Could the Interband Lag of Active Galactic Nucleus Vary Randomly?

The interband lags among the optical broad-band continua of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) have been intensively explored over the past decade. However, the nature of the lags remains under debate. Here, utilizing two distinct scenarios for AGN variability, i.e., the thermal fluctuation of accretion disk and the reprocessing of both the accretion disk and clouds in the broad line region, we show that, owing to the random nature of AGN variability, the interband lags of an individual AGN would vary from one campaign with a finite baseline to another. Specifically, the thermal fluctuation scenario implies larger variations in the lags than the reprocessing scenario. Moreover, the former predicts a positive correlation between the lag and variation amplitude, while the latter does not result in such a correlation. For both scenarios, averaging the lags of an individual AGN measured with repeated and nonoverlapping campaigns would give rise to a stable lag, which is larger for a longer baseline and gets to saturation for a sufficiently long baseline. However, obtaining the stable lag for an individual AGN is very time-consuming. Alternatively, it can be equivalently inferred by averaging the lags of a sample of AGNs with similar physical properties, and thus can be properly compared with predictions of AGN models. In addition, several new observational tests suggested by our simulations are discussed, as well as the role of the deep high-cadence surveys of the Wide Field Survey Telescope in enriching our knowledge of the lags.

Non-thermal radiation from dual jet interactions in supermassive black hole binaries

ABSTRACT Supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs) are natural by-products of galaxy mergers and are expected to be powerful multimessenger sources. They can be powered by the accretion of matter and then radiate across the electromagnetic spectrum, much like normal active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Current electromagnetic observatories have a good chance of detecting and identifying these systems in the near future. However, precise observational indicators are needed to distinguish individual AGNs from SMBHBs. In this paper, we propose a novel electromagnetic signature from SMBHBs: non-thermal emission produced by the interaction between the jets ejected by the black holes. We study close SMBHBs, which accrete matter from a circumbinary disc and the mini-discs formed around each hole. Each black hole ejects a magnetically dominated jet in the direction of its spin through the Blandford–Znajek mechanism. We argue that in such a situation, the interaction between the jets can trigger strong magnetic reconnection events, where particles are accelerated and emit non-thermal radiation. Depending on whether the jets are aligned or misaligned, this radiation can have different periodicities. We model the evolution of the particles accelerated during the dual jet interaction and calculate their radiative output, obtaining spectra and providing estimates for the variability time-scales. We finally discuss how this emission compares with that of normal AGNs.

Tracing the evolving X-ray reverberation lags within an individual AGN light curve

Abstract We present the Granger causality (GC) test for the X-ray reverberation analysis of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). If the light curves in the continuum-dominated band help predict (Granger cause) those dominated by reflection, the Granger lags that associate to the intrinsic reverberation lags can be inferred. We focus on six AGN observed by XMM-Newton, including the sources well-known to exhibit clear X-ray reverberation lags (IRAS 13224–3809 and 1H 0707–495) and those in which reverberation signatures are not well confirmed (MCG–6-30-15, IZW1, Mrk 704 and Mrk 1040). We employ the sliding-window algorithm and estimate the Granger (intrinsic) Fe-L lags along the light curve as the window moves through. This reveals the evolving lags towards the end of some individual observations, suggesting that the corona varies progressively. Occasionally, we observe two clearly separate lags that suggest an extended corona consisting of two zones while producing competing reverberation of two lags. While the GC test is purely hypothetical and might not explain true causality, our conclusion is that the lags are present and could be understood as reverberation lags. Assuming the lags changing solely with the corona, we find that the IRAS 13224–3809 corona varies between ∼10–25 rg and sometimes move to ≳ 50 rg. The corona of 1H 0707–495 and MCG–6-30-15 may be analogous to that of IRAS 13224–3809, while in IZw1, Mrk 704 and Mrk 1040 a more compact corona is expected.

Extreme Variability Quasars in Their Various States. II. Spectral Variation Revealed with Multiepoch Spectra

We previously built a sample of 14,012 extremely variable quasars (EVQs) based on Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and Pan-STARRS1 photometric observations. In this work we present the spectral fitting to their SDSS spectra and study the spectral variation in 1259 EVQs with multiepoch SDSS spectra (after prudently excluding spectra with potentially unreliable spectroscopic photometry). We find a clear “bluer-when-brighter” trend in EVQs, consistent with previous findings of normal quasars and active galactic nuclei. We detect significant intrinsic Baldwin effect (iBeff, i.e., smaller line equivalent width at higher continuum flux in individual active galactic nuclei) in the broad Mg ii and C iv lines of EVQs. Meanwhile, no systematical iBeff is found for the broad Hβ line, which could be attributed to strong host contamination at longer wavelengths. Remarkably, by comparing the iBeff slope of EVQs with archived changing-look quasars, we show that the changing-look quasars identified in the literature are most likely a biased (due to its definition) subpopulation of EVQs, rather than a distinct population of quasars. We also found no significant broad line breathing of Hβ, Mg ii, or C iv, suggesting the broad line breathing in quasars may disappear at longer timescales (∼3000 days).

A Census of WISE-selected Dual and Offset AGNs Across the Sky: New Constraints on Merger-driven Triggering of Obscured AGNs

Pairs of galaxies hosting active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are powerful probes of merger-driven supermassive black hole (SMBH) growth as they can resolve individual AGNs and trace mergers over a large range of physical separations. To exploit this on a large scale for the first time for both obscured and unobscured AGNs, we use the photometric redshifts of AGNs selected by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) to find probabilistic pairs (<100 kpc separations) across the sky, along with a comparison sample of inactive galaxy pairs. Our final sample of integrated pair probabilities yields 198 AGN–AGN pairs (dual AGNs) and 2767 AGN–galaxy pairs (offset AGNs) with uniformly measured AGN and host galaxy physical properties. We find the fraction of galaxy pairs hosting WISE AGNs is dominated by offset AGNs and is significantly elevated above that of inactive galaxies for large host stellar masses. We show how the AGN merger fraction directly increases with AGN extinction for both offset and dual AGNs, with up to ∼40% of heavily obscured AGNs found in galaxy pairs. Elevated AGN merger fractions coincide with increased host specific star formation rates that suggest merger-driven coevolution of galaxies and SMBHs. Among dual AGNs, the most rapid SMBH growth may occur within the less-massive galaxy. Relative to stochastic mechanisms, mergers produce an excess of AGNs at increasingly smaller separations, especially for obscured AGNs (up to a factor of ∼5), and are augmented by correlated triggering. Finally, this excess is stronger than for lower-luminosity optically selected AGNs, regardless of the AGN obscuration level.

The universal shape of the X-ray variability power spectrum of AGN up to z ∼ 3

Aims. We study the ensemble X-ray variability properties of active galactic nuclei (AGN) over large ranges of timescale (20 ks ≤ T ≤ 14 yr), redshift (0 ≤ z ≲ 3), luminosity (1040 erg s−1 ≤ LX ≤ 1046 erg s−1), and black hole (BH) mass (106 ≤ M⊙ ≤ 109). Methods. We propose the use of the variance-frequency diagram as a viable alternative to the study of the power spectral density (PSD), which is not yet accessible for distant, faint, and/or sparsely sampled AGN. Results. We show that the data collected from archival observations and previous literature studies are fully consistent with a universal PSD form, which does not show any evidence for systematic evolution of shape or amplitude with redshift or luminosity, even if there may be differences between individual AGN at a given redshift or luminosity. We find new evidence that the PSD bend frequency depends on BH mass and possibly on accretion rate. We finally discuss the implications for current and future AGN population and cosmological studies.

Active Galactic Nucleus Variability in the Age of Rubin

Over the next 10 years, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory (Rubin) will observe ∼10 million active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with a regular and high cadence. During this time, the intensities of most of these AGNs will fluctuate stochastically. Here, we explore the prospects to quantify precisely these fluctuations with Rubin measurements of AGN light curves. To do so, we suppose that each light curve is described by a damped random walk with a given fluctuation amplitude and correlation time. Theoretical arguments and some current measurements suggest that the correlation timescale and fluctuation amplitude for each AGN may be correlated with other observables. We use an expected-information analysis to calculate the precision with which these parameters will be inferred from the measured light curves. We find that the measurements will be so precise as to allow the AGNs to be separated into up to ∼10 different correlation-timescale bins. We then show that if the correlation time varies as some power of the luminosity, the normalization and power-law index of that relation will be determined to . These results suggest that with Rubin, precisely measured variability parameters will take their place alongside spectroscopy in the detailed characterization of individual AGNs and in the study of AGN population statistics. Analogous analyses will be enabled by other time-domain projects, such as CMB-S4.

The demographics of obscured AGN from X-ray spectroscopy guided by multiwavelength information

ABSTRACT A complete census of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is a prerequisite for understanding the growth of supermassive black holes across cosmic time. A significant challenge towards this goal is the whereabouts of heavily obscured AGN that remain uncertain. This paper sets new constraints on the demographics of this population by developing a methodology that combines X-ray spectral information with priors derived from multiwavelength observations. We select X-ray AGN in the Chandra COSMOS Legacy survey and fit their $2.2\!-\!500\, \mu \mathrm{m}$ spectral energy distributions with galaxy and AGN templates to determine the mid-infrared ($6\, \mu \mathrm{m}$) luminosity of the AGN component. Empirical correlations between X-ray and $6\, \mu \mathrm{m}$ luminosities are then adopted to infer the intrinsic accretion luminosity at X-rays for individual AGN. This is used as prior information in our Bayesian X-ray spectral analysis to estimate physical properties, such as line-of-sight obscuration. Our approach breaks the degeneracies between accretion luminosity and obscuration that affect X-ray spectral analysis, particularly for the most heavily obscured (Compton-Thick) AGN with low photon counts X-ray spectra. The X-ray spectral results are then combined with the selection function of the Chandra COSMOS Legacy survey to derive the AGN space density and a Compton-Thick fraction of $21.0^{+16.1}_{-9.9}{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ at redshifts z &amp;lt; 0.5. At higher redshift, our analysis suggests upper limits to the Compton-Thick AGN fraction of $\lesssim 40{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$. These estimates are at the low end of the range of values determined in the literature and underline the importance of multiwavelength approaches for tackling the challenge of heavily obscured AGN demographics.

Reddening and the shape of the variable component of the continua of active galactic nuclei from the optical to the far-ultraviolet – I

ABSTRACT We analyse the photometric variability of 4611 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe 82. We recover the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the variable flux as a function of wavelength. For rest wavelengths longer than ∼2200 Å, we find that the SED of the variable component of the bluest AGNs is consistent with the Fν ∝ ν+1/3 spectrum predicted for an externally illuminated accretion disc. We confirm there is some residual variable emission corresponding to the ‘small blue bump’ and other broad-line region variability. We interpret steeper optical spectra of the variable component as being due to intrinsic reddening. This is supported by the correlation of the Balmer decrement with the colour excess of the variable component. We find the median internal reddening of SDSS AGNs in Stripe 82 with z &amp;lt; 0.4 to be E(B − V) ≈ 0.10 in agreement with the reddening derived from the Balmer decrement. Individual AGNs in the sample can have E(B − V) &amp;gt; 0.4.

Accretion Disk Size Measurements of Active Galactic Nuclei Monitored by the Zwicky Transient Facility

Abstract We compile a sample of 92 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at z &lt; 0.75 with gri photometric light curves from the archival data of the Zwicky Transient Facility and measure the accretion disk sizes via continuum reverberation mapping. We employ Monte Carlo simulation tests to assess the influences of data sampling and broad emission lines and select out the sample with adequately high sampling cadences (3 days apart in average) and minimum contaminations of broad emission lines. The interband time delays of individual AGNs are calculated using the interpolated cross-correlation function, and then these delays are fitted with a generalized accretion disk model, in which interband time delays are a power function of wavelength, black hole mass, and luminosity. A Markov Chain Monte Carlo method is adopted to determine the best parameter values. Overall the interband time delays can be fitted with the τ ∝ λ 4/3 relation as predicted from a steady-state, optically thick, geometrically thin accretion disk; however, the yielded disk size is systematically larger than expected, although the ratio of the measured to theoretical disk sizes depends on using the emissivity- or responsivity-weighted disk radius. These results are broadly consistent with previous studies, all together raising a puzzle about the “standard” accretion disk model.

Modeling Grain Rotational Disruption by Radiative Torques and Extinction of Active Galactic Nuclei

Abstract Extinction curves observed toward individual Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) usually show a steep rise toward far-ultraviolet (FUV) wavelengths and can be described by the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC)-like dust model. This feature suggests the dominance of small dust grains of size a ≤ 0.1 μm in the local environment of AGN, but the origin of such small grains is unclear. In this paper, we aim to explain this observed feature by applying the RAdiative Torque Disruption (RATD) to model the extinction of AGN radiation from FUV to mid-infrared (MIR) wavelengths. We find that in the intense radiation field of AGN, large composite grains of size a ≥ 0.1 μm are significantly disrupted to smaller sizes by RATD up to d RATD &gt; 100 pc in the polar direction and d RATD ∼ 10 pc in the torus region. Consequently, optical–MIR extinction decreases, whereas FUV-near-ultraviolet extinction increases, producing a steep far-UV rise extinction curve. The resulting total-to-selective visual extinction ratio thus significantly drops to R V &lt; 3.1 with decreasing distances to AGN center due to the enhancement of small grains. The dependence of R V with the efficiency of RATD will help us to study the dust properties in the AGN environment via photometric observations. In addition, we suggest that the combination of the strength between RATD and other dust destruction mechanisms that are responsible for destroying very small grains of a ≤ 0.05 μm is the key for explaining the dichotomy observed “SMC” and “gray” extinction curve toward many AGN.

Ionizing radiation from AGNs at z &amp;gt; 3.3 with the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam Survey and the CFHT Large Area U-band Deep Survey (CLAUDS)

ABSTRACT We use deep and wide imaging data from the CFHT Large Area U-band Deep Survey (CLAUDS) and the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) to constrain the ionizing radiation (Lyman Continuum, LyC) escape fraction from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at z ∼ 3–4. For 94 AGNs with spectroscopic redshifts at 3.3 &amp;lt; z &amp;lt; 4.0, we use their U/i-band flux ratios to estimate LyC transmission of individual AGNs. The distribution of their LyC transmission shows values lower than the range of LyC transmission values for IGM of the same redshift range, which suggests that LyC escape fraction of AGNs at z &amp;gt; 3.3 is considerably lower than unity in most cases. We do not find any trend in LyC transmission values depending on their UV luminosities. Based on the photometry of stacked images we find the average flux ratio of LyC and non-ionizing UV photons escaping from the objects (fLyC/fUV)out = 0.182 ± 0.043 for AGNs at 3.3 &amp;lt; z &amp;lt; 3.6, which corresponds to LyC escape fraction fesc = 0.303 ± 0.072 if we assume a fiducial intrinsic SED of AGN. Based on the estimated LyC escape fraction and the UV luminosity function (UVLF) of AGNs, we argue that UV-selected AGNs’ contribution to the LyC emissivity at the epoch is minor, although the size of their contribution largely depends on the shape of the UVLF.

A Chandra survey of z ≥ 4.5 quasars

ABSTRACT X-ray observations provide a unique probe of the accretion disc corona of supermassive black holes (SMBHs). In this paper, we present a uniform Chandra X-ray data analysis of a sample of 152 z ≥ 4.5 quasars. We firmly detect 46 quasars of this sample in 0.5–2 keV above 3σ and calculate the upper limits of the X-ray flux of the remaining. We also estimate the power-law photon index of the X-ray spectrum of 31 quasars. 24 of our sample quasars are detected in the FIRST or NVSS radio surveys; all of them are radio-loud. We statistically compare the X-ray properties of our z ≥ 4.5 quasars to other X-ray samples of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at different redshifts. The relation between the rest-frame X-ray luminosity and other quasar parameters, such as the bolometric luminosity, UV luminosity, or SMBH mass, shows large scatters. These large scatters can be attributed to the narrow luminosity range at the highest redshift, the large measurement error based on relatively poor X-ray data, and the inclusion of radio-loud quasars in the sample. The LX–LUV relationship is significantly sublinear. We do not find a significant redshift evolution of the LX–LUV relation, expressed either in the slope of this relation, or the departure of individual AGNs from the best-fitting αOX–LUV relation (ΔαOX). The median value of the X-ray photon index is Γ ≈ 1.79, which does not show redshift evolution from z = 0 to z ∼ 7. The X-ray and UV properties of the most distant quasars could potentially be used as a standard candle to constrain cosmological models. The large scatter of our sample on the Hubble diagram highlights the importance of future large unbiased deep X-ray and radio surveys in using quasars in cosmological studies.

Distinct high-energy cutoff variation patterns in two Seyfert galaxies

ABSTRACT Investigating how the cut-off energy Ecut varies with X-ray flux and photon index Γ in individual active galactic nuclei (AGNs) opens a new window to probe the yet unclear coronal physics. So far Ecut variations have only been detected in several AGNs but different patterns have been reported. Here, we report new detections of Ecut variations in two Seyfert galaxies with multiple Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) exposures. While in NGC 3227 Ecut monotonically increases with Γ, the Ecut–Γ relation exhibits a Λ shape in SWIFT J2127.4+5654 (Ecut increasing with Γ at Γ ≲ 2.05, but reversely decreasing at Γ ≳ 2.05), indicating more than a single underlying mechanism is involved. Meanwhile both galaxies show softer spectra while they brighten in X-ray, a common phenomenon in Seyfert galaxies. Plotting all seven AGNs with Ecut variations ever reported with NuSTAR observations in the Ecut–Γ diagram, we find they could be unified with the Λ pattern. Although the sample is small and SWIFT J2127.4+5654 is the only source with Γ varying across the break point thus the only one exhibiting the complete Λ pattern in a single source, the discoveries shed new light on the coronal physics in AGNs. Possible underlying physical mechanisms are discussed.

The origin of the power–law form of the extragalactic gamma–ray flux

The Fermi–LAT telescope has measured the extragalactic gamma–ray background (EGB) generated by the ensemble of all extragalactic sources. The energy distribution of the EGB is well described as a power–law with a spectral index approximately equal to 2.3, and an exponential cutoff, that is consistent with being the effect of absorption of high energy photons assuming an emission that is an unbroken power–law spectrum. The observations of the Fermi telescope have also resolved the EGB, determining that most of it is formed by the sum of the contributions of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) of the blazar class. The spectra of the individual AGN sources have a broad range of spectral shapes, and the brightest and most precisely measured sources have curved spectra that can be fitted with the “log–parabola” (or log–normal) form. This suggests that the power law form of the extragalactic gamma–ray flux emerges as a property of the ensemble of all sources, and not as a universal shape generated by each individual source. This result is consistent with the idea that particle acceleration in blazars can be considered as a “critical phenomenon”. A curved log–parabola (log–normal) form is also required to fit the spectra of many Galactic gamma–ray sources, including the emission from the brightest supernova remnants (SNR), and an intriguing possibility is that also the Galactic cosmic rays are injected in interstellar space by their sources not with a single universal power–law spectrum, as predicted by the commonly accepted models, but instead with a broad range of spectral shapes.

Softening of the Metagalactic Ionizing Background from Internal He ii Absorption in Quasars

Abstract Quasars and other active galactic nuclei (AGN) are significant contributors to the metagalactic ionizing background at redshifts z &lt; 3. Recent Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) composite spectra of AGN find a harder flux distribution in the Lyman continuum, (α s = 1.41 ± 0.15), compared to previous studies. This index appears to be inconsistent with observed He ii/H i absorption ratios (η) in the Lyα forest. We explore the effects of internal AGN absorption in the He ii (4 ryd) continuum using an analytic source-function model of the ionizing background in which the emissivity (j ν ) arises from quasars, reprocessed by the opacity (κ ν ) of the intervening Lyα forest and distinct AGN escape fractions and at 1 ryd and 4 ryd, respectively. We also examine H i and He ii photoelectric heating from the reprocessed background, whose spectral index (α b &gt; α s ) depends on α s , the H i column density slope β, and the ratio . We compare the model to Lyα absorption lines of He ii and H i toward the quasar HE 2347−4342. Internal AGN absorption with but would increase the index by Δα b ≈ 0.3–1.0, corresponding to η = 60–200 for β ≈ 1.5–1.6, in agreement with HST/COS observations at z ≈ 2.5–2.9. The observed range of ratios, η &lt; 200, constrains α b &lt; 3.4 and . Individual AGN with softer spectra, α s &gt; 1.7, and more internal He ii absorption could produce a few absorbers with η &gt; 300, in proximity to AGN transverse to the sight line.

Determining Quasar Orientation

Abstract Since the discovery of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and their subclasses, a unification scheme of AGN has been long sought. Orientation-based unified models predict that some of the diversity within AGN subclasses can be explained by the different viewing angles of the observer. Several orientation categorisations have been suggested, but a widely applicable measure has yet to be found. Using the properties of the ultraviolet and optical broad emission lines of quasars, in particular the velocity offsets and line widths of high-ionisation C iv and low-ionisation Mg ii lines, a correlation has been measured. It is postulated that this correlation is due to the viewing angle of the observer. Comparison with other orientation tracers shows consistency with this interpretation. Using a simulation of a wide angle disk-wind model for the broad emission line region, we successfully replicate the observed correlation with inclination. Future more detailed modelling will not only enable improved accuracy in the determination of the viewing angle to individual AGN, but will also substantially increase our understanding of the emitting regions of AGN.

The spectral energy distributions of active galactic nuclei

AbstarctWe present ongoing work on the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), derived from X-ray, ultraviolet, optical, infrared and radio photometry and spectroscopy. Our work is motivated by new wide-field imaging surveys that will identify vast numbers of AGNs, and by the need to benchmark AGN SED fitting codes. We have constructed 41 SEDs of individual AGNs and 80 additional SEDs that mimic Seyfert spectra. All of our SEDs span 0.09 to 30μm, while some extend into the X-ray and/or radio. We have tested the utility of the SEDs by using them to generate AGN photometric redshifts, and they outperform SEDs from the prior literature, including reduced redshift errors and flux density residuals.

The spectral energy distributions of active galactic nuclei

ABSTRACT We present spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 41 active galactic nuclei, derived from multiwavelength photometry and archival spectroscopy. All of the SEDs span at least 0.09 to 30 $\mu$m, but in some instances wavelength coverage extends into the X-ray, far-infrared, and radio. For some active galactic nuclei (AGNs) we have fitted the measured far-infrared photometry with greybody models, while radio flux density measurements have been approximated by power laws or polynomials. We have been able to fill some of the gaps in the spectral coverage using interpolation or extrapolation of simple models. In addition to the 41 individual AGN SEDs, we have produced 72 Seyfert SEDs by mixing SEDs of the central regions of Seyferts with galaxy SEDs. Relative to the literature, our templates have broader wavelength coverage and/or higher spectral resolution. We have tested the utility of our SEDs by using them to generate photometric redshifts for 0 &amp;lt; z ≤ 6.12 AGNs in the Boötes field (selected with X-ray, IR, and optical criteria) and, relative to SEDs from the literature, they produce comparable or better photometric redshifts with reduced flux density residuals.

On the UV/Optical Variation in NGC 5548: New Evidence Against the Reprocessing Diagram

Abstract The reprocessing scenario is widely adopted in literature to explain the observed tight inter-band correlation and short lags in the UV/optical variations of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). In this work we look into the color variability of the famous Seyfert galaxy NGC 5548 with high-quality Swift multi-band UV/optical light curves. We find the color variation of NGC 5548 is clearly timescale-dependent, in a way that it is more prominent on shorter timescales. This is similar to that previously detected in quasar samples, but for the first time in an individual AGN. We show that while a reprocessing model with strict assumptions on the driving source and the disk size can apparently match the observed light curves and inter-band lags, it fails to reproduce the observed timescale dependency in the color variation. Such discrepancy raises a severe challenge to, and can hardly be reconciled under the widely accepted reprocessing diagram. It also demonstrates that the timescale dependency of the color variation is uniquely powerful in probing the physics behind AGN UV/optical variations.
