Boosting Students’ Learning English Experiences in Islamic Higher Education: The Integration of Artificial Intelligence

The objective of this study is to analyze and elucidate the incorporation of AI technology into the English language instruction process in Islamic universities in Indonesia. It also seeks to identify the obstacles and possibilities that emerge from this integration. The study employed a qualitative methodology, including observations, interviews, and documentation studies to gather data from both lecturers and students at Fatmawati Sukarno State Islamic University (UIN), Bengkulu during the academic year 2024-2025. The findings demonstrated that AI has the potential to enhance the efficiency of English language acquisition by means of tailored and interactive learning. AI facilitates the rapid enhancement of students’ proficiency in speaking, writing, listening, and reading by delivering precise and immediate feedback. Nevertheless, the presence of inadequate infrastructure and a lack of digital literacy among teachers and pupils pose significant barriers that must be surmounted. In order to maximize the capabilities of AI, this paper proposes numerous approaches such as providing training to lecturers, revising the curriculum, and fostering collaboration between educational institutions and stakeholders. Incorporating AI into English language education in Islamic universities not only enhances students’ linguistic abilities, but also equips them to confront worldwide technologies-driven issues.

Implementation of the Use of Instagram @gramatika_arab in Developing Arabic Language Skills for Students of Arabic Language Education of UIN Sunan Kalijaga

Instagram is one of social media equipped with various features and used as a medium of information and communication. One of its functions is to make it easier for Arabic learners to access Instagram accounts that provide several audio-visual-based Arabic content. This research is a qualitative content analysis with Instagram @gramatika_arab as the subject. Data sources in this study consist of primary data sourced from Instagram @gramatika_arab and secondary data in the form of several scientific journals relevant to this study. The data collection method used is the documentation method while data analysis is carried out during the research. The results showed that Instagram @gramatika_arab become one of the accounts providing audio-visual based Arabic content that is widely accessed by Arabic language learners, especially for students of state islamic universities in Indonesia. It is even accessed by several other countries such as Malaysia, Thailand, and Morocco. Content in the form of Arabic quizzes, pamphlets, and handwriting can attract and facilitate Arabic learners in understanding the material. In addition, Arabic language learners can easily access these contents anytime and anywhere.

Equipping prospective teachers for culturally and religiously sensitive sexuality education: curriculum reviews at Islamic universities in Indonesia

ABSTRACT Sexuality education is essential for equipping children to prevent sexual abuse and fostering understanding of their bodies, relationships, and boundaries. Early childhood education programs in Indonesia were recommended to integrate sexuality education courses tailored to child development and sensitive to religious and cultural contexts. This research employed qualitative methods to investigate the integration of sexuality education courses at eight Islamic universities in Indonesia. Data were collected through interviews with eight course instructors and documentation of their Semester Learning Plans, using content and thematic analysis. Findings revealed that while two universities offered dedicated sexuality education courses, six integrated them into child development and parenting psychology courses. Dedicated sexuality education courses had more comprehensive learning objectives compared to integrated approaches. Teaching methods predominantly included lectures, paper presentations, with some incorporating field studies and project-based learning. Challenges included credit allocation impacting study durations, which hindered the integration of specialized courses like sexuality education. Enhancing pedagogy and ensuring effective delivery of sexuality education were identified as crucial tasks requiring the refinement of curricula in early childhood education. This approach would enable prospective educators to impart knowledge sensitively, taking into account children’s developmental stages and cultural-religious norms.

Integration of Artificial Intelligence in Islamic Higher Education: Comparative Responses between Indonesia and Thailand

This study aims to compare the responses of Islamic Universities in Indonesia and Thailand to the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in Islamic education learning. This comparative qualitative research collected data from in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and analysis of relevant documents at UIN Walisongo Semarang (Indonesia) and Darul Maarif Islamic College Patani (Thailand). The collected data were analyzed thematically using triangulation, member checking, and audit trail validation models. The findings of this study show similarities and differences; both institutions have not specifically incorporated AI into the formal curriculum as a course, only integrating it implicitly in the hidden curriculum such as research, workshops, and seminars. Indonesian Islamic universities view AI as an important tool for modernizing Islamic education, especially in distance learning and the digitalization of Qur'anic teaching. In contrast, although AI is not explicitly banned in Thailand, there are concerns about its impact on the role of traditional teachers and Islamic cultural values. Regarding ethics, Indonesian students are less likely to consider the potential bias of AI towards Islamic religious information. In contrast, Thai students are more wary of the impact of technology on their religious values. Mastery of AI technology also showed significant differences, with Indonesian students being more advanced.

Language policy and linguistic landscapes in the internationalization of a non-Anglophone university

PurposeInternationalization strategies that have been issued for a decade affect non-Anglophone higher education institutions (HEIs) in the clash of importance in preserving national language or using international languages. One of the observable objects of this dilemma is the inconsistent language display of universities’ public signages as a linguistic landscape (LL). To address these issues, the presence of language policy is urgent unless the preservation of the national language is no longer the responsibility of HEIs. However, rigorous discussion about language policy in non-Anglophone HEIs remains limited. This study aims to address the gap by providing a critical analysis of the existing language policy documents in an Indonesian higher education institution that has a multilingual environment and its effect on the LL.Design/methodology/approachThis case study used document analysis and LL analysis. The setting was an Islamic university in Indonesia that represents the trial importance of building religious identity, preserving the national language and engaging with international demands. The data were collected from National Law Enforcement websites, which provided various national policy documents and the institutional documents that were retrieved from the university website by using the document analysis method by Bowen (2009). The secondary data were 216 visual images of public signage in an Islamic university in Indonesia as the representation of multilingual phenomena. The additional data were gathered from a pilot interview with a lecturer and a student.FindingsThis study found that both the national government and institutional administration in Indonesia do not have a language policy that regulates LLs or language preferences in public places for HEIs. The university tends to solely refer to international accreditation policy by using either bilingual English-Indonesian or monolingual English in the public signage. However, the limited use of the Arabic language in specific venues such as mosques and musallas shows that Arabic serves neither as symbolic identity nor communicative functions.Research limitations/implicationsThis study sets a single case study in an Islamic university, and the policy documents were limited to the Indonesian Government and institutions as the representation of non-Anglophone countries. Further studies are expected to have a bigger and larger size of data and settings.Practical implicationsThis study implies that non-Anglophone countries’ governments should start to design and enforce a language policy that preserves national language and facilitates major national and international language communities, such as Thai, Arabic, Javanese and Malay, without being absent in international competitive labeling. A practical implication for religion-based and cultural-based universities is that the function of their Holy Book or local languages can be used as communicative functions to strengthen the religious and local identity.Social implicationsThis study implies that non-Anglophone countries’ governments should start to design and enforce a language policy that preserves their national language without being absent in international competitive labeling.Originality/valueGiven the fact that there is limited awareness to bring the discussion about LL patterns into language policy issues in non-Anglophone countries, this study was originally conducted as a case study to pilot the discussion about the absence of language policy as represented through LLs in Indonesia. This case study was brought up as a pilot discussion to urge non-Anglophone countries lawmakers to issue language policy at the university level. This message is meant to respond to internationalization programs that can potentially jeopardize the existence of the linguistic and cultural diversity of non-Anglophone countries.

Determinants of E-Learning Acceptance in Indonesia Post-COVID-19 and Its Impact on Students’ Technopreneurship

Objective: This research aims to address the gaps in country-specific e-learning studies by examining the key factors influencing e-learning adoption in Indonesia. Grounded in a comprehensive literature review on flow theory, service quality, and technology acceptance models, the study develops a research model that includes four independent variables (instructor characteristics, teaching materials, content design, and enjoyment), two belief variables (perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use), and one dependent variable (intention to use e-learning). Method: Data were collected from 404 respondents, comprising students and lecturers at state Islamic universities in Indonesia, using convenience sampling. The study employed SEM-PLS for data analysis, validating the research instrument's reliability and validity. Results: The results offer insights into the managerial implications and suggest directions for future research in e-learning adoption. Its results confirm six hypotheses. Novelty: This study fills a gap in e-learning adoption research by focusing on Indonesia and integrating flow theory, service quality, and technology acceptance models. It highlights the roles of perceived playfulness, ease of use, and instructional content design in influencing e-learning adoption while challenging the expected impact of instructor characteristics. This research provides fresh insights into technology-driven learning in the context of developing countries.

Efisiensi Kurikulum Perguruan Tinggi Islam di Indonesia: Tinjauan Literatur tentang Peningkatan Kompetensi Intelektual dan Kesiapan Kerja Melalui Pendidikan Agama Islam

This study aims to analyze the efficiency of the curriculum of Islamic universities in Indonesia in ensuring the readiness of students to enter the workforce, by reviewing the role of Islamic religious education in improving intellectual competence. Through a literature study approach, this study identifies the challenges and opportunities faced by Islamic universities in integrating religious values ​​with the intellectual and professional needs of students. The main focus of this study is the effectiveness of the curriculum in balancing theoretical aspects of religion and practical skills needed in the workplace. This study found that the curriculum of Islamic universities in Indonesia has attempted to adopt an integrative approach that combines religious education with the development of soft skills and hard skills that are relevant to professional careers. However, there are still some weaknesses in the implementation, such as the lack of curriculum adjustment to the dynamics of the labor market, as well as the imbalance between religious education and practical skills. The results of this study indicate that Islamic religious education has an important role in shaping the character and professional ethics of students, which are the main capital in entering the workforce. Therefore, increasing the efficiency of the curriculum through collaboration between academics, industry practitioners, and policy makers is needed to ensure that students' intellectuality is in accordance with the demands of the workplace. This study contributes to the academic discussion on the reform of Islamic higher education curriculum and emphasizes the importance of Islamic religious education in producing graduates who are not only intellectually competent, but also have strong ethical values ​​to face professional challenges. The implication of this study is the need for a more flexible and adaptive curriculum strategy to improve the competitiveness of Islamic higher education graduates in the global job market.

Exploring Language Proficiency: Dynamics of Acquiring Arabic Speaking Skills from Stephen Krashen's Perspective At Islamic Universities

Understanding the dynamics of acquiring Arabic speaking skills is crucial in the context of Islamic universities, where language proficiency is integral to academic success and personal development. This study aims to explore the process of acquiring Arabic speaking skills from Stephen Krashen's perspective at two undisclosed Islamic universities in Indonesia. Using a qualitative case study design, the research employs interviews with lecturers and students as the primary data collection technique. The analysis is conducted descriptively, involving stages of data collection, reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that Arabic speaking skills are acquired through two main approaches. Within the classroom, intensive learning is facilitated through a direct method emphasizing language practice, supported by a curriculum focused on daily themes and language reinforcement programs. Outside the classroom, students engage in active communication in Arabic in various environments, such as dormitories, mosques, and cafeterias, while participating in activities that support language acquisition. These factors, combined with student motivation and a conducive learning environment, significantly contribute to the acquisition of Arabic speaking skills. The study concludes that the different learning approaches at the two universities effectively enhance students' Arabic speaking proficiency. Key factors contributing to successful language learning include the presence of Arabic language environments, appropriate curricula, active learning methods, individual motivation, and practical experiences outside the classroom, such as internships or student exchange programs. The research suggests that educators and students should focus on creating immersive language environments and incorporating practical experiences to maximize language acquisition.

Legal Culture and Disability Rights in Indonesian Islamic Higher Education: A Review of Practices

This research aims to examine disability rights in relation to Islamic universities in Indonesia, paying attention to the legal culture concerning equal opportunities for disabled people. As a qualitative study with an empirical legal research method, this research will therefore gather information from various sources to examine current practices concerning regulations, facilities, and academic and social support, and disability education in Islamic higher learning institutions. The findings indicate that there is a major disparity between the legislation and the realities on the field. Implementation of strategies is poor, and a number of strategies are even ineffectual. Lack of physical infrastructure, academic accommodations, and training on the disability topics are some of the main challenges regarding full inclusion. Based on the study findings, it is suggested to enhance and expand the existing policies that include all parties and policies based on Islamic values that support equality and social justice. The final section reiterates the call for the reform of institutional culture and the advocacy of continuous public education to achieve cultural change.

Fostering Creative Writing through Poetry in EFL Classroom

This study was conducted to examine how the ELT teacher implements creative writing through poetry in the ELT classroom during pandemic and to describe how the students express their emotions through tone of poetry in their creative writing. It is due to the existence of creative writing in language teaching and learning practice is significant to gaining students’ creativity and thinking. One of them is writing poetry. However, few literatures discussed on the method used by teachers through writing poems as well as the concern for emotion and tone embedded in students’ writing products. This study used qualitative descriptive with Indonesian EFL university students of the non-English department at an Islamic University in Indonesia as the participants. The result shows that teachers use student-centered methods to implement creative writing through poetry in the classroom during the global COVID-19 pandemic. The meeting was organized using Zoom Meeting with performing Warm-Up, Lead-In (Creation of Poem and Reading the Poem), and Follow-up. In addition, it was also found that the student’s creative works posted on Instagram were based on the negative variations of poetry tone including threatening, painful, and discouraged. The study underscores the pedagogical efficacy of student-centered creative writing in ELT, highlighting its role in enhancing emotional intelligence and validating the integration of digital platforms for remote learning. It advocates for culturally responsive curricula that leverage creative expression as a conduit for emotional articulation and critical thinking

Article this aim elaborate arguments about application multiculturalism at PTKIN based on experience at State Islamic University Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi, State Islamic University Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, State Islamic University Malik Ibrahim Malang, State Islamic University Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, and State Islamic University Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung about accessibility student diffable, availability student foreign and affirmation non-Muslim students. Study this use method qualitative with type study field; primary data in the form of observation, interview deep, and studies documentation. The finding explain that accessibility student disabled, availability student foreign and affirmation to non-Muslim students as argument important for implementation of multiculturalism on each campus have difference on level understanding and practice empirical. This thing caused limitations of the programs offered and limitations facility support owned campus. Article this give contribution for PTKIN in confirm existence campus as multicultural campus.

How green cultural festivals can increase environmental performance in Islamic University?: human resource perspective

PurposeThis study aimed to examine the role of green human resource management on environmental performance at Islamic universities, with the mediating effect of green cultural festivals and the moderating role of individual green values.Design/methodology/approachThe research employed random sampling techniques by selecting a sample of 192 students from various Islamic universities in Indonesia. The participants were selected through an online survey. In addition, data analysis was done using the structural equation modelling-partial least squares (SEM-PLS) technique with the SmartPLS 3.0.FindingsImplementing green human resource management has become a crucial factor in enhancing the environmental performance of Islamic universities. Moreover, green cultural festivals function as an intermediary variable. At the same time, individual green values exhibit a moderating variable that can enhance the influence between green human resource management and environmental performance.Practical implicationsImplementing an effective green human resource management strategy enhances environmental performance. Green human resource management has assisted universities in creating a generation of graduates with a solid commitment to ecological sustainability and raised awareness of the significance of conserving the environment. As a result, this commitment equips students to become agents of change in society upon graduation. Furthermore, campuses need to integrate environmental curriculum components into all study programs, as students need to understand the significant impact of environmental stewardship from both Islamic and scientific perspectives.Originality/valueThis research provides a novel perspective on how Islamic universities are exceptionally well-equipped to create environmental awareness and values that students can practically apply post-graduation using green cultural festivals, which are regularly held. This study is the first to introduce the concept of green cultural festivals in universities utilising the basis of combining green culture with cultural festivals with the theoretical background of resource-based theory.

Translation and Semantic Shift of Islamic Vocabulary in English Abstracts: A Corpus-Based Study at an Indonesian Islamic University

Incorporating Nation’s vocabulary classification, this study investigates the translation and semantic shifts of Islam-related vocabulary in the abstracts of undergraduate and postgraduate theses. A corpus of 810 English and Bahasa Indonesia abstracts, sampled from a total of 1,928, was analyzed using Antwordprofiler and Antconc software. Findings indicate that translation strategies employed include phonetic alteration, pure borrowing, and one-to-one translation. Specifically, loanwords of Arabic origin were predominantly translated using pure borrowing, with some phonetic and/or orthographic modification in both Bahasa Indonesia and English. The translated vocabulary primarily consisted of Arabic-origin words with Bahasa Indonesia orthographic adaptations rather than their original Arabic forms. Additionally, semantic shifts were observed in the adoption of Islam-related Arabic vocabulary into Bahasa Indonesia. This is attributed to 1) the introduction of Quranic meanings, often differing from the common understanding of Arabic words at the time of the Quran’s revelation, and 2) modifications to accommodate the traditions of Indonesian local Muslim communities. The implications of this study highlight the need for translators to be aware of the cultural and religious contexts that influence semantic shifts. Moreover, this research underscores the importance of understanding the dynamic nature of language in the context of religious texts, which can lead to more accurate and culturally sensitive translations.

Exploring Knowledge Sharing, Retention, and Production in Indonesian Islamic Universities: A Case Study Approach

This study investigates the processes of knowledge sharing, retention, and production within Indonesian Islamic universities, employing a case study approach. The research prioritizes qualitative data collected through interviews, observations, and documentation studies. Data analysis involved descriptive methods based on events observed during field activities. Findings reveal that knowledge sharing among lecturers primarily revolves around interaction, communication, and the exchange of information, knowledge, and experiences both face-to-face and virtually. Policies at the faculty and program levels facilitate these activities, emphasizing the collaboration between senior and junior lecturers in research and community service. Knowledge production is inherently linked to knowledge sharing and retention, occurring organically within the university setting. However, the contribution and intervention of faculties and study programs remain limited. Enhanced involvement of faculties and programs in implementing knowledge management practices is essential for improving overall performance. Consequently, it is imperative for universities to adopt knowledge management as a foundational aspect of their operations.

MANAGEMENT OF ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY IN INDONESIA: A LITERATURE STUDY

This study aims to analyze and describe the management of Islamic universities in Indonesia. This research is qualitative with the type of library approach (library research). The management of Islamic universities plays a crucial role in advancing Islamic education and producing a young generation of Muslims who are knowledgeable, moral, and ready to face the challenges of the Times. With good management and adaptive to change, PTAI can continue to grow and provide great benefits for the people and nation. The management of Islamic universities plays a very important role in ensuring the success of Islamic education. By facing challenges and implementing the right strategies, PTAI can continue to develop and make significant contributions to society and the nation the management of Islamic universities is a complex field and demands attention to various aspects of Education, Resource Management, as well as interaction with stakeholders. Improving the quality and relevance of education, effective and efficient management, and student character development are some of the key factors to achieve the goals of the institution. Through the right strategy and the implementation of good governance, Islamic religious universities can become institutions that excel in providing quality education, producing useful research, and contributing positively to society. Thus, Islamic universities will be able to produce graduates who are not only academically competent, but also with integrity and noble character, ready to face global challenges while still holding fast to Islamic values

Penerapan Assessment Of, For Dan As Learning Dalam Perkuliahan Di Perguruan Tinggi Keagamaan Islam Indonesia

The research aims to describe (1) how assessment of learning (AoL), assessment for learning (AfL) and assessment as learning (AaL) are applied by lecturers in Islamic universities in Indonesia, (2) what steps of the AaL the lecturers take, (3) how the lecturers give feedback of the AaL to students in the sociocultural-regious context of Indonesia Islamic universities, and (4) what problems and solutions of applying the AaL. The research methodology is an explanatory sequential mixed-methods. The population is lecturers of Islamic universities in Indonesia and the sample is 108 lecturers by cluster random sampling. The lecturers applying the AoL, AfL and AaL unitedly and separately in high level are 10 (9,26%)—19 (17,59%) people, and those specifically applying the AaL are 10 (9,26%) people. Steps of the AaL taken by the lecturers are (1) writing and distributing teaching plans to students, (2) motivating students to do self-regulated learning, (3) asking students to assess student’s own learning outcome, (4) asking students to assess their colleagues’ learning outcome and (5) giving feedback to students. The lecturers give feedback to students in Indonesia Islamic universities. Problems of applying the AaL deal with the lectuers’ low understanding of the AaL and students’ low level of self-regulated learning.

Navigating the interplay between Sustainable Leadership, Relational Capital, and Academic Performance in Higher Education

Higher education is widely recognized as a pivotal factor in supporting the implementation of sustainable development goals (SDGs) through research, teaching and learning, collaboration, and management governance. Therefore, this research aimed to analyze the impact of leadership styles on academic performance, examine relational capital as a mediator in the relationship between leadership styles and academic performance, investigate the effect of sustainability leadership on curriculum design, and assess the influence of curriculum design on academic performance. The population consisted of lecturers from the Faculty of Economics at State Islamic Universities in Indonesia, the Islamic Science University of Malaysia (USIM) in Malaysia, and the Faculty of Islamic Studies, Department of Sharia and Economics, at the University of Malaya. With a population of 783 individuals and a precision of 5%, the sample size was determined to be 265 lecturers, and Partial Least Square (PLS) was used to test the hypotheses. The results showed that sustainable leadership did not affect academic performance. Furthermore, relational capital mediated the relationship between sustainable leadership and academic performance. Sustainable leadership and curriculum design directly affected academic performance. The findings highlighted the crucial role of leadership in facilitating curriculum design, relational capital, and academic performance. By emphasizing relational capital, higher education institutions proactively enhanced academic performance. Future research should also consider other important factors related to academic performance and explore different behavioral effects and leadership styles.

INTEGRASI KEILMUAN ISLAM HOLISTIK-INTEGRATIF PERGURUAN TINGGI DI INDONESIA

There are various ways of integrating holistic-integrative Islamic scholarship in the era of postmodernism such as in Indonesia today. This qualitative descriptive writing with a literature study aims to discuss the holistic-integrative integration of Islamic knowledge in higher education in Indonesia. The data analysis technique uses content analysis by sorting data according to the research objectives and problems. This research found the following two things. First, in essence, the integration of Islamic scholarship from holistic-integrative postmodernism-era thinkers is a criticism of the normative-theological Islamic scientific paradigm of the traditionalism era as well as a criticism of the empirical-sociological Islamic paradigm of the modernism era. Second, the essence of the integration of Islamic science in the postmodern era of religious universities in Indonesia is to end the dichotomy of science and religious science for scientific construction in the future. Several Islamic universities in Indonesia have carried out scientific integration, including UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta with the concept of Reintegration of Sciences in Islam, UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta with the concept of Integration-Interconnection using the Spider Web metaphor, UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang with the concept of Integration of Science in Islam with the Tree of Knowledge metaphor, UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung with the concept of Wahyu Guiding Knowledge with the wheel metaphor, UIN Alauddin Makasar with the concept of Integration and Interconnection of Science and Religious Knowledge with the metaphor of the Tree of Science Cells, and others.
