Regression Rate Study in HTPB/GOX Hybrid Rocket Motors.

The theoretical and experimenIal studies on hybrid rocket motor combustion research are briefly reviewed and the need for a clear understanding of hybrid rocket fuel regression rate mechanism is brought out. A test facility established at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, for hybrid rocket motor research study is described.The results of an experimental study on hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene and gaseous oxygen hybrid rocket motor are presented. Fuel grains with ammonium perchlorate additive have shownenhanced oxidizermass flux dependence. Smallergrains have higher regression rates than those of the larger ones.

Surface layer turbulence processes in low wind speeds over land

The atmospheric diffusion in the tropics is generally associated with low wind speeds, typically of magnitudes less than 3 ms −1. Low wind speeds would cause significant free convection in the daytime and strong stable conditions in the nighttime. Hence, the atmospheric surface layer turbulence associated with low wind speeds could be different from that of moderate to high wind speeds. The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss the variation of surface layer turbulence parameters and their dependence on atmospheric stability. The turbulence data collected from micrometeorological tower at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campus, New Delhi, India, using a sonic anemometer at a height of 4 m as part of the SF 6 tracer diffusion experiments have been analyzed to achieve these objectives. The turbulence statistics computed include averages, variances and covariances of the fluctuating wind components and temperature. In all, 38 hourly test runs were analyzed to compute various parameters such as surface turbulent fluxes of heat and momentum and the variances of velocity fluctuations. Results reveal that the turbulence parameters vary differently with atmospheric stability and wind speed for the wind speeds more than 1 ms −1 as against wind speeds less than 1 ms −1. A spectral analysis was carried out on the turbulence data. Results indicate that larger eddies dominate during nighttime as compared to the daytime convective conditions.

Investigations of Fungal Fruiting Bodies as Biosorbents for the Removal of Heavy Metals from Industrial Processing Streams

Abstract The revival of interest in biotechnology has fueled research in many sectors of environmental biotechnology. The present paper describes research utilizing adsorbents prepared from wood-rotting mushrooms growing wild in tropical forests. Nine species of mushrooms were screened using copper(II) as the model adsorbate. While may species showed excellent potential, comparable to biosorbents reported in literature, Ganodernma lucidum emerged as the best biosorbent. This biosorbent was further developed for use in a packed—bed bioreactor for treatment that adsorption is by chemical binding to the biosorbent. ∗Present address: Department of Chemistry, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India.

Energy engineering education at postgraduate level: Issues involved, course structure and its proposed adaptation

Some basic issues involved in providing energy engineering education at postgraduate level are briefly discussed. Salient features of a proposed teaching programme in energy engineering are described. Finally, suitable adaptation of the proposed course structure as per the existing three semester M. Tech. programme at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi is proposed.

Influence of organic and inorganic fertilization on the growth and nutrition of rice and fish in a dual culture system

SUMMARYField experiments were conducted for three consecutive years during 1988–90 at a research farm near the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, West Bengal, India to study the influence of organic and inorganic fertilizers on the performance of rice and fish in a dual culture system. Under waterlogged conditions the grain yield and dry matter of the rice variety CR1018 was increased both when inorganic N fertilizer (50 kg N/ha) was supplied or when a combination of organic (lOt FYM/ha) and inorganic N fertilizer (25 kg N/ha) were applied as compared with an organic fertilizer alone (20 t FYM/ha). The recovery of N as well as grain yield response per kg of N applied was also greater when inorganic N was applied. On the other hand, the growth of the fish species Java punti (Puntius javanicus) when grown alone (monoculture) and Catla (Catla catla), Mrigal (Cirrhinus mrigala) and Java punti (Puntius javanicus) grown together (polyculture) in the rice field was found to be superior when organic fertilizer was applied either alone or in combination with an inorganic fertilizer. The total number of phytoplankton species as food for the fish under organic manuring was more than under inorganic fertilization. In low-lying waterlogged situations (15–45 cm water depth), the total productivity could be increased by supplying the appropriate nutrition to both rice and fish in such dual culture systems.

Pm metal matrix composites: experience at IIT Kanpur

The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, has been consistently active in pm education and research. In this paper, the facilities and past and present research activities at IIT Kanpur are described, with particular emphasis on pm metal matrix composites.

Student paper awards

Two presentations in the Geomagnetism and Paleomagnetism Section were named “Outstanding Student Papers” at the AGU 1992 Fall Meeting in San Francisco. Sanghamitra Sahu presented “Thermal Dependence of the Anisotropy Constant for Single Crystal Titanomagnetic (Fe3−xTix04, x=0.6).” She is currently an M.S. candidate in geophysics at the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis. Sahu's research interests include rock and mineral magnetism, specifically magnetic domain imaging and interpretation and study of various magnetic properties of magnetic minerals found in the Earth. Sahu received her B.S. degree in geological sciences from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India.

Characteristics of turbulent fluxes of sensible heat and momentum in the surface boundary layer during the Indian summer monsoon

Turbulent fluctuations of wind and temperature were measured using a three-component sonic anemometer at 8 m on a 30 m micro-meteorological tower erected at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur (22.3° N, 87.2° E), India, as part of the Monsoon Trough Boundary Layer Experiment (MONTBLEX). Diurnal and nocturnal variations of fluxes of sensible heat and momentum were estimated by the eddy correlation technique from 42 observations, each of 10 min duration during 6–8 July in the monsoon season of 1989. The estimated heat flux shows a diurnal trend while the momentum flux shows variability but no particular trend. The nocturnal heat flux changes sign intermittently.

Wave transmission and reflection characteristics of a rigid surface and submerged horizontal plate

Abstract The wave transmission and reflection characteristics of a rigidly fixed surface and submerged horizontal plate were investigated experimentally in detail for a wide range of incident wave steepnesses and for different depths of submerge of the plate in deep water conditions in regular water wave fields. The experiments were conducted at the Ocean Engineering Centre, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, India, in a wave flume 10 m long, 0.3 m wide and in a constant water depth of 0.8 m. The horizontal plate is 0.22 m thick and 1.2 m in length, covering the enrire width of the flume. From the present investigation, it is found that for a rigid surface plate, the coefficient of transmission is a minimum and the coefficient of reflection is a maximum, but the maximum value of the coefficient of energy loss occurs for plates submerged closer to the still-water level (SWL) and not for the surface plate. It is also found that the value of the coefficient of reflection increases with the increase in the value of the Reddy-Neelamani ( RN ) number, the ratio of horizontal water particle excursion at the bottom of the plate in its absence to the length of the plate. The coefficient of transmission is found to decrease rapidly with increase in the value of RN number up to 0.1. The wave transmission is only 5% for RN from 0.1 to 0.2. It is also found that for RN number greater than 0.04, the minimum energy dissipation is consistently about 60% of the incident wave energy.

Wave transmission and reflection characteristics of a partially immersed rigid vertical barrier

The wave transmission and reflection by a partially immersed rigid vertical barrier was studied in detail in deep water conditions by measuring the transmitted and reflected wave histories. The experimental investigations were carried out for a wide range of wave steepness, at different depths of immersion of the barrier in a wave flume 0.3 m wide, 10 m long and in a constant water depth of 0.8 m at Ocean Engineering Centre, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, India. The power transmission theory proposed by Wiegel [(1960), Transmission of waves past a rigid vertical barrier. J. WatWay Harbour Div., ASCE WW1, 1–12] was used for validation of the measurements. This theory is found to predict satisfactorily the wave transmission for wave steepness up to 0.05, especially when the depth of immersion of the plate is more than about 20% of the water depth. The measured coefficient of reflection is found to be decreasing with increase in wave steepness. The maximum value of coefficient of transmission is found to be only about 0.15 for horizontal water particle excursion at the bottom tip of the barrier of up to twice the thickness of the barrier. The coefficient of energy loss is found to increase with the increase in wave steepness. This energy dissipation is found to be more predominant during the process of reflection than transmission.

In order to investigate friction and fretting on quasicrystals at room temperature in a reliable manner, we have subjected sintered samples to tests in a vacuum chamber evacuated to a residual pressure lower than 10−5 mbar. Pin-on-disc tests and fretting tests were ran using hard steel spherical counterparts. Experiments in vacuum reveal that the variation of the coefficient of friction with cumulated sliding distance is very different when one considers Cr-hard steel riding on alumina, on a (true) quasicrystal or on a high-carbon steel. Sharp minima in friction coefficients and adhesive forces occur when the quasicrystalline surface is loaded in contact with a metallic surface. The characteristic friction values measured in high vacuum are smaller than in ambient atmosphere by at least a factor 2, thus indicating that the oxide layer is involved to a significant extent in determining the tribological mechanisms. The discussion focuses on an interpretation of the differences observed between samples, based on their chemical composition and possible bonding to steel. For the first time, an estimate of the true surface energy of a quasicrystal is derived from measurements.
