Nitrogen distribution in hybrid and local corn varieties and its possible relationship to a declining soil nitrogen pool under shifting agriculture at Indian Church, Belize

Nutrient levels in corn and competing weed species in a first year milpa, Indian church, Belize, C.A.

Grain production in two 1/4 hectare plots gave 2971 and 1380 kg/ha for an average yield of 2175 kg/ha. Average yield for local farmers was 1700 kg/ha. Weed biomass accounted for 50% of total bioomass in the hydric Site 4, but held 64–83% of the total nutrients. In the mesic Site 1, values were 5% and 3–29% respectively.Canna edulis was the most abundant weed species. Soil nutrient levels neither increased or decreased significantly between clearing and harvesting. Any decline in future crop production would be due to increased weed competition and not a decline in soil fertility. Weevil (Sitophilus zeamais) infestation is a serious problem in hybrid corn not encountered with local varieties.

The Indian Church in a Sponsor-Oriented Society

Can or should a church be “indigenous” in terms of the local ethnic group when that group constitutes a minority and is looked upon — even by its members — as occupying an inferior position with respect to the dominant society? This was the problem faced by a group of Aztec Indians as they went to the “First Evangelical Indian Congress” in Mexico in October 1961 (see the preceding article). The writer, who attended the conference as an observer and who has worked for a number of years with this Aztec group, sets forth an interpretation of the solution to this problem which their leaders reached after discussions with Indians from both independent and denominationally related churches at the conference.

Indian Work and Church-Mission Integration

The current trend toward “indigenization,” or transferral of responsibility from the missions to the national churches and from missionaries to nationals, is represented in a number of areas today by the plan for “integration” of the mission with the national church. In this plan the mission as such is dissolved and the missionaries become “fraternal workers” under the administrative responsibility of the church in the country where they are serving. The writer of the present article discusses the danger that, for Indian work in Latin America, this integration may lead to a greater degree of paternalism toward the Indian churches, or even in some cases to curtailment of the Indian work; and suggests certain measures for the missions of the sending churches to consider as a means to offset this danger and to help the national churches develop the full potential which their Indian constituency represents. The implications of this article apply just as well to other areas where there are minority populations with different languages and cultures from the national group.
