Capturing Successful Aging in Daily Life: Exploring the Intensive Longitudinal Findings from a US National Sample.

Thus far, successful aging has been conceptualized and operationalized as a relatively static construct. Investigating daily successful aging provides a dynamic approach highlighting how successful aging can be achieved through everyday actions, giving older adults a stronger sense of control over their lives. We used 8-day diary data from MIDUS 2's US national sample of older adults (N=716, Mage[SD]=68.80[6.45]). Participants reported daily physical symptoms, functioning, and engagement in life (collectively, successful aging indicators), alongside daily stressors and positive events. We also correlated personal mean and standard deviation of the indicators with one-time measures of health and well-being. Intra-class correlation revealed substantial within-person variability in successful aging indicators. These indicators were associated with daily stressors and positive events. One-time health and well-being indicators were positively associated with personal mean levels of successful aging, although their correlations with personal standard deviations were less consistent. Intra-individual variations in successful aging as everyday symptoms, functioning, and engagement with life are observable among a national sample of older adults, challenging the static view of successful aging and, instead, emphasizing the need to understand "micro-level" contributors of successful aging.

Subjective healthy aging indicators in a the Mediterranean and Latin American context. A comparison by gender and age in older adults of lifelong educational programs

ABSTRACT The aim of this research is to compare a series of subjective indicators of healthy aging. We analyzed two samples of people 60 years or older enrolled in university courses in two public universities, the National University (Costa Rica, N = 206) and the University of Valencia (Spain, N = 857). The subjective indicators of successful aging analyzed were social support (social network and functional social support), perceived health, spirituality, and subjective well-being (life satisfaction and psychological well-being), all variables conditioned by country, age, and gender. Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) or Multivariate Analysis of Covariance (MANCOVA) was estimated, depending on the number of dependent variables analyzed. Overall, relatively high subjective indicators of healthy aging have been achieved in both samples. We found group differences in both samples by comparing age and gender, but not by country in these healthy aging indicators, suggesting invariant comparison evidence in both cultures compared. This study found that the subjective successful aging indicators analyzed in both cultures were similar. These findings are discussed within the cross-cultural emphasis and successful aging models.

Successful Aging Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults in Rural Areas of Jember District

Background: Successful aging is a condition when the elderly not only live long but remain in good health so that they can be independent, and useful. Purpose: This study aims to determine the description of successful aging in the elderly at Karang Werda, Rambipuji District, Jember Regency. Methods: This study used a descriptive observational design with a cross-sectional approach and involved 213 elderly people selected by total sampling. The research instrument used the Successful Aging Scale (SAS). Data analysis used descriptive statistical tests and a chi-square test in crosstab analysis to analyze the characteristics of respondents with successful aging. Results: The success rate of aging in the elderly was mostly high. The highest indicators of successful aging were primary and secondary control, while the lowest were selection optimization and compensation. Analysis showed associations between the characteristics of age, gender, education, and smoking habits with successful aging (p-value < 0.05), while marital status, medical history, living status, employment, and income were not associated (p-value > 0.05). Conclusion: The majority of the elderly in Karang Werda, Rambipuji District, Jember Regency, showed a high level of successful aging.

The concept of successful ageing in wartime: A review of Western scientific sources

Preserving the full life of an elderly person as the most vulnerable category of the population in times of armed conflict raises many methodological, theoretical, and practical issues for scholars. The article is an attempt at a problematic and reflective analysis of the heuristic nature of the concept of successful ageing for the study of ageing of elderly Ukrainians in the context of the war with Russia. The paper presents a problem-oriented review of contemporary Western literature on successful ageing. In addition to the basic empirical and theoretical works, a significant part of the theoretical analysis is based on the results of the most significant meta-analytical studies on this topic. The methodology of problem-oriented and integrative analysis was used to determine which problem areas of the concept of successful ageing can contribute to its study in wartime. The potential and limitations of the modern concept of successful ageing are considered. Eight problem areas of this concept are presented, which reveal certain contradictions, debatable issues, and gaps, which are simultaneously directions for the development of both the concept itself and its research in the context of war. Among them: vagueness of the criteria for successful ageing and its dilution with similar concepts; interaction of biomedical and psychosocial contexts of successful ageing; limits of responsibility for the success of ageing in the context of the “person – society” dichotomy; socio-structural inequalities between older people and the inability to age equally “successfully”; discrepancies between subjective and objective indicators of successful ageing; dominance of the Western model of successful ageing and levelling of its cultural specificity; integration of individual, social and scientific conceptualization of successful ageing. The author analyses the most promising theoretical and methodological concepts and theories of successful ageing that are most relevant to the problem of ageing in war. The literature review presented in the article will help to draw attention to the problem of improving and preserving the full life of an elderly person in the context of armed conflict. The results of the research will be useful to scholars and practitioners for the further development of programmes to protect the mental and physical health of older people in war

Determinants and indicators of successful aging as a multidimensional outcome: a systematic review of longitudinal studies.

Successful aging (SA) has been coined as a term to describe the multidimensional aspects associated with achieving optimal combination of physical and mental health along with social well-being health, mental and social well-being at older age. In recent years there has been an increased interest in understanding the role of determinants of SA, such as demographic, biological, behavioral, psychological and social factors. To synthesize the recent evidence, we conducted a systematic review of longitudinal studies on a range of determinants and indicators of SA defined as a multidimensional outcome. A systematic search of PubMed, MEDLINE and Web of Science for finding eligible papers published between August 2016 and June 2023 was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. The review protocol was registered in PROSPERO International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (Registration number: CRD42021250200). The web-based automated screening tool-Rayyan-was used for title and abstract screening. The study quality was assessed using the Quality in Prognosis Studies (QUIPS) tool. A total of 3,191 records were initially identified using the predefined search strategy. Out of 289 articles selected for full text screening, 22 were found eligible and included in the review. A variety of factors have been explored in relation to SA, ranging from socio-demographic factors, nutrition, lifestyle, biological pathways, psychological health, and well-being. Overall, the results of recent studies have confirmed the role of metabolic health, adherence to healthy dietary patterns, such as the Mediterranean diet, physical activity, non-smoking, and higher socio-economic status as main factors associated with higher odds for SA. Emerging research highlights the role of psycho-social factors and early life health as determinants of SA. In summary, this review highlights the importance of healthy living and monitoring metabolic risk along with sustaining psychological well-being in adult life as major determinants of SA. Multiple Roads to Success: A Latent Class Analysis on Successful Ageing Among Hong Kong Near-Centenarians and Centenarians (NCC).

Notwithstanding the oldest-old cohort being the fastest-growing population in most ageing societies, characterizing successful ageing in adults of advanced age, such as nonagenarians and centenarians, remains challenging. This study investigated the successful ageing subphenotypes using the data from Hong Kong Centenarian Study 2. Between April 2021 and September 2022, 146 family caregivers of community-dwelling older adults aged 95 or above were interviewed by phone. Latent class analysis identified three classes-Overall Frail (46.6%) with poor mobility, cognitive and functional health, Nonambulant (37.0%) but good functional health, and Robust (16.4%) with overall good health-from 11 indicators based on caregivers' reports. Although we found a low prevalence of fulfillment of all indicators of successful ageing, our findings will help care professionals appreciate the heterogeneity underlying partial successful ageing in this vulnerable cohort for segmented and targeted healthy longevity interventions.

Psihosocijalne determinante objektivnih i subjektivnih pokazatelja uspješnoga starenja

Research into possible determinants of successful ageing is continuously growing, due to the increase in the proportion of old people in the general population, as well as the important practical implications that it has. However, the role of various psychosocial factors in the process of successful ageing is still not sufficiently clarified. The main goal of this study was to examine the contribution of a group of psychosocial factors (optimism, resilience, generativity, adaptation to the ageing process, social support and the frequency of social contacts) to successful ageing. The twofactor model of Pruchno et al. (2010) was used to measure the concept of successful ageing. The model includes the subjective and objective components of successful ageing. The research data were collected on a sample of 790 elderly and old men and women aged between 65 and 98 years. The results of hierarchical regression analyses have shown that the best predictors of subjective and objective indicators of successful ageing were age and psychological traits and resources (optimism, resilience, and good adaptation to changes in the ageing process). The applied value of these results can be found in the identification of factors that contribute to successful ageing and the quality of life of older people.

Effects of Health-Related Behaviors and Changes on Successful Aging among Indonesian Older People.

Whether changes in health behaviors can improve successful aging has not been well explored. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of health-related behaviors and changes on successful aging in Indonesian older adults. Data were from the fourth and fifth waves of the Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS), the participants were aged 60 years and older and who completed both waves (n = 1289). Successful aging indicators were defined as no chronic diseases, no physical function difficulties, no depressive symptoms, intact cognitive function, with social support, and with social participation. Health-related behaviors focused on smoking, physical activities, and protein intake. A logistic regression analysis was conducted. The overall successful aging rate in 2007 was 23.6%, and it had decreased to 5.6% by 2014. There were gender differences in smoking, physical activities, and behavioral changes, including promoting increased physical activity, no smoking/smoking cessation, and adequate protein intake by older adults. Quitting smoking, performing medium physical activity, and increasing protein intake were protective factors for successful aging, but the effects of behavioral changes differed by gender. Health-related behaviors and changes may impact successful aging among older adults. A healthy lifestyle is suggested to be adopted as early as possible in one’s life course.

The Efficacy of a Community-based Intervention in Bangladesh for Enhancing Successful Ageing Indicators

Purpose: The aims of this research was to see whether a community-based intervention could be effective in promoting comprehensive indicators for successful aging. Methods: The participants (60 years old and above) were recruited from rural and urban parts of Bangladesh's Rangpur district for this seven-month intervention program. Successful aging indicators included blood pressure control or diabetes management, adherence to recommended physical exercise and diet, cognitive impairment, depressive symptoms, engagement in social activities, religious activities, and volunteer activities. Results: In the follow-up period the likelihood to control hypertension and diabetes in comparison to the baseline were 1.64 (95 % confidence interval [CI] = 1.12- 3.38) and 1.89 (95 % CI = 1.44- 2.87) times higher. Participants in the follow-up were 2.21 (95 % CI = 1.87–3.45), 2.01 (95 % CI = 1.61–2.99) times more likely to adherence to recommended physical activity and diet compared with the baseline. This intervention was shown to be significantly linked to lower likelihood of developing cognitive impairment and depressive symptoms. In the follow-up period group activities increased 98% as compared to baseline. Novelty/Value: This community-based intervention was found to be helpful in boosting successful aging markers for chronic disease management, maintaining good mental and physical function, and maintaining life engagement. The effect of leisure activities on successful aging.

The world population is aging with the prolongation of the expected life expectancy. With the increase in the elderly population in the World, successful aging and leisure activities gained importance. Leisure activities contribute to successful aging by supporting an active lifestyle. This study was designed to examine the relationship between older adults' participation in leisure activities and successful aging indicators such as life satisfaction, happiness, mental well-being, depression, anxiety, and stress. The sample of this one-group and pre-post experimental study consisted of 28 older adults. The data were collected using the Descriptive Information Form for the Older Adults, The Happiness, Depression-Anxiety-Stress, Satisfaction with Life, and Mental Well-being Scales. The older adults participated in activities such as bead stringing, rope tying, socks matching, rope knitting, chess, and checkers, according to their preferences, for 30-45 min daily for 7 weeks. The Happiness Scale scores statistically significantly increased to 24.39 ± 5.15 (P = 0.027 <0.05) at post-test after the activity. Similarly, Life Satisfaction Scale scores increased significantly to 16.54 ± 3.49 after the activity (P = 0.001 <0.05). There was a statistically significant decrease in Depression and Stress Scale scores (depression P = 0.035 <0.05; stress P = 0.011 < 0.05); however, a statistically insignificant increase was seen in anxiety scores (P = 0.758 >0.05). A statistically insignificant increase was also found in the Mental Well-Being Scale post-test score (P = 0.103 >0.05). Although leisure activities, effective in successful aging, have a significant effect on the happiness, life satisfaction, depression, and stress levels of older adults, they have no significant effect on the levels of anxiety and mental well-being. To maintain the positive effects of leisure activities, which are effective on success and aging in older adults, these activities can be included in the programs of institutions where people of this age group live.

Can the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) Help Explain Subjective Well-Being in Senior Citizens due to Gateball Participation?

Promoting successful aging strategies through well-reasoned caregiving programs is, and should be, one of the main objectives of many government policies and their implementing agencies. Well-being has been considered an important indicator of successful aging. Leisure is a key life domain and a core ingredient for overall well-being. Yet, within well-being research, few studies have made the connection between leisure participation as accepted behavior and subjective well-being in senior citizens. This study proposed to examine the applicability of the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) in explaining senior citizens’ decision-making processes in terms of leisure participation behavior and the effect of such behavioral engagement on subjective well-being. The respondents were senior citizens in Taiwan who played gateball and were aged 60 years or older. A total of 595 usable responses were obtained and used to answer the research question. The empirical results indicate that performance expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions are positively and significantly related to senior citizens’ gateball participation behavior. In addition, gateball participation behavior had a positive and significant effect on respondents’ subjective well-being. The results of this study not only extend the application of UTAUT in terms of participation behavior in leisure activities, but also can provide gateball associations and government entities a theoretical model for developing and promoting gateball programs which serve or involve the elderly, as well as helping older adults to pursue satisfactory levels of wellbeing.

Association of quality of life with structural, functional and molecular brain imaging in community-dwelling older adults

BackgroundAs the population ages, maintaining mental health and well-being of older adults is a public health priority. Beyond objective measures of health, self-perceived quality of life (QoL) is a good indicator of successful aging. In older adults, it has been shown that QoL is related to structural brain changes. However, QoL is a multi-faceted concept and little is known about the specific relationship of each QoL domain to brain structure, nor about the links with other aspects of brain integrity, including white matter microstructure, brain perfusion and amyloid deposition, which are particularly relevant in aging. Therefore, we aimed to better characterize the brain biomarkers associated with each QoL domain using a comprehensive multimodal neuroimaging approach in older adults. MethodsOne hundred and thirty-five cognitively unimpaired older adults (mean age ± SD: 69.4 ± 3.8 y) underwent structural and diffusion magnetic resonance imaging, together with early and late florbetapir positron emission tomography scans. QoL was assessed using the brief version of the World Health Organization's QoL instrument, which allows measuring four distinct domains of QoL: self-perceived physical health, psychological health, social relationships and environment. Multiple regression analyses were carried out to identify the independent global neuroimaging predictor(s) of each QoL domain, and voxel-wise analyses were then conducted with the significant predictor(s) to highlight the brain regions involved. Age, sex, education and the other QoL domains were entered as covariates in these analyses. Finally, forward stepwise multiple regressions were conducted to determine the specific items of the relevant QoL domain(s) that contributed the most to these brain associations. ResultsOnly physical health QoL was associated with global neuroimaging values, specifically gray matter volume and white matter mean kurtosis, with higher physical health QoL being associated with greater brain integrity. These relationships were still significant after correction for objective physical health and physical activity measures. No association was found with global brain perfusion or global amyloid deposition. Voxel-wise analyses revealed that the relationships with physical health QoL concerned the anterior insula and ventrolateral prefrontal cortex, and the corpus callosum, corona radiata, inferior frontal white matter and cingulum. Self-perceived daily living activities and self-perceived pain and discomfort were the items that contributed the most to these associations with gray matter volume and white matter mean kurtosis, respectively. ConclusionsBetter self-perceived physical health, encompassing daily living activities and pain and discomfort, was the only QoL domain related to brain structural integrity including higher global gray matter volume and global white matter microstructural integrity in cognitively unimpaired older adults. The relationships involved brain structures belonging to the salience network, the pain pathway and the empathy network. While previous studies showed a link between objective measures of physical health, our findings specifically highlight the relevance of monitoring and promoting self-perceived physical health in the older population. Longitudinal studies are needed to assess the direction and causality of the relationships between QoL and brain integrity.

Momentary Successful Aging Indicators and Their Short-Term and Long-Term Covariates

Studies on successful aging have conceptualized it as a between-person construct, meaning that people’s aging process is seen as more or less successful than others’ across contexts. This study examines within-person, moment-to-moment successful aging indicators, such as (absence of) physical pain, good physical and cognitive functioning, and active engagement in social and productive activities, and their relations to one-time well-being indicators (affective balance, psychological needs satisfaction, meaning in life, and satisfaction with life) at the time and one year after. Multilevel modeling on experience sampling data revealed that successful aging varied substantially (over 50% total variances) within-person and was positively associated with well-being. This study illustrates the utility of momentary successful aging indicators and advocates for a more nuanced understanding besides a simple classification of older adults undergoing “successful” or “normal” aging processes.

Prosocial Behavior and Contributors to Older Adults’ Well-Being in Daily Life

This symposium reports findings from a national experience-sampling study of 165 older adults (mean age=71, range=60-88 years) who are heavily involved in prosocial activity, contributing to their communities as leaders or high-commitment volunteers in social-purpose organizations. Gerontological research has linked prosocial activity to a set of positive outcomes for the older adults who engage in it (e.g., better health and reduced mortality), including global measures of well-being such as life satisfaction. However, little is known about the contributors to these individuals’ momentary well-being. Four presentations address this gap in knowledge. In the first presentation, Dwight Tse revisits the concept of successful aging as a within-person variable with day-to-day variations. Experience sampling data revealed great variations in successful aging indicators, and successful aging was associated with better well-being as hypothesized. In the second presentation, Ajit Mann extends beyond general control beliefs and explores the diversity in distribution of control beliefs across various daily activities (e.g., active leisure, prosocial activity, socializing, etc.), in addition to investigating the relationship between later life control diversity and subjective well-being. In the third presentation, Kelsey Finley explores Aristotle’s concept of the golden mean (an ideal state between deficiency and excess) for the number of hours spent in prosocial work on momentary well-being outcomes. In the fourth presentation, Jeanne Nakamura examines the relationship between global meaning in life and meaningful engagement in the moment, illuminating variation in this relationship through a comparison of the prosocial leaders and high-commitment volunteers.

Associations of self-reported vision problems with health and psychosocial functioning: A 9-year longitudinal perspective

Impaired vision often results in restrictions across diverse key indicators of successful aging. However, little is known about how impaired vision affects the long-term trajectories of these outcomes, whether effects are moderated by age, and whether psychosocial resources beyond well-being such as subjective age views are also affected by vision loss. We analyzed how self-reported vision problems as a time-varying predictor are related to long-term changes in health and cognitive ability (functional health, number of chronic diseases, self-rated health, information processing speed), well-being (life satisfaction, positive and negative affect, depressive symptoms, loneliness), and subjective age views (subjective age; aging-related cognitions: social loss, physical decline, continuous growth). Our sample was derived from the German Ageing Survey, comprising 6,378 individuals (40–89 years) who provided up to four observations over a 9-year period. Controlling for gender, age, education, and functional as well as self-rated health, we observed that both on a between- and a within-person level, indicators of successful aging were consistently less favorable among individuals with more vision problems. Associations between vision problems and functional health became stronger with advancing age. In contrast, with increasing age, vision problems were less closely associated with change in several indicators of psychosocial functioning. Our findings suggest that self-reported visual impairment is associated with restrictions across a broad range of developmental domains. Some detrimental effects of vision problems are augmented in later life, whereas several effects on well-being and subjective age views were attenuated with advancing age, which might indicate processes of late-life adaptation to vision loss.

A Mixed-Method Study on Strategies in Everyday Personal Goals among Community-Dwelling Older Adults

Introduction: Although it is well known that preference for selection, optimization, and compensation (SOC) strategies is associated with indicators of successful aging and well-being, very little is known about what predicts the use of SOC as goal management strategies in the daily lives of older adults. The present study investigates predictors of self-reported use of SOC strategies in community-dwelling adults. We expected selection and especially compensation to be higher in individuals with worse subjective health and cognitive performance. On the contrary, given that optimization is an anticipatory strategy to increase goal-relevant means in the absence of resource losses, we did not expect optimization to be related to either health or cognition. Methods: We performed hierarchical regression to predict use of SOC strategies to achieve everyday personal goals (assessed qualitatively via semi-structured interviews exploring participants’ personal goals) from subjective health and objective cognitive performance, controlling for age, apathy, and depression. Results: Poorer self-rated health and worse cognitive performance positively predicted compensation as a goal management strategy (R² = 20%), whereas self-rated health just failed to significantly predict selection rates. None of the variables of interest predicted optimization. Discussion/Conclusion: Whereas previous research suggests associations between reduced resources and decreased absolute frequency of compensation use, the present study found that poorer cognitive status and perceived health are both linked to increased reliance on compensation in order to preserve well-being. In line with their anticipatory nature, the use of optimization strategies was independent from health and cognitive resources in our sample. We discuss the absence of conclusive effects regarding selection in this study in light of the distinction between elective and loss-based selection.

Determinants and indicators of successful ageing associated with mortality: a 4-year population-based study.

Successful aging may be a solution to the major challenges that population aging poses to healthcare systems, financial security, and labor force supply. Hence, we studied the value of factors discovered by exploratory factor analysis in predicting four main indicators of successful aging, and their association with mortality. We followed-up a nationally representative sample of 1284 older adults for a median of 50 months. Successful aging was defined by fast walking, independence, emotional vitality, and self-rated health. Exploratory factor analysis revealed five determinants: physical activity, life satisfaction and financial status, health status, stress, and cognitive function. Physical activity and health status were significant factors in living independently. Life satisfaction and financial status were associated with walking speed. Stress was solely associated with emotional vitality. Life satisfaction and financial status, and health status, were important predictors of self-rated health. Compared to people without any successful aging indicators, those with one, two, three, or four showed dose-dependent lessening of mortality risk, with respective hazard ratios of 0.39 (95% CI 0.25–0.59), 0.29 (95% CI 0.17–0.50), 0.23 (95% CI 0.11–0.51), and 0.09 (95% CI 0.01–0.66). These associations were stronger in males, older adults, smokers, and drinkers, than in their counterparts.

Mental Resources of Late Ontogenesis

The results of three studies of the mental resources of the elderly and old age are presented. The total sample size was 464 people aged 55 to 90 years. A study was made of mental resources (subjective age, cognitive and affective components of Theory of Mind), as well as the socio-demographic characteristics of the respondents. In all studies, the subjective age and the quality of life and health were studied as indicators of successful aging. The importance of mental resources (understanding of emotions, deception), subjective cognitive illusion of age (feeling younger than his years) for subjective satisfaction with life and health, coupled with lifestyle (active retirees and dependent on social assistance) is shown. Pensioners who lead an active lifestyle and pensioners that are dependent on social assistance perceive themselves younger than their years, although the subjective age is not interconnected with the quality of life and physical health of active people. Changes occur in the psychological systems of resources during the transition from the elderly to the senile age; at this period the growth of disease and cognitive preservation, along with psychological predictors, become a condition of life satisfaction.

Gender Differences in Trajectories of Successful Aging Indicators: Findings from Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging

본 연구에서는 다층모델(Multilevel modeling) 분석을 통해, 노년기 연령 증가에 따른 9개의 성공적 노화지표들(만성질환의 개수, 우울증, 일상생활 능력, 도구적 일상생활 능력, 인지기능, 사회경제적 활동 참여, 이웃과의 접촉 빈도, 건강에 대한 주관적인 만족도, 삶에 대한 전반적인 만족도)의 개인 내 변화궤적을 분석하고, 이러한 변화에 있어 학력의 효과를 통제한 후 남녀 간 차이가 있는지 검증하였다. 연구 변수들은 고령화 연구 패널조사를 통해 수집된 1차 년도(2006년) ~ 6차 년도(2016년) 자료에서 도출되었으며, 65세 이상(2006년 기준) 노인인구 중 여섯 번의 패널조사에서 모두 응답한 2,058명(남성: 822명, 여성: 1236명)의 자료를 활용하였다. 분석 결과, 65세 때에 남성 노인은 여성 노인보다 낮은 만성질환의 개수와 낮은 수준의 우울증상, 높은 일상생활 능력, 높은 인지기능, 활발한 사회경제적 활동 참여, 높은 주관적인 건강 및 삶의 만족도를 나타냈다. 그러나 65세 이후 연령이 증가함에 따라 남녀 모두 신체적, 인지적 기능은 감소하고 만성질환의 개수 및 우울증은 증가하였으며, 사회적 활동의 참여가 줄어들고, 개인의 건강과 삶에 대한 주관적인 만족도도 전반적으로 감소하였다. 대부분의 성공적 노화 지표들은 비선형의 변화를 나타냈으며 특히 70대 중반 이후부터 현저하게 증가 또는 감소하는 경향이 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 노인들의 건강한 삶을 증대시키기 위해서는 사회정책 및 보건적 개입이 70대 중반 이후부터 더 심도 있게 진행되어야 함을 시사한다.The current study aimed to examine the gender differences in trajectories of nine successful aging indicators (chronic disease, depression, activities of daily living, instrumental activities of daily living, mini mental state examination, social activity, personal contact, health satisfaction, and general life satisfaction) with age, controlling the effect of education. The data were from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging, which had been conducted biennially from 2006 to 2016. The sample included 822 men and 1,236 women who responded to all of the panel surveys and were 65 years old or above in 2006. Multilevel modeling analyses showed that older men had fewer chronic diseases; lower levels of depression; higher levels of activities of daily living, cognitive function, and social activity; and better perceived health satisfaction and general life satisfaction at age 65 years compared to women. However, both men and women showed increase in the number of chronic diseases and depression level, and decrease in physical, cognitive, and social functions with age. In addition, perceived health and life satisfaction also decreased after the age of 65. The trajectories of most of the indicators were non-linear, and markedly increased or decreased around mid-70s. Study limitations and implications were further discussed.
