A comparative assessment of dento-facial aesthetics among dental, medical, nursing and physiotherapy students in a college of health sciences

There is increased awareness and concerns about dentofacial aesthetics in most population. We sought to determine the self-assessment of dental aesthetics and perceived treatment need among a group of health professions trainees and compare the same with the researcher’s report using the Aesthetic component (AC) of Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN). This was a cross-sectional study of undergraduates in our College of Health Sciences. The researcher was calibrated. Subjects supplied their socio-demographic details, responses on perception of their teeth, and smile on a self-administered questionnaire. Additionally, respondents selected and documented a picture that best matches theirs from the AC of the IOTN chart, while the researcher did the same and compared the scores. Data were analyzed using the SPSS version 16.0.: 121 students were studied. 59% were previous dental clinic attendees. The majority (80.2%) usually females rated their smile pleasant. 69.4% expressed satisfaction with the appearance of their teeth. Male and female subjects differed significantly in the ratings of their smile and teeth; with significantly more females rating themselves better than average. Subjects’ scores differ significantly from the researcher’s; most subjects rated their occlusion better especially females (p<0.001), physiotherapy students(p=0.0016), and previous clinic attendees(p=0.02). The odds of correct self-assessment increased by 1.6 with respondents' gender and department.: While dental students are well suited for dento-facial aesthetic assessment, there is a need to introduce aspects of dental aesthetics and orthodontic treatment need appraisal among other oral health subjects to curricula in college of health science.

Influence of malocclusion on OHRQoL in adolescents in initial orthodontic treatment phase.

Besides correcting malocclusions, another main objective of orthodontic treatment is to improve patients' oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). This study aimed to assess changes in OHRQoL of children within the first six months of orthodontic therapy with fixed orthodontic appliances. 85 patients aged 11 to 14 years requiring fixed orthodontic appliance therapy were included. The children completed the German version of the Child Perceptions Questionnaire (CPQ-G-11-14) before (T0), 1 month (T1) and 6 months (T2) after the start of orthodontic treatment. The type of malocclusion was categorized according to the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN). The initial type of malocclusion affected the children's OHRQoL, whereas gender and age did not. The IOTN dental health component (DHC) had a significant impact on the CPQ score (median CPQ of 15.00 for the group DHC 4 vs. 22.50 for DHC 5, p = 0.032). The onset of orthodontic treatment initially affected the CPQ domains "Oral symptoms" and "Functional limitations, with a change versus baseline of 2.00 (p = 0.001), but improved again after 6 months. Regression analysis demonstrated that children with an IOTN DHC 5 malocclusion experienced a greater impact on their ORHQoL, as indicated by a CPQ score 7.35 points higher than that of children with an IOTN DHC 4 malocclusion (p = 0.015). At the beginning of orthodontic treatment, the OHRQoL slightly worsens, probably due to the discomfort and appearance of the appliances. However, 6 months after the start of orthodontic treatment, OHRQoL improved again in patients with severe malocclusion (IOTN 4 and 5), and approached baseline values. The results help the clinician to better understand specific aspects of oral health that may be affected by different malocclusions, thereby improving the child's satisfaction and overall quality of life.

Prevalence and nature of bullying in schoolchildren aged 10–14 years and its association with malocclusion: A cross-sectional study in the South East of the UK

Objective: To investigate the prevalence of, and relationship between, bullying and malocclusion in schoolchildren aged 10–14 years in the South East of the UK. Design: Cross-sectional cohort study. Setting: Sixteen primary and secondary schools in South East of the UK. Participants: Schoolchildren aged 10–14 years who were consented to participate. Methods: The prevalence and nature of bullying were measured using a questionnaire. Traits of malocclusion and the need for orthodontic treatment was assessed by clinical examination and determined by the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) Dental Health (DHC) and Aesthetic components (AC). Results: Complete data were collected for 698 participants. The number defined as being bullied was 68 (9.7%). There was no difference in the prevalence of bullying between gender, ethnicity or age. Higher rates of bullying were reported in mixed sex schools ( P = 0.03). Participants with an increased overjet ( P = 0.02) and/or a greater need for treatment, as measured by IOTN DHC ( P = 0.01) and AC ( P = 0.01), reported higher rates of bullying. While there was no difference in the overall prevalence of bullying between genders, boys were more likely than girls to experience physical bullying ( P <0.001) and being called names ( P = 0.03) Conclusion: A significant relationship was evident between being bullied and certain traits of malocclusion.

The association between self-esteem and aesthetic component of smile among adolescents

ObjectivesSelf-esteem plays a crucial role during adolescence in a shaping of an individual’s overall well-being and confidence. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between the self-esteem in adolescents and their smile aesthetics, as well as to assess the alignment of opinions on this matter between adolescents and dentists.MethodsSample included 413 students in Split-Dalmatia County, aged 13 to 18 (60% females). Data on demographic issues, orthodontic history, and desire for orthodontic treatment were collected by the self-administrated questionnaire. Coopersmith's Self-Esteem Inventory was also used. Smile aesthetics was assessed by each participant and dentist independently using an Aesthetic Component of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN AC).ResultsSelf-esteem was higher in adolescents who rated their smile aesthetics equally to the dentist than in those who considered their aesthetics to be worse than the dentist (18.5 vs. 16; P = 0.011). The multiple linear regression revealed that the self-esteem of adolescents was positively related to undergone previous orthodontic treatment (β = 1.286, P = 0.020) while negatively related to the female gender (β = −2.531, P ≤ 0.001) and IOTN AC assessed by dentist (β = −0.356, P = 0.015). It was not related to educational level or desire for orthodontic treatment.ConclusionThe self-esteem in adolescence is influenced the most by gender, but the orthodontic treatment and better smile aesthetics might also contribute.

Evaluation of orthodontic treatment need in school children of shimla using index of orthodontic treatment need

: The objective of this survey was to assess the orthodontic treatment need in school children of Shimla aged 12-16 years using Index of orthodontic treatment need.The study included 576 children studying in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, India who were assessed for orthodontic treatment need using IOTN and results were expressed in percentages. The difference in orthodontic treatment need for males and female and the orthodontist and subjects perception of orthodontic treatment need was calculated by χ² test. Pearson’s correlation assessed the correlation between the Dental Health Component and Aesthetic Component of IOTN. 10.7% (62) of the children had definite need for orthodontic treatment (AC) while 31.9% (184) had definite need for orthodontic treatment (DHC) with statistically insignificant difference between male and female. The difference between orthodontist perception of treatment need and that of subject was statistically significant. A strong and positive correlation between DHC and AC of IOTN was found which was statistically significant.31.9% (184) and 10.8% (62) of the schoolchildren had definite need for orthodontic treatment according to the dental health component and aesthetic component of index of orthodontic treatment need respectively. 49.7% (286) of the subjects had knowledge about orthodontic treatment. 45.8% (264) of the subjects expressed desire to undergo orthodontic treatment. Orthodontist was more critical in aesthetic evaluation as compared to the schoolchildren.

Prevalence and factors influencing bullying among Egyptian schoolchildren.

To evaluate the prevalence of bullying among schoolchildren and to study the correlation between bullying and a specific type of malocclusion, self-esteem, oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL), the need for orthodontic treatment and socioeconomic status. A cross-sectional study. Low, middle and high socioeconomic-class schools in the same educational district in Cairo, Egypt. A total of 324 Egyptian schoolchildren aged 11-14 years. Validated questionnaires were used to assess self-reported bullying frequency and intensity, self-esteem and OHRQoL. The Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) was used to assess the orthodontic treatment need and the participants' occlusion was classified according to the British Standard Incisors (BSI) classification. Bullying was found to be prevalent in 61.7% of the sample. Regression analysis revealed that participants with a Class II division 1 incisor relationship had the highest odds ratio (OR) for predicting bullying (OR = 1.86, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.38-2.15). Being bullied was significantly associated with lower self-esteem (OR = 0.47, 95% CI = 0.13-0.78), worse OHRQoL (OR = 2.73, 95% CI = 1.95-3.15) and a high need for orthodontic treatment, as determined by the IOTN Dental Health Component score (OR = 1.33, 95% CI = 1.05-1.95) and IOTN Aesthetic Component score (OR = 1.52, 95% CI = 1.12-1.88). Moreover, participants in high and middle socioeconomic-class groups had a lower OR for predicting bullying than those in the low socioeconomic-class group (OR = 0.27, 95% CI = 0.13-0.54). The bullying prevalence among Egyptian schoolchildren aged 11-14 years was very high. The prevalence of bullying was higher in schoolchildren with higher orthodontic treatment need and Class II division 1 incisor relationship. Bullying was correlated to poor self-esteem as well as poor OHRQoL. In addition, low socioeconomic status was found to be a potential predictor for bullying.

Oral habits, sociopsychological orthodontic needs, and sociodemographic factors perceived by caregivers impact oral health-related quality of life in children with and without autism?

Caregivers play a crucial role in assessing the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of young individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study assessed the impact of sociodemographic and oral conditions on OHRQoL and family dynamics in young individuals with and without autism, as perceived by guardians. This comparative cross-sectional study included young individuals aged 6 to 14 years and their guardians. Data were collected at a specialized institution and dental schools. Guardians completed the Parental-Caregiver Perceptions Questionnaire (P-CPQ), Family Impact Scale (FIS), and sociodemographic and oral habits questionnaires. The sociopsychological need for orthodontic treatment was assessed using the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN). The sample included 144 youths and caregivers. The ASD group had higher P-CPQ and FIS scores. Factors associated with poorer perceived OHRQoL included higher youth age, lower caregiver education, higher IOTN scores, teeth clenching (RR = 1.20; 95% CI: 1.01-1.41), and lip sucking. Lower parental education (RR = 1.75; 95% CI: 1.10-2.80) and higher IOTN scores from the caregiver's perspective impacted family dynamics. Caregivers of young individuals with ASD perceived a lower OHRQoL, and families in this group were more affected by sociodemographic and oral conditions.

The distribution of malocclusion using the index of orthodontic treatment needs at a university dental hospital in and around Pretoria, South Africa

: The study described the patterns of malocclusion traits and the orthodontic treatment needs at a Dental Hospital using the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Needs (IOTN), Dental Health Component (DHC). We evaluated 2079 pre-treatment study models and clinical records of orthodontic patients from the Department of Orthodontics waiting list. The assessment of malocclusion was measured according to the molar relationship using Angle's classification.The DHC was further used to assess the five malocclusion traits: - missing teeth, overjet, crossbite, displacement of contact point, and overbite, including open bite (MOCDO). The MOCDO score was calculated to determine the orthodontic treatment needed based on the DHC grades 1–5. The data was analysed using SPSS version 28 and the level of significance was set at p≤ 0.05.: The sample consisted of 59.3% (n=1232) females and 40.7% (n= 847) males. The mean age of the study sample was 14 years (SD±2.3) and ranged between 12 to 20 years. Angle's Class I malocclusion was found in 57.7% of the sample, followed by Class II (35.4%) and Class III (6.9%). The orthodontic treatment needs DHC grade were: 53% grade 4 (need for orthodontic treatment), 21% grade 5 (great need for orthodontic treatment), 17% grade 3 (borderline need for orthodontic treatment), 6% grade 2 (little need for orthodontic treatment), and 3% grade 1 (no orthodontic treatment need). A statistically significant difference was found in Angle Class I malocclusion and the DHC grades (p=0.001), as well as MOCDO variables and DHC grades (p=0.001).Angle's Class I malocclusion was the most predominant in our study sample compared to Class II and Class III malocclusions. The DHC of IOTN was successfully used to evaluate the severity of malocclusion with the majority of the sample in Grades 4 and 5, requiring mandatory orthodontic treatment. A high frequency of the occlusal traits included missing teeth, overjet, crossbite, displaced contacts and overbite. The results of our study showed that most patients on the orthodontic waiting list require mandatory orthodontic treatment. Therefore, it is recommended that DHC be used to place patients on the waiting list to prioritise orthodontic treatment.

Assessment of Impact of Malocclusion on Oral Health Status and Oral Health-related Quality of Life among School and College Students of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India: A Cross-sectional Study

Introduction: Malocclusion is multifactorial in origin, caused by the interaction of various general and local factors. The consequences of malocclusion include dental caries, periodontitis, impaction of teeth, and compromised chewing abilities. Thus, if left untreated, malocclusion can not only lead to oral health problems like periodontal problems and dental caries but also psychological problems, causing a loss of selfesteem and confidence in the individual. Aim: To assess the potential relationship between malocclusion with orthodontic treatment needs and dental caries, periodontal diseases, dental traumatic injuries, oral hygiene, and Oral Health-related Quality of Life (OHRQoL). Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1800 school-going and college students at their respective Institutions in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India from December 2021 to June 2022 with and without orthodontic treatment needs, to identify malocclusion and various oral conditions/diseases associated with it, in addition to the effect of malocclusion on OHRQoL. Oral health status was assessed using the World Health Organisation (WHO) Basic Oral Health Survey (2013); malocclusion was assessed using the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Needs (IOTN) index, and OHRQoL was measured using OHIP-14. Data were analysed using Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.0 software, and statistical significance was assessed using Pearson’s Chisquare test and Mann-Whitney U Test. Results: The study was conducted among 1800 subjects aged between 14 and 21 years (mean 17.47±1.58 years) from various schools and colleges in Chennai. Among the study subjects, 1066 (59.2%) were males, and 734 (40.8%) were females. About 46.7% of the study subjects had malocclusion. The binomial logistic regression analysis suggested that study subjects with orthodontic treatment needs had greater odds of experiencing dental caries, gingival bleeding, and traumatic dental injuries compared to study subjects without orthodontic treatment needs. Conclusion: There is a definite relationship between malocclusion, orthodontic treatment needs, dental caries, periodontal diseases, dental traumatic injuries, oral hygiene, and OHRQoL.

Impact of orthodontic treatment on OHRQoL of adolescents: a longitudinal study.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the extent to which orthodontic treatment need is perceived by the patients and by the orthodontist, as well as the possible impacts on the OHRQoL (Oral Health-Related Quality of Life) over the course of conventional orthodontic treatment in adolescent patients. The sample consisted of 55 adolescents. The perception of patients and orthodontists relative to the malocclusion was evaluated by the IOTN (Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need). The OHRQoL was evaluated by the Child-OIDP (Child-Oral Impacts on Daily Performances) questionnaire before the conventional orthodontic appliance was bonded (T0); and at the following time intervals: after one week (T1), one month (T2), three months (T3), six months (T4), and after the end of orthodontic treatment (T5). Adolescents who had large orthodontic treatment needs had a poor OHRQoL, according to their self-perception (p=0.003) and according to the orthodontist's perception (p<0.001), when compared with patients with small and moderate needs. There was statistically significant difference in the OHRQoL between the time intervals T0 and T1 (p=0.021), T2 and T3 (p<0.001), T3 and T4 (p=0.033), and T0 and T5 (p<0.002). At the end of treatment, all evaluated participants reported an improvement in OHRQoL. It was concluded that adolescents and orthodontists agreed with regard to the perception of orthodontic treatment need. In the first week and in the first month of orthodontic treatment, there was a negative impact on the OHRQoL. After three months, an improvement of OHRQoL was detected, which has progressed over time.

Assessment of malocclusion and patients' need for orthodontic treatment.

Objective: To document the frequency of various classes of Angle’s malocclusion and its treatment need among children of both gender between 13-17 years age attending government high schools in Peshawar District. Study Design: Cross sectional study. Setting: Khyber Medical University Institute of Dentistry. Period: Jan 2020 to Nov 2021. Material &amp; Methods: 900 patients of both genders between the ages of 13 and 17 were used in the current investigation. A performa was used to record malocclusions e.g. Angle's classification, overjet, overbite, open bite and cross bite. For various malocclusions, the Dental Health Component (DHC) of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) index was reported. Results: We looked at 900 students between the ages of 13 and 17 whose guardians had signed a written consent form. Among the 900 students who were examined, 60% (540) were males, and 40% (360) were females. 175 individuals had normal dental health, 420 had class 1 malocclusions, 265 had class 2s, and 40 had class 3s. Overjet was excessive in 210 cases and reduced in 53. Overbite was excessive in 201 cases and reduced in 34. In 185, there was an open bite. The difference was significant (P &lt; 0.05). In 489 cases, DHC grade I and II, 310 cases, grade III, and 101 cases, grade IV, and grade V. The difference was significant (P&lt; 0.05). Conclusion: The most frequent malocclusion is class 1. DHC grades I and II were more frequently observed in patients. Malocclusion can be identified using the Dental Health Components (DHC) of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN).

Helping general dental practitioners use the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need: an assessment of available educational apps.

Introduction The Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) defines who receives treatment on the NHS. The British Orthodontic Society developed the 'Easy IOTN' app to help the dental team use IOTN more effectively.Aim This study aims to investigate the quality of the 'Easy IOTN' app and any alternative mobile apps developed to aid a dentist's ability to use IOTN.Materials and methods The App Store and Google Play were searched to identify available apps which provide an educational resource for IOTN. Any app identified was assessed using the Mobile App Rating Scale (MARS) and the Royal College of Physicians' health informatics unit checklist. The 'Easy IOTN' app continuous professional development (CPD) section was assessed for accuracy using a focus group.Results Only the 'Easy IOTN' app was identified. It has a mean MARS score of 3.6. Significant inaccuracies were found within the CPD component of the 'Easy IOTN' app.Discussion A mean MARS score of 3.6 is deemed average and is comparable to the quality of other orthodontic apps which exist. Errors contained within the CPD component could confuse users and have a negative impact on IOTN skill development.Conclusions The educational component of the 'Easy IOTN' app is of an acceptable standard, but the CPD section is flawed.

The prevalence of malocclusions in patients seeking orthodontic treatment at COMS from Chitwan District of Nepal

Background: Malocclusion is the abnormal relation between maxillary and mandibular teeth which leads to various problems like esthetics, phonation, mastication, psychological and social problems. The prevalence of malocclusion is highly variable and its range is very wide and heterogeneous. Aims and Objectives: To assess the prevalence of various malocclusion traits and to evaluate the orthodontic treatment need based on the Dental Health Component (DHC) of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) among the patients visiting the College of Medical Sciences (COMS), Bharatpur, Chitwan. Materials and Method: A total of 530 patients visiting dental OPD, College of Medical Sciences, Bharatpur, Chitwan were included in this study among which 288 were male and 242 were female patients. Out of the total 530 subjects, malocclusion was observed in 359 individuals. Therefore, all subsequent results and fidings reported in the study are based on these 359 subjects exclusively. Intraoral examination was carried out to assess malocclusion based on Angle’s classifiation, overjet, overbite, open bite, crowding, spacing, and crossbite. The statistical test employed in the study was the Chi-Square test, which was utilized to assess the presence of a signifiant difference. Result: The present study showed that Class I (55.2%), malocclusion was most prevalent followed by Class II (40.9%) and then Class III (3.9%). Increased overjet (41.2%), deep overbite (40.7%), anterior crowding (70.8%), midline spacing (17.5%), and anterior crossbite (16.4%) were more prevalent occlusal traits. DHC (Dental Health Component) of IOTN (Index of Orthodontic Treatment Needs) showed more in grades 1 and 2 (61.88%) followed by grades 4 and 5 (26.03%). Conclusion: Class I crowding was the most prevalent malocclusion in adolescents in Bharatpur, Chitwan. The majority of patients fall in grade 1 and 2 categories followed by grades 4 and 5 of DHC of IOTN grading.

Comparative cross-sectional study of socio-psychological orthodontic needs and oral habits in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

This cross-sectional study analyzed the socio-psychological need for orthodontic treatment in children and adolescents with and without Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and its association with deleterious oral habits. Children/adolescents aged 6-14 years old, with and without ASD, and their respective caregivers were included. Caregivers completed a questionnaire addressing children and adolescents' deleterious oral habits. To assess the socio-psychological need for orthodontic treatment, we utilized the aesthetic component of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Needs (IOTN). Caregivers and an orthodontist independently used the standardized IOTN aesthetic attractiveness scale containing ten intraoral photographs and compared them with the most similar condition of the child/adolescent. Data collection occurred at two universities in northeastern Brazil and at an ASD referral center. Statistical analyses encompassed descriptive statistics, Shapiro-Wilk, Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney, and Chi-squared tests with linear trend (α5%). The study involved 144 participants, evenly divided into two groups (ASD and non-ASN). The ASD group showed higher average IOTN-AC scores as evaluated by both professionals (mean score=4.78 [±2.34], p=.182) and caregivers (mean score=4.31[±2.71], p=.992). Caregivers reported notably elevated IOTN-AC scores in cases where onychophagy was absent (p=.049). Patients with ASD are indicated as having a relatively higher socio-psychological need for orthodontic treatment.

Perceptions of the dental attractiveness and orthodontic treatment needs among the school-going population of the rural areas of Lucknow

Application of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) to assess and grade the perceptions of dental attractiveness and orthodontic treatment need among the school-going population of the rural areas of Lucknow, formulate a questionnaire to record the response of the study population and comparison by the statistical appraisal, the grading of aesthetics and treatment need as recorded by the orthodontist and as implied by the study subjects. A multistage cluster sample of 650 school students aged 12-18 years was selected. A proforma containing personal data such as name, gender, age, DHC grading, AC grading (by both examiner and subject), and a brief questionnaire was created to record the results per person. The Dental health component (DHC) and the aesthetic component (AC), both were recorded for IOTN-based treatment needs assessment. According to the DHC, 30% of people had a clear need for therapy, 54.62% had a marginal or mild need, and 15.38% had no need at all. As per the AC, 52.9% of respondents had no or a mild need for therapy, 22.3% had a questionable need, and 24.8% had a clear need for intervention. Furthermore, 43.5% of the subjects had no idea at all about Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics, while 31.4% identified the branch with the word braces which is a concerning fact.A statistically significant association between the DHC and the subject’s willingness to undergo locally provided and economically feasible Orthodontic treatment indicates a large base of potential orthodontic patients who are unable to seek treatment due to a lack of access to better healthcare facilities. The outcomes of the current study can, however, be used to plan for public health and to provide ideas for more research.

Association between severity of malocclusion and parameters of oral functions in permanent dentition with various malocclusion: case-control study

ABSTRACT Purpose It has been reported that people with malocclusion have poor masticatory function, including decreased bite force and masticatory efficiency, but the relationship between the severity of malocclusion and oral function remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between the severity of malocclusion and various oral function parameters using the Dental Health Component (DHC) of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN), which quantitatively evaluates the state of malocclusion. Materials and methods A total of 138 permanent dentition patients (39-men, 99-women; aged 15–59 years) who visited Tsurumi University Dental Hospital were included in the study. The severity of malocclusion was determined using IOTN-DHC grading, and patients were classified into three groups. All patients underwent oral function tests before orthodontic treatment, including masticatory efficiency, occlusal force, occlusal contact area, lip pressure and tongue pressure. The relationship between malocclusion severity and oral function was statistically analysed. Results Firstly, we compared the medians of each oral function values among three groups and found statistically significant lower value in group 3, the worst IOTN-DHC grading group, as compared to group 1. Correlation analysis revealed correlations between malocclusion severity and oral functions, such as lip pressure, masticatory efficiency and tongue pressure. In addition, masticatory efficiency was correlated with occlusal contact area, tongue pressure and lip pressure. Conclusions Our results suggest that oral function is lower in patients with severe malocclusion and masticatory efficiency is related not only to dental occlusion but also to the function of surrounding soft tissues, such as the tongue and lips.

Assessment of Relationship between Intelligence Quotient and Orthodontic Treatment Need.

Low cognitive ability may reduce the ability to understand the importance of oral health and to perform the necessary practices to maintain proper oral hygiene. Early loss of primary teeth following high caries risk may lead to malocclusion of permanent dentition. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between the cognitive levels of adolescents and their orthodontic treatment needs. Between January 2018 and May 2018, 200 adolescents aged 10 - 15 who applied to the Pediatric Dentistry Clinic of Marmara University and sought orthodontic treatment were invited to participate in the study. The orthodontic treatment needs of 150 adolescents who agreed to participate were evaluated with the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need - Aesthetic Component and their cognitive levels were evaluated with the Raven Standard Progressive Matrices (SPM) Test. P-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. The mean age (± standard deviation) of 126 adolescents (77 females and 49 males) who completed the SPM test was 11.8 (± 1.3). There was no consistency between the intellectual level and the need for orthodontic treatment (Kappa value = 0.071, p-value = 0.081). There was no correlation between malocclusion severity and intelligence quotient scores of adolescents (ρ [rho] = -0.089, p = 0.322). According to Multiple logistic regression results, there was no difference between 'borderline need' (p = 0.059) and 'great need' (p = 0.881) from 'no need' for orthodontic treatment in adolescents with different intelligence quotients. The results showed no evidence for an association between malocclusion and intelligence quotient.

The effect of text message reminders on compliance with Twin Block appliances: A randomised controlled trial.

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether text reminders influence patient compliance with Twin Block appliances. The null hypothesis was that there was no statistically significant differences in Twin Block compliance between those who receive text reminders and those that do not. Single-blind parallel randomised controlled clinical trial. Health Service Executive (HSE) orthodontic outpatient clinic in Dublin, Ireland. A total of 59 patients aged 11-15 years with a 5a Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN grade) starting treatment with Twin Block appliances. A computer-generated unstratified allocation sequence was used to randomise the participants into the control group (CG) or the text group (TG). Both groups were asked to wear their appliances full-time. In addition to the same verbal and written instruction received by the CG, the TG received text message reminders to wear their appliances every 3 days. The primary outcome measure was wear time reported by Theramon® sensors embedded in the appliances. Data on wear time were uploaded from the Theramon® sensors onto cloud software. Participants in both groups were asked to fill out wear diaries and submit these at each visit. Treating clinicians and the primary investigator were blinded to the allocation group. Participants were followed up for 4 months. Participants were not blinded to their treatment group. In total, 29 participants were allocated to the CG and 30 to the TG. The data for 53 participants were analysed, 24 from the CG and 29 from the TG. The median hours/day of wear recorded using the Theramon® sensors was 13.77 (interquartile range [IQR] = 10.19) for the CG and 17.72 (IQR = 5.62) for the TG. The difference in wear time recorded was not statistically significant (P = 0.16). The study concluded that text message reminders had no statistically significant influence on patient compliance with Twin Block appliances.

Hubungan tingkat kebutuhan perawatan ortodonti menggunakan index of orthodontic treatment need (iotn) dengan dental aesthetic index (dai)

Background: Malocclusion occurs due to a change in dimensions from primary teeth to permanent teeth. The most common malocclusion in children aged 9-11 years is caused by the eruption of the canines and second premolars, requiring orthodontic treatment. To be able to determine the level of need for orthodontic treatment, an orthodontic index is needed, one of which is the Index Of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) and the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI). The orthodontic clinic at RSGM-P FKG Trisakti University is a clinic that performs interceptive orthodontic treatment in the mixed dentition period. The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between the level of need for orthodontic treatment using the Index Of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) and the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI) on patients aged 9-11 years at the orthodontic clinic of the RSGM-P FKG Trisakti University. Methods: The research method used was an analytic observational study with a cross-sectional study design. Results: The results of the research based on the results of the Spearman's rho correlation test, obtained a significance value of 0.905 (sig &lt;0.05), the strength of the relationship of 0.023 means that the correlation is very weak between variables. Conclusion: So that it can be concluded that there is no significant relationship between the need for orthodontic treatment based on IOTN and DAI in patients aged 9-11 years at RSGM-P FKG Trisakti University.

Comparative assessment of orthodontic and aesthetic outcomes after orthognathic surgery with clear aligner or fixed appliance therapy.

Clear aligner therapy has an aesthetic advantage over fixed appliance therapy. However, to our knowledge, no study has objectively compared patient orthodontic and aesthetic outcomes between clear aligner and fixed appliance therapies administered after orthognathic surgery (OGS). This study included patients with no history of congenital craniofacial deformities who underwent surgery-first OGS and received clear aligner or fixed appliance therapy. The patients' grades on the Dental Health Component (DHC) and Aesthetic Component (AC) of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need and scores on the Peer Assessment Rating (PAR) index were calculated before OGS (T0), after OGS (T1), and after orthodontic therapy (T2). This study included 33 patients (clear aligner therapy, 19; fixed appliance therapy, 14). No considerable between-group differences were noted in the DHC and AC grades at T0, T1, or T2. Furthermore, %reduction in the PAR index score was more significant in the clear aligner group (74.4%) than in the fixed appliance group (63.2%) from T0 to T1 (p = .035); however, no between-group differences were noted from T1 to T2 or from T0 to T2. Both groups exhibited substantially improved DHC grades, AC grades, and PAR index scores at T1 and T2. Patient outcomes were similar between the clear aligner and fixed appliance groups after orthodontic therapy. However, the former group exhibited more favorable immediate results after OGS than did the latter group. Thus, as an adjunct therapy for patients with malocclusion, clear aligner therapy may be more effective than fixed appliance therapy.
