A Literature Review to Identify Drivers and Barriers Affecting the Adoption of Green Practices for Indian Manufacturing Companies.

Environmental concerns are an increasingly important issue for many businesses for sustainable development. A supply chain with eco-friendly practices is called a 'Green supply chain' and is commonly observed in most manufacturing companies today. The present study provides an overview of the factors influencing the adoption of green practices by Indian manufacturing companies, including both drivers and barriers. Approximately 260 papers from various journals in the field of green supply chain management were collected to conduct this review to identify the major drivers responsible for implementing green practices and the associated challenge. This review has contributed to identifying the research gap concerning the necessity to explore the key factors influencing the Indian retail manufacturing sector. The study assists organizations in recognizing both the drivers and obstacles that affect the effective and enduring implementation of green manufacturing practices. Embracing these processes is increasingly vital for organizations aiming for sustainability, as well as for comprehending the factors that are propelling the swift transition towards green practices.

MARKETING PERFORMANCE OF GREEN PRODUCT MANUFACTURING COMPANY – A STUDY

BJCL is a pioneer jute manufacturing company in India. Jute is a natural product and has important economic value as a green manufacturing area. Various types of jute goods like jute yarn, twine, packaging bags, fine quality fabrics, carpet backing clothes are the important green manufacturing products of such a company. Salable production and dispatched data from various months has been studied and found that domestic marketing performance of the industry is rising. The demand for various jute goods has been increasing. Demand for jute bags and clothes in the domestic market as a packaging material has been significantly improved by the industry. It is found that salable production was comparatively less in the years 2020-21 due to the pandemic years. Salable production was comparatively higher in the year 2022-23 compared to 2021-22. From June 23 to September 23, salable production was gradually increasing. It is the continual improvement of the unit. It proved that BJCL months have been improving continually over the months and years too. It is found that the total number of finished bales of 500 bags in each bale has been increased from May 23 to August 23. Increasing trends of finished bales dispatch status of sacking quality were observed. This jute products study period was from October 2020 to March2023. In the study period of May 23 to August 23, the total number of bales dispatch status was increased from 299 to 1244 for Hessian quality of jute products

From intentions to action: how behavioural intentions shape employee performance through digital learning?

PurposeThis study aims to explore the impact of “Performance Expectancy” (PE) on the performance of Indian automotive manufacturing employees through their “Behavioural Intention” (BI) in the context of digital learning within the volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) world.Design/methodology/approachA descriptive research design was adopted to gather data from 211 employees of Indian automotive manufacturing companies. Structural equation modelling was applied for data analysis and obtaining results.FindingsLargely, the findings indicate that BI does mediate the relationship between PE and employee performance (EP) in the context of the Indian automotive manufacturing sector. The findings would help in boosting digital learning initiatives, improving EP and fostering organizational success in the VUCA world.Research limitations/implicationsThe current study focused on the Indian manufacturing industry. Extending the research beyond the manufacturing sector to other industries in India could possibly help in generalizing the findings, and thereby enhance knowledge of the broader consequences of digital learning on EP.Practical implicationsDigital learning platforms can enhance sustainable industrialization in the manufacturing sector by providing employees with access to digital learning opportunities. Managers must provide employees with access to digital learning opportunities for making them more creative and innovative, so that they can become real change agents, and can handle real-world problems more efficiently, leading the organization to deal with the complexities and unpredictability in this VUCA world.Originality/valueWithin the ambits of Indian automotive manufacturing organizations, there have been limited research studies that have used two constructs of the UTAUT2 framework to see their impact on EP in terms of digital learning. Thus, based on the limited information available, this research stands as a pioneering effort in the realm of digital learning within the Indian automotive manufacturing industry, where the relationship between PE and EP is examined through the mediational role of BI of employees. Moreover, this research possibly would pave the way for further research studies on exploring the role of potential factors influencing the strength and direction of the relationships between these variables (PE and EP).

MARKETING STRATEGIES OF APOLLO TYRES

Apollo Tyres Limited is an Indian Multinational tyre manufacturing company headquartered in Gurugram, Haryana. It was incorporated in 1972, and its first plant was commissioned in Perambra in Chalakudy, Kerala (India.) The company now has five manufacturing units in India, one in Netherlands and one in Hungary. It has a network of nearly 5,000 dealerships in India, of which over 2,500 are exclusive outlets. The company generates 69% of its revenues from India, 26% from Europe and 5% from other countries. Apollo announced its entry into the two-wheeler tyre segment with contract manufacturing in March 2016. The company's second plant in Europe, was inaugurated by the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban. in April 2017. Shares of Apollo Tyres Ltd. rose to their highest in little over two years in February, 2021 trading at ₹253.10.

GODI India: a kickstart to innovative batteries for electric vehicle

Research methodology The case is based on the data collected from various secondary sources only. Case overview/synopsis Godi India, a lithium-ion cell manufacturing company in India, was working to design e-cell for electric vehicles (EV) which would be compatible with Indian conditions and reduce the cost of battery to the extent possible because e-cell contributes half of the electric vehicle’s price. Godi India was set up in January 2020 by Mahesh Godi. Looking for opportunities in India after having worked in the USA for 17 years, Mahesh found that even with the rise in EV the lithium-ion cell manufacturing in India was almost zero. Using innovation as its main strategy, the start-up started its operation with a team of 30 scientists. The start-up already registered 25 patents under its name with few awaiting. Most of the EV companies relied on Chinese lithium-ion cell. Local lithium-ion cell manufacturing was believed to be the key for EV industry growth in a country. Central government production linked schemes worth INR 18,100 crore were signed by major players like Ola electric, Reliance new energy and Rajesh exports to develop locally manufactured advance cells. The push from the government for locally manufacturing the cells was a major trigger for the rise in the EV industry. The case provides the analysis of the strategies applied by the company to grow in the lithium-ion cell manufacturing industry. Complexity academic level This case can be used in strategic management, entrepreneurship and general management courses/modules at the Undergraduate and Postgraduate level.

Industry 4.0 refers to the part of key enabling technologies which includes cyber-physical systems, the internet of things, artificial intelligence big data analytics, and digital twins. Major driving forces behind automated and digital manufacturing settings include these technologies(Castelo-Branco, 2019). Emphasizing sustainability as the cornerstone of business strategy and calling for smart manufacturing, energy-efficient construction, and low-impact industrialization led to the foundation of the United Nations (UN) Sustainability 2030 agenda. Industry 4.0 technology aids in making company processes more sustainable. Few research fields have reported on this technology as it is aimed at improving business sustainability through the innovation of manufacturing processes in different industries (Bag, 2018). These applications are used in a variety of cutting-edge technology to modernize assembly lines. The Internet of Things helps machines to create, process, and transmit data in real-time to both people and other machines, robots can operate independently or in conjunction with humans, manipulate task like grabbing and spinning through its programming and design. On one hand big data and analytics deals with enormous and unstructured data using business intelligence, machine learning and analytics software using cloud computing techniques. Material can be added to solid blocks rather than mechanically removed to create high quality physical items through additive manufacturing (Godina,2020). These technologies are utilized in Industry 4.0 to create cyber physical system that are applied on the production line (Bai, 2020). It supports several sustainability related subfields; advanced manufacturing solutions may be built around the networked systems. It reduces the time to market, improves manufacturing flexibility and make better use of resources (Beier, 2020).

Analytical Research on Operational Issues of the Remanufacturing Process in India

Environmental awareness among the masses compelled many companies to adopt sustainable practices in their business operations. Remanufacturing is a well-tested and successful business model practiced in many European countries. But in many African and Asian countries, it is still nascent, including India. This research study tries to identify the critical factors in the “Operational Management” area for the viability of remanufacturing business in India. For this purpose, a questionnaire was developed based on the important factors identified from the extensive literature review. An online questionnaire survey was conducted among Indian white goods appliance manufacturing companies and their suppliers. The responses were analyzed statistically and ranked based on their criticality in initiating remanufacturing business in India. The findings may help the Indian government and manufacturing firms to frame proper strategies related to the operational management issues of remanufacturing business in India.

Critical Success Factors of Project Management in Indian Manufacturing Companies: A Quantitative Investigation

This quantitative investigation aims to identify the critical success factors (CSFs) of managements of projects in Indian manufacturing companies. CSF includes project planning, project control, project team management, and stakeholder management are significant within Indian manufacturing companies. There is also an availability of a measurable impact of different project management practices on project success. The conclusions of this research can help project managers in Indian manufacturing companies to understand the critical factors that affect project success and to implement appropriate project management practices to achieve success. This research can also add to the existing amount of research on project management by providing more insight into the workings of CSFs in the context of Indian manufacturing companies. The findings of this study also serve as a reference for project managers in other industries and countries to identify and prioritize CSFs in their specific contexts. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the CSF of PM in Indian manufacturing companies, which can help organizations to enhance their project management practices and ultimately achieve project success.

Endogeneity and the Dynamics of Corporate Governance and Innovation in India’s Manufacturing Sector

This article presents the System Generalized Method of Moments (SGMM) results on the empirical association between innovation and corporate governance for a panel data set of 88 manufacturing companies in India listed on the NSE 200 Index from 2014 to 2020. GMM approach controls the potential sources of endogeneity inherent in the innovation—corporate governance relationship which mainly arises due to unobserved heterogeneity and simultaneity bias. We empirically analyze corporate governance and innovation to understand the market value of research and development practices of manufacturing companies in India. Our results indicate that Board size, Board meetings, and CEO duality support the “value creation” hypothesis of corporate governance of manufacturing companies in India. However, ownership concentration and Board meeting contradict “value creation hypotheses.” Therefore, this study identifies various factors of corporate governance that can help manufacturing companies in India in innovation and growth options. Further, this study recommends that ownership concentration and Board meetings should be properly assessed, as the concentrated owners should not merely act as expropriates, but rather should enable the long-term sustainability of the firm by taking the initiative, which enhances growth.

Circular supply chain implementation performance measurement framework: a comparative case analysis

Circular supply chain (CSC) has gained traction amongst academicians, practitioners, and policymakers across the world due to its wide range of sustainable benefits to business organizations. CSC amalgamates the circular economy (CE) thinking into supply chain operations of industry and improves the three sustainability dimensions of the organizational performance. However, manufacturing organizations in developing economies are finding difficult to measure the impact of CSC adoption on organizational performance. Therefore, this research aims to explore the CSC performance measures and to develop a performance measurement framework for assessing the impact of CSC implementation on business organizational performance. This research proposes a modified balanced scorecard (BSC) based hybrid framework of Pythagorean fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (PF-AHP) and Pythagorean fuzzy weighted aggregated sum product assessment (PF-WASPAS) methods. The effectiveness of the proposed framework is validated through an empirical case study of an Indian manufacturing company. Further, the proposed framework is tested with other three Indian manufacturing companies and their results are compared with the case company. The finding reveals that the overall performance of empirical case company is 62.88% based on define set of performance measures and performance of other three companies are 64.51, 56.47, and 52.43%, respectively. The outcomes of this study shows that the proposed research framework is more reliable, consistent, and robust with circular perspectives and it also offers an effective way to measure and benchmark the impact of CSC adoption on organizational performance. This research contributes to the knowledge of CSC management for achieving sustainability in the business environment.

Sustainability reporting is a tool used by the companies to convey their performance beyond the bottom line to its stakeholders. In India sustainability reporting will be compulsory for some specific companies from the year 2022-23. This study aims at the comparison of sustainability pillars to know the sustainability disclosure practices by three selected cement manufacturing companies in India. This study also aims at calculating the sustainability reporting index of these three selected cement manufacturing companies. Scores are derived using information gathered from secondary sources and content analysis of the annual reports and sustainability reports of the selected companies. The sustainability pillars and sustainability reporting index of the three chosen organisations were found to differ.

PurposeThe study aims to identify organizational variables of quality 4.0 for an Indian manufacturing company in the case of digital transformation. Furthermore, the organization enhances its quality 4.0 performances to its success based on the degree of relevance of these variables, insight into these variables and sub-factors to prioritize them.Design/methodology/approachInitially, two rounds of the survey were conducted with 11 decision-makers from the company made to receive organizational variables scores and prioritize the factors and sub-factors. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) based research methodology has been proposed to assign the criterion weights and prioritize the identified variables.FindingsThe results of this AHP model demonstrate that “Committed Leadership” is recognized as the top positioned variable and most significant organizational variable, followed by Collaboration and Quality culture, which are developed at the next level. These essential organizational variables with their sub-categories' priorities are identified as contributing attributes.Research limitations/implicationsThe findings facilitate quality 4.0 in the digitalization era, which take into contemplating the current state of the business. Furthermore, the understanding of variables provides insightful guidance to analyze, solve complex problems and assess the efficacy of quality 4.0 in digital transformation.Originality/valueThe novelty of this study is to pinpoint, and evaluate the responsible organizational variables and prioritize them that lead to high productivity and competitive advantage considering the AHP method.

Lean based cycle time reduction in manufacturing companies using black widow based deep belief neural network

Manufacturing companies in India are looking forward to innovative principles in order to come out with novel product designs to compete with other companies. Recently the lean principle has been focused on many companies for maximizing profit through minimizing waste. So, to track and eliminate unwanted activity, various researchers have developed several approaches based on the lean principle. When the manufacturing business tries to improve efficiency, cost base, and customer responsiveness, cycle time is one of the viable parameters that should be optimized as much as possible. This systematic study focuses on reducing cycle time in the manufacturing industry to boost productivity. However, effective tracing and elimination of waste with an improved, streamlined process are not achieved using the traditional lean approach. To solve this problem, a lean approach based on the deep learning technique is designed in this current research to minimize cycle time. Initially, the current state mapping of an organizational structure is done using Value Stream Mapping (VSM). Then, Modified Deep Belief Neural Network is used to detect excess time consumption. The modification is done by optimizing the weight parameter with the assistance of the black widow optimization algorithm. Once the excess time is detected, it is further eliminated to maximize the profit. The simulation analysis of the proposed BWDBN approach is done, and the actual value is compared with the predicted value. The analysis indicates that accuracy, precision and recall of 98%, 97% and 96.5% are reached using the proposed BWDBN. This suggested that novel product design and maximized profit can be attained using the proposed BWDBN approach.

Economic value-added (EVA) myths and realities: evidence from the Indian manufacturing sector

PurposeThe main aim of this paper is to examine the claim that economic value added (EVA) advocates its superiority over the traditional accounting-based financial performance measures, i.e. profit after tax (PAT), earnings per share (EPS), return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE) and return on investment (ROI) in the Indian manufacturing sector and at the same time, give empirical facts. It also tests and examines the information content of various performance measures and their relationship with stock returns.Design/methodology/approachThe paper uses the sample of 534 Indian manufacturing companies from the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) during the period 2000–2018. Multiple regression models are applied to examine the information content of EVA and traditional performance measures in explaining shareholders’ returns.FindingsRelative information content tests revealed that traditional accounting-based measures such as EPS, ROE and ROA performed better than EVA in explaining the returns of Indian manufacturing companies. Incremental information content of EVA adds little contribution to information content above traditional performance measures. The claim of superiority of EVA over accounting-based measures in association with shareholder returns is proved invalid in Indian manufacturing companies.Originality/valueThis study concludes that EVA has no superiority over traditional accounting-based financial performance measures in explaining stock returns of Indian manufacturing companies. To achieve heftiness in outcomes, panel data are tested by using Breusch–Pagan–Godfrey (BPG) test for heteroskedasticity, Hausman’s test for fixed and random effect, variance inflation factor (VIF) test for multicollinearity and Durbin–Watson test for autocorrelation.

Case Study of Furniture Manufacturing Companies

Purpose: This study encompasses four cases pertaining to furniture manufacturing industry in India. Manufacturing is essential for our nation and hence four companies are studied namely: Spacewood Pvt. Ltd, Choice Furntech LLP, Stanley Lifestyles Ltd, and VK Sofa Makers Pvt.Ltd. There are few similarities and associations with all four of these companies. This study also uncovers various aspects of minute details related to furniture pricing, customization, and unique selling proposition via segmentation/segments that they are operating in. The companies that are in study are basically seasoned and very strong fundamentally and operationally. Design/Methodology/Approach: Observations and interactions/interviews with employees of all the four companies along with online databases were studied for finding similarities and dissimilarities in certain key variables and bring out the best variables/ practices that could be replicated by others. Findings/ Results: This case study reviews the current situation of various customization processes through multiple variables in furniture manufacturing companies in India and the data is collected from interaction with employees, vendors, customers, company websites, scholarly literature, and internet sources for results that could have far reaching implications when compared to others abroad. Originality: It is a study to find commonality or similarity[s] among these four companies with reference to VK Sofa makers for any future entrepreneurs to have a sustainable/ implementable business model that can grow rapidly by customization and superior service quality. Type of Paper: Case Study based research analysis for knowing similarities among dissimilar companies of a same industry as well as to know the dissimilarities of similar nature companies in a given market space; hence the science and art of running these companies is the basis for this case study.
