Bio-protection of cementitious materials below ground: The significance of natural soil environments

This study explores the potential impact of natural soil on concrete crack self-healing in sub-surface structures. Three types of pre-cracked cement mortar samples were prepared for laboratory experiments, with some samples inoculated with bacterial healing agents, others supplemented with nutrients to attract indigenous soil bacteria, and plain mortar served as controls. The samples were placed within saturated soil under two conditions: slightly organic natural soil and sterilised soil. After 100 days, crack closure was evaluated through microscopic inspection, water absorption tests, and SEM-EDX scanning. The results indicated calcite precipitation on crack surfaces across all samples, but with varying ratios of crack closure (16%–81%). Notably, most samples incubated in natural soil exhibited an overall increase (up to 59.4%) in healing ratio compared to those in sterilised soil, highlighting the potential of indigenous soil microorganisms and their microbial activity in enhancing the biogenic mineral precipitation and thus protecting sub-surface concrete structures.

Enhancing Anaerobic Biodegradation of Phenanthrene in Polluted Soil by Bioaugmentation and Biostimulation: Focus on the Distribution of Phenanthrene and Microbial Community Analysis

The remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-contaminated soils has received much attention in recent years, and most of the contaminated sites are in anaerobic environments, such as deep soils and flooded soils. We simulated the natural flooded soil environment, selected phenanthrene (PHE) as a model PAH contaminant, and designed batch experiments run for 63 days to comprehensively investigate the effects of the combined addition of anaerobic sludge and granular biochar on microbial community and function and the anaerobic biodegradation of PHE. Firstly, the residue, distribution, and removal of PHE in the flooded soil environment were quantified for each group. Secondly, the effects of bioaugmentation of soil indigenous microorganisms by the addition of anaerobic activated sludge and biostimulation of biochar on the removal of PHE from the soil were analyzed against each other. Lastly, the changes in the structure of the microbial community under the effect of bioaugmentation and biostimulation were illustrated by sequencing analyses. The results of this study showed that the removal efficiency of PHE reached 72.0% after the addition of anaerobic activated sludge. The incorporation of anaerobic activated sludge and biochar resulted in a 25.3% increase in PHE removal compared to a single soil, suggesting that the combination of bioaugmentation and biostimulation can have a synergistic effect on the anaerobic biodegradation of PHE in contaminated soils. The results of sequencing analysis further indicated that the introduction of an exogenous microbial community changed the dominant genera associated with PHE degradation and introduced methanogenic archaea, which enriched the metabolic pathways of the carbon cycle in the system. On this basis, the addition of biochar resulted in higher anaerobic microbial community diversity, functional dominant species were enriched, and the direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) process between electroactive bacteria (Bacteroides, f_Geobacteraceae) and Methanosaeta was facilitated, which accelerated the degradation of PHE by anaerobic microbial communities. The results of this study provide regulatory tools and basic data support for enhanced bioremediation of PAHs in flooded soils.

Biodegradation of atrazine with biochar-mediated functional bacterial biofilm: Construction, characterization and mechanisms

The abuse and residue of herbicides in the black soil area had seriously affected the soil structure, function and crop growth, posing severe threats to agricultural soil environment and public health. Given the limitation of routine microbial remediation, innovative and eco-friendly functional bacterial biofilm which could adapt under adverse conditions was developed on the biochar to investigate its enhanced bioremediation and metabolic characteristics of typical herbicide atrazine. Results revealed that the atrazine degrading strain Acinetobacter lwoffii had competitive advantage in soil indigenous microorganisms and formed dense biofilms on the biochar which was beneficial to cell viability maintenance and aggregations. Metatranscriptomics and RT-qPCR analysis demonstrated that the biochar-mediated biofilm improved the frequency of intercellular communications through quorum sensing and two-component signal regulation systems, and enhanced the atrazine biodegradation efficiency through horizontal gene transfer in co-metabolism mode, providing important scientific basis for the biological remediation of farmland soil non-point source pollution.

Degradation of crude oil and the pure hydrocarbon fractions by indigenous soil microorganisms

Petroleum hydrocarbons are a major concern due to their widespread distribution in the environment, and their harmful effects on humans. The use of biodegradation methods to clean soil that has been contaminated by spilt petroleum can be an effective remediation strategy. Therefore, in this study, the presence of indigenous microorganisms in soil contaminated with crude oil was investigated and their ability to degrade petroleum in vitro was studied. Three methods were used to detect crude oil and pure hydrocarbon degradation by bacterial and fungal isolates. Spectrophotometric method, 2,6-Dichlorophenol indophenol (DCPIP) method and hydrocarbon analysis was performed by GC–MS. Furthermore, PCR was carried out to detect the genes AlkB and PMO in the microbial communities. Seventeen bacterial isolates and 5 fungal isolates were recovered from 19 soil culture samples obtained from three different oil-contaminated sites at Taq-taq (TTOPCO) oil field and from a control site without oil contamination. The bacterial samples were identified culturally and morphologically, and the results were validated by genetic analysis. The results of this study revealed that the indigenous bacterial and fungal isolates had a high capacity to degrade crude oil and pure hydrocarbon fractions. Our results provide insight into the great abilities of Bacillus anthracis, Bacillus cereus, Achromobacter sp., Aspergillus lentulus and Rhizopus arrhizus to degrade crude oil and pure hydrocarbon fractions, and these data are supported by the presence of the PMO and AlkB genes in the isolated microorganisms.

Changes in soil microbial community structure by Allonychiurus kimi (Collembola) and their interactive effects on glyphosate degradation

Collembolans have been known to be involved in various soil ecosystem functions. However, the role of Collembola in organic contaminant degradation has not been sufficiently elucidated to assess its contribution. In this study, varying densities of Allonychiurus kimi (Lee, 1973) (0, 10, and 30 individuals per 30 g of soil) were introduced into glyphosate-contaminated soils (74.1 mg glyphosate kg−1 soil). This study investigated changes in the microbial community and the residual glyphosate concentration in soils over incubation time to elucidate the effects of A. kimi on the glyphosate degradation through its influence on the microbial community. Furthermore, the investigation was conducted in soils collected in May and September 2018 to assess the contribution of A. kimi to glyphosate degradation in soils with varying microbial compositions and biomass. Autoclaved soil was used as a control to minimize the influence of indigenous soil microorganisms on glyphosate degradation. We hypothesize that as the initial density of A. kimi increases, the effects of A. kimi on the soil microbial community become pronounced, altering the degradation kinetics of glyphosate in the soil. The composition and biomass of the soil microorganisms were quantified using the phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) method. Our study determined that the presence of A. kimi altered the microbial community structure by increasing the bacterial and total microbial, but not fungal, biomass. After seven days of treatment, the bacterial and total microbial biomass in the treatment with A. kimi were >2.0-fold and 1.5-fold greater, respectively, compared to those in the treatments without A. kimi. Specifically, the concentration of PLFA 18:1ω7c, i15:0, and 16:1ω7c was positively correlated with A. kimi density. The residual glyphosate concentration decreased exponentially over time as A. kimi density increased. At the end of the experiment, the remaining portions (%) of glyphosate in the May soil samples were 26.3, 20.1, and 6.2, with A. kimi densities of 0, 10, and 30 per vessel, respectively, and the portions in the September soil samples were 13.4, 12.7, and 2.2, respectively. The DT50s (time required for 50 % degradation) decreased significantly with increasing A. kimi density, ranging from 6.8 to 10.1 days at an A. kimi density of 30 to 12.9–19.4 days without A. kimi. However, in the autoclaved soil, a similar effect was not apparent (i.e., DT50s ranged from 23.3 to 27.4 days). Our study demonstrated that Collembola can enhance organic contaminant degradation in soils by altering the microbial community structure.

Low-temperature corn straw-degrading bacterial agent and moisture effects on indigenous microbes

While the in situ return of corn straw can improve soil fertility and farmland ecology, additional bacterial agents are required in low-temperature areas of northern China to accelerate straw degradation. Moisture is an important factor affecting microbial activity; however, owing to a lack of bacterial agents adapted to low-temperature complex soil environments, the effects of soil moisture on the interaction between exogenous bacterial agents and indigenous soil microorganisms remain unclear. To this end, we explored the effect of the compound bacterial agent CFF constructed using Pseudomonas putida and Acinetobacter lwoffii, developed to degrade corn straw in low-temperature soils (15 °C), on indigenous bacterial and fungal communities under dry (10% moisture content), slightly wet (20%), and wet (30%) soil-moisture conditions. The results showed that CFF application significantly affected the α-diversity of bacterial communities and changed both bacterial and fungal community structures, enhancing the correlation between microbial communities and soil-moisture content. CFF application also changed the network structure and the species of key microbial taxa, promoting more linkages among microbial genera. Notably, with an increase in soil moisture, CFF enhanced the rate of corn straw degradation by inducing positive interactions between bacterial and fungal genera and enriching straw degradation-related microbial taxa. Overall, our study demonstrates the alteration of indigenous microbial communities using bacterial agents (CFF) to overcome the limitations of indigenous microorganisms for in situ straw-return agriculture in low-temperature areas.Key points• Low-temperature and variable moisture conditions (10–30%) were compared• Soil microbial network structure and linkages between genera were altered• CFF improves straw degradation via positive interactions between soil microbes

Insights into the effects of hydrogen peroxide and Fenton oxidation on PAHs removal and indigenous microorganisms in a coking-contaminated soil

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are typical persistent organic pollutants in the coking-contaminated soil, however, the effects of chemical oxidation on PAHs removal and the responses of indigenous microorganisms in slurry system has not been studied. In this study, the removal efficiency of PAHs and the responses of indigenous microorganisms treated by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and Fenton oxidation under different liquid-to-solid (L/S) ratio were investigated. The results showed that the highest removal efficiency of Σ PAHs treated by H2O2 oxidation was at the L/S ratio of 4:1. At such condition, the order of PAHs removal efficiency from high to low was 3-ring PAHs (69.7%–99.9%), followed by high ring PAHs (4-6 rings, 54.5%–95.5%), and 2-ring PAHs (38.1%–52.4%). However, Fenton oxidation had insignificantly increased the removal efficiency of PAHs, partly because the high content of metal cations (i.e., Fe2＋ and Mn2+) in coking contaminated soil. The number of soil microorganisms changed slightly during H2O2 and Fenton oxidation treatments (∼10 8 copies/g), while the bacterial diversity increased significantly. Microbial function analysis suggested that the carbohydrate metabolism, xenobiotics biodegradation and metabolism mainly contributed to the degradation of PAHs. Moreover, the function genes and pathways (i.e., amino sugar metabolism and citrate cycle) that involved in PAHs biodegradation increased, which can further promote the biological degradation of PAHs by indigenous microorganisms.

Earthworms synergize with indigenous soil functional microorganisms to accelerate the preferential degradation of the highly toxic S-enantiomer of the fungicide imazalil in soil

The roles of soil and earthworm gut microorganisms in the degradation of the chiral fungicide imazalil (IMA) enantiomers were systemically studied in soil-earthworm systems. S-IMA degraded slower than R-IMA in soil without earthworms. After the addition of earthworms, S-IMA degraded faster than R-IMA. Methylibium was the potential degradative bacterium likely related to the preferential degradation of R-IMA in soil. However, the addition of earthworms significantly decreased the relative abundance of Methylibium, especially in R-IMA-treated soil. Meanwhile, a new potential degradative bacterium Aeromonas first appeared in soil-earthworm systems. Compared with enantiomer-treated soil, the relative abundance of indigenous soil bacterium Kaistobacter significantly boomed in enantiomer-treated soil with earthworms. Interestingly, Kaistobacter in the earthworm gut also obviously increased after exposure to enantiomers, particularly in S-IMA-treated soil, which was associated with the significant increase in Kaistobacter in soil. More importantly, the relative abundances of Aeromonas and Kaistobacter in S-IMA-treated soil were obviously higher than those in R-IMA-treated soil after the addition of earthworms. Moreover, these two potential degradative bacteria were also potential bacterial hosts of the biodegradation genes p450 and bph. Collectively, gut microorganisms are important helpers in soil pollution remediation by participating in the preferential degradation of S-IMA mediated by indigenous soil microorganisms.

Spatial-vertical variations of energetic compounds and microbial community response in soils from an ammunition demolition site in China

Ammunition-related activities have caused severe energetic compound (EC) contamination and pose serious risks to ecosystems. However, little is known regarding the spatial-vertical variations of ECs or their migration in soils at ammunition demolition sites. Although the toxic effect of some ECs to microorganisms have been reported through laboratory simulations, the responses of indigenous microbial communities to ammunition demolition activities are unclear. In this study, the spatial-vertical variations of ECs in 117 topsoil samples and three soil profiles from a typical ammunition demolition site in China were studied. Heavy contamination of ECs was concentrated in the top soils of the work platforms, and ECs were also detected in the surrounding area and nearby farmland. ECs showed different migration characteristics in the 0–100 cm soil layer of the different soil profiles. Demolition activities and surface runoff play critical roles in the spatial-vertical variations and migration of ECs. These findings suggest that ECs are able to migrate from the topsoil to the subsoil and from the core demolition area to further ecosystems. The work platforms exhibited lower microbial diversity and different microbiota compositions compared to the surrounding areas and farmlands. Using the random forest analysis, pH and 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene (TNB) were characterized as the most important factors affecting microbial diversity. Network analysis revealed that Desulfosporosinus was highly sensitive to ECs and may be a unique indicator of EC contamination. These findings provide key information in understanding EC migration characteristics in soils and the potential threats to indigenous soil microorganisms in ammunition demolition sites.

Analysis of the Degradation of OCPs Contaminated Soil by the BC/nZVI Combined with Indigenous Microorganisms.

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were typical persistent organic pollutants that posed great hazards and high risks in soil. In this study, a peanut shell biochar-loaded nano zero-valent iron (BC/nZVI) material was prepared in combination with soil indigenous microorganisms to enhance the degradation of α-hexachlorocyclohexane(α-HCH) and γ-hexachlorocyclohexane(γ-HCH) in water and soil. The effects of BC/nZVI on indigenous microorganisms in soil were investigated based on the changes in redox potential and dehydrogenase activity in the soil. The results showed as follows: (1) The specific surface area of peanut shell biochar loaded with nano-zero-valent iron was large, and the nano-zero-valent iron particles were evenly distributed on the peanut shell biochar; (2) peanut shell BC/nZVI had a good degradation effect on α-HCH and γ-HCH in water, with degradation rates of 64.18% for α-HCH and 91.87% for γ-HCH in 24 h; (3) peanut shell BC/nZVI also had a good degradation effect on α-HCH and γ-HCH in soil, and the degradation rates of α-HCH and γ-HCH in the 1% BC/nZVI reached 55.2% and 85.4%, second only to 1% zero-valent iron. The degradation rate was the fastest from 0 to 7 days, while the soil oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) increased sharply. (4) The addition of BC/nZVI to the soil resulted in a significant increase in dehydrogenase activity, which further promoted the degradation of HCHs; the amount of HCHs degradation was significantly negatively correlated with dehydrogenase activity. This study provides a remediation strategy for HCH-contaminated sites, reducing the human health risk of HCHs in the soil while helping to improve the soil and increase the activity of soil microorganisms.

Biodegradation of Carbofuran and Paraquat by Indigenous Soil Microorganisms

Aim: It aimed at the biodegradation of Carbofuran and Paraquat using the active microbial population resident in a farmyard soil in the Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE), Ugbomoro Community, Delta State.
 Study Design: Microcosms were set-up in triplicates; sampling for pesticides’ loss and microbial counts were done bi-weekly. 
 Place and Duration of Study: Study was done in Environmental Management and Toxicology Department, FUPRE and Chemistry Department, University of Benin between June 2019 and July 2019.
 Methodology: Carbofuran and Paraquat were applied to farmyard soil containing active microbial population at recommended and four times the recommended doses. A sterile control was equally setup. Biodegradation was monitored with the High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Microbial counts were monitored using standard methods.
 Results: Carbofuran decreased from 108.6 ± 0.69 μg/kg (day 0) to 39.2 ± 3.8 μg/kg (day 28) and 301.4 ± 1.29 μg/kg (day 0) to 241.4 ± 2.83 μg/kg (day 28) for recommended and four times recommended rates, respectively. Also, there were complete removal of Paraquat in treatments with the recommended rate while it decreased from 268.3 ± 5.21μg/kg (day 0) to 144.4 ± 2.38 μg/kg (day 28) at four times the recommended rate. In the abiotic control, were little losses of both pesticides. Total heterotrophic bacterial, fungal and actinomycetes counts increased (day 14 to 21) in contaminated soils. Significant differences in degradation with respect to pesticides treatment and time were observed.
 Conclusion: The microorganisms grew at different concentrations reducing both Carbofuran and Paraquat in contaminated soils. Their presence and high numbers confirmed that they are ubiquitous, diverse and can adjust to any harsh environment. Increased microbial counts showed that they grew in presence of the chemicals and degraded them. Thus, these indigenous microbial population can be used for the clean-up of these pesticides pollution in farms to improve such environment.

Natural formation of copper sulfide nanoparticles via microbially mediated organic sulfur mineralization in soil: Processes and mechanisms

Sulfur cycling is known to control the speciation and bioavailability of copper in the environment via inorganic sulfur oxidation and reduction. However, it remains unclear how the mineralization of organic sulfur and associated microbial processes affect Cu transformations. This study discovered a neglected mechanism that mediates Cu mobility and speciation via cysteine mineralization in a paddy soil. We provide evidence for a pathway of sulfide production from cysteine via indigenous soil microorganisms. The produced sulfide promotes the formation of copper sulfide nanoparticles, constituting an alternative copper sulfide formation mechanism that bypasses sulfate reduction. A bacterium isolated from the soil, named Bacillus sp. TR1, played a role in forming cell-associated copper sulfide nanoparticles. A metagenomics approach was applied to detect genes related to cysteine mineralization (dcyD, CTH, CBS, and sseA) and the associated microbes in the soil. The sseA gene was most abundant, and the microorganisms involved in cysteine mineralization were taxonomically diverse, including members of phyla Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Thaumarchaeota. Geobacter, Sulfuriferula, Nitrososphaera, Noviherbaspirillum, and Clostridium were the dominant genera with potential to metabolize cysteine to form copper sulfide nanoparticles. Our study not only provides initial molecular-level insights into the abundance, diversity, and metabolism of cysteine-mineralizing microorganisms but also highlights their important ecological functions in metal and sulfur biogeochemical cycles.

Electron transfer by ion conductance in a soil bioelectric field

The efficacy of electron transfer determines the performance of soil microbial electrochemical systems (MESs). Ion conductance is an important endogenous route of electron transfer for the soil, yet its efficacy is unclear. Under the bioelectric field force generated in situ by indigenous soil microorganisms, dominant cations (Na+ and Mg2+) and anions (Cl− and SO42−) were all transported to the cathode in soil MESs. Furthermore, the same valence state of ions exhibited different and even opposite effects on ion conductance according to the work done by the bioelectric field force over time, e.g., Na+ and K+. Based on charges carried by migrated ions, we demonstrated that ion conductance was the main route of electron transfer in a soil MES, even for treatments with conductive magnetite and haematite. In contrast, electron shuttles contributed predominantly to electron transfer in ferrihydrite treatment. This was also supported by the characteristics of the charge transfer resistance and ohmic resistance according to the redundancy analysis with interpretation degrees of 93.96–94.25 %. Overall, this study provides profound insight into electron transfer by ion conductance in soil bioelectrochemical technology.

A review on biosurfactant producing bacteria for remediation of petroleum contaminated soils.

The discharge of potentially toxic petroleum hydrocarbons into the environment has been a matter of concern, as these organic pollutants accumulate in many ecosystems due to their hydrophobicity and low bioavailability. Petroleum hydrocarbons are neurotoxic and carcinogenic organic pollutants, extremely harmful to human and environmental health. Traditional treatment methods for removing hydrocarbons from polluted areas, including various mechanical and chemical strategies, are ineffective and costly. However, many indigenous microorganisms in soil and water can utilise hydrocarbon compounds as sources of carbon and energy and hence, can be employed to degrade hydrocarbon contaminants. Therefore, bioremediation using bacteria that degrade petroleum hydrocarbons is commonly viewed as an environmentally acceptable and effective method. The efficacy of bioremediation can be boosted further by using potential biosurfactant-producing microorganisms, as biosurfactants reduce surface tension, promote emulsification and micelle formation, making hydrocarbons bio-available for microbial breakdown. Further, introducing nanoparticles can improve the solubility of hydrophobic hydrocarbons as well as microbial synthesis of biosurfactants, hence establishing a favourable environment for microbial breakdown of these chemicals. The review provides insights into the role of microbes in the bioremediation of soils contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons and emphasises the significance of biosurfactants and potential biosurfactant-producing bacteria. The review partly focusses on how nanotechnology is being employed in different critical bioremediation processes.

Effects of Comamonas testosteroni on dissipation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and the response of endogenous bacteria for soil bioremediation.

Bioremediation is a promising method of treating polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in contaminated soil; however, the understanding of the efficiency and the way of microbial inoculants work in complex soil environments is limited. Comamonas testosteroni (Ct) strains could efficiently degrade PAHs, especially naphthalene (Nap) and phenanthrene (Phe). This study aimed to explore the functional role of Ct in soil indigenous microorganisms and analyze the effect of Ct addition on PAHs concentration in PAH-contaminated soil. The results showed that inoculation with Ct degraded naphthalene (Nap), phenanthrene (Phe), and benzo [α] pyrene (BaP) significantly; the degradation rates were 63.38%, 81.18%, and 37.98% on day 25, respectively, suggesting that the low molecular weights of Nap and Phe were more easily degraded by microorganisms than those of BaP. We speculated that BaP and Phe might be converted into Nap for further degradation, which is the main reason for the low degradation rate of Nap detected after 10-25days. Network analysis showed that inoculation with Ct significantly increased bacteria community abundance closely related to PAHs. Structural equation models confirmed that Steroidobacter, as functional bacteria, could affect the degradation of Nap and BaP. Inoculated Ct effectively enhanced the synergy among indigenous bacteria to degrade PAHs. This finding will help understand the function of inoculated Ct strains in PAH-contaminated soil at the laboratory level.

Indigenous Microorganisms Offset Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi-Induced Plant Growth and Nutrient Acquisition Through Negatively Modulating the Genes of Phosphorus Transport and Nitrogen Assimilation.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi that promote plant growth and nutrient acquisition are essential for nutrient-deficient karst areas, while they inevitably regulate host plants jointly with indigenous microorganisms in natural soil. However, how indigenous microorganisms regulate AM-induced benefits on plant growth and nutrient acquisition remains unclear. In this study, the Bidens tripartita as the common plant species in the karst region was cultivated into three soil substrates treated by AM fungi inoculation (AMF), AM fungi inoculation combining with indigenous microorganisms (AMI), and the control without AM fungi and indigenous microorganisms (CK). The plant biomass and concentration of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) were measured, and the transcriptomic analysis was carried out using root tissues. The results showed that AM fungi significantly enhanced the plant biomass, N, and P accumulation with the reduction of plants’ N/P ratio; however, the indigenous microorganisms offset the AM-induced benefits in biomass and N and P acquisition. In addition, there are 819 genes in differentially expressed genes (DEGs) of AMF vs. AMI ∩ AMF vs. CK, meaning that AM fungi induced these genes that were simultaneously regulated by indigenous microorganisms. Furthermore, the enrichment analysis suggested that these genes were significantly associated with the metabolic processes of organophosphate, P, sulfur, N, and arginine biosynthesis. Notably, 34 and 17 genes of DEGs were related to P and N metabolism, respectively. Moreover, the indigenous microorganisms significantly downregulated these DEGs, especially those encoding the PHO1 P transporters and the glnA, glutamate dehydrogenase 2 (GDH2), and urease as key enzymes in N assimilation; however, the indigenous microorganisms significantly upregulated genes encoding PHO84 inducing cellular response to phosphate (Pi) starvation. These regulations indicated that indigenous microorganisms restrained the N and P metabolism induced by AM fungi. In conclusion, we suggested that indigenous microorganisms offset nutrient benefits of AM fungi for host plants through regulating these genes related to P transport and N assimilation.

Soil indigenous microorganisms alleviate soluble vanadium release from industrial dusts

Vanadium-bearing dusts from industrial processes release abundant toxic vanadium, posing imminent ecological and human health concerns. Although the precipitation of these dusts has been recognized as the main source of soil vanadium pollution, little is known regarding the interrelationships between industrial dusts and soil inherent compositions. In this study, the interactions between dusts from vanadium smelting and soil indigenous microorganisms were investigated. Soluble vanadium (V) [V(V)] released from industrial dusts was reduced by 41.5 ± 0.39% with soil addition, compared to water leaching. Reducible fraction accounted for the highest proportion (55.1 ± 1.73%) of vanadium speciation in the resultant soils, while residual vanadium fraction increased to 83.7 ± 3.22% in the leached dusts. Functional genera (e.g., Aliihoeflea, Actinotalea) that transformed V(V) to insoluble vanadium (IV) alleviated dissolved vanadium release. Nitrate/nitrite reduction and glutathione metabolisms contributed to V(V) immobilization primarily. Structural equation model analysis indicated that V(V) reducers had significant negative impacts on soluble V(V) in the leachate. This first-attempt study highlights the importance of soil microorganisms in immobilizing vanadium from industrial dusts, which is helpful to develop novel strategies to reduce their environmental risks associated to vanadium smelting process.

Evaluation of Disease Suppressiveness of Soils in Croplands by Co-Cultivation of Pathogenic Fusarium oxysporum and Indigenous Soil Microorganisms.

An evaluation of suppressiveness against soil-borne diseases is important for their control. We herein assessed disease suppression against F. oxysporum f. sp. spinaciae using the Fusarium co-cultivation method in 75 soils collected from croplands around the country. The suppressive effects of soil microbes against F. oxysporum growth were examined by simultaneously culturing soil suspensions and F. oxysporum f. sp. spinaciae on a culture medium. The growth degree of F. oxysporum on the medium varied among the 75 soils tested, and 14 soils showing different degrees of growth were selected to investigate the incidence of spinach wilt by cultivating spinach inoculated with the pathogenic F. oxysporum strain. A correlation (r=0.831, P<0.001) was observed between the disease incidence of spinach wilt and the growth degree of F. oxysporum using the co-cultivation method in the 14 selected soils. No correlations were noted between chemical and biological parameters (including pH and the population density of microbes, except for the growth degree of F. oxysporum) and the growth degree of F. oxysporum and incidence of spinach wilt, indicating that it was not possible to predict the degree of growth or disease incidence based on specific chemical and biological characteristics or their combination. The present results suggest that an evaluation of the growth degree of F. oxysporum by the Fusarium co-cultivation will be useful for diagnosing the disease suppressiveness of soil against pathogenic F. oxysporum in croplands.

Cd diminution through microbial mediated degraded lignocellulose maize straw: Batch adsorption and bioavailability trails

Lignocellulose degraded maize straw (LMS) was prepared with the interaction of soil-indigenous microorganisms and further deployed to attenuate the Cd contamination in polluted soil. The Lignocellulose degrading ratio was determined and results revealed the significant degradation of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin by 33.03, 26.7 and 15.97% respectively as compared to pristine maize straw (PS). Moreover, LMS was also categorized through FE-SEM, FTIR, BET analysis, elemental analysis and XPS technique and the analytical results indicated that lignocellulose structure in maize straw was successfully degraded and was involved in metal-ion complexation. Batch sorption trials revealed that Cd2+ sorption onto LMS was explained well by Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The LMS showed maximum adsorption capacities (9.84 mg g−1) for Cd2+ as compared to PS (3.30 mg g−1). Moreover, the soil incubation trials (60 days) depicted the availability of Cd decreased by 11.03 and 34.7% with PS and LMS application respectively. The addition of LMS significantly decreased the exchangeable fractions of Cd and ensued an increase in organic matter and Fe–Mn oxides bound fractions. This work clarified the LMS as a promising amendment for effective remediation of Cd-contaminated matrices.

Advances in the bioaugmentation-assisted remediation of petroleum contaminated soil

Bioremediation is considered as a cost-effective, efficient and free-of-secondary-pollution technology for petroleum pollution remediation. Due to the limitation of soil environmental conditions and the nature of petroleum pollutants, the insufficient number and the low growth rate of indigenous petroleum-degrading microorganisms in soil lead to long remediation cycle and poor remediation efficiency. Bioaugmentation can effectively improve the biodegradation efficiency. By supplying functional microbes or microbial consortia, immobilized microbes, surfactants and growth substrates, the remediation effect of indigenous microorganisms on petroleum pollutants in soil can be boosted. This article summarizes the reported petroleum-degrading microbes and the main factors influencing microbial remediation of petroleum contaminated soil. Moreover, this article discusses a variety of effective strategies to enhance the bioremediation efficiency, as well as future directions of bioaugmentation strategies.
