator of science literacy ability. In this study it was found that the achievement of scientific literacy competence aspects of competence on indicators explain the phenomena scientifically categorized very well, then the ability on the indicator to evaluate and design scientific research categorized well. So, it can be concluded that the average literacy of science on the overall aspect of competence is in good category.

Workshop on Compiling Scientific Articles and Processing Quantitative Data for Publication in Reputable Journals at the Indonesian Students Association in Thailand (PERMITHA)

The purpose of Community Service to improve the skills and knowledge of Indonesian students who are members of PERMITHA in compiling scientific articles and processing quantitative data, so that they can produce scientific works that are worthy of being published in reputable international journals such as Scopus. This activity was carried out on May 15, 2024 which was attended by around 20 participants held at SEA JUNCTION Bangkok Thailand. The results of the respondent data analysis found an increase in the understanding and motivation of training participants. Participant responses were dominated by positive responses to the quality of the Trainer, the quality of the training material, the quality of the facilities and accommodation provided in the training activities

Conducting research and publishing the results of the research and its analysis is one of the main criteria that must be fulfilled by lecturers in order to fulfill the responsibilities of lecturers as part of the Tridharma of Higher Education. The relevance of lecturers conducting investigations, research, and publishing scientific articles is raised substantially by the demands for publication by the higher education community. According to the Regulation of the Minister of Administrative Reform and Bureaucratic Reform (PAN RB) Number 17 of 2013 and the Regulation of the Minister of Education and Culture Number 92 of 2014 issued by the Minister of Education and Culture, academic promotion is recognized for publication in nationally accredited scientific journals as well as international reputable journals in their respective fields. This rule provides direction so that scientific publications and functional positions of lecturers in Indonesia continue to increase. The skills to write and publish scientific articles are very important for researchers, lecturers, and students in Indonesia. However, most of them still have difficulty writing down their findings in the form of scientific publications and publishing them in well-known international journals. Therefore, this activity which is part of community service is carried out to cultivate the ability to write and publish scientific publications for the benefit of students, lecturers and researchers in Indonesia. The Zoom Meeting digital platform is used for service-related operations. Researchers, lecturers, and students from various regions in Indonesia participated in this activity. Students' Perception Of Non-Native Japanese Speaker Teacher's Competencies (Nnjsts) : Gender-Based Review

Japanese is one of the foreign languages taught in formal and informal educational institutions in Indonesia. The development of Japanese language learners is increasing quantitatively. In foreign language courses, native and non-native teachers collaborate on pedagogical tasks. This trend is also happening in Japanese foreign language courses. In addition, there are around 6,617 non-native Japanese language teachers (Japan Foundation, 2021). There is an argument that Native Japanese Speaker Teacher's (NJST) has many advantages over Native Japanese Speaker Teacher's (NNJSTs) and that students prefer NNJSTs over NJST, but the argument must be assessed. Many researchers have explored students' perceptions of NJSTs and NNJSTs worldwide in formal education institutions but not in the non-formal education institution sector. This study aims to explore the perception of Indonesian students towards NNJSTs in non-formal educational institutions, namely LPK Fuji Academy Singaraja with all samples coming from active students registered from January to August 2024. This study is a quantitative research with a descriptive approach conducted using an instrument in the form of a closed questionnaire based on the Likert scale. This study revealed that the perception of male and female students did not have a significant difference in their teaching competence based on the theory of Nuibe et al (2006). Male participants rated NNJSTs higher in terms of teaching effectiveness and communication skills, with an average score of 9.8. In contrast, female respondents gave slightly lower ratings in these areas with an average of 7.1. Furthermore, through this research, students need NNJSTs more because they allow for a successful learning process because of effective learning strategies. In addition, NNJSTs also help students in facing difficulties and challenges in their learning process.

Cultural Persons’ Representations in High School English Language Teaching Materials in Indonesia

Integrating both local and target cultures in English Language Teaching Materials and emphasizes the need for balance to promote cultural diversity and understanding become an important thing in today’s era. During teaching practice activities at SMAN 17 Tebo, the researcher found that the cultural materials in the English Teaching Materials used are not balanced between the source culture, target culture, and international culture. This has an impact on cross-cultural understanding and less than optimal cultural awareness among students. The purpose of this research is to explore the representation of cultural persons in government textbook and teacher-made modules. This research uses qualitative content analysis as a research design. This research involved a sample of government-approved English language textbooks entitled “Bahasa Inggris Work in Progress” and a teacher-made module at SMAN 11 Tebo. The results show that from the theme of great athletes in chapter one of the Bahasa Inggris Work In Progress textbook and teacher-made module, it can be seen that the dominant sports branch comes from international culture. While the cultural persons represented as athletes are dominated by the source culture. It is recommended that future development of English language teaching (ELT) materials, both in government textbooks like Bahasa Inggris Work in Progress and teacher-made modules, should strive for a more balanced representation of source culture, target culture, and international culture for fostering intercultural competence among Indonesian students.

How Indonesian Students View Code-Mixing in Daily Conversations

Multilingualism in Indonesia refers to local or regional languages as the first or mother tongue, Bahasa Indonesia as the second or official language, and foreign languages in which English is the most spoken foreign language in Indonesia. Such a condition may bring us to code-mixing. Code-mixing is using more than one language or language variety in conversation. To some linguists, code-mixing is perceived as a negative phenomenon for several reasons, such as reducing the sense of necessity to use the 'original' language of the speakers. However, this view might only be found among the older generation. How about the younger generation's perception of the code-mixing phenomenon? This study explores the students' perception of code-mixing in daily conversations. The study used a questionnaire-based research method and involved 83 respondents from majors such as English education, Islamic broadcasting communication, and management aged 18-23. The results show that 73.5% of the respondents consider code-mixing a normal phenomenon in daily conversations. Furthermore, 51.8% of the respondents perceive code-mixing as usual while engaging in conversation, 41% as a positive phenomenon due to bilingual capacity, and only 7.2% perceive code-mixing as a negative one regarding disrespectful reasons to Bahasa Indonesia.

Introduction to Critical Thinking in Educational Model for Visual Communication Design Methods: Study Case Design Methods Class for Visual Communication Design Program at Binus University, Indonesia.

Based on the Programme for International Students Assessment (PISA), where problem-solving skills and critical thinking were measured the Indonesian students ranked below standard. In a smaller scope, there were other phenomenon in the learning process of a Design Methods class, in the Visual Communication Design programme at Binus University where students struggled to perform design analysis specifically on the part where the process of classifying which data belong to each of the three analytical aspects of the Triadic, despite definitions had been given in the prior session. In The Ethics, Aristotle thought about classifying as one of the thinking processes that would help in the process of analyzing. According to the Reboot Foundation, an institution dedicated to critical thinking research in the United States of America, critical thinking is needed in the decision-making process. The study was conducted to find the influence of the addition critical thinking method in C-F-C Triadic, one of the design thinking methods, in its learning process. The method in this investigation is qualitative primary data collection based on the observation of two different classes, class A and class B. In class A, the learning process was given following the existing learning process, while in class B, an additional short critical thinking demo was given in the first session of the class. The result was elevation in the analysis performance of the students in class B.

SLR: Discovering STEAM Integrated Science Disciplines for Learning Planning for Primary School Students in Indonesia Towards the Era of Society 5.0

This research aims to find elements related to STEAM from 100 Google Scholar indexed articles resulting from scientific research. Elements related to STEAM can be implemented in elementary school students in facing the era of society 5.0. The method used in this research is the SLR (Literature Review System) PCR model (Planning, Conducting, Reporting) with the aim of systematically reviewing the literature to find elements related to STEAM based on research results from the last 7 years (2017-2024). The research results showed that other elements were compared with STEAM, such as language, social sciences, economics, religion, culture and literacy with the terms STREAM, SELAMeT, STREAME, STELAM and STEAMS and were even used as a basis for curriculum development such as in South Korea with the term WS-STEAM . Based on these findings, there are elements that can be used as a reference in developing learning plans in elementary schools towards the era of society 5.0 which are in accordance with the national basic education curriculum, especially in elementary schools in Indonesia, namely language, social (including culture and economics in social science learning ), religious, and literacy.
