The ‘CSR facade’ of the hospitality industry: The importance of social responsibility in fighting sex trafficking and illegal sex purchases in hotels

Hotels are often regarded as (un)wittingly complicit in terms of sex traffickers using their facilities for illegal sex purchases. This article examines chain employees’ experiences of individual social responsibility (ISR) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the interaction between hotels and three stakeholder groups (online booking channels; governmental and non-governmental organizations; and nearby hotels) in the fight against sex trafficking and illegal sex purchases. Employee perspectives were gathered through semi-structured interviews in Sweden and the Netherlands, two countries with distinctive prostitution legislation. The findings highlight that the hotel employees found tensions between ISR and CSR and the relationship with the external stakeholders challenging. What became apparent was that CSR is often a facade used to report back positive results to external stakeholders rather than CSR and ISR playing a proactive role in fighting sex trafficking and illegal sexual purchases. We conclude by arguing for the necessity to better understand the relationships between ISR and CSR within the hospitality industry and suggesting that there remains a need for better understandings of how CSR can work across industry stakeholders and within academic research in order to ensure actionable outcomes that make a difference.

The Impact of Psychological Capital on Job Satisfaction among Employees with Individuals’ Social Responsibility as a Mediator

Research on individual social responsibility is lacking. This study evaluates the psychological capital (PsyCap), personal social responsibility (PSR), and job satisfaction (JobSat) among 775 Saudi private and public sector workers, married and single. Data was collected electronically using a random and secure sampling and analyzed by SPSS and Amos to test the study’s hypotheses. The study lasted from March through October 2022. This study used structural equation modeling, confirmatory factor analysis, and descriptive analysis. Harman’s single-factor test showed that six factors had eigenvalues more than 1, and the initial factor’s variance explained was 27.88%, far below the 40% threshold. The results presented showed that PsyCap had a significant positive predictive influence on JobSat and PSR. Amos’s analysis shows that PSR mediated the association between JobSat and PsyCap. The Bootstrap mediation effect test findings showed that the 95% confidence interval for PsyCap on JobSat extended from 0.18 to 0.34. The study also illuminates processes that mediate the association between PsyCap and JobSat and examines newer concepts like social responsibility and the workplace.

The impact of exposure to a scientific role model on Chinese young adults’ compliance with governmental COVID-19 restrictions: a moderated serial mediation model

During the COVID-19 pandemic, governments across the globe enacted recommendations and restrictions to contain the spread of COVID-19. This study examines the influence of media exposure to Nanshan Zhong, one of China’s top respiratory experts and who has been a leading figure in combating the COVID-19 pandemic, on Chinese young adults’ compliance with governmental COVID-19 restrictions. Based on social cognitive theory, we undertook a serial mediation model in which media exposure to Nanshan Zhong was associated with compliance with governmental COVID-19 restrictions via wishful identification and individual social responsibility. We also examined whether the indirect relationship was more substantial for young adults with higher levels of self-influencer congruence. Analysis of the data from 465 young Chinese adults has provided tentative support for the hypothesized relationships. The results show that media exposure to Nanshan Zhong was positively related to compliance with governmental COVID-19 restrictions directly or indirectly via (1) wishful identification and (2) wishful identification and individual social responsibility sequentially. In addition, the indirect associations were contingent on self-influencer congruence. The relationship is stronger for those with higher levels of self-influencer congruence. The findings have important implications for communication research on health education and health promotion intervention designs.

Knowledge and Values: The Importance of Personal Social Responsibility for Education, Management, and Sustainable Development

Social responsibility is a multidimensional construct which manifests itself in many areas of human life – in both the private and professional spheres. In business, people’s individual attitudes are often the starting point for organizational activities. Even the most ethical business behavior, if not matched by changes on the part of individuals, will not create a change on a larger scale. Thus, personal social responsibility can be defined as a key element of corporate social responsibility (CSR), because the implementation of this idea in business depends on the behavior of the individuals working in the company.
 The main purpose of the article is to investigate published knowledge concerning the concept of personal or individual social responsibility (PSR or ISR) and the personal or individual social responsibility scale. The authors made a systematic literature review, analyzing full-text scholarly articles published between 2000 and 2021. International databases and journal libraries – EBSCO, JSTOR, Mendeley, Wiley Online Library, Web of Science, and Scopus – were searched using the logical phrases “personal social responsibility,” “individual social responsibility,” “personal social responsibility scale,” and “individual social responsibility scale.”
 The analysis shows that the concept of individual/personal social responsibility is considered in the literature in various contexts, though few works are available on this concept and even fewer describe its indicators. Using keywords relevant to the area, 14 publications were selected for analysis. This leads to the conclusion that there is a research gap in this area, which the authors intend to fill in the course of further research.

Neoliberalizing Subjects through Global ELT Programs

AbstractA recent surge in textbooks studies has revealed a closer link with neoliberalism and the way they construct neoliberal subjects. This paper uses Foucauldian governmentality as the conceptual lens to analyze the neoliberal discourses in EFL textbooks used in English Access Microscholarship (EAM)—one of the US‐aided global ELT programs in Pakistan. English language learners' views on course outcomes and textbooks were also examined. The study shows that among others, English as a neoliberal life skill, celebrity culture, consumerism, entrepreneurship, and individual and corporate social responsibility dominate textbooks. It is thus found that textbooks play an important role in neoliberalizing learners. Moreover, English language learners perceive English as a key to economic success. They also value consumerism, branding, and personal responsibility. In light of the study findings, we suggest a decolonial option, reflective activism, and post‐method pedagogy as possible alternatives at the micro‐, meso‐, and macro‐levels to resist the discourses of neoliberalism and colonial power patterns entrenched in a postcolonial society like Pakistan.

The role of individual social responsibility and corporate social responsibility in the tax fraud war: A comparison between the priorities of Italian and Romanian consumers

AbstractCorporate social responsibility (CSR) and fiscal responsibility have become a hot topic of debate in recent years. Many studies have investigated CSR and tax avoidance; however, such studies have overlooked countries' tax cultures and fiscal responsibility from a historical perspective and have not addressed how these elements affect current tax avoidance practices. Using a questionnaire, that was administered to a sample of Italian and Romanian respondents, and inferential techniques (Mann–Whitney‐test and correlation‐test) the paper tries to understand the aspects that be useful in the future development and implementation of more robust fiscal ISR and CSR processes. Our results reveal similarities and differences between the relevance of certain aspects between countries, identifying tax culture as a distinctive element from a geographical point of view. Despite the considerable differences, we found a strong demand for greater transparency of the company with administrations and communities and desire for the development of initiatives to spread a responsible tax culture.

Gender differences in professional social responsibility: Are women more responsible at work than men?

There is overwhelming evidence that companies with women on their boards of directors have higher levels of Corporate Social Responsibility. The relation between professional women and collective or organisational responsibility has been widely studied. However, to date there has been little research into the individual attitudes of women towards social responsibility. The purpose of this study is to analyse the differences in attitudes towards social responsibility between men and women in their professional life. A study sample (N = 524; 347 women; M edad = 37) was assembled using the LinkedIn social media platform and participants, after providing their informed consent, were asked to answer the Professional Social Responsibility Questionnaire. The results showed significant differences in Professional Social Responsibility between men and women, with moderate effect (t (522) = 2.078; p = 0.038; η 2 = 0.191), in favour of women. The women participants scored higher in the dimensions Discovery of Personal Values (t (522) = 2.342; p = 0.020; η 2 = 0.216) and Social Awareness (t (522) = 2.179; p = 0.030; η 2 = 0.201), both with representative effect sizes. These results suggest that the greater commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility of companies with women on their boards of directors is due, in part, to the greater individual or personal social responsibility of women. Higher levels of Discovery of Personal Values and Social Awareness amongst women may also result in better decision-making, ultimately accruing to the benefit of the company in terms of its financial results and reputation.

Postmodernizm, COVID-19 Pandemisi ve Hemşirelerin Yaşamı:Bireysel Haklar ve Sosyal Sorumlulukların Sınırları:Sistematik Derleme

Postmodernism paradigms have improved nursing knowledge, at least in research and theory development. However, after the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, we realized some crucial negative elements of postmodernism, like leaving preventive measures and vaccination to individuals'' decisions, which may endanger nurses' and medical staff's lives. During the pandemic, nurses were dissatisfied with the authorities'' poor performance in providing facilities, equipment, medication, vaccines, and legislation of effective primary prevention measures. Also, they were disappointed with peoples' careless behavior in wearing masks, keeping social distance, and avoiding crowdings. COVID-19 also revealed the differences in perception of individual rights and social responsibility, which may profoundly affect the lives of people and health workers. Balancing individual rights and social responsibility is crucial in a community of individuals of different backgrounds, orientations, and interests. The dominant paradigm of postmodernism among some nations and politicians postponed decision-making regarding prevention measures or even their necessity which cost thousands of lives, including the lives of nurses and doctors. Leaving the use of personal protective equipment, holding meetings, and vaccination to the will of people were all in light of postmodernist thoughts that say no one has the right to restrict others' freedom. The health staff expects policymakers to meet their concerns and back them up by passing laws balancing individual rights and social responsibility. This article aimed to open a novel discussion around the impact of postmodernist thoughts on the safety and life of nurses and medical staff during the pandemics and their expectations from lawmakers for future confrontations.

A Research on Individual Social Responsibility and Social Entrepreneurship Tendencies of University Students

The aim of this research is to examine the individual social responsibility and social entrepreneurship levels of university students in terms of some variables and to examine the effects of individual social responsibility levels on their social entrepreneurship orientations. Relational survey model, one of the quantitative research methods, was used in the research. The study group of the research consists of 200 students who study in sports sciences at universities in Turkey. SPSS statistical program was used in the analysis of the data. First, descriptive statistics were examined, and parametric tests were used for inferential statistics. In addition, Independent Samples t Test, Pearson correlation analysis and simple linear regression analysis were performed. When the research findings are evaluated, the fact that students have been involved in a social project before, except for the sub-dimension of financial return, has social entrepreneurship orientations and individual social responsibility levels; Taking the community service practice course has a positive effect on the development of their individual social responsibility levels and their social vision from the dimension of social entrepreneurship. In addition, it has been revealed that university students’ whether they do sports or not has no effect on their individual social responsibility and social entrepreneurship. It has been revealed that as the individual social responsibility levels of recent students increase, their social entrepreneurship orientations also increase, and individual social responsibility has a positive effect on social vision, innovation, sustainability, and social networks in social entrepreneurship sub-dimensions.

Is social capital associated with individual social responsibility? The case of social distancing during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Individual social responsibility is essential to achieving the sustainable development goals of the society, yet there has been very little research on whether and how social and cultural factors influence individual social responsibility. Using the Covid-19 pandemic as our empirical context, this research examines the relationship between social capital and individual social distancing behaviors during the pandemic. Social distancing is a form of socially responsible behavior because it is critical in mitigating the spread of the Covid-19 virus. By exploiting daily mobile GPS location data, we provide strong evidence for the divergent relationships between the two constituents of social capital–civic norms and social networks–and social distancing behaviors. While civic norms are positively associated with social distancing, social networks have a negative association with social distancing. These results are consistent with a nuanced view of social capital: civic norms facilitate cooperation and self-sacrifice for the common good, whereas social networks increase individual embeddedness and hence inertia in maintaining social interactions, resulting in opposite effects on social distancing. Our results contribute to the research at the intersection of social capital and individual social responsibility by highlighting the nuanced effects of social capital on individual responses to the pandemic and provide valuable insights for policymakers and businesses in disaster management.

The Interplay of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) and Individual Social Responsibility (ISR) towards Enhanced Organizational Resilience in MNCs

Individual Social Responsibility (ISR) is becoming a fundamental pillar for companies with transparent Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategies. This approach leverages the inseparability of an individual's cultural and socioeconomic from contextual factors such as environmental, social, economic, and stakeholder perspectives. This paper will focus on the enhancement of organizational resilience through positive interaction between ISR and CSR. CSR is the result of evolutionary practices responding to the fulfillment of society’s demand for more ethical, transparent, and trustworthy organizations. However, research indicates that CSR cannot be effective without adherence to the ISR principles aligned with the demanded premises and values.

Naturalizing Semantics? Beyond <i>Cognitive Neuro-Reductionism</i>: From Varela’s <i>Systemic Cognitive Neuroscience</i> to <i>Complex Realism Sociology</i>

Is it possible to naturalize semantics? Starting from Libet’s 1983 studies, current research developments in neuronal bases of behavior reduce the mind to the brain, with significant implications in reference to issues of free will, imputability and individual behavioral responsibility. However, many criticisms can be made at this approach. This paper shows the limits of Cognitive Neuro-reductionism, especially in the light of Varela’s Systemic Cognitive Neuroscience or Neurophenomenology and the current theoretical revision process of social systems as complex—dynamical, emergent and unpredictable—social systems, or Complex Realism Sociology. Here, there is an agreement point. The conception of living systems as complex system as well as that of social system as complex systems acknowledge the autonomy of human reflexivity capability and free will be able to initiate the chain of events that triggers the process of adaptation to environment and change and social emergence ones, and, in so doing, problematize a neuro-reductionist determinism of cognitive life and behavioral processes, with its dilemmatic consequences on individual social responsibility and, ultimately, on social order possibilities. This being stated, this paper reflects on dialogue possibilities between Varela’s neuroscientific revolution and Complex Realism Sociology. Going beyond the Parsonsian functionalism’s social homeostasis and maintaining the point firm of social emergence and relationship between reflexivity and social morphogenesis, Complex Realism Sociology can dialogue well with Varela’s Neurophenomenology. Lieb’s disciplined analysis shows to be a fruitful ground for interlocution about the understanding of that Organism which cannot be liquidated but must be reinterpreted in its function, about the understanding of neuronal circuits that mediate free will and intersubjectivity, conscious deliberative intentionality and awareness of oneself and others, self-control, perception of time and risk, in other terms, about the understanding our ability to give meaning to the world, to adapt or change it, to know, remember, desire, empathize, socialize and interact. In Varela’s revision, stripped of problematic reductionist claims, Neuroscience can provide to Sociology a wealth of observations that contribute to the understanding of the bodily basis of social interactions and social order. Camus, Roth, Covid-19: the dangers of forgetting

Pandemic literature (and there is a sprawling canon of it) tells us much about the past so that we can learn for our future, but we have been poor students. We should have been better prepared for Covid-19, and even merely scratching the surface of pandemic literature by examining Albert Camus’s The Plague and Phillip Roth’s Nemesis is very revealing. Despite the remarkable heterogeneity of our world, there are some things about disease that are shared globally, and many things that are recorded in literature are pertinent to the current pandemic situation. Remembering past pandemics is vital to dealing with future ones. This article argues that documentation of pandemics offers important reminders of epidemiology but also about how race, class, gender, and sexuality are involved both in the representation and in the movement of disease. Fiction gives us the chance to revise our thinking both about our relationship with microbes and about how we imagine a balance between individual liberties and social responsibility. These matters seemed to many of us entirely novel concerns brought out by the novel coronavirus. In reality, they are not novel and have long been the concerns of pandemic literature. There are great dangers in forgetting this.

How do social responsibility and social entrepreneurship generate value creation in pandemics?

PurposeUsing self-determination theory and individual social responsibility’s (ISRs) association with pure social entrepreneurship, this study aims to answer the following question: How and why have the different actors responded to the crisis caused by the pandemic?Design/methodology/approachQualitative research (multiple case studies) was adopted, resorting to interviewees with seven economic and non-economic actors in the Portugal context.FindingsThe results obtained, using MAXQDA software, show that those carrying out actions of social responsibility have a high degree of self-determination and intrinsic motivation, and are true social entrepreneurs, which lets them improve the well-being of those around them. In addition, these individuals feel good about themselves by performing these actions, as they measure their performance by the social impact of their actions on society in general.Practical implicationsThis study suggest there is a high awareness amongst people to exercise that responsibility in a voluntary way, through humanitarian initiatives and campaigns brought about especially by an unprecedented pandemic. In practice, people joining these initiatives motivate many others towards the causes, creating the will to continue in the future and satisfy unmet needs provoked by social crises.Originality/valueThis study is innovative because it is related to filling the gaps identified, mainly by carrying out an empirical study about ISR, rather than that of firms, where studies are more common.

Individual and global social responsibility levels of social studies pre-service teachers in terms of different variables

<p><span>The purpose of this research was to determine the individual and global social responsibility levels of social studies pre-service teachers in terms of different variables. The research was in survey model. The study group of the research consisted of 179 pre-service teachers who studied at Social Studies Teaching Program in the Faculty of Education at Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University, Turkey in the 2019-2020 academic year. Data collection tools used in the study are a Demographic Information Form developed by the researcher, Individual Social Responsibility Scale and Global Social Responsibility Scale. The data were analyzed through SPSS 20. The results of the study showed that the social studies teacher candidates' levels of individual social responsibility are high while those of global social responsibility are at medium level. It is also found that there is a significant difference in the individual and global social responsibility levels in terms of gender in favor of female pre-service teachers while there is no significant difference in terms of age variable. Also, the results show that the individual and social responsibility levels of pre-service teachers who have foreign friends are higher than those who do not have foreign friends. Another result of the study is that individual social responsibility levels predict social responsibility levels.</span></p>

Dependency, autonomy and child development in Chimamanda Adichie’s Purple Hibiscus

Our literature review shows that Adichie’s works, including Purple Hibiscus, recognize gender marginalization in areas undermined by many African authors. These areas includeparenting and child development that determine individual emotional stabilityand social responsibility. This study interrogates the form of cultural upbringing of a child which stifles the unconscious selfhood of an individual whose existential being is subject to both the conscious and the unconscious. The study focuses onthe subtleties of parenting and character formation in Adichie’s Purple Hibiscus. Tracing individual identity models of ‘dependency’ and ‘autonomy, it further investigates characters’ emotional stability and social responsibilityas outcomes of socio-cultural empowerment through child development processes. The study takes a developmental analysis of characters and circumstances that surround each character’s social behaviour in the novel. This is determined using Erikson’s psychoanalytic models of human development and social r\esponsibility (psychosocial principles). Although parental discipline gives more positive results in child development, extremity, domestic violence and social alienation as child upbringing strategies in Adechie’s Purple Hibiscus are socio-culturally counterproductive.
